carpintotl and deforemperor
based on the imperial woodpecker, a very likely extinct species of woodpecker endemic to Mexico, there have been some sightings in the last years but all seem to be misidentifications. It was the largest woodpecker species reaching a 60 cm wingspan, it likely went extinct due to the heavy deforestation of its home. so carpintotl is an apparition and deforemperor is a bird carved on burning wood.

Day 12 of January extinct birds - the imperial woodpecker
These are officially classified as CR - possibly extinct... but the hope of them still surviving is pitifully low as almost all viable habitat has been destroyed. These woodpeckers, endemic to Mexico, were enormous, around 60cm in length. They were often seen in small groups that search together for large dead trees to extract bugs from. Because of their size, they needed large amounts of habitat and were also targeted by loggers for fear of them ruining timber.

peony
Tumblr media
Well, November is upon us and the year is drawing to a close. Or another beginning depending on how you look at it. In the Northern Hemisphere the leaves are busy changing colors, the birds are halfway to their winter homes, the last butterfly cocoon is tucked in and hidden for the coming cold and November children are busy trying to fend off Christmas decorations long enough to celebrate their birthdays.
Let's talk about flowers to help with that.
November has two official flowers. The chrysanthemum and the peony. Happenstance I re-imagined a peony ghost story for Halloween so we're going to talk about that flower for this post.
The peony can either be a tree blossom or a more tradition herbaceous flower. Native to Asia, Europe and North America, most of the time when we think of peony flowers, we're thinking of the ones that were cultivated and rose to fame in China. From 618 to 907, the Tang dynasty was in power in China and while the previous Sui dynasty had seen a growing fascination with the peony, it was the Tang dynasty that solidified it as a symbol of China, filling the imperial gardens with them. The Song dynasty that followed saw the city of Luoyang becoming both the capitol of the dynasty and of peony cultivation, a distinction that the city still, peony at least, holds to this day. The Quing dynasty saw the city of He Ze, or Cáozhōu, becoming a second center for peony flowers. Cáozhōu is also still a center for peony exhibitions and state-funded research. The peony was the official flower of China until 1929. To this day it is still known as 'the King of the Flowers'.
The peony's fame didn't stay in China however. Japan saw the introduction of the flower sometime before the tenth century and fell in love with it as well, working the peony into their stories and folklore. In the nineteenth century, Europe went wild for the flower, especially in France and the United Kingdom where cultivators began experimenting with various strains, and the Netherlands became the largest exporter, a distinction they hold to this day with over 50 million stems sold each year. In a fun twist, Alaska is starting to show up as an exporter as well, with its long sunny days during the summer turning out to be prime for the flowers' growth.
The peony isn't just a pretty face either. Before it was celebrated for its beauty it was known as a medicinal plant. In China and Japan, the peony root was used to treat convulsions. To this day, people still use its petals in teas and salads. In England, children wore necklaces made of the root to help with teething and prevent seizures. The peony even, very early on, spread as far as regions of the Mediterranean were we got the standard english version of its name from Greek myths. In one, Apollo, to no one's surprise, is pursuing a nymph named Paeonia, who grew embarrassed when she realized Aphrodite was being a voyeur about it and, for that sin, Aphrodite turned her into a flower. In the other myth, there's a physician named Paeon, who used the root of the peony flower to cure Pluto. Paeon's mentor, the god of medicine Aesculapius, grew jealous of this feat and attempted to kill his student. Again a god fell back on the flower solution and Pluto (or Zeus in some versions) turned Paeon into a peony flower so everyone would praise him for being beautiful. Because - priorities.
As for superstitions about the peony - its considered dangerous to pick its seeds while a woodpecker is about. If it sees you, it will peck out your eyes! A peony bush full of flowers is good luck but once they start to wilt and fall off you should prepare for bad luck (given its natural for flowers to do this, gardeners apparently need to get picking). It's also bad luck to give or receive an odd number of peony flowers in a bouquet or to have an odd number bloom on your bush. Fairies are rumored to hide in a peony flower's petals. Thanks to Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a Japanese master ukiyo-e artist from the 1800s, who drew warriors with peony tattoos, the flower can symbolize, especially in tattoos, a masculine devil-may-care and 'damn the consequences' attitude. The red peony in Serbia is said to spring from the blood of the Serbian warriors who died in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. It is the state flower of Indiana in the United States.
In the language of flowers, the peony can represent shame or bashfulness. The flower also symbolizes romance, wealth, honor, bravery, compassion and a happy relationship or happy marriage. It is also the flower given on the twelfth wedding anniversary.

pikipek propaganda!!! pikipek is based off the real world genera Campephilus and Dryocopus, which includes multiple species of very large woodpeckers!
pikipek visually appears to be most directly inspired by the pileated, lineated, and black-bodied woodpeckers in Dryocopus, as well as the crimson-crested, imperial, and ivory-billed woodpecker in Campephilus! however, none of these species are found in hawaiʻi (gen 7’s inspiration) as hawaiʻi actually doesn’t have any true native woodpeckers!
Tumblr media
pileated woodpecker (d. pileatus)
the imperial and ivory-billed woodpeckers, however, are due to be officially considered extinct soon by the IUCN. the ivory-billed is particularly hotly debated its nickname is the “lord god bird” because when you saw it you’d say “lord god what a bird!!”
Tumblr media
here's a pic of one on the head of james tanner in 1938. he published an article in 1942 on how the logging industry would destroy the last habitat of this bird, and 1944 was the last time the bird was proven to be seen alive :(
pikipek always reminds me of these amazing birds, what we've lost and what we still have the ability to save! i actually saw a pileated irl a few months ago for the first time. i was mesmerized by them for probably an hour just watching them. truly amazing birds!!
vote for pikipek here!

ok last post for the day but did you know that literally unpacking your repression will cure you?
i've been unpacking the word and the concept of "repression" for the past 11 months and it has taken me on a journey that has just. literally repaired holes in my brain
and i didn't even know i was repressed. i thought i was "normal" and knew about all the edges and sides of myself
but it turns out that there was more to discover. and i have resolved to never be so set in stone again, so sure of what i know and don't know, how i identify, how i operate, how i navigate
your body and life and mind are all very malleable, expandable; you can be so much stronger, so much more confident, than you are now. even if you think you're already strong and confident
you don't know what you don't know...
--
the biggest reoccuring issue that i see on the internet is people posting with such authority, being so sure that they're right, even when they're speaking from a very narrow point of view, and have had a sheltered, judgmental upbringing. so they're just projecting their very limited experience on everything else. i know because i used to be guilty of that too.
but now i'm so... like, i am so fulfilled, so happy, and in a constant state of open curiosity, closer to zen than i have ever been before.
and i had to get there through being dragged through gravel at the bottom of a pit; i had nightmares about demons coming through screens, false reality, eyes following me everywhere. this is a really personal note here. you might not resonate with this. but i think that "madness" or nightmares can sometimes be a signpost of something else that's bothering you. i know that i was flagging to myself that the internet and television and etc, while it is very entertaining, it's also literally false reality, like, you could waste your whole life caring about tweets and hot takes and shit. i could just work on my little computer then watch tv and sleep and that would be my whole life. but it was all a coping mechanism for an unfulfilled life.
so then -- what is it that would make for a fulfilled life? even if it feels scary, out of reach, impossible; even if it feels shameful (not from a real sense, i.e. harming someone else, but from an imaginary sense, like "i don't know why, but when i think about this thing that doesn't hurt anyone, i feel sick, like i shouldn't do it, but i want to do it, i feel like i have to do it"--)--
i think there is soooo much repression out there, because we're just steeped in it. and there's the repression that you know about, then a whole shadowy area of your mind that's the repression you're not even conscious of. and maybe sometimes things lash out from those shadows; you project things onto other people, carry grudges, can't feel satisfied with anything, etc
i've dealt with a lot of depression and anxiety and intrusive thoughts and so on, and a lot of it just.......... stopped. over the past year. from unpacking the repression
(i also feel personally that a lot of people who subscribe to conservative ideologies are repressed on some level. and in my mental mind map, there's "repression" < - > "trauma" < - > "isolation" with lines pencilled in heavily between each of them)
and it's like... you open yourself up to yourself, you open up to other people more, you become more engaged in your community, build better friendships, etc.
because it's like repression is poison in the soil... and the more we get rid of that shit the more we can grow, open up, more things grow..
it's just one word, it can mean different things to different people, but i think we could all attack it with the same woodpecker-like ferocity that i am attacking my own repression. you know? then it would be like. oh shit. i had a tool of imperialism and colonialism and white supremacy and heteropatriarchy and protestant / catholic control just festering inside of me for years. damn. good thing i got it out!

Birds of Estolad
Written for @melestasflight
Flora, fauna, geography and environment Masterlist
Other bird posts: Himlad, The March
Other information in the Estolad tag including my environment posts
I love doing general flora and fauna posts but I can’t fit everything in them so I’m trying to make more specific ones as well! please please feel free to send categories to work on with locations! Or any environmental world building asks!
Estolad is a region in Northeastern Beleriand. It was a wide plain located between the river Aros on the west and the river Gelion on the east. It was south of the March of Maedhros and north of the Andram.
We have little canonical information about the environment or ecology of Estolad. For this post, I have primarily used the environmental information for other locations in Eastern Beleriand (though it should be noted that the climate of Ossiriand does differ greatly from the areas between the March and Maglor’s Gap and the Andram). I have also used geographic information and the environmental world building I’ve previously done
Tolkien primarily used plains, prairies and grasslands of North America and parts of Europe and Asia
Like my other similar posts, I’ve included world building notes at the end so it’s not just a list of species! A lot of aspects and species are similar to Himlad but I didn’t repeat all of the same because I didn’t want to get too repetitive! Because of this, I don’t have quite as many birds and some of my notes are a little more frivolous which I apologize for
On the plain: common quail, corn bunting, common buzzard, steppe eagle, hazel grouse, grey partridge, pallid harrier, steppe eagle, black grouse, great grey strike, crested lark, golden eagle (rare), common cuckoo (migratory), lesser kestrel, great bustard, pale backed pigeon, imperial eagle, white throated bushchat
Water birds (on the river banks, in wetlands closer to the Andram and Ossiriand, and in small lakes and ponds): white stork (migratory), common crane, mallard duck, white tailed eagle, water rail, glossy ibis, common loon, gadwell
In trees around the rivers and by the Andram: long eared owls, common bullfinch, grey wagtail, mountain accentor (in the north and south of the region), common hoopoe (migratory), little owl, grey headed woodpecker, common raven, merlin, common golden oriole, common nightjar
World building notes:
-The Noldorin host of Estolad rely on birds for food (meat and eggs), feathers (for down, quills, etc) and companionship/aid
--Among the Noldor in Estolad, birds of prey are used for hunting. The species most commonly used are the pallid harrier and the steppe eagle
-The small population of green elves in Estolad do not eat birds however they do eat eggs of some species including ones they’ve domesticated. They also use feathers in and on clothing and with down.
-Birds are common in the folklore, language and art of both elven peoples of Estolad. Though most of the established Noldorin lore originated before their settling there, some tales and phrases and art do develop among their host. Some of these develop in connection to the lore and traditions of the green elves there
One such tradition are styles of paintings of birds, similar to the bird and flower or Huaniaohua in the real world. These developed in part inspired by spoken poetry and song by the green elves, particularly those related to their spring gatherings.
-The green elves of Estolad likewise have an abundance of lore and beliefs about the animals around them including many about birds and symbolic meaning given to species. White storks for example are symbolic of approaching death, winter or other natural changes of a somber nature. Common golden orioles are signifiers of late summer and early autumn. They are associated with the increased pressure to forage and store food for the winter and their image often appears on the cloth bags that hold certain items
-There is a tiny lake near where the initial settlements by Amrod and Amras’s host was. During the first spring, baby cranes were seen on the water. Some of the advisers and higher ups became very fond of the little family.
-Estolad was also inhabited by humans. Several cultures lived there for a time after coming west from over the Ered Luin. Just like other aspects of the environment and life of Estolad, the birds of Estolad entered the lore and knowledge of the Edain hosts, combining and joining with the lore and knowledge from their old homes beyond the Ered Luin.
Note: I want to go more in to their relationship of the humans here with the environment, including with birds on another post so I can do that in more depth

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH <- me thinking about larp now i've been back to empire
Hots:
it was so so so so so so so so good being back on the field, I feel so energised and excited about empire again and people were so lovely, it was absolutely brilliant to see people again and had some very fun and very lovely chats with folks
dunking on not one but TWO spiremates and their new entanglements. congratulations on not getting stabbed, both of you!
massively huge love to everyone at crystal skies, it feels so good to be back and see people both old and new (or very old, in the case of Jordan's new character!)
also love to the imperial orcs who were so lovely even when I was hiding in your shady camp throughout the event. 9/10, what was up with that woodpecker?
getting involved in a project and the amount of excitement I have regarding it has my brain lighting up on fire. I love research so much………………….
night of worth was amazing, I cannot emphasise it enough. all the stories of worth were brilliant, showcasing the wide span of experiences across the orcs and then ending in that challenge! fucking epic.
getting to hold a heretical item for all of ten seconds and then immediately wanting to give it back once I started thinking of the "chains, no more" chant
finding out Stuff And Things which led me to lying awake in my tent that night and slowly feeling the dots connect in my head as disparate pieces of information finally received the missing context to make sense. some of it is STILL unknown to me but that just means I get to meddle more :3
also yippee, Spiral is an imperial territory again! very excited to see what comes of the spiral orcs (please can we call them sporcs)
Nots:
Spiral is an imperial territory again… but not as expected. I think it's such a wild situation that everyone in Urizen has many thoughts and feelings on, tempered by the logic we love to employ. mostly.
I don't need to say anything about the heat. You know.
empire is definitely a physical strain on me now but I think it's one that I can tolerate (or at least build a tolerance for) again. today is going to be as sedentary as possible because I don't think there's a single part of me that isn't bruised and/or hurting. on the plus side, I got away with only a single blister on my foot!

Eggman Enterprises
Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik
Tumblr media
Dr. Eggman is, in his own words, the greatest scientific genius in the world, though that has come into question in recent years-- after all, with all the aliens the world has come to know, perhaps it's more accurate to say he's the greatest genius in the universe! But, like any good scientist, he uses his mind for good. What's more virtuous a goal than a perfect, worldwide theme park wherein everything is under his own control? No lines, no hunger, no fear, no individual thought-- it would be a paradise! (Also available in Classic flavor!)
Metal Sonic
Tumblr media
Metal Sonic is Dr. Eggman's right-hand 'bot, and the stoic enforcer of the Eggman Empire. Don't let his silence fool you, however, because underneath his metal shell is an introspective and determined robot, who constantly strives to improve himself. Sometimes that drive gets him in trouble with his creator-- there was that one time he tried to rule the world on his own-- but any rebellious intentions have long since been scrubbed from his programming, and now he is a perfect, cold, calculating, nigh-unstoppable menace to all he encounters. (Also available in Classic flavor!)
Sage
Tumblr media
Sage is among the bad doctor's greatest creations, and is his dearest (and only) daughter. Though she was originally programmed as a mere invasive AI, she has developed into a very personable young girl. Dedicated to the protection of her father and the propogation of the Eggman Empire, she has been integrated into the EggNet, and commands the digital side of Eggman's evil escapades. This doesn't mean she's nonpresent, however, as she can project a hard-light hologram in the physical world nearly anywhere that has a connection point to the EggNet.
Orbot & Cubot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The mechanical Abbot and Costello of the Eggman Empire, these two serve as Dr. Eggman's bumbling personal assistants. Orbot tends to play straightman to Cubot's bumbling fool, but let it be known, neither are particularly competent. Not that they seek to impress in that regard anyway-- unless Metal or Sage are involved. They desperately wish to make good impressions on their "siblings", which tends to get them into even more trouble than when they don't try at all.
Team Hooligans
Fang the Hunter
Tumblr media
The brains behind Team Hooligans, Fang is cutthroat bounty hunter living in the Mirage Saloon Zone, not that he ever stays in one place for long. His jobs tend to take him all over the world, especially when he does work for the diabolical Dr. Eggman. Indeed, Fang will take most any job if it pays high enough. The man'd even sell out his own mother for a pretty ring.
Bark the Polar Bear
Tumblr media
Bark is the brawn and the heart of Team Hooligans. He is a calming presence around his two fellow criminals, and though he is one of the most wanted men in the world thanks to his association with Bean, those who get to know him tend to feel he isn't that bad a guy, he's just fallen in with a bad crowd. Whether they're the right crowd for him or not, however, he is fiercely loyal to his team, and will fight to the last to keep them safe.
Bean the Dynamite
Tumblr media
Some say he's a duck, others say he's a woodpecker. What does the man himself say? He's Bean! Beanaldo Remington Beaksworth IV, to be exact! Yes, Bean isn't a particularly stable person. In fact, some would go so far as to call him insane. Which makes him very dangerous when he uses his trademark bombs. It's unknown exactly how he creates those high explosives as if from nothing, but then, much of Bean's existence defies explanation. All anyone knows is that he's the Hooligans' wildcard, and he's better left avoided at all cost.
Battle Kukku Empire
Great Battle Kukku XV
Tumblr media
Don't let the name of his army, or his swaggering steps fool you-- the Great Battle Kukku is more of a pirate captain than an imperial ruler. His crew? The Grand Battle Kukku Armada. He is the self-proclaimed ruler of the skies, and will raid any town, facility, or ruins to sustain that rule. He also has the ability to create bombs at his leisure, much like a certain Dynamite Duck...
Battle Kukku XVI / "Speedy"
Tumblr media
Speedy is the second in command of the Battle Kukku Empire, and the son of the Great Battle Kukku. He prides himself on his fast flying, boosted even further when he wears a special flight suit developed by Kukku chief science officer Dr. Fukurokov. He believes the skies belong only to the birds-- even bats and bugs are lesser in his eyes. But the one being he truly hates is one Miles "Tails" Prower-- no wingless mammal is welcome in Speedy's skies!
Dr. Fukurokov
Tumblr media
Dr. Fukurokov is the greatest mind the clouds have ever seen. It's arguable whether he rivals Dr. Eggman in intelligence, but he frankly doesn't give a hoot if he does or not. Eggman may have more powerful tech, but none can match the developmental potential of Fukurokov's machines! Ultimately, Dr. Fukurokov is a curious and inquisitive creature by nature. He is always ready to study, and always willing to adapt. Just...make sure you don't pronounce his name wrong.
Witchcarters
Witchcart
Tumblr media
A crystalmancer with a sharp tongue and an even sharper hat, Witchcart may limit herself with the rails she sets up, but don't underestimate her! With her magic wand, she can turn anyone who would dare oppose her into crystal! Still, she's somewhat of a lesser villain compared to Dr. Robotnik, content to pull low-level jobs like kidnapping Flickies or taking over a single small island. She's less "horrible evil" and more "mischief-maker".
Hocke-Wulf
Tumblr media
Hocke-Wulf is something of the brains behind the Witchcarters' operations-- ironic, considering he seems to have lost his own mind somewhere along the way. This laughing fool is surprisingly tech-savvy, and is in-fact responsible for making all the tech that the Witchcarters don't just steal from Eggman, and refitting all the tech that they do!
Bearanger
Tumblr media
What Bearanger lacks in temper control, he makes up for in strength. Far from the brightest bear on the block, and kind of just frustrated all the time, Bearanger is the clear muscle of the group. He's the one with the strongest grudge against Tails, save Witchcart herself, and that is not unique. Bearanger has a lot of grudges, even among his own teammates. He will never forgive Carrottia for eating his clearly-marked smoked salmon sandwich.
Carrottia
Tumblr media
Carrottia is the...heart? Of the Witchcarters' team? No, that can't be right... perhaps she's the working hands? Oh, definitely not. In fact, it's unclear what exactly she contributes to the group, if anything at all. She's far more content to lazily float about in her Carrot Cruiser and half-heartedly carry out the orders she's given. She's quite lackadaisical, and spends much of her time asleep, even when she really shouldn't.
Other
Surge the Tenrec
Tumblr media
Suffering from psychosis, amnesia, various traumas, and a bad case of the old identity crisis, Surge is a cyborg created by the vile Dr. Starline to not just kill, but replace Sonic the Hedgehog. Ever since the dear doctor's death at the hands of Dr. Eggman and a particularly vengeful boulder, Surge and her companion have struck out on their own. Driven mad by hypnosis and months of psychological abuse, her only goal now is to burn the entire world down, sift through the ashes for the bodies of the ones she loathes the most, and hang them up on the wall as trophies for her grandest accomplishment.
Kitsunami the Fennec
Tumblr media
Kit is the Tails to Surge's Sonic. To that end, he is endlessly devoted to her, even at the cost of his own personal safety and wellness. He will do anything she says with a polite "yes ma'am!", and without her has a tendency to shut down and shut the world out. Don't let his appearance and demeanor fool you, though. He is a living weapon just like his partner, and his control over ice and water makes him a very dangerous foe on the rare occasions he lets loose. He is prone to outbursts of hellish fury when he believes Surge to be hurt or worse, and would tear down the world itself to protect her.
Mr. Tinker
Tumblr media
An alternate version of everyone's least favorite doctor, Mr. Tinker is everything Dr. Eggman is not. Kind, caring, humble, and beloved by his community. Though a mad scientist by the name of Dr. Starline tried to revert him to his old, evil self, somehow Tinker managed to survive the torture and conditioning and was rescued by Sonic and friends. Now, he seeks only a humble life helping to fix the gizmos and gadgets of those around him, with no sign of the Eggman ever returning. He has been having these awful nightmares of late, though...

[ A herd of banteng photographed in Alas Purwo National Park, Indonesia by Buyung Sukananda. ]
“In 2006, a controversial paper claiming to look at genetic evidence concluded that the hybrid explanation was correct. For many naturalists, it was a logical conclusion. Many sources, such as Jose R. Castello’s Bovids of the World, note that kouprey were often observed in mixed herds with banteng and feral water buffalo. If you have a bunch of similar species mixing it up, you might expect hybrids.
And as stated previously, there is considerable variation in the horn sizes and shapes of cattle. So the idea that wild banteng and feral cattle bred (which happens), and resulted in the kouprey, made sense. It gathered a lot of media attention. Perhaps it absolved humanity of a little guilt. We didn’t eliminate the kouprey; it was basically just a cow after all.
A year later, another team of researchers did a much more thorough genetic analysis, including a kouprey skull found that dated before cattle domestication. This resulted in a peer-reviewed paper that demonstrated, definitively, that the kouprey was a real and naturally occurring animal.
But are any left? As the X-Files slogan goes: “I want to believe.” I do. I’d love to imagine this tall wild ox with frayed horns still out in some remote corner of the forest. But like the thylacine and the imperial woodpecker, I’m forced to accept these creatures now roam only through dreams.”
- Excerpt from “Kouprey: The Ultimate Mystery Mammal” by Matthew L. Miller.

Can I suggest the ivorybilled woodpecker aka the Lord God Bird?
I was deciding between ivory-billed woodpecker and the imperial woodpecker, since they're so similar in appearance! I might come around and draw the ivory-billed too sometime in the future (but also my to-draw list is so so long and ever expanding haha) Thank you for the ask tho!
