Something about Impostor palls

So I made this couple months ago, it’s about white and stick with a who adopted an impostor, an impostor who eats impostors, and another impostor who’s basically in minceraft survival. 

I had the thought of dipin out on this for a while but since I like drawing them time to time so I just still draw them but forgot to post it. But I guess I’ll be bringing it back now. I would also make their back stories and random comics bout them.

Thoughts on the Shadow's Doppelganger, Lamont Cranston

The funny thing about Cranston in the original stories is that, yeah, one of the most famous scenes across all Shadow media is the “Lamont Cranston Talks to Himself” chapter in The Shadow Laughs, where we learn that The Shadow is not Lamont Cranston, but has usurped his identity, and now shows up at his bedside looking like him, talking like him, knowing more about his own life than he himself does, and ordering him to leave town, effectively blackmailing him into letting him use his face. It’s a very iconic scene that exemplifies a lot of what makes The Shadow unique as a character, and you can imagine why so many adaptations have gone with the idea of Cranston being either a hapless stooge bullied into submission, or an actual villain, because that whole scene is very much a horror movie scenario. 

Thing is, none of them seem to remember how Cranston and The Shadow’s relationship developed past this. I’ll post this excerpt from Atoms of Death:

"Good morning, Cranston," came a quiet tone from the foot of the bed.

"Good morning, yourself," returned Cranston, rubbing his eyes without noticing the visitor.

"You should say: Good morning, myself," chuckled The Shadow, dryly.

Cranston was pulling down the sleeves of his pajama jacket. He sat bolt upright, staring. Then a slow smile showed on his lips; one that was almost a replica of The Shadow's.

"So it's you," remarked Cranston, sleepily. "Well, I knew that last night. It was about time we crossed paths again. Well, old man, you landed me in for plenty this trip."

Cranston shoved bedclothes aside and perched on the edge of the bed. He found cigarettes on the telephone table; The Shadow supplied a flame from a lighter before Cranston could ignite a match. The millionaire noted that The Shadow's lighter bore the initials "L. C." 

"You handle every detail, don't you?" questioned Cranston in admiration. “Jove! I remember the first time I met you. In this very room. You dropped cloak and hat and left me looking at my own face as plainly as if I had seen it in a mirror. Just as it is today."

"And I advised you," recalled The Shadow, in Cranston's own tone, "to take a trip abroad, while I used your identity. You were a bit exasperated at first."

"I must admit that I was. I threatened to have you arrested, as an impostor, until you proved that you knew more about my affairs than I did. I really believe that if it had come to a showdown, I would have been proven the impostor and you the genuine Lamont Cranston. Jove!"

"Jove," repeated The Shadow, quietly, "You have acquired that expression recently, Cranston. I shall remember it for future reference. You have a penchant for acquiring anglicisms during your sojourns in British colonies. Jove!"

"Bounder and blighter," laughed Cranston. "Don't forget those. I still use them occasionally."

Or this excerpt from The Hydra, which is an incredible book where the chemistry between the two really shines:

Lamont Cranston woke up and wondered why his head still whirled. It took him about half a minute to learn that the motion came from the fact he was riding in his limousine. Someone must have put him back in the limousine and Stanley was driving him home. 

He didn't have to guess who had helped him on his way, for at that moment Cranston heard a low-toned laugh beside him. He turned to see the black-cloaked figure of The Shadow.

"What did you hit me with?" asked Cranston. "All four of your automatics?"

"I'm only carrying a pair tonight," replied The Shadow

Look at these two dorks, just palling around and getting into shenanigans and The Shadow outright joking around Cranston, like they are just two old chums having a laugh at the weirdness of their lives. The “real” Cranston didn’t show up very often in the original stories, especially in the last stories when Lamont Cranston essentially became the real identity of The Shadow, but when he did, part of what makes him stand out as his own character is that he’s funny. Gibson gets a lot of mileage out of Cranston as this guy who is completely nonchalant and chill about all the weird shit that happens to him, even in The Hydra after he kills a man with an elephant gun, he’s still more or less the same, he largely just walks out of it with a newfound realization. 

Relieving Cranston of the elephant gun, The Shadow steered his friend into the closet. Hauling the big weapon with him, The Shadow opened the door to meet and dismiss arriving servants who had dashed upstairs when they felt the house quake. 

"Whenever I see this gun," began Cranston, coming from the closet, "I'll remember what I did with it -" 

“Quite right," interposed The Shadow approvingly. "What you did to Mance will make amends for any elephants you may have killed. Too bad Mance didn't bring along a few more Hydra Heads.”

Slowly, understanding dawned on Cranston. He'd never compared his big-game hunts with The Shadow's quests for men of crime. He felt that The Shadow's cause was justified, but it had seemed outside the field of sport. It still was, but Cranston, now that he had dealt with a murderer who deserved to die, was realizing that his game hunts were more deserving of rebuke.

His encounters with The Shadow gradually changed Cranston from a useless millionaire wasting his resources and talents on idle pursuits, to...still largely a useless millionaire, except his resources and talents are no longer wasted and he’s gradually grown into a useful ally and friend to The Shadow. The Shadow tends to have that effect on people who work by his side and even Cranston, the guy whose main role in his organization is to just stay away and be useless somewhere else, can’t help but change a little into a better person when he appears. 

There’s an interesting article written by Bob Sampson called “The Third Shadow” which refers to the Bruce Elliot run of The Shadow Magazine, which is incredibly maligned by fans and not without reason, the stories all largely suck and the Shadow bears little resemblance to his former self, instead mostly feeling like a diet take on the radio show Lamont, more of an average detective. The theory Sampson puts out is that, during this period, it was actually Lamont Cranston who became active as The Shadow while Allard was busy overseas, and I definitely like this theory. It makes sense specially considering The Hydra sets up for Cranston to become more pro-active and serious:

While not the towering master-mind of Allard, he does become the next best thing: A post-war sleuth. He even indulges in wearing the cloak and slouch hat from time to time (to varying degrees of effectiveness), while trying to laugh like Allard (also to varying degrees of effectiveness) as if to fulfill that forbidden fantasy until he finally gets it out of his system. After all, The Shadow pretended to be him, why not the other way around?

As Bob Sampson put it: “It is always Cranston who explains all and takes the credit”. 

Probably very cathartic for Lamont, who for the last 18 years was relegated to being a distant supporting player in his own life. Cranston is still in contact with the agents however. He even receives "assignments" from Burbank. 

This entire arrangement could only be with The Shadow's tacit approval. Let us remember, Cranston was not merely some insipid fop. He certainly had done his own share of exploring and was indeed a hunter. He could handle a variety of firearms, was familiar with exotic peoples and their customs, knew how to stalk dangerous animals through the jungle and veldt, but he was not, nor ever claimed to be, a master secret-agent and soldier.

I think it is fitting that the writing is completely different for this period as well. Not the enigmatic journalistic style of Allards exploits, but the witty, modern champagne fizz of Cranston's odyssey in a Post-War world. He feels a full range of emotions. In the Gibson stories, The Shadow is at arms length. In the Elliott stories, Cranston is sitting right next to you on a train or an airplane or roadster. 

It’s also interesting to consider how Lamont Cranston has basically become the true name of The Shadow in pop culture. Often times it’s the name people use when they specifically want to reference The Shadow, the supposed “Ghost of Gay Street” hauntings in Gibson’s former apartment took the form of Lamont Cranston, and even in the stories, more and more people became aware of it as the years went by (which also helps reinforce the idea that the “real” Cranston eventually took to acting as a fill-in for The Shadow, to draw attention away from the real Shadow’s operations), and Gibson even mentioned a few times that Cranston was The Shadow’s “favorite” identity along with Arnaud. Which is kinda fascinating to think about and does hint at some weird underlying aspects of The Shadow’s psyche, that his favorite identity is one not his own.

And at last, there’s these passages from The Whispering Eyes, a book that does not mention Allard once, and the very last Shadow novel: 

From beneath the seat he was taking his black garb. Cloaked and hatted as he stepped from the cab, Cranston merged immediately with the darkness. He had become The Shadow. 

Cranston's switch to his other self could well be attributed to a hypnotic mood. The mental lapses produced through hypnosis were the sort that would often cause a subject to revert to habit. Now, as The Shadow, Cranston was still in what might be termed a haphazard mood. He was skirting through darkness, pausing, changing direction, behaving generally as though avoiding something that did not exist.

Lang had flung away his glasses; his eyes now showed the shining, hypnotic force that the lenses normally softened. He recognized the eyes that met his above a leveled gun muzzle.

The Shadow's eyes, yet strangely Cranston's, for this was one time The Shadow did not care to disguise them.

Which begs the question: Did Cranston succeed in fully becoming The Shadow? Or did The Shadow succeed in fully becoming Cranston?

Il presidente del Napoli, Aurelio De Laurentiis, ha preso parte, come ospite, al Passepartout Festival. Un’intervista a tutto tondo, dal cinema alla politica fino ad arrivare al calcio.

Che rapporto ha con gli altri industriali a Napoli e Roma?

«C’è un grande industriale napoletano che si chiama Aponte, ha Msc. È un uomo che spende un miliardo e mezzo a nave solo per crociere e altri per le navi da trasporto, per i container. Vive e opera a Ginevra. Come mai non a Napoli? Eppure a Napoli ha tutta la flotta dei collegamenti con le isole.

Io ho la scorta quando vado alla partita, ma quando sono a Napoli da solo mi rifiuto di avere la scorta, perché mi sento un uomo libero anche se qualcuno mi scrive ti uccidiamo, sei una merda perché magari l’ho fatto arrestare. Loro sanno che con me il compromesso non esisterà mai perché quando vado a dormire spengo la luce e non mi devo portare dietro i problemi, infatti mi addormento subito. Se muoio domani, non ho problemi di coscienza da portarmi dietro».

La Superlega

«Sono riuscito a smascherare Blatter quando stava alla Fifa, Platini quando era alla Uefa. Adesso non sono riuscito ancora a dedicarmi a fondo al ripianamento totale del calcio a livello mondiale. Dobbiamo stabilire un’altra competizione togliendola alla Uefa, tenendo la Uefa come segretariato generale, dando noi alla Uefa un x% sulle revenues e non facendoci pagare noi dalla Uefa. Io adesso ho 18 calciatori del Napoli in giro per campionati europei: se qualcuno si rompe e non mi torna sano per sei mesi, chi mi ripiana quei 100 o 50 milioni? La Uefa? No, e io perché ho dovuto prestare il mio calciatore? Per prendere degli spiccioli? Tu fatturi 3 miliardi e mezzo in 15 giorni?

«Di Draghi ho parlato a marzo dell’anno scorso, a Radio Capital. Mi aveva fatto i complimenti dopo la vittoria del ricorso contro la Juventus. Pur essendo juventini, quelli della radio mi chiesero che ne pensassi. Dissi che era un gentiluomo, un amico e quello che ci vorrebbe in Italia. Non bisogna solo avere i famosi 250 miliardi del Recovery, bisogna riuscire a indebitarsi per migliaia di miliardi, aprire cantieri, unificare un territorio che non è mai stato unificato.

La ricchezza dei Borboni a Napoli era gigantesca, loro si sono portati via tutte le riserve d’oro e l’unificazione non è avvenuta sul piano territoriale. Quando ho visto l’Italia giocare e i calciatori cantare tutti insieme l’inno, rispetto ai turchi, con passionalità, mi ha fatto piacere. Al Sud non si sono mai fatte opere su scuole, infrastrutture, manca tutto.

Se io fossi un politico comincerei a levare i sindaci dalle città, perché non sono capaci di gestire la res publica dal punto di vista imprenditoriale e manageriale. Se si danno 9mila euro lordi al mese a una persona, quella ruba o sta lì per fare la carriera politica a Roma. Non sono capaci. Si rende conto di cosa significa amministrare una città? O si è un genio o un impostore, e poiché sono contro gli impostori dico che per Napoli dovremmo prendere il miglior manager tedesco.

Infatti a Capodimonte abbiamo un bravissimo gestore francese, formidabile, straordinario. I cittadini che ne sanno di gestione di res publica? Finiscono per votare il colore politico per cui tengono, a parte i brogli che ci sono sempre stati. Ci vorrebbe una commissione di saggi di 20 persone che scelgono l’amministratore più giusto».

A De Laurentiis vengono fatti i complimenti per i calciatori del Napoli in Nazionale. Gli viene chiesto se la loro prestazione lo ha rincuorato rispetto alla stagione appena conclusa. Risponde:

«Sì, mi hanno rincuorato. Se continuano così, mi chiederanno l’aumento. Speriamo che pesino un po’ di meno sull’economia della Nazionale».

Come giudica De Luca? Con lui ha sempre avuto un buon rapporto.

«Con De Luca ho un buon rapporto perché andai a Salerno per motivi cinematografici quando ancora non mi interessavo di calcio. La trovai bellissima e ne volli conoscere il sindaco. Per quanto De Luca possa essere contestato da qualcuno, è una persona che ci mette la faccia e sta sul pezzo. Bisogna decidere: se siamo in ritardo di un secolo, se non decidiamo, quando recuperiamo?

La sua gestione è una gestione ingiudicabile, come è ingiudicabile tutto il territorio italiano, visto che da due anni c’è il Covid, che è come una terza guerra mondiale anche se meno cruenta. Mi angosciano i bambini e i giovani, le scuole e i professori non all’altezza, i professori sottopagati e pochi numericamente, gente che non ha girato il mondo e non sa cosa insegnare a questi ragazzini.

Mancano anche le strutture, i computer, inutile che ci fanno vedere i banchi comprati per le fregnacce, il problema è sostanziale: cosa gli insegniamo? Come facciamo a essere competitivi? Siamo al penultimo posto per consumo dei finanziamenti europei perché c’è una burocratizzazione del sistema con la possibilità di essere bloccati e denunciati e allora nessuno si muove».

Polito ha scritto che il modello del Napoli di De Laurentiis è migliore di quello della città. Che ne pensa?

«Sono arrivato a Napoli che la conoscevo poco, perché la mia famiglia era napoletana, ma non conoscevo la trasformazione dei napoletani, che si erano un po’ avviliti, intristiti, abbandonati. Qualcuno mi diceva di non farlo, decisi di fare di testa mia. Sono un visionario, ma non sono un pazzo.

Nella baia di Napoli ci sono una serie di yacht alla fonda ma non si possono tuffare in acqua perché l’acqua è una merda. La gente usa i porti di Fondi e Civitavecchia perché il fondale del porto di Napoli è troppo basso. Ho dato tante idee. Ci vogliono vent’anni per fare una metropolitana. Perché De Luca è antipatico ai politici? Perché è un uomo del fare e chi fa diventa sgradevole perché per fare a volte devi sfanculare e questo alla gente non piace. Io lo posso fare perché non ho cadaveri nell’armadio, molti stanno zitti perché ce li hanno».

Ha trovato alleanze?

«Mio padre era un grande filosofo e diplomatico, laureato in lettere, giurisprudenza, filosofia, era molto amico dei russi all’epoca di Kruscev. Diceva sempre: tu Aurelio sei un guerriero. Io dicevo sì, mi piacerebbe essere un cavaliere della tavola rotonda. Purtroppo la gente è provocatrice e questi tornei cavallereschi si trasformano in vere battaglie, ma io non mi stanco mai. Mi porto dietro pochissime persone. La gente ti dice che hai ragione, ma poi scende nel compromesso perché è più facile».

Cosa farebbe per prima cosa a Napoli?

«Convincerei lo Stato a prendere misure importanti sul piano infrastrutturale. C’è una grande cultura partenopea, anche cultura di strada, che non va abbandonata, ma mutuata come attrattore sui visitatori. Alla città manca una classe dirigente con le palle, che abbia coraggio, e il coraggio viene se hai dei miliardi da investire. Il problema riguarda tutto il Sud.

Se per andare a Reggio ci metto 5 ore e posso morire perché mi lanciano i sassi, vuol dire che il territorio non funziona. Se ancora stanno facendo la ferrovia per Bari su un progetto del 2011… Ha mai parlato con un soprintendente? Ce ne sono alcuni straordinari e colti, ma quando sento che a Firenze c’è un signore come Commisso che ha già speso milioni e lo stadio non glielo fanno toccare perché è un monumento… ma monumento de che? La gente ogni giorno è vessata e vuole andare allo stadio per sfogare e tu gli impedisci di modernizzarlo perché non si può toccare? La sovrintendenza è straburocratizzata e politicizzata quindi magari è contro Commisso perché è americano e rappresenta un potere da annientare».

Sta smantellando lo Stato.

«Certo, perché lo Stato è perdente, vince perché siamo tutti silenti e appecoronati. Ci siamo accontentati della tv, della lavatrice, poi è venuta l’amante, poi ci siamo addormentati, non siamo capaci di prendere i figli a calci in culo e buttarli fuori casa, io i miei li ho buttati fuori a 18 anni.

Ci sono due schiere di personaggi: gli imprenditori che fanno impresa e poi i prenditori, che sono la maggior parte, manovalanza negativa, non creativa. Vorrei che lei mi seguisse per un mese e vedesse come si affrontano i problemi dall’avere l’idea di un film a realizzarla, tra ricerca degli attori, dei registi, fare il budget, in Italia e nel resto del mondo».

Ha avuto un mentore che le ha insegnato?

«Ho avuto due mentori: uno è l’umiltà, che pure essendo figlio e nipote di, a 19 anni alle 4 del mattino caricavo i camion aiutando macchinisti ed elettricisti sul set prima di passare nel mondo della produzione creativa e distributiva. Dovevo imparare, stavo andando all’Università, avevo bisogno di lavorare. L’altro mentore è stato il vero amico incontestabile e senza pretese di riscontro è stato mio padre».

È vero che suo padre le ha fatto crescere il suo rapporto con Napoli?

«Papà è andato via da Napoli negli anni ’30 per andare in Bulgaria e fondare un giornale. Mio zio Dino, che invece non aveva voglia di studiare, veniva mandato al Nord a riscuotere le cambiali dell’industria della pasta. Mio nonno lo vide arrivare dicendo che non gli piaceva quel lavoro, che voleva fare l’attore.

Allora lo mandò a Roma al centro sperimentale, gli disse che se entro un anno non avesse avuto successo sarebbe dovuto tornare in azienda. Dino ci andò, ma come attore non ebbe successo, capì che il suo futuro era dietro la macchina da presa. Quando Mario Soldati fece due film importanti sul Lago di Como, Dino illuminò tutto il lago su Piccolo mondo antico, anche se c’era l’obbligo di non illuminare, e divenne famoso. Ponti se lo chiamò e nacque la Ponti-De Laurentiis. Mio padre è sempre stato la parte intellettuale del gruppo. Quando Dino volle andare in America stufo della legge Corona, noi abbiamo ricominciato daccapo con Renato Pozzetto. Pensi la vision di mio padre».

Lei ha un bel rapporto con Carlo Verdone.

«Con Verdone c’è un’esclusiva che va avanti dal 2002, un’intesa profonda perché Carlo è un grande professionista, grande autore e grande amico. Mi diverte moltissimo perché è uno che anche sul piano della medicina sa tutto, è un malato immaginario, si inventa le cure, ha la pasticca per respirare, quella per fare pipì. Ci prende. È anche un po’ permaloso, quando lo prendi in giro su questo».

Come vede il futuro del cinema?

«Bene, perché vedo bene l’industria dell’audiovisivo. Se poi parliamo del cinema nelle sale lo vedo meno bene. E io ho le sale cinematografiche. Pur essendo un esercente non sono mai andato d’accordo con l’esercizio. Si sta alimentando la pirateria. Non si può immaginare. In America si spendono 50-60 milioni di dollari di pubblicità per il primo weekend di uscita, rincretinisco il mondo con la pubblicità.

È antidemocratico non dare la possibilità a tutti di vedere un’opera dell’ingegno come un film. Ho detto che in parallelo bisogna uscire in televisione, mettendo un prezzo virtuale più alto del cinema, in modo che l’esercente cinematografico non si veda discriminato. Ho detto: prendiamo lo 0,50% dell’incasso e lo diamo all’esercente per limitare le perdite. L’ho sempre detto. Ci è voluto il Covid per iniziare a farlo. Le serie tv sono diventate così importanti perché sono film che durano 10 ore e possono sviluppare i secondi e terzi personaggi».

Cosa c’è in Maradona che convince Pennac a fare uno spettacolo su di lui?

«Maradona è stato unico e irripetibile. La fortuna e la sfortuna è che lo hanno avuto i napoletani. I  napoletani non hanno capito che con un calcio malato e viziato dalle istituzioni non si può sempre vincere lo scudetto. Maradona gli ha portato due scudetti perché era un angelo del paradiso e della morte messo insieme. Faremo una serie tv in tre stagioni sulla storia del Napoli, la prima dal 1984 al 2001, dove c’è Maradona.

La stessa operazione fatta sulla pallacanestro, con interviste a chi ha giocato in quel Napoli, ci saranno 150 intervistati calciatori e la storia del Napoli, con le partite e ciò che ci è stato dietro, in 10 puntate. Poi la storia del Napoli dal 1924, prima della sua nascita, con la storia del ciuccio, fino al 1984. Questa sarà la seconda stagione. La terza stagione saranno i 17 anni della mia presidenza».

Vi siete presi anche il Bari. Il futuro è sempre più calcio o tv?

«Siamo entrati nel mondo dei gelati, delle costruzioni, delle automobili. Purtroppo sono un po’ bulimico sul piano della mia attività creativa. Quando mi viene un’idea sono attratto come con un’amante da accontentare. Il Bari è nato perché Decaro, del Pd di Bari, è un mio amico, mi ha chiamato e mi ha chiesto di interessarmene quando è fallito, visto che lo avevo fatto con il Napoli. Mi aveva chiesto un paio di pagine con la mia idea, me ne sono venute 30, e lui mi ha bombardato per prendere il Bari.

Allora l’ho proposto a mio figlio, che però mi disse che del calcio non voleva sapere nulla. Poi dopo due ore mi disse che aveva cambiato idea. Disse: in fondo calcio e cinema sono nel nostro Dna, se tu mi lasci fare dopo che hai avviato la cosa va bene. Lo rassicurai e così è stato e oggi è contentissimo. Se la gente sa fare io la lascio fare. Intervengo e non mi vergogno di farlo solo quando la gente non lo sa fare. Puoi fare anche lo scopino, ma devi essere il primo della città per trarne appagamento».

Chi è il re di Napoli, oggi?

«La simbiosi della città con tutto ciò che è bello, commestibile, mangiabile, odorabile, touchable. A Napoli c’è tutto questo. Napoli ce la può fare, ma non è Napoli, ripeto, è l’Italia che ce la deve fare, che è seduta ancora su se stessa, impaurita. Il Covid gli ha dato un bello schiaffone, mi auguro che l’abbia svegliata.

Andate a votare, dico a tutti, e quando si vota nel weekend incazzatevi sapendo che andrete fuori, lo fanno apposta. Dobbiamo arrivare al 95% dei votanti, la res publica è nostra, è vostra, ma se la lasciamo gestire a degli idioti che se ne approfittano, penseranno di noi che siamo dormienti e che ci accontentiamo di un bicchiere di vino, di un’automobile e di un’amante. Ma non è così.

Il Covid ci ha dato una sferzata che mi auguro che diventi trasformabile in positivo. Ormai anche i social sono abitati da gente che sono sa quello che dice. Poiché la gente legge sempre meno i giornali, perché sono in decadenza…».

Lei ce l’ha a morte con i giornalisti.

«Io non ce l’ho a morte con i giornalisti. Le mie conferenze stampa sono animate perché fanno delle domande del piffero. Non è che non le voglio sentire, è che sono banali. Io li chiamo i pennivendoli, perché quando lei legge quello che c’è scritto sul Corriere dello Sport, sulla Gazzetta, su Tuttosport, gli articoli sembrano fatti con la carta carbone, possibile che nessun ai si inventi qualcosa?

Ti pare che mentre un calciatore sta nello spogliatoio a concentrarsi, che c’è Manolas che dice le sue preghiere, bacia i santini, un altro con le mani giunte verso il cielo, chi ha la palla scesa, il pisello a destra, arrivano loro con le telecamere e dicono di avere il contratto con Sky? Quando dico che il calcio non funziona, è perché siamo vecchi. A me danno del visionario, preferisco avere una vision. Purtroppo quando ha cominciato Sky, era una signora televisione, di stile anglosassone, fortissima, oggi se vede la Rai o Mediaset sono addirittura meglio, perché hanno imparato da quel modello e si sono migliorate. Hanno anche il coraggio di fare un programma controcorrente con Pio e Amedeo e arrivare quasi a farsi fare causa».
