December, 1942
Despite the distance between the two, Clinchco is not much different from Zenie’s hometown. It’s got a different layout and more diversity. It’s in a different state. The town had a similar experience with the Depression in the thirties. The main source of income for most of the locals is the mining company that the town is named after instead of agriculture like at home. But nothing about it feels foreign. She’s a stranger here and is relying on the hospitality of her friend, and yet, she really does feel as if she’s coming home.
“That’s where I went to school,” Shifty explains as he tours her through the town. “Here’s the church my family goes to – Baptist, like most everyone else around here. I used to shine shoes on this corner. Best business, see, on Saturday afternoons.” Through it all, he saves the best for last. “And that is where I spent most of my free time.”
Clinchco’s woods are beautiful, deep, and cool, just like the ones back home. Even in winter, when most of the trees stand unclothed, their skeletal arms raised toward Heaven in worship, the steady heartbeat of life thrums through the place, giving it a different kind of beauty than the buds and flowers of the warmer months.
Shifty is in his element as he leads her through them, rifle slung over his shoulder and eyes on the branches above them, looking for any squirrels that might come scampering along. He tells her about the things his daddy taught him about listening and being prepared. It shouldn’t come as any sort of shock to Zenie that her friend grew up getting the same education from his father that she got from her grandmother as they foraged in the woods back in North Carolina. But somehow it still brings a kind of comfort – different from any that she’s felt before – to know that someone so similar to her exists, and that they’ve found each other.
Frying Pan really does have the best view, just like Shifty told her it would. Jacket collars pulled up to protect them against the winter wind, they stand at the top and survey the sprawl of mountains and hills and town from the precipice.
“Used to love comin’ up here with my daddy. Just to stand here and listen and try and use what he taught me.” He laughs, shakes his head. “And to flip coins in the air and shoot at ‘em. That way no one could complain, you know, about wasting money.”
“Probably a good thing you did it, though. The coins and the time with your dad, I mean. You’ll be more prepared than any of us when we get into combat.”
Shifty nods, forehead scrunched, just like it always does when he’s really thinking about something. “Kinda worries you, huh? Realizin’ that not everyone grew up learnin’ how to survive. Some of those guys never even held a gun before joinin’ up.”
“Well, if anyone is gonna survive, it’s you. I might know how to walk quietly and find food, but you’ve got eyes like a hawk and hearing to match.”
He laughs at first. Then he takes a step closer to her. “Close your eyes.”
“What?” He’s far too observant not to notice the way the breath hitches in her throat.
“Somethin’ my daddy taught me. Close your eyes.” When she does, she feels his gentle hands come up to cover them – no peeking allowed. A beat of silence passes, then another. Finally, he whispers, “What do you hear?”
Besides their quiet breathing, there isn’t much. A birdsong nearby that she doesn’t recognize. The gentle whistle and wheeze of the wind as it glides over the bare trees and rustles the leaves around their feet. If she really concentrates, she thinks she can hear the distant babbling and bubbling of a creek. She tells Shifty as much.
He’s smiling when he uncovers her eyes. “See, you’re good at this too, Tommy. Observation is a skill. One ya gotta keep sharp, or else you might get outta practice.” His voice holds a tone that she doesn’t recognize on the last sentence.
He stares out across the valley, so she does the same. She feels him glance at her. He opens his mouth, and she thinks that he might say something. Instead, he only lets out a breath, readjusts his rifle, and starts to walk back the way that they came.
“Mama is makin’ pie for dessert tonight. We don’t wanna be late for that.”
Tumblr media
There’s probably some sort of rule or commandment or something that Zenie breaks every time that she thinks ill of her own family. She’s never liked her father, and she harbors some sort of disappointment towards her siblings, and those feelings never fail to make her feel downright bad. Sure, lots of people probably wish for a different family or a different life at some point – but watching Shifty and his family, she can’t help but feel downright jealous.
The Powers’ household is filled to the brim with love. A warm household is something so foreign that Zenie feels like she needs to tread carefully or risk shattering it. But the love is strong, and even if she does trip, it doesn’t seem like it would shatter or cause any serious damage.
Shifty’s two youngest siblings are like him in that they’re good natured and kindhearted. Frankie, his youngest brother, asks them lots of questions about the Airborne and talks about how he can’t wait to be old enough to join up. Gaynell, his sister catches them up on the small-town goings-on and ribs Shifty good naturedly. In turn he’ll tug at her hair as she passes by, but there’s no malice in any of it – just the way that siblings can tease each other about small things without anybody getting their feelings hurt.
Then there are his parents. His mama is a beautiful woman of Scotch-Irish and Cherokee descent who is positively tickled that Shifty managed to befriend someone like himself so far from home. She’s so excited that Zenie, Shifty, and Earl McClung have all become friendly with each other that Zenie finds herself hoping that they can all three return someday after the war just to visit her.
She also wants to know all about where Zenie is from. Zenie hates lying to Shifty, and she finds that she hates using half-truths on his mama even more.
“What’s your town like, Tommy?” she’s keen to know. “Is it a lot like here?”
Zenie can’t bring herself to tell her that Clinchco, even though she’s been here all of a few days, seems friendlier and more homelike than, well, home. She doesn’t tell Mrs. Powers about how Shifty and Earl – besides her own sister, obviously – are the only other part-Indians that she’s ever really gotten to know – the only people whose experiences she feels like she can relate to in some way. She doesn’t tell her about how the kids at her school would war-whoop at her and run from her on the playground, begging her not to scalp them if she caught them during tag. She doesn’t tell her that she ran away because she felt like the walls of her own home were suffocating her and she couldn’t stand the sight of the streets and buildings that she had known all her life.
Instead she smiles and says, “Yes ma’am, but I think Clinchco is a lot nicer” and accepts the slice of chocolate pie that she’s offered after dinner. Mrs. Powers makes the best pie in the entire world; if she lived in Zenie’s town, she would have put the diner out of business a long time ago.
Shifty’s daddy is everything that a father should be – which is everything that Zenie’s own father is not. Mr. Powers is reserved, yet kind, and he has the same shy looking smile that Shifty does. He asks them lots of questions about their training and quietly tells them stories about fighting in the Great War long after everyone else has gone to bed. His laugh is loud and jolly, but he never raises his voice.
Tumblr media
Something about watching Shifty in Clinchco makes Zenie look at him differently. It’s strange, to mix the two worlds. Personally, she doesn’t mind it.
Back in the woods, Shifty’s words about observation being a skill were right. Of course he meant being observant while on the hunt or in combat, but Zenie can’t help but use the skill on him. Because she’s always known that he’s reserved and kind, but she never realized that he was humble or a prankster until she saw him with his parents and siblings.
“How are you with a gun, Thomas?” Mr. Powers asks during dinner on one of their last nights in Virginia. “Darrel said in one of his letters that most of the men in your company had never used a gun before.”
“Well, I’m nothing compared to Shifty. None of us are.”
Shifty’s cheeks take on a pink hue, like a soft sunset. “Lots of the men are fine shots. Thomas is one of ‘em.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t make expert marksman, like somebody did.”
Mrs. Powers’ face lights up. “Expert marksman?”
“Only two men in the whole company earned that title, and he’s one of them.” If he won’t brag about himself, then Zenie is happy to do it for him. It’s a hell of an achievement, and he and his family all deserve to be proud of it.
“You never mentioned that in your letters,” his daddy beams. “Congratulations, son!” He claps Shifty on the shoulder, and although the expert marksman in question shakes his head, he can’t stop smiling. When his family is done hugging him and mussing up his hair, he shoots Zenie a wink as his mama insists on everyone taking a helping of banana pudding as part of the celebration, and she feels herself break into a grin almost as big as his.
Tumblr media
They let Zenie have her own bedroom. It belonged to one of Shifty’s brothers before he joined up, and after all her time in the barracks with the rest of the company, lying alone in a bed is a welcome reprieve. She can relax, take off her bandages like Doc – or Gene, as he promises she can call him –  insists, and listen to the sounds of nature outside without fear of being found out every second.
It’s peaceful. A kind of peace that she’s never known, not even back in her own home in her own town. It would be nice, after the war, to return to Clinchco and enjoy it all again.
It’s in this peace that her mind wanders a little too far. If she had grown up here, or if Shifty was from her town, she wonders if they would have become friends. Of course then he would know her as Zenie instead of Tommy, but maybe that wouldn’t matter to him. Either way, they would have gone to school together, and he might have come to the diner after playing basketball with his friends and they could have palled around.
Granny would have loved him. They would have gotten along well. Shifty would have been welcome in their house while Granny was living with them. She would have smiled and looked the other way if he brought Zenie home late from wherever they’d been, and pretended not to notice if Shifty gave her a kiss goodbye at the door –
The thought is so sudden that she sits up in the bed. Besides the pale winter moonlight streaming into the room from the window, she’s alone. Yet somehow, she feels like she’s just been caught doing something completely and utterly wrong.
Why had she thought about Shifty kissing her? He’s her friend, just like Toye or Bill or Gene . . . None of those friends makes her feel giddy whenever they walk into a room, though. And even though she smiles at Luz and Bill when they make stupid jokes, she doesn’t smile in spite of herself if she catches one of them glancing at her like she does with Shifty.
All the feelings that she’s been ignoring or writing off wash over her then like a flood that’s trying to drown her. She’s only felt this way about a boy once. Elijah Woodard, back home before the war. He had not reciprocated, and Zenie found it hard to consider romance with any boy since then.
But now those feelings are back. Now they’re about one of the men that she’s become closest to since joining the Airborne.
And there’s nothing that she can do about them.

Microwave Safety: Tips for Safe Usage and Maintenance
Tumblr media
Modern kitchen equipment, such as the microwave, improves how every room in the house runs. A microwave is becoming an essential equipment for cooking and other household tasks because of how handy it is. The microwave does all tasks, including heating, baking, and even frying.
While technology has significantly simplified our lives in the kitchen, it also has a number of concerns. Due to improper handling of the device, burns, overheating, fire, and in a few rare instances, radiation damage, have been documented. If you use a microwave frequently, it's crucial to be knowledgeable about all the dangers it poses and how to avoid them. Do not forget to contact microwave oven repair services in that case.
Here are Some Safe Microwave Usage Tips
1. Each microwave has unique features and functionalities. Before using the microwave, it's vital to read the manufacturer's instructions. The user handbook includes instructions that detail suggested operating methods and safety measures.
2. Incompatible containers can result in undercooking and uneven cooking, and they can even catch fire and harm the microwave. The FDA advises using glass, ceramic, and plastic containers that are marked for microwave usage.
3. Avoid using aluminium foil or metal pans because they reflect microwaves. Additionally, using ordinary plastic containers is not a good idea because heat might melt them.
4. Keep hot water out of your microwave. Water that has been "super-heated" has been heated above the boiling point without causing it to boil. If water is heated over the boiling point, even the slightest movement or disturbance might cause the water to forcefully erupt out of the cup.
5. Regularly check your microwave for any form of leaks. Be on the lookout for any odd gas eruptions or strange scents. Additionally, the FDA advises against using an oven if the door doesn't close securely or is twisted, deformed, or in any other way damaged.
6. In order to stop radiation from escaping, microwaves are made to only work with doors closed. Use caution while using ovens that appear to function with the door open. If this occurs, the FDA advises that you cease using a microwave oven very away.
If you find any problem in your device then you must search for microwave repair service near me to get the solution.
7. To prevent fire inside the microwave, do not use any metal containers, metal utensils, or cookware with metal handles or trimmings. Before cooking food in the microwave, always remove the aluminium foil from it. Additionally, avoid using paper utensils or disposable paper cups for heating and cooking.
8. Avoid heating or cooking any food or drink that has a high potential for catching fire. The heating of such materials might result in a microwave explosion or fire.
9. Food and drink that have been sealed in packaging should not be heated. Such materials can explode inside the microwave when heated. Remove the food from its sealed container before heating it on a microwave-safe dish or utensil.
10. Keep the microwave out of the way of heat sources in the kitchen. Avoid placing it next to or below any cooking or heating equipment. This can cause the microwave to overheat.
11. When using a microwave, avoid covering the top vent. Additionally, don't use aluminium foil to cover any portion of the microwave. This may cause the appliance to overheat and occasionally even increase the danger of a fire.
12. Never try to use a microwave with the door open since doing so might expose you to microwave energy.
13. Keep the oven door closed and promptly shut off the power if any food or materials inside the oven catch fire.
14. After cooking or heating, let the dish or utensil rest in the microwave for a few seconds before removing it. This will lower the hot container's temperature and reduce the danger of burns or other injuries to the user.
15. To prevent fire or electric shock, oversize food containers shouldn't be cooked in a microwave.
16. Never use a microwave as a storage device; only keep the accessories the manufacturer suggests inside.
Only trained professionals should do maintenance on the microwave oven. In order to examine, repair, or calibrate your microwave, only contact professionals. There are many options you will get because now microwave repair at home is possible.

Long life for the olive oil
Tumblr media
Domestic oil can be recycled into biofuels for cars, new plastics, biodegradable material for packaging and cosmetics or soaps. From 2024 on, its collection and recycling will be mandatory.
Oil is liquid gold when it is produced, but also when it is thrown away. It is born from the olive, a national Mediterranean economic engine that brings together almost half of the olive oil production in the world. It has great gastronomic and nutritional qualities and is the basis of the Mediterranean diet. But at the end of its useful life, it also offers surprising possibilities related to the circular economy.
Currently, the vegetable oil used in cooking -both olive oil and sunflower oil- can be transformed into biofuels, new plastics and oleochemical compounds with which to make cosmetics or detergents. Such is the importance of this liquid that, as of 2024, domestic collection and recycling will be mandatory, as established by the new Waste and Contaminated Soil Law.[1]
An environmental issue
Vegetable oil can be used several times, but beware: there is no consensus on the number of times it can be cooked. A guide published by the Organization of Consumers and Users[2] explains that, whatever the variety, it can last up to 25 uses if the temperature does not exceed 180 degrees, it does not cool between batches and it is prevented from being exposed to light when cooking. . However, the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition[3] recommends new oil for each frying of potatoes.
Once its useful life is over, it is time to recycle it, an issue that is not only economic. According to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge[4], a litre discarded down the sink can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of water. Reseave[5], an authorised manager of this waste, estimates that two thirds of the oil consumed in Spain ends up in the sewage system, which causes problems in urban sanitation. To properly dispose of this liquid, it is enough to store it already cold in a plastic bottle and take it to the recycling bins on public roads or to clean points[6], both fixed and mobile. In Madrid, according to data from the City Council, there are about 550 points where citizens can deposit it.
Virginia Fernández de Marcos, manager of Eco Oleum[7], an authorised company that has been recycling used oil for 18 years, explains that the collection of the liquid differs depending on the origin of the oil: “In the hotel channel, it is collected with approved drums. In the industrial sector, containers with a capacity of around 1,000 litres are used. And in the domestic sphere with watertight and fireproof buckets, the inner part of the containers on public roads”.
The expert warns that in the containers they usually find improper waste, materials that should not be there and that hinder regeneration: "We find clothes, containers filled with liquids that are not oil...". And she underlines the importance of not mixing domestic oil with mineral oils such as car engine oils, which have their own recycling chains: "When it comes into contact with mineral oil, the vegetable oil becomes contaminated and the process fails" .
From the frying pan to the car engine
One of the most interesting recycling possibilities for vegetable oil is the production of advanced biofuels, renewable fuels that come from organic waste such as pruning residues, urban garbage or domestic oil itself. Susana Benedicto, transformation coordinator at the Repsol refinery in A Coruña, where hydrobiodiesel can already be made from hotel oil, understands that the abundance of this resource opens up a market to explore: "With some prior analysis and an adequate pre-treatment, any type of frying oil can be transformed. It is a large amount of waste to which we can give a second life”.
Benedicto highlights that the production and use of these biofuels reduces CO₂ emissions by 90% compared to traditional fuels. In addition, they are compatible with the current engines of any road transport vehicle. “Biofuels are a real and available solution to reduce emissions immediately. They are going to be essential to decarbonize all transport sectors, especially those that need to travel long distances, ”she explains.
Another novel alternative is the manufacture of new types of plastics from used oil. Nuria López, a researcher in the packaging group at the Technological Institute of Plastics[8]-Aimplas[9], is one of those responsible for the development of a bio-bio polymer (of biological origin and biodegradable) from the bacterial fermentation of used oil: "We have synthesized a renewable and highly degradable material in different environments, both outdoors and in the ocean”. With this polymer, at the moment, the team is manufacturing containers for wet wipes, but the researcher indicates that it is adaptable to a wide range of products, such as bottles, flexible food containers or plastics for agricultural uses.
Oleochemicals can also be obtained from domestic oil, a material with which to make detergents, cosmetics or paints. Some companies even offer home recycling lots to turn oil into liquid detergent in just a few steps. A world of possibilities for a unique product.

Health Benefits of Cooking in Cast Iron Cookware
Cast iron cookware outperforms every other cookware in terms of durability, heat retention, inherent non-stick properties, and cost. However, because cast iron cookware is heavy and needs upkeep or seasoning, not all meals may be cooked. Rust develops on cast iron due to improper maintenance.
What is cast iron? Cookware of seasoned cast iron comprises 98 percent iron and 2 percent carbon alloy. Iron is melted in furnaces reaching 2,800 °F for all pots, skillets, and pans in one piece. The molten iron is then poured into molds lined with steel, pig iron, and metal scraps.
The metal is chopped, polished, and cleaned after cooling before even being “seasoned,” or oil-coated, and heated once again. Consequently, the cookware has a naturally nonstick surface that becomes better with use.
Benefits of Cast Iron Chefs have historically chosen cast iron, but as health concerns regarding alternate nonstick cooking materials grow, it is making a comeback in domestic kitchens. While the safety of other cookware materials is a heated topic, cast iron offers several undeniable benefits.
Cookware weight Cast-iron cookware’s substantial weight in this situation is both a benefit and a drawback. Because of the weight makes it suitable for camp cooking and sturdy, long-lasting, and adaptable to frying pans, pots, and skillets. There is also the matter of weight; cast iron is heavy, and there is no way around it.
Design Shapes, sizes, and applications are available in a wide variety. Cooking implements include skillets, griddles, pots, Dutch ovens, and others. They all have robust bases, heavy lids, thick walls, and roomy handles for portability.
Non-Stick by Nature A well-seasoned pan has a natural nonstick quality. But before adding the food, the pan has to be hot to be nonstick. A sticky situation will arise if, for instance, poached egg batter is added to a cold skillet and allowed to rest while the pan gradually warms up.
Cast iron may be protected by seasoning, making it easier to use. Chefs have a lot of disagreements over seasoning techniques, but they always include heating and lubricating the pan.
Even cast iron that has already been seasoned has to be seasoned before use. This is due to the increased nonstick properties of well-cast iron cookware.
Oven Safe Cookware made of cast iron features handles made of cast iron, making it oven-safe. The handles are concurrently cooked and cast in one piece along with the saucepan or skillet.
A pan may be easily transferred from a stovetop to an oven without melting or warping. Compared to most other cookware materials, cast iron is more heat-resistant.

You deserve to be happy
Song: There for you - Martin Garrix + Troye Sivan (!) I will follow you into the dark - Death cab for cutie (Covered by YUNGBLUD and Halsey)
So, this fanfic is inspired on this post (you have no idea how long it took me to have a link that included all the reblogs). Of course I got a little very carried away and it turned 4 pages long. Oh well, I hope it lives up to your expectations, @princess-of-fandom!! The quote at the end is part of this post by @dylanholyhellobrien. With all the credits given, enjoy!! (if you feel like the improper credits were given, be sure to dm me, I don’t mind at)
PS: I don’t have ao3 hence why I post it here. If you want to post it anywere, ao3 or fanfiction.net, on behalf of me, you can, but please give the proper credits and message me so that I can check it out :)
Unedited (I tried my best, but English isn’t my native language.)
The contours of the trees that lined the horizon finally regained shape under the guidance of the first sun rays. In the dead of the night, the huts, tents and trees had blotched together with the sky to assemble ill-proportioned shadows that made Thomas’s heartbeats rise to feverish heights.
The hammock wobbled as he swung his legs over the edge to find solid ground. He steadied himself against the stripped bark of the pole and counted his breaths until they were calm and measured.
“Beautiful, huh?” Minho said when he noticed Thomas’ gaze on the horizon. His face finally started to lose the last traces WCKD’s experiment. The light in his eyes has returned in full force and gone was the ghostly white sheen on his cheeks.
Thomas didn’t share the sentiment. “It’s too alike.”
Minho sighed. “But it will never be the same.” There was one thing that still seemed in WCKD’s possession; the fire that lingered in his friend’s voice, the kind that used to deliver his characteristic snarky comments tirelessly. Or perhaps it wasn’t WCKD that took it.
They watched as the sun climbed higher and higher and other immunes starting to appear from their tents. A couple people Thomas had befriended during the course of the first few weeks greeted them as they strolled by.
“You’re hungry?” Minho, who still by his side, jerked his chin over to where Frypan was preparing what seemed to be a thick soup. Just when Thomas was about to say no, hunger hit him like a punch in the gut.
“Yeah, sure.” He ignored the relieved look his friend shot him.
The familiar sound of pots and pans scraping against the metal of spoon and knife like tools reached them, Frypan looked up and tossed them a wave.
“Saved something for you, shanks.”
A bowl with soup was thrust into his hands. Thomas brought it to his lips, avoiding the chipped edges. It tasted like wet ashes in his mouth, something frequent when it came to food, but it was better than nothing. He smiled and nodded at Fry before wiping his mouth.
After breakfast, he and Minho headed to fields. As one of the first things to establish, it started to become larger day by day.
Soon, it will be bigger than the gardens in the Glade.
That was like another punch in the gut. Thomas staggered on his feet. The only thing that kept him spiraling down to the ground was the smooth weight of the necklace. It was all he had. Whenever his heart would be choked by grief, unable to beat any longer, Thomas’d swear the necklace started beating instead, reminding him of his friend’s wishes. You deserve to be happy.
“Are you okay?” Minho’s face swam into focus. Thomas managed to respond with a shaky nod.
“Yeah... yeah, don’t worry ‘bout me. I’m... fine.” The last word needed to be wrenched of his tongue but he was glad that his voice didn’t crack. To strengthen his reassurance, Thomas grabbed a shovel and set to work.
The day gliding by, like a boat on the peaceful water. Large campfires were howling their scorching anguish to the night sky as people gathered around them. Thomas watched as the workers started to leave the fields, collecting the shovels in various bins of all shapes and sizes that stood near the entrances.
One of the boys who had worked alongside him walked past him. Upon noting that Thomas was still rooted in the same spot, he freed himself from the group.
“We’re roundin’ up, Tommy.”
Tommy. The moment he closed his eyes, he was back in the maze-like realms of his mind. Where memories piled up on top of memories to create the walls and ivy sealing them away from focus. Now they were moving, and the ivy was tearing like wet paper.
Tommy
“Don’t!” Thomas lurched forward to grab the boy’s shirt, nearly lifting him off his feet. “Don’t,” he repeated. “Don’t ever call me that, only he could!”
Thomas felt himself being janked away by someone. Other people entered from the side of his blurred vision, crowding him and the other boy.  He lowered his eyes to the ground. A hand clamped around his shoulder for the second time this day.
“Allright, slim it everyone.” Minho’s voice topped that of the other’s as he stood besides Thomas, with his hand still on his back. The murmur remained among the immunes as their gaze drifted from Thomas to the shell-shocked boy, whose eyes already harboured a faint understanding.
“Okay.” Minho muttered once the crowd had settled down. Thomas could feel his friend’s gaze tracing the edges of his face. “Thomas, what happened, man?”
“He…” Thomas struggled to catch his breath. “He called me Tommy.”
“He… what?” Minho blinked stupidly. Like… Like he has forgotten who’d always say that.
Thomas had already turned around, shrugging his way through the crowd, ignoring Minho’s calls. The blurry remnants of unshed tears dotted his vision as he stumbled down the path. The soft earth underneath his feet turned into the fine sand of the beach. Large waves were smashed against the sides of the ship while others reached the shore, dumping their foamy residue in the sand before retreating again.
He pursued his trek along the beach. Looking back over his shoulder, he could see the smoke of fire trying to reach for the moon until they were shattered and dispersed by the wind. The sound of laughter was drowned out by that of the waves as Thomas neared a large rock formation. Amidst the asymmetrical blocks of grey sat a black, rounded stone with a name notched into it. Upon coming closer you could see delicate leaves carved underneath the name.
Thomas didn’t know when he stopped visiting Newt, but now that he was here, it felt like coming home to an empty house. He sank to his knees while soft sobs wretched themselves past his lips.
Instead of saying something to the boy sleeping beneath the stone, Thomas settled on shifting the sand through his fingers, gathering the grains in small piles besides the grave. Thomas watched the tide change.
“Thought you’d be here.” Minho took his place next to Thomas.
“Sorry, I just… I just lost my shit when-”
Minho cut him off. “Don’t worry ‘bout it. Clyde’s not mad.”
Absence of either of their voices left the silence to be filled by the sound of waves and screams of seagulls.
“Is this a closed meeting or can we join?” Brenda’s voice filled the silence. She, Gally and Frypan were standing behind them, holding a bottle of what seemed to be the drink Gally used to make back in the Glade.
As an answer, Thomas scooted to one side to make room and together they formed a semi circle around Newt’s grave. The silence was filled by the waves once more while they passed the bottle from hand to hand until it was empty.
“Do you remember, Gally? When we snuck into Fry’s pantry to steal some jam and using it to dye Newt’s hair?” Minho suddenly asked.
Between a couple snorts of laughter Gally managed to muster a nod.
“So it was you?” Frypan gave both of them an incredulous look. Thomas could laughter bubbling from his lips.
“Why did I never hear of this story?”
Gally shrugged. “Newt can be pretty scary when he places a knife on your throat in the middle of the night…” The grumpy faced blond shuddered.
“At least he got the jam out.” Fry muttered.
“Not completely, though,” Thomas could feel a grin making its way on his face. “I remember when coming up in the box, Newt’s hair had this pink shine.”
Each story or memory that came afterwards earned round of loud laughter. Brenda, at some point, went back to the camp to get some more drinks and the laughter went on.
You deserve to be happy. Maybe, just maybe, that wasn’t as far away as Thomas thought.
“If there is a reason why I’m still alive when everyone who loves me has died, I’m willing to wait for it.”

Letters to my Parents - Saturday 1 Augustus 1992 - by Alinda
Saturday 1 Augustus 1992
Dear mom and dad,
I miss Hogwarts. It’s like I have a constant stomach-ache, that’s how much I miss it. I miss the castle, the secret passageways and ghosts, the classes, the mail arriving by owl. Hedwig is locked up in her cage and she keeps waking uncle Vernon in the early morning because she’s bored and makes loud hooting noises. We have an argument about it almost every morning. And yesterday on my birthday I accidentally said ‘you’ve forgotten the magic word’ when Dudley told me to pass the frying pan and the room exploded. Dudley fell off his chair, aunt Petunia screamed and uncle Vernon jumped to his feet and roared at me, telling me the M word was forbidden and that I shouldn’t threaten Dudley. But all I meant was please. I just wanted Dudley to say please.
I also miss the banquets in the Great Hall, sleeping in the dungeon, visiting Hagrid in his cabin next to the forbidden forest, Quidditch, and most of all I miss my friends. I haven’t had any letters, or birthday cards or presents. I feel really lonely. It seems that Draco and Hermione don’t miss me at all. Neither of them has written to me all summer, even though Draco had promised me to write as often as possible. And he said he would try to convince his parents that I could have my birthday party at his house. Well, that didn’t happen since that was yesterday. I just can’t believe that they have forgotten my birthday.
And on top of all that, the Dursleys had completely forgotten my birthday too. For one moment at breakfast, I had hoped they remembered when uncle Vernon cleared his throat and said that it was a very important day. But he was just talking about his dinner party with a rich builder and his wife. They had a schedule for everything, and my only role was to stay in my bedroom, without making a noise and pretending I’m not here. O, how I wish I wasn’t here, but at Draco’s or even at Hermione’s house. Then maybe I wouldn’t have just had the worst birthday ever.
It all started in the afternoon when I saw two enormous green eyes between the leaves of the hedge. I jumped to my feet, but the eyes blinked and vanished because Dudley walked towards me. He taunted me; he made fun of the fact that I hadn’t gotten any birthday cards and questioned if I had any friends at my school. I tried to play it cool, to not let Dudley know how much it hurt me that none of my friends had remembered my birthday. Especially Draco, I thought there was something between us, but maybe I was wrong. Maybe he doesn’t like me as more than just friend. I don’t know, I only know it hurts.
Dudley also asked me why I was staring at the hedge, and I made up a lie, saying I was thinking of the best spell to set it on fire. Dudley stumbled backwards at once and started stuttering that his dad will send me away and that I have nowhere else to go because I don’t have any friends. And that just made me angry, so I started saying nonsense words pretending to do magic. Dudley ran back inside to his mom and she made me do work around the house all day. I wasn’t to have anything to eat until it was finished.
So I ended up cleaning the windows, mowing the lawn, trimming the flowerbeds, pruning and watering the roses and repainting the garden bench on my birthday. And when I was finished Aunt Petunia gave me two slices of bread and a lump of cheese for dinner, while the roast pork was sizzling in the oven for their dinner party.
When I had finished I was sent upstairs, where I had to pretend that I wasn’t here. Only there was one little problem. When I walked into my room something was sitting on my bed. It was a little creature, with large, bat-like ears and bulging green eyes the size of tennis balls. It were the same eyes I had seen in the hedge earlier that day. As soon as the creature saw me he slipped off the bed and bowed so low that the end of its nose touched the carpet. He said it was an honour to meet me. He told me his name was Dobby and that he was a house-elf. And everything went downhill from there.
Dobby had come to tell me something, but it was difficult, according to him. So I asked him to sit down, and that just made Dobby wail. I tried to make him quiet down and managed to get him on the bed, telling him that he couldn’t have met many decent wizards if they had never asked him to sit down before. Only that made him jump up again and he started to bang his head on the window, shouting bad Dobby. That made Hedwig wake up and she also started making loud noises.
It seems that Dobby is bound to serve one family and he had to punish himself because he almost spoke ill of them. He will also punish himself when he gets back home because his family doesn’t know that he came to see me. He can’t escape them, he needs to be set free. So I asked him if I could help him and that just made him wail again. He said he had heard of my greatness, but not of my goodness. I told him I wasn’t great, that I’m not even top of my class, that Draco and Hermione are fighting over that position. It was painful thinking of them, so I stopped that line of the conversation.
Dobby went on to say he knew I triumphed over the Dark Lord twice, the last time only a few weeks ago. And when I confirmed, he said I was valiant and bold, but that Dobby has come to protect me, to warm me that I must not go back to Hogwarts. Well, that isn’t an option. So I told Dobby that I have to go back. I don’t belong here in the muggle world, I belong in the wizarding world, at Hogwarts. The only thing that kept me going for the last weeks is the knowledge that I’ll be going back there on the first of September.
Of course, Dobby didn’t agree with this. He was certain I would be in mortal danger if I would go back. Because there is a plot to make the most terrible things happen at Hogwarts this year. Dobby said he had known it for months and that I was too important to put myself in peril. I still don’t know what terrible things or who are plotting them, because Dobby wouldn’t tell me. He just started to bang his head against the wall. I did learn it wasn’t Voldemort who was planning it. But when Dobby tried to tell me more he just started banging my desk lamp against his head and making a lot of noise.
It was then that uncle Vernon came upstairs and I hit Dobby in the closet. Uncle Vernon was very upset and told me to keep quiet, or else I would wish I was never born. And he is right, I kind of wish that now. After uncle Vernon had left I told Dobby I had to go back because it is horrible here and that I think I’ve got friends at Hogwarts. And then I found out that Dobby had been stopping their letters from reaching me. He had them with him and I could see letters with Hermione’s handwriting, with Hagrid’s and Ron’s untidy scrawl. I didn’t see any letters from Draco.
I asked Dobby if there were any letters from Draco, but he wouldn’t tell me. He said I could have my letters if I promised not to go back to Hogwarts. But I told him no and that he should give me my letters. And then everything went wrong.
Before I could reach Dobby he had darted out of my room and down the stairs. Dobby was sitting on top of a cupboard and Aunt Petunia’s pudding was floating up near the ceiling. I begged Dobby to put it back, but he wouldn’t unless I would promise not to go back to school. I told him I couldn’t and then he dropped the pudding on the floor and vanished.
I had to clean the kitchen and uncle Vernon promised to flay me when the Masons had left and I had hoped it wouldn’t get any worse than this, but it did. Only an owl came to deliver a letter from the improper use of magic office of the ministry of magic. It turned out that Mrs Mason is mortally afraid of birds and the Masons left, making uncle Vernon lose the deal he wanted to make with Mr Mason. Uncle Vernon then locked me in my room with a mad gleam dancing in his eyes. He laughed about that I was never going back to Hogwarts, and that I would get expelled if I would try to magic myself out of my room.
And Uncle Vernon has kept true to his word. I’m locked in my room. A man has fit bars on my window and uncle Vernon made a cat-flap in the bedroom door, where they pass through small amounts of food. I only get let out to use the bathroom in the morning and evening. Otherwise, I’m to stay here, in my room, by myself, all alone, with no way of escape.
I don’t know what to do now. I have no way to contact anyone who could help me. And I still don’t have my letters. No kind words of Hermione telling me summer will be over before I know it. No funny stories from Ron about his crazy family. No words from Draco to ease my mind. And even if I had the letters, I’m sure there weren’t any letters from Draco between them. I would have recognized his handwriting. And that is one of the things that keep me up at night. Why didn’t he write to me? I thought that the kiss he gave on my cheek when we arrived at King Cross mend something. And I had hoped that maybe we could become boyfriends. Why would he kiss me and then change his mind?
The other thing keeping me awake is Voldemort. I still have nightmares about him, about his livid face, his wide, mad eyes. I wake up drenched in cold sweat, wondering where Voldemort is now and if he found another way to come back. And would he come after me again if he has?
I hate my life right now. What is it worth being alive when I can’t go back to Hogwarts? When I can never find out why Draco didn’t write to me. When I will never see my friends again. Maybe it would have been better if I had died when Voldemort killed both of you, or when I met him again only two months ago. Then I wouldn’t be alone and locked up now, but with both of you. That sounds so much better than this.
I love you and miss you so much right now.
I wish I was with you both.
Your Harry James Potter.

The sun bled through the sky with the first light of dawn, rays warming the horizon as the city moved into life. Motion stirred within the heart of Neo Domino, and with it, the day began anew as people awoke; the sounds and sights of the city pulsing to the tune of commotion and commerce.
Even the outer districts stirred with that same life; people going about their affairs as the morning light brought new promise. The highways stretching across the ocean to Satellite stood dotted with vehicles, making their daily commute or trade; business continuing as usual.
Yet some life was not at all content with the promise of a new morning.
Aki lay upon the upstairs couch, eyes tracing the lines of the ceiling above her. Weariness wrapped about her like the very blanket she had burrowed beneath, but it had nothing against the worry that clung to her thoughts like a vice. What few hours of sleep had blessed her seemed to be worth naught as she drew in a quiet breath, releasing it in a gentle sigh.
No, there were so many things that had plagued her mind in the darkness, and laying there while the sun hung in the sky would solve none of them.
Pushing back her covers, she sat upright, feet grazing the rug as she ran fingers through her hair. She didn’t doubt that the others in the house had as little sleep as she did, what with the silent anxiety still hanging thick within the air.
She only hoped that there would be answers with the dawn of a new day, so with a quiet sigh across lips, stood and walked to where she knew coffee lurked.
With the silence that hung thick in Poppo Time, she knew that she was the first one to rise, and had it been any other sort of day, she may even have relished the time to herself. Now though, it felt almost stifling, and Aki knew there would be no enjoying this morning.
Slender fingers ran through her hair again, stopping midway as brown eyes closed and fingertips massaged her scalp deeply, almost relishing the feel as weariness tugged at her senses. It was an action she used almost religiously when it came to long nights of study, yet she never thought she’d be using it to relieve this kind of tension.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
The gentle voice startled her lightly, and she jerked about to face Crow. The redhead could only snicker softly as he finished descending the ladder, and the soft smile found her lips once more.
“You’re quiet as a mouse, you know that?” she remarked, shaking her head.
Crow could only wink at her. “You learn to tiptoe around kids that are light sleepers,” he answered simply. Fingers reached for a second mug, and Aki drew the sugar jar towards her, knowing his preferences. Another by-product of raising his children, no doubt; that sharp, yet occasional, sweet tooth of his.
“Not thanks to surviving in Satellite?” she asked with curiosity, eyes wanting to wander over to him as she made them both coffee.
The simple question lingered briefly in the air, and Crow only gave a brief noise of acknowledgement. He made his recent past no secret around the young woman; she was as genuinely curious as the twins, and he saw no reason to deny them the truth. There was no hesitation in his answer, and he shook his head lightly.
“Probably got it from there first, but it’s handy around the kids secondly,” he gave a quiet sigh between teeth as a steaming mug was slid towards him. “Makes it kind of hard to teach them proper morals when the only way to raise them is to use improper ones,” he added, lifting the mug to his lips and blowing on it lightly.
“Mm, you’ve lived there longer than they have, and I see no evidence of that in you,” Aki replied simply, as if it were as plain to see as the red in his hair. In her eyes, it really was. “You did more than survive off improper morals, Crow. You learned what was right and wrong, and you stuck to your beliefs.” Fingers dipped into the fridge, hunting for something suitable to eat, and she settled for eggs. Everything could be solved with eggs, her mother always told her as a child, and she saw no reason to ignore that now. Perhaps when everyone else was up, she could prepare some for them, too.
“Even if you aren’t with them now,” she continued, “you’ve given them a firm foundation of proper morals, as was given to you as a child. They know the difference between right and wrong; they’re good kids, Crow, and they’re in good hands.” She lifted her eyes, meeting his with a gentle smile. The redhead could only return the warm gesture, feeling something in his chest swell with something akin to pride at her words. He cradled the mug a little closer to his chest and could only give a soft nod for a moment, words faltering on his tongue in light of her praise.
Aki ducked her gaze away, feeling the weight of that gaze upon her as shyness crept through her once more. “It’s just... really easy to see how much they look up to you, so I doubt they’d do anything to disappoint you. Nor you disappoint them,” she finished softly, flicking the stovetop on and setting a frypan atop it.
“To answer your question, though... well... I was just worried about what today would bring,” she added, staring aimlessly at the empty pan.
Crow gave a faint murmur in response, casting grey eyes to the ladder. “You mean Atem,” he replied. “Yeah, today’s going to be... interesting.” He gave a heavy sigh and rubbed at the back of his neck. “He’s a strong guy, but so’s Yusei, and I’ve seen him break under the weight of something terrible before.”
The young woman’s brow knit as gathered her ingredients together. “You think this is just as bad...” she murmured, already knowing his response. The nod from the corner of her eye confirmed it for her.
“Without a doubt...” the redhead breathed, trailing off and closing his eyes as he took another sip of coffee. “Last night... when I found him, he could barely get his words out, but there was one sentence he couldn’t finish back there. He almost told me something about ‘everyone,’ and from his actions, I can only guess it was his friends from his own time.”
Aki blinked at him, surprise covering her features as she replayed the events of the previous night in her mind. Just what had happened in the Spirit World to cause all of this? Her brow knit faintly and she glanced at Crow, but the words dried upon her tongue. How best to phrase this?
The Signer drew her bottom lip between teeth, turning back to their breakfast as she poured it into the frying pan. “I might be overthinking things, but... the area we found him in last night... I don’t think it was a coincidence. He went there because it was somewhere familiar to both Yugi and himself.”
Crow could only stare at her, running the layout of that area through his head. Old Domino was... well, of course it would be an area familiar to him, but why would Aki be so sure of that particular place?
“When they first passed it a few weeks ago,” she began, as if dipping so easily into his thoughts, “Rua was quizzing him on places, helping him remember them as they were, and how they looked now; almost like a game between the two of them. Atem recalled the place easily, so I... I think it was somewhere familiar to both he and Yugi,” she finished softly, stirring her scrambled eggs.
“So he went somewhere familiar to them...” Crow trailed off, sadness creasing his brow. He gave a quiet sigh, grey eyes closing momentarily. “It doesn’t surprise me; not really. I mean, I guess if we all had the chance, we’d do the same, right?”
Aki watched him for a moment, gaze trailing back to breakfast as she lifted the pan from the stove. “I guess you’re right...”
“But?”
Her eyes met Crow’s once more, and he gave her a brief raise of his brows. “There’s a ‘but’ in there, I can tell,” he told her simply. The gentle smile found her lips and she split up breakfast for the two of them.
“Well... not so much a ‘but...’” she began, moving to clean her work as she spoke. “That area... even though it’s Old Domino, we... learnt about a little of it in history once; back when I was a little girl. Even now, they’re still teaching it to those who study duel history, but that area is as close as you can get to where the original Kame Game shop once stood.”
Crow stiffened with shock as grey eyes widened. Aki was surprised he didn’t drop his mug with the sudden reaction.
“Then last night... he...” the redhead breathed, realisation blanketing him. He reached up to bury a hand in his hair. “Geez, no wonder he was so distressed about everything... On top of what he found out, he also had to deal with finding that out.”
Aki gave a faint nod, sliding his plate over to him. “I didn’t realise it myself until this morning.” She stared down at her own plate, worry lining her brow for a brief moment before she closed her eyes with a heavy sigh. “But...”
The young woman reopened her eyes with a warm smile, fixing her gaze upon Crow. “No matter what, all we can do is help him the same way as we help each other.”
Crow returned her smile with a bright one of his own, lifting his coffee mug to clink against hers. “You’ve got that right. He’s one of the team now, and that’s that!”
With a gentle laugh from the young woman, it was decided, and the anxiety that ran through the silent building seemed to slip away, if only for a moment. The world about them relaxed, and took a deep breath as their eyes fixed upon the future.
As life began to stir within Poppo Time, the remaining residents descended into what could only be called a stifled sensation of business as usual. Everyone could feel the tension that lay thick in the air; even Aki and Crow, who had spoken at length with the others about their conversation earlier in the day, found the pressure of remaining hopeful to be an arduous one.
The only one who remained absent was the person at the centre of their concerns.
Yusei only confirmed that the pharaoh had chosen to remain where he was, refusing to budge from his place, buried beneath the covers, and could not deny him. Later, was all he had been told.
If the mechanic was seen throughout the day absently running fingers across the neck of his shirt, or along the back of his neck, or even chewing his bottom lip, surely it was a habit borne of worry, the others thought. Everyone was concerned, so of course Yusei felt the burden of worry upon his own shoulders, no matter the distractions of the day. If only they knew he still had the memory burning over and over in his mind of the pharaoh buried so close to him, sobbing brokenly against his chest until exhausted sleep claimed him.
As the sun rose across the sky on that second day, and hours slipped between them all unnoticed, the day seemed to come and go without any sign of Atem. Rua had been the first to anxiously peek through a crack in the door – just to make sure he was even still in the building. The sleeping form in a tousled pile of blankets did nothing to sate his worried heart, however, and the boy slipped back from the room, worrying his bottom lip.
Night soon wrapped about the city, the stars dotting the velvet sky as much as the twinkling lights of Neo Domino itself. Yusei slipped into his room, closing the door gently behind him and padding silently across the floor. Only when he neared the bed did the figured within stir faintly.
“Yusei..?” Atem breathed sleepily, voice dry and coming from somewhere beneath the covers.
The mechanic swallowed lightly, silent as he gently lifted the blankets and slipped in behind the duellist, curling an arm about his chest and holding him close.
“I’m here,” he replied softly, pressing his lips to the crown of Atem’s head. “I’m here...”
The pharaoh’s composure remained steadfast for only a handful of heartbeats before it began to fray anew, and fingers tightened over Yusei’s. The Signer merely held him firmly, feeling him tremble.
Even at the gentle feeling of those fingers holding him safe and sound, warmth enveloping his senses and threatening to ground him against the tidal wave of ache building in his chest, Atem could do little else but realise with startling clarity that all was lost to him. It was an entirely alien feeling and it left him feeling absolutely gutted; even in the wake of losing his partner so many times.
At least during those times, as heartwrenching and tragic as they felt, there was some small amount of comfort in knowing his friends remained by his side, supporting him, consoling him in times of grief, and simply being there for each other.
Yet here?
Neo Domino felt as cold and broad and empty as his heart.
“I'm here...”
True to his word, the mechanic stayed, warm and gentle at his back. All through the night, strong arms held him close, letting him spill his pain against their skin. As the first tint of deep purples began to settle across the sky, heralding the coming dawn, only then did the pharaoh succumb to slumber, exhaustion dragging him under.
Only then, when he felt that ragged form relax within his arms, and breathing slip to something less burdened, did Yusei close his own eyes, lips pressing gently to that dark hair.
As both of them held each other in rising of the sun, both remained oblivious in slumber to the tender crimson glow surrounding marked flesh, as if the Crimson Dragon himself shared the very grief of that burdened heart.
***
Blackbird gave an explosive roar of throttle as it began the slow approach to Poppo Time, its rider gearing down effortlessly and guiding the sleek machine along the final stretch of road. Crow almost bit back the heavy sigh as he drew closer, knowing that in the days that stretched on there had been little change within their normally happy household.
Still, as heartless as it sounded in words, life for the Signers and that of Neo Domino wound on for the next week. The duellist knew in his very soul that there was no coming back from what Atem had experienced that night - regardless of what that really was.
The frown creased lightly on his brow. Following what he knew, piecing together what information he had... there was only so much that could point them all in the right direction without the pharaoh telling them in his own words what that really was.
Crow suspected enough, and it was no wonder he was suffering.
He could never put a timer on grief, no matter its form, yet the pharaoh had reduced himself to an utter shell of what he once was. Something had to give, but he had to wonder exactly what that would be before the tension snapped, and something shattered all over again.
Grey eyes blinked as he nearly missed his destination, realising he'd been utterly caught up in his train of thought, and turned neatly about the fountain and into the awaiting garage. For all his thinking and overthinking, he was going to end up like Yusei, came the soft taunt in his mind, wringing the faint smile to his lips.
He glided to a stop within the warehouse, killing the steady thrum of the engine and sliding Blackbird forward on her stand. It was only as he was shedding the comforting weight of his helmet did he glance up to spy Atem watching him arrive from the landing, and Crow greeted him silently with a warm smile and a simple wave.
Grief may have had no timer in his mind, but there was something to be said for stagnation.
It was a subject that Crow himself knew all too well, and wished only to release the flow once more.
"Hey there, anything exciting happen while I was out?" he called to the pharaoh, sliding off his bike and setting his helmet upon the seat. It might not have been normal by any standard, but it was anything to help the young man cope. Atem parted his lips to reply, hesitation changing his mind for a moment in time.
"No, ah... though... Bruno did ask me to tell you he and Yusei have gone to register for the WRGP," the quiet words came from him like a whisper, and Crow had to fight not to frown at how frail they sounded.
"Oh right, that was today, huh..." he murmured, rubbing his chin in thought. Well, at least the opportunity gave him a chance to plan. Or at the very least, wing something blindly; something he was very good at. "Say, can I ask you something?"
The pharaoh stared back at him, a mute nod as he began to walk down to the garage level.
"You're just about due to have that thing off, right?" Crow tapped his forearm for effect. "If you don't have any other plans for this afternoon, I could take you."
Atem stopped at the base of the stairs, staring in realisation at the brace that still wrapped about his arm. Had it... really been two weeks already? Time seemed to be slipping from him faster and faster these days. Crimson eyes narrowed faintly, brows set to a light furrow as he avoided that piercing gaze. Perhaps, then...
"I'd like that," the words slipped from him before he could really think about it.
Crow walked to him, that warm smile never budging as he placed a hand to his shoulder, oblivious to the surprise that swam within the other.
"Great! Wanna head out now?"
That caught the pharaoh by surprise, and again he held a moment of hesitation on his tongue. No, his mind breathed from its depths; to make a decision is to follow it through to the very end. Something that he once told others so proudly and firm. Absently, he reached a hand up to lightly curl about the brace on his arm.
"It's not going to be a bother, is it?" he asked quietly.
"A bother? Psh! A bother is Jack spending all our money on that acidic slop he calls good coffee," Crow replied with a short laugh. He gave a gentle squeeze to the pharaoh's shoulder. "This is just a guy helping out a friend."
Atem finally raised crimson eyes to meet those knowing grey eyes, surprise swimming within their depths. The warmth of those words, something so simple, felt like someone pulling the stitches from a wound unseen, and he swallowed against the lump of coal that rose to his throat. The simplest thing, the simplest words, and still...
Warmth welled in his eyes and the faint smile found his lips at last.
"... thank you..."
He didn't trust his voice to say anything further, and Crow - bless his wonderful soul - did nothing to press the issue, merely gave his shoulder a gentle pat as he drew away, retrieving a spare helmet and tossing it lightly to him.
"Best get going while the day's still warm. It'll be a squeeze with two of us, but it's better than walking," he said brightly, sliding Blackbird back off its stand to turn it aboutface.
Atem stood still, eyes upon the helmet in his hands as a thumb idly traced a seam upon it. For all that he had lost, there was still so much to gain...
Crimson eyes narrowed for a beat. Perhaps, then...
The riding duellist slid himself upon Blackbird once more, the soft leather giving a faint creak of well-worn protest. At least she was warm, which made the startup just a tad quicker, Crow mused as he tucked hair back within the confines of his helmet. With the faint click of electrics connecting, Momentum thrummed in response and the engine exploded to life once more.
He felt Atem tuck in behind him, one arm snaking about his waist.
Crow gave a faint smile at the other duellist's quiet but solid response. It was nowhere near alright, but at least he was trying so, so hard. He reached up with a gloved hand and gave a faint squeeze to the other's.
With a short rev of the engine, he gently guided Blackbird from the garage, taking his time as they moved through the quiet backstreets of their little suburb and into the steadily growing traffic of the highways.
Neo Domino sprawled out in the distance from where they rode, all but ablaze in the light of the setting sun, and Atem couldn't help but stare idly at it as traffic streaked past them. It still felt like some lucid dream that he was waiting to awaken from. Yusei's world... how long had he been here now? Only a month? Two? And yet already so much had happened.
Brows furrowed as he recalled all the ways others had helped him from his arrival. The hospital staff, that officer - Ushio - a name that still seemed so strange to hear. Yusei himself and all his friends. Even though things had gone strangely awry between the Signers and their connection to Atem, they never once baulked at the chance to help him. To offer him assistance in this new world. To show him new things.
To be so patient and understanding.
Crimson eyes closed as he felt his grip tighten ever so slightly upon the riding duellist. He would never be able to repay their kindness, even if he were given another chance entirely.
Yet here he sat, realising all of this as the weight of grief began to shift. Ever since that night, it had all but blanketed his entire existence in a shrouding fog of loss. Everything had been pushed aside in the wake of that one moment as he learned the truth.
Utterly everything.
It was so oppressive that in his smothering wave of grief he forgot that there already were people here who cared deeply for him. Those who could help him heal, and those who never knew when to quit.
Atem opened his eyes, drawing a steadying breath and letting it slip from him in a shaky exhale. He brought his gaze up, glancing over Crow's shoulder and watching them weave between the traffic and below an endless array of signs as they began their approach to the city.
No, it wasn't alright; it would never be alright.
Yet there was always another tomorrow, and there were always others to help him see that tomorrow through.
The whisper of a smile glimmered on his lips.
It was time to start looking forward once more. One foot in front of another.
"Not going to sleep on me back there, huh?" Crow's voice cut through his thoughts like a hot knife through butter, and the pharaoh blinked at him for a moment, the smile still sitting on his lips.
"Just admiring the city... It's so beautiful in the sunset," he murmured through the headset. Memory tugged at the back of his mind, and he couldn't help the soft chuckle that fell from his lips. "...I never imagined the future of Domino City to be like this."
Crow matched that smile as he gave a firm squeeze to the hand still about his waist, not realising the significance of those words.
"It's something special alright," he replied, peeling off from the main highway and onto a nearby exit ramp, heading directly for the heart of the city itself. "I still prefer the nights, but that's just the Satellite boy in me talking," he added with a laugh. He raised an open hand to the sky, caught in his own memory for a moment. "That far out from Neo Domino, you can see the stars shining so brightly during the night; our own private light show. I mean, there's a good reason we chose to live so far from the city itself nowadays. Even Jack missed the view; though he'd never admit to anything."
His delighted words brought the gentle laugh from the pharaoh, knowing exactly what he meant. All those weeks ago, as they sat at the fountain in the plaza... the stars twinkled as bright as the moon, and they all shared it together without a care in the world.
It was also the same night... Atem's thoughts drifted further past thoughts of the clear night sky, settling firmly upon a darkened room, gently whispered admissions, fingers gliding across skin, and he ignored the way his memories brought the soft heat to his cheeks, swallowing lightly.
He really did lose so much... only to gain something so special...
Crimson eyes slid shut once more, and he laid his head against Crow's back, keeping a firm hold upon the riding duellist.
"...thank you... truly..." he breathed into the wind, barely caught by the other.
Crow almost missed the faint snatch of words at his ears, and he blinked lightly, allowing the warm smile to settle upon his lips. It would take far more than simple time needed to heal those wounds, but it was already a step forward.
One step at a time, Crow's mind whispered.
***
Atem sat quietly in the examination room, arm held out as the nurse looked over the simple brace about his skin. His fingers brushed smoothly over the fabric-like material and he made a positive sound, drawing back to reach for a small pen shaped apparatus on the desk.
“Looks like you've been keeping it clean and dry, which is always a good start,” the nurse told him. He placed the device to the inside of Atem's elbow, keeping it steady. “Just rotate your wrist one-eighty degrees a few times, nice and slow.”
As the pharaoh did so, there sounded a few small blips from the little device, a green light appearing at the tip as the nurse drew away. He reached for one of the bands near his elbow, tapping the device to it and allowing it to detach from him skin, like a shackle falling from his wrists. Atem blinked as that strange cloth-like material between them began retracting back into the one at his wrist; the nurse going about the simple procedure to remove that one as well.
“Alright, good as new,” he told him happily. “The doctor's got your report already-” he waggled the little pen, “-but if there's any issues, we'll be in touch. Other than that, you might want to give your arm a gentle, but thorough, scrub when you get home, and hold off on the strenuous stuff for another couple of weeks.”
He glanced down at the deck on Atem's hip.
“And uh, no riding duels for a while, okay?”
Atem gave a soft laugh at that, holding up his other hand in protest.
“Don't worry, I think I'll give up my license for a while,” he replied, standing up and brushing fingers over newly exposed skin. It felt strange, even after a mere couple of weeks. “Thank you, for all your help.”
The nurse got to his feet, heading for the door. “Not at all; it's my job to help people get back on track after something like this.”
The simple way he spoke struck the pharaoh, and he blinked down at his arm from where it rested in his hand. To anyone, it was a truly insignificant line, but to him, it seemed to be what felt like a string of little things lining up for him. He allowed the soft smile to reach his lips and he turned his eyes back up to the man.
“Well then, you've got one very satisfied patient,” he told him. The nurse gave a soft laugh at that.
“Good to know, have a good rest of the day then,” came the cheerful goodbye as Atem gave him a light wave, heading back into the sparsely decorated hallway.
Crow looked up from where he sat perched on a chair, idly flipping a magazine in his fingers. At the sight of Atem, he flicked it back onto the pile and strode up to him.
“Hey, how'd it go?”
Atem gave a brief nod. “All better. As long as I take it easy and look both ways when crossing the road, I don't think I'll be back for a while,” he smiled wryly at him. Crow couldn't help the snicker that fell from his lips and he threw an arm about Atem's shoulders, walking them both out towards the carpark.
“Well that's a relief! You seriously want to avoid this place as long as you can; it's bad for your health,” the redhead told him as they stepped into the twilight air. Crow stepped away from the pharaoh to stretch his arms up high, feeling joints pop lightly from sitting so long. “Mm... a long ride home is just what I need after all that waiting.”
Atem glanced away briefly, giving a soft chuckle. “Ah, sorry about that...”
“What?” Crow blinked back at him. “Pfft, I'm the one who offered, alright? Don't get so hung up on it.”
The riding duellist kept pace with his companion as they made their way to Blackbird, reaching for a helmet and slipping it over his head. He tossed the other lightly to the pharaoh, who caught it easily, and they both sat down in the limited space. Yusei hadn't been exaggerating when he mentioned that Jack or Crow's D-Wheels wouldn't have much room to accommodate two passengers; he could hardly imagine what it would be like trying to squeeze in behind Jack's tall frame.
Though the stray thought did bring the crease to his brow as Blackbird roared to life beneath them. Even if they didn't have the means, this group of friends always seemed to offer anything without a flicker of hesitation.
It was like a welcoming family who hadn't seen him for years, opening their doors and ushering him in out of the cold. Except in his case, it was rescuing him from the hospital and solving the veritable mystery surrounding his very existence in this world.
Crimson eyes narrowed lightly as Crow steered them out into traffic once more, the wind brushing past his skin.
He had the answers to his little mystery.
Now all that was left was telling the others.
***
“It's going to be perfect!” Bruno exclaimed excitedly as he scanned the diagnostics on the screen before him. “Maintaining the dissipation of energy as a scattered particle release will take the strain off the housing entirely, which means we can focus more on the increase of pressure within the generator itself.”
He couldn't help the bright laugh that slipped from him as he clapped a hand to Yusei's shoulder. The riding duellist returned the smile with one of his own, giving a brief nod to his friend.
“Exactly. You've done an amazing job with this idea, Bruno,” he told him, turning blue eyes over to the code on the screen. He reached up to scroll through it, his gaze drinking in the rapid blur of text as it zipped by. “I'm not seeing any potential issues from the outset... and it already sounds like our best chance at completing this new engine in time.”
Bruno beamed at that, giving his shoulder another happy clap.
“See? I told you it would work out in the end!” He pushed himself away from the desk, walking over to an adjacent workbench to the D-Wheels, placing his hands flat against the surface, already running the schematics through his head. “Though we'll still be down to the wire to push out both a test type and production type if we want to refit all of them...” Yusei gave a faint noise of thought as he stood, walking to his own D-Wheel.
“Perhaps, but at least it'll keep us as busy as Crow,” he replied, already tugging at the chassis release, drawing the laugh from his companion.
“You're not wrong there; I don't think he knows how to turn down a job,” Bruno said, already reaching for a blank blueprint and plucking a pencil from his jacket. “Alright, let me get started on this design, and I think we should be able to start collecting materials for a build in a few hours.”
Yusei nodded, kneeling down next to his machine as he began reaching through the wires and components, going through the motions of carefully disconnecting and rerouting things where needed for the upcoming barrage of tests it was about to receive.
He placed the tip of gloved fingers in his mouth, tugging the offending fabric from both hands, pushing his sleeves up and slipping fingers deep within the thick trunk of wires that lay before him. Some things were far easier to do by touch, and he already knew his machine intimately, so it was little effort to snake his hand into well up to his forearm, find the appropriate connections and tweak them out as needed.
Time slipped past his senses, and he soon found himself lost to the methodical task of withdrawing components and spilling thick coils of wire onto the ground, looking for all the world like tree roots bursting from the machine.
His ears pricked at the sound of an approaching D-Wheel, and he glanced over his shoulder to see Blackbird turning into the open warehouse door. It was only as he spotted Crow's passenger that he blinked in surprise, withdrawing his hands and standing up.
Crow drew to a stop and tugged his helmet off with a satisfied sound, shaking his wild hair loose. “Good thing I know this place like the back of my hand, or the rest of that traffic would've been a nightmare,” he laughed brightly. Atem mirrored the sound as he placed his own helmet on Blackbird's seat, the soft laugh causing Yusei to draw a faint breath.
“I think you had it covered,” the pharaoh told him. “Having a bike in heavy traffic is an old move. It's probably been around longer than I have,” he added with a wink, drawing the laugh from Crow once more.
Yusei couldn't help the warm smile that blossomed across his lips. Seeing Atem looking brighter than he had for some time now, joking and even laughing with someone else... it warmed his heart immensely. He knew his journey was far from over, but if he'd actively taken the first few steps to heal-
“Yusei,” Atem's voice cut into his thoughts and blue eyes blinked back at the young man. The pharaoh realised he'd interrupted whatever it was going on upstairs, and he raised his arm, proudly showing off the lack of a cast. “Look, all better.”
The riding duellist gave a mute nod at the action, knowing it must seem rather awkward that he was doing little else but stare at the young man. He walked towards him, stopping before him as words seemed to evaporate on his tongue. Opening his hand, he held it out to the young man.
“May I?” he asked, and Atem placed his wrist in that waiting hand. Yusei couldn't help but be relieved beyond compare at how much change Atem had undergone in the last couple of days. What kind of decision had he reached to draw such a response from him? He swallowed lightly as his fingers sat upon warm skin. Whatever was on his mind, whatever had settled in his heart, he was so, so glad for it.
“See?” Atem's voice whispered as he reached up, placing his own hand atop Yusei's, secrecy not even on his mind. “All it needed was a little time...”
Yusei's fingers gave a gentle squeeze as the soft laugh fell from him, slipping back from that warm touch.
“Good to hear it...” he breathed, wanting nothing more than to draw him tight in his arms and hold on.
“Ah, that means an extra pair of hands to help out!” Bruno exclaimed happily, drawing everyone's gaze as he kept his eyes firmly upon his blueprints, pencil still making short, quick marks on the paper. “We're going to need as much help as we can to get this engine done in time.”
Atem let the soft chuckle slip from him. “Of course,” he replied smoothly. “Though I do still need to take it easy. No... strenuous activities. Doctor's orders.”
Dark blue eyes widened, and Yusei couldn't help but glance back at him, taking full note of that faint smirk sitting ripe upon lips. Oh he wouldn't...
No. No, he really would.
“Don't worry,” he told the pharaoh, facing him fully. “I'm sure we can find some light duties for you. You're still quite capable with your hands, right?”
Crimson eyes blinked back at him, feeling the flush of heat under his skin at the words as he glanced away. Of course Yusei wouldn't be easily dissuaded by such a simple bait. He parted his lips to reply when Crow cleared his throat loudly, drawing their attention.
“It's been a long day so if you don't mind, I'm going to hit the first shower before Jack steals all the hot water,” he told them sharply, grey eyes widening slightly in fierce, unspoken warning to the pair.
Yusei gave a brief nod, his brain furiously hitting rewind as their shared words began to hit him one after the other. True, Bruno might've been oblivious with his head buried in schematics, but he sure wasn't blind, and continuing like they were was likely to get themselves burned. He ducked his gaze away briefly, mentally tucking himself back into shape and gave Crow a brief smile.
“Ah, sure thing. We'll get finished up here and get started on dinner,” he assured his friend.
“Alright, just remember it's only for five tonight; Aki and the twins won't be joining us until the weekend,” came the stern reply as he began to head up the stairs. That drew Atem's attention, and he brought a hand to his mouth in thought. That meant he had to wait a couple more nights for everyone to be together.
He gave a brief nod to his own thoughts; so be it. If he had to wait a little longer to tell everyone, then he would do just that. He couldn't see the point in sharing his story to the occupants of Poppo Time, only to have nearly half the team miss out on the very same information. That certainly wouldn't be very fair at all.
“What's the matter?”
Yusei's perceptive gaze stared back at him as Atem lifted his head. Of course he wouldn't miss a thing...
“Just thinking to myself,” Atem replied softly. “I... want to tell everyone, but the timing...” he trailed off for a moment, shaking his head lightly. “I'd rather wait for everyone to be together.”
The riding duellist didn't have to guess what was meant by those words, and he offered a soft smile to the pharaoh, reaching up to place a hand on his shoulder.
“It's alright. I think everyone would rather you take as much time as you needed,” he told him gently, fingers giving a faint squeeze. “I'm just glad you've got your smile back again.” Atem couldn't help but feel the warmth settle deep in his chest at those quietly whispered words, ducking his gaze away briefly.
“Thank you... truly.”
Fingers gave another gentle squeeze to his shoulder before slipping away. “We should really keep our promise to Crow. You head up and get started; I'll be there once I've finished here,” Yusei continued, the amused smile sitting on his lips. “It's best not to get on the bad side of the person who helps keep everyone fed.”
Atem couldn't help but snigger at that, holding up a hand in acquiesce. “Alright, that's a very good point,” he replied, already walking past him and heading for the stairs. “Bruno, we'll call you when it's ready.”
The mechanic, not moving his eyes from the schematics before him, raised a hand in a half-hearted wave of acknowledgement, caught somewhere between mathematical problems in his mind. The pharaoh, already smiling and shaking his head, knew it would be  pointless to try and garner any further attention from the man, and he headed up the stairs.
Whilst he may not have had the skills of one Crow Hogan, he certainly knew his way around the kitchen. Yugi himself was instrumental in his acquired knowledge, and he reached down for where he knew the larger pots were kept, placing a couple upon the stovetop. Perhaps something that would use up the rest of the vegetables altogether... a stir fry? No, they had something similar last week.
He gave a sudden snap of his fingers as inspiration struck. Goulash would be perfect, especially with the nights starting to cool off a little. Something hot, hearty and filling would be just what everyone needed. And it would last them all for quite a few meals. With a quiet hum, he started reaching through cupboards, collecting what spices, sauces and ingredients he needed and placing them within easy reach.
Recreating the recipe from memory wasn't all that hard, he thought, and luckily Crow kept most of the basics here, ready to use. He reached for a knife, and one after another, began dicing through the vegetables and meat needed for dinner, placing each one in their own bowl. It was quiet, methodical work, and it gave him a simple moment to himself, using skilled hands to make short work of the ingredients.
It was only as warm arms suddenly encircled him from behind that he startled lightly, staring over his shoulder as Yusei's cheek came into view, that bright splash of yellow marker tracing his skin. He relaxed in a heartbeat, fingers reaching up to rest gently on his arm, enjoying the quiet moment of contact; how warm and content it made him feel, as if his very presence could still the turmoil in his heart.
Crimson eyes closed briefly as he lay his knife down, letting his head rest against the cheek of the other, as all dinner plans were suddenly put on hold in that simple respite.
“I've been thinking about this all day...” Yusei's words breathed across his ear.
Atem couldn't help but smile at him. “If you were that hungry, you should have said something earlier...”
The soft chuckle tumbled from Yusei like a waterfall, and he squeezed his gently.
“Maybe I wanted something else from the menu,” came the quiet tease of voice. Now it was Atem's turn to smirk.
“Pity for you the kitchen's been closed for repairs.”
That got the desired reaction, and Yusei had to turn his head away as the sharp laugh tore from him, short and bright; a tone that Atem hadn't really heard before, and he couldn't help but let his own smile split across his lips. He felt those arms give a brief squeeze to his frame before slipping away, leaving hands to linger at his shoulders.
“Don't worry; I know a good mechanic,” Yusei told him softly. “Now, what are we making?” Atem stared back down at his handiwork, everything sorted and ready to start cooking.
“Something that Yugi's mother showed me how to make,” he replied quietly. “Though I suppose in hindsight, it was more her showing him how to make it,” he added.
Yusei cast his gaze over everything, taking note of the extra spices and sauces off to the side with a nod. “It looks basic enough,” came the soft reply. It was also the first time in... a very long time that he'd heard Atem mention anything about his home.
“It is, but I'm sure you and the others will appreciate it.” The pharaoh reached for the large frypan, settling it onto the burner and flicking it on, taking a step to the side. “Tell you what... you stand here, and we'll make it together.”
The smile never left Yusei's lips as he watched him for a moment. He really was trying so hard to pick himself up and continue on. Even if it was only for this one day, he had pushed himself forward with all his strength and was allowing himself to heal, little by little.
He took the handle of the frypan within his fingers, reaching for a little cooking oil as Atem told him to, and he began the step-by-step process of cooking up the different ingredients. Time wound on as Yusei listened to the simple instructions dictated to him, and together they began to prepare something that smelled utterly wonderful, filling Poppo Time with a rich warmth.
All Atem was attempting to do was try, and that was all Yusei could hope for.
He would do everything in his power to make sure he healed with a smile on his face.

Zero-Waste Challenge: Maximizing Food Freshness and Minimizing Trash with Asahi Kasei Products
Tumblr media
The Imperative of Food Preservation
Wasted food is not just a loss of valuable resources but also a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions as decomposing food in landfills releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The problem often stems from improper storage, leading to quick spoilage. Ensuring freshness not only stretches the shelf life of our groceries but also plays a pivotal role in addressing the larger environmental crisis.
Preserving Freshness with Asahi Kasei Premium Wrap
In the quest for freshness, Asahi Kasei’s Premium Wrap emerges as an essential kitchen companion. Crafted from PVDC material, it serves as a barricade against oxygen and moisture, the two primary culprits of food degradation. Such a feature ensures that everything from your leafy greens to your savory dishes retains its zest and nutrition for extended periods. Moreover, its adaptability to different storage environments — be it the cold recesses of a fridge, the icy depths of a freezer, or just the ambient room temperature — speaks volumes about its versatility. And for those who often turn to microwaves for reheating, the Premium Wrap’s ability to endure temperatures up to 140°C becomes a significant advantage. By prolonging the life of food items, we not only enjoy fresher meals but also contribute to reducing food waste.
Bake without the Waste: Asahi Kasei Cooking Sheet
Every baker, professional or novice, understands the aftermath of a baking session: residue-laden trays, wasteful disposable liners, and the unavoidable cleaning ordeal. The Asahi Kasei Cooking Sheet is a game-changer in this space. Its dual-sided silicone coating ensures that foods don’t stick, reducing the need for single-use liners or excessive greasing. Moreover, its ability to be reused for the same dish multiple times makes it a standout product in the zero-waste challenge. Thus, as you whisk, roll, and bake, this parchment paper ensures that your environmental impact is minimal.
Cutting Down Oil and Waste: Asahi Kasei Frying Pan Foil
The love for fried foods is almost universal, but the guilt accompanying the oil use and subsequent cleaning can be a dampener. Asahi Kasei’s Frying Pan Foil offers a respite. With a unique silicone-coated side, this aluminium foil allows for virtually oil-free cooking. Dishes that traditionally swim in oil can now be enjoyed with a fraction of it, all while ensuring that the pan remains pristine. This not only ensures health benefits in terms of reduced caloric intake but also means fewer cleaning agents are required to maintain your cookware. The minimized use of disposable foils further strengthens its position as a zero-waste champion.
Eco-Friendly Storage Solutions: Asahi Kasei Zipper Bags
Beyond cooking and baking, storage is a critical component of any kitchen. Asahi Kasei’s Zipper Bags are crafted to address the twin challenges of ensuring food freshness and environmental responsibility. Their Two Lines Zipper technology guarantees an airtight seal, prolonging the freshness of the stored contents. Manufactured from BPA-free and food-grade LPDE material, these zipper pouches prioritize food safety. Their recyclability is a testament to Asahi Kasei’s commitment to a sustainable future, ensuring that while your food stays fresh, the planet stays a little cleaner.
Broader Environmental Impact of Zero-Waste Choices
Choosing sustainable products like those from Asahi Kasei extends the positive impact far beyond your kitchen. When you opt for products that reduce food waste and minimize disposable packaging, you contribute to a broader environmental movement. The ripple effect of such choices is profound. Reduced food waste means fewer resources are wasted in food production, transportation, and disposal. It also results in decreased emissions from the decomposition of organic waste in landfills, helping combat climate change. By using sustainable products, you play a part in reducing the overall carbon footprint of the food industry.
In a world where the consequences of our choices are becoming increasingly evident, the zero-waste challenge is not just a personal endeavor; it’s a collective responsibility. Asahi Kasei’s range of innovative kitchen solutions offers a practical and effective way to embark on this journey. By using products like the Premium Wrap, Cooking Sheet, Frying Pan Foil, and Zipper Bags, you not only enjoy the benefits of fresher food, longer-lasting cookware, and reduced oil usage but also actively contribute to a cleaner planet.

When to change a pan (and other kitchen utensils)
Kitchen utensils are not eternal nor is there an ideal material. We tell you when and why you have to renew the pans, the tapers and the cutting boards
Pans, containers, cutting boards... Kitchen utensils are not eternal and there is no ideal material to put in contact with food (although some have more advantages than others). Its deterioration can occur for various reasons: improper use, such as when we use metal cutlery on non-stick pans; incidents or carelessness, such as when we leave a Tupperware in the microwave for too long; or simply wear and tear, as occurs for example with a cutting board. In this article, we explain what are the signs that they need to be renewed and why we should do it.
Tumblr media
Cookware has a limited shelf life
The deterioration of the utensils sometimes manifests itself clearly, limiting its functionality, as occurs in those “non-stick” pans where the food sticks. At this point, we usually renew them to avoid the inconvenience they cause. But we are more reluctant to do so when these deteriorated utensils continue to fulfill their culinary function, as is the case with a scratched Tupperware container. It is understandable. Nobody likes to throw away an object that is still useful because it entails an economic and environmental cost, in addition to the effort required to find and buy a new one.
But we must be aware that many of these utensils have a limited useful life, so it is advisable to check them periodically to remove those that are damaged. That doesn't mean we have to throw them away. In many cases, we can give them a second use. For example, we can use that striped Tupperware to store paintings or sewing items.
Why should we renew a frying pan, a cutting board, or a container?
The recommendation to renew deteriorated kitchen utensils is made mainly for two reasons:
1. Prevent food from being altered in its composition and its characteristics, such as its smell or taste. For example, plastics "age" with use and over time, releasing part of the compounds that form them and giving food those characteristic "plastic" smells.
2. Avoid health risks. In this sense, the most important risk is of biological origin. For example, the indentations of a scratched Tupperware container are very difficult to clean, so moisture or small remains of food may remain inside them, favoring the development of microorganisms, some of which could be pathogenic.
The latter tends to go unnoticed because in general our fears do not focus on microbiological risks but chemical ones. What scares us are the compounds that are part of the utensils, especially if they are made of plastic or other similar materials. However, we should not be so afraid of this because all materials manufactured to come into contact with food have been previously tested for safety, from the adhesives used on fruit labels to the cork used in the wine bottles.
The field of frying pans is a whole world. They are made of different materials, such as cast iron, stainless steel, or Teflon and each of them has specific characteristics that we must assess based on our needs.
The iron ones reach a very high temperature, which is maintained while we use them, so they are a good option for cooking some foods, such as meat. In addition, they are very durable. But not everything is advantages. They are very heavy, not very sticky, and relatively expensive.
One of the things we value most is that food does not stick, so we usually opt for Teflon pans. Although, on the other hand, there are many rumors about this material, so there are people who mistrust and choose other options such as ceramics. However, the latter is not as non-stick and transmits heat worse.
Teflon is not a bad option if our priority is the non-stick of the pan. Actually "Teflon" is a trademark. The name of the material is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and, despite the suspicions it arouses among a part of the population, it is not carcinogenic, but safe. It is commonly used in pacemakers and medical implants because it is an inert material, as well as flexible and non-stick.
In general, the rumors surrounding pans of this type do not refer to Teflon (PTFE), but another, called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which has traditionally been used to bond said Teflon (PTFE) to the body of the pan. frying pan. It is a potentially toxic material but, being below the surface of the pan, there is no risk. And in case the pan is scratched, that risk is not a concern. In any case, in just a few weeks that material will no longer be allowed for that purpose, so many of the companies that make pans stopped using it a long time ago.
When should we change our pan?
When the surface shows damage. If it is scratched, food will stick to it and it will be difficult to clean, which can encourage the growth of pathogens. Teflon detachments are not too worrying in themselves because it is inert material that is not digested, although it is not recommended to go to that extreme.
It is also recommended to change the pan when its integrity is affected. The most common thing is that the bottom ends up bulging, especially in poor quality pans and that we are subject to sudden changes in temperature. The bulge is not only a nuisance when cooking due to the instability of the pan, but it can also be dangerous due to the risk of burns. In addition, since the heat is not well distributed throughout the surface, the food near the edges may be underdone and this may increase the risk of food poisoning.

Cutting boards: wood or plastic?
There has long been an intense debate about the most suitable material for cutting boards. In the world of food safety, wood has always been frowned upon due to its drawbacks:
One of them is that it can release splinters that end up in the food, with the risk that this poses to health since they could cause injuries to the intestinal tract.
Another drawback is that if the wood is not suitable (too soft or too porous) or the board is not well built (if it is not in one piece or there are spaces between the joints), food residues or moisture can remain and favor the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.
On the other hand, some studies indicate that a suitable wood could be suitable for use with food. For that, it must meet some requirements, such as being hard to prevent scratches from forming when cutting, being slightly porous, and is well constructed (being in one piece or with the pieces well assembled) to prevent the growth of microorganisms. In this sense, for example, bamboo and maple wood are recommended.
In any case, wood requires more care and, above all, it is more difficult to clean and disinfect than plastic, which can generally be washed without any problem in the dishwasher. Also, when the board is made of plastic, we can choose different colors for each use, for example, red for meat and green for vegetables. It seems frivolous, but it's a good way to avoid cross-contamination. On the other hand, plastic boards have the drawback that they are more easily damaged when cutting than hardwood. Boards of other materials exist, such as glass, but they are too hard and easily damage the sharpness of knives.
In short, it would be a good idea to use two different boards, one made of plastic, easy to clean and disinfect, to cut meat and fish, and the other made of hardwood, not very porous and in one piece, to cut bread and food of vegetable origin (without neglecting its cleaning and maintenance because these foods can also be contaminated with pathogens).
When should we change our cutting board?
When its surface is damaged (it has numerous deep grooves that are difficult to clean) or its integrity has been affected (for example, if it is warped or cracked).
Plastic containers, are they safe?
The most used material in the manufacture of lunchboxes or lunch boxes is plastic. But not all plastics are the same. This type of packaging shows a triangular symbol with a number in the center that is between 1 and 7, depending on the type of material. For example, 1 corresponds to polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in water or juice bottles, while 5 is assigned to polypropylene, which is the material commonly used in lunch containers.
It should be noted that despite the misgivings they arouse in many people, these containers are safe. In addition, they have numerous advantages: they are cheap, light, resistant, suitable for heating in the microwave and washing in the dishwasher, as well as for refrigerating or freezing food. But they also have drawbacks. Being porous, they are very difficult to clean and even traces of odors or pigments may remain. They can be scratched if we use metal cutlery or rub with scouring pads and, in addition, they can be deformed if we subject them to high temperatures.
Tumblr media
There are also containers made of other materials, each with its advantages and disadvantages:
Glass. It's microwave safe, cleans up well, and is fairly inert, so it doesn't impart off-flavors or off-odors to the food. Also, it is durable if handled properly. Among its drawbacks: it is fragile, heavy, and, being transparent, there is a greater risk of food becoming rancid (if exposed to light).
Metal. Stainless steel containers do not give off odors or flavors, as it is a fairly inert material. They are very resistant and wash very easily. Their main drawback is that they cannot be used for microwave heating, in addition to the fact that they are heavy (although lighter than glass).
Silicone. Silicone containers are very light, hardly give off odors or flavors to food and resist high temperatures (up to 240 ºC). Among its drawbacks: not very consistent and difficult to clean.
When should we change the tapered?
When they present damage, such as scratches, cracks, or deformations, or when traces of aromas or pigments persist. Also when they give off bad odors or transmit abnormal aromas or flavors to food.
In short, there is no ideal material. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages that we must assess according to our needs. Of course, some materials have more advantages than others. For example, in general, wood is not recommended. If we had to choose one, the most recommended would be stainless steel: it is resistant, hygienic, inert, and easy to clean and disinfect.
