Random PokeMas VA Opinions

I feel like with the English dubbed version of Pokemon Masters, the casting frequently strikes gold and gives characters voices that are perfect fits for them, to the point where the majority of them are the definitive voices for the characters. Despite this, the voice directing is pretty inconsistent in quality, and there are some glaring missed opportunities in terms of VAs that Bang Zoom was able to get for this game VS which characters they ended up having them voice.

Could’ve Cast Better:

MISTY - Reba Buhr gives Misty a very good voice where she’s clearly channeling Rachel Lillis as best as she’s able to. However, Brianna Knickerbocker was in the initial cast as Roxie (who she does a passable job as) and as Viola (who she does horribly as). We’ve recently seen in her role as Pirika in the new Shaman King anime dub that Brianna can totally nail the Rachel Lillis voice, so had she been cast as Misty, she would’ve done her part flawlessly.

AGATHA - Dorothy Elias Fahn is alright as Agatha, but I can tell that she’s putting on a voice and it does not sound as natural as how Ellyn Stern voiced the role in Pokemon Generations. Was there really no voice actress who could do a better old lady voice available?

FLANNERY - Laura Post does....fine. Just fine. But it’s in the shadow of Lisa Ortiz from the 4Kids PokeAni dub; in a dub that overused her a lot, Flannery was one of the top roles that Ortiz was best suited to voicing. I wish Bang Zoom had cast someone who could do a similar take, like Carrie Savage or Sandy Fox if possible.

DAWN - Kimberly Anne Williams was clearly directed to channel Emily Bauer’s Dawn from PokeAni, and while she does it alright, her natural lisp is impossible to not hear on many lines. Bang Zoom ought to have cast Selah Victor in this role, since she’s got a vocal range that sounds more naturally fit for an Emily Bauer soundalike.

BARRY - Erik Scott Kimerer does an impressively good Barry, much better than I’d expect out of him and pretty close to the iconic Jamie McGonnigal performance in the PokeAni dub. But it’s just...you have Zach Aguilar here voicing Calem and c’mon, have you heard him as Nikkaidou in March Comes In Like A Lion when he’s going all out? He could’ve just as easily been a perfect Barry with that quality.

MARSHAL - If Philip Reich wasn’t up to doing a gruffer and deeper voice for this character, than they needed to choose another VA option. Whoever’s voicing the Blackbelt trainer would’ve fit better!

LANA - Amanda Lee is an okay Lana, but I feel too many of the line reads they went with were misdirected as she starts to sound a bit too much like Misty and not nearly as good as Rosie Reyes’ Lana from the PokeAni dub. Could we maybe have traded Ama Lee out for Mela Lee? Mela would’ve been able to deliver a more fitting take.

OLIVIA - Wasn’t there any voice actress who could not make Olivia sound like an older woman than she’s supposed to be?

HAU - The one indisputable miscast in the entire game. Both of Hau’s PokeAni VAs and his Japanese VA in Masters are male, yet Laura Stahl voices him in the dub? There had to have been a male VA who could’ve fit Hau. A voice actress had no business being cast.

RAIHAN - Mike Dent just...isn’t it as Raihan. Someone like Vargus Mason, Zeno Robinson, or even Imari Williams would’ve done better.

GIOVANNI - I love Andrew Russell’s Giovanni, it seriously rivals Jamieson Price’s from Pokemon Origins as my second favorite Giovanni voice (none can top Ted Lewis.) But seriously, he sounds so much like he’s doing a Keith Silverstein impersonation, to the point where I assumed it WAS Keith voicing Giovanni at first and still can’t help but wonder if the role had been intended for Keith but they couldn’t get him back so they had Andrew directed to sound like him instead. The actual Keith Silverstein voicing Giovanni would’ve been such ideal casting, but hey, I’ll take the next best thing that we got.

ARCHIE - Adin Rudd gives Archie a voice and an energy that’s about what you’d expect to hear out of Archie, so he was a good casting choice. The one that would’ve been even better? Richard Epcar. But they cast him as Sawyer from the offset, so casting him in a role where he’d inevitably use a similar sounding voice was off the table.

MAXIE - Jarred Kjack is also a good fit for Maxie and it makes sense they’d cast an actual nerd to give him some authenticity. But just listen to Sean Chiplock here (at 1:07) - his Maxie is pitch perfect.

GUZMA - While Doug Erholtz was an inspired choice for Guzma and gives him a voice that fits well with the design and characterization, it bums me out that Bang Zoom couldn’t get Sam Riegal to voice this role in the Fuiro Tigre voice he did for the Ace Attorney anime dub, as that would’ve been THE perfect match. And if not Sam, then Austin Lee Matthews could’ve also done just as well (see 3:45 here).

LUSAMINE - Michelle Ruff is an adequate pick, but not only is it strange that Plumeria’s VA is also Lusamine’s, but...Bang Zoom had Laura Post there as both Flannery and Cheryl from the offset and didn’t think to ask her back to voice this role? To me, that’s a tragedy.

Could’ve Been Directed Better:

LEAF - Michelle Marie’s voice is a very nice fit for Leaf, but she wasn’t directed to play the role in a way that made her distinct. I think she needed to take more after how Kate Bristol voiced her in Smash.

LT. SURGE - The doofy, macho Patrick Warburton type voice works fine, but you’d think they would’ve had Patrick Seitz give a gruffer, more militant type of performance like Gamagori or Keith Shadis.

LORELEI - Lauren Landa’s problem is the opposite of the “Prima” voice from the 4Kids dub - she’s not cold enough and puts too much feeling into her lines! She should’ve tried for closer to how Erika Lindbeck voiced the role in Pokemon Generations.

MORTY - I love Brian Hanford’s world-weary, dead inside voice he gives Morty, befitting a Ghost type Gym Leader. Shame his line reads are so flat. Did the director make him take “lifeless” too literally?

DRAKE - He’s a sailor, not a pirate! Steve Kramer could’ve done it!

STEVEN - Did the voice director tell Xander Mobus that Steven ought to sound like a smarmy douchebag rich boy? ‘Cause that’s how Xander’s delivery makes him come off and it’s super frustrating!

BIANCA - Erika Harlacher needed less Eileen Stevens and more Erica Schroeder. Otherwise she does very well, but something’s off.

BURGH - Brandon McInnis is a really good fit for Burgh, but good lord did he go way overboard on the flamboyance to the point of sounding Camp Gay, which isn’t really reflected in Burgh’s character.

BRYCEN - The guy looks like a masked superhero and he’s an actor in Poke’ Star Studios, but this does not justify the cheesy tone that the voice director had Christopher Bevins take when voicing the role.

MARSHAL - He sounds like he’s trying to go for John Burgmeier’s Tien but what came out instead was Chris Cason’s Tien!

ROXIE / VIOLA - Brianna Knickerbocker sounded too try-hard in both roles. As Roxie, she overdoes the stereotypical punk rocker quality when a more natural take would’ve sufficed, and what the hell was anyone thinking with Viola? Just because Viola’s a Kalos Gym Leader doesn’t mean she needs a French accent, especially since no other Kalosian character has one and we have both Professor Bellis AND Fantina talking with one in this same game!

PROFESSOR SYCAMORE - I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is about this performance that bothers me, but Ben Lepley could’ve done better at making Sycamore sound more dapper and gentlemanly.

OLIVIA - If Julia McIlvaine was to voice her, then the voice director should’ve told her to make the voice less deep and more youthful.

LANA - Again, if Ama Lee was to be cast in the role, she should’ve dialed back the pep and sounded less Misty-esque.

NESSA - I prefer Tiana Camacho as Ness than as Bea, but why did the voice direction have her talking just above a whisper for so many of her lines? She’s going to make people get all the wrong ideas!

ARCHIE - Adin Rudd underplayed his line delivery a bit too much.

MAXIE - Jarred Kjack overplayed his line delviery WAY too much!

LUSAMINE - Just like Sayaka Ohara as this role in the Japanese version, voice direction let Michelle Ruff down. She’s capable of making her voice a touch deeper and giving more passionate line reads, but she just phoned it in for a good part of her performance.
