highlights from the virtual signing joe did back before his book tour, cause i havent seen anyone talk about it yet:
ppl who participated in the signing got to do a sweepstakes for a merch package and when the spokesperson was showing it off joe was like "and it's got a LOCKPICK and a GARROTE and a BALACLAVA so just DO WHATEVER DAMAGE YOU LIKE"
he introduced black flag, his favorite band, to his daughter and she thought it sounded terrible lkdfjldjfkd
when fob went to induct green day at the hall of fame joe mentions smoking weed with joan jett and miley cyrus. icon.
he regrets not having better tools to deal with his anxiety about touring and worrying about how every time he got in the van he'd be leaving home. "...and i wish i had, instead of looking out the back window, looked toward the front of the van and realized i was with four or five of my best friends and that i was in safe company."
re: the rest of the band, "they are like brothers, at the end of the day. it's a brotherly relationship."
his 8 year old begs him to watch horror movies and r-rated movies with him and he tells her she can watch them when she's 30
"let's talk about music. nothing better than talking about music. don't listen to it. just talk about it."
when asked about his proudest accomplishment: "i love all my children equally. but here's the reality. i am SO proud of fall out boy because it's a gigantic band that i started as a teenager. we just did stadium shows supporting GREEN DAY."
he's also super proud of the damned things and how honored he was that scott ian from anthrax, one of his personal heroes, trusted him to do so much writing
the interviewer goes, "all right here's a softball" and joe goes, "SOFT ME. uh, what?"
his favorite guitar is his 1965 reverse-body gibson firebird
his favorite transformer is grimlock
this question was supposed to be a lightning round but when asked "nintendo or sega" he says nintendo and then spends about 3 minutes talking abt punchout and then rattling off obscure sonic trivia. i love him.
his favorite video game is final fantasy 7. he says he "nearly flunked" out of middle school because of it.
he has a hard time picking a favorite horror movie since he loves horror but he picks "texas chainsaw massacre" as the one that affected him the most. he also recommends "anything for jackson" because it will "give you nightmares, if you are interested in having nightmares"
his favorite star wars character is yoda because his wisdom applies to real life very frequently
a fan-submitted question talked about with knives and how much the fan liked his vocals and both the interviewer and joe smiled REALLY big!!!!
sadly he doesn't like singing that much cause he doesn't like his voice. also he says fall out boy has a really good singer already. but he won't rule out doing some solo venture and recording super distorted vocals someday
re: what he wants to be remembered for the most - "having a sick bod, man."
"no, genuinely, i want my children to remember me as a good father. that's like the truth. and for having a sick bod."
he really doesn't hold any grudges about the hazing he got in the early days of touring because it was an initiation ritual and it weathered him quickly to touring life. he doesn't think people could get away with it now though.
"if you're gonna punch somebody though, do it when they're not looking"
re: favorite song to play live - "i don't care" because it "Just Rocks." and it's really fun!
his bluetooth in his car started playing "of all the gin joints in the world" and he texted patrick about how good of a song it was and how it'd be nice to play it live again
"as the kids maybe used to say, it SLAPS." brief discussion regarding the difference between a bop and a slap.
currently most of his musical ambitions lie in whatever fall out boy will do next
he tried scoring and composing for commercials and the like and he found that he really does not like it that much
he apologizes for not getting a haircut before the livestream. "this is just how i am, sloppy and unpresentable." (note: he was doing this livestream after a 13-hour flight from rock in rio in brazil)

Czech Republic continues to negotiate possible purchase of F-35 fighters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/19/2023 - 08:25 in Military
From April 3 to 6, 2023, under the leadership of Blanka Cupáková, senior director of the economic section of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic, new negotiations on the conditions for the possible acquisition of 24 F-35 aircraft took place in the United States.
The negotiations covered all aspects of the potential acquisition and took place both in Washington, where the interested government agencies (including DSCA and JPO) are based, and at Lockheed Martin's headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
In the first part of the work trip, representatives of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the Czech Republic discussed with representatives of the company Lockheed Martin the proposals for industrial cooperation projects that the manufacturer presented to the Czech Republic based on several months of intense negotiations.
Lockheed Martin appreciates the quality of the Czech industry and, in some cases, its unique production capabilities. The Czech negotiation team repeatedly emphasizes that high-quality industrial cooperation projects aimed at ensuring the state's essential security interests can support the Czech Republic's decision to buy aircraft. At the same time, a meeting of a group of Czech pilots led by Brigadier Jaroslav Mka took place in Fort Worth. Throughout it, the importance of the 5th generation aircraft system was discussed, from the strategic task of deterring the opponent to its operational use in multidomain operations to the individual functions of the F-35 system in specific scenarios. Part of the program was an introduction to the production of the F-35, training programs and a practical demonstration of the pilot's equipment. In the end, the Czech pilots experienced some of the scenarios discussed in the solo demonstrator.
Tumblr media
"I am pleased that negotiations with U.S. government agencies are detailed and targeted. We are managing to obtain specific information that we need for a comprehensive perception of the design and processing of material for the government," said senior director Blanka Cupáková about the negotiations, adding that the approach on the American side is constructive.
"I intend to present to the minister a proposal for a set of specific and high-quality industrial cooperation projects between aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin and Czech companies. I am aware that the scope and quality of industrial cooperation offered to the Czech Republic will also be one of the criteria on the basis of which the government will decide on the possible acquisition of 5th generation aircraft," says senior director Blanka Cupáková.
In Washington, Senior Director Cupáková met with the head of the Joint Program Office (JPO) for F-35 aircraft, General Michael J. Schmidt. The theme of the interview was the aspects of the preparation of comprehensive information for the government of the Czech Republic. This was followed by a joint meeting of the Czech work team and American representatives of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) and the JPO. Its content was an evaluation of the fulfillment of partial tasks and the definition of the next procedure.
In addition to a more detailed specification of the possible funding profile, the discussion focused, for example, on personnel training requirements, the necessary infrastructure, the planned meeting of experts on security issues or the schedule. The government decided to start negotiations with the U.S. on the possible acquisition of 5th generation aircraft in July last year in response to the worsening security environment, especially Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.
By October 1, 2023, the Minister of Defense, Jana Ernochová, will inform the government about the results of these negotiations.

I was recommended by a friend to listen to this band, and I am glad I did. Their new single ‘Fresh Squeeze’ is a banger. Here is my interview with Purée
Tell us your band history, how did you form etc?
Well.
Basically Matt and Mack were living together both doing their own music projects as solo artists but always found themselves coming back to the idea of forming a band. Jack was in another band at the time but eventually left and started jamming with Matt and Mack. The pair had discreetly always wanted this as they had gone to watch jack a few times and fell In love with the way he played.
after months of ideas flowing and hype building amongst the now group of 3 we knew a drummer was majorly needed.
One day Matt put a story on his Instagram
Reading, “if anyone is a drummer or knows a drummer hit me up!” Not expecting much at all.
The following day as Matt was swiping through story’s, Liam popped up playing drums. He was incredibly talented and full of energy so Matt messaged him instantly asking to come round for a jam. He told Mack quickly after this that Liam was in-fact
“the one.”
We often talk about that moment as Liam says he only put that story up in hopes that it would be seen by Matt and boy are we glad he did.
After a long while Liam finally came by and jammed with the group and instantly we knew that we had formed something incredible. An unbreakable bond with energy that was so electric all of us could feel it.
soon after that moment we wrote our first song together which turned out to be Braindead, our very first release.
From the start, we all knew each other reasonably well. But watching one another become the best of friends through music we created will always be a great joy for us for many, many years to come.
Did the covid pandemic interrupt your plans?
Well we basically formed at the start of it all which we take as a blessing. It gave us lots of time to write music and learn how each other worked. we took a lot of time creating and tailoring a set for when we could eventually get out there on a stage and make our debut.
it was a really smooth process.
I am a big fan of your single “fresh squeeze” what is the song about, and how was the recording process?
Fresh squeeze is one of our OG songs we wrote together.
Simply put, the song is written about Liams strange addiction to fruit juice. Apple, orange, pineapple, blackcurrant you name it, he loves it.
So we wrote a song about it lol.
Recording the song was pretty breezy considering we knew it so well, so it was just a matter of adding a few little fun things we had on our minds that we could only do in the studio.
We record at treetop studios which is located close to where we all live in the Adelaide hills and it is a wonderful place to let our ideas fly and see them come to life.
When you write a new song, is it a joint effort in a jam session, or does a certain member bring a song already written to the studio.
Most of the time, one person will bring a set of chords, a bass line, a drum beat or a lead line and we just kinda jam on it for a second.
Usually from there sparks fly and we start adding the other parts as we individually see fit. Then we work on a basic structure of the song and the direction it should take.
The whole process is very much a group effort and each member adds their own flair to each song which is one of our favourite parts of working together.
Are you currently in the studio?
Yes we are! Right now we are just finishing up our next single and also chipping away at an EP which includes some of our early music we wrote together. It’s kind of a story book of our beginning as a band and it means a lot to us.
What is your career highlight?
At our first city show we played our debut single to what we thought was a crowd of fresh ears, but it turned out more people knew the song than we had first expected and they were singing our lyrics back to us, THAT was an incredible feeling that we will always remember and cherish.
What is your favourite venue to play?
The crown and anchor will always be close to our hearts as it was the first venue we played in the city, being back a few times now we really, really love it.
What do you think of the Adelaide music scene?
Our experience so far in the scene is that it’s super tight nit, full of talent and a joy to be a part of. Meeting bands left right and centre with the same love of music is a really cool thing to be involved in, we love it.
What other Adelaide bands should we listen to?
Dorkz, the Tullamarine’s, more colour, and stormy Lou are some of our favourites
Have you got any upcoming gigs you’d like to promote?
Our next show is gonna be a good one!
On the 17th of June we are playing at the grace Emily hotel with sycamore and sun sick daisy!!!
We are super excited.
What is your dream gig? (Venue, support etc.)
We can’t really think of any specific venues but we would love to tour the country.
A dream would be to play alongside one of our favourite bands “Kitschen boy” who are based in Melbourne.
What are your short/ long term goals?
Short term we would like to get some more music out there and do our first ever single release show alongside just playing as many gigs as we can. Our long term goals are really just to travel Australia sharing our music to new people all over, hopefully in the form of a tour someday!
Finally, where can people find you? Socials?
You can find us on Instagram and TikTok @pureeband
And on Facebook @pureebandaus
Also our music is on every platform you could imagine under the name, Purée

FA. I’m also really annoyed and baffled Simone and JB never did a photoshoot together (or truly just a joint interview? They might have done a print one conducted over zoom that I missed. But like - put the two of them in a room together!?)
Anyway, I’m definitely 🤡-ing here, but I wonder if S2 does indeed surpass S1 to become Netflix’s #1 English language series and #2 overall, one of the trade magazines might do a cover or feature about it? On how Bridgerton isn’t a pandemic fluke/Shonda’s triumph at Netflix/there’s a market for romance etc…and they’d possibly interview Simone and JB, with an accompanying photoshoot? They truly were the only part of S2 that resonated with audiences. I’ve never seen casuals irl or online talk about the side plots. It’s all Kanthony. And they’ll be an integral part of the ensemble moving forward.
They also might just put Shonda solo on the cover for an article like that though lmao. I want to believe 🤞🏽If Netflix campaigns the show and/or the actors for the Emmys (I definitely don’t think they’ll do as serious a push as last year though), that’s another possible opportunity for them to still be interviewed together.
Sorry for only just answering this now, I know it's been sat in my inbox for a while <3
There was this interview for Vogue Australia, and this one for Tatler Asia, I believe, and I think that's it? But yeah, both of these were remotely done, and Jonny and Simone weren't actually together. And there was not joint photoshoot. AND IT WILL NEVER MAKE SENSE.
I mean, season two has become the most watched English-language series, so we'll have to see if they get a write up because of that, but tbh, I'm not holding my breath? I think they'll probably just double down on the ensemble aspect, despite Kathony being so popular and the way people were talking about their chemistry?
I mentioned in a previous ask that I don't think Bridgerton will be an Emmy priority for Netflix, and beyond that, the writing for this season just wasn't good enough, especially when you consider the level of competition will be a lot higher this year. So with that in mind, I don't think we'll get any Jonny and Simone together for Emmys campaigning either. It suckssssss.

from you tag: “I something worry dnp don't fully understand why we love joint content so much and that's it's probably not for the reasons they assume”
If dnp were to ask you to explain to them what the difference is between what we actually want and what they think we want re joint content, how would you describe the difference? Like I think I agree but I also couldn’t articulate it well
Oof I will try but it's mostly just *wild hand gestures and grunts*
I think dnp sometimes still perceive us craving and wanting joint content as an excuse for 'fan service' (or phan service haha) with a focus on their relationship dynamic. Like our motives are based around wanting more ~heart eyes howell~ moments or #phanproof. Which I understand is a warranted assumption! They spent years seeing that kind of stuff and have been through a metric fuck ton of overstepped boundaries and feeling like their personal lives overshadowed the content they worked so hard on. So it's understandable that occasionally they're gonna have that mindset of "ugh they just want to watch us look at each other and see if we'll touch on camera now that we're out"
But like...that is so far removed from the case? Joint content brings out a completely different side in both of them. Phil unclenches from the AmazingPhil™️ persona a bit and it's like we get to see a more down to earth, human version of him. He just opens up so much more and shines when he's got someone pushing him. Solo Phil is fun and interesting, but you can tell when he's just going along with the AP approved list of reactions and script; it feels like real Phil isn't even in the room. But Dan (and maybe a handful of other people he's collabed with that he seems to feel comfortable with but this is about dnp right now) has the ability to nudge him out a bit. Because Phil is weird and funny and quick witted, but it's easy to play it safe when no one is pushing you to show it off. (Weird!Phil please return from the war)
And Dan!! First of all...joint content means he exists in the first place (god I miss him). Joint content Dan is so much softer and more approachable? Like twitter Dan and some of old solo Dan was what I can only describe as "I'm rolling my eyes that you're here invading my space even though I literally invited you". The walls are thick and high and you're wondering if you even know this person (*cough* ganp), but then you hear him on Stereo or he's chatting to us with Phil and you're like oh it's still Dan <3 I love Dan! And he likes us! He's such a kind and thoughtful and intelligent and fucking hilarious person, but some of that gets lost when all you have to go on is a generic Dinof tweet once a month. (And like Phil, there are people who've brought out those sides of him- like his interview with John which I could write an entire novel on dear god that was so fucking good).
They've acknowledged before that they know they have amazing on screen chemistry and an ~it factor~ as a duo, but I hope they know it's so much more than romantic (lol). They're just fun to watch and it’s so obviously THEY are having fun too? Like their happiness is palpable and it transfers to the audience instantly. And going to back to the conversation from yesterday, them together brings back a lot of really good memories and it's a safe place for a lot of people. Like yes the world is a on fire trash can, but Dan and Phil are still around being wonderful humans who can bring an unbridled amount of joy.
And to close I will admit that yes, it's also still a little bit of the "dear god what happened to the closed ice cream shop jesus please stop telling us things there was SO MUCH room on that couch why are y'all like this". Like no one..and I mean no one wants y'all to make out on camera or anything, but I don't think anyone can look at them and not feel something. Because I am, at my core, a gay who's spent over a decade now looking to them for hope that we sometimes do get happy endings and love and best friends soulmates arch enemies whatever the fuck else Howell has said

Thoughts on Street Dance of China 4 episode 2
(Aka Fishy is screencapping shows again. I’m screencapping straight from Youtube so sorry for the shoddy cut off screencaps but blame Youtube for having their player bar cover the video. I’ve never understood that because it’s always in the way.)
(Also Episode 2 part 1 is really just “How many times can Han Geng and Henry hug” and the answer is “as many times as they want”)
- Not really sure why Henry chose Anissa and Tuzi for the 2 vs. 2 battle, especially since Anissa was really not confident about it :( I felt really bad for Anissa because she seemed super nervous!!!!! I just hope that she doesn’t lose enthusiasm and that she can continue to enjoy the rest of the competition v.v
- Kelo and Uwa were extremely impressive though. Like, the way they move together is so awesome and cool.
- Among the dancers, Xiao Jie is actually really good at speaking. No wonder he gets interviewed a lot, because he’s able to describe the dancers to us layfolk, but he is also very smiley and entertaining.
- How dare Yixing be this cute 😤😤😤 He’s definitely far more relaxed when he’s just a spectator, that’s for sure. He was laughing at all the jokes and awkward moments and generally so much more animated when just part of the sidelines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Henry covering his mouth because he was enjoying Xiaohai’s performance was pretty cute too, not gonna lie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- I liked San’er from episode 1, so I was cheering for him when he participated in the 3 vs. 3 battle lol. But it was really interesting to hear the conversation when Wang Yibo asked his team why San’er lost the battle. Ye Yin and Liangliang told him that to the judges who are old school, they care less for explosiveness, and more for actual skill, and while San’er’s performance might’ve looked really exciting to the average viewer, that’s not what the old school judges look for.
- So apparently Lil Kev plays a lot of mind games, and we saw that during his battle against Bozi. So he’s like...the Brad Marchand of breaking lol.
- Are...are we gonna comment on this hug between Poppin’C and Xiaohai? Lmao
Tumblr media
- What are they being so cute for. (Also don’t @ me but Bunta is....really cute)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Is it just me, or did we get fewer behind-the-scenes practice clips this time for Han Geng vs. Henry compared to Yixing vs. Yibo? Particularly for the 5 vs. 5 battle.
- Dimple alert. (Sorry I know this is a Han Geng vs. Henry battle but Yixing just looks so freaking cute today)
Tumblr media
- Han Geng.....has a really soft and gentle voice (it is simping hours up in the fishy house okay). He speaks particularly quietly during his one-person interviews and his voice is so pleasant to listen to in those clips.
- Henry was talking about how he wanted to do that move with Poppin’C where they’d lean back on each other’s knees and do a wave with their arms. For some reason that move struck me as something that was very Henry like. He just strikes me as the kind of guy who uses a lot of waves and smooth-looking moves in his dances.
- Also lol @ Henry being “non fatigue!” That Ontario French curriculum at work.
- Han Geng and Henry trash talking each other except it just turns into a walk down memory lane about how Han Geng used to take care of Henry.
- Don’t even act surprised, y’all knew I was going to screenshot this.
Tumblr media
- Kitty is amused.
Tumblr media
- Of course Han Geng would end his routine with a big ol’ hug. What a huge softie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- I did think that Han Geng and Xiaohai were kind of a rough duo because even if they were in sync, it was hard to tell because of the height difference. Actually, I spent a lot more time focusing on Han Geng, especially towards the end when the rest of the team crowded around them and he was visibly one of the taller ones.
- Henry’s move where he stood on Poppin’C’s thighs was super cool!! His performance was just super fun to watch. I felt like I was having a good time along with them haha.
Tumblr media
- Please sir, may I have more hugs?
Tumblr media
- I think Han Geng and Xiaohai’s second performance was better because it relied less on being in sync performing the same actions. However, at this point, Poppin’C and Henry have kind of created a specific brand (TM) for themselves, like they are so uniquely charming to watch, so they have firmly won me over Han Geng and Xiaohai’s team.
- Running into a hug? Are you kidding me, Lau Hin-wah???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- More
Tumblr media
- Not only is this show cashing in on the Suju/Suju M fans, it is definitely going to pull in new fans with the Han Geng/Henry ship lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Yixing spinning to get up.
Tumblr media
- It is just so goddamn natural for them to be so close to each other. Also Han Geng said that his waist is feeling iffy from that popping ^^;; Old man joints
Tumblr media
- Lifting Han Geng’s shirt to look at his patch...
Tumblr media
- One of the dancers on Han Geng’s team was crying because he made a mistake in the 5 vs. 5 battle and Han Geng is like why are you crying? And gave him a playful slap on the shoulder.
Tumblr media
- Why is that the ads done by the dancer contestants are so much more entertaining than the professional ads (the ads with mainstream celebrities or with professional actors).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Henry’s written the pinyin on top of the Chinese names of his team members. Better safe than sorry, you know?
Tumblr media
- Lmao how dare they bully Tengzai and Shitou by making them talk XD
- I think that when Henry assigns his team members to certain battles, he is thinking more about the combination of styles, rather than the skill level or  synchronization. When he assigned Anissa and Tuzi to the 2 vs. 2 battle, he wanted to try out the East vs. West approach, but the opposing duo of Kelo and Uwa had a lot more history together and were obviously better as a collective unit. When it came to Chen Mo and Waiwai, he was interested in seeing a waacking duo. In theory I think I know what Henry was trying to imagine, but I think it is difficult to have a really intense waacking duo because it’d be hard to synchronize very high speed arm movements. In the end, they went with some moves that were simpler, and I think that’s why they lost out to Tengzai and Shitou. That being said, Henry did win his first battle against Han Geng. I think it’s just the 2 vs 2 battles that are his weakness. The 3 vs. 3 battles are really just individual battles, and the 5 vs. 5 battles are usually made up of dancers who are used to routine group dances as opposed to solo or duo dancers.
- A quick word about the judge Icee. His name in Chinese is 王冰冰. The 冰冰 part is self explanatory enough (冰 means ice), so where does the 王 come from? I read somewhere (I forgot where), but apparently his wife’s surname is 王, so he just took on her surname for his Chinese name. Don’t know how true that is, but I think that’s cute.
- So often I see Bunta and Ibuki having fun and cheering on other people, whether it’s their own team members or dancers on other teams.
- Less than a second flashback of Zitao from a previous season v.v Please producers...let us have a LayTao reunion....please....I beg....
Tumblr media
- The 5 vs. 5 battle between Yixing and Henry’s teams was pretty fun to watch, probably because the song was so hype lol.
- The leader battles between Yixing and Henry were really entertaining too though.
- The first piece of music for Henry and Yixing’s leader battles was very very cool. Like, it was just a nice piece of music to listen to, and I think that the kind of music it was gave way to rather creative interpretations. Henry and Han Yu went for a more story-based approach, whereas Yixing and MT Pop focused more on an aesthetic. I preferred Yixing and MT Pop’s performance here.
- Henry and Han Yu also had a pretty solid performance for the second song. As for Mingming and Gumball, they didn’t really perform “together,” because they were both doing their own thing, but their individual performances were interesting. (Also let us acknowledge, nothing gets Yixing turnt like KRUMP XD He was so into the performance haha)
- I was so caught up in the euphoria of Henry/Han Geng that I forgot that Henry and Yixing also had a past history, but I think their friendship probably mostly existed off screen. They were from different groups after all, but we also know how low key Yixing has always been. Even if they were bffs we never would’ve known. I also remember on Back to Field, Yixing said that Henry helped him install and set up his music software, so they probably have some kind of rapport on the music side. But yeah, it just seemed like Yixing was rather formal about it all, calling Henry his 哥哥/前輩. And Henry seemed to look at Yixing like his son lol. He was like oh look at Yixing and how far he’s come, etc.
- Xiao Jie said that he’d battled Hilty & Bosch 14 years ago, which means that Xiao Jie isn’t that young, which may be why he’s so chill lmao. Anyway, Xiao Jie is a very entertaining dancer to watch, and he worked well with Shen Zihao. But of course, HB are formidable themselves as well and their chemistry is just too too good. And they’re just incredibly clean dancers.
- Yibo went over to Han Geng to scope out who he was going to send out for their battle. Xiao Jie tried to warn Han Geng about this but he was too late and Yibo already made his attack. But the entire interaction between Yibo and Han Geng was so lols because it was so strange lmao. Yibo was straight up like “who are you going to send out during the battle?” And Han Geng kept thinking that Yibo was trying to play mind games and use that to gleam other information from him. So Han Geng’s answer ended up being really confusing too, he was like “if that’s what you’ve decided I’ll follow your lead.” The thing about Han Geng is that he is too senior for Yibo to clown on, so he is actually being serious, and Han Geng is trying to keep things light haha. (I think Yibo would totally be his normal gremlin self to Yixing and Henry, but Han Geng is like the next tier up from them both.)
- LMAO Aki-san calling out Tony-san for being older than him XD And Tony Gogo was like what have I ever done to you??? I love Aki-san hahahaha.
- Okay Aki-san vs. Nelson was pretty awesome, but SO WAS BORIS vs. ZYKO???? Holy crap that was sooo much fun to watch because like....human bodies can bend that way? And Boris and Zyko aren’t small guys, so it was insanely awesome to watch.
- Side note, Boris’ Mandarin is pretty good. I looked him up and on his Instagram he says he lives in Shanghai, so it makes sense that his Chinese is good enough for everyday communication. In one part of the show he was instruction Yibo on dancing and like, he was not stuttering at all.
- Wait, Han Geng says that he’s known Yibo for 10 years :o So I just looked him up and it turns out Han Geng has been with Yuehua Entertainment since 2010, so I think the math makes sense. Wow, how time flies. He always such a dad though, he’s always like, the top priority is fun and happiness!!! And honestly, he’s right. Like, what is this show if not just a huge dance showcase more than an actual competition?
- Physically impossible for Han Geng not to hug his didis.
Tumblr media
- I love that in a dance party full of dancers, some will still choose to slow dance like this.
Tumblr media
- Of course Henry will come and praise his gege. (ft. Nelson in the right lol)
Tumblr media
- Yo I love Rochka. He’s one of the chillest guys there.
Tumblr media
- The kids’ performance was cute :3 Their little jumpsuits uwu
Tumblr media
- Also one of the kids was Shitou’s daughter and it was absolutely hilarious how he still introduces her in the most monotonous and neutral voice and he was like “please give her some encouragement” in the most low energy voice ever XD The b-boying kids were super legit though. Oh and apparently Xiao Jie’s son was one of the dancers too :3 Somebody was like “yo Xiao Jie isn’t that your son?” and he was like “lol yeah.” XD Aren’t they cute?

Chris Morris at Variety, via Yahoo! News:
Eddie Van Halen, whose innovative and explosive guitar playing kept the hard rock band that bore his family name cemented to the top of the album charts for two decades, died on Tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.
Van Halen’s son Wold announced the news. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss,” he tweeted.
Born in the Netherlands and raised in Pasadena, he founded Van Halen with his older brother, drummer Alex; the siblings were joined by vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony in the first recording lineup of the group, which exploded after star-making gigs at such West Hollywood clubs as Gazzarri’s and the Starwood.
It was instantly apparent from “Eruption,” the solo showcase on Van Halen’s self-titled 1978 debut album for Warner Bros., that Eddie Van Halen was an instrumentalist to be reckoned with. In a mere one minute and 42 seconds, the axe man detonated a dazzling display of fretboard tapping, ringing harmonics, lightning-fast licks and smeared, dive-bombing effects.
Writing about that recording in Rolling Stone’s 2015 poll of the 100 greatest guitarists – in which Van Halen placed eighth, between Duane Allman and Chuck Berry – Mike McCready of Pearl Jam wrote, “It sounded like it came from another planet…[I]t was glorious, like hearing Mozart for the first time.”
Acting as the band’s musical director and co-authoring the band’s tough-riffing songs, which straddled the boundary between hard rock and heavy metal, Eddie Van Halen found immediate success, and formulated a style that would be emulated by hordes of long-haired rockers.
The group’s first LP “Van Halen,” though it climbed no higher than No. 19 in the U.S., would ultimately be certified for sales of 10 million copies. Its next five multi- platinum albums all reached the top 10; “1984,” released in its titular year, contained the band’s first and only No. 1 single, the synthesizer-driven “Jump,” and sifted another 10 million units.
Ongoing conflict between the guitarist and the antic front man Roth – who reportedly took exception to Van Halen’s extracurricular work, which included jaw-dropping lead guitar chores on Michael Jackson’s ubiquitous 1983 single “Beat It” — led the singer to split with the act after its elaborate and wildly successful 1984 tour.
Such a defection would likely have split a less popular band, but Van Halenfound even greater sales after ex-Montrose vocalist Sammy Hagar replaced Roth. Between 1986 and 1995, the group released four consecutive No. 1 albums.
However, Hagar ankled Van Halen after a tiff about the group’s planned greatest hits package. Eddie Van Halen brokered a truce with former singer Roth long enough to complete a pair of new tracks with the vocalist for the 1996 collection, but after another wrangle, a planned reunion with the singer broke down, and Gary Cherone, vocalist for the Boston pop-metal unit Extreme, signed on for a single album, “Van Halen III” (1998), which tallied comparatively meager sales.
Eddie Van Halen was dogged by personal and health issues that would intermittently interfere with his work in music over the course of the next decade. A chronic joint problem, exacerbated by his reckless onstage style, forced him to undergo hip replacement surgery in 1999. The onset of cancer – likely the result of heavy smoking – led to the surgical removal of part of his tongue in 2000.
The recording of three songs with Hagar for the two-disc compilation “The Best of Both Worlds” led to a lucrative 2004 reunion tour with Van Halen’s second lead singer. However, the alliance proved to be temporary, and it marked the end of both Hagar’s and bassist Anthony’s association with the group (though they would serve as representatives at the band’s 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, which the Van Halens and Roth declined to attend).
After years of false starts, Van Halen reconvened in 2007 with Roth as the front man and Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s 16-year-old son, replacing Anthony on bass. Though a tour grossed more than $90 million, it was plagued by rumors of inter-band strife.
Eddie Van Halen’s escalating drug abuse and alcoholism hastened his 2007 divorce from TV actress Valerie Bertinelli, his wife of 16 years, after a protracted separation. He entered rehab in 2007, and was reportedly sober from 2008.
“I was an alcoholic, and I needed alcohol to function,” he said in a 2015 interview with Chuck Klosterman. “I didn’t drink to party. Alcohol and cocaine were private things to me. I would use them for work. The blow keeps you awake and the alcohol lowers your inhibitions. I’m sure there were musical things I would not have attempted were I not in that mental state.”
A second tour fronted by Roth was launched on a more even keel in 2012, supporting an all-new album on Interscope, “A Different Kind of Truth,” which vaulted to No. 2. However, Eddie’s surgery for diverticulitis forced postponement of shows in Japan, which were among the first international dates since 1984.
Though whispers of further shows would swirl thereafter, Roth opined that “I think Van Halen’s finished” in a September 2019 radio interview in Detroit, just weeks before news of Eddie Van Halen’s treatment for throat cancer surfaced in the press.
Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was born Jan. 26, 1955, in Amsterdam. His father played the clarinet, saxophone, and piano, and both he and his brother Alex were schooled on the latter instrument from the age of six. They continued their studies after the family moved to Pasadena in 1962.
Though Eddie – who never mastered sight reading — would perform at classical piano recitals, he sought something contemporary and took up the drums, while Alex began playing guitar. The two teenage musicians would ultimately switch off their instruments; Eddie claimed Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, the respective guitar stars of Cream and Led Zeppelin, as his principal inspirations.
After high school years spent in local party bands, the brothers founded a new quartet – which they unwittingly named Genesis, ignorant of the English group’s existence – in 1972 with singer Roth, whose PA system they were renting for gigs, and bassist Mark Stone, who was replaced by Michael Anthony.
An attention-grabbing date at Gazzarri’s on the Sunset Strip by the rechristened Van Halen led to a demo session with Gene Simmons of KISS, who in the end opted out on working further with the band. However, as bassist Anthony recalled at the group’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, the act was signed after Warner Bros. chief executive Mo Ostin and producer Ted Templeman caught the band at a 1977 show at the Starwood.
Produced by Templeman, the band enjoyed a hit run of six albums with Roth as front man. Both “Van Halen II” (1979) and “Women and Children First” (1980) reached No. 6 nationally, while “Fair Warning” (1981) and “Diver Down” (1982) hit No. 5 and No. 3 respectively.
In the wake of the extroverted Roth’s exit and Hagar’s arrival, some anticipated a downturn in Van Halen’s popularity, but the new vocalist’s flair for power balladry and Eddie Van Halen’s still-puissant guitar attack thrust four albums to the sales pinnacle: “5150” (1986), “OU812” (1988), “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” (1991) and “Balance” (1995).
However, the band never found similar chemistry with Cherone, and Van Halen only witnessed renewed life when it regrouped with Hagar and Roth in the new millennium.
Eddie Van Halen is survived by his second wife, the band’s former publicist Janie Liszewski, whom he married in 2009, and his son.
RIP Eddie Van Halen.

A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.

OVERALL COMPANY
Entering the fourth quarter of the year, the company is beginning to put the final touches on what they plan for their artists in 2021. Gold Star’s position as the current top company is viewed as more perilous to both company heads and investors than it may look from the outside, and they’re looking to solidify their status more before the end of the year. Media reports about the company’s performance so far this year steadily trickle out throughout the month and reflect both Gold Star executives’ and investors’ opinions of Origin, Femme Fatale, and their first soloist being the backbones of the company’s public image at the moment. This could lead to continued mismanagement, but internally, the company is trying to work out a way to keep everything from becoming a mess in the new year.
Important dates:
(September 30)-October 2: Chuseok vacation (no activities save for any individual schedules).
October 31: Gold Star Halloween Masquerade Ball.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 1
After preparing for so long, she embarks on the beginnings of her new tour this month. She’ll be around the country this month before she departs to other parts of Asia next month. She’s adored enough that there’s little doubt the audience will be packed and each night is fully expected by management and fans alike to go off without a hitch. She has a little more freedom in her concerts than some of Gold Star’s other artists do, allowing her to more room to decide her own ments between songs.
Important dates:
October 3: Love, Poem tour concert at Woman’s University Universiade Gymnasium in Gwangju.
October 4: Love, Poem tour concert at Woman’s University Universiade Gymnasium in Gwangju.
October 10: Love, Poem tour concert at Incheon Namdong Gymnasium in Incheon.
October 17: Love, Poem tour concert at Sajik Gymnasium in Busan.
October 24: Love, Poem tour concert at KSPO Dome in Seoul.
October 25: Love, Poem tour concert at KSPO Dome in Seoul.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 2
She continues to gear up for the dual release of the Korean and English versions of her holiday single this month. She’ll have some more concept meetings about the overall feeling they’re going for as well as the final storyboard for the music video that is scheduled to be shot next month. In the meantime, this month, she’ll need to go in to get the teaser photos for the single successfully shot on the 16th.
Important dates:
October 16: Comeback teaser photo shoot.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 3
After finishing music show promotions, he takes off to the United States to do a limited run of press in the country in the form of YouTube videos for the channels of American fashion magazines (Elle, Allure, and Glamour) and as well as a performance set at the YouTube Space in New York. This set of promotions is aimed toward earning him new English-speaking fans that aren’t yet familiar with him or his music, especially ones not already interested in Korean music artists. Next month, he’s set to begin preparing and rehearsing for his next world tour.
Important dates:
October 24: End of music show promotions.
October 26: Elle Song Association video, Allure video, and Glamour fan fact check video filming.
October 27: Performance [1, 2, 3, 4] at YouTube Space NY in New York, NY, USA.
SILHOUETTE
After shooting the teaser photos for their special edition repackage at the beginning of the month, the members are asked to focus on anything and everything to be able to give their best vocal performance during promotions since they’ll be singing with very little backing track and they have a reputation as strong live singers to live up to. As the comeback is mainly marketed as a special gift to fans, there won’t be much additional promotion besides music shows. The members are also informed this month that Gold Star has arranged for them to hold a 19+ only concert, a first for idols and an attempt by the company to help market them as a step beyond typical idols to help their longevity as artists, at the start of the new year which they’ll begin rehearsing for next month.
Important dates:
October 5: Comeback teaser photo shoot.
October 25: Release of “Cleansing Cream” & Sixth Sense Special Repackaged Edition repackaged album, music show promotions continue through November 25.
ARIA
For the final month of Queendom, the group must prepare and release a new original song. They’ll be recording “Moonlight” in the first week of the month. In the second and third week, they’ll learn the choreography and attend fittings for the outfits they’ll be wearing. Full details of Queendom filming for this month can be found here. The members are also informed they’ll begin real comeback preparations next month and their next album will not include their finale song from Queendom.
Important dates:
October 1: Episode six of Queendom airs.
October 8: Episode seven of Queendom airs.
October 15: Episode eight of Queendom airs.
October 19: Stage outfit fittings.
October 22: Episode nine of Queendom airs.
October 29: Queendom episode ten live filming. (original song: “Moonlight”)
ORIGIN
As everyone expected, “On” was a success, even if not matching the massive hit they had on their hands last year with “Boy with Luv”, and the end of music show promotions comes on a high note. They’re done with new music releases and promotions for the year, but that doesn’t mean time to rest, as they’ve been chosen to become new ambassadors of FILA and have a promotional photo shoot and video to film that will be used to announce their new partnership.
Important dates:
October 18: End of music show promotions.
October 20: FILA photo shoot.
IMPULSE
PULS2 continues working on their debut, but after returning from Chuseok, all of the members of Impulse are tasked with beginning to rehearse for the end of the year fan meeting they’ll be holding. The themes of the fan meeting will be looking back on their debut and their relationship with their fans. Accordingly, they’ll be shooting a teaser photo for the fan meeting this month that remakes their debut teaser photo. They’ll also be in the dance studio refreshing themselves on some old songs and will be pulled aside to film interviews talking about how they look back on Who’s Next?: Origin Story, their debut, and their journey so far at this point in their careers that will be used for the VCRs of the fan meeting.
Important dates:
October 8: Fan meeting debut photo recreation teaser photo shoot.
      ↳ PULS2
Their debut is fast approaching next month, so on top of continued practice for their first stages as a unit, they’ll be in front of the camera a lot this month. Not only do they have to film the music video for their title track , but they also have to film short track films for each of the songs on the album. Teaser photo [2, 3] and fittings have to be fit in this month as well before the potential chaos of a Gold Star Media’s first ever sub-unit debut comes next month.
Important dates:
October 11: MV and stage outfit fittings.
October 17: Track films shoot.
October 19: Teaser photo [2, 3] shoot.
October 20: “Focus On Me” MV filming.
FUSE
After their extended Chuseok break comes to an end, the members of Fuse return to group schedules without much on the books for this month. They’re still riding on the success of “Psycho”, as it’s too early to begin preparing another comeback and they won’t continue their tour for a couple more months. Instead, as the new year gets closer and closer, they’re tasked with shooting their Season’s Greetings for fans. For the upcoming year, the photo shoot is themed after each member posing with a stuffed animal representing them (admin note: muns may choose what animal is assigned to represent their muse, but there shouldn’t be any overlap between members!).
Important dates:
October 3-6: Extended Chuseok break.
October 19: Season’s Greetings shoot.
ELEMENT
Element’s schedules slow down again as the weather begins to turn cold with no promise of when their next comeback will happen. While the company is fielding any songs submitted with creative involvement by the members, they also do continue to look to outside and in-house producers despite the rarity of existing songs written for co-ed groups. In the meantime, the company has arranged for them to collaborate with a popular dance cover group in videos for both Element’s Youtube channel as well as the dance cover team’s Youtube channel for a joint dance performance of “Dumb Litty”.
Important dates:
October 12: “Dumb Litty” dance cover crew collab [2] [3] filming.
FEMME FATALE
The time has come for the members to hold their first ever fan meeting (where they’ll be performing their assigned solo stages they’ve been rehearsing)..Compared to other months this year, October is more relaxed outside of the practice they have to keep up with ahead of the fan meeting.
Important dates:
October 24: Private Stage fan meeting at Olympic Hall in Seoul.

exposingSMG recap: demi / jonas brothers
*DISCLAIMER: please take all of this w/ a grain of salt! This of course is just speculation, but I thought it would be fun to do a recap. All in the name of pop culture fun and games, which we desperately need in quarantine timez*
writer starts with key factors of their fallout:
sharing the same manager (2008-2018), wilmer, package deals that later turned into hell.
Demi / Joe started dating in the beginning of filming camp rock
was a real relationship, that also had benefit of being marketed since they played love interests in their movie
producers would've marketed them anyways even if they weren't dating
Demi / Joe broke up in June 2010 after 2 years together
2010 was the beginning of the downfall of the Jonas Brother's relevancy in the industry due to Justin Bieber now on the scene (and later in 2011, also one direction)
Demi left camp rock tour due to addiction, mental health, and an eating disorder and entered treatment until January 2011
with the release from treatment, Demi was now becoming the bigger star with the success of Skyscrapper and GYHAB (starting the switch of fame levels which plays a crucial part in their future fallout)
jumps ahead to 2012: Demi is now an X-Factor judge, and invites Nick to join her on the show mentoring her contestants
this was their first time seeing each other since 2010
they didn't really reunite again until 2014 after Nick starts getting traction as a solo artist
jumps to 2013, begins discussing Wilmer and his relationship w/ Demi
2013 was a really difficult year for Demi (body issues, mental health, addiction)
Wilmer worsened these issues x10
Demi wasn't her thinnest at this time, and Wilmer let her know it
brings up how you never seen photographs of Wilmer publicly w/ Wemi in 2013, but when she became very thin 2014-2016 he was photographed w/ her nearly daily
Demi doesn't and hasn't ever spoken about 2013 and the hardships she endured
jumps to 2014: Phil decides to market Demi to bring more relevancy & fame to Nick and the start of his solo act, while ultimately using her to arrange JoBro reunion in future
little by little Demi became more involved w/ Nick & Joe
Demi performed avalanche w/ Nick, and brought out Joe on tour to perform their camp rock duet
Demi / Nick quickly became BFF again, unofficial PR package by Phil
compares this to Camilla and Shawn's friendship which was also used for PR
states this is no drag, as it's a business tactic often used - uses another example, this time Scooter w/ his (at the time) most successful client Justin, bringing Ariana to open his 2013 tour (like JoBro & Demi 2008), and booking tori an awards show main stage performance
jumps to 2015: Joe debuts w/ DNCE and Demi starts getting close to Joe again
Demi then introduces Nick & Joe to Wilmer - this is how they became friends, though he is closer to joe
in December 2015, Demi went on vacation w/ Wilmer, Joe, AND NICK
calls Demi out for stupidity bringing her ex on vacation w/ her man
Joe / Nick knew of all the abuse from Wilmer. They knew he was drugged up, they knew about the partying and cheating, they knew how this contributed to her 2013 breakdown which led her continuously running back to drugs.
jumps to late 2015/early 2016 - Confident era was a very successful era for Demi and her highest debut since HWGA
this was a great time for Phil to make Demi tour w/ Nick (actually dropping Adam Lambert as opening act for Nick instead - this wasn't mentioned, but important info) to expose Nick to a mainstream audience again when he releases his solo album June 2016.
Future Now joint tour was depending solely on Demi to sell the tickets, and to help bring Nick's name out there
Nick's album LYWC was released June 10th 2016, Future Now tour began June 29th
albums aren't normally released so close to tour start dates
Demi & Nick are now doing everything together - joint interviews, that sexy Billboard magazine cover, attending events together
They became a PR package deal thanks to Phil, not just Nick but DNCE as well (mentions DNCE did have different manager at the time, but still w/ ties to Phill)
DNCE debut flops - Phil  sticks Joe w/ Demi to find relevancy
Confident era was basically Demi just reviving Nick/Joe's solo career
DNCE having troubles getting another hit after Cake By The Ocean, Phil invites them to Future Now tour - they actually performed twice, July & September
everyone knew DNCE wouldn't last, it was a build up for future Jonas Brothers reunion
Demi / DNCE were now doing interviews together, attending events together and go on to perform Toothbrush together
even during Demi's big grammy night with nomination, she was hanging w/ DNCE
Demi was very supportive of DNCE, often promoting them
during this time, Joe continues to maintain really close friendship w/ Wilmer
DNCE / Demi appearances continue up until 2017
2017 is where the little PR package between the 3 ends, up until now they were still good friends often seen together
September 2017 Demi releases Tell Me You Love Me
Only time Nick is brought up is when she's questioned about her song Ruin The Friendship
On Ellen she was asked about the romance rumours between her and Nick and the song. Demi tells Ellen she never reveals who her lyrics are about, Ellen replies "So it's Nick?" and Demi just laughs
the reason people believe the song is about Nick is because the song literally spells out "Nick Demi" in the lyrics
She's asked about it in another interview - "People think it's about Nick" where Demi awkwardly replies "Oh.."
writer states none of sources were actually able to confirm or deny the rumoured romance, and that she doesn't know what happened between them or if they hooked up or not - Demi never spoke about it.
states that based off what she does know, she believes they at the very least hooked up and that Demi ended up falling.. hard
she again states Nick is a genuinely good guy, and she can't remember the last time Demi actually had that
jumps ahead to 2018 - Nick and Priyanka.
Nick & Priyanka are in, what is known in Hollywood, a marriage PR. She says to expect a pregnancy reveal, as Priyanka really wants it while Nick is still eh on the idea
she says they aren't actually really getting alone
When Demi heard about the news of them, she wasn't happy at all
She looked down upon Nick for stooping that low getting himself into a PR marriage
Demi actually called Nick out on it, and that is likely a big reason she wasn't invited to the wedding
She goes on to say Priyanka is both very controlling and attention seeking, and also likely didn't want the headlines of Demi at their wedding stealing the show away from her
she says as we've likely all seen, Demi doesn't care about her image at all.
Demi has had multiple opportunities for PR relationships to further her career, but always said no and that her career is about her life and her story.
Adds that if Demi was actually on board with the Niall Horan romance staged by Simon in 2012, she may have had a better outcome in the industry today
Jumps to 2018 - Demi's overdose, their fallout
As fast as Demi welcomed back the brothers into her life and bringing them back into mainstream, they dropped her even faster after her OD
Demi never forgot how they helped her on her debut, taking her on their tour, any of it - she repaid them w/o starting any problems within their management team by welcoming them into her career while she was the bigger star
says the second Nick got arranged w/ Priyanka in 2018 and Joe ran to Sophie Turner, continuing becoming besties w/ Wilmer (who emotionally abused to her the point she believed she was worthless) - she ran to drugs and alcohol.
says she doesn't believe Demi is mad at them for being friends w/ Wilmer, but instead hurt that they chose him over her despite knowing him to be a big contribution to her downfall
Begins discussing Phil, her former manager.
Demi was used by Phil as a marketing mule for the two acts he always chose to book better slots for, just using Demi as a ladder to get there.
Phil never did anything smart for Demi's career, instead convinced her she was a weak little puppy who needed his help - just to further his management career while throwing her away at the end of it.
He never supported her decisions, tried to force Tell Me You Love Me as the lead single from same titled album despite Demi begging for Sorry Not Sorry
Demi had to go to Jay-Z to get his help and back her up for SNS being the right choice (which was top 10 hit, 5x platinum, & biggest hit to date.)

careful ch1 - john deacon x reader
summary: you are a ballet student at the royal ballet academy. To pay for your tuition, you work part-time at the celebrity gossip magazine, Seven. One fateful day you’re sent to interview a band on the rise, Queen, post-concert. When you’ve got your material and the goofy band is set to leave, you learn that John Deacon may be the sweetest gentleman to ever grace this planet.
words: 2.5k+
warnings: swearing
author’s note: this is my entry for @bensroger 3k fic challenge! congrats <3. the promptline is bolded at the end. (and just as a little nod to me, the magazine Seven doesn’t exist in real life, at least i don’t think so. i took it from a horrible gossip magazine in finland, Seiska, who’s known for paying celebrities to get into scandals so they can write about it.)
[ch1] [ch2] [ch3] [ch4] [ch5] [ch6] [ch7] [ch8]
chapter one
The venue was filled with people. Screaming girls and guys who wanted to play it cool in their leather jackets and long hair. Every atom in your body was begging you to leave, to not get caught and melded into these people, but you pressed on, earning dirty looks from some hardcore fans. You held on tightly to the camera your magazine, Seven, had lent you for the evening, adrenaline making your hands tremble ever so slightly.
You were almost at the front of the stage, unscrewing the lens cap slowly, painted nails shimmering in the show lights.
“Thank you all for coming out tonight, we really appreciate it darlings,” the booming voice of tonight’s band’s frontman echoed through the concert hall and was met with loud cheering. Freddie Mercury sure could handle a crowd. You peered at him through your camera, lights catching his eyes and shadows strengthening his jawline and snapped a picture.
Queen was worth every bit of praise ever given to them by fans and undeserving of the snobby critique from so called experts in music. And they could really put on a show. It was a real perk of part-time magazine work. Free (but, to be fair, very lousy) tickets to noisy concert halls and backstage passes and enough confidence and status to elbow your way to the front of the crowd.
You’d never seen Queen live before. Of course you knew their music, who didn’t, but their tickets were either costly or the shows were at bad times. Your training schedule didn’t allow too much time for late nights and parties. You only had one day off a week and even that was spent stretching and practicing, making sure your joints didn’t ruin themselves with the amount of ballet you danced. You began wondering if you should’ve come sooner. Everything was mesmerising.
When your favourite song of theirs, Liar, started playing the bassist moved very close to where you were standing. His brown curls bounced as he skillfully played his solo, occasionally bringing his index and middle finger to his lips and licking them to keep them running more smoothly on the strings.
You turned on your camera flash to catch the metallic glint of his bass strings and he saw the light in the corner of his eyes and turned to you, small smile playing on his lips. He locked eyes with you for what seemed like forever before turning back to his instrument, licking his lips slyly. A small blush tingled at your cheeks.
Disappointment washed over you as they finished the final note of their last song, Nevermore. “You’ve been a lovely crowd, London! Thank you very much!” Freddie bowed on the stage, absorbing the cheers of the crowd. Somebody in the crowd was crying. Each member had sweat glistening on their cheeks and they were breathing heavily but still managed to look perfectly put together.
They disappeared backstage and you had to rush to beat the crowd. With your backstage pass you slipped past security, waving your Seven worker ID and made your way quickly to the dressing rooms. Though you had tried you best to beat the groupies and one-time fans, the amount of people yelling and waving autographs and chattering excitedly was almost sickening. It was worse backstage. Your heart jumped to your throat and your chest tightened. “I fucking hate this job,” you mumbled.
You’d spent the day rehearsing as an understudy for the main role in Swan Lake, then you had to rush to the office to grab your camera and audio recorder before taking the tube to a small concert hall in east London. You were tired, anxious and now had to fight for an interview with the band.
A wave of dizziness and nausea cut through you and sent you walking funny, looking like a drunk. You set your hand against the wall to gain your balance, bile rising to your throat. The nausea came in waves, each one stronger than the last, sending you weak at the knees. When was the last time you ate? You skipped lunch to rehearse extra, then didn’t you have that meeting? You drank coffee? Black as usual. And then? It’d been hours. You steadied yourself, breathing slowly.
”It’s going to be ok,” you told yourself. ”Not going to make a fool of myself. Not today.”
And with the balance of a newborn calf you hobbled ahead in the crowd, using your elbows rather rudely to get to the front. Once you were faced with an underpaid security guard, you coughed to get his attention.
”Excuse me, I have a backstage pass, can I get through?”
His face scrunched as if to say I’m-totally-tough-and-qualified but his nervous nod told you he was just a buff college student.
”Thanks,” you say without looking him in the eyes and quickly slipping past.
The dressing room door was adorably adorned with a star with the band name Queen on it, just like in some movie. You supposed the movies must’ve gotten their inspiration somewhere. You knocked determinedly, hearing clamour inside as loud voices fought over who should answer.
”Listen, John, you’re closest to the door, it makes sense!” An annoyed voice ushered someone inside.
”Freddie, you’re the frontman, I don’t want a 16 year-old drooling here again, you can turn them away,” a quieter voice replied.
You had to roll your eyes, before replying. ”Listen, I’m not a drooling teenager. I’m here to interview you, Y/N Y/N/L, from Seven.”
A triumphant laugh was heard before the lock turned. A sheepish bassist gave you a soft smile, hiding mostly under his hair. You returned the smile, before stumbling in, legs still shaky. ”You okay?” He grabbed your arm to steady you.
”Yes,” you nodded. ”It’s just been a long day.” He looked wary to let you stand on your own.
The band in all their glory, looked like silly kids, with their brightly coloured dressing gowns and long hair and little snickers and inside jokes that ran around the room quickly, sometimes only through eye-contact.
”Y/L/N? Don’t think I’ve heard of you before,” Freddie spun around gleefully in his chair.
”Well, I don’t usually write the articles or get credit. I only work part-time, getting the material, then a more popular writer takes the credit so we get more buys of the paper,”
”Scandalous,” Freddie laughed, before gesturing to the grey and slightly dumpy sofa across from him. ”Sit, I want to get this over with while there’s still hours left of the night.”
Slowly, the rest of the band gathered around you. Brian May with his poodle hair and soft laugh, Roger Taylor with his high-pitched singing voice but incredibly scratchy speaking voice and the shy and quiet John Deacon, who was the most attentive, laughing at just the right moments.
You set your little audio recorder on the sofa before beginning. ”So, I had to fight my way through quite the crowd of- John, how’d you put it? Drooling teenagers. How’s that feel?”
The extrovert in you shined as you chatted with the band, each of them giving you half-assed but hilarious answers.
”Oh you know, it’s our scene. This is usual.” Freddie flicked his wrist bashfully.
”I have to battle fangirls when I step outside all the time,” John quipped back and you threw your head back laughing. Queen was making it big, but was yet to hit that sweet goldmine of number one songs. And they were yet to have too much of an international career.
The interview continued well but soon the boys grew tired of talking about themselves and were arguing about meaningless things together. With that you shut your little recorder and took one last photo which showed them deep in discussion before coughing loudly. ”I think that’s it, Queen. I got some good material. Thanks!”
”I’m up for a drink now. Talking so long parched me.” Taylor got up, fluffing his hair slightly. The band hummed in unison, getting up and dusting themselves off.
You flipped through the notes you’d taken to help the final writer get an idea of the scene as the dressing room emptied. John stayed behind, packing his bass carefully into the its case.
“Not the man for partying, are you?” You leaned closer to him on the couch.
“Ha, well not today. It was a long show.”
The voices of the band got further and further away. You stayed sitting for just a little longer, intently watching John in thought. You thought it wasn’t possible to look flattering in bright white lights but clearly he was here to prove you wrong. He glanced at you when he felt eyes on him and you both blushed before turning away.
“Right,” you snapped your notebook shut. “I’ll get going.” You maneuvered yourself off the couch and managed a few steps ahead before the world went black.
It was disorienting to find yourself on the floor with no memory of how you got there. Your ears were ringing and the light stung your eyes. “Oh my god, are you okay?”
He was leaning over you, long hair tickling your cheeks, eyes wide with concern.
“Mmwh happened?” You started to mumble, throat dry.
John sighed, relieved before helping you sit up against the couch. “You must’ve blacked out.”
“Lovely,” you said sarcastically, rubbing your head.
“Should I be concerned?” He whispered to you, sitting down awfully close. You felt your heart rate pick up. He smelt like a generic brand of after-shave mixed with something fruity, like a cocktail.
“Not at all,” you slowly rose to a more upright position. “I just haven’t eaten in a while,”
“That’s not very good.” He chuckled. “I’ll be a little concerned, just in case.”
You managed a feeble laugh and looked down at your hands. “I’ll be ok.”
“Yeah, once you’ve gotten home and eaten. You must be so overworked. I can drive you home.”
You set your face in your hands, embarrassed, and sighed. “God, y’know what I told myself today? That I wasn’t going to make a fool of myself. And here I am, not only being a fool but being a bother.”
“You’re no bother. I would’ve had to drive out of here anyway. Now I’ve got company.” He gently pried your hands away from your face.
“You’re too sweet.”
You were both very close, hands on top of each other on the floor. When he looked your way you could feel his short, shallow breaths on your face, as if he was afraid to break the moment. “It’s nothing.” And yet, in those few memorable seconds, it was everything.
“Right then,” he coughed and stood up. “Can you walk?”
“Yeah, thanks,” you bit your lip and tucked stray strands of hair behind your ear. He helped you stand and you leaned on him for support.
“I feel like a right idiot,” you started.
“Don’t fuss about it.”
Meekly, let him help you into the van, his long fingers wrapping entirely around your wrist. When you were safely strapped in, you looked up at him. He was leaning on the roof of the van and you felt his warm breath on your cheeks. ”Thank you,” you managed to breathe out.
He looked away, red spreading on his face. ”You’re welcome.”
He got into the driver’s seat swiftly, turning the keys in the ignition. The purr of the engine lulled you softly into a trance-like state of only taking notice of the cars passing you by. John kept stealing glances at you. You were so breathtaking. Even when you weren’t talking, he was sure you’d captivate a room with you clever eyes and the left corner of your mouth that twitched upward when you were suppressing a laugh.
“I never asked any questions about you,” he finally spoke up as he turned to you. “I spent all that interview talking about myself and never once wondered about you.”
“Well, that’s good. I wasn’t the one being interviewed.” You shrugged, a bit dazed but still paying attention.
“Can I ask about you now?”
You tried to not let a blush rise on your cheeks as you replied. “Sure.”
“You mentioned you only work part-time at Seven. Why’s that?”
“I’m a dancer student at the Royal Ballet Academy. But it’s costly and celebrity gossip pays surprisingly well.”
It was like talking to an old friend. Conversation flowed easily. He asked about your career and you talked about his music. John felt like he’d been quiet for forever and finally it was all spilling out. The fame he’d taken on after auditioning for fun as a student. The anxiety surrounding meeting fans who screamed his name.
You finally park on the corner of the street you lived on. A line of rusty cars and motorcycles with chipped paint made it very hard to park the van. You let yourself yawn, your mouth opening wide, like a lions. Not only had you been practically starved all day, it’d also been way too long since you slept. John helped you up out of the van.
“Are you tired?” He whispered. The world was so quiet at 1am in a dusty corner of London.
”A bit yeah,” you grinned. ”I think I’ll eat something and then crash. Boom, out like a light.” You stumbled a bit in your step.
He noticed your weak attempts at walking. ”Here,” suddenly he was leaning in front of you, as if trying to give you a piggyback ride. ”Hop on, I’ll carry you the rest of the way.”
”What?” You flushed.
”You heard me. I think you’re about two steps from collapsing again.”
With an embarrassed huff, you clambered onto his back, your skirt riding up your thighs as he hoisted you up. You buried your face into his hair as he slowly made his way over to the apartment. ”Sorry the parking’s so shitty and you have to drag me like this.” You whispered, very close to his ear.
”Don’t worry,”
”But seriously. Bet you, this isn’t how you saw the night going.”
”No, but this is better. You’re good company.”
”Shush,” you laughed.
At your front door he set you down and let you settle your skirt before turning around. His hair was ruffled and his cheeks flushed but he grinned like an idiot. ”We’re your castle, I suppose,”
You managed a small laugh before a yawn took over. “Tonight’s been great, thank you.”
“My pleasure.”
“Alright then.” You paused, wanting to stay with him for longer. “Goodnight, John.”
“Goodnight, Y/N. And good luck. With your dancing.”
“Thanks.”
You swallowed hard, and with a small wave you turned around and unlocked your door looking one final time at this strange bassist, with his bouncy curls and soft smile. You paused a bit before calling out.
“John?”
He looked up, eyes glinting in the orange glow of the streetlights. “Yes?”
“Will I see you again?”
He grinned. “I hope so,” he got into his car and rolled down the window. “It’s a small world, after all.”
You laughed, leaning against the doorframe. “Alright then, John Deacon. I guess I’ll be seeing you.”
And with that, he drove off, music playing down the street through his open window. You felt your heart skip as you closed the door to your apartment.

Cure March 2019 Show (A9) x Issei (BugLug) Interview
Tumblr media
A9 and BugLug have announced they will hold a nationwide 2-man tour. The tour title is "Noroshi -TOO FAST TO LIVE TOO YOUNG TO DIE-"!! The front cover feature of the first Cure publication of 2019 is a special photoshoot with the vocalists Show and Issei. They will visit a total of 6 cities, starting on March 21 in Fukuoka, then Osaka, Nagoya, Sendai, Sapporo, and Tokyo. Do not miss this big event.
The two bands played together at "Bug Summit" in August last year, but when did you first personally meet each other?
Issei: It was in 2016.
Show: Yes. In 2016 there were talks of doing a 2-man tour together. So the two of us had a meeting to decide on a title, as the band representatives.
What were the sequence of events leading up to doing a 2-man tour?
Show: I originally had this image of BugLug that they were a stylish and good band, and I think at the time they were promoting "Saru". In addition to the feeling that they were different from the rest, even among my band members we talked about them, like "BugLug are pretty awesome" and "I'd like to play with them". Our staff at the time had connections to BugLug's company, and they said "We are more than happy to do it".
Issei: I was really glad when I heard about it. Of course, I had known about the band A9 from a long time ago. I like their songs so I listened to it a lot, and their looks are just plain freaking cool. When I first saw them, my first impression was "What's with their band? They're awesome. They're all charismatic".
I mean, from Issei's point of view, they were a band that were featured in magazines before you had started your band.
Issei: Yes. I had strong feelings of wanting to be successful like them, and after all, people want to play with the bands they like, right? And that's exactly why I thought that we could find value in touring together.
Show: So as we continued talks about the tour, in May, Issei got into an accident1......
Issei: I screwed it up. Despite the offer, we ended up having to forgo it. That's why when we met again at Bug Summit, I felt very apologetic.
Show: When I saw Issei, I thought "Oh, he's able to bleach his hair now!".
Issei: Hahaha! (laughs)
Show: No, but our guitarist (Tora) recently fell into bad health, so I worry, like "What are his limits?". That's why we couldn't send them the offer of a 2-man tour. But I was glad since it seems like the feeling of us wanting to do it got through to the staff we have in common.
Issei: Yes. Now, I thought once again that "I want to do this no matter what". Even after 3 years, that passion never died out.
So it's a 2-man tour that came true after 3 years. By the way, when it was announced that this tour would be happening there was a line in a news article that said both bands "started activities pretty much at the same time". But this year is A9's 15th year anniversary, and BugLug's 10th year anniversary, right?
Issei: Our first live was at the beginning of 2010, so if you count it starting from there, it's our 9th year.
Show: But the band I was in before A9 and the band BugLug’s guitarists and bassist was in before BugLug started pretty much at the same time, and we often played together. We also have this connection where we have a member in our bands that used to be a roadie for Baroque. That's why they don't really feel like our juniors.
So you were acquainted with Kazuki, Yuu and Tsubame from a long time ago?
Show: Well, Tsubame is sociable, so whenever we played together, he would come and talk to us quite often, but it's only recently that I've come to talk to Yuu a lot. Yuu is now addicted to this game I used to be addicted to a while ago, so I thought it would be nice if we could play together.
Issei: We have quite a lot in common other than music.
For example?
Show: For example, both Issei and I are in charge of artwork in our bands. Both of our image resources aren't Visual-kei, but high fashion, paintings, and contemporary art. I like combining the good qualities of such things with the Visual-kei that our seniors have built up, so I am quite critical of things that are like a rehash of past works. But there are times when I think "That's cool" about BugLug. Sometimes I get annoyed, like "Ah, they outdid us".
Issei: Sorry (laughs).
Show: That's the kind of image I had of them before meeting them, and even after talking to them, I can sympathize with the borderless thing they do. However, I liked to interpret art in an animated way to change the format and bring it into Visual-kei, but Issei brings the artwork as it is into Visual-kei.
Issei: That's right.
Show: That is quite a hardline approach. Unlike me, he doesn't add in arranged elements from the grey zone similar to Visual-kei, like anime or cosplay. To keep on trying to strongly bring about a chemical reaction like that requires a lot of courage. I think that is a good stance. And because I sympathise with this attitude despite not even talking to him that much, I feel that we are connected in a good way. In actuality, since this 2-man tour was decided, I've only properly talked to him at one meeting and during the joint photoshoot.
By the way, was the tour title "Noroshi2" the one that was decided back in 2016?
Issei: No. Although we had considered it, we hadn't reached a decision on it. But from the beginning, there was this feeling that if these two bands did something together, perhaps something new would come out from it, so the title was suggested again. On top of that, Show added "TOO FAST TO LIVE TOO YOUNG TO DIE", so it's no mistaking that this is a title the two bands decided on. I think that the real thrill of the this tour will be the bands doing the tour with those words in mind.
Show: The phrase "TOO FAST~" is often used in punk rock, but considering the incident with Issei, the phrase really hits you hard. It's about the the gratitude of merely being able to be in a band, or rather, even if we are living recklessly, it would be better to do what you want to do. I think that both bands have these feelings.
Issei: We do. I feel it quite a lot.
I see. Was the group artist photo artwork done together?
Issei: That's right. We had many ideas at the meeting, and from that, Show followed up with "red".
Show: I photoshopped the photo so it was like a red smoke signal had been fired, and from within that, the ten of us were there! If a person who didn't know us looked at it, they wouldn't be able to tell who is in A9 and who is in BugLug. The one who has the strongest BugLug feeling about him is Hiroto though (laughs).
Issei: Yeah, he does (laughs).
BugLug's outfits are more like suits, and Hiroto's outfit is really similar to that.
Show: And since both Kazuki and Hiroto hang out with Kei (Baroque), they bring out the stoles. I wonder if this is what you cal Kei-ism (laughs).
Issei: During the photoshoot, Show talked to me quite a lot...... I didn't think that Show was such a friendly person. At first I imagined that perhaps he was a prickly person or a scary person, but he talked to me a lot. He is easy to talk to, so I was really glad!
Show: It's not like I am like this with everyone, but even with our juniors, if there is something to get excited over, I want to take that in and talk to them. To be honest, even at 2-man tours, there are also cases where you can't be frank with each other right from the start, so in that respect, I feel quite close to BugLug.
Issei: That really is important, after all.
Well, you did do a photoshoot together, after all. Even with promotion, normally they just place the two separate artist photos next to each other.
Issei: I don't really like that. Since you are playing together, I want to do the photos and promotion from scratch. I think if you don't show the attitude that "these two bands are doing an event together", then it's boring.
So to you, Issei, having a photoshoot with all ten members was a must for you.
Issei: That's right. For me, I'm really glad to be able to do an event with A9, so I want people to learn about us. For example, even to people who aren't interested, I want them to become interested in us using a variety of ways, so I want to take a group photo. Isn't it a waste if we just do a live show together and then that's it? In that respect, the way A9 makes their lives is really interesting. Even at their solo shows, their ideas are really detailed.
Show: Well, there was a period where we had a routine of releasing an album and then going on a one-man tour. To a certain extent, that is something rock bands do, but looking back on that, there were parts that we had stopped thinking about. That's why lately, we have come to perceive A9 as one concept, one piece of intellectual property, and think about how to make use of that. So that's how we come up with ideas like "Do people want to see an A9 live with only headbanging songs?" or "Do people want to see us playing with an orchestra?". That's why with this 2-man tour, we also want our fans to see BugLug, with whom we can sympathize with. So it's like come and see this "smoke signal" attraction that has our seal of approval!
So it's a bit different from the stance of going all out and trying to steal each other's fans.
Show: A band won't be able to last just by doing that.
Issei: I get that. In the past, I used to value that kind of attitude and my stance was to sink my teeth into their other band, but as expected, your approach to things change. This 2-man tour is something that we can't do by ourselves, and can only happen if we do it together, right? Also, because they are around, we are here, so it's no good if we just do this by ourselves, and there is no meaning if A9 just do it by themselves. The ideal is for both bands to do this together.
So what about the other band do you want your fans to see?
Issei: The people who come to shows in the Visual-kei scene just stand their in a daze when it's a song they don't know. It's a waste if they just stand there like a stone statue. So I want our fans to groove along to A9's songs! Because there are a lot of fun songs!
It's certainly true that A9 songs are easy to groove along to. Or rather, the songs are suitable for your body to naturally move along to. What do you want A9 fans to pay attention to in BugLug, Show?
Show: Isn't there a beauty of form in Visual-kei that our seniors have built up? Where they establish the mood, hype you up, and then it goes into the chorus? If the song itself isn't good, it's hard to deviate from that to capture Visual-kei fans with purely melodious songs or hard rock songs. I want our fans to get the essence of what is good about those songs. Also, even if they are watching live shows or video footage, you can see the band doing their best if you open your mind. That is something we really see as important, and I feel that in that respect, the roots of both bands are the same. So I want our fans to open their minds and experience their live stage.
We tend to think of a band doing their best as something that is only obvious......
Show: That's not necessarily the case. How should I put it? There are many bands that do things differently. To open your mind and lay everything bare is, to a certain extent, the way punk bands do it. But that is what I am after.
Issei: I understand.
That might be what you two, and the two bands have in common. By the way, is there something that you think of the other, or would like to ask of the other as a vocalist or lyricist?
Show: In general, the song comes first, right? Before writing the lyrics.
Issei: It depends on the situation. There are times when the lyrics come first. I always write down what I am thinking or feeling, so there are times when I think "Oh, I have to write a song that suits these lyrics". There are also times where I get the lyrics from the mood of the song, like "This song is really occult!". At the same time, there is also the artwork, so the image just bursts out into different directions, and I naturally get into the zone.
Show: So you are quite like an artist, where it's quite a spontaneous style. For me, I'm the opposite, and it starts with my own ego, saying "I want to express this!", for better or for worse. I love my fellow members, so I'm the type to focus on just how well I can express the kind of world that the members want to express to the people listening through a good performance. So first of all, I listen to the song over and over. From there, I interpret the scenery I get from the song, and consider how I can overlay that on the lives of the listeners. That's why I watch lots of movies and read lots of novels, and try to get input of the "true essence of the work". For example, in love stories, isn't it only emotional because they overcome obstacles, and there are people who get hurt and sad, but don't want to have people say to them "Chin up"? I capture that essence with my own interpretation and overlay that onto the member's songs. So I might be more like a kind of procedural lyricist. But I am sure to make it lyrics where you can picture the scenery. For example, I tend to like the lyrics of HYDE and so on.
To compare it to paintings, Show is more like the scenic painting type, and Issei is more like a Picasso or Dali. So let's have a question from Issei.
Issei: In your everyday life, what do you do that makes you think "Whoa, this is amazing!"? I mean apart from doing a live show or completing a CD.
Show: Recently, when I've been working out and drink a protein shake, I feel the most happy (laughs). But as I'm busy, just like I said before, I am proactively trying to get some input. Recently, I went to a solo photo exhibition of an acquaintance who had even won a prize for it, and it was really amazing! That person's main job is a hairdresser, but I told them "Quit your job and become a cameraman" (laughs). When I have even a little bit of free time, I do my best to try and go to interesting places. In the past, I was a hardcore gamer and never left the house....... Well, it's certainly true that games foster your imagination. For example, even if you look up at the sky in Tokyo, you can't see the stars, but in games, you can see the starry sky any time you want, the kind that I saw as a kid in Nagano.
Issei: Because you're in the world of virtual reality.
Show: Right. But at those moments when you think "I want to hone my sensibilities", it's different from going proactively going out there and getting it yourself. Lately, I've come to think that the action of moving on your own volition of wanting to hone your sensibilities for the sake of art is really important.
By the way, what kind of moments make you think "This is awesome", Issei?
Issei: There are plenty. Of course going to Disneyland, and as always, I like going to temples. Recently, I've gotten really addicted to watching pro-wrestling. I've always liked it, but when I actually went to a match for the first time in 10 years, I was like "It's crazy". The male pride and passionate souls and whatever are charming, but I find the strong entertainment value of it interesting. It has "showmanship" elements to it, and there are many things I can learn from it. Also, recently, I've been enjoying watching athletics, and I really do enjoy just about anything. Because I sink my teeth into whatever it is I find interesting.
Show: Issei's sensibilities is like that of Grimms' Fairy Tales. It's like a fairy tale, but there are scary elements, and in a good way, it's kitsch...... Since he has this twisted cute feeling, I think I'll observe him to see where he gets his input from. On this tour.
Since it seems like somehow, these two bands have an affinity, I'm sure the fans must have also been happy when this tour was announced.
Issei: Yes, they were really happy.
Show: Even already on Twitter, fans have sent me a list of BugLug song titles that they want us to sing during the all-member session. Like "Guillotine", "Saru", "Melancholic Candy", or "Grazie!!".
Issei: Hahaha! How terrifying (laughs).
Well, a practical problem is will there be an all-member session?
Show: As of now, we haven't announced anything, but...... it is a good opportunity. Here I will just say "Please look forward to it".
Issei: Well, just like BugLug lives, it's going to be a live in an enjoyable space, and I think people are going to see a different kind of BugLug they've not seen before. So I definitely do want fans to come see us, and I also want non-fans to come see us. No matter who comes to see us, you will definitely leave with a smile on your face!
Show: Because our stance is rather than saying it's a battle between A9 and BugLug, together, A9 and BugLug have prepared a place and opportunity to make you happy. So please look forward to it.
1 Issei suffered from head injuries after falling down stairs.
2 "Noroshi" means "smoke signal".

Happy 70th birthday to singer Lulu born in East Dunbartonshire November 3rd 1948.
Born as Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Lennoxtown, young Marie was brought up in Dennistoun, Glasgow, where she attended Thomson Street Primary School and Onslow Drive School. She lived in Gallowgate for a while before moving to Garfield Street, Dennistoun. At the age of 12 or 13, she and her manager approached a band called the Bellrocks seeking stage experience as a singer. She appeared with them every Saturday night: Alex Thomson, the group's bass player, has reported that even then her voice was remarkable. She has two brothers and a sister, and her father was a heavy drinker. At age 14, she received the stage name "Lulu" from her future manager Marion Massey, who commented: "Well, all I know is that she's a real lulu of a kid."
Lulu went on to earn her place in the spotlight in May 1964, with her standout version of The Isley Brothers' tune "Shout." At the time, she was part of the group the Luvvers. However, after a few more chart toppers, Lulu decided to venture out as a solo artist. In 1966, she went on a tour with the Hollies that included a concert in Poland, which made Lulu the first female singer from the British Isles to sing live behind the Iron Curtain, as it was then.
A year later, though, was when Lulu really made an international splash as both a singer and an actress. She appeared in the 1967 film To Sir, With Love alongside Sidney Poitier. She belted out the film's theme song (which had the same title as the movie) in a memorable scene. The song skyrocketed to No. 1 on the charts in America. Lulu also was joint winner of The Eurovision Song contest with Boom Bang-a-Bang, a top 20 song worldwide. She is the only female singer to have appeared on Top of the Pops in the shows five decades.
Back home she continued with more hits and TV appearances and in 1968, she hosted her own BBC 1 TV series, Happening for Lulu. In 1969 aged 19 she got hitched to Bee Gees band member Maurice Gibb, the marriage failed ad they divorced four years later. Lulu attributed in various interviews to Gibb's rock 'n' roll lifestyle and excessive drinking. In 1977, the singer tied the knot with hairdresser John Frieda. Their union lasted 20 years and produced one son, Jordan Frieda. Lulu has admitted in press interviews and in her 2002 memoir I Don't Want to Fight that she was also romantically linked to the late Davy Jones of the Monkees and the iconic performer David Bowie.
In 2008 Lulu was one of a number of Scottish celebrities that featured in the advertising campaign for Homecoming Scotland and in In August 2014, she opened the closing ceremony of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. At aged 69 in March this year Lulu joined the cast of 42nd Street in a 16 week run. She has said in the past she "will never retire" and sure looks like living up to that!
Here's Lulu singing the Bowie song The man who sold the world, apparently not a song liked by Bowie fans but the man himself liked it, and the public certainly did, reaching number 3 in 1974.

Do you know of anywhere were I could watch or get a full transcript of the Fedcon interview panel with Anson, Wilson and Shazad? They look like they're having such a good time!
Hi! I haven’t seen transcripts or full videos of the Disco cast Fedcon panels floating around yet, just snippets of fan footage here and there, and reactions on twitter. Quite a few are linked in con appearance roundup posts, gif sets and reblogs in my “Fedcon” tag. In my own posts I try to link to as many clips as I can without making the posts too long. :)
Anson, Ethan, Shazad and Wilson crashed each other’s panels and several solo panels became joint ones. Let’s hope some fan uploads them in full! I would also keep an eye on Fedcon’s own Youtube channel; they post full panel videos that are about an hour long, however it usually takes them a while to upload everything. Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes’ and other actors’ FedCon panels from May 2018 were only posted in April this year. We might also get clips of the cast interviews! I’ve already seen some of the other celebs.
I don’t wanna leave you completely empty-handed though, so here are a few extra cute moments I’ve found in FedCon fan fotoage, with links going to the specific timestamps:
- Anson grinning as he walks past the dancing Mistress of Ceremonies Lori Dungey (at 1:29). She is a Lord of the Rings actress, has attended RingCon frequently in the past, and now has MC duties at FedCon. :) Anson gave her a flower at the Closing Ceremony.
- A few cute bits of Shazad and Ethan (7:17) at the panels. 28:37 shows Fedcon’s legendary parties and the fan filming the footage says he was standing right next to Anson, Ethan and Shazad but his camera battery died, so he couldn’t get a clip of them. *o* So close!
- Wilson’s incredible dance movies at 3:34 and again at 4:11, I’ve giffed some of it but it has to be seen in full because Wilson is ♥. He also danced at his panel, and at the closing ceremony (1:27), and Ethan joined in with a few moves (1:42). This clip also includes Anson and Shazad. More Wilson dancing here and here.
- Wilson mouthing animatedly (34:37) while his German Discovery voice actor Benjamin Stöwe does the dubbing for him. Hilarious!
- A bit of Anson and Ethan’s panel at 34:38, and a short moment of Anson, Ethan and Shazad standing on stage at 0:25.
- Wilson’s story about being cast on Discovery
- Opening Ceremony: Shazad and Ethan saying “Ich liebe euch” (”I love you”) and “Lebe lang und in Frieden” (”Live long and prosper”) to the audience, much to their delight. I’ve giffed this but footage continues with Anson arriving on stage and sharing his “Germany is a pre-warp society” story which we didn’t have in this camera angle before.
- Bonus: A great Stamets cosplayer (20:19) won 3rd place at the costume contest! (51:13) And there was a really cool Mirror Universe Tilly cosplayer, too! (16:09)
Also, here’s Anson’s upcoming con schedule from my blog, he will be in Australia in three days, and he’s recently been announced for DragonCon with Ethan!
Tumblr media
Any new panel clips available will be posted/giffed/reblogged asap, with links to the sources. Just keep in mind, posts with twitter links in the caption (text area of a post) don’t show up in the tags on tumblr mobile due to tumblr’s rules, only in the desktop version of the tags. For the post to become visible on both mobile and desktop, I put the links in the ‘Source:’ bar below the post instead, but the ‘Source:’ bar only has room for one link, so I can’t always use it if I need to credit more than one twitter user for a pic, video, tweet, etc.
In such cases bloggers have to use the caption and the post gets hidden from mobile users, unless they see it on their dash via a reblog or going directly to the poster’s blog. If you’re only using mobile to browse/track the tags on tumblr, you might be missing on some Discovery content because not everything shows up due to tumblr’s automatic blocking. It’s their way to combat fishy/adult links that have infested the site. Mobile users see less content than desktop users, basically, and only a handful of sites are whitelisted, like Youtube and Instagram, which are ok to link to in caption for now. Twitter no longer is. Just a heads up! Some folks have been wondering why their posts weren’t showing up. It’s not your fault, it’s just tumblr being poopy.
Sorry for the length, thank you for writing me and take care! Enjoy the videos! ♥

Janet learns the lyrics to the Pina Colada song. Janet learns the lyrics to the Pina Colada song. On the movie the sweetest thing who sings the pina colada song its a womens group?
In The Number Ones, I’m reviewing every single #1 single in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, starting with the chart’s beginning, in 1958, and working my way up into the present.
***
At least in retrospect, the ’70s must have been the wildest, most motley, most all-over-the-place decade in the history of popular music. Some genuine musical revolutions either started in the ’70s or matured during the decade: Hip-hop, punk, disco, funk, prog. But if you look at the ’70s through the lens of the pop charts, as this column does, you see excitement and tedium locked in a constant struggle for dominance throughout the decade, with novelty sneaking around the outside and getting some jabs in.
So really, the ’70s ended the only way they possibly could’ve done: With a badly-sung, infernally catchy soft-rock ditty, an infidelity-themed story-song that ends in an O. Henry twist. Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” has popped up on movie and TV-show soundtracks countless times in the past four decades; it has earned its place within our shared consciousness. And yet I can’t imagine ever being in a situation where I would actively seek the song out, where I would want to hear it. But then, I was three months old when the thing hit #1. Maybe I’m not supposed to know what motherfuckers were thinking.
Rupert Holmes, the man who wrote and produced “Escape” and who thus owns the chart transition from ’70s to ’80s, had been part of the pop-music dream factory for a decade when he got to #1. Holmes was born in the UK, the son of an American Army officer and an English woman. He spent the early years of his childhood in the English village of Northwich and the later years in the New York suburb of Nanuet. Holmes’ parents were both musicians, and Holmes went to the Manhattan School Of Music on a clarinet scholarship. Pretty soon after he finished school, he went to work as a pop-music professional.
Tumblr media
Holmes was working as an arranger in the late ’60s when he joined the Cuff Links, an anonymous bubblegum group that also featured Ron Dante, the lead singer of the Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar.” When the Cuff Links broke up, Holmes recorded a song called “Jennifer Tomkins.” The single, released under the name Street People, peaked at #36. In 1971, Holmes wrote a cannibalism-themed joint called “Timothy” for the Pennsylvania band the Buoys, and that one peaked at #17. Holmes also wrote ad jingles and scored a little-seen 1970 Western called Five Savage Men. He was in the game.
Holmes released Widescreen, his solo debut, in 1974. Before 1979’s Partners In Crime, the breakout album that gave us “Escape,” Holmes knocked out four solo LPs. None of them sold, but those records helped Holmes build a name for himself as a writer of funny, irony-infused story-songs. Barbra Streisand was a fan, and Holmes wrote songs for her and for the absurdly popular soundtrack for the 1976 film A Star Is Born. Holmes didn’t score a charting single of his own until 1978’s “Let’s Get Crazy Tonight,” which peaked at #72. Private Stock, the label that released “Let’s Get Crazy Tonight,” went out of business when the song was still on the charts.
Holmes got the idea for “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” one night when he was flipping through The Village Voice, the newspaper that once employed me. (“Escape” is the second #1 hit built around classified ads; it arrived eight years after the Honey Cone’s “Want Ads.”) Inspired, Holmes hatched the narrative of a bored couple who, while attempting to cheat on each other, accidentally go out on a blind date with each other. As originally written, the chorus started with the line “if you like Humphrey Bogart.” While he was getting ready to record it, though, Holmes decided that his own songs had too many references to older movies, and to Bogart in particular. He changed “Humphrey Bogart” to “piña coladas” at the last possible minute simply because he didn’t want to let down any of the real Rupert Holmes heads out there.
If you stop to think about “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” for even a second, it’s a pretty nasty little song. The very first line is this: “I was tired of my lady/ We’d been together too long.” The song’s narrator is unhappy with relationship, but he doesn’t do anything to end it. Instead, he sneaks around behind his girlfriend’s back, falling for a sentence in a classified ad. The person described in that ad seems hopelessly basic. Likes: Fruity mixed drinks, rain, champagne, beach fucking. Dislikes: Yoga, health food. But apparently the guy is basic, too, since a few lines of small-print newsprint text are all he needs to ditch his relationship. He takes out his own ad, responding to the first, and he includes grandiose verbiage about planning an “escape.”
He does not successfully execute that escape. It turns out that the girl who took out that classified ad is his own girlfriend, who is just as bored with the relationship as he is. They meet up at an Irish pub and instantly figure out exactly what just happened. The song presents this ending as a happy surprise. In interviews years later, Holmes says that the guy was supposed to be an asshole, and a passive one. The girl, who is also attempting to cheat, was at least the one with the wherewithal to instigate the whole episode. Holmes was hoping that they’d both realize how much they had in common, that they’d recommit themselves to each other. This seems unlikely.
Movies And Tv With Pina Colada Song Rupert Holmes
I have questions. For instance: Where does this couple go from here? They both know that they can’t trust each other. They also know that they don’t really know each other. They’ve got all these completely elementary preferences that they haven’t communicated. After that initial rush of recognition, how does the rest of this relationship look? How long do they stay together? How are they not incredibly pissed off at one another from the moment they spy each other across the bar? How are they not, at the same time, both consumed with guilt upon getting caught? I don’t like this couple’s chances.
I don’t know if this is a good story, but it’s good storytelling. I don’t much like the characters or where they end up, but Holmes sketches out the whole narrative in a few quick words, never losing sight of his own melody. This doesn’t change the reality that the actual music behind this story is exactly the kind of wack-ass soft-rock pablum that I cannot stand. It’s got an awkward, clumpy beat that Holmes recorded with two drummers. (Holmes co-produced it, and he says that the studio band played sloppily that day, so he used the 16 bars he liked the best and looped them.) There’s watery piano. There’s a processed-to-death guitar lead. There’s a groove that can’t stop tripping over itself. And then there are those vocals.
Holmes isn’t a bad vocalist, exactly. He a classic ’70s singer-songwriter guy, a conversational speak-singer. But man, I do not like what happens when he cranks that voice up and hits the hook on “Escape.” The hook is, to be fair, instantly memorable. But this is not always a good thing. Holmes hits that upper register, and I just wish I was someplace else. I don’t even know how people functioned when this thing was all over the radio.
Holmes managed one more big hit after “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).” “Him,” the single’s follow-up, was another story-song. This time, Holmes sang from the perspective of a guy who figures out that his girlfriend is cheating. “Him” peaked at #6. (It’s a 4.) Holmes kept putting out albums into the ’90s, but none of them hit. He also went back to writing songs for other people. “You Got It All,” a ballad that Holmes wrote for the teenage Tongan-American Minneapolis-based Mormon family band the Jets, peaked at #3 in 1986. (It’s a 6.) Britney Spears, an artist who will eventually appear in this column, covered it on her debut album. Get ready to be incredibly depressed: Holmes wrote the song for his 10-year-old daughter. Before the song took off, she died of an undetected brain tumor.
I don’t know how you bounce back from something like that, but Holmes did. After “Escape (The Piña Colada Song),” Holmes has had more success as a storyteller than as a musician. In 1985, Holmes wrote The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, a Broadway musical based on an unfinished Charles Dickens novel. It won five Tonys, including two for Holmes. Since then, Holmes has written more than a dozen plays, many of them hits. He also created Remember WENN, a drama that ran for three season on AMC in the late ’90s, and he wrote all 56 of its episodes. He’s published a few books, too. The man can write, and the best thing about “Escape” is that you can tell that right away.
But Holmes is a whole lot more famous for “Escape” than for anything else he’s ever done in his life. He’s pretty funny when he talks about it, too. In a 2003 Songfacts interview, Holmes said this:
I have a feeling that if I saved an entire orphanage from a fire and carried the last child out on my shoulders, as I stood there charred and smoking, they’d say, “Aren’t you the guy who wrote ‘The Piña Colada Song?'”
Perhaps Rupert Holmes would like to escape “The Piña Colada Song.” So would I.

Raised in Hawaii Jack Johnson was the son of a famed surfer and even tried to have a go of his own on the waves. Unfortunately an accident that involved teeth being knocked out and stitches being required kind of halted that dream as he was sidelined from surfing for a while. It wasn’t too long after that however that his musical talents started to become his thing and picked up a guitar and started strumming out a few songs that he’d thought up. He did this throughout college, joining a band and jamming as they performed here and there during their time together. Johnson’s big break came in 2000 however when he not only produced the soundtracks for a couple of films but he tried his hand at making them as well. You could easily say this man is quite talented but it might still be an understatement.
Here are a few of his songs as used in TV and movies.
5. Glee – Bubbletoes
Glee is one of those shows you either liked or didn’t think about. It wasn’t even a matter of not liking if it you didn’t watch it, as the energy and verve of the show was enough to make it interesting. But if you weren’t into the whole song and dance routine then chances are you wouldn’t dislike it but just wouldn’t watch it since the whole idea of not liking the show seemed kind of petty since it was so upbeat a lot of the time, or at least seemed like it. In many way Glee kind of took a lot of people back to their experiences in high school since there are quite a few people that can remember being in similar clubs.

4. Sense8 – The Sharing Song
This show is something else and it was one of Netflix’s top prospects when it first came out. The ability to connect with people miles away due to a special quality that links them all, and the knowledge and skills that can be shared via that link is pretty cool, but it could cause some serious problems as well. You can’t help but think that some of the people that are connected would embrace this after a period of confusion, but others would seek to block it out since this is the kind of thing that humans would rarely ever be able to get used to since it’s not considered natural or normal.

3. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – Escape (The Pina Colada Song)
Two Pina Coladas Song
Walter Mitty is a man that no one seems to take seriously since he’s kind of a nobody when the film starts, though he’s far more important than many people would care to realize. Working at Time magazine where he’s been for so long he’s been taken for granted and treated like a shadow on the wall since he’s a very quiet and unassuming person. But when an important negative for the last issue of Time goes missing he has to go and track it down by tracking down the photographer. In the end however he finds that it was with him the whole time, he just didn’t know where to look. The adventure he takes though is what was truly important as it finally got him to open up to the world.
2. Curious George – Upside Down
Several generations have grown up with Curious George since in truth he’s been around for a very long time. As a children’s story he’s one of the most classic tales out there and is the kind of story that you’d want your kid to watch since it’s a very touching and educational show that offers a lot of fun and engaging activity that kids will want to emulate. Sure George gets himself into trouble now and again, but that’s the beauty of the design. Kids can learn how they can get themselves out of trouble as well since George is all about having fun but he’s also about problem-solving. This is just a great show for kids and a bit of nostalgia for adults.
1. Jack Johnson – Middle Man
For all his talent and all his skill at music Jack Johnson is still a very diverse man since he’s not only a musician, but a father, a husband, and an environmentalist that spends a lot of his time balancing his life out between the different roles he’s given himself to play. So far in life it seems like he’s done just fine and has kept everything as it should be. He’s a very open person about his life in music, but keeps a lid on the private lives of his kids and family, which seems like one of the best ideas since quite honestly it’s no one else’s business. He’s definitely a family man and someone that cares a lot about what he does.
