Novel verses Adaptation
Dinghai Fusheng Records and Guardian -- no spoilers, just thoughts
(At time of writing I am on chapter 34 of Dinghai Fusheng Records and chapter 16 of Guardian)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have watched the adaptations for both Dinghai and Guardian and enjoyed them quite a bit, to the point I am interested in reading the source material. However, I am struggling to make it through Dinghai and I thought I might share some of my thoughts.
Dinghai has both a donghua and manhua and I was so curious about the story that I consumed both a while back. Now that I'm finally reading the novel I kinda wish I had only watched the donghua. The manhua is gorgeous don't get me wrong, my problem is that the manhua followed the novel closely enough that I'm bored while trying to read it. sweatdrop I could perhaps do some searching, scrolling, and skimming to find where the manhua left off and start reading from there. But I've also already read the first book and that's the part of the donghua/manhua that I remember better. So currently, I'm still planning on reading the novel, it just feels a little bit of a chore until I get to the part I've not seen adaptations of.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the opposite end of the spectrum I started reading Guardian a couple nights ago. And I am LOVING it. So far I'm about halfway through the first book (and not looking forward to having to wait until January for volume 2's release). There's a lot that is similar to the beginning of the drama. But there's also a lot that's different. The characters still feel like the ones I fell in love with in the drama but because the drama changed the setting to be a weird sci-fi twist it's got enough changes going on that I'm still enjoying it. I love spooky supernatural and horror stuff. I love mythology and fables. I am so excited to learn all about what's going on with this version of the story. There's also a good bit of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan flirting and teasing each other even from the first time they meet. Finally, there's more powers and artifacts. Zhao Yunlan in the drama mainly had his special gun and his wit. But Zhao Yunlan in the novel has talismans and bottles to ghostbust spirits into and more!
This kinda reminds me how when the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime ran out of source material and Arakawa Hiromu told them to make up their own thing. The OG anime goes and does some WILD things but in doing so it made its own story. And Arakawa was able to finish her story in her own way. There's something to be said about having an adaptation be just that -- an adapted form of the original. By having Dinghai's manhua so closely follow the original novel I'm struggling to consume it. I certainly have been guilty of complaining when I go see a movie based on a book I read and then get frustrated at the differences. But I think when it's done right it can follow what's happened for me and Guardian. The adaptation got me just interested and curious enough to look into the book.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Would I recommend Dinghai's donghua? Yes
Would I recommend Dinghai's manhua? Yes
Would I recommend Dinghai's novel? Yes* (with the caveat that I have not yet finished reading it -- depending on how it ends I may have other opinions)
Just maybe not all three 😅
Would I recommend Guardian's drama? Yes
Would I recommend Guardian's novel? Yes* (with the caveat that I have not yet finished reading it -- depending on how it ends I may have other opinions)
If you liked the drama I recommend the novel. If you liked the novel please know the drama is in my opinion some cheesy junk food and still enjoyable so long as that's your thing. I think the actors (in particular the ones for Zhao YunLan and Shen Wei) are so wonderful at all the extra things they put into their performances -- the tender looks, gentle touches, line delivery, little details to show just how gay and in love these two are (even if they can't smooch on screen).

Weekly summary or something
Here’s some insight to the past week’s endeavours. You’ll see… I read quite… a bit… I guess?
SVSSS 3: I kid you not I cried after posting my review just now. That’s how tired I was of that one.
Manhua on BiliBili that I’ve read:
Dragon Prince Yuan
How’d I get the Heroine’s Script?
I Want to be a Baddie
Don’t Say You Love Me
Trapping the Foxy Doctor
I Want to Hear You Say that You Like Me
Demon Apartment
Pixiu Eatery
I Picked up a Blademaster?
How’d You Two Become a Couple While Gaming?
We’re All Transmigrators, So Why Am I a Criminal?
National School Prince is a Girl
I’ll Get My Deskmate to Hit You
Pscyhomania
I Ship My Rival x Me
The Martial Emperor’s Life After Seclusion
Dinghai Fusheng Records
The Return of the Sect Leader
Mr. Snail
Scream Queen
Fall in Mistaken Love
Chrono Go
My Little Secret with the Demon Lord
Saved the Public Enemy by Mistake
The Road to Immortality
I can’t really share my thoughts on all the manhua, but a few I’ll share some thoughts on.
I really like How’d I Get the Heroine’s Script? It’s a kind of fun and relaxing read and it’s the one Sunday update I look forward to.
The plot thickens in I Want to be a Baddie and I’m looking forward to next weeks update.
I finished I Want to Hear You Say that You Like Me in the sense that I read to the last episode before its cancellation. I already knew it was cancelled, but I wanted to read it to the end nonetheless. It’s a shame it ended on quite the cliffhanger and without knowing the identity of Joker.
While I'm certain if the manhua adaptation of We’re All Transmigrators, So Why Am I a Criminal? is better or worse than This Villain Emperor’s Gotta Charm the Male Lead to Survive, I don’t doubt Yi Yi Yi Yi’s stories have potential if in the right hands, so How’d You Two Become a Couple While Gaming? after finding out that’s the same original author. Out of the three, I like this the best and I’m usually not a huge fan of esports settings.
One of my favourite things with I Ship My Rival x Me is actually reading the comments. I’ve read the novel, so I already know what’ll happen, so reading what those who haven’t read the novel thinks will happen is a joy. The art is also very soft and it’s a feel-good story for me.
My favourite Tuesday update is Scream Queen and a dose of bad bitch it just a good start of the week (even if it ends up being… uh… Tuesdays) and her brother is just as much fun to read about in this current arc. I feel like her boyfriend got yeeted in favour of the brother for this arc and I'm not complaining. Not that this queen needs any man, which is why I love her.
I guess I'll class that good enough. My primary reading will be SVSSS 4 since I finished the review of 3, so, uh, wish me luck?

A note on the Bilibili comics situation lest my optimisim gave anyone hope:
nope, it increasingly sounds like the announcement DOES include the app, it's just worded badly and for whatever crappy reason they decided not to tell people who exclusive use the app (my guess, the reason is money: people won't top up coins if they know the app is going away).
Reasons I say this:
The official Bilibili Discord has announced that the app is closing.
I found out someone I know through fandom does translation for the international app, and while I don't have permission to give disclosures of what they said (they did NOT say the app is closing, to be clear), what they told me also supports the conclusion that the entire thing is going away.
My hopefulness and careful reading has not been rewarded; sounds like they're just very bad at giving announcements. Why am I not surprised?
Anyway, definitely is time to read up on anything you were hoping to finish and save your faves. Here's my read/reading list. Some of these I'll DEFINITELY be looking for alternate sources for, and I may pay to finish Kiss the Abyss before the app shuts down at the end of February.

...or it's time to suck it up and start just reading stuff in Chinese. I'm not really good enough yet but when else am I gonna learn?

My recent reads ( to those who are looking for something to pick up ) ; I’ve been in a slump for a while and could only finish fanfics so i’m pretty happy that i’m finding stuff that grab my attention.I added links to the Manhua too cause that’s how it usually starts for me. I like a Manhua, it’s not complete— so I look for the source Material.
• Golden Stage : Novel
The usual court politics and it’s actually softer than what the plot makes it out to be. 🤍 This is also considered short, with 77 chapters. ( + 2 for epilogue). enemies to lovers.
Tumblr media
The notorious imperial court lackey and the meritorious military general were well-known for their mutual dislike, a pair of arch-enemies set in stone. Who could have foreseen the unexpected change in the winds of heaven: the general injured on the battlefield, both legs disabled, and even forced by the emperor to marry his nemesis. With one marriage edict, two people with mutual hostility are forced to marry and live under the same roof. Yet after these long days together, they come to the realization that this fellow is not truly devoid of any saving grace/unattainable and high out of reach.
• Madness of the Heart : Manhua | Novel - upto chap 120 the rest are here (chap 186) but it’s MTL so i’ll just wait for the first link which has better translation.
If you liked Body Electric or Swallowing the Seas then you’d enjoy this. Modern setting & solving cases. The photo I used looks sweet— but this story covers some pretty serious issues. 120 chapters done and i’m waiting for the rest. Manhua and Novel sequence of events don’t match. The Manhua adds scenes from when they were kids which is in a separate prequel novel all on it’s own. so keep that in mind.
And Mingshu’s love for his gege. lol. 😂😂😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon completing a year-long training program with a special operations team at the Ministry of Public Security, Ming Shu returns to Dongye City to discover that he has a new boss. Many people said to him, "Ming-ge, the new boss is such an enigma. Don't let him harass you." To which Ming Shu replied, "...that guy has been harassing me for years. You guys just don't know it." Ever since Ming Shu returned to the bustling metropolis of Dongye City, strange murders have been cropping up one after another. An unemployed man suddenly goes berserk in a cafe. A mysterious incident occurs at a long-abandoned playground in the middle of the night. Underneath the body of a man who met a tragic end, a second corpse is discovered to be buried. Captain of the Serious Crimes Division, Ming Shu, and Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Xiao Yu'an, join forces to investigate and solve all these bizarre cases and more.
• Dinghai Fusheng Records: Manhua | Novel
I suggest going for the Manhua first if you’re like me who finds it hard to get into Novels that have lots of characters and unfamiliar settings in general. Anyway. I really like the premise of this story! and the pairing is a SLOW BURN. I love me some slow burn! 🔥 This is the only one I haven’t finished yet, currently on Chapter out 40 but I’m loving it so i’m adding it on this list.
Tumblr media
Amidst the Silence of All Magic in the Divine Land, Mara is about to descend. In order to prevent the destruction of the Divine Land and save all the people, Chen Xing, the last exorcist, embarks on a journey to release the sealed spiritual qi of heaven and earth – only four years remain. The road ahead is full of thorns. Watch this cute little koi Chen Xing and the moody and grumpy Protector Xiang Shu, together with numerous people with distinct personalities in their group, working together to turn the tide again and again!
++ some short novels I read. modern setting. no serious conflict and just a good time ✌🏼 really short reads too, 40 chapters.
TATTOO - I wish someone will make an AU of my OTPs following this story. Yes. The MC falls in love with a ~Mysterious~ tattoo Artist. That’s it. I love this trope so I got hooked.
On the night of Xiao Ke’s thirtieth birthday, he shared a table while drinking. The person he shared the table with was a cool man who fit all of his aesthetic desires. It was practically love at first sight. He was thirty; he had reached that age where he was no longer the awkward twenty-something youth. He would pursue the one he liked without hesitation, no questions asked.
FIGHT THE LANDLORD, Fall In Love - I read this cause it’s the same author as Golden Stage. Arranged Marriage. Idiots to Lovers.
Two eldest young masters who looked down on each other were forced into a blind date. Each discovered that the other was the immoral scoundrel who had poured cold water or thrown rotten tomatoes on him during a game of Fight The Landlord two days prior. Now what? Well, let’s secure a partner first and figure the rest out later.
I did an Manhua/Manhwa rec here before if anyone is interested. ✌🏼

Any dinghai fusheng records fans out there I feel like I'm the only one liking the story. 😅 I'm so bothered for the scarcity of content found in the net. I hope my fanart makes a contribution.
Tumblr media
Just a brief background all of this started when I decided to explore the bilibili comic app. I got curious about the manhua because the artwork resemble wangxian. I wasn't expecting that I will crave for more. I decided to watch the donghua but for me the donghua lacks the sweet moments of ShuXing. Well it can't be help because of censorship. I've been rereading the manhua over and over because I thirst for more content. I also search for the novel but unfortunately I couldn't read it as of the moment because the discord group is temp unavailable. Anyway I discovered there was an audio drama of this novel I hope I can listen to all the episodes. I have a lot of questions about the novel but all of this can be answered if only I can read the rest of the arcs. Anyway at least I'm happy to discover another danmei aside from MXTX novels. I know people are into Erha but I heard that the story is heavy so I'll slowly get into it via the manhua but for now I love dinghai fusheng records it somehow fill my longing from Wangxian.
