something. about. the horror of being sent on an impossible (death) quest and obligations and hospitality politics. the trauma of not having a home, and then the trauma of being in a house that becomes actively hostile to you, one that would swallow you whole and spit out your bones if you step out of line. all of this is conditional, your existence continues to be something men want gone.

it's about going back as far as I can with the perseus narrative because there's always a version of a myth that exists behind the one that survives. the missing pieces are clearly defined, but the oldest recorded version of it isn't there! and there's probably something older before that!! but it's doomed to forever be an unfilled space, clearly defined by an outline of something that was there and continues to be there in it's absence.

and love. it's also about love. even when you had nothing, you had love.

edit: to add to the above, while it's not about Ovid, because I'm specifically trying to peel things back to the oldest version of this story, Ovid is fine. alterations on the Perseus myth that give more attention Medusa predate Ovid by several centuries. this comic is also not about those, either! there are many versions of this story from the ancient world. there is not one singular True or Better version, they're all saying something.

Ok but in a Shen brothers au, there's simply no way Shen Jiu would've been normal about Shen Yuan. ( In these aus I'd rather keep SY a transmigrator, or else he'd be subjected to the Airplane logic and laws of the world from the beginning, and that would've changed him in ways my tiny brain cannot be bothered to conceive rn. Also, I love the existential horror brought upon by The System. But that's beside the point.)

Shen Twins au? This is the au in which SJ is the less normal I think. He would've been obsessed with SY, would see him as a half of himself. Would think they're not a full person unless together. He'd envy Shen Yuan's kindness, he'd resent everything that made them different and relish them at the same time. He'd protect SY and would hate him in the way he hated himself. Would be possessive of SY in the way you're of your own body. Would be willing to share YQY, he'd share everything with him and feel offended if SY wanted to keep things separate. SY falling for LBH would cause him a mental breakdown and might never forgive SY.

Older brother SJ? Over protective, violent in a way animals are when teaching their young— casually but not really harmful. Picture a kitten biting a slightly smaller kitten's ear for being annoying. He'd be envious of SY getting better treatment for being younger, but would despise anyone who treated SJ better than SY. Thinks SY owes him love, and would be constantly afraid of losing said love. Possessive of SY in the way you're of your things. Unwilling to share YQY with SY, and of sharing SY with YQY. Would try to kill LBH for coveting SY and would see SY marrying LBH as the most stupid idea ever and WOULD get in the way. Would still talk to SY after the wedding, but only if he comes alone.

Younger brother SJ? the most normal of the three scenarios. Obviously possessive of SY, but in the way children are of their parents. Jealous of everybody who talks to SY, and would only feel safe with him. Willingly shares SY with YQY. Would be absolutely disgusted by SY falling for LBH. And would react like a well intentioned but very homophobic parent; cordial to SY, but would not aknowledge LBH's presence and would forbid PDA in Qing Jin Peak
