Rage+Hope, and how they work for Razer
Tumblr media
[ID: Razer from the GLTAS episode “Regime Change” looking surprised at his red ring as it flickers out from the blue energy, and Razer from his Young Justice episode wearing both red and blue rings.]
So we’ve been presented with two important pieces of information about the red and blue energies.
Saint Walker says that "Rage is the orphan child of fear and despair."
The blue energy is seen to de-power the red lantern energy
and yet,
Razer in "Blue Hope" is able to break through and use his red power, and is (as of the end of his YJ episode) using both together.
Plothole? Nah. Let's break that down, and why this works.
Tumblr media
[ID: Saint Walker from the GLTAS episode ‘Lost Planet’: “Rage has no real power. Or taste, for that matter. It’s the orphan child of fear and despair.”]
We all love Saint Walker, but he’s not entirely right here. Not about all rage, anyway.
So, “fear and despair.” In other words, scared and hopeless, the opposite of the green and blue energies. And that's what powers the red lantern army, they're focused on the past. It’s their despair at all they’ve lost, their fear of being powerless again. They've lost hope to make anything better, and only want to make others hurt. It's that vengeance they keep going on about.
And the Razer we first meet is in line with that. At the end of the pilot, he tries to goad Hal into killing him. As of episode 7, he's still willing to throw his life away for a small chance to kill Atrocitus. At the end of the episode, he even gets his chance... But if he takes it, they'll all lose their chance to escape.
It's his vengeance vs his crewmates’ lives, and he chooses them. He's started to have faith in them, that there will be a future beyond this moment, where they'll have another shot at stopping Atrocitus, and maybe they’ll even get to live to see a future after that.
Over the course of his journey, and due to his crewmates’ influence, Razer loses his despair. He stops being suicidal, he starts hoping for a future, one that includes Aya in it somehow.
Tumblr media
[ID: Razer from the GLTAS episode ‘Blue Hope’: “There are many kinds of anger. In this case, I believe my rage was righteous.”]
In Blue Hope, Aya is attacked by a Manhunter and in response Razer's rage flares, overpowering the blue energy. At the end he tells Saint Walker, “I believe my anger was righteous,” and that he now knows what his path is—it’s with Aya. And that's the difference between his new and old rage. When Aya was attacked, it wasn't despair or hopelessness he was feeling. It was “how dare you.” He still wasn't sure what he was hoping for at that point, but as long as Aya would be there, he was hopeful for the future. You could even argue it’s possible the hopeful blue energy was boosting his rage at that point too.
And then all the way at the final battle, where he tries to stab Aya but his construct disappears, he's back to despair, but that can't power his rage anymore. He doesn't want to cause pain. His hope and rage are tangled by that point, he can’t go back.
And then we see him 4 years later. He’s still viewing his rage as a curse to be locked away and he’s had no progress on his quest with Aya. Despair is back. But again, it can’t power the red ring. He isn’t linking despair and rage anymore, he’s a different man. It’s only when Metron reveals he’s been fucking with him all that time that he’s able to access rage again.
When Razer hurts Forager, I’m not totally sure what he sees, but I think A) it reminds him that this is a person he doesn’t want to be anymore, someone who thoughtlessly causes destruction for its own sake, and B) seeing the Foragers together reminds him of him and Aya.
So in the end, he chooses hope, but doesn’t give up rage. And he uses them together to defeat Metron. The righteousness is back.
And you know, I really like this for him. Anger doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you let your anger consume you, like Razer had in the beginning, like the rest of the Red Lanterns, that's when it turns toxic. But anger can drive you forward too. I've been half-joking that hope + rage makes spite. Like, Fuck it, I’m going to believe in a better future despite what the universe has done to me.
tl;dr—Razer's rage is no longer powered by "fear and despair," which is what the blue energy cancels out. It's righteous, and he remains hopeful for a future.
Anyways, those are my thoughts! I’d welcome others :D

GLTAS Rant
Currently in a slump over GLTAS, I can’t stop watching it. It’s just perfection, I am blind to all flaws, of which there are none because it’s so good. The characters, gorgeous, including those added solely in the show (Razer, Aya). I’ve seen all too many shows where they try to add new characters to the universe by means of the show and it just doesn’t work. The character sticks out like a sore thumb and doesn’t quite mesh with the other characters. In GLTAS they’re integrated wonderfully. Razer seems like a beloved side character that was just never given the spotlight before (like Tomar-Re), and Aya is a loveable new character that actually brings something to the table. The first season is great with tons of twists and turns that actually add something to the story, unlike those stupid twists that can also happen where it’s predictable and/or completely out of left field.
I love Saintwalker’s little arc, it’s so good and he’s such a peaceful guy, and him helping against the Red Lanterns is a little predictable but it’s done in such a way that it’s satisfying. The whole bit where Razer teleports to Oa using his love for Aya destroyed me. I love their puppy love, budding relationship even though Razer is a complete idiot most of the time. I’d criticize Aya but she’s perfection, and also a robot who’s learning through experiences so I can’t really fault her for not understanding stuff because she’s asking and no one is giving her a straight answer.
Kiliwog is a gem, I’m not a fan of Hal, but I don’t think anyone is really is. He’s like a placeholder, textbook MC. My personal favourite Earthling lantern is John Stewart; probably because I grew up with him in JLTAS. Salaak and Tomar-Re are my favs and always will be and Razer and Aya have completely obliterated my brain in terms of love and the capacity of love. Like, the whole second season Razer is just trying to figure it all out, and trying his best to sort out his feelings and Aya is just being way too direct. I guess that’s the only criticism I can give about her, and even then I mean, it makes sense why she’s that way. But still he probably acted the way he did at times because she was being to straightforward and he wasn’t prepared with an answer because he hadn’t had time to think about it, which is obvious to the audience and despite this it’s still easy to dislike his actions because Aya is so wonderful.
The pacing is pretty steady despite it being a tad rushed in season 2, I believe because it was being cancelled (so sad R.I.P), and I wish the show had developed to the point of introducing the Indigo lanterns, and seeing more of Larfleeze, and seeing Sinestro become a yellow lantern, and seeing more of Razers journey. Because, ok, in Young Justice as happy as I am that there was a whole episode about Razer, it didn’t really add anything? Like yeah woohoo he’s a blue lantern, we already knew that was happening, yeah he’s still angry, no duh, he’s a living being, he has multiple emotions, yeah he’s a little bitch who wants to give up. That’s been his character since forever. Like it was a fun watch (more painful than fun it was so good to see him again my heart was hurting) but nothing much happened as far as him finding Aya, yk, the thing that becomes his big main goal. At the end he goes right back to it, probably because the writers didn’t want to do anything too drastic but still. Like progress, a rumour about her being somewhere? Anything? Just hope from a feeling, like okay whatever that’s pretty cool but a little unsatisfying to me.
Bless this show I hope it gets rebooted (as is started up again, not changed and destroyed like what happened to Teen Titans).

#ElfMakesPlushes Status Update
With the Lion Loafs for the DragonCon gathering finished, I want to throw out a quick update of what to expect incoming on the plush front.
#1. Additional plush work is temporarily ON HOLD. DragonCon is in 18 days and I’ve got costume work/repairs to do, travel snafus to finalize, packing, and of course actual paying-a-living-wage job and other adult life things to handle.
#2. The DragonCon Gathering plushes are for a name-drawing-style giveaway AT the DragonCon gathering. If you cannot attend the gathering, you are not eligible to win one. I’m sorry.
#3. I’m still a ways away from reopening plush commissions. I have two plush commissions still on the work queue before I can go off schedule again, and that does not include the Galra Tribble and Shay designs I got permission from the artists to turn into real fluffy versions. I also have things I want to make for myself, like completing my Lion Cub set, a mini Lotor, 1984 Sven for a friend, VLD Shiro, a giant black Lion, a new GLTAS Aya design, etc. I don’t know if I’ll do those indulgence plushes before or or after I reopen commissions (still shooting for October there). Months of working on a schedule for other people makes me want to make things FOR ME again.
#4. The idea came up on twitter, and is now on the work docket for post DragonCon & Commissioned plushes. I’m going to design and look into having made either charm or enamel pin versions of my Voltron Lion Cub designs. I’ll post pics once I have designs together. If I can find a good place to have a limited run made, I’ll put them for pre-order on storenvy or tictail.
#5. Reminder that plush making is a hobby for me. It’s why 90% of them are done as gifts or trades with folk. The few commissions I do are basically priced to recoup material costs, with a little added for time/labor. That folk are “eagerly” waiting for me to open up for commissions (which only closed because I was overbooked with promised trades/gifts) is just baffling and a little intimidating.

Top 5 superheroes?
So it turns out “superheroes” is a pretty ambiguous category, if you think about it too hard. For purposes of this list, I’m including only costumed crime-fighter types, not edge cases like Buffy or Aang (who are, of course, spectacular characters). Also, for the record, I have had almost zero proper exposure to marvel superheroes. I know this is weird, but my experience with superheroes is 100% the various DC cartoons and maybe one Spider-Man cartoon. So, uh, that is reflected in this list.
1) Aya, who I’m using as a stand-in for the whole GLTAS crew because otherwise they would probably take over this list. GLTAS is an exceptionally well-written superhero show, IMO, and a big chunk of that success is the complex characterization. Razer and Hal are honestly equally strong contenders for this spot, and all of them are heroic and inspiring in different ways. Aya is notable for her intense desire to help people and be useful, which ultimately causes problems for her, but is still a very admirable core desire. She’s also endlessly curious and interested in constantly exploring. 11/10 very relatable spaceship friend.
2) Raven, from the first Teen Titans cartoon. You may have noticed that I am a very emotional and frequently very depressed person, but that I at least try to carry on and do good stuff, and not let my crazy emotions stand in my way. That’s basically my reading of Raven’s character. She’s afraid of herself, afraid that she’ll do something bad and ruin everything, but her response to that fear is to devote her life to helping people, insofar as she can. Robin calls her the most hopeful person he knows at one point, because even when she doesn’t believe things will get better, she keeps trying. I related to her a lot as a kid, and as I get older, I keep finding different reasons to appreciate her.
3) Starfire, not because I relate to her so much, but because she’s a wonderful contrast to Raven. Starfire is loud, strong, awkward, frequently confused, super intense, but also clearly a feminine character. Unlike Raven, she’s not ashamed of who she is, and is perhaps too eager to trust people and believe the best about them. She’s a cool character in her own right, but I also really love her relationship with Raven, and when I was younger it meant a lot to me that the two female characters on the show were so different without the difference being “this one is feminine and this one is not”. They’re both feminine, but they process their emotions differently, have different levels of suspicion for outsiders, and have different understandings of what it means to be part of a group.
4) Batman. Not any specific version of Batman. Just Batman in general, everything he is and can be. I always used to list him as my favorite superhero when I was a kid (I was worried adults wouldn’t know who Raven was), and I still feel like he’s a pretty cool character (especially when he has ADOPTED CHILDREN), so he should probably get a space here.
5) So this is only based on a handful of introductions to him, but I really like the Flash? I know there are multiple Flashes (just like there are multiple Green Lanterns), and like Green Lantern I like him partly because of his power set and partly because of–I think I’m thinking of Barry Allen in terms of personality? He always seems so eager to help people, and it’s easy to give him interesting conflicts that aren’t necessarily adversarial. Seriously considering watching his live action show, if I ever actually have the time and energy to start up a new TV show.
Honorable mentions: all the male teen titans members (disqualified bc they, too, would take over this list), Superman (what an upstanding guy), Superboy from YJ, probably also everybody else from YJ in all honesty
