study participants needed!
UPDATE: thank you everyone that's taken part :) the study has now closed, we got over 200 participants!! thank you so much
Hi, I'm a second year psychology student doing research on how queer people view others within the LGBTQ+ community.
Its just a short task and survey that should take 5-10minutes to complete, any participation is appreciated! Thank you!
Link (including info about our ethical aproval): https://run.pavlovia.org/Wake/public-iat/

Extra clarrification on some things under the cut :)
In this study we use the words "(gender) conforming" to mean anyone thats not part of the LGBTQ+ community and "(gender)non-conforming" for anyone that is. This was suggested to help us code the results better, but we now know that this may have overcomplicated things.
The first part of the study involves an IAT, for some people they will be put into the "positive, conforming" conditioin first and others will be the "positive, nonconforming" first. It may seem scewed, and some people have bought up that it can seem bias, but that is just how this type of test works- it has been used and tested in many other studies and has not shown internal bias.
These are the main two points people have bought up, feel free to ask any other questions about this research though I will be happy to try and answer as much as I can :)

Imagine Fantasy Bakugou meeting fallen Angel reader(as in you were captured and your wings were cut off by horrible people) by finding your abandoned body bleeding out.
So he carries your body to his camp to fix you up. At first he allows the Bakusquad to help you recover but he catches Denki eating in the medical tent with your bandaged up back right there so he kicks all of them out.
Everyday he comes in 5 times a day, once in the morning and right before bed to change your bandages and put on some cream, the other three just to make sure your doing fine.
Once you do finally wake up, it takes you a while to relearn how to walk without your wings. Bakugou and the bakusquad are amazed about how quickly it takes you to learn their language(as it’s actually a plus of being an angel).
The group sleep in two tents, the boys and girls tent.
If you are feminine presenting, then Bakugou soon becomes anxious not being able to fix you like he use to. If you are masculine presenting then he will have mornings where he wakes up cuddling yoh and quickly pulls away.
Either way, he has fallen for you hard and didn’t even realise it.
He offers you to travel with them back to the Barbarian stronghold(main camp/base) and promises that they will protect you.
Depending on your interpretation of (non-Christian)Angels, your wings may or may not grow back. If believe they will, then Bakugou will ask you oh so very nicely for you to stay with him, even after your wings grow back. If you think they won’t grow back, then he asks I’m not as nice of a way but still wants you to stay with him.
He loves waking up in the middle of the night and seeing you lay beside him, looking so wonderful and dreamy. Kisses your forehead most of the time.
Is very aware that you don’t have as much of body muscle as normal humans do, so he tends to just carry things for you. He grumbled about it, but never complains.
Loves it when you slip your hand into his. His heart beats so fast but will never admit it.
Will ask permission to braid your hair in a barbarian style, but if you want it to be only be your angel culture braids, will learn how to do it just for you.
If(more like when) he finds the people who cut off your wings, he put them into a torture area in the barbarian camp and will dine in front of them as they scream in pain.
He takes you to them as says it’s a gift to you from you as he kisses your neck and shoulders. He will only let them go if you forgive them. But if you are still recovering or your wings don’t grow back, I have a feeling you won’t be forgiving them for a long time.
He calls you his dove, but never caged dove. Though he wants you all to himself, he would never deny you the chance to fly away if that’s what you wanted.

you ever just go about your day but your brain is haunted by Margaret Atwood whispering, "Male fantasies, male fantasies, is everything run by male fantasies? Up on a pedestal or down on your knees, it's all a male fantasy: that you're strong enough to take what they dish out, or else too weak to do anything about it. Even pretending you aren't catering to male fantasies is a male fantasy: pretending you're unseen, pretending you have a life of your own, that you can wash your feet and comb your hair unconscious of the ever-present watcher peering through the keyhole, peering through the keyhole in your own head, if nowhere else. You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman. You are your own voyeur"

By the way, has anyone else noticed the similarities between these three ships?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BECAUSE I HAVE AND I CANNOT PRETEND TO BE NORMAL ABOUT IT ANYMORE
(unhinged gay screaming and rambling below the cut)
You know, "serious, deadpan gay has their heart melted by a nerdy, chaotic disaster bisexual with childhood trauma." Alternatively, "not enemies but initially on opposing sides before sun-coded breaks down moon-coded's walls and then subsequently become best friends that are closer to each other than most other people."
To start, the similarities between Lan Zhan, Cas, and Shouto:
Deadpan, cold, aloof, serious, intimidating, takes things literally
Initially driven by rigidly-defined principles/goals before having their world view altered by the other half of their ship, which in turn causes them to become more uncertain of themselves and what they want, but recognizes that they are happier and better-off for it now than they were before
They were raised in an unforgivingly strict environment where there was no margin for error, causing them to become cold and jaded in a way that covers up the fact that, at their core, they are fundamentally kind and good in a way that they don't even realize but desperately want to be
Socially awkward introverts that hate everyone but This One Person
Come across as very intimidating but are actually very soft
Surprisingly good with kids
Familial issues/trauma
They can also be identified as the "fell first" half of the relationship, and most likely fell within one of their first few interactions with their love interest
Youngest siblings
Has an obsession with a specific animal (Cas likes bees, Lan Zhan likes rabbits, Shouto likes cats)
The undisputed powerhouse of their respective series that everyone recognizes as one of, if not the strongest members of the cast
Everyone thinks they're super wise and mature, but they are actually the pettiest bitches you will ever meet
Gay and entirely obsessed with This One Person
They all have small, private conflicts about allowing themselves to Feel. They were raised to compartmentalize, repress, and conceal-don't-feel; push everything down until you are perfect and untouchable. Then their love interest comes along and upends everything and finally allows them to Feel, but because they were taught to repress everything, they don't entirely know how to do that yet, so, with the help of their love interest, they slowly heal and learn how to be more human and less like the image of untouchable, god-like perfection they were raised to be (metaphorically for lwj and Shouto, but literally in Cas's case)
(I was gonna say, "they all belong to the mile-high tall club", but then I realized that only applies to lwj and Shouto because Cas is technically shorter than Dean, lol. Though, I guess you could argue that his true form (without his vessel) is taller, but, like, c'mon)
Incredibly dry, niche sense of humor that's only really funny to This One Person
Lan Zhan and Shouto both have mothers that they love, but who were forced into an unwanted, loveless marriage by their father that led them to be increasingly isolated from their children until resulting in a psychotic break that ultimately destroyed them and drove their husbands to imprison them (Rei in the mental hospital and Lan Zhan's mother in the Jingshi)
Unrepentantly earnest and blunt with their thoughts
Completely whipped for their partner
Now! To the disasters! Wei Ying, Dean, and Izuku:
Friendly, excitable, extroverted, sunshine-y/always smiling
Near-unparalleled geniuses in their fields of interest that like to experiment and test things
Childhood trauma
The powers that be have decided that they are undesirable in some way or another, that they are a waste, disposable, an acceptable sacrifice to make in the grand scheme of things. They have all struggled with feelings of worthlessness, and have all arguably struggled with self-hatred at least once in their lives, and even if they don't actively hate themselves anymore, by and large, they do not recognize that they have value just as they are, that the only value they have lies in what they can do (or sacrifice) for others. None of them have much in the way of self-esteem or any sense of self-worth.
At their core, they want to save people.
They all have themes of being different from the negative characatures that society tried to make them into.
Extremely talkative and come across as annoying to most people
Likes kids
Reckless and jump head-first into danger at the drop of a hat
Carry feelings of guilt, have a tendency to cast blame onto themselves, takes responsibility for things that aren't their fault
They want so badly to do good, and they choose to be kind in a world that deemed them unworthy of it
Good relationships with their respective maternal figures/caretakers (Dean and Izuku with their actual mothers, and Wei Ying with Yanli)
Wise-cracking smartasses that give off dumbass energy
Bisexual
Inadvertently ends up adopting a small army of children
Deflects their traumatic experiences with jokes
Has that one female best friend that is definitely a lesbian (wwx and Wen Qing, Izuku and Ochako, and Dean and Charlie)
"Oh my God, (Cas, Lan Zhan, Shouto)! You can't just say things like that!"
They are the caretakers, the protectors, but they so rarely let themselves be cared for by others. Their respective love interests are some of the few people they feel comfortable being truly vulnerable with and will let take care of them
Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms™
In particular, I noticed a lot of uncanny similarities between Wangxian and Destiel specifically, especially in the themes and arcs that exist in both the couples and the individuals

Let’s face it. 2022 was a challenging year for LBGTQ rights not just in America but around the world. From Governors making it illegal to talk about Queer and Trans or offer support to Queer and Trans students all the way to taking Trans children away from affirming families. Making Trans healthcare harder to downright impossible to obtain. And just in part making lives for many Queer and Trans youth difficult if not impossible.
For a long time many Queer and Trans youth have found solace in fandom spaces. Whether is for tv shows, movies, books, comics and manga, and more. In these spaces they aren’t just a queer or trans kid. They are either a great artist or an amazing fanfic writer or an talented Cosplayer.
Fandom can be Inclusive and Queer! That’s what we are here for today. We are here to announce the creation of the “No Bait Just Queer” charity fanzine this year.
No Bait Just Queer is a multi fandom fanzine full of Fanart Fanfics and amazing cosplays serving the following fandoms
RWBY
Miraculous Ladybug
DC Universe
The Owl House
Hazbin Hotel

Genshin Impact
My Hero Academia
Jujutsu Kaisen
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

ykw actually? the obsession with sources that are "appropriate" for use in academic spaces is just an excuse to devalue non-dominant knowledges/wisdom/forms of knowing and also a way to prevent us from accurately analysing phenomena we know are real.
it's a way of controlling what we can talk and learn about, and how we talk and learn about it. it's a way of ensuring that The Academy can still dictate the language we have to use, the information we can share, and the ways we can share it. i fucking hate it.

Hermeneutical injustice operates in caste through the lack of available language or conceptual frameworks to describe and articulate the experiences of people from DBA communities. Dominant cultural narratives and discourses do not have adequate means to capture their experiences and this makes it difficult for them to express themselves or be understood by others. Also, most of the scholarship on caste oppression is mostly written by the oppressor castes with a savarna gaze that portrays the oppression in a completely different light. The knowledge and cultural practices of oppressors are always considered classical, and the cultural and artistic products of DBA are relegated to the bottom. The discomfort and suffocation that a DBA individual feels when they enter savarna dominated spaces like academia or media is mainly due to the erasure of identity and cultural shock they experience by not being able to connect or articulate in the language or assimilate into the culture of savarnas. The way to battle hermeneutical injustice is by questioning the language, culture and scholarship created by savarnas, and expanding the vocabulary to be able articulate the experiences of DBA by more inclusion of marginalized groups into academia, media, journalism, law etc.

A bit of a long rant following the latest disappointment with the project. Sorry, I had to get it all out. It's all under the 'Keep reading'. As always, thank you for your patience and support.
I must confess I am starting to lose faith a little bit. I am starting to think that, as good as the idea is, it is perhaps unfeasible, not so much because of logistics, but because everyone in Classics is just too isolated for this to work. I mean literally like an insula, an island -- everyone is working on their own, thinking on their own, doing things on their own etc. Yes, I am being a little bit resentful here, but also self-critical. I literally nicknamed myself 'lone-rhapsodist'. I always thought I was a loner, but now I realise, we all are. We are all islands -- the only thing we share is that we are not alone in being alone. It kind of sucks, to be honest. And I don't know what to do about that. I can reach out to all the people I want, but in the end, it doesn't matter.
I go back to this post I wrote a few days ago and ask myself the same questions. What am I doing this for? Is it worth it? What do I want to get out of this?
I don't know, I guess I just wanted to be part of something that makes sense. Something like a community. I thought, if I create a community around Classics, something that is a link between academia and the public, people will be interested in it, it will increase opportunities for both inreach and outreach, it will encourage people to put themselves out there and try. Try try try. How many times do I have to try? I'm the one who struggles to put themselves out there. I'm the one who feels like they don't fit in. I'm the one who needs the pat on the head, the blessing, the go-ahead to do things.
What is the point? I am literally reaching out to academics, using my real name, putting myself on the line, and for what? I am sure if I keep trying something will happen, but the issue remains that, if I cannot build a community interested in what I have in mind, then I will have to find one that is, and build the project around them. Yet as it turns out, these communities do not exist. These publications, they call themselves a community, a forum etc., and then they're nothing of the sort. Words have meaning. Why call yourselves something that you're not? What does that say about you, about the subject, about academia as a whole?
It's almost like the whole concept of community is alien to academia. They'd rather have a landscape of ivory towers than a palace to share. And the palace itself is just a metaphor for how, even in their best attempts at building a community, they are still exclusionary. Why do we need the walls? What do we need the moats for? We could have a happy realm, for everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, social status etc., yet here we are.
I am being asked about my publications. I am being asked about attending conference dinners. How do you not understand that these are the very things I am trying to move past from? How do you not understand that these are the very barriers I am trying to break down? It's like everyone woke up with this idea that we can be inclusive without dismantling the institutions that perpetuate elitism. It's like everyone is keen on the idea of reforming academia until you start talking about reforming systems like publications, conferences etc. Suddenly, they all forget about progressivism and want to hold onto their privilege.
I am not trying to be an anarchic here. I completely reject beliefs such as anti-intellectualism and anti-academicism. But if you have systems that do not work as well as they could -- the culture of publish or perish, the fact that in-person conferences are inaccessible to most people and could/should be held online etc. -- then surely you should do something about it. But you cannot claim you believe in change if you do not also agree that, for example, someone should not need to be published or have a big fancy title next to their name to be able to produce a valid idea. And definitely, someone should not need to be rich in order to participate in academia. You know, the basic stuff. I know it's easier said than done, and that not everything is as easy to implement as I put it, but surely we should start from holding beliefs which are supportive of these fundamental ideas, and then we can go from there.
I don't know. I know I'm not alone in feeling like this. But then again, it's easier said than done. I can rant all I want about things, and then people can like it and reblog it and we can all share a little moment of misery. But then if I try to do things, and nothing happens, I am allowed to feel at least a little bit disheartened.
I have said before that if I cannot build a community like I have in mind, or find a community and build the project around them, then I will simply stop and either join a community that already exists, and keep doing what I had in mind for the project on my own. I suppose it would be something like a Classics helpdesk, somewhere where people can send asks asking for advice on how to develop their ideas further, or even send submissions about work that they would like to get feedback on but do not feel comfortable sharing publicly. Of course, if you ask or submit anything anonymously, I would have no other choice but to respond publicly, but if you did it using your username and/or messaged me directly asking me to respond privately, then I would be more than happy to do so.
I mean, that was basically the whole point of the Discord server -- join the thing, share your idea with us, get feedback and go develop it further. Has it taken off yet? No. Do I mind? A little bit, yeah. But not so much that I want to delete it yet. I like the idea of the server because, even if it's dead, there's always someone who can join and share their idea and get a response and be happy about that. I think it's important -- heck, I think it's an essential part of society. Yet here I am, preaching to the choir -- or in the desert… I am still not sure which one it is, or if there even is a difference. I mean, I never expected the project to be more than a side thing, but I did want it to develop into something more. I cannot help but feel deflated.
Maybe I am asking too much. Maybe I am not. Who knows? All I know is that there are still options left to explore, and I will keep going until I have exhausted all of them. I will see what my lecturer from uni has to say. Then perhaps I will look into Reddit. I do not even know if Twitter is worth exploring. I cannot think of anywhere else.
The only other option that comes to mind is the advice I was given to get in touch with the Women's Classical Caucus. I think that is interesting, but I really need to think about it. Perhaps that lecturer from uni would be able to help me with that. Honestly, at this point, it's worth a shot.
With that said, the question remains. "What do you want to get out of this?". I keep rotating that in my mind. And I'll keep doing so, until I find an answer. Till then, the quest continues.

Hi! I am researching for a paper about the supernatural and spiritual experiences. I've been gathering responses from my very limited social circle and their acquaintances, but that has led to some bias in my results. It would be very interesting and helpful if you could fill out / share this anonymous survey! Thank you!
