When motivation feels like ‘no time for imagination’
Believe me when I say I know how easy it is to do everything but sit down and start writing up your latest literary piece. It can feel like there's a million and five things that are more interesting than writing. The key to staying motivated on your task is to make a personal connection with what you're doing. It helps to look at writing as a reflection of your own personality. There are so many ways writing can be transformed to fit into a story, it’s just about finding the narrative that fits your interests.
Tumblr media
Everyone’s an author written by Beverly Moss, et al, presents several rhetorical methods that can help create your narrative, my favorite being:
Tone- sets the stage by directly connecting your writing intentions to the paper. You are in control of how you want your voice to sound, just make sure it fits appropriately to the assignment.
Use of language/specific diction- Using elevated diction can help enhance the validity of your writing based on the writing situation. Conversely, incorporating more conversational language or ‘slang’ into your work can help connect better to certain audiences. Depending on the prompt and purpose of your writing, be sure to pay attention to the type of language you are using.
Stylistic choices- Design and appearance of our writing is just as important as its content. Whether you’re handwriting a letter or typing up a resume, the stylistic choices you make can be a determining factor in capturing your readers attention. Changing the font size, color and spacing are all easy ways you can experiment with different styles along with adding graphics and media insets. Be sure your stylistic choices match the attitude of your piece.
With the help of each of these methods, I am able to keep myself interested in the writing I am working on. Believe it or not but fantasy is also a big part of staying motivated to write. By immersing yourself in some aspect of the writing you can better connect with your prompt or purpose and feel more engaged in the process.
Hopefully you’ll be able to relate some of these methods into your own writing that will help keep you motivated on the task at hand!
(If you have any questions, feel free to comment and I’ll be sure to respond!)

Term Evaluation (part 1)
In these two terms I have created:
Character art - which were made in both Procreate and Photoshop. Sometimes I would start with drawing the line art in Photoshop and when it came to adding colour I would save the line art as a JPEG or PNG and move it over to Procreate.
Tumblr media
Key Design - this was one of our first projects to do, it was tasked as our summer project work. I made one for each of my characters in my story using Procreate. Each one was designed to fit the characteristics of the character.
Pixel Art - We used very small pixel sizes as that is the best way to draw in pixel art. They were made in Photoshop, I did find they pretty hard to make as I'm not used to that size of pixels when drawing.
Movie Reviews - The right section we used to draw a character or object that connected to the topic of genre of the movie it self. Illustrations were made with pencil and I sometimes lined then with a lining pen. Then we scored how we thought about the characters, settings, music/surround sound and story out of ten. With then a few written sentences of how we felt about the movie and other things.
Clay seal mold + Plaster seal - Making the clay version was sort of difficult at times as I wasn't sure at times of how I wanted it to fully look. I did decide to make a texture in the middle around the snake shape to sort of make it look like the sand dunes you'd find in a desert. We then made a wall around the edges of the seal, so that when we poured the plaster in it wouldn't spill out. Mixing the plaster was interesting to do, as it was a first time thing and with it being a thermal reaction you had to tell when it was reading to be poured in the mold by putting a part of your finger in. When I got to that part I found out that I had a reaction to it, which may have been a very slight allergic reaction but am not sure. I was able to complete the task anyway, but wore gloves instead. When hardened, it got removed from the mold and any excess pieces of clay were also removed.
Skull drawing - We drew a normal head drawing first and then traced over the head with a skull design with tracing paper. Digital line art done in Photoshop. This was simple with the first part and then did get a bit hard as I've never drawn a skull before. The line art was sort of easy as I used the paper version and traced over it.
Tumblr media
Designing monster from words - Photoshop used for lining and coloured in Procreate. As a class we all picked words which fit with either a part of an animal, colour or shape. Once we had finished creating that list, we then made our own version using all the words from the list. I did find this quite hard, as I've never really done something like this and am more used to when given just one worded or theme prompts for drawing. For the features I tried my best to incorporate them all, but it was slightly harder when it came to the shaping of things.
Tumblr media
Taking parts of different monsters from films and creating my own version - Drawn in Procreate. We were given the base layers in Photoshop, for the mix matching of the creature. I then drew the lineart and coloured it in Procreate. I found it quite fun, as I like inventing new things but also taking parts of what I love and taking other things and putting them together.
Tumblr media
Character sheets - All were made in Procreate, the ones I made only have a double sided head-shot of the character and the information of the characters. Making them are useful for when it comes to having information and a visual of a character. In a way there is an enjoyment to making them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Story playlists on Spotify - This was quite simple as I used music which were in my liked but also music I saw fit well with the atmospheric parts of the stories.
Using Moodboards for drawing - We were given a few different mood boards of different parts of animals and objects. We were told to take a few and merge them into one thing, such as an artifact. I took two which I deemed were simple to use and would fit well together. Starting with a rough sketch of the concept and then building it from there on top of it, with finer details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gifs - The first was very simple as I only made the colour of the eyes change. It was quite easy to make as it was just a looped animation. The second one was more difficult as it was a big setting area, whilst I made the clouds move in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Custom Brushes in Photoshop - It was a progress which I didn't really understand at first, but it was fun to do as I was able to have something of my own in the end.
Tumblr media
Headers - Making this was sort of like making the custom brush as I was able to decide which font to use and if I wanted it to have a border or not and the colouration of it too. It was slightly more easy to make, as it didn't feel much of a tedious task.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super Sculpty ear - It was hard at first to get it look like a proper ear. It looked more from fictional rather than it being from real life. I was able to get help from my tutor though, and was able to make it look more realistic. Now the finished result is better than the first result in my opinion. Making it used the sculpty and modeling it into the right shape, and sculpting tools.
Sticker design - As a class we all made a mushroom person design each. It was quite an easy task with drawing and making the full design but one of our tutors were left with printing them out onto sticker paper. We only recently got them, (at the time this is posted, 18/12/23).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super Sculpty mold for seal + Resin seal - This is like the first time with the clay and plaster but instead with super sculpty and resin. I found this easier, as the resin mixture had to be poured in by our tutor as it hardens to quickly. But the super sculpty mold was a lot smaller than the clay mold.
Patterned design for character card + Information back - Started off with one design and then with photoshop and also turned it into a custom brush. The pattern was created by making it an overlay and then putting it through symmetry fill and changing the directions it would go into, to get the right pattern wanted. When making the information backing I used the pattern that was made and then boxed it so it would act as the border whilst the writing would go into the boxed area that was inside it. It was hard when making the final decisions for each bit, but after consideration it couldn't be better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paper weathered envelope - Making a normal envelope was harder than I thought, so I decided to make it in the shape of the box one that is given on Chinese New Year. This worked a lot better for me, as it brings the flare of interest and love that I have for Asian culture into my work. The box one was smaller than the other but a lot easier to make.
3D models using magic voxel - This was one of my hardest projects, as it was a very new thing and I didn't think I have the true eye to draw properly in 3D. But once I got over the hurdle of the first attempt, it was just seeing it from a new eye and learning the better techniques to get it the right way that was needed. It was still difficult but there was progressed that was made.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Character art for cards - At first thoughts it was going to be a full-body drawing but in the end turned into a bust drawing. There wasn't the time to make it a full-body drawing and I don't think I drew the sketched anatomy properly at first. I do prefer it as a bust though, and in another day there will be a full-body drawing of Keabi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Handle for stamp + sort of art doll snake which is adjustable - Not much work was done on the actual handle of the stamp, instead it was spent upon making the snake that wrapped around it. It was interesting to learn all the new techniques needed to make the actual head and how to keep everything in proportion, but in the end it came out beautifully. There was some hardship when sewing the felt and fur together at the end of the making process, as I didn't know what stitch to us all the time in the end I got my hands on it and had a completed sewn body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comic pages - These were fun to make, at times it did remind me of PMVs, as they sort of work in the same way. With it being a slower process of animation and only have small parts of movements to show where the story is going.

Week 3~ Performance Lab
(Tuesday)
The presentation on semiotics and character design had emphasis on symbolism and portraying narrative within character design. so much can be told about a character through their costume and is a great tool to portray ideas or points.
We decided to focus on costume and materialising our character designs throughout this session as we had decided we wanted the audience to wear birdlike masks to mimic a flock of starlings. This would be so that when the time comes in our performance for the audience to roll the dice to select the ending, it is obvious that they are acting under the villain's authority. Amie took the role of doing the main designing and creating of the masks as she had a keen interest in this, the key points we wanted her to include in the design was colours to match a starling/ my villain character and for them to be obvious with being a birdlike figure. After making a colourless prototype, she drew up a colour version on procreate which gave a stronger indication, combined with the physical prototype of what the final masks will look like. Upon reflection with this design we decided that the coloured lenses would not be suited to our performance as we are already making colour a major focus and this would take away and make distinguishing between each different character on the combined mannequin more difficult.
After researching our options for coloured lighting, we settled on using projection mapping for our combined mannequin. None of the group has experience with projection mapping so we agreed that Hemza should look further into its possibilities and how we can incorporate it in a way that suits our project. We didn't know if we were going to use AfterEffects, HeavyM, or another software to project onto our mannequin.
As we needed an alternative for the light projection for the Sluagh/ villain character, Sarah gave us some LED strip lights that are connected to an Arduino and can have different colours programmed into them. We tested these lights under our different white materials to see what effect they would give off and decided they would be a great fit for what we were trying to achieve. We also knew we needed to experiment with the wing prototypes and find the most effective/ sturdy way of creating wings for the villain as they are the focal point of the character and are on the larger scale, covering most of the torso so will need sufficient structure.
Lara had retrieved two mannequins for us to use so we could gain the measurements of each and start prototyping what we wanted to have each mannequin look like using white card. Our plan was to use different white/translucent materials in our final outcome to give different affects however we wanted to create a card base first so that it could be used to experiment with projection mapping too. Below is my final design of what the villain's costume, minus the wings will look like. we chose to go with a white colour with this mannequin as well as the other mannequin to create a likeness between the two and incase we decided to project some sort of colour, we didn't want the colour of the characters outfit to impact the desired effect. here is the design I drew in procreate:
Tumblr media
All storyboards have been completed as of this day so we have a definite outline of what needs to be done and how our final performance will look.
(Wednesday)
While we had a workshop with Lee on white card models and projection, I also had a printing induction downstairs. Before I left for the print workshop, Lee gave a brief talk on the different methods, scale and ideas we could incorporate into our own projects. it was very insightful and inspiring to see what we can achieve on a smaller scale, bringing ideas to life without investing too much time or effort into the models. It also brought the realisation that shadows could be a great way to add to our set design and to add more discreet prompts/ layers to our story.
Doing the print workshop induction was very useful as there was a lot of health and safety to cover. While I don't think we will use any of the print workshop's resources for this performance lab, it will no doubt come into use within the course as printmaking is something I have some experience in and am interested in developing my skills.
After returning to the studio after this workshop, I had a hand off with Zoe as she had begun making the prototype skirt on the mannequin from white card and masking tape. I was then to experiment and learn how to use HeavyM to explore projection mapping as Hemza was originally meant to come in to experiment himself but didn't make it in. Within the 30 minutes spent going through the software's tutorial, and exploring, I had a very good base knowledge of the softwares capabilities and had a simple outcome that matched exactly what we were trying to achieve. One of the main things I was struggling with was translating what was on the computer onto the mannequin in the exact positioning required because the computer was off to the side and I couldn't see the whole of the mannequin. As a small fix to this issue, Lee had already set up a camera streaming whatever it was pointed at to a TV monitor and I pointed it at a straight on view of the mannequin so that I had a better point of view while working on the projection. As we still have the majority of physical making that needs doing for our performance, we decided as a group that using grad+ will be essential to get all of our work done In time for the performance.
(Friday)
We spent the morning making final adjustments to our presentation roundup as this would be delivered to the group at 2pm after Lara and Sarah were back from their meeting at 11:30am. Once this was completed, we made great developments with HeavyM and learnt how to use video instead of the classic settings available. This was exactly what we were looking for to create as similar projections as we could to our designs. We also finished the prototype of the combined mannequin, minus Hemza's keys, so that we could try differentiating the different characters. (images below).
Our 10 minute presentation on what we had completed/ what point we were at in our project went decently. Lara and Sarah gave us feedback and encouraged us to investigate audience further and what their role will be within the performance as well as how we want them to react. I think it would be good to visit this later on in the project's stages to ensure we get exactly what we want.
We then made a final to do list of what was to physically be created over grad+ week in order to complete our project and added all of our notes, images and resources to miro so that they could be accessed by the whole group.

Dear Sanditonites and influenza quarantees: given the current fervor for in-door pleasurable activities, @sanditoncreative comes before you today to propose a new and exciting adventure. We promise clean, virtual and healthy in-door fun for all who join.
Embark on our horse drawn carriage to Sanditon. From the moment you take your seat you have 50 days to come up with 50 creations to pass the time until your arrival at our luxury accommodations courtesy of Tom “The Worst” Parker. To help you along, you will receive a tourist pack of 25 prompts that will need to feature prominently within your work to which you can add 25 of your own.
This is open to both fanfiction writers and graphic artists alike, although the rules will be slightly altered to fit the two mediums.
Graphic Art:
I’m not sure if this format is something you’ve come across on Tumblr before now but it used to be somewhat popular on livejournal. The challenge was made for icon creation in particular but for the purposes of tumblr, we’re going to be extending that to gif sets, moodboards, fan vids and any other graphic art format you would like to use. If you want to do a mix of icons, gif sets, moodboards, that’s also permitted.
The gist is you have 50 days to come up with 25 creations fitting your chosen pack prompts as well as 25 more of your own choosing.
Fanfiction:
Sanditon has a very thriving fanfiction community so we really wanted you guys to participate in this challenge. However, given the different medium, we need to alter the goal somewhat.
Your goal for the 50 days is to incorporate all of the 25 prompts in your work. The formats can include drabbles, short stories, poetry or WIPs and the prompts can be titles, chapter names, feature within the work or just set the mood of the piece. The catch is you need to create 10 different pieces in 50 days. Whether they’re chapters in a WIP or standalones, that’s up to you.
In order to give you even more artistic freedom, we’ve settled on two different tourist packs of 25 prompts each for you to choose from. Remember, though, that you need to stick to one of the two. You cannot mix and match so choose wisely.
The tourist packs are:

@ us at @sanditoncreative
tag your post with #50 ways to sanditon
You can choose to post all your work in one go at the end of the 50 days or to do it in increments of your own choosing (daily, weekly, etc.). If you are going to do it incrementally, include in your posts the prompts you’ve used from your tourist pack so everyone knows your take on them.
In case you want to participate in the challenge and you don’t have a tumblr account, you can send us a message to our inbox and we will host your work directly on our blog.
And now for the fun part …
Tumblr media
Once the 50 days are over, you’ve completed the challenge and you have finally arrived at your luxury accommodations at the spectacular Sanditon terrace apartments (fully fire insured! We promise! We swear!), as gratitude for your wonderful work you will receive a specially made icon and moodboard for your enjoyment with a Sanditon inspired theme of your own choosing.
If you have any questions about this challenge, please feel free to drop us a message and we will respond as quickly as we can. We know this is a new-ish format so it’s bound to create some confusion.
Our public coach leaves every day and we hope to see you on board! Join us! It will be fun! We promise potential sightings of naked Sidney Parker and Young Stringer’s hat upon arrival!

Progress update (August 2019)
Posting Break I’m taking a hiatus from posting on AO3, ffnet, etc until at least 2020. There are a lot of reasons for that, but the two main ones are to reduce stress and focus on non-fic things. I might be less active online in general. BUT, that doesn’t mean I’ll be gone forever. In fact, I’ve already started working on new projects, just at a slower pace.
Collaboration/prompts/challenges One thing I really miss about the RP community is how fun, unexpected things can happen during collaboration or when prompts get thrown at you. Besides the WIPs I talk about below, I’m also still really interested in: adopting a dead fic and finishing it (but I need the author to tell me themselves so we can work out the details ofc), fulfilling someone’s plot idea that they love but can’t be bothered to do themselves (ditto), being given a challenge, or doing a direct collab i.e. we write an outline together then each do alternating chapters/POVs/whatever.
For any of the above, I’m interested in the following fandoms: Naruto, Kingdom Hearts, My Hero Academia, Fullmetal Alchemist, Mob Psycho 100, ATLA/LOK.
Current WIPs I have four fics I consider to be current WIPs, in the sense that they’ve gone beyond the ‘idea’ phase and I’ve actually put down outline material and/or have written words for them. I’m only working on them when I feel like it, which is why I am ok with having so many–it’s very laid back. I just put down ideas when I get them, and slowly gather material that way. It’s much more fun and stress-relieving to do it that way for now, and when I’m ready to buckle down once again, I hope I’ll have a lot to work with. (:
The four are listed here in order of how developed they are as of today.
A Naruto fic–Ame Orphans/Akatsuki origin story canon re-write; current working title “we wished on a sky too small for stars” bc I’m basic so shut up. I need to think of a better way to describe it, but it’s not exactly an AU, more like their story told in my own way. I’ve always really liked retellings that have their own plots even though we already know how it ends, and I’ve always wanted to write one like that. I’m throwing out most of the canon timeline and non-manga canon to do my own thing and extrapolate like hell. This one already has a more or less complete outline, minus some gaps in the middle part. But like the others, I’m just letting ideas for it come float toward me as they will. I haven’t written any prose for it yet, aside from some pre-existing drabbles that will be incorporated.
A Naruto fic–the next installment in the Windmill series, a sort of in-between fic that I’m currently calling Windmill 2.5, because I’d like it to be a lot shorter than the others in the series. (As in, I want it to be 100k words or less. We’ll see what actually happens.) I have a lot of outline material for this one, and a good amount of prose already too, but it’s not very organized yet. Probably because this is a sequel, ideas for it pop into my head as scenes or dialogue more so than the others. I’m not concerned with how they’ll all fit together just yet. Still taking it easy. This story is 3rd person like the others, but with Obito as the main (perhaps only) POV character. I’m super into the themes behind this one.
A Kingdom Hearts fic–a complete revamp/reboot of my ancient fic, Twilit Destiny. I have ideas for it, but very little written down aside from the old story itself. My plan is to figure out the conclusion I want, then re-write the story to match (and to give it a badly-needed update). I’m not going to stress about making it match canon, since canon is wacky anyway. Redoing it will just be for fun. My only concern is that I’ll start having too much fun, and end up making it massive. RIP.
A MP100 fic–So. I have done this in the sense that I got a stupid idea and then did a freewrite on it and had so much fun I can’t stop thinking about it. This was not a serious idea, and it’s meant to be somewhat crack, but I might be able to twist it into being heartwarming somehow. Way outside of my usual style, but I think that’s part of why it’s so fun.

Aro-Spec Artist Profile: Techno
Our next aro-spec creator is Techno or @techno-trashcan, better known to aro-spec Tumblr as @aro-soulmate-project!
Techno is an aroace writer and musician who’s doing amazing work in reclaiming and reshaping amatonormative narratives. I can’t describe her craft better than how she’s put it herself, so I’ll quote her blog header: writing to redefine the concept of soulmates from an aromantic perspective.
She’s also found on Arocalypse under the same username, for folks who want to get to know her and her work outside of Tumblr!
With us Techno talks about aro narrative in an amatonormative world, her love for the aro-spec community, the isolation of being an aro creative and an amazing-sounding original work we should all be looking forward to. Her passion for aro storytelling is writ in every word, so please let’s give her all our love, encouragement, gratitude, kudos and follows for taking the time to explore what it is to be aromantic and creative.
Can you share with us your story in being aro-spec?
When I was growing up, for years I never even considered my orientation. I didn’t get crushes–there was at least one instance where I thought I did or pretended I did because I wanted to be friends with a boy, but that was when I was very, very young. I never really developed an interest in boys (or girls, or anyone else), even once I hit puberty, and I really never thought that was weird. It wasn’t until 9th grade that things changed; there was a guy at my school who apparently had a crush on me, although I, being aro and oblivious, did not realize it at the time. He asked me if I liked anyone, and I said I didn’t, and chalked it up to being because I’d grown up with the same boring boys for so many years, so how could I? But I really didn’t think it was weird until he told me that “everyone likes someone at some point” and I got highly defensive without even knowing why.
And when I brought this up to people around me, they were like, “yeah, well, it is kind of weird, but that doesn’t make it a bad thing,” and I’d learned what asexuality was, and by extension aromanticism, around that time. I don’t really know when the seed was planted in my brain or when I really embraced my orientation, but somewhere along the line it just became a part of my life. It’s been four years and nothing’s changed, so I guess I have that boy to thank for setting me on this path. And that’s my aro story, or the short version at least.
Can you share with us the story behind your creativity?
I’ve always been drawn to writing, music and art. I’m a musician, I like to draw sometimes even if I’m bad at it, and I’ve been writing stories from a young age. Writing definitely became an outlet for me throughout the most complicated moments of my life, even if I didn’t always use that outlet appropriately or effectively. Anyone who knows me in real life knows I always have something to say!
Are there any particular ways your aro-spec experience is expressed in your art?
I find writing about my aro experiences, even if just for myself, cathartic at times. On my aro blog, I have a writing project where I take prompts and ideas for soulmate AUs and stuff and turn them on their heads, because arospec people are so often left out of that conversation or just written in with a “soulmates can be platonic too so sure aros are included i guess” in a way that erases many aro experiences, so I try to combat that. Sometimes just writing out how I feel is a way of expressing my aro experiences in its own way, too.
Please click keep reading to continue Techno’s story!
What challenges do you face as an aro-spec artist?
When I was younger and didn’t know what being aro even was, I would try to write romance, and it’d either end up really cliche or just completely bland because I had no idea what I was talking about. And once I realized why that was, trying to write romance became basically impossible because I have no experience to channel when doing it.
I also feel like most people don’t want to read a story without romance, or else they’ll just try to read between the lines and find it even when it doesn’t exist (shipping culture is a prime example of that). For that reason I often feel alienated from other writers, and I feel like no story I ever write will satisfy some people.
How do you connect to the aro-spec and a-spec communities as an aro-spec person?
The aro community means a hell of a lot to me. The community here on Tumblr and also on Arocalypse is the only community I really have, as I don’t know any out aro-spec people in real life. I used to feel more connected to the ace community than the aro community, but at some point that dynamic got turned on its head. I often find myself frustrated with parts of the ace community because of the way it sometimes erases or devalues aro-spec experiences in favor of reinforcing the idea that asexual people can and often do still experience romantic attraction and form romantic relationships, and that’s an extremely important distinction to make, but the delivery often leaves me, as an aroace, feeling like I’ve been left on the backburner.
What frustrates me with the aro community is how small we are, but more so I’m astounded each and every day by the amount of love that pours out of this community, and the nuanced and thoughtful discussions that so many of us are just dying to have the moment we’re given the opportunity.
TL;DR: I love the aro community with every inch of my sad aro heart.
How do you connect to your creative community as an aro-spec person?
Being an aro creative can be extremely isolating. As I said before, people want a good romance story so badly they’ll even read one where there isn’t, and this goes for stuff like music, too. So much content out there is all about romantic love and that’s extremely isolating for an aro-spec person. With my soulmate project, just searching for more prompts exposes me to so much erasure and amatonormativity. Some of these people are the same people who say they support us, but they are so quick to erase us when it means they get the story they want.
Writing about my experiences and having no one pay attention to them feels like screaming at the top of my lungs into a void that never answers.
How can the aro-spec community best help you as a creative?
Following me at @aro-soulmate-project and reblogging my work is the best way to do that! I also very much appreciate messages, questions, suggestions, anything! Even just talking to other aros gives me the drive to create more.
Can you share with us something about your current project?
Currently my project is on a bit of a hiatus as I finish up my semester at college and get back into the swing of things, but I’m still posting other stuff, and I should hopefully be back at it again soon! Generally, I find a prompt for a soulmate-related story online and then think about how I could twist it to fit a possible aro experience. It gets hard to cover the wide range of aro experiences, but mostly I want to work against the idea that everyone has their perfect match out there and will some day never be alone again, even platonically, because that’s simply not true, and even works which incorporate aros usually don’t do it tastefully, accurately, or organically. I try to keep them varied, but a lot of them are just me projecting! I need to go on the hunt for more prompts, so send them my way if you’ve got them…
Have you any forthcoming works we should look forward to?
Oh boy, I’m excited! A few years ago I wrote a short story for my fiction class called The Heartless that was basically a metaphor for aro(ace) experiences. And now that I have a lot more experiences on both the writing front and the aro front, I’m rewriting it and expanding on it! It’s a vaguely fantasy story that deals with the main character, Ace (haha), going on a journey to find out what happened to his parents and his best friend. Without giving too much away, it deals with navigating what it means to be human in a world where everyone else is constantly dehumanizing you. Aro experiences, wholesome platonic shenanigans ensue. I can’t say when it’ll be done, because I’m notoriously bad at keeping up with projects, but I plan on posting it to my aro blog once it’s done!

My Experience with 10K Trainer by C25K®
By Tom Maloney
Health Informatics
28 September 2021
What were your personal goals for the assignment, and why is it important to you?
I have always looked for an alternative way to clear my mind and stay focused after trying meditation multiple times. I constantly tried meditating but often became distracted even after switching my meditation method and trying mindfulness meditation. The aim was not to entirely clear my mind but to remain fully aware of my surroundings and thoughts in the present moment. The continued failure prompted me to try out jogging for 15 minutes a day and noted a slight increase in my concentration, attention span, and overall mood. However, my body was not used to this strenuous exercise, and my legs felt stiff during the first three days, and I had to quit. Now, this course has prompted me to go back to running, and the only way I can stay disciplined is by having a well-planned running schedule. I came across 10K Trainer by C25K®, and I feel it’s a good application for accountability. My end goal is not running the 10 kilometers which the app is popularly known for, but I hope to use it for the next 3-4 weeks and improve my fitness and longevity.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What features did the application provide?
After two days of trying the 10K Trainer application, my perspective about running has changed because the app alternates between walking and running. I felt that combining the two minimized the soreness I initially used to feel, and who knows, I might be a 10K runner by the end of the program. That said, I want to mention a few features I found quite appealing. These include convenient audio coach and alerts, integrated music and podcast options, an accurate map and health app integration, and access C25k forum with thousands of other runners where one can share their progress and success stories.
 What worked?
After a few days of trying the app, combining walks and runs have proved effective in running consistently without getting tired. I learned from the forum that this combination is called “wogging” (walking and jogging), such a hilarious name. Walking conditions the body and prepares it for the coming sprint or jog. In most cases, over-enthusiastic novice runners start off by going directly into running (my first mistake). For the most part, this often leads to a miserable experience characterized by sore muscles, mental burnout, or physical injuries. Scientific studies also back up this argument by conveying that walks before or during a run play a significant role in helping the muscles adapt, recover, ease fatigue, and rebound for optimum performance (Galloway, 2016). The author also argued that an individual can manage a slight stress increment “if a recovery interval is regularly inserted” (Galloway 25). I commend the 10K Trainer developers for researching and integrating this feature; I believe this was my biggest motivator to continue using the app.
The integration of a music playlist in the app is also a plus for boosting performance. Before running, I compile a playlist of songs that align with my mood. Even though some professionals argue against running while listening to music, it is quite refreshing and gets me pumped up for runs--especially in the morning. According to Hutchinson (2017), listening to music while running reduces the perception of how hard one is running. In particular, he indicated that music promotes one motivational and emotional state, “allowing runners to find their optimal arousal zone.” In other words, music primes numerous bodily systems for action. In my case, I felt that music blocks fatigue from reaching my muscles and brain, which significantly improves my effort and pace. Therefore, integrating music function in the 10K running app is a plus and one of the reasons I chose the app.
Lastly, integrating the podcasts option in the app was quite interesting and worked for me, especially during the walking phase before running. The app offers various podcast topics ranging from health and science, culture and education, lifestyle, business, and others. Most importantly, there is a search bar, and one can search their favorite or listen to the trending or recommended topics. I initially perceived podcasts as boring, but my perception has changed tremendously, especially since they pump me up in my morning exercise and boost my productivity. It is a unique distraction and helps me concentrate on running and even add extra minutes because I usually do not want to finish my workout until the episode ends. I came across the “Mindfulness-Real Ass Affirmations” podcast by Chisa Pennix-Brown, which offers affirmations that incite calmness. I perceive it as being your own life coach with a guided meditation that incorporates witty language, humorous, and mature perspective.
On days I do not feel like listening to motivational speakers, I opted for comedic podcasts, particularly “Netflix is a Daily Joke.” There are various options to choose from John Mulaney, Amy Schumer, and the famous Kevin Hart. Researchers indicate that the invention of podcasts helps people be alone and connected to others simultaneously (Heshmat, Yang, & Neustaedter, 2018). In particular, podcasts act as a flexible storytelling medium that prompts an intimate feeling and connection with the host, a good distraction when engaging in my daily physical workouts.
What didn’t work?
Even though the app is functional, I have a few concerns regarding the ads. One instance was when the ads interrupted my running after a full-page ad opened, and I had to reboot the app to continue. These mid-freezes are annoying, and developers should do something. Nonetheless, the app is practical, and everything else works perfectly. One thing I would change to make the application better is to remove full-page ads and incorporate a stats section whereby I can review, for example, the previous week’s stats. The app can also offer detailed information showing how fast I ran in each session.
How did it make you feel? What would you change about the application to make it better?
10K Trainer by C25K® has ultimately changed my perspective towards running and prompted me to try mindful running, especially after failing terribly at mindfulness meditation. For those who do not know, mindful running refers to staying engaged with your body when running, paying attention to your breathing patterns and muscle movements. I found this quite effective, especially when listening to some “boring” podcasts; that is right, I choose boring podcasts on purpose. Doing so, I can let my mind and body connect at the same time, and my whole body emerges into a flow/liquid state. Running becomes effortless. I am a gazelle at that moment. I usually feel in sync with the surroundings, particularly the gentle morning breeze, as my muscles and mood connect with nature. Mindful running is a widely researched area, and physical health experts believe that integrating mindfulness with other healthy pursuits plays a crucial role in elevating an individual sense of wellbeing (Positivepsychology, 2020).
What were your expectations going into this assignment, and did your experience match those expectations?
My expectations going into this assignment were achieving a clear state of mind to help me remain productive throughout the day. So far, the progress is substantial, and I strongly believe I will achieve a strong physique by the end of the exercise. You know the popular saying that “the early bird catches the biggest worm,” this new experience helps me keep catching worms all day long. Furthermore, the experience has met and surpassed my expectations as I feel slightly lighter and healthy, not to mention the “runner’s high” keeps me feeling good and charged throughout the day.
How using the application compared to other times to monitor or change a health behavior
The 10K Trainer running app is outstanding compared to other methods I have used to incorporate morning runs in my daily schedule. When the Covid-19 pandemic broke early last year, I purchased a FitPro smartwatch from Amazon to help watch steps and distance covered and calories burned during exercises. Even though my newfound hobby to run in the morning died a premature death, I did not love the experience with the gadget. Nonetheless, I enjoyed its colorful LCD, TPU material design with a somewhat stylish strap. Another feature I found interesting was the blood pressure monitor and its notification feature, which notified me, for instance, if I stayed inactive for over one hour during the day.
Nonetheless, the FitPro smartwatch does not match my newly found 10K Trainer in many aspects. Firstly, the 10K trainer offers more practical features that significantly improve my running experiment. In particular, the walk-run feature has proved effective in helping me run consistently without getting tired. Another feature missing in FitPro but present in 10K Trainer is integrating music and podcast options, significantly boosting my performance. Lastly, I managed to achieve mindful running, something I did not know about when using FitPro. As days go by, running improves my sense of being as I easily feel in sync with my surroundings, particularly the gentle morning breeze as my body connects with that fresh air.

The Festival of Love ~ Fairy Tail Fanfiction ~ With Time Travel! ~ Samurai Natsu! Barbarian Gray!
by Impracticaldemon | FFnet  | AO3 [Chapter 1 rated T] [Ch 2 will be M]
March 1 Prompt: Time Travel (Past) AU @fic-writer-appreciation
Author's Note: This story was intended to be a Valentine's Day gift for the lovely @nalufever. Actually, it still is! However, since it is very late, I have incorporated a wee touch of Saint Patrick's Day to go along with it.
Tumblr media
Warning: Shameless use of faux ancient brogue (probably faux Scottish, but definitely faux), and a weird combination of canon Magnolia, sixteenth century Japan, and faux Olde English. I have totally abused "ye", since it sounded better than plain old "you". Thou, thee, thy / thine are generally used correctly, but no promises. This story has its occasional serious moments, but should not be taken too seriously.

The Festival of Love, Part I - The Perils of Fairy Cakes
"So…" Lucy slid onto the bench next to Erza and rested her beer and elbows on the scarred wooden table. The tables were new—again—but they already looked like they'd seen several ugly bar-fights. Fairy Tail was like that.
Erza glanced up from her slice of cake in surprise. "Lucy? I thought you were off on a mission with the guys?"
Lucy frowned. "They were being even more difficult than usual, and after the third fight I told them to handle it on their own."
"Oh. I thought they were doing so much better these days, too." Erza sounded genuinely disappointed.
"Don't worry about it—really. I think all the pink hearts and glitter of our Valentine's Day party got to them, and now they feel the need to prove their, ah, macho-ness or something. Which brings me to my question—"
"The decorations were lovely," Erza murmured. Lucy shot her a suspicious look, but Erza had a dreamy expression on her face, and didn't seem to have interrupted on purpose. In the same kind of pensive tone, the red-head continued: "I thought that you looked very nice, Lucy. Also, Natsu was much better behaved than usual, which meant that Gray was as well. Or vice versa, perhaps…"
"Erza." Lucy took a gulp of beer and prepared to take the plunge. "Jellal's going to be pardoned any day now. Nobody's trying to lock him up any more. Why didn't he come to the party?"
Erza stiffened, and her cheeks gained a tinge of red.
"He was… busy. As well he might be, with everything that has happened. I completely understood, of course." She poked absently at her cake—a rare sight. "Besides, we are good friends who have overcome much adversity, but we are not… not… lovers." The red tint returned to Erza's face, but she continued with her usual resolve. "So there was no reason to attend such a party, really."
Lucy had to forcibly restrain herself from using Happy's line of "You liiiiiike him!" Instead, she chose her words with care, glad that she was only halfway through her beer.
"Well, we were sorry not to see him, of course. The guys are over any hard feelings, you know—if nothing else, they were seriously impressed with him for taming most of the Oracion Seis single-handed. So I was thinking that you might want to invite him—and anyone else from Crime Sorcière of course—to Fairy Tail's upcoming Lucky Shamrock Dance. Just as friends, of course." I can't believe Mirajane actually called it the Get Lucky Shamrock Dance, and I'm not going to share that information just now.
"We're having another party so soon? It's only been a week since Valentine's Day."
"Erza. You're my friend and I love you, but you really need to lighten up." When Fairy Tail's most dangerous sword-swinger tensed again, Lucy smiled reassuringly—or hoped she did. "Erza, don't worry about it, we all do. Need to relax, I mean. Hence the socials, or whatever weird name Mira's calling them these days."
There was a rather long pause, and then Erza took a deep breath and nodded firmly. "Yes, of course. And it is important for the members of Fairy Tail to be in the best possible condition for the challenges ahead." Whatever they may be, thought Lucy to herself. "Very well," continued her companion. "I will ensure that Jellal—and the other members of Crime Sorcière—are invited to the Lucky Shamrock Dance. I expect that he—or they—will attend, once I explain how important it is."
They'll attend if they know what's good for them, you mean. Lucy nodded gravely, but surreptitiously flashed a thumb's up to Mirajane at the bar. The white-haired woman glided over a moment later, as cheerful and friendly as ever.
"I saw you mangling your cake, Erza, so I brought you a fresh slice."
"I didn't mangle it."
All three women stared down at the sad remains of Erza's cake.
"Yup, you did," stated Lucy. For once, Erza accepted her conclusion without further protest.
Erza and Jellal arrived together at the Lucky Shamrock Dance. Erza had been on-hand to greet all of the members of Crime Sorcière when they first arrived in town, and she'd intended to make sure that they were happy with the accommodations she had chosen. However, Richard had smiled gently and left immediately for Fairy Tail, saying that he wanted to find out whether Jura had arrived, and Meredy had gone with him, though not before giving her blue-haired guildmaster an encouraging pat on the shoulder. There was a new sadness around her eyes, which Erza ascribed to Ultear's disappearance not so long ago, but for the most part she seemed as cheerful as usual.
Since Richard and Meredy were the only members of Crime Sorcière who had elected to come to the Fairy Tail party, their departure had left Erza alone to chat with Jellal. Social small-talk was never an easy thing for either of them. Their feelings for each other ran deep, and Jellal seemed hell-bent on accepting unrequited love as his probable fate, which angered Erza, since she returned his love, and therefore his supposed self-denial was as much a penance for her as for him. She had yet to find a suitable way to express that sentiment to Jellal, since part of her understood his need for penance and absolution.
Fortunately, Lucy and Juvia had also been aware of how awkward the pair's meetings could be. They had ensured that Erza was prepared with the finest in "Lucky Shamrock" attire, all of it green, glitzy, and sure to break the ice, whether through laughter or revulsion. It had worked, too. Erza had to give her friends points for that, and it didn't hurt that she secretly—or not so secretly—loved kitschy clothing.
More than a few people turned and stared when Jellal arrived in a sparkly green top-hat, form-fitting white trousers with sequinned green bell-bottoms, and a matching t-shirt that read "Who Needs Luck When Your Hands Are Pure Magic?" Coaxing him into the outfit had taken some doing, but Jellal was always gracious when it came to Fairy Tail—and Erza. Erza's glittering green leprechaun jacket and hip-hugging mermaid-style skirt were really quite normal in comparison. She liked the giant, shamrock-shaped hairpin thrust through the top of her sweeping red up-do, however.
The "not actually a couple" made their way through the laughing, chattering crowd in search of drinks. Drinks duly obtained, Erza immediately moved to acquire two of the delicately frosted cakes piled high on a table near the bar. She made sure that Jellal took a couple as well.
"Now we're all set," she murmured with satisfaction.
"Alcohol and dessert—a well-balanced meal if there ever was one," Jellal agreed gravely. The wary tension that was now second-nature to him was gradually fading. Being at Fairy Tail and around Fairy Tail mages always relaxed him—at least, it did on the rare occasions that he visited for reasons that didn't involve the imminent end of the world, or Life As We Know It.
"Absolutely. Now then…"
They both raised their glasses. The sign above the cakes proclaimed that a toast had to be made for every treat taken from the tray.
"To good luck." Erza touched her glass to Jellal's and drained half the contents.
"To good friends." Jellal smiled at Erza, the weariness in his eyes replaced with soft appreciation.
"To true love." Shocked by her own words, Erza hurriedly clinked Jellal's glass and drank down the rest of her improbably verdant beer. (1)
A moment later, the world spun around her, vanishing in a haze of grey fog and glittering stars.
"What the bloody hell?!" Not Jellal's voice—Natsu's?
"Ignarr' them, peat-fer-brains! Get thy demonic arse o'er here tae deal wi' th' bluidy arrows!" Gray?
There was a lot of yelling going on, and the distinct sound of sword striking sword with unfriendly intent. Erza struggled to sit upright, but somebody had their arms wrapped around her and seemed reluctant to let go.
"Don't move. We seem to have landed in the middle of a battle." Of course. It would take a battle for Jellal to hold me like this.
"So I see—and hear." Erza looked around cautiously. A partial—and rapidly melting—ice barrier rose nearby, and had probably saved them from being the unwilling recipients of the business-like, near-meter-long arrows they could see arcing overhead. In fact, it was clear that the extreme arc was being used to get around the ice.
"Whoevairr y'arr"—the speaker seemed unnaturally fond of his 'r's—"ye'd best dae somethin' tae protect yer lady. We're in a rright bit o' trouble heerre, ye ken?" He looked like a slightly shorter, leaner version of Gray, although he wore an eyepatch over his right eye. His visible eye was a stormy, dark indigo.
"Aye—I mean yes—I can see that," replied Jellal, cautiously sitting up and eyeing the knots of combat around them. Most of the men involved—and the one woman—were wielding katana, the curved-bladed, single-edged swords of the country's past. And every person but themselves—and Eyepatch-Gray—wore kimono and hakama, and the brightly-lacquered armour of the ancient samurai.
"No, we are not in trouble!" The young man who looked like Natsu ignored Jellal and responded directly to his comrade. "Don't be such a poltroon, thou northern seek-sorrow! And thou didn'st even thank me for takin' out ye bows!"
"Watch thy tongue, tha fiery bastarrd! Bows or no, they've got mair men, and the Stairm-bringair ain't one tae trifle with! Not tae mention his warr-witch!"
"Is that Laxus?" Erza interposed, gazing intently out over the battlefield. Samurai-Natsu's camp was situated on a low rise, backed by dense forest. The combatants—about twenty or twenty-five a side—were fanned out in a slight u-shape less than twenty meters away.
Erza was quickly (if regretfully), slitting her dress up to her hips and stripping off her high-heeled emerald slippers. The turf was definitely too soft for stilettos. Nobody seemed to notice—or care—that she'd grabbed a long knife from a nearby pile. She was having difficulty summoning her own weapons and armour.
"Who, now?" The pink-haired warrior gave her an odd look. "Surely ye know the name of that blond menace out there? And the she-devil, his war captain? Meaning no disrespect, milady."
Jellal cleared his throat. "They both look familiar, but we're strangers here."
"Oh. Well, don't know how you ended up in the middle of our camp, but I've got to get out there before Graeg yells at me again—even though he was the one to insist on coming back here to check on the prisoner. If ye want to help, feel free to borrow a sword, although"—the warrior paused, as if seeing Jellal properly for the first time—"ye don't exactly look arrayed for battle. Funny, I thought ye were when I first saw ye."
"We were dressed for a party, not a fight," Erza snapped, although there was often little difference between the two at Fairy Tail. "We'll be fine. Before you go—what's your name, and why are you and Storm-Bringer fighting?"
"Well, we have his other captain, ye see." Natsu's near-twin gestured at a hanging cage, from which a deceptively slender, green-haired man was surveying the battle, his expression sardonic rather than concerned. "I mean… it's the Love Festival this evening starting at sundown, right?"
Noting Erza's darkening expression at the obscure explanation, Jellal paused in buckling on a belt and scabbard. "And capturing Free—I mean that man—has to do with the Festival? I take it that the other side is trying to get him back before the sun sets?"
"Well, of course. Freed the Dark and Jana the Fair—though she'd be a whole lot fairer in my book if she wasn't so fond of torture—they're the Storm-Bringer's chosen companions, right? So obviously—"
"Whut, in the names o' ae the de'ils art thou doin' now, ya gorrrmless twist o' hot airrr?" Graeg was back and clearly irritated. His face might be familiar, but the leather bracers and body armour, and the massive, ice-edged broadsword were new. "Twas thy bacon-brrained idea that brrought us heerrrrre! Thou wanted tae 'test' the Staerrm-Brringair! Weel then! Gaet thysel' out therre an' test him, ya—"
"Coming, coming! Thou knowest what, Graeg? Thou should'st use thine ice to calm thy temper!" Their 'host' unsheathed his katana and swung it up onto one armoured shoulder, casually flicking the blade to set it on fire. He looked back at Jellal and Erza. "I'm called the Salamander, or Fire-Bringer, but if ye want to join our cause, then just Dragneel is fine. Good? Good!"
Salamander-Fire-Bringer-Just-Call-Me-Dragneel grinned at them, and then ran off toward a spot where the fighting was getting especially serious for the 'Capture-Freed' team. Graeg the Title-less eyed them suspiciously.
"Jest tae be clearrr"—Erza decided the extra 'r's got worse when Graeg was agitated—"if ye ain't on ourr side an' ye trrrrry tae pull anything, I'll drrrrive ice spikes intae yerr eyes."
"That's very clear," responded Jellal, face suddenly grim.
"Weeeell, a-rright then. Talk tae ye latairr, assumin' we're ae alive, eh?" With a last, measuring look, Graeg raced off after Dragneel.
"I'm all set," declared Erza. "But the question is, what should we do?"
"I'm really not sure." Jellal looked out at the approaching chaos of melee battle, which flashed with intermittent gouts of flame and arcs of lightning. "I don't think we know enough to pick a side without endangering possible innocents."
"There really aren't any innocents among us," called a cultured voice from the cage not far behind them. "But I don't recommend wasting your lives in a futile attempt to prevent Lord Dreyar from reaching me. Dragneel's a young fool, and the ice-maker is desperate to prove his worth, being a foreigner and all. I don't see why strangers such as yourselves should get involved."
"Is that so…" Jellal said softly. He walked closer to the cage and peered up. "Tell me, what about the Storm-Bringer's grandfather? Why isn't he resolving this problem?"
Thin green eye-brows arched in surprise over pale blue eyes.
"Lord Dreyar's grandfather is dead—he'd be eighty or ninety if he weren't—and my lord would never get His Royal Highness his father involved in a personal matter."
Erza was starting to get twitchy. As important as it was to learn the rights and wrongs of the situation, she found herself rather keen to challenge 'Jana the Fair'. Plus, Dragneel's embattled forces were starting to fall back toward them. In a few minutes, she and Jellal would be pitched into the battle no matter what. There were only modest, wooden fortifications in place, and nothing that would stand up to lightning. This was a field camp, no more, although it had clearly been set up ahead of time.
Fortunately, Erza thought that she could finally sense the magic of this place. It felt very raw to her, and difficult to control, but it was there. She hurried up to Jellal, and he gave her a knowing look, which she returned with a faint smile. To her surprise, he moved closer and gently squeezed her hand. It was odd, but… nice. With one glance and a touch, she knew that he was aware of what she was thinking.
"You're Freed the Dark?" Jellal turned his gaze back to the captive, keeping his face scrupulously neutral.
"Yes. And you and your lady?" The light eyes were keenly interested, and cold as graveyard marble.
"I'm Siegrain, and this is Lady Scarlet."
The caged man's eyes narrowed. "How odd. You are telling the truth, but saying very little. Most people aren't good at that—they like to talk about themselves, even when it's unwise."
"We all have our skills."
"Yes… I sense great power from both of you. Perhaps even enough to turn the tide for the hothead and his barbaric friend. Not that they're alone, of course, but they're the major players on the field today for their side. Right now it's not an even fight—they won't be able to hold me for another ten minutes, let alone the hour until sunset. I only gave my word to stay put until my lord reached this cage. You could change the outcome, perhaps."
Erza and Jellal exchanged looks. This version of Freed was distinctly different from their own. He spoke smoothly, and apparently honestly, but there was an undertone of malice to his words. It was as though he were evaluating them as interesting objects, not human beings. Siegrain had been rather similar; it was not a comfortable thought.
"What will happen to Na—Dragneel—and Graeg if they can't prevent Lord Dreyar from rescuing you?" Erza wasn't as smooth as Jellal, but she rarely felt the need to hide anything.
The chilly gaze seemed to sharpen for a moment, and then Freed's evil twin shrugged elegantly and looked down to brush a speck of dirt off his handsome, wine-red kimono. Both kimono and hakama were made of expensive cloth, judged Erza. Not surprisingly, the narrow scabbard—it wasn't made for a katana—was empty. She waited patiently for a verbal answer, despite her awareness of impending battle.
"Dragneel will be punished, but not killed, if that's what you're worried about. He's kin to the Dreyar family, and strangely well-liked for such an arrogant pup. He gets away with a great deal, though he's strayed far beyond the line this time out. As for Graeg, who knows? He's been a thorn in my lord's side for more than two years now, and is undoubtedly talented. He also has a knack for creative strategy, and I suspect that he was instrumental in my capture. The Salamander is extraordinarily strong, and quite intelligent, but impatient."
By the time he had finished, Freed was speaking to thin air. Moving with the sure understanding of those who have known each other, and fought together, since childhood, Erza and Jellal had already entered the fray at the pallisade.
[END of CHAPTER 1]
(1) Verdant, in this case, meaning not only green, but sprouting foliage (a four-leafed clover on long, slender stem). It was a little odd, but more ecologically sound than little paper umbrellas.

Top Ten Characters Meme Thingy-Ma-Jig.
I was tagged by @godspeedcomplex! Thanks bro! :)
Rules: Name ten of your favorite characters from ten different fandoms then tag other victims to do the same!
And I actually will only pick ten this time... unless they’re tied equally. That tends to happen a lot.
I’m so excited for this one. :D
And because this is about characters... I have to talk about each one, with at least one bullet point response for each (or paragraphs... who knows). Sorry that this may turn into one long-ass post, but... characterization is my jam.
Woo.
‘Kay. Here we go!
1. Killua Zoldyck (very closely followed by Gon Freecss...) from Hunter X Hunter.
Ah, goodness.
Killua Zoldyck belongs at the top of this list for numerous reasons, even though I struggle to place a number in order for these characters. Truthfully, the top... three or four or so on this list will be pretty much in order. As much as I adore Gon Freecss and his role in the anime, Killua is, by far, the most unexpected turnout of a character I have seen in this medium.
Killua’s storyline stems from a tragic yet morally ambiguous background, taking into account the many times we’re meant to feel sympathetic for a murderous little assassin child.
Aside from his marvelous design and relatively innocent appearance, this character is ultimately self-sacrificing in nature for the few (or two, really) people he truly cares for, most obviously Gon and Alluka.
Without going into a long tangent about the many reasons why this character has subverted many tropes and has created a well-deserved staple in the world of anime and manga, Killua stands out as a passionate, relatable and emotionally vulnerable character who never strikes me as unrealistic in his ambitions.
There’s an undeniable rawness to him, this sensational connection that few characters have created for me, coupled alongside my constant desire to learn more and more about his mind works and what his relationship to Gon parallels in the world we live in.
He’s also the character I’ve related to the most -- in personality, fears, flaws, and even family dynamics -- even more so than number two on this list...
2. Izuku Midoriya (very closely followed by Katsuki Bakugou...) from Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia.
Similar to my reaction to Killua Zoldyck as a character, Izuku Midoriya is someone who I never believed I could actually enjoy as far as shōnen protagonists are concerned. This character’s flaws are very rare when considering the genre as a whole, but again, his self-sacrificing nature and total lack of self-preservation serve as fantastic parallels to not only his own story, but the lives of the people around him, especially that of All Might and Katsuki Bakugou.
Izuku is also an incredibly fine example of a young shōnen character with inspiring dreams and ambitions that never seems out of place on someone his age.
He feels realistic, and I relate to this character so much that it’s almost concerning. I love his design, his motivations, his personality, and his flaws. He is a very well-drawn character with a wonderful drive and incredible development, and most of all... he demonstrates fine ability to be what he wants to be outside of the realm of superpowers, which are so prevalent in the canon universe of the manga in which he stars.
I have not only an intense fondness and analytical love for this character, but admiration as well. Izuku’s dreams feel palpable, and I feel inspired whenever I watch him pursue his ambitions through hard work, determination, work ethic, and a rare dash of humility that is so rare to find in shōnen main protagonists.
A perfect example of a character who is masculine and strong while not fitting into the clean stereotypes that make others in the genre the way they are.
3. Zuko (very closely followed by Sokka and Iroh...) from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
There’s plenty of nostalgia connected to this one, aside from my immense amount of respect for the cartoon in general. Zuko is a character that changed the dynamic of cartoon antagonists/protagonists for many reasons, and his storyline is fantastically paralleled to Aang’s.
His storyline is one of my favorites I’ve seen in a cartoon/anime, and most likely because it was one of the first I had seen at the time. Becoming familiar with this character and exploring the complicated corners of his personality is an absolute treat, and over the course of the entire show we are able to become familiar with his story, his character, and the immense flaws and strengths that compose him as a whole.
And I guarantee that the term “redemption arc” mostly stems from this guy. As it should. (Unfortunately it’s led to far too many renditions and rehashings of this idea... *sigh.*)
It was honestly extremely difficult choosing between Zuko and Sokka, as my reasons for adoring both characters are completely different, but there’s something to be said about how difficult this was from the show itself.
Avatar’s characters explore incredible depth in most of their cast, with both antagonists and protagonists, and Zuko’s storyline is not one to be missed.
4. Severus Snape from the Harry Potter book series.
Ah, this character.
My reasons for this one are relatively simple, and are more related to the ingenious strategies J.K. Rowling incorporated into making this character believable, sympathetic (depending on the reader -- this opinion fluctuates quite often) and one of the most intriguing characters in the Harry Potter universe.
From the very beginning there’s an intensity to Snape that is unrivaled with others, littered with constant questions and wondering what his place in the overall story could be.
With each revelation I found myself continuously fascinated, and as far as I’m concerned, no one could have brought this character to life better than Alan Rickman in the film adaptations. His gravely voice, greasy black hair, intense emotional resonance matched with the subdued reactions expected of the character... I consider it to be legendary, and the best casting choice in the entire film series.
My admiration for Snape’s storyline is more based on the fact that these continued revelations are woven like a fucking quilt throughout the books, dancing with questions and nagging points that prompt the readers to furrow their brow and wonder where Rowling was going with this guy.
I will never forget the genuine shock and adoration I felt for this character’s depth and incredible complexity, even far past the sniveling, frigid exterior and morally ambiguous background.
5. Daenerys Targaryen (closely followed by Jamie and Tyrion Lannister, and Sansa Stark) from A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones.
Oh my god it was so fucking difficult picking my favorite Game of Thrones character. Jesus.
I actually didn’t think good old Mother of Dragons would make it to the top of my choices, considering my immense fondness for the characters closely following behind her. (And there are so many characters I admire and love from this universe, so those don’t even scratch the surface).
But, when it came down to deciding which one outranked the others, I had to take into consideration what made me fall in love with them to begin with.
Daenerys Targaryen has some of the greatest character development and growth that I’ve seen in any medium.
This is a rather bold statement. But, as far as growth and development, I found myself consistently fascinated with Daenerys’ storylines, especially in the first two to three seasons. She evolves from this meek, timid, spineless woman sold as a slave to a barbarian warlord, to an incredibly influential and flawed self-proclaimed queen, with a fascinating historical context that elevates her above others.
Daenerys has grown rather stagnant as far as development in the last season or so, which is what made me hesitate. However, my admiration for her, as the Breaker of Chains, or even the Khaleesi, stemmed from her bold, brave choices and ultimately well-meaning (yet naive) heart.
So while my feelings for her in general are mixed, my admiration and fascination with her development from the beginning of the series to now is just... unbelievable. To see it progress this far has been a treat, indeed.
6. Mrs. Brisby from The Secret of NIMH.
A bit more of a nostalgic trip here as well, but The Secret of NIMH is one of my all-time favorite films, and a beautiful encapsulation of dark fantasy, magical wonder, family dynamics, motherhood, and the strength in the small against something larger than life.
And Mrs. Brisby is a character that deserves a place amongst the best for many reasons, and many of her best qualities have to do with her bravery and determination to save her family from a cause that seems far too great.
She is admirable in her courage, relatable in her vulnerability and fear, and inspiring in the lengths she will go to save her little family.
I admired this character as a little girl, and still do this day as a young adult. With the hundreds of films and television shows I’ve seen (and on top of countless books), there are few characters who resemble the importance of motherhood as well as this one.
7. Roy Mustang (closely followed by Edward Elric and Wrath) from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Fuck. I broke my own rule.
Now, Roy and Riza have one of my favorite dynamics in anything I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch (I have never read the manga). Also, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is my second favorite anime of all time, so that made it even more difficult to pick a favorite. Many of the characters are complex and likable, but after some serious inner debate, I had to go for this.
Roy Mustang is a character who could easily display himself as a bit of a pretentious character, especially with his grounding by the hand of Riza Hawkeye.
His encounter with Lust is one of my favorites I’ve ever seen, and his backstory with that of Maes Hughes and Riza Hawkeye add so much to all three of their developments that it almost makes it impossible not to sympathize.
Roy’s anger is palpable in this series. Even more so, dare I say it, than Edward’s. As much as I adore Edward (and as fascinating as I find Wrath), and relate to him and just... love his story, there’s something about Roy that calls me back to those fateful moments where he struggles to grasp his need for revenge and the greater good of the situation surrounding him.
His consistent arc as a character, and his connection Maes Hughes, only adds to his development and his wonderful relationship with Riza Hawkeye. I also heavily appreciate his mentor role to Edward, and how easy it is to relate to him within everything else.
8. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III from How to Train Your Dragon.
So, this film series in general is definitely DreamWorks’ magnum opus, and no one can convince me otherwise. The character development with Hiccup is not only relatable and endearing, but admirable as well. He stands out with his consistent decisions and changes, and his incredible attachment and relationship with Toothless is wonderful to observe.
On top of this, I find myself often comparing the character of Hiccup and Izuku Midoriya (which makes me think of an HTTYD AU and as much as I love that idea... gosh, I don’t have the time haha), due to their lacking roles in the society they’ve been born in and their incredible intelligence and awkward mannerisms. Also, they’re both freckled (hooray for my freckled faves)!
Anyway.
Hiccup’s tenacious attitude and courage is easily combined with his incredibly kind heart and trust in his companions. The development between him and Toothless is rooted in a friendship that we understand through vivid actions and understanding (and relating to) Hiccup’s personality and roles as the outcast/black sheep in his village of Berk.
I adore this character, and the series that has inspired him. Also, there’s something to be said about his ever-changing role in the movies, and I’m so incredibly excited to see where his character is taken with the third impending installment.
9. Raven from Teen Titans.
Yeah, okay, more nostalgia in this one. Raven is a character that I admired from the very first time I watched Teen Titans, and above all else, I found her backstory, personality, character development and superpowers to easily be the most interesting of the gang. The cartoon is charming and dark and mature when it needs to be (in most cases), and much of the relatable and occasional complex nature to the cartoon involves this character.
Raven’s powers and her empathetic connection to the world around her is an idea that fascinates me each and every day.
Even with original novels I’ve planned out and magic systems I’ve created, a great deal of my protagonists (usually cycled through on multiple drafts) have been subconsciously inspired by this ability and this general connection to the surrounding world.
I had no idea how much Raven herself inspired me as a writer and creator until I considered my inspiration for the female characters I normally admire in these mediums. Her flaws are understandable while, at times, both irritating and relatable. Her design is far less stereotypically “pretty” when compared to, say, Starfire. There’s an element to her that screams authenticity when compared to the other Titans that I always found myself drawn to the most.
She deserves the popular following she has, both in the comics (from what I understand) and in this beloved cartoon.
10. Chihiro from Spirited Away.
Ah, this film. Goodness.
There’s something brilliant about Chihiro and her character in general, but my reasons for liking her so much are mostly derived from the experience that I get to have as the viewer into the world of Spirited Away. This film is... a masterpiece, in every sense of the word, crafted by the ingenious hand of Hayao Miyazaki. And this man truly knows his characters, and is one of the greatest crafters of strong female protagonists I have ever seen.
Chihiro is young, and acts young. She is scared, and acts scared. She sobs, and wails, and trembles, and reacts as any little girl in her dire situation would.
But, she is believable in her bouts of courage, in her desire to achieve her goal and her willingness to break out of the shell she’s been granted to mature past her years. Her journey in the film rides on her shoulders, exposing her kind, giving heart as well as her unabashed bravery, which makes her easy to relate to and cheer for until long after the film’s credits stop rolling.
She is a character who is so human, so enticing, and so accurate of female representation that I find myself wondering time and time again why I haven’t reviewed the film she’s in yet.
Chihiro is one of the more complex female protagonists I watched as a little girl, and I admire her journey and personality to this day as a staple in anime.
Woo. Well, that was a wild ride. Thanks for reading!
I’m going to tag... @decembercamiecherries, @tonerukun, @killushawn, @soulestring, @diggitydamnsebastianstan, and... whoever else wants to! Go for it! And I tagged these people because they were the first ones to pop in mind, so... yeah. You guys don’t have to do it. XD
Until next time!

Yuletide Letter 2019
Dear Yuletide Writer,
well hello there! clearly you and I have some of the same interests.  I’ve never done this before; I’m afraid I don’t fully know what to say here, but here we go anyway.
General DNW:
Rape/non/dub-con; non-canonical major character death; smut/graphic sex scenes; heavy angst; hurt no comfort; graphic depictions of deliberate and methodical self-harm*; graphic depictions of suicide; heavy gender dysphoria; grimdark; complete downer endings; character bashing; incest; cringe comedy; a/b/o; mpreg.
*I don’t include things like, say, punching a wall in a fit of emotion under this. however, something like cutting would not be appreciated.
general other comments:
I like family/friendship stories, things that play with canon in interesting ways, honestly... a lot of things.  I don’t know. articulating things I like is hard.
I’d prefer gen over ship fics, and while I don’t mind sex being mentioned, for any actual scenes, a post-kissing, maybe, fade-to-black would be nice.  Overall I generally prefer ships to be background elements rather than a story’s focus, and definitely don’t think you have to write around canonical relationships on account of this.
(I don’t hate smut lmao, I’m just picky enough about it, in ways that are difficult enough for me to articulate, that I think it’d be better to not go there for Yuletide)
I like canon or near-canon settings, au settings that start from little divergences, that sort of thing.  I’d rather not have a full mundane, modern au (unless it makes sense with the canon in question? this mostly applies to The Numair Chronicles and The Dragon Prince.
I like plotty fics! but like obviously that’s going to depend on the length you’re going for.  Whatever you think best.
For almost all canons I’ve consumed all the currently available material; fandom-specific notes below.
Also, I’m Elsin on AO3 and liryian on discord.
My fandoms!
(paired with prompts and/or vague suggestions, but, you know, anything goes except for my dnws.  most prompts have spoilers in them so watch out if you’re avoiding spoilers for one you didn’t match on.)
(also: the length of my prompts may vary between my requested fandoms, depending on a whole variety of factors. Don't worry - if I requested a fandom, I want it just as much as I want the other fandoms here, regardless of prompt length.)
Zombieland Saga | Hoshikawa Lily, Tatsumi Kotaro
This one can be Lily and/or Kotaro, though if you want to put them together that’s obviously great too!  I don’t mind other characters being brought in either.  I was thinking for Lily maybe something about family and/or deep friendship, maybe the relationships between her and her dad, or her and any of the other girls, or her and Kotaro... you get the picture.  Maybe something about her being trans?  If you go that route, dysphoria’s obviously a thing that’s there, but I’d rather the fic not wallow in it, if you know what I mean.  (basically: please no misery porn with gender dysphoria).
For Kotaro, I was thinking maybe something to do with his past, or maybe what the hell’s even going on with the zombie girls, or... well.  Whatever you think is best.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse | May Parker, Olivia Octavius
So for this one I was thinking maybe something about the relationship between May and “Liv” and I would really prefer this one to be gen.  Pre-movie (why does May call her Liv?), post-movie (what happens afterwards?), whatever you like.
Carmen Sandiego (Cartoon 2019) | Shadowsan
Anything about him, really! Any time during canon--what does he do with VILE? what does he think of little Black Sheep?  Any time post-canon, or pre-canon, either, and I would love you forever if you explored his relationship with his brother--there’s so much potential there!
The Dragon Prince | Claudia, Soren
Any sibling fic, really, with these two!  I’m particularly interested in unforeseen consequences from Claudia healing Soren with dark magic, or maybe what-ifs--what if she didn’t do that? what if she did it differently?
I’ll probably have seen Season 3 by the time reveals happen, so feel free to incorporate new developments (but ignoring season 3 is just fine too).
The Numair Chronicles | Varice Kingsford, Ozorne Tasikhe, Arram Draper
Oh man the dramatic irony of this book is absolutely killing me.  I am deceased.  send help.
Okay, but seriously, I love these kids and I (kind-of-but-not-really) hate the fact that they are all in character here, as younger versions of the characters in Immortals, and we can see in them how it’s all going to fall apart, and we know it won’t last... well.  It hurts in the best way lmao.  Anything exploring their lives before they meet would be great (in this case I’d take any one of the three) or anything during their school years or, or, or...
If the fic is set after Numair has to leave, whichever character(s) are missing I’d like to still be some kind of present for some of it, even if only in the others’ interiority.
also!  We know from Immortals that by the time Numair’s in his 20s he can’t heal, yet he can heal in Tempests and Slaughter.  If you wanted to explore what the hell could happen to him to make him lose that skill I would love it.  I’d love most things.  Don’t stress out.
I don’t have strong opinions on any of the possible ships (though I ship Arram/Ozorne less than any other option) and my preference for gen extends to here; I’d rather not have a heavy focus on romance.  Canon-amount is nice.  If you want to write a fic that ends 20 years after Tempests and Slaughter I wouldn’t mind inclusion of Numair’s relationship with Daine.
(...or in a super super super alternative option, since I just reread the book and am now excited about everything I’d forgotten about, if you wanted to write about characters who aren’t in the tagset, I would not at all mind getting fic about Prince Stiloit or Faziy, especially in something like the leadup to their death or what-if-they-lived.)
(...although this last may be best left to treaters, since it’s somewhat removed from the original tagset...?  I don’t know, I’m sorry, I’m just now excited about everything instead of just the kids, who I’m still very excited about, so you go wild, you do you, you beautiful writer.)
(a side note: if you didn’t match with me on this one, and are interested in picking it up, then for the full dramatic irony experience I would recommend reading the Immortals quartet first, since this book sometimes plays off reader knowledge of what is to come.  On the other hand if you don’t want to do that, it’s probably not terrible to start with?  I think it works on its own, but I just wouldn’t know, as I didn’t start with it.)
(I’ve read all the Tortall works with the exception of some of the short stories.)
final notes
Thank you for writing me fic!  I’m sure it’ll be lovely. :D

A B C?
A) Why are you excited about this character?
personally i love katsunosuke’s concept to death. his personality might not be to my tastes in all honesty (i struggle on rping extremely polite and altruistic characters), but his character concept is something that i’m actually very proud and excited for people to find out.
i’m also excited since i’d like to see how he deal with connections outside of his village. he doesn’t like to be personal and isn’t eager to bond with people who he isn’t familiar with at all or has absolutely 0 connection to him, so it’ll be interesting.
B) What inspired you to create them?
this wave was prompted by a vocaloid song, but his original wave was because he was a matching character with a few other characters for an enstars oc group! he’s changed too much to the point where i don’t really count katsunosuke as the same matching character that his wave 1 was.
he’s supposed to resemble the warrior class in an rpg game, and was originally created to be... well, kind of like a leader. shin (his wave 1′s name) was an energetic person who likes to help out around the school. he’s also less traditional than katsunosuke.
i do keep stuff from his wave 1 that i incorporate into katsunosuke’s character, but yeah. that’s how he came into fruition.
C) Did you have trouble figuring out where they fit in their own story?
for his first wave, yes. however for katsunosuke himself, not really. i designed him to be somewhat akin to an oc that just has the shsl title as a label that can be easily removed if needed. not that i would, but y’know.

Suzanne O'Brien CEO, Blake Rian Consulting is featured in Orange Coast Magazine
https://authoritypresswire.com/?p=32173 When Suzanne Justice founded Blake Rian Consulting in 2018, she had already worked in the staffing industry for over 14 years, placing tens of thousands of candidates in their dream jobs. A working mother with a 15-month old and another child on the way, Suzanne bravely set out to pursue her dream of owning a business. With a clear vision of entrepreneurship and a desire to forge stronger, more meaningful relationships with clients, Blake Rian (Suzanne’s company as well as her daughter who shares the same name) was born.In just two years, her business has grown from an impassioned concept incorporated in her living room to a multi-location enterprise with offices in Newport Beach and Bellevue, Washington with a third one planned for Austin, TX. The busy mom and successful businesswoman took some time to answer questions about starting a business, the challenges, the successes, and more. Can you tell us a little about your company and the services you offer?Blake Rian Consulting offers unparalleled hiring services to place the right people with the right companies. Whether you are looking to hire new staff or find your next career we are happy to offer you our services. We provide an efficient, effective, and enjoyable experience to job seekers as well as employers. We are a Certified Woman Owned company with over 14 years of experience partnering with clients in all industries nationwide. Our team knows that a resume is important, but it is just a blueprint of someone’s experience. Our job is to understand the needs of the employers and job seekers to help bring together the perfect match in expertise, skill, and company culture fit. Our vision is to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships with all our clients. We become your business partner throughout the hiring process. Our success is a result of our commitment to the best people, the best solutions, and the best results. Our partnership includes Contract, Direct Hire, Payroll Services, and Managed Services opportunities. Every team member is committed to providing you, our clients, with an experience that is focused on what you value most.“We firmly believe it is not about putting someone in the seat. It is about finding the right fit.”Our Corporate Headquarters are located in Bellevue, WA and we have a location in Newport Beach, CA.What prompted you to start your own business?I realized that after years of leading high performing teams for other large staffing companies, the goal became more about the bottom-line profit vs partnering with our clients. I observed companies overcharging clients or underpaying talent to ensure they hit their profit margins. In a sense, staffing became a bad word. I wanted to break that cycle and the best way to do that was to start my own company.Blake Rian Consulting began in 2018. With a 15-month-old son at home and one on the way, I decided to conquer my fear and in turn realized my dream of entrepreneurship. I decided to name the company after my soon to be daughter, Blake Rian. Blake Rian Consulting was even incorporated directly in my living room.I incorporated my vision of building meaningful, long-lasting relationships and created a vision for my company. The company’s main goal is to partner with our clients and candidates to truly understand what each side is looking to achieve during the hiring process. I am a firm believer that although a resume is important, it is no more than a basic blueprint of someone’s experience. I found that by sharing a candidate’s story with my clients, they get a better understanding of the candidate’s unique contribution. I bring clarity to my clients, so they gain an understanding of what they really need in an employee, which is not always what the client originally envisioned. What were some of the challenges with starting a business and how did you overcome them? One of the biggest challenges, when I started my business, was balancing family time and work. I had to be very mindful of my time and where it was allotted. That is still a challenge and one that I do not think will ever really go awayHow does Blake Rian distinguish itself from competitors in the industry? One of the reasons I wanted to start my own business was to fit into my client’s hiring process versus telling them they must fit into our process. We take the time to truly understand the needs of our client’s business and how we can be a valuable partner. That is how I came up with my motto –“We firmly believe it is not about putting someone in the seat. It is about finding the right fit.”What is the most rewarding aspect of your work? The most rewarding aspect of my job is helping both the clients and the candidates, it sets us apart as we care about these parties equally. Just the other day a candidate I placed over 5 years ago, reached out to thank me for helping him find a job. He said he wanted to wish my family well during the Covid-19 pandemic, but he also assumed I would not know who he was. I told him I not only remembered when I placed him but I also who he was. Blake Rian Consulting is not just putting bodies in seats, we genuinely care about the people we are working with and are acutely aware of the impact we have on their lives as a whole not just in business. It really is an amazing feeling knowing you helped someone take care of their family. These are the moments that remind me why I love this industry and stories like his are what make the long hours and hard work worth it.The same goes for my business clients, when I know we helped them fill a valuable need in their organization. The work we do is incredibly rewarding. What kind of advice can you offer others who might be thinking of starting a business of their own?Find what you’re passionate about and take the leap! Of course, do your research but, as they say, you’ll never work a day in your life if you do something you love. How has your company/staff adapted to the current COVID-19 pandemic? We continue to adapt every day as things are ever-changing. The ability to be flexible and partner with our clients as their business needs change is the most important action we can take. What kind of advice would you offer a company that is trying to find the right individual to fill a position?Give us a call and learn how we can partner with you!Name one thing you learned after starting your own business.I learned that when you truly believe in something and are passionate about it anything is possible. As long as you hold onto that and let it guide you, success will follow. What would you say is the secret of your success and how do you motivate yourself? The secret of my success is hard work and tenacity. My motivation is my family, ultimately my goal is to build a legacy for my children. What are your plans/goals for the rest of 2020? Or What is your outlook for the rest of 2020?My plans for 2020 are to continue building my business in California and Washington. The goal for the end of the year is to open an office in Austin, TX.Helping and participating in our community is especially important to us. We support girls in STEM and non-profit organizations in both California and Washington. During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have partnered with other organizations to provide PPE for Seattle Children’s Hospital.I am hopeful that in the next few months the world will see a safe return to normalcy. Until then, we will continue to do what we can to support our clients and the communities around us during this difficult time. For more information about Blake Rian Consulting, contact [email protected] or visit them online at blakerianconsulting.com
