All his Engines / City of Demons : How these people did Mickey T Dirty (adapted from my IG)

Generally, I feel that magico-religious syncretism is an inherent human quality--potentially one of our best. Furthermore, I feel like most dissenting opinions on this are just, like, wrong, like straight up historically incorrect. Something something, agricultural metaphors, crop rotation, fertile soil. A mage's melanin count determines neither their power nor their specialty.

But SOMETIMES...sometimes the white people ARE in fact up to some White People(tm) shit.

There is no reason a white person can't write a banging depiction of indigenous gods. Example: Mike Carey wrote this amazing Hellblazer story back in '05 called All His Engines (pictured above: a plot critical page). It's one of my all time top Constantine stories. It contains one of my favorite contemporary takes on Mictlantecuhtli.

In '19, it's released as an animated adaptation--Constantine: City of Demons. Fine. Dandy.

They do violence to John Constantine's character, of course. They make him a fucking idiot, because men in fiction are all stupid now. It's the rule. Fine! Whatever.

BUT THEN

They do THE THING I hate. the very thing. the failure of intersectionality, racist thing.

They fellate themselves for being woke because female characters are talking to each other.

MEANWHILE.

they just make Mictlantecuhtli weak as hell.

The hierarchy of power is clear and this fucking dollar general knock off piss ass mage who can't take on a nameless demon

Because Mictlantecuhtli is, ultimately, a Latino male in this story, and the zeitgeist is that Latino men must never, ever win. The message is always that any fucking white dude is better than you--to say nothing of any white woman. Frankly, I'm amazed they didn't pull a Star Wars and have a purple haired forced feminist icon lecture Mictlantecuhtli on, idk, the patriarchy.

Listen. Good ol Mickey T is not a small time fun time god. Mickey T is a fucking powerhouse on several continents. Mickey T is MOST DEFINITELY present in LA, demographically speaking a hugely Mexican place. Mickey T is HUGELY powerful in his pantheon, and the culture his pantheon is from was wildly dominant for a long, long time. we call it the Aztec EMPIRE for a reason.

But the story logic here. the story logic of who beats who is so fucking stupid.
