Law & Order Special Victims Unit Season 23 Ep. 21 "Confess Your Sins to Be Free"

Carisi must find another way to prove his suspect guilty when the only evidence in a crime is a church confession. Additionally, Burton Lowe reappears to make things right with Benson.

There is a woman in the confessional. She says she has committed adultery twice and is afraid she will do it again. She is aware that her actions are incorrect, but she struggles to control them.

In the meantime, Aidan Quinn's character attends an AA meeting, where he discusses his long list of people he has harmed with his sponsor and expresses uncertainty about how to make amends.

Simultaneously, the woman who needs to confess goes again. She stated her intention to commit adultery. She claimed that she was raped last night. The woman's sister meets Carisi, who is here to say hello to Father Duffy. Audrey comes out and the women leave.

Carisi is asking for pre-cana, even though he has not proposed to Rollins yet. He tries to find out from the priest what was going on with Audrey, but the priest cannot tell him.

Burton meets with Benson to try to make amends. He admits to drinking a lot and not remembering what he had said. Benson remembers and is still angry. He asks if she wants to throw a glass. He apologizes and wants to make amends. Benson asks for what. Using and abusing women and using alcohol as an excuse?

Carisi speaks to Audrey's sister, who reveals that she dislikes Audrey's husband and believes he is abusing her. Carisi suggests that Audrey goes to see Benson.

Fin wants to know what Burton wants. Benson suggests hearing him out since he's trying to turn his life around. Carisi mentions that his friend's sister may be in trouble with domestic abuse.

Benson and Carisi speak with Audrey, who initially did not want to involve the police. She discloses that she was raped and had been having a fling with her neighbour. Audrey expresses her feelings about the situation. Benson and Carisi reassure her that they are not there to judge her. She left the door unlocked for her neighbour. However, instead of her neighbour, a man wearing a ski mask and gloves entered her house. He tried to choke her with a beld and raped her before leaving. She believes that the attacker was not her neighbour as it felt different. Vince arrived shortly after and found her. She is not familiar with him. It is speculated that the woman's husband may have been involved.

The police questioned Vince as Velasco states that Vince has declared bankruptcy and has record for bank card fraud. The possibility of the priest's involvement is raised. Vince denies telling anyone about the affair.

Burton arrived at work, but Liv informed him that she couldn't talk to him. He then invited Benson to attend his AA meeting the following day. After leaving, Benson advised Fin not to inquire about the situation. As for the case, Benson stated that it was evident that the perpetrator was aware of the unlocked door. The husband was at work but could have hired someone. Benson advises checking the DNA against the system.

The police search Audrey's apartment. Her husband returns home and becomes antagonistic, accusing her of lying about being raped. Audrey confesses to going to confession.

Carisi informs the police that he is acquainted with the priest and firmly believes that Father Duffy is innocent. As a result, Carisi decides to speak with him. During their conversation, Fin adopts an antagonistic attitude. The police also interrogate Father Regis, who maintains that he was alone in his room at the time of the assault.

Benson believes it may be a long shot, but suggests sending in an undercover agent to confess to being alone, vulnerable, and cheating on their spouse to see if either priest takes the bait. The police stake out the art gallery where the undercover led the perpetrator. A person in a hoodie breaks in, and it turns out to be Father Duffy, who is subsequently arrested.

Burton speaks at his AA meeting. Liv enters the room and he immediately begins discussing how he has hurt many women and feels ashamed. He specifically mentions his first girlfriend, Liv. Later, Liv and Burton go to a diner. Liv mentions that Burton has done a lot of work on himself. Burton confesses that he was truly in love with Liv, and she admits that she felt the same way. However, she acknowledges that their feelins do not justify their actions. Liv has to leave as an arrest has been made in her case.

Velasco wants to hear Duffy's side of the story. Fin notes that this is the same modus operandi as Audrey's. He requests Carisi's trust, but Carisi is unsure how to proceed. Duffy denies any involvement in an assault and cannot disclose his reason for being present. Benson enters and informs Carisi that Duffy's lawyer has arrived, advising him to step back. Duffy claims that he was ensuring the safety of the UC. He cannot disclose how he knew she was there. He would rather go to prison than break the confessional.

Carisi assures Benson that Duffy is not a rpaist. He suggests that he may know the identity of the rapist, who confessed to him. Benson suspects that Father Regis may be the rapist and has confessed to Father Duffy. She asks the detectives to investigate whether Father Regis has a history of sexual assault. They find a parishioner who was raped under similar circumstances and had confessed to Father Regis. However, she does not believe that Father Regis could have committed such a crime. Regis was transferred to Carisi's parish six weeks later. He sent the same flowers to Audrey and Carisi.

Carisi cannot prosecute either of them and needs to find a solution. He runs away. Beverly Morrison reported that the man who assaulted her came to make amends the previous night, and she recorded their conversation.

Carisi visited the church where Father Duffy was praying, but Duffy declined to speak with him. Carisi explained that he was there for personal reasons, as he was losing his faith. He tells Duffy that they both know Father Regis is guilty and tries to convince him to abandon his vows.

Benson visits Burton to discuss Beverly Morrison's statement and asks him about what happened. Burton admits to drinking with Beverly and having sex with her, but he honestly doesn't remeber it. Burton is unsure of what happened. Benson claims she was unable to give consent as they were both drunk. Benson informs him that Beverly wants him to go to prison.

Benson plays a tape for Carisi. Burton is willing to plead guilty to make amends. Carisi confirms that Duffy told him the same thing. Father Duffy visits a deceased person's grave. At the graveyard, Velasco reveals that Regis' father caught his mother cheating and killed her in front of him. Regis is watched by the police as he tells the whole story of how he confessed to Father Duffy and has been absolved while his parents burn in hell at his mother's grave Regis is arrested by the police.

Duffy states that Regis has finally been defrocked. He prays that Regis finds peace now that he has been arrested and has confessed to 7 rapes. Carisi admits that he is struggling with his faith.

Benson talks to Burton, who has accepted a plea deal. He will be put on the registry and receive six years' probation. He did not go to trial because he wanted to take responsibility for his actions. Benson tells him that she wants to forgive him, but he says that she does not have to. Benson advises him that he has a long journey ahead and can only take one stop at a time.
