Der Augenblick der Schönheit

Die Königsstädte Radjasthans - Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur

Die Trommeln lassen mich Raum und Zeit vergessen. Dumpf hören sie sich an, unheimlich, später fordernder, schneller, immer schneller, als möchten sie explodieren: Die Trommeln von Udaipur. Die dicht an dicht stehenden weißen Häuser schaffen einen Klangkörper, der alles in Schwingung versetzt. Ich liege auf dem Dach des ‚Lake View Restaurants‘ am ‚  ‘ und genieße die Aussicht über den Pichola See, dem zauberhaftesten der zahlreichen Seen, die das Stadtgebiet bis hin zu den Ausläufern des nahen Aravalli-Gebirges mit dem Umland verbinden. Im sechzehnten Jahrhundert war hier noch Sumpfland. Heute ist Udaipur eine der malerischsten und romantischsten Städte Rajasthans. Dicht bewaldete Hügelketten bilden einen natürlichen Schutzwall.

Am Pichola See, Udaipur

Ich blicke über die Dächer der Altstadt. Streifenhörnchen huschen wie kleine, drollige Gespenster an mir vorbei, halten an, rümpfen ihre Nasen, putzen sie und setzen ihre purzelnde Verfolgungsjagd zwischen Dachvorsprüngen und Mauernischen fort. Die Trommeln jenseits des Sees, die eine bevorstehende Hochzeit ankündigen, verstummen. Von unten ist jetzt nur mehr das aufgeregte Hupen der Tuk-Tuk Fahrer zu hören, die sich ihren Weg durch die Gassen bahnen. 

Straßenszene in Jodpuhr

Für den morgigen Tag habe ich hier im Restaurant einen Kochkurs gebucht, also nehme ich die Gastfreundschaft des Wirtes gerne in Anspruch. „Go upstairs, you will see the most beautiful roof terrasse you‘ve ever seen!“ Er hat nicht übertrieben. Bunt bemalte Tische stehen da und, als Ausrufezeichen des Hauses (und aller umliegender Gebäude), ein Himmelbett, das seinem Namen alle Ehre macht. Auf Pölstern und Tüchern mache es mir bequem, die zur Seite gerafften Vorhänge geben die Aussicht über Dächer und See frei. 

Kochlehrling im Lave View Restaurant, Udaipur

Drüben, zwischen den schmalen Häusern, setzt sich der Zug der bunt gekleideten Trommler erneut in Bewegung. Stampfende Rhythmen, drängend, dann zart, beinahe liebevoll, - die Hochzeitsgesellschaft bekommt das volle Programm verpasst. Ich warte auf den Sonnenuntergang. Unter mir, im Hof des ‚Bagore Haveli‘, einer der Paläste der Stadt, beginnt gerade eine Tanzvorführung. Heute Vormittag habe ich ihn besichtigt, er beherbergt ein sehenswertes Museum, das die märchenhafte Phantasie indischer Architekten, Bildhauer, Holzschnitzer und Freskenmaler wiederspiegelt. Ein ganzer Saal voll mit lebensgroßen Puppen steht da: Man fühlt sich zu Gast bei einer Audienz eines Rajputen-Fürsten längst vergangener Tage. Das Herrenhaus stammt aus dem Jahre 1751, es besitzt hundertachtunddreißig Zimmer. Drüben überquert der Musikzug die Brücke, die den See an seiner schmalsten Seite mit der Stadt verbindet und marschiert zum Haus der Braut. Der Lärm ist ohrenbetäubend. Sogar die Streifenhörnchen werden nervös. Sie retten sich in meine Nähe und blicken mich aus angstvoll kugelrunden Augen an. Die buschigen Schwänze zittern - sie sind eng an die kleinen Körper geschmiegt. 

Die Blaue Stadt Jodhpur

Udaipur hat viel zu bieten. Der Stadtpalast des Sisodia-Geschlechts ist von bemerkenswerter Schönheit. Heute Vormittag habe ich ihn besichtigt. Ein riesiges Geflecht aus mehreren eigenständigen Palästen, die die Fürsten der Maharanas über die Jahre verbinden ließen. Er ist der größte hoheitliche Baukomplex Rajasthans. Verwinkelte Gänge mit zum Teil niedrigen Decken verbinden Mahal und Höfe. Die Beschwernis von einem Komplex zum anderen zu gelangen machte Sinn: Es verunmöglichte das Eindringen bewaffneter Feinde. 

Der Stadtpalast in Udaipur

Blecherne Musik tönt aus einem der Innenhöfe des Palastes, in dem die Tanzvorführung in vollem Gange ist. Ich verabschiede mich von meinem Hochsitz und den Backenhörnchen, die längst über alle Simse sind. Unterwegs treffe ich Rohan, meinen ceylonesischen Kollegen, der im Zimmer nebenan wohnt. Mein Ziel ist das andere Ufer. Dort, in einem kleinen Restaurant will ich zu Abend essen. Noch bin ich der einzige Gast, es ist kurz nach Sonnenuntergang. Ich nehme Platz. Der Ausblick trifft mich unvorbereitet. Das prächtigste Panorama, das sich denken lässt, liegt vor mir: Paläste, Brücken, Ghats. Alles spiegelt sich im Wasser des Sees, alles ist festlich beleuchtet. Man ist versucht zu sagen, kitschig, nein, es ist einfach nur schön, schöner als das Wort ‚schön‘ es zu beschreiben vermag. Ich bestelle ‚Tandoori Masala Chicken Curry‘, reichlich scharf, wenn man bitten darf. Auf dem Dach nebenan wird ebenfalls eine Hochzeit vorbereitet. 

Der Palast der Winde in Jaipur

Weit draußen im See liegt eine kleine Insel, in deren Mittelpunkt der Tempel ‚Jag Mandir‘ steht. Glühlampen beleuchten Mauern, Erker und Balkone. Das Gebäude erstrahlt in Weiß und Rosarot. Devendar, mein Tandoori-Beauftragter, folgt meinem Blick: „Very expensive!“, zur Bekräftigung wackelt er mit dem Kopf. Vom anderen Stadtufer ertönt fröhliches Geschrei. Auf den Inseln trommeln sie ihre Antwort an die Kollegen vom Festland. Von der Zeremonie nebenan weht der Wind zärtliche Melodien herüber.

Udaipur, die Königsstadt

An dieser Stelle sei eine Anmerkung zum Begriff ‚Glück‘ gestattet. Das, was ich soeben erlebe ist überwältigend. Es berührt mich zutiefst. Glück hat nichts mit Zufall zu tun, noch weniger ist es unverdient oder ein ‚Geschenk‘, und schon gar nicht bedeutet es Überfluss. Lässt es sich nicht auch als ‚Erkennen des Augenblicks‘ beschreiben, als ‚Vollkommenheit bewussten Erlebens‘? Ich empfand es, als ich zum ersten Mal in die Augen der Frau blickte, die ich liebe. Und ich empfinde es jetzt, und hier und in diesem Augenblick, in dem ich die makellose Schönheit dieser Nacht erfahre. Die Harmonie des goldenen, architektonischen Schnittes Jahrhunderte alter Baukunst, das Zusammenspiel von Farbe und Licht, die Fröhlichkeit und Lebenslust der Menschen, das unbeschreiblich göttliche Tandoori-Hendl mit Biriani und Minzsauce, g‘schamster Diener. All dies darf ich genießen. Hier und jetzt. Und das Entscheidende: Ich erlebe es bewusst, in eben diesem Augenblick. Auf euer Wohl, ihr Götter und Schamanen! Auf das Leben! Incredible India!
