"Basically" Unarmed: A Hilarious Tale of Indian-English Speakers
Intro:Hey folks! Have you ever noticed how some words are like trusty sidekicks in our daily conversations? For us Indian-English speakers, that MVP is none other than “basically.” It’s our conversational Swiss Army knife! But what happens when you pluck this word out of our lexicon? It’s like taking the right hand off a superhero. And before you split hairs about left-handers (I see you, fellow…

I watched the first two episodes of ETV Bal Bharat’s Detective Conan English dub. It’s pretty good, to be honest. The phrasing is... weird but I’m all for greater representation of different English-speaking dialects that aren’t just American all the time. Indian-English dubbing has a long way to go but I’m excited for it to go further. I needed a breath of fresh air. Some standouts of weird phrasing are “That’s enough of eavesdropping!” and “This has to be the secret between two of us.”, still understandable but weird. This may just be an Indian dialect situation though. There are also standout lines for me like: “What a flake” which Shinichi/Conan says when he’s annoyed with someone. And there’s also Ran when she’s scolding the messiness of her dad like: “This is why you have no clients and this is why Mom left you!”. I’m pretty sure it might be like that in Japanese but the directness of it floors me with laughter. ETV Bal Bharat is also producing eleven other dubs alongside this in various Indian languages, so Indian viewers do have options. It’s pretty crazy.

i've seen iceman's complicated relationship to religion. i've seen ridden with southern bible bumping trauma hangman seresin. what about bradley bradshaw’s guilt- and grief-ridden catholicism? hm?
some of his only memories of his father are at midnight mass and singing carols on christmas, and not the fun ones, but the ones that shined a light on the lord and filled his words with devotion. even back then, when baby bradley had no idea what 'worship' was, his daddy did it and it made him feel so happy and so warm inside.
then im sorry and it was a training accident and an american flag folded into a pristine triangle. after that his momma couldn't stand going into church. they stood outside and listened to the sermons from the road and visited daddy's grave with flowers and prayers and i-miss-yous but bradley eventually forgot where their regular pew was and what the colour their pastor's hair was and what the wine (grape juice) tasted like. but he wore the cross. he always wore the cross.
and after momma died he stopped going all together. maverick wasn't religious. bradley told himself the reason he missed it was that he missed visiting the house of the lord, but really it was because maverick had other connections to nick and carole bradshaw, but bradley only had the church and now he doesn't even have that. sure, he's fine, but his dad’s cross hangs low on his chest like a brand because ever since dad died he's never felt the same devotion. now, his prayers aren't for god or christ, they’re for his momma and his daddy and he lies to himself that they aren't. and blasphemy is a cardinal sin.
then he looses maverick too. he floats around for years and forgets how to say his hail marys.
he re-applies for the academy and thanks the lord for the first time since he was a child that he got in. he follows in his father's footsteps and find a new church. he goes every sunday. he says grace. he does everything a proper christian should. honour thy father is written into every action he takes.
because his god is still his father. his holy spirit is still his mother. his christ is still maverick. he’s still sure that his prayers never reach their lord and saviour. and blasphemy is a cardinal sin.

The voices in my head aren't poetic anymore. they don't recite me poems on loneliness or anxiety while I lie on the floor staring at the ceiling thinking about the sins I own.
The voices in my head aren't my enemies anymore. They have become my friends. And for them I ignore the whole world, shutting the door from percluding anyone to meet the friends I admire and adore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The voices in my head don't speak anymore they just scream, scream at the highest possible pitch they could. They are as loud as the waves of the ocean no matter how much far I stand from the shore but I can still hear the noise they make.
The voices in my head are killing me yet I don't feel any pain because all the emotions, all the human emotions are very long gone. All that resides here is silence, numbness and emptiness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The voices in my head aren't anyone else but me, I'm the voices in my head. Standing midst of a graveyard infront of the corpse that's been burned to ashes, ashes consisting of parts of me and my shattered dreams. ~ dishaa

Charles’ patches and pins :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SKA pin: Quick History lesson because I had no idea what it was: definitely google more:
SKA is a music genre that originated in Jamaica. In the 70s a lot of Jamaicans immigrated to the UK. Punks and young Jamaican immigrants felt a sense of unity due to both being screwed over by the system. This led to 2 Tone SKA which mixed SKA with punk rock elements. While 2 Tone SKA is a genre, it was also a movement that focused on racial unity.
Rude Boy patch: In late 60s Jamaica RudeBoys were young “delinquents” who listened to rocksteady music. Term was used in England to refer to fans of SKA and 2 tone. Think the other insults used for punks that have been reclaimed.
Checker Print pin: Represents racial unity in the movement.
Target patch: Symbol for the Mod subculture. Google this one to.
Union Jack pin (on bag) and patch: He sure is British
Smiley face pin: I believe it’s just a generic smiley face but it could be a logo.
Unknown metal(?) pin: I can’t get a clear enough look at it to even begin to guess what it is.
Unknown pin: I have no idea. The one between the metal one and the checker print. No a clue.
Unknown flag(?) pin: A flag with horizontal blue, yellow, and red stripes but I can’t find anything with those colors in that order.
