Whether in your personal home or in your workplace, domestic and hospitality labor is labor!
[Image description: A square graphic with red text that reads, "Domestic labor is real labor whether in the workplace or the home." Below the text is an illustration of four different people performing domestic tasks such as trash pickup and sweeping. More text below the illustration reads, "Industrial Workers of the World. Find your local branch. IWW.org/join." The IWW logo is included in the bottom right of the image. End description.]

Hey ho, folks- my local IWW branch has been organising a hospitality worker's union in the Glasgow city centre pub Saramago, for which the organisers were punatively fired. There's more information on our website if you're interested. Those in Glasgow (Scotland) and surrounding areas would be appreciated on the pickets tomorrow, and those who can't be there physically can still spread the word and support the fired workers while we campaign to get them their jobs back.

Every workplace is different, but that does not mean you cannot form a union there. Fellow Worker Matilda explains that many of us avoid organising in our workplaces by rationalising that our workplace is “uniquely bad” to organise in. But this is a product of fear and helplessness. When we recognise this and get support from other organisers, each of can break through the wall, no matter where we work.

My least favorite things about anti- UBI discourse is always the techbros whining that "nobody is going to work anymore! People will just watch Netflix all day!" and I have 2 responses:
Tumblr media
1) Who the fuck cares. Who the fuck cares what people do with their time! That's kind of the fucking point!
2) People aren't going to stop laboring. Housework (look, it's right there in the word!) will still need to be done. So will maintenance on our homes and personal spaces. Children will still need carers, as will the elderly and disabled. There are millions of examples of ~work~ that we do all the time, uncompensated, that won't suddenly stop because we aren't forced to sell our labor to provide corporation's profits.
I'm not surprised that what is traditionally women's work is invisible to these dipshits, but it never fails to anger me.
Anyway. Join the IWW.

Quote
The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things in life.

Did you know you can join the Industrial Workers of the World even if you aren't traditionally employed? Check out IWW.org/join for more information on finding a local branch today!
[Image description copied from alt text: A square graphic with an illustration of a person sitting at a table with a laptop, looking at the screen with confusion. Text on the graphic reads, "Freelancer? Self-employed? Between jobs? You can still unionize! Find out how at IWW.org/join." The IWW logo is included in the bottom right corner. End description.]

"The workplace, via its structures and bosses, intentionally seeks to instil compliance via a sense of fear and an illusion of powerlessness.
It is structured like a dictatorial hierarchy where the boss has an enormous control over your life and exerts that control via your direct manager.
You are always watched via CCTV. Your efficiency is monitored via performance goals. You are timed by a punch clock. You are constantly surrounded by the workplace's marketing and brand. You may wear a uniform.
All of this instils a sense that the company has power, and that you do not. Other workplaces are more distant, and this form of psychological propaganda doesn't register as much when you're not spending a large portion of your waking life under someone's command in that place. So when another workplace organises, it may be quite easy to write it off as a situation where they obviously had it much easier than you. They didn't have to deal with the same unique challenges that you would have to if you tried to start a union. This emotional distance mystifies other workplaces and creates the impression that union campaigns or organisers are 'special.' It's not something anyone can do. Or, it's something that can only be done in a mythologised 'easy' workplace or perfect circumstance.
To overcome this terror, we have to compare the material reality of the workplace with our ideas about it and confront the way it has trained us to perceive it differently. Perhaps this can be done with conversations with an external friend as above, or a discussion with another worker in the workplace. Perhaps it can be done on your own. This re-framing doesn't necessarily mean turning negatives into positives, but rather, thinking about how a workplace's unique traits change how you can operate. What methods will be effective, what might not be. There's no 'one-size-fits-all' to a union campaign. Either way, though, every workplace will have its challenges. Those will be unlike those of other workplaces. That's not something to be afraid of; it just forces you to be inventive."

Getting out of the "Uniquely Bad" mindset
A fellow worker in the IWW has written a piece on the "Uniquely Bad" mindset, how this false rationalisation leads to complacency or apathy, and, most importantly, how to break out of it.
Highly recommend giving it a read if you ever find yourself thinking "My workplace is just fundamentally different!" A mindset I've found myself getting trapped in again and again.
