Hello! I love your Eleutherophobia fics and as I was reading them, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the themes with Tom/ex-hosts and the themes in The Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes from marvel. Out of curiosity, have you ever thought about the comparison between those two characters in their respective fandoms?
Hell yes. I mentioned in a different post that Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail by Owlet is one of the fics that most influenced my own writing. That series is narrated (un-narrated?) by Bucky Barnes, and it has the coolest use of experimental writing I've ever seen in a fic series.
What I mean by un-narrated: there are almost no personal pronouns at all in the first ~70% of the first story. It's almost all passive voice. So, for example
Mission imperative pounds in the Asset’s chest, takes the form of increased pulse rate and respiration, a tightening of the throat. Backup is required to protect the objective’s lungs.
as a way of conveying "I got Steve out of the river but now he's dry-drowning and I'm freaking out." Like half the sentences in the fic have no subject at all, and most of the other half have these super-detached ways of referring to Bucky ("The Asset", "mission head"). By all logic it shouldn't work — presumably Owlet learned in school not to use passive voice, just like the rest of us — and yet it goddamn well does.
Because the most important rule of creative writing isn't "show don't tell"; it's "form follows function." If your character's out of breath, use short-sharp sentences. If your character's in a dream state, use long flowing ones. If your character's making love then tell us with highfalutin enchantment; if your character's fucking then use smutty cheek. If your character is experiencing something totally fictional — they got put into a sci fi machine that took out their identity — then why not convey that with a jarring lack of self-reference in their thought stream.
The early chapters' lack of self-reference gradually starts to change, as The Asset formerly known as Bucky discovers through the power of coffee and protection (as promised!) that his old identity is gone but he can still forge a new one. One of my favorite details is that the narration gradually starts calling him Barnes, but the narrator himself remains indifferent on the subject — Steve calls him "Bucky," Jarvis calls him "Sergeant," Nat calls him "James," his neighbors call him "Jimmy" — and he only freezes up when people ask him what he prefers to be called, because he doesn't want to decide.
Anyway, I don't do anything that extreme in my own fic. But I do play around with breaking the rules. (E.g. I know it's ungrammatical to use phrases like "my eyes searched" or "my arm reached" — but if it'd be inaccurate to say "I reached" then form follows function.) And I'm a lot more comfortable putting experimental writing into fic than I would be if I hadn't read Owlet's work. Ascribing agency to limbs is probably my most consistent rule-break, but I also have a whopper of a run-on sentence in "How I Live Now" and a bunch of deliberately-unclear dialogue in "Ladybird, Ladybird." And you're not wrong, nonny: I owe a ton of that to Bucky, but mostly to Owlet's interpretation of the character.

I finished my Mission Assist Esther Novelty to go with my Barnes with Cat Eleanor! Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail is my ultimate comfort read and I couldn't help myself! Whenever my health gets bad, I find myself turning to Barnes and his mission. It's on the good list for sure.
(I'm not done making these either. Barnes needs his Steve and Esther needs Ollie and Lidia!)
Tumblr media
“Have another cookie. Now, is there anything you need to know about the neighborhood? And feel free to tell me absolutely everything you’ve ever thought, said, or done. I have been stuck for ages with only Ollie and Lidia for company, and I’ve heard every story they have to tell a hundred times.”
Required responses completely unclear.
“Um.”
“Have another cookie.”
“Thanks”
Barnes replays the entire paragraph while he chews.
“Where can I do laundry?”
“Oh no, don’t tell me you’re going to be boring.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“How terrible.”
She leans forward in her chair and glares at him.
“Jimmy Buchanan. Are you shy?”
Is ‘shy” going to make you stop pestering me.
“Yes.”
“Oh well, no matter. I’ll pry it all out of you eventually."

Happy belated birthday! Here’s a random ask, although not a question: earlier today the song Hold Back the River by James Bay popped into my head out of the blue, and it’s basically thee stucky song to me, so I’m not sure if you’ve heard it already or if it’s even your style of music, but I thought I’d suggest it in case you might enjoy it :) The river imagery gets to me in both a literal and figurative way—and coincidentally it came out in 2014 too!
I do know that song, and it IS very Stucky! I think I probably know it from watching a lot of the British X-Factor in 2014, because I have vague memories of it being covered by like 5,000 contestants on that, lol, but yes, it's very Stucky.
I've been making a lot of fanmixes this month because they're the only thing I have the brain latitude to do that's any fun, and this is definitely lowkey on all of my Steve/Bucky mixes. I'm listening to it right now and I accidentally thought about the Infinite Coffee 'verse by owlet and now I'm cryign

My media this week (25 Sep-1 Oct 2022)
Tumblr media
🎶 🎶it's the moooost wonderful time of the year🎶 🎶
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰👂‍ Hallowe'en Party (Hercule Poirot #41) (Agatha Christie, author; Hugh Fraser, narrator) - I just really love Ariadne Oliver. Absolutely bonkers nonsense plot. So full of 'the youth today is terrible' stuff but for some reason I just find it amusing in this
🥰👂‍ A Little Light Mischief (The Turners #3.5) (Cat Sebastian, author; Morag Sims, narrator) - adore this novella about Molly (former thief, now lady's maid) & Alice (wrongfully disowned) who team up to be gay and do crime (as reparative justice)
🥰 Stately Homes of Wiltshire (waspabi) - Drarry, 57K, more magical house stuff, on the more lighthearted side (but not without its share of angst)
🥰👂‍ The Body In The Library (Miss Marple #2) (Agatha Christie, author; Stephanie Cole, narrator) - Stephanie Cole is the perfect narrator for Miss Marple
😍 This, You Protect (Infinite Coffee & Protection Detail #1) (owlet) - 64K, recovering WS Stucky, one of the preeminent classics in the Stucky fandom featuring Cat Eleanor, The Olds, grilled cheeses and sheep pj pants - reread because it's been over 2 years
😍 Team-Building Exercises (Infinite Coffee & Protection Detail #2) (owlet) - 22K, vignettes and short one-shots of the first year of recovery after contact; delightful on its own but made to wrap around the longer sequel
💖💖 +223K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
all i need from you (is all your love) (wearing_tearing) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 34K - just a sweet canon-divergent AU with two loveable dumbasses falling for each other
Behind the Lens and Eye of the Beholder (rhysiana) - TW: Sterek, 2K & 8K - AU where Derek is a landscape photographer - the first is their meet cute, the 2nd is their camping and photography date; a truly delightful AU
Here Lies Steve Rogers, Death By Bucky Barnes (fingerprintbruises) - MCU: Stucky, 11K - oblivious friends/roommates to lovers via accidental dick pics
Keep It for Me (stereobone) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 9K - no one's seen Eddie for 7 years since he was whisked off to witness protection but he resurfaces again for Lucas & Max's wedding

I'm going with 10 All Time Classics from the Captain America (MCU) fandom. I mean, they're all classics to me, at least. In no particular order:
1. This, You Protect by owlet
First installment in the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series, which are all amazing. It's a “Bucky escaping Hydra and rebuilding his sense of self” fic, which he does while spying on Steve. With eventual Avengers Family and a lovely cast of OCs bonding with Bucky in the meantime. It has a very distinctive perspective and writing style; Bucky's in constant internal (and sometimes accidentally external) dialogue with himself, making it hilarious and tragic all at the same time. I love it. I've recently been getting into The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and this Bucky has a similar sassy-but-vulnerable vibe? Read this if you like that, anyway.
2. The One Who Knows by Dira Sudis (dsudis)
This is a Political Animals AU, in that no-powers Steve is inserted into the Political Animals world and Bucky is TJ. Discusses being outed and depression but is ultimately hopeful. The author is one of my all time faves and has written lots of great stories for this and many other fandoms.
3. Blue Scales by chaya
Steve is a merman AU. He's still Captain America, though. It's crack with heart, I love it.
Best line: "May your scales and your love story be our weird secret forever.”
4. Our Lingering Frost by eyres
AU where Bucky is rescued from Hydra in the 50s (?) and so is around for Steve to be found.
5. Assets Out of Containment by follow_the_sun
It's a classic to *me*, OK? Bucky goes undercover at Jurassic World just as that movie's plot kicks off. They're Hydra dinosaurs! It's just great. Also has a podfic and crossovers with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
6. Not Easily Conquered (series) by dropdeaddream and WhatAreFears
Some of the greatest fanfiction I've ever read, the whole series is epic. Anyway, it's a "Steve doesn't go into the ice" AU with added queer angst when (never sent) love letters from Bucky resurface. I particularly like the second installment in the series The Thirteen Letters, which are just Bucky's letters and are insanely well-written.
7. to memory now I can't recall by Etharei
Time travel AU! Featuring post-CATWS Bucky accidentally switching places with CATFA era Bucky.
8. If Wishing Made It So by Leveragehunters (Monkeygreen)
Genie!Bucky AU! This author is great at writing AUs with fantasy/genre elements, it was hard to choose. They've also written an excellent werewolf!Steve AU and a horse!Steve AU that I really love.
9. Into That Good Night by Nonymos
An Interstellar AU! Very angsty and tragic but with an eventual happy ending.
10. Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by Speranza
Speranza must be one of the best writers in the fandom, so it was hard to pick just one of their fics. Other strong contenders were All the Angels and the Saints and The Fifties, so check those out too! But this one has a special place in my heart. Steve, Tony and Natasha accidentally time travel to WW2 London, leading to an accidental run-in with CATFA-era Bucky. The author does tragic and romantic time travel tropes so well, but with a happy ending.
I now realise that most of these are AUs, so here’s a bonus rec for a non-AU in-universe story that’s severely underrated and deserves more love:
+1
Heart, Have No Pity on this House of Bone by Sena
This story follows Bucky in-action in the Pacific Theatre. It’s very well written and, from what I can tell, well researched. Steve only appears in Bucky’s imagination and the story focuses on the horrors of war rather than romance, but it’s gripping! And it explores unrequited love, being closeted and period-typical homophobia, which I also enjoyed. I’m still holding out hope for a sequel.

on introductions.
If we're to start anywhere in this story, perhaps we should start here: a camera shot, tightly held, focused on a a hand scribbling furiously in a notebook. There's little to note regarding the hand: a claudaugh ring on one finger, nails tidly trimmed, cuticles pushed back. The only speck in site are faint droplets of ink dotting the hand in question's fingers.
Let the camera pull up, tracing the tight bent tension of a arm, a beast poised to spring. Note too, the casual blazer, bearing all the marks of a fresh ironing. In the background of the shot lies a bag, only half unpacked, closet hanging open as well. Clothes dot the bed in blobs of color, and a handful of books lie on the desk in riotous lumps. And finally, the camera focuses on the face of the figure— a woman in thought, her forehead pinched, mouth set in a firm line.
Vivien sits in her room, hair pulled back into a meticulous bun, scribbling at her notebook. It was a ritual of sorts, a way of pulling herself back into herself, reminding her of the things that mattered in the here and now. The words themselves are practically illegible, shorthand sentiments of neuroses still at hand— you're capable, okay? also, it's nice to meet new people, you haven't gotten the chance in ages.
And so on and so forth. Finding the ritual done, she tosses the notebook and pen into a tote, flinging it over her shoulder. She had opted for being her polished self today— the blouse and blazer de-wrinkled with the old bathroom trick that had saved her in grad school, earrings in a subtle silver, every bit of her the thing that she knew she could be— that she knew she was.
That thing being a sure and steady gaze, an infinite patience, an eye for balance. Or at least, that was what she hoped to tell the others.
At the coffee shop, she pauses, folds her hands in front of her just so. There's something almost nostalgic about a huddle of people, crowded around a table too small for them. Some of them ping points of recollections— names and faces settling like film on the surface of memory. Others feel like a knife pick— memory blasted into desolation, bile rising in her stomach. She swallows it, forces her smile, holds back her shoulders.
"Hi, you're the rest of the team, right? I'm Vivien Jiāng, previously a Junior Archivist for RAISA at Site-7."
She cuts her teeth on the previously, allows herself to concede how strange it feels. That was then, this is now. A hand curls protectively around the strap of her tote bag, finger idly rubbing against the texture of it, reminding herself to stay grounded.
"But I suppose you should know me as Au Fait. That's my callsign, anyway. It's supposed to mean something about having knowledge."
It feels dangerously close to a lie, what she says (or at least, a lie to her). After all, French courses for the entirety of college meant she knew the meaning, held the detailed knowledge that the name implied. But she couldn't give a lecture. That had gone disastrously the last time she'd tried to talk about that language.
"I worked with maintaining the digital SCP archives and catching discrepancies in them, as well as helping general SCiPNET upkeep and data issues. Think of me as a computer guy who loves excel sheets and the smell of old paper, and you should have a good idea of what my last five or so years looked like."
She glances over at the counter, smile weakening faintly. She'd fully forgotten to have food before this, hadn't she?
"Um— I do want to meet all of you, but do you mind if I grab a coffee first?"

in my personal opinion, James Buchanan Barnes is at his most accurate when he is written with DID after Winter Soldier. I say this as a person who at one point probably had DID (merged all the heccin people a few years back, so it’s not like I can get that diagnosed now) I am objectively correct and you should all thank me. But like. All the fics that follow this premise? Solid gold. Coffee and Infinite Protection Detail. Aint No Grave. I’m looking for more but there are so few enlightened out there.
