Sam could never describe in words, nor picture clearly to himself, what he felt or thought that night, though it remained in his memory as one of the chief events of his life. The nearest he ever got was to say: 'Well, sir, if I could grow apples like that, I would call myself a gardener. But it was the singing that went to my heart, if you know what I mean.'
Frodo sat, eating, drinking, and talking with delight; but his mind was chiefly on the words spoken. He knew a little of the elf-speech and listened eagerly. Now and again he spoke to those that served him and thanked them in their own language. They smiled at him and said laughing: 'Here is a jewel among hobbits!'

i know gil-galad son of andreth and aegnor is A Thing but what about gildor inglorion son of andreth and aegnor. passed to finrod when he was yet very young, and andreth was beginning to struggle keep his lineage a secret. few questions are asked at nargothrond; finrod has a habit of fostering beorian children of whose parents he is fond, for weeks or months or years. it is no great thing to them, and their lord's private business, besides. so when the poor thing's parents perished in that terrible accident (mortals are so fragile, you see) of course he would take the child in and install him as a permanent part of his household. they don't recall his parent's names, and a profound grief flashes over the king's face whenever the subject is brought up, so they simply call him the son of the golden-haired one. at least one of his parents must have shared his hair color, after all, and even if they didn't, finrod is his adoptive father, in a sense. after enough time and tragedy they forget that he is meant to be mortal. no one questions that he does not age or die as the centuries pass. how much he knows of his own parentage is questionable.
he does know that he is the last of finrod's house in middle-earth.

I love the silm fandom for making every elf with unknown origins Maglor. Lindir? That's Maglor! Erestor? Maglor of course! What about Gildor then, huh? Finrod is his cousin!

If there are a million haters of Gildor Inglorion I am one of them, if there are three I am one of them, if there is only one then I am that hater and if there are none then I have been killed, possibly because I asked Gildor Inglorion for advice during my harrowing martyr's journey and he refused to give me any because he's way too special and busy to do so (he is literally having a picnic in the woods right now) (he just told me not sentences ago that he and his friends are straight up chilling before they have to sail to heaven) (his lackey also said I'm boring) and then I got sniffed out by an undead wraith hellbent on my demise and I was horrifically murdered, fully dooming the world to misery, enslavement and ruin.

Gildor and Lindir knew many songs he had never heard of.
They were sometimes sad, sometimes beautiful, sometimes they were complete nonsense. The latter kind of songs were Gildor's speciality and he sang them with his friends as a greeting whenever guests strayed into the valley.
Most songs, however, no matter what their tone, carried with them a certain kind of longing. They were about things of old, about heroes and heroines, about great deeds and adventures. Sometimes, when he listened to Lindir sing in the Hall of Fire and closed his eyes, he would see them in his mind and his chest would tighten painfully at the memories. Even if it was only a song about something very simple like the rivers and streams.
Worse, however, for him, were pieces that were about the immortal lands. They aroused homesickness in him like never before, not even in his last life. He couldn't help but look west then, full of longing and hopefulness.
Sometimes Glorfindel would sing himself. Songs from his own childhood that had no trace of longing because the concept had been foreign to everyone back then; but he quickly grew tired of them, for these times had long since passed, the memory of them made his soul feel heavy.
Apparently everything in those times was full of longing.

hc that gildor inglorion is the son of gelmir?? we know he's of the house of finrod, and "gildor son of gwindor" sounds cooler, but poor gwindor never got that far fhdbfjf 😩
so gildor son of gelmir, who is imprisoned and then brutally killed at the start of the nirnaeth arnoediad, which spurs his brother gwindor into charging ahead of schedule. and then miserable gwindor making it back to nargothrond to find little gildor now fatherless and unable to recognise his uncle 😔

Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finarfin
What if Gildor is in fact Finrod and Amarie's son, who a some point mid-to-late-SA traveled back to Middle-Earth? Maybe he went with Glorfindel upon his return, or maybe he fought in the War of Wrath and just stayed in Middle-Earth. Of course, he decided to stay with his aunt and cousin, which led to him eventually working for Galadriel and Elrond.
Evidence to support this: early drafts suggest he's a native Quenya speaker. He says "we are Exiles". Finrod almost definitely has a bunch of kids in Valinor now. It's possible for someone to return to Beleriand, and if he's old enough to fight in the War of Wrath, he was definitely there with his father and grandfather in battle. Also he seems really proud of his heritage- he doesn't introduce himself just as Gildor, or Gildor of Imladris. No, he's "Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finarfin."

I love all the different Gil-Galad theories, and would like to submit another for consideration: All of them are true at once because “Gil-Galad” is actually a group project consisting of a bunch of 4th/5th generation Finwëans all working together to play professional “dodge the Noldorin kingship.”
So sometime during the War of Wrath, Ereinion (Fingon’s son), Artanáro (Finrod’s son), Finellach (Orodreth’s son), Finduilas (very much alive and not pinned to a tree with a spear!), and a very competent Elf of no particular lineage who has nevertheless become a de facto leader by merit and has thus been given the name “Finwain” because he reminds people of a young Finwë, all wash up on Balar.
They realize that their collective existence puts the Exiles in something of a succession crisis, an over-abundance of heirs, if you will. Fortunately, they have all learned a great deal from the lessons of their parents/grandparents/relatives/House of Finwë in general, and the actual problem is that none of them really wants to be king, especially Ereinion who has already been ruling as one but who has disliked nearly every minute of it and was rather hoping that one of his cousins would come take over or at least give him a hand.  He really, really misses Idril so much, who was the real if unofficial Queen of the Noldor in Exile until she sailed.
This gives bright young Finwain an idea: kingship by committee.  They’ll name a king, but really the name is just a stand-in for the lot of them working together.  This way, the Noldor get a figurehead, they can pool their different strengths and make up for each other’s weaknesses, and no one person has to be king alone.
Thus “Gil-Galad” is born.  They decide on the name (”Star of Radiance”) as an homage to Idril (”Sparkling Brilliance”), the first Gil-Galad in spirit if not in name.
Ereinion has already been ruling as a Noldor king and he’s got the nearest claim as Fingon’s son so he’s their “face” guy.  Finwain is excellent with the day-to-day administration and dealing justice.  Artanáro has studied law and economics and politics and is quite good at the statecraft and politicking part of things.  Finellach is a marvellous diplomat.  Finduilas is the best manager in a crisis, who will decide on a course of action and get it done with ruthless determination while everyone else is still dithering, and she’s also become terrifyingly good at foreign policy to boot.
Galadríel thinks the lot of them have gone around the bend, but that may be because she was not invited to be a Gil-Galadríel when the name practically writes itself, c’mon.  They didn’t ask Celebrimbor either, for obvious reasons but he wouldn’t have accepted anyways.  Elrond is even more adept at dodging crowns and argues very convincingly that he has exactly one Noldorin grandparent whom he never met and that if he really had to pick a lineage, he’d go Sindar first, Man (Númenorean) second, and Noldor a distant fifth or sixth.  They ask Celebrían when she comes of age, partly to irritate Galadríel and mostly because Finduilas would really like another female cousin on the team, but she has far too much common sense to accept.
Surprisingly, it all works out very well.  Finwain and Artanáro have the running of the kingdom down pat between the pair of them.  Finellach manages to make friends and build alliances with nearly everyone, and anyone he can’t charm, he just sics Elrond on them because it’s impossible not to become friends with Elrond.  Ereinion gets their defences into tip-top shape because it might be a new Age but you don’t survive the First Age and remain complacent.  Finduilas takes care of their affairs abroad as well as any crises at home, and is the first person to distrust Annatar when he shows up on their doorstep.
Sometimes they disagree with each other.  Fortunately, there are an odd number of them so there are never any ties when they have to vote (no one is allowed to abstain).  Anything serious that they really cannot come to a consensus on, they lock themselves in an inner room decorated with a special tapestry that Finduilas had commissioned of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.  That’s usually enough of a pointed reminder about how the best-intended unions can come to ruin if they don’t manage to meet as one on the same ground.
At the end of the Second Age, they collectively agree that the Noldor in Middle-earth don’t need any more High Kings.  Anyways, it's difficult to carry on as Gil-Galad without Ereinion ever since he died nobly and publicly in the Last Alliance.  Finellach decides to sail.  Finduilas goes East on a long vacation to see all the rest of Middle-earth.  Artanáro also decides to take a long vacation and goes larking around Middle-earth in a Wandering Company.  Finwain retires to the Havens and settles down to help Círdan build ships.
And they all lived happily ever after.  Even Ereinion, who almost beat Finrod’s record of coming back from the Halls of Mandos and who promptly became a champion sprinter when an intrigued Finarfin started asking if he thought this kingship by committee idea could work for the Noldor in Aman.

“For so long I stood with your choices, Amil. But I can no longer look away, not when you have gone too far.” In his reddened eyes was a flicker of fury, of grief. Shards of a breaking heart. “Whether acting under the Oath or spurred on by your own demons, what you did was unforgivable.”
He touched Gildor’s shoulder and turned his brother away, though the boy twisted for one lasted tearful look at Curufin. But Celebrimbor would not turn, even as he walked away. He knew what sight awaited him should he give in to the need for one last glimpse of his mother.
Standing alone in the center of the hall, a dark shadow staining the white stone of Nargothrond. This place that had been home had been tainted, violated. Curufin was proud—even if in the wrong she would not admit to anything. There would be no regret in those hard eyes, not for the blood on her hands. Not for sending her own husband to his death.
No, Celebrimbor would not look back.
