Ok, a friend of mine sent me the original Naruto databooks and there are some things I'd like to discuss with you now. Focusing on the characters of Sakura and Hinata we see that their favorite thing is literally the boy they claim to be in love with. Oh my God, not even Minato and Kushina or the other couples are at this level! Even in the case of Hinata he says that since she was little she has always loved Naruto and liked to look at him from afar (going by logic to the exclusion, how the heck can you already love at the age of 4??! and yet they want me to believe that Naruto in OG only had a crush on Sakura while with Hinata we already talk about love without even knowing the person or having interacted with him a few times. Oh well, we've said it all). Regarding Sakura we see that her favorite thing is Sasuke enveloped in black flames? That is, basically, the darker Sasuke is, the more he loves him? what the hell? This is literally called obsession or rather, a psychologist would say the so-called "Stockholm syndrome", I always wonder what Sakura's parents would have thought in seeing their daughter choose the man who tried to kill her over the one always at her side ( no, I don't care if Sasuke wasn't himself, it's still an attempted murder and ok, you may even be willing to forgive but no self-respecting woman would continue to love a man who tried to kill her several times) and yet, d' on the other hand, we see that in the side with Naruto the relationship between the two is always described in a positive way until the end, that from an initially annoying person he ended up being important to her and that she wants to protect her dream until the end to thank him for having her always loved and protected (oh right, it was just a red herring and the two were just supposed to be friends in the end; ironic given that in Gaiden and Boruto they aren't even that anymore and can barely call each other acquaintances. Anyone who watches Naruto and then follows Boruto can seriously think of watching two totally different series). Furthermore, returning to the NH and NS in the Naruto databook only Sakura's confession in the land of iron appears, nothing is mentioned regarding Hinata's confession or the handshake for Neji's death (this already makes it clear how much the character is was important in the protagonist's life but ok, he was a NH from the beginning, the salty fans are us who read the wrong manga). Ironic that Naruto's favorite thing is Ichraku's ramen (NaruRamen canon since the beginning ehehe) and Sasuke's is him as a kid (I knew Sasuke was a narcissist and only loves himself ahahaha). I have nothing else to say, just state the obvious once again that pro-enders try to justify everything just because their ship is canon

Initial D Gaiden
Mail call! Here's another japanese exclusive Game Boy game tied-in with a 90s manga/anime. Compared to the ones already featured in this blog this is a bit of a cheat, because the original source was never localized for Italy; nevertheless I've been looking to add Initial D Gaiden to my collection for personal reasons. Back when I used to play several Stepmania clones I got enamoured with two particular tracks, Space Boy and Running In The 90s; wanting to search for more content of the same genre, I googled Initial D convinced it was the name of the author, instead a nipponic rabbit hole opened up before me. And I nosedived into it!
Drawn by mangaka Shuichi Shigeno, Initial D is a seinen ("geared towards an adult male audience") telling the story of Takumi Fujiwara, high schooler working part time as a delivery boy for his father Bunta, a tofu manifacturer. Takumi is an excellent driver, having practiced since childhood with the family car, a Toyota AE86; a few of his friends who are very into street racing therefore decide to arrange a challenge between him and the local team of drifters, the Red Suns. Speeding down the Akina mountain, Takumi wins race after race and gets more involved with the subculture. His passion will also make him choose between racing and love and discover a side of Bunta's past.
The comic started in 1995 and had a long run of 48 tankobons until 2003. The anime began airing in 1998 on Fuji Television and had a total of five seasons, along with several OAVs and a feature film which require to be watched in a certain order along with the main series to get the best of the story. I'd say it's one of the staples of 2000-era anime, as its production spanned througout the whole decade and the last season is dated 2014 (although, due to its context, it is usually referred to as "the ultimate 90's anime"). It is also a clear example of the "generational shift" this industry developed, as the first season is a typical late 90s anime with painted backgrounds and hand-drawn cels, while the later ones exclusively employ computer graphics. Other features that make Initial D recognizable is Shigeno's "ugly-ish" style, with narrow eyes and pronounced lips, that found a better balance over time; and, as mentioned before, the iconic eurobeat soundtrack made by actual artists of the industry, which are still active now and have italian origins (remember when I said Italy and Japan are particularly close? Yyyeah).
Anyways, the legend of Takumi Fujiwara never had a chance to get famous here in Italy as Shin Vision, the company who bought the rights of both anime and manga, went out of business before they could print out any translated volume. Only the first 16 anime episodes (not even the whole first season) managed to show up in DVD store shelves, and a few of these got broadcasted by MTV in the mid 2000s.
Personally, I found the first season to be a nice "coming-of-age" story, with Takumi and friends experiencing the last exams before graduation, the first ventures into joblife, and of course the main theme of discovering a passion and making a lifestyle out of it. The first season also has quite a few relationship subplots with the characters trying to get themselves a girlfriend, and there's the "sometimes-awkward-sometimes-tragic" love between Takumi and the mysterious Natsuki. The other seasons are of course essential if the viewer wants to know the destiny of the legenday AE86, but they all mostly focus on the race battles themselves and do get repetitive overtime. I suppose they would cacth the interest of car fanatics at least.
But alas, we're here to talk about the Game Boy game, which actually concerns the first season only. In fact, while Initial D games usually thrive in arcade form, Takumi's first venture into the world of virtual entertainment was exactly this cartridge. Maybe this is the exact reason why it's surprisingly sought after on online markets, with prices surpassing the hundreds in case of a boxed sale. Yikes o.o
Even the "cartridge-only" listings are usually over 70€, which took me aback great time. I wasn't really expecting such prices for an anime tie-in, considering pretty much all the other ones I've bought so far seemed forgotten enough to justify the usual 5-10€ price range. I suppose the popularity Initial D gained with the eurobeat/drifting memes also helped inflate its prices tenfold. I failed twice to secure myself a listing that was selling it for about 20€, so this time when the planets aligned, I got enough extra money and sale coupons to get a copy at about 40€. Dun care. Money well spent: got my holy grail.
Initial D Gaiden has been published by Kodansha (sounds familiar?) in 1998: it's obviously a driving game, yet it also features faint elements from visual novels due to the multiple plots one can choose and the story behind it. At the start of the game, a rather barebones menu will let us choose to play "career mode" with one of the four main characters: Itsuki (the protagonist's childhood friend), Bunta, Natsuki (a surprising addition since she doesn't drive in the anime) and Takumi. We then choose our preferred car: interestingly, there are no fixed character+vehicle combinations, so we can give the legendary HachiRoku to a noob like Itsuki or let Takumi drive the Mazda originally owned by his archnemesis. After that we alternate between comicbook-like dialogue scenes and the racing levels which, faithful to the original source, are speed-downs through the twist and turns of mountain courses, therefore only lasting one lap until one of the drivers has reached the valley. It features manual gear shift (weirdly controlled by the D-Pad which is also needed to steer- awful choice) and graphically speaking: it's alright. Nothing groundbreaking. I think the saddest aspect of the racing levels is the lack of eurobeat soundtrack, I guess it was either that or the sound of the engine. Time to take out your stereos and blast Deja Vu while playing!

Cyber Shadow is scheduled to be released in fall 2020 "Cyber Shadow is a 2D ninja action game published by the makers of Shovel Knight". It was released on Janufor PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows. In the "Yacht Club Games Presents" on February 26, 2020, it was revealed that the game would release in 2021, and that the Shovel Knight Amiibo would be compatible with the Nintendo Switch version of the game. The game was first shown at PAX East 2019, though it was announced less publicly earlier. In an interview with Siliconera, he said that "he story is about exploiting carefully nurtured ancient knowledge with logic" as a reason why it involves both ancient ninjas and futuristic robots. Hunziker has described the game as one that combines "the level design principles of Mario, the skills and action of Ninja Gaiden, the enemy designs of Contra and the dark visual aesthetic of Batman", but has also said that it is more deliberately intended as a callback to Shadow of the Ninja. He has had continued difficulties with the development of the game due to its scope and having to do it almost entirely alone. Four years later he began coding from scratch what would become Cyber Shadow. He later decided to create his own game, but scrapped it. Hunziker's first experience in game development was hacking the ROMs of classic games to manipulate their visuals, effectively customizing them. Although most of the development is handled by Hunziker, the music will be composed by Enrique Martin and produced by Jake Kaufman in addition to their usual role as a publisher, Yacht Club is giving design feedback from their previous experience developing Shovel Knight. Aarne Hunziker, having already been developing the game for years on his own, initially had no intention of teaming up with a publisher he was first discovered by Yacht Club while posting about the ongoing development on Twitter, and later was convinced by them to "join little family".

Cyber-Shadow sets out to defeat him so that he can free her spirit from her dying body and reunite with her in the Ethos, the spiritual realm.Ĭyber Shadow was developed by Mechanical Head Studios, a team consisting purely of the creator Aarne Hunziker, and published by Yacht Club Games. Shadow discovers that the Master was dying of a mysterious spiritual disease, and her father, in a mad scheme to save her life, attacked the city with his synthetic army and betrayed the Clan so as to drain their mystical powers, and use the drained energy to keep his daughter alive. His ultimate goal is to find the Master of the clan, with whom the original human Shadow had a seemingly romantic relationship. Shadow travels across Mekacity, fighting the cybernetic beings as well as a traitor from his ninja clan called Apparitor, and ends his captured clanmates lives to free their spirits. It is set in the ruins of the fictional Mekacity. The game's plot follows Shadow, a cyborg ninja who sets out to free his fallen clan from synthetic lifeforms harvesting them for their powers. The game's story is told primarily through cinematic cutscenes, though in-engine ones are used as well. It features an 8-bit aesthetic which shares similarities to Shatterhand and contains several gameplay elements of Shadow of the Ninja, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Castlevania and similar games, which include snaking paths and occasional backtracking. Cyber Shadow is a side-scrolling platforming game in which players control a ninja character who battles enemies with a sword and various special abilities acquired as subweapons.

chocolate box recs
chocolate box is open! go, go, enjoy the delicious chocolatey goodness of this challenge.
i'm enjoying it a whole lot - both my recip and my treatee liked their fics (if you spot me, i'll write you a drabble of your choosing! one book, one webnovel)
and i've gotten a completely delightful gift for the sleuth of ming dynasty, a beautifully tender and intimate moment between sui zhou and tang fan that explores everything that's delightful about their relationship:
Joining, in the Candlelight (成化十四年 | The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty)
It's been a long night, and all Sui Zhou wants is a bath and Tang Fan.
and also a smattering of recs from all over the collection:
life is endlessly delicious (The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty)
Five tastes of how Tang Fan and Sui Zhou's relationship was discovered.
really excellent summary of relationship, in five povs.
In the Reaches (Books of the Raksura - Martha Wells)
It's a warm, calm day in the Reaches, Moon and Chime takes a rest under the canopy.
gorgeous fanart!
art: curse swallower (Original Work)
Cursed Female Knight/Swamp Witch - "I can take your curse, for a price."
really, really beautiful linework.
A Small Chance of Happiness (The Goblin Emperor)
"You need our marriage," Vedero Drazhin said to Maia one spring night when they were pressed together on the rooftop, using Vedero's telescope to examine a comet that was visiting their night sky.
that's such a sweet story, and i think it hits very well on the defining theme of the book as i see it - how kindness begets kindness begets kindness, slowly transforming the world around maia. i really love the careful code-switching too, formal and informal, an emperor and a subject, a brother with his older sister, back and forth - it's so careful, and so tender. i'm glad vedero took this risk, along with maia.
Mostly Fine (Vorkosigan Saga)
Gregor held the paper bag in one hand with the slightly befuddled air of a man who had never been handed fast food before. "This is... a burger," he said. "Yeah," Ivan said. "If you keep staring it will go cold. I already had to show it to your security detail."
After the events of The Vor Game, Ivan comes to visit Gregor.
awwww, ivan.
The Sharp End (My Next Life as a Villainess)
She really didn't need further swordsmanship lessons, but she definitely needed an appropriate venue in which to practice. "I think this competition will do nicely, don't you?"
katarina, in a breeches, with a sword in her hand. katarina's harem, especially giordo: REALLY happy.
Each Breath You Take Is a Brand New Begin (Saiyuki)
Gojyo's getting tired of his houseguest. But things are about to change.
a different take on hakkai and goyjo's meeting: they start in a different place and end up in the same one. really great character voices, too.
No Me Without You (Saiyuki Gaiden)
When Kenren is seriously injured, Tenpou comes face to face with his feelings about "that person."
really beautiful and understated grasp of tenpou's voice, and excellent whump.
Here There Be Dragons (Discworld)
Sam Vimes didn't know what he'd done in life to deserve Lady Sybil Ramkin. He held her in the highest esteem for being everything that he wasn't.
Unfortunately, the settee might not survive the enthusiasm of his esteem tonight.
sybil and sam finally get it on, and it's delightful :D
A Bit of Fuss (Benjamin January)
Rose missed the initial commotion because she was teaching a mathematics lesson at the time.
"I've had worse," Shaw said.
"You have no idea how alarming that is to hear," Ben told him.
Most Musical, Most Melancholy (Aubreyad)
Would he die? Was he in fact dying right at this moment? And Jack not there?
Jack forcibly steadied himself. He thought of Stephen's heart beating beneath his hand. Rapid, straining, like a—
—like a trapped bird. He looked up. At once he saw, tangled in a line, a pale and blotched little bundle, feebly thrashing.
stephen falls; jack frets. amazing grasp of voices, amazing pastiche, everything great about canon stirred and mixed together.

Star Wars Knights of The Old Repbulic II Review
Release Date: NA; 6th December 2004 (Xbox) 8th February  2005 (PC) EU; 11th February 2005 (Xbox & PC)
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: LucasArts
Tumblr media
I had gotten my Xbox Christmas of 2004. It was the crystal one too and I had been wanting one all year. I kinda spoilt the surprise for myself though because in a poorly chosen hiding spot by my parents I found the crystal box poking out of a bag. It was torture to occasionally look at it and do nothing with it but gawk and wait until Christmas and almost feign a reaction to it. Sorry mum and dad…
But Knights of the Old Republic II was the third game I got myself? I think? First two I can remember were Ninja Gaiden and Soul Calibur 2… let’s just say Kotor 2 was the third game I got for myself.
So I went down to Game, saw the cover with that haunting image of Darth Nihilus on the front, nabbed it, got home, played it for the weekend and got bored of it… Shamefully. There were parts that I liked but it played so differently to other action games I was already accustomed to at the time it threw me off. Little did I know how much of an RPG it was and the action was so different to what I was used to.
The initial problem I had with this game was it didn’t meet my expectations of what I wanted out of a Star Wars game, especially one where I knew you could create your own character and make them Sith or Jedi. Perfectly what I wanted. But after playing it for 12 hours and still on Telos and still without a lightsaber, I lost patience with it and gave up. How foolish my 13 year old self was. I then traded it in and got something else instead. If I remember right they even had Kotor there as well…
But so ignorantly did I miss out on one of the greatest games and greatest Star Wars games of my budding teenage years that it wasn’t until 5 years later I gave it another try and since then it might be one of my most played games without even realising it.
I got it again on the Xbox, played through it with a video walkthrough and I completed it. Although this first run through felt a little disconnected because I was almost playing it alongside the video and didn’t fully experience it all myself with my own choices and completely understanding what choices I was making. But the fact was I completed it regardless, I got my damn lightsaber—lightsabers even! Goddamn plural!—and loved the characters and every moment of it. The story was completely different to any other Star Wars story I was accustomed to which delved into themes I didn’t fully understand yet, but I loved it all the same.
I loved the planets, the characters, the combat I grew to love, the music, the voice acting, the twists, the scope it all conveyed and perspective it gave on the force and the Sith and what it is to be Jedi. All of it influenced me even and inspired my own Star Wars stories I want to write.
Since then I have played and completed it 3 more times. Once more on the Xbox, a save on the 360 I completed and a Sith run I started, and recently on PC. I’ve only ever completed it as a Jedi and the Sith run I still haven’t completed after… 6 years now I think? Maybe? Probably longer than that. But the best thing about all the times I’ve completed it is that as much as I have tried to stay close to what I will always do in the games I have always gotten a different outcome in the end. I’ve had an ending where no one survived, where some survived, and where everyone survived, and another where all survived but Atton died. And I know next time I play through it again I’m going to get another ending completely different. That’s the best thing about this I think, that each ending isn’t guaranteed to be the same even if you play close to the same as before.
So, how this game plays. It’s space D&D. The game uses a d20 system so it was akin to playing Star Wars D&D.  You can even see these roll stats in the game in the journal, message log and combat filter. Kotor also used this system. And you know what? The system works. Not only for its combat mechanics but for its character creation. You can have more freedom to play about how you want to build your character and class as you level up.
Want to be a Jedi Knight? Consular? Sentinel? Just be a Scoundrel or Scout and be allergic to lightsabers? (Weirdo, how would you not want a lightsaber?) A Techie? Sith Lord? Jedi Master? Sith Assassin? All these classes and builds gives such freedom and variety it begs for multiple playthroughs with its open ended opportunities for how you want to make this story go and develop your character. You can go on with a single lightsaber or sling dual lightsabers, optionally with a short lightsaber in your off hand (it works better that way), or go all Maul and swing about a double edged lightsaber, mow down rebel and Mandalorian scum with a mini minigun. You can rely solely on force powers and go all Palpy or completely ignore using the force and stick to your guns. (Seriously, why not use the force or lightsabers? Goddamn weirdo you are.)
You get a multitude of gear to equip that can help out your stats further, naturally. And you can modify your own lightsaber! When you’re on Dantooine, the home of the Jedi Academy that has long since been abandoned, you can delve into the Jedi caves that house the crystals that all blossoming Jedi in training go to when it comes time to build your own lightsaber. And in this crystal cavern you can find your own special character specific crystal. Of course you can find other crystals in this cave to help power up your lightsaber and other colours (I’ve always gone dual orange and yellow), but this crystal holds a special connection for your character both narratively and gameplay wise. As a gameplay mechanic; when you level up or change alignment from light to dark, or just get lighter and become Keanu Reeves or more darker and go goth, you can take the crystal out of your lightsaber, take it to Kreia and she will enhance it to better reflect your character’s growth. So if you’re majoratively light you can gain more damage to dark side, or if you’re dark you gain more damage to light, more attack power, more damage etc.
As a narrative device, it works for the Exile’s lost connection from the force.
Which, now I think it’s time to get to the main appeal of this game.
Tumblr media
Knights of the Old Republic II is possibly the best Star Wars story ever told next to Knights of the Old Republic and the films themselves.
You play as The Exile, a Jedi exiled by the Jedi council because you chose to defy them and go to war with Revan and Malak against the Mandalorians before they slaughtered everyone. The bastards. Who’s the bastards? The Jedi council or the Mandalorians? Maybe both? You be the judge.
Seriously, you get to decide who the bastards are. Disagree with the council? Agree with them? Resentfully chose to fight the Mandalorians? Or gleefully sided with them and fell to the dark side because everyone are bastards and you wanna watch the galaxy burn?
Hell, maybe you’re the bastard…
Anyway!
That’s all you’re given. You get to weave your own story throughout this. If you’ve played the first Kotor then you know the deal with Revan and Malak. If you’ve read the Revan book as well then you will know too that this Exile is canonically Meetra Surik. You can make and choose whoever you want easily. Want to be Revan again even? Go for it. But she’s the main character of this story and it finishes on the light side.
As Meetra, you wake up on a Peragus mining facility in your undies with amnesia. You run into a cranky old woman called Kreia and an imprisoned dodgy scoundrel named Atton. You eventually come across this game’s resident R2, T3-M4, returning from Kotor. You escape the doomed planet with the repaired Ebon Hawk-- also back from Kotor-- as the Sith arrive, who is led by the walking zombie Darth Sion. You arrive on Telos, get your barings, either help some environmental Ithorians or corporate Czerka, solve a few security cases before you’re off and on your way to the big wide galaxy ahead and the story opens up.
Tumblr media
Now, you’re being chased by Darth Sion because he and Darth Nihilus believe you to be the last of the Jedi (ha.) But you are not! Your task is to find the remaining hidden Jedi masters and, depending on your alignment, gather them together at the ruins of the Jedi Academy on Dantooine or kill them.
Along the way you’re going to meet new party members and Kreia will train you in the ways of the force.
Then, you get four planets to choose from to find these masters; Dantooine, Onderon, Korriban, and Nar Shadaa. And you can go to any of these planets in any order you like. Though, my order has always been Dantooine, Nar Shadaa, Onderon, Korriban.
Tumblr media
I’m not going to go through each planet and explain what happens and spell it all out, but you find more party members to help you along the way, find the masters and then shit unfolds in a greatly unexpected way…
Mandalore, another returning character from Kotor, at one point on the Onderon moon of Dxun has a confrontation with Kreia and tells a fellow Mandalorian “Forget the Jedi. Keep an eye on her…” Which, seriously. Keep a very close eye on Kreia, pay attention to what she says, what she does and how she can influence others. She’s the most curious of all your party members…
Tumblr media
Which, speaking of, as Kreia teaches your character and you grow and you attract more followers, you eventually get the chance to train your party members into becoming Sith or Jedi. Those who are force sensitive are the Handmaiden, Mira, Bao-Dur, Atton and the Disciple. Although, the Handmaiden is a character who you can only recruit when you play as the male. Taking Handmaiden’s place when you play female is the Disciple, someone you meet in the Jedi ruins on Dantooine.
And then comes the romance options! Because what RPG game wouldn’t have one. As the male character you get Mira, Visas and Handmaiden, and as the female you get Atton and the Disciple.
I’ve always gone the way of the male and choosing the Handmaiden. Helps she’s voice by Grey Delisle…
Anyway.
Time to get into the story more.
So, you’re trying to find these Jedi masters while running halfway across the galaxy from a zombie Sith and a gluttonous Sith.
Sion is a man who should long ago have since died, but is using the force to keep himself held together. His body is decayed and falling apart, he’s got one working eye, his voice is dried and husky. That is a man whose sheer force of rage and anger and willpower to control the force as such to keep himself together and alive is incredible. I’ve never seen something like that nor someone use the force so creatively.
And then there’s Nihilus. A man no longer who feeds on the force. A wound in the force who feeds on all life throughout the galaxy. He sees not the form of flesh and sinew in front of him, but the living force around him and all is his for the taking, to consume and draw on until there is nothing left. He is a vampiric, poisonous leech the likes of which no Sith has ever matched before. Again, something I have never seen before in how a character, or even how the game’s developers, has ever used the force, to bend it to his will and develop the force more into something greater and more mysterious and powerful than the films have ever elaborated on.
And that leads me into my next point; the force and Kreia. Which, spoilers for the twist and ending. (I know I said earlier I won’t spoil but this needs talking about! At least I’m leaving some mystery.)
Kreia is a Sith… Or is she?
Well, she is truly Darth Treya. If Sion is the Sith of pain, and Nihilus is the Sith of hunger and annihilation, then Treya is the Sith of betrayal. And therein lies the twist.
Kreia is seemingly a Jedi at first, perhaps even a grey Jedi the more you talk to her. I mean, her alignment on the character screen is permanently neutral, no matter which side you sway to the heaviest or how much you influence her. Until eventually you come to learn she was once Darth Treya, a powerful Sith Lord who once had the galaxy firmly in her grasp accompanied by her pupils Sion and Nihilus. Until those two overthrew her and imposed her into her own exile. Now, where else have we heard of that…?
So naturally, with Kreia wise to the force and of the Exile’s being, she works to control Surik and do her bidding no matter which side she may fall on. She manipulates all that occurs right up until the game’s final stage; Malachor V, the final battleground and graveyard of the Mandalorian wars, where so many Jedi died and where Meetra Surik became a wound in the force herself.
Once you have defeated Nihilus and convinced Sion to finally die and let go of the force, you face Kreia. Or, Treya, rather. And it is here you learn more about the force, its sides, its control, Treya’s motivations and the why of everything.
Tumblr media
Treya, hates the force. The reason why she does what she does is because she hates it. She wishes to see it dead and destroyed because of the hold it has on all those in life. And, as much as she betrayed Meetra Surik, she holds a special kind of love for her. She doesn’t wish her dead or any kind of harm or anything like that to have happen to her. But for her to understand more on the force.
This is where the best part of this whole game and story culminates, the reflection on the force and what the force is.
The force is a powerhouse. The force is a living beast. A galactic behemoth that is almost a deity or living entity that is all that lives. It is not these midichlorians, this kind of blood bacteria. It is not this mysterious magic. The force is an all-consuming, all controlling, all illuminating and suffocating creature that presides in everyone and everything. It controls the motion and flow of everything. It is reactive to emotion and try as they all might, the Sith and the Jedi may never really fully understand what the force is other than be a slave to it or try to control it to their will.
There was once this one interesting theory I read about what the force is and related it to a swimming pool. The Jedi only swim in the shallow to middle part of the pool. They can see how far the pool stretches and understand its breadth but dare not delve deeper into it else they get lost or drown within it, and so stay safe and respect the shallow part of the pool. While the Sith dive deep into the pool and swim far and wide into the deepest parts and soon find that it is really an ocean and discover all these other monstrous beings deep below. And that makes total sense honestly.
I love more the concept of the force being this uncontrollable being, this literal special force that is everything and there are a special number who are sensitive to it and can control and use it. And not just for magic tricks like lifting things and confusing chumps, but to use the force to manipulate, influence and shape things as sizeable as an entire galaxy. To control something on that scope with that kind of a power is intangible yet fascinating.
And so, regarding that, Treya hates that people in the galaxy might not have full control over themselves and she wishes to see the force die. And that is an immense ambition. How could you kill the force? Could you? Darth Nihilus fed on it and wiped out star systems, Meetra Surik was a wound and brought death and suffering to those around her and amassed a loyal following that fought when she fought (a very, very clever piece of writing to implement a simple game mechanic such as levelling up into the story as for each enemy you defeat or kill the stronger you become), and Sion relied on the force to live until he gave it up. There are those who rely on it who perhaps shouldn’t be around and those who are a poison with the force.
And, perhaps, even all of Treya’s ambitions aren’t really her conscious choices either? Maybe in that, the force controlled her choices because that is what the force wills and dictates…
Maybe the force wills to die too but learned it cannot…
Who knows!
It’s this writing and Sara Kestelman’s acting as the conflicted Sith Kreia which helped this game win awards and cement Kreia as one of the most recognisable and compelling video game characters ever.
And that’s another one of this game’s strengths; the voice acting. Everyone does stupendously and there’s not a wrong word put out or spoken.
Either way, Knights of the Old Republic 2 is an incredible Star Wars game and an incredible Star Wars story that is critical and self-reflective on itself, superbly creative, immersive, poignant, and did more to develop the Star Wars lore than it is recognised for.
Do yourself a favour and play it and play it again.
If you’re playing it on PC, get the Restored Content mod that fixed everything Obsidian didn’t have time to fix and which includes all cut content. Go fulfil your Sith or Jedi dreams and get lost.
I have spoken.

ARAMAKI YOSHIHIKO 08/08/18 BLOG POST TRANSLATION - Looking Back on Tousute: Hiden Yui no Me no Hototogisu
VERY VERY ROUGH TL ;; MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD!
so many typos (?) and i took liberties with most… anyway we got a very relatable boy right here… the best mknb fic ive ever had the pleasure of reading.. from the man himself. we don’t deserve him.
Read under the cut!
Tousute Hiden ended 10 days ago.
How is everyone doing?
I am currently doing Sengoku Night Blood’s rehearsals
And in other days I do a lot of other work too.
Two months
No, when you add the practice time
I did Tousute for three months
A few days after the final performance,
Somehow, there’s a suffocating, wrong, and murky feeling
I did the Nico Nico broadcast,
I was able to share even just a little of my own thoughts to everyone
That calmed [the wrong feelings] down.
Because Senbura Live has ended,
I thought I should write a looking-back blog post.
I have so many feelings over Tousute
So this might become a bit incoherent but,
Please pardon me.
And it will probably be long.
When you have the time, I would be happy if you could read it.
Then–
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Stage play Touken Ranbu Hiden Yui no Me no Hototogisu
Tousute Kyouden was two years ago.
From then
Kyouden Saien (replay)
Giden
Gaiden
Jyoden
Hiden
I have performed in them all.
I have always worked in all of the Tousute’s up until now Because I was allowed to appear.
Hiden is my 6th work [in the series].
If you count all of the performances together, a total of 178.
For a really long time, I have been in Tousute
It’s a really great honor.
By the time of Kyouden’s premiere
I have been decided to appear as Yamanbagiri Kunihiro
From there,
Mikazuki and Yamanbagiri’s story begun.
Hiroki-kun and I,
Since the rehearsals for Saien
This Tousute’s story, what kind of concept would it be
From Suemitsu-san I was allowed to hear just a little bit.
Eventually, Mikazuki and Yamanbagiri will fight.
When I heard that
“I want to do that scene already!!
But before I could do that scene, I had to do so much more first
First, I had to look ahead.
But I want to do it already!“
I had those fluttering thoughts.
I didn’t think that the ending
would turn out to be like that.
I was played. (or literally: he got me there.)
I was really surprised.
When I heard that Yamanbagiri would fight Mikazuki,
That Yamanbagiri would surpass Mikazuki,
Maybe it was a story that would show his growth
Is what I thought!
To think that he would lose.
And with a farewell, at that!!
Suemitsu-san really played [me] there.
If this ending has been planned from the very beginning of Tousute’s story,
I would like to take a look in Suemitsu-san’s head.
Just what is going on in there?
I had those thoughts while I was in rehearsals,
The real thing
The first performance in Meijiza Theater
From the stage where we practiced,
It’s a play that really exhausts your energy Is what I thought but
The amount of passion the audience has shown Further exceeded my expectations.
The people who saw it too, In such a fast pace,
Surprised,
then saddened,
I wonder if you were all tired after the performances?
I think that would be a given if you were to see something like Hiden
The citadel was attacked. Mikazuki cut Shokudaikiri down.
Our Master made an appearance.
Hasebe and Fudou came back
Mikazuki left the citadel
And lastly, Mikazuki and Yamanbagiri fought And it ends there.
I’m sure it was a story that no one saw coming.
A painful story.
Every after performance, I felt varying levels of tiredness.
One of the reasons why I felt absolutely knackered
Was because of the scene with Mikazuki.
The story’s ending,
The scene of parting with Mikazuki
I didn’t want to cry but my tears came out anyway.
Before me,
When I see the Mikazuki that is disappearing
A lot of memories will come up to me
No matter what, my tears will come up.
There were performances where I silently cried,
and performances where I was wailing and sobbing
I entrusted all of my emotions to that single moment.
A play.
No,
it was no longer just a play anymore.
I was really mourning.
In the first performance(s),
I was merely sad to be fighting Mikazuki,
But after repeatedly performing,
“I will definitely save you.”
Is what I was thinking,
while fighting and crying with my heart out.
I fought with those feelings,
Losing was saddening,
I was frustrated with my weak self
And after I bid farewell to Mikazuki,
It was also hard to part there*
I always cried in that place.
But I wasn’t allowed to cry,
so I cried backstage**
There,
The Touken Danshi and the staff will greet me,
They will pat my back and say,
“Thank you for your hard work.”
Although there was only Mikazuki, Yamanbagiri, and Kogarasumaru on stage,
We fought together in every performance,
And got better in every performance.
But you know,
I myself was waiting for Yamanbagiri’s awakened form.
Thank god…
When will Manba-chan awaken…
Not yet? Not yet? I was waiting impatiently.
It was in the end of all ends, huh.
And now is different from the past
Awakened in slow motion
I was really happy to be able to awaken in such a strong and impactful highlight
And,
To be honest, I seriously pulled up my muscles
Even in the scenes where I was normally moving,
Slowly, in the slow-motion, I used my muscles in using the sword
But during those times the slow-motion really shines through
That slow motion with awakened form,
I personally loved it.
And to the people who waited for Manba-chan’s awakened form too, I’ll be happy if you are satisfied.
With that Manba-chan who’s awakened, I won against Mikazuki.
A promise with Yamanbagiri,
Mikazuki in another loop of time.
Mikazuki Munechika who is trapped in the loop,
Just how many times have you repeated the same thing?
The same with the number of our performances?
No,
Even more?
This is only my thinking but,
Since the very first time,
Mikazuki himself is trying to change his fate and,
He might have resisted and struggled with different ones.
But
Whatever he does
No matter how much he struggles
It all seems to end the same way.
In the end, he has to become enemy to the Touken Danshi
But there is one hope found somewhere in that repeating loop
The sun that illuminates the moon.
Mikazuki said so in the performances,
susuketa taiyou. (“You’re quite the sooty sun.”)
I wonder if that was referring to Manba-chan.
That’s why in Kyouden
He tutored Manba-chan in that short time.
Inside the endless loop,
Over and over, making mistakes, amidst trials and errors
He guided Manba-chan.
To a one-on-one talk with Manba-chan, and a last farewell
Time and time again, over and over, he called for Manba-chan
He wished for a ray of sunlight.
That was probably what Mikazuki was thinking
While he suffered.
However.
The long number of performances has passed
And in the final performance,
Yamanbagiri managed to win against Mikazuki.
A divergence from the initial endings
This place too shows that Suemitsu-san is amazing.
Only,
In that final performance’s fighting scene,
I don’t remember much.
The fighting scene which was a one-off sword fight.
I wanted to show off carefully in the real thing.
But in that moment,
I lost myself in the feeling of my victory
When I came to notice, Mikazuki has already withdrawn his sword.
Together since the rehearsals
No, together since Kyouden
With Hiroki-kun, who I crossed swords with for several years
It may just be my one-sided belief
With one another,
I’ve learned to understand my partner’s breathing patterns too,
Because it was with Hiroki-kun who I’ve been through so much with,
From that, the final performance’s fighting scene was born.
That’s what I think.
I want to watch it in DVD soon.
That fighting scene.
The farewell with Mikazuki.
Mikazuki’s unbelievable fate.
The Manba-chan who has carried this burden.
Even Mikazuki is looking to the future.
Looking forward to that someday when Yamanbagiri can once again be reunited with Mikazuki.
Walking together towards Tousute’s citadel
For sure, someday.
To laugh together again with Mikazuki
For the day when that will arrive,
I’m wishing for it.
Truthfully,
For the time that the sun can illuminate the moon.
For the time that his existence can become a guiding light.
Yamanbagiri can smile then.
Will that day come, I wonder?
To appear in this production,
I,
On a crossroad, decided on my right knee’s ligament’s (ACL) surgery.
After the surgery, to not let my ligament rupture again
I paid utmost attention
I challenged the real thing
Supported by the staff and cast,
All 53 performances.
I was able to finish them all without injury.
But the fight with rehabilitation and weight training is not yet over.
In order to shine even more.
So I can give my fans much bigger dreams
I will devote myself to that.
Tumblr media
Uguisumaru.
An elusive and philosophical person***
He loves Ookanehira too much.
Tumblr media
Kogarasumaru.
Father.
Thank you for watching over everything.
Tumblr media

I’m glad I was able to fight with you in this show for so many times.
Tumblr media
Shokudaikiri.
You’re good in cooking.
And good in singing too.

You’ve been kiwame’d.
You’ve gained a mantle.
You’ve grown, huh.
Tumblr media
Hasebe.
A fellow comrade.
The Hasebe who has always silently supported Manba-chan and wished for his success.
Thank you.
Tumblr media
Honebami.
We didn’t have much scenes together this time but
The scene where Honebami cried was a great scene too.

The state of my repairs. Lol
Filling the trashcan up with ice water
In all the ends of performances,
I’d cool down my leg with this.
It’s very effective!
Then,
Thank you for reading up to this
I apologize for such a long and hasty writing.
The letters I received for these performances,
Presents,
Colored papers.
Thank you so much, everyone
I’ll gladly cherish and treasure all the presents
The letters and colored papers too
I’ll read them all carefully
It always brightens me up when I receive stuff from you guys
That energy
I wish I can return it to everyone
I’ll devote myself [to that] even more and more so,
From here on too
I’m looking forward to your support for Aramaki Yoshihiko.
Lastly.
From Kyouden
to Hiden’s story
Yamanbagiri Kunihiro has grown so much
I myself grew through this Tousute
Alongside Yamanbagiri Kunihiro I’m thinking I want to grow even more as him.
Through This participation in Stage play “Touken Ranbu”
I met Yamanbagiri Kunihiro
I’m really thankful.
The things that I could obtain from here Piece by piece
I’ve received the best and most important things in my life.
Thank you.
Touken Ranbu.
Tumblr media
Touken Ranbu.
Someday,
Let’s start again.

NOTES:
*円環 is literally a circle, or a ring.. but i translated it as The “loop” as implied in the play.
** literally “the wing of the stage”, but to make the flow better i used “backstage”. the wing is the place where the actors exit from the stage, so like... almost backstage (lol)
** ハケ not sure what this is meant to mean at all omg… i tried using “back” meaning backstage which would fit but idk man maybe he means entirely something else ;; it means brush as i recall but… was he brushing off his tears? i didnt think this could be used as a verb in that sense tho,, literally means like brush as in paintbrush or hairbrush? Sorry about this line!!
*** Not really sure if I read this right but it’s this 達観した物事の捉え方
**** Not sure how I wanted to translate it but it’s あんたのおかげで。。。if anyone is wondering hehe

Inosai, inohina, sasuino, sakuino,
Send me a ship and I'll rate it.
InoSai
A: I love it
TBH, I initially didn’t really like this pairing at the start. ( I was more into ShikaIno ) BUT after time, it really grew on me. Seeing them in gaiden and watching the relationship grow into a family, I was all in.
InoHina
B: It’s really cute / A: I love it
So, this has always been one of my guilty ships. I really enjoy the dynamic between the two of them and the vast differences in their personalities only adds to the allure imo. I’ve always been interested in seeing them interact together in a relationship. Although I’ve yet to explore this ship, Im still more than willing to do so. Ino is super soft for Hina and would cherish her always.
SasuIno
D: I’m neutral on it
I don’t hate it but I also don’t love it. It takes a special kind of chemistry for my Ino to consider Sasuke in terms of a ship. (hard side-eyes @xltor who is like the only sasuke I’ve considered shipping my Ino with.) I just don’t see the two of them having that strong of a connection otherwise.
SakuIno
B: It’s really cute
OKAY SO–– I like the idea of them as a couple. The only thing I struggle with is that they are such good friends I don’t know if Ino would ever be willing to lose that. I’ve yet to ship with a Sakura romantically but hey I’d be open to it, of course. BEST FRIENDS SHIP FOR LIFE THOUGH! Ino has her back no matter what.

Boruto Ep. 18- What I Liked
Lemme tell you that I was totally excited for some Uzumaki family time today, and this episode did not disappoint!!
1. Naruto eating at Ichiraku Ramen with his son
I loved this because you could tell simply by Boruto’s initial reaction how important this is to him. He was earlier ruminating on how his father being Hokage meant that he didn’t have a lot of time for the family anymore, and though this simple outing took him by surprise, he definitely wasn’t opposed to it.
This part of the episode also did a good job of subtly highlighting the troubles between Naruto and Boruto. As mentioned in an earlier episode, Naruto is a bit unsure on how to be a true father to Boruto. This is not only because of the demands of his position as Hokage, but also because he has so little experience with being fathered himself at Boruto’s age.
It also could be that Boruto’s adolescence may be proving a puzzling problem for him. (I know as a big siser I was having trouble on how to relate to my own siblings when they were getting Boruto’s age and older- I can only imagine what parents go through!!) And then there is the suspicion that he doesn’t know his son as well as he’d like to.
As for Boruto, I think some of his frustration comes from the act that Naruto insists on treating him like a kid, and yet he has to deal with the very mature realization that Daddy can’t be there for him all the time. This was somewhat touched in the movie novelization too--Boruto understood that his dad couldn’t always be there for him, he understood that the mature thing to do was to just deal with it, but he still couldn’t help the pain and anger he felt. It’s almost a ‘I want to be treated like an adult, but I don’t want to be an adult’ kind of mentality, IMO.
So the slight awkwardness of this dinner really helped highlight the problems they have, which will be resolved during the time of the movie.
Plus, it was amusing how a) Boruto was so tsundere about spending time with his dad, b) Naruto was the pot calling the kettle black (”You need a more balanced diet!”), c) Naruto actually told his son about his and his mom’s first date there (!!!), d) Hinata as the Queen of Gluttony. YAAAAAS. HER EATING SKILLZ ARE CANON!!
This dinner really was a major highlight of the episode for me.
2. The Uzumaki Family taking care of HImawari
It was precious how this family is dedicated to their littlest sunflower. Boruto really is a wonderful big brother. I also liked how pleasantly surprised he was when Naruto came home early to tend to his daughter.
Plus, that fight between rice porridge and hamburger steak?? HAHAHA Naruto and Boruto were both two mischievous lads there! And Hinata was boss in how she gently repimanded both of them. “Now you made your mother mad.” HAHAHA oh Naruto.
3. Day of Hokage flashback
The main thing I liked about this flashback was the new stuff they put in. I was seriously amused at how Naruto’s friends got him wasted the night before his inauguration ceremony. It was nice to see how Hinata was taking care of him, and that Boruto had stayed up the night before to see his daddy come home.
Plus I never saw Naruto’s face that red lol.
(AND I got more Shikamaru & Naruto brotp moments I will take everything I get, thank you!)
Other Stuff:
- I admit I wish that there wasn’t so much of the recap of the OVA, if only because I wanted more new stuff (guess I’m greedy haha).
- SO next episode starts the Sarada adventure! I’m more looking forward to seeing all the kids interact with their dads than anything else. (Sorry fam, but you know I’m not much of an Uchiha fan...unless their name is Sarada. Plus the Gaiden was boring to me when they tried inserting another ‘Sharingan clone’ enemy alongside baby mam drama and...yeah. Bad taste in my mouth.)
But bring on the different dads interacting with their kids! Can’t wait for Sai/Inojin and Shikamaru/Shikadai and Naruto/Boruto especially.
