I've realised something, HTTYD3 IS JUST WORSE RIO 1 AND 2! Rio 1 handled the romance much better with a proper love story showing the inner workings of both of their personalities, while the second Rio was weaker, I still think it had a better message and a believable arc for Blue to want to leave humans.

Brief recap of Rio: Blue is captured as a baby then cared for by a human until he's an adult, he never really thinks of himself as a pet, but he is and this is explored in the rest of the movie. Blue thought to be the last male of his species, so he gets transported to Rio to mate with the last female of his species (Jewel), they hate each other at first meeting because Blue likes humans and only sees the best in him while Jewel hates humans and only sees the worst (see what I'm getting at here) shenanigans ensue and they are both chained together, Jewel learns that Blue cannot fly, so they are both stuck on the ground, the rest of the movie is them escaping a hunter (rare bird trafficker) and his animal sidekick (Cockatoo named Nigel) and slowly falling in love, in the end Blue chooses to save Jewel rather than go to his human, after he learns to fly by himself to save Jewel. Jewel gets injured and has to trust humans so she can fly again. At the end of the movie they stay in Rio at a bird sanctuary and start a family.

So you see how this could have worked so, SO much better than the piss poor characterisation than HTTYD3, Jewel is a likeable character with believable motivations and so is Blue. Okay so the 2nd Rio;

Movie starts with Jewel acting like a bird, foraging for food, while Blue and his kids are eating human food. Blue and Jewel travel to the Amazon and find Jewels family, Blue doesn't fit in because he's not used to living without humans, he keeps human technology and doesn't understand the culture. Again, shenanigans ensue and after the entire movie of Blue not being able to fit in and hating it, he chooses his family over humans because he understands that this is what's best for them. In the end that area becomes a protected zone and Blues human (I think) move closer to that Blue can visit them from time to time while still remaining wild.

This story is so much more focused on the characters complex feelings towards their natural environment while still maintaining their intelligence. I don't think I need to explain how this could have made HTTYD3 so much better, the dragons leave to the hidden world while still Toothless still visits Hiccup and they are still found family while Toothless does what's best for his family.

Toothless doesn't need to magically be able to fly when saving the lightfury, just being able to learn how to lock his tailfin or some other way that he can save her without human interaction.

Would not be corrupted. Probably would have thought they'd be okay running a quick errand without the buddy system. That never happened again.

Stayed in AB so they wouldn't risk getting lost

Would get skulked on (they fucked around and found out) Dominant hand would got injured. Popped a Totem to the Warden (obviously didnt hold it against Rae)

• Season 3 (Purgatory ep):

Would go into Purgatory and sacrifice a compass

If we wanted to say him doing bird behaviours when stressed it would be things like biting, aggression, birds like cockatoos will also do repetitive actions a lot (like swinging their head) feather picking and self mutilation, that sort of thing. Nothing about gripping things. And honestly idk why you'd make one up the bird stress behaviours already make for good traits to apply to hawks

a hawk is a super interesting bird to like have as a human hubrid too. I've been reading research papers about their behaviors. and they are pretty solely motivated by the hunt. they hunt eat hunt. mating for life saves them a lot of time because now they have a co-partner to hunt with. and the babies stay with them maybe six weeks and then they're gone ready to hunt eat hunt. which they did give Hawks in the show he is solely motivated by his job and will accomplish it no matter what. I also like how they show Hawks gliding a lot cause hawks fly like that as opposed to frequent flapping. Save energy for hunting. Hawks are also like super duper vocal and if they're stressed will simply scream to let you know so anything else is taking up energy they could be using for hunting. They don't seem to go for self mutilation. and they're either at rest or hunting/fighting so it's a very simple bird

also i found this study where they gave some injured hawks pain meds and other injured hawks nothing. and the hawks just simply didn't care. the very injured ones stayed still pain meds or not. the slightly injured ones hopped about like they weren't even injured. both they surmise are forms of defense against a predator. if you're too injured to fight don't move. if you're not too injured to fight don't let them know you're injured

also fun is hawks themselves cause such stress in animals it can put them in the hospital. I read about poor chickens just being unable to cope with hawks near by. And their soaring scares prey out of bushes (seriously stupid flight response). and people play hawk sounds out loud to frighten off other birds

Hawk is a really good choice for a super hero who never ever stops the grind

Animals galore

We've had enough wine for a while so today we went to Humbug Scrub Wildlife Sanctuary. This was a gem of a find, not commercial at all. I don't think charging $5Aus per adult would even cover the feed costs but they just care about the animals, most of which are either wild and who come for a feed, like the multitude of emus and cockatoos or they are rescued animals, either orphaned or injured. We arrived just as they opened and there was no one much about but there were a lot of emus hanging about waiting for food and sticking their heads into cars looking for food. the chap feeding them opened up the wallaby enclosure and frankly we were mobbed by wallabies of all different sizes, one about 3 weeks out of the pouch - he was tiny and kept getting trodden on by the others in their bid to be fed or scratched. Initially we didn't have any food for them but went back and got some pellets and spent a very happy 30 minutes being mobbed - with one goose of course which seems to be the norm!

Then it was off to the kangaroo enclosure. These are a little more wild and thus we couldn't go in with them but could feed through some little windows and one got hold of Andy hooking his "fingers" through his wedding ring so until I unhooked him, the food was well and truly caught, as was Andy's hand! we then wandered off to have a look at the grandfather's grave and the original cottage where they set up their home and the sanctuary in 1905. It was set up as a bit of historic interest. The chap now running this is the youngest of the youngest of the 12 children and he seemed ancient - its a worry as to who will look after the animals when he is gone.

We wandered around the bird cages, most of whom are rescue parrots of some sort, peacocks and chickens and then had another cuddle session with the wallabies before going back to meet the koala they rescued called Annabelle. This was an absolute highlight as we went in with her and could stroke and scratch her. She was a bit huffy as she wanted a different eucalypt stalk than the one she'd been given but once a new stalk arrived she munched happily and was completely at ease with us being there even dozing off at one stage.

I didn't realised that koalas have two thumbs, they have hands and feet like ours but their "index" finger is two clawed and acts as a second thumb to help them climb and cling. I also didn't realise that they were such fussy eaters, its not just eucalyptus, but she likes a particular type! It was lovely to learn all about her and get such close up time without paying a fortune.

It was clear that the sanctuary doesn't get any support and few visitors as its very low key and really all ab out the animals, the fact that visitors come is sort of irrelevant which is a shame as they clearly need the money to keep the animals fed.

This was certainly well worth the donation we made and I would advise anyone coming to this area to go there for an up close and personal encounter with animals in a totally non commercial way.

The Teaching Assistant

Chapter 6

The wait for monday is painfully long!! She does get called out for a mission and gets scolded when something goes wrong, when it wasn't her fault! How is bad intel her fault, her only objective was to get in and out with the injured while the other heros on her team fought. It was like they knew someone was coming and hid a villain among the hostages. She fought tooth and nail and almost kill the guy, lucky she didn't.

She did get bruised up, and a fractured arm but nothing her quirk couldn't handle, even if it made her extremely tired in the end. She did heal up the hostages, even the knocked out villain who almost died of blood loss. But once again seems everyone in her brothers agency finds fault with her for no reason. It's stupid majorly so.

Back to Monday night she's showing off a few different button up shirts to Stubby, "so be real with me, which one should I wear to the interview, the red one or the black one?" She ask

The cat huffs and gives a head tilt which Amelia replies, "I know it's a virtual interview but I still need to look, ya know, professional."

She looks at the mirror in her room and holds up each air of clothing, "I think black works better, I already have red hair and red eyes, it would be to much to wear red." She comments to herself

She looks at the time, Japan is about 12 hours behind America. So she needs to wait until 3 am, since that's when the video call is scheduled for.

(Okay so correct me if I'm wrong about the time, but I believe that's right)

She sits the shirt flat on her desk and debates on wearing dress parts or PJ bottoms to the virtual interview, cause what's the chance they make her stand up and show her outfit off? She decides to stay on the safe side and wear dress pants, plus it shows she went the extra mile.

She checks the time it's 9:13 PM. She's got time to shower, maybe nap before getting up closer to 3 in the morning. She nods as she does just that. She wakes up to her blaring alarm as, she lazyly swipes her phone screen to shut the alarm off as she sits up.

Her red hair needs another brush through as she swings to feet to the edge of her queen bed before getting to her feet. She does a big stretch and rushes to get dressed in the bathroom still having 30 minutes to make herself presentable.

Stubby is already sitting on the counter by her laptop, as she comes out of her room looking good in her blue button up and black dress pants, she doesn't bother with shoes as she sits down on the barstool getting her laptop ready as 3 am in 5 minutes away.

She runs her hands through her red locks and looks at Stubby, "okay, I look good right? Oh jeez so I speak Japanese or do I speak English, what if I mess up!? I never had the chance to really practice my Japanese before." Amelia says begining to panic

The cat gives off a purr trying to be reassuring, he believes in her after all. His white tail stretches and wraps a pound her hand in reassurance. Which Amelia looks grateful for as she looks at the time and decides to join the Oogle meeting.

She stares at her own video feed before it a conference room pops up, she sees a mouse looking thing and a really really tired guy and a-wow how does someone get their hair to stand like that?

She feels her heart beat pick up, as she feels like a deer caught in headlights as the sound soon feeds through.

"Miss Tano correct? Can ya hear us just fine?" The mouse thing (is he a stout?) ask in Japanese

She gulps before nodding, "y-yes sir I can hear you loud and clear. Can you umm.. hear me?" She replies cautiously in Japanese as well

(Just a word of warning she'll be speak in Japanese for the meeting and so will Nezu, Aizawa, and Present Mic)

The mouse thing nods back as the blond Cockatoo gives a thumbs up.

"I was worried their would be tad but if a language barrier but I'm glad there isn't. Let me introduce ourselves. Am I a mouse, a bear, whatever I am, all you need to know is I'm the principal of UA, I go by Nezu." The mouse thing states

The blond goes giving a big grin, "I'm Present Mic, but my real name is Yamada Hizashi! I teach English here at UA, I'm mostly here to help translate if there's issues with communication. Glad a cutie like you doesn't have a problem-ow. Sho that was my shin."

The tired man seems to have kicked Yamada under the table, while Nezu just sips tea and enjoys the chaos a bit.

"I'm Aizawa Shouta, class 1a homeroom teacher, I'm the person who you'll be working with if this goes well." He states a bit tired with a neutral expression, looks like he doesn't wanna be here

"Way to bring down the mood dude." Whispers Yamada and the microphone barely picks it up

Nezu clears his throat taking back control of the meeting, "now that we have introduced ourselves, I think it's time you introduced yourself, don't you think?" Nezu says in his usual cheerful tone

Amelia feels tense but she nods none the less, she remembers everyone's been introducing themselves by last name first, then first name. "I'm Tano Amelia, I've been a pro hero for 6 years and ranked in top 150. I'm a rescue hero, so while I can fight I prefer more slip in and out unoticed with civilians safe. My hero name is Mercy, and I'm known as the Medic Hero." She states softly and confidently (so proud 🥲 of my shy baby)

The three on the other side of the world take notes, as she talks. She does pause a small amount to give them time to ask but when they don't she goes on talking, "my quirk is a bit weird, I can't turn it off."

Before she can speak again someone is speaking up, "a passive quirk huh? That could be dangerous." Says a tired Aizawa looking right at the camera, Amelia feels a bit intimidated.

"Well, umm not exactly, I'm pretty careful especially if I'm in a fight, cause that's when I need to be mindful of it. It's not touch based or anything, umm it's.. my bodily fluids, like blood, snot, spit, anything labeled under bodily fluids has a bit of my quirk, some like blood have a more potent version of it."

The blond Cockatoo looks squeamish while the dark haired homeless man looks about the same, maybe his eyes got a bit wider or something? Nezu looks the same but he gets a interested look on his face.

"Now, that's interesting, what is your quirk exactly?" Nezu ask setting his tea cup down

"Oh umm it's called Healing Fluids, it doesn't really um give me any draw backs, well actually, the only problem I get is anemia if I use to much blood, and dry mouth if I use my saliva too much. I do get negative feelings, like disgust, feeling itchy if I use it to much in one setting. Other than that, theirs nothing else. The people I do heal complain about different things, If I heal with blood; they complain about a burning sensation like their being burned but it's only for a moment and then it's gone. My saliva its kind of like a numbing agent, it doesn't burn but it isn't as potent in healing. I can use that for bruises and scratches but the big stuff, I gotta use blood all the way." She says a bit embarrassed to be talking about her quirk she sometimes despises

Nezu looks very intrigued, "with a quirk like that I can see why you took up the name Mercy the Medic Hero."

"The question is.. do you relie on your quirk to much? You could concuss yourself on the field and cause issues if your quirk wasn't there, or working right. You did say if you over use it you feel disgusted or itchy, what happens when you push through it?" Aizawa ask his eyes narrowing

"Oh umm, I don't like using my quirk unless absolutely necessary. The whole reason I got the title Medic Hero in the end was because I went to college shortly after graduating from my hero school, I am a certified CNA. I didn't debute until age of 20. There's something I gotta be able to do, to heal without my quirk. If I use my quirk to much I quite literally shut down, feel quite sickly. While I can still fight, I'm more paranoid. It's.. a weird draw back." She says nervously, "so yes I know my weakness and I back them up by not using my quirk unless necessary."

Aizawa looks a tad bit impressed, but it's hard to tell when he has a resting bitch face.

Nezu hums as he replies, "impressive none the less. Now then how about you us about yourself, maybe why you think you'd be a good fit for this job. Ya know just the standard questions at a interview."

She blinks in surprise, she tries to think of something that she can say, "oookkaayy.. so I like to read and learn new things. As weird as that sounds, I also like to bake when I have a down moment. As for why I think I'm a good fit.." she trails off thinking, to be honest she has no teaching experience, she doesn't have a teaching certification either.

"It's because I care, incredibly so. If I can help educate the future heros of today, arming them with knowledge and skills that can help them after graduation or even on internships, that's all that matters. Statically speaking less than 40 percent of heros survive two years after graduating, if I can make sure that the students I help teach aren't in the 60 percent that don't survive, that's all that matters." She says, "while I don't have a teaching certificate id be more than willing to go and get one, I umm was planning on trying for one but actually didn't know where to start when you called last week Nezu."

Aizawa looks impressed by her words at first until he heard about her not having a teaching certification. Yamada was moved and didn't seem to bothered by the lack of credentials.

Nezu hums, "yes I know that, that's something can be fixed. Well do you have any questions for us before we end this meeting?"

Amelia thinks on it, "if I get this job, will you help find a place to house me? I have money I just would rather not fly half way across the world an not have a place to move into."

Nezu chuckles as he picks his tea up and takes a sip, "of course! Let me handle everything. Consider it a investment if this works out. I'll call sometimes this week letting you know. Now I'm sure you wish to get some sleep, as its.. 3:41 am your times correct?"

She blushes and nods, "t-thanking for having me. Have a umm good afternoon."

She bows her head and then ends the call. She slouches in her seat as Stubby makes his presence known now by a cute meow.

She turns to look at him and sighs, "I feel like I was to awkward.. what if I don't get the job because of my weirdness."

The cat gives her a look before trying to close the laptop screen so she can go to bed.

"Okay, okay, I'm heading to bed. Let's go." She says getting up leaving her laptop on the center island, walking to the side turning the lights off and heading back to her room to sleep.

(Meanwhile, at the Butterflies Estate after three days in captivity and a movie-worthy escape, Kyoujurou barely survives a torture session, a shot to the stomach during the run, and a gouged out eye. Virgil held the puppy in his arms. Covered in concrete dust, she was more grey than the black she was supposed to be. she wriggled in his hold, shivering, obviously still in shock.

“Hey, honey. It’s okay. You’re safe now.” He brought his cheek down and nuzzled the little one. It was a dog, not a wolf, but just as precious. He warbled a little, deep in his throat, enough that she should sense safety.

Her response was immediate, golden eyes looking up at him in awe. Virgil smiled just a little and purred reassuringly.

The little puppy whimpered and nuzzled him.

“That’s better. Now we will go find you some food and a safe place to sleep.”

As with all major disasters, the local animal rescue organisation had a station on site. Virgil always made a point of noting them so he knew exactly where to take injured animals.

A life was a life, after all.

This time it was a huge white tent with rows of cages set up. Pets found amongst the rubble were being cared for onsite with a temporary emergency veterinary service set up. Fortunately, this little one appeared uninjured. The team would likely look her over anyway.

A young woman met him at the entrance and was immediately cooing over the little one. “Bring her this way, Mr Tracy, please.”

He obviously had no need to introduce himself, uniform, International Rescue, and all…

He followed.

Upset dogs and cats were far from quiet, but not as loud as the distressed cockatoo at the end of the hall. He winced as it squawked.

That, of course, set off the dogs even more. He tracked amongst the cages an alsation, a cocker spaniel, several of mixed breed and another two puppies at the very end of the aisle.

The puppy in his arms let out a nervous bark and Virgil stroked her scruff in reassurance.

A nod and he gently deposited the little puppy into a fleece-lined basket The woman placed her in the cage and closed the door.

The puppy looked up at Virgil with the most sorrowful expression, Virgil’s heart broke. He hated this bit. She would be safer here. Tracy Island was no place for another dog.

He could see his big brother frowning at him in the back of his mind.

He sighed.

“She will be okay, Mr Tracy.”

“Yeah, I know.” He forced a smile. “Thank you.”

He turned to leave, but another animal suddenly caught his eye.

Across the aisle from his rescuee, another little puppy was sitting unhappily in a cage. Instead of black, this one was a surprising red.

It also wasn’t a dog.

It was a wolf.

Virgil’s heart beat against the inside of his ribcage. A red wolf.

He approached slowly and bright cerulean eyes followed his every movement. Crouching down, he rumbled a query deep in his throat.

The wolf whimpered.

“Oh, yes, that poor little one was only survivor of a family of five. Whole house collapsed on them. It was a miracle he survived at all.”

“What will happen to him?” It was all breath, Virgil’s eyes fixated on one of his own species.

“Shelter and farmed out to anyone who would be willing to take him.”

“I’ll take him.” It came out without hesitation. This was not a dog. This was a wolf.

The woman stared at him a moment. “Are you sure?”

Virgil straightened. “I’m sure. I’ll take him now.”

“Oh, okay.” Her eyes were wide. “I’ll get the paperwork.” She hurried off, leaving Virgil standing in the middle of the aisle.

He crouched in front of the cage again. Alone in a room full of canines, he warbled a greeting far down in his throat.

Every dog in the tent suddenly went silent.

Every canine eye turned to him.

The little red wolf’s eyes widened. He stood up, stepped out of the basket the facility had provided and cautiously crept towards Virgil.

A bandage on his back leg had him limping.

Virgil’s heart clenched.

A purr of encouragement into the silence.

The puppy stared.

A cautious yip.

The Scott in the back of his head could find no argument as Virgil carefully opened the cage door and held out his arms to the little wolf.

There’s nothing better than a nice exfoliation to clean your parrot self after a long day.

Apparently, that holds true even if you’re a parrot with only half a beak. Biologists have discovered that Bruce – a disabled New Zealand kea (Nestor notabilis) at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch – has been using tiny little pebbles to preen himself.

This is particularly exciting for biologists, as this is both the first time scientists have recorded a kea using a tool for self-care and the first scientific observation of a parrot using a pebble in this way.

“Among birds, self-care tooling is seemingly rare in the wild, despite several anecdotal reports of this behavior in captive parrots,” the researchers write in their new paper.

“Here, we show that Bruce, a disabled parrot lacking his top mandible, deliberately uses pebbles to preen himself.”

Preening might seem like an activity that a parrot could live without, but it’s critical for bird hygiene and feather maintenance. Preening helps birds remove dust, dirt and parasites, and allows them to align feathers for insulation, waterproofing, and optimal aerodynamics.

It also makes sure they look their best for potential mates.

Usually, kea – an endangered parrot species found only on the South Island of New Zealand – will use their powerful beaks to preen themselves.

But Bruce was found back in 2013 in the wild as a juvenile, badly injured with the top half of his beak missing. Although his caretakers aren’t sure how this occurred, they believe it could have been the result of a pest trap.

So, with no proper beak to preen with, you might think Bruce would end up looking a little shabby. However, Bruce has adapted incredibly well to life with no top beak – instead using a variety of tools such as pebbles in between his bottom beak and his tongue to help him undertake these tasks.

“To have an individual innovate tool use in response to his disability shows great flexibility in their intelligence. They’re able to adapt and flexibly solve new problems as they emerge,” says one of the study authors, animal cognitive researcher Amalia Basto.

“The pebbles he picked up were different to those picked up by other kea, they were always of a certain size. This points to an intentional act: to find a way to preen himself without the top half of his beak.”

When keepers first noticed Bruce’s penchant for pebbles in 2019, the researchers sprung into action. They watched him across nine days, discovering ample evidence that this really was tool use for self-care, rather than something less exciting.

“In over 90 percent of instances where Bruce picked up a pebble, he then used it to preen; in 95 percent of instances where Bruce dropped a pebble, he retrieved this pebble, or replaced it, in order to resume preening,” the team writes.

“Bruce selected pebbles of a specific size for preening rather than randomly sampling available pebbles in his environment; no other kea in his environment used pebbles for preening.”

We humans are becoming increasingly aware of tool use in the animal world. Crows are very good at it, cockatoos can make their own tools or just loot our stuff, and even octopuses use tools as a defence against unwanted attention.

The oldest known age for a wild kea is 20 years old, but parrots in captivity can live for 50 years, so we hope Bruce gets to continue his self-care routine for many years yet.

The research has been published in Scientific Reports.
