Colours in Our Skyy 2 Bad Buddy x A Tale of Thousand Stars ep 2

With this first crossover ep and the whole thing set in Chiang Mai/Pha Pun Dao, I was interested to see whether the colours I had interpreted in Bad Buddy would continue. @respectthepetty has written a great post on the use of lighting in atots, but I didn't pay as much attention to the lighting in this crossover to be able to say whether it's been consistent here too (maybe they will!).

I did notice, however, that the villagers wore a lot of blue and red (although a quick scan of atots reminded me that they wore a lot of those colours in that series too...although weighted more on the blue side).

Hello Toto and sound-booth-guy! (I think he had a name but I couldn't find it again). Also, I think they raided the wardrobe for Aou in Vice Versa for Pat's Chiang Mai clothes - why has he gone from sleeveless shirts in BBS to pocketed vests in OS2?!

Beyond all the blue and red, the other colours featured as well...starting with Pran in an orange shirt, which I said I would talk about in my ep 1 post. I love the idea that the orange might be a reference to Ink and how she entered Pat and Pran's story as a potential faen fatale in ep 4 of BBS. Initially, Pran regarded her cautiously as a love interest for Pat and similarly in Our Skyy 2 Pran is first looked upon warily by Tian as someone suspiciously close to Phupha (the children don't help by saying Pran is Phupha's boyfriend). This leads me back the tent in ep 1, and the orange there could also have been a nod to the faen fatale character - of Wai coming between the couple by being mistaken by Pat for Pran. Anyway, note Pran's yellow socks below! He might have left Pat behind but his love for him is still with him.

Pran's orange could also have been a choice for Aof to create the wonderful parallel with Moonlight Chicken, of Mix's character being witness to the 'baby-gays', alongside Pat's blue striped top. But Tian's olive-green top (and Phupha's camouflage), suggests the conflict and hostility between both couples.

The next day, despite sabotaging Pran's attempts to get Phupha and Tian to make up, Pat is wearing a yellow top, perhaps proclaiming his love for Pran out loud. Pran, despite telling Pat he wanted to come alone and get the signatures without his help, is wearing Pat's colour - a loud proclamation itself. And we soon see that they have exchanged colours again, with Pat wearing Pran's colour close to his under his shorts (@dimplesandfierceeyes pointed out a great little parallel with this to BBS ep 7 here). Note also Pran's yellow socks again - maybe this is the start of them matching their tops and socks 🤭

Jumping back to the night before and the dark green and brown of their tops could symbolise their fight - their stubbornness to not give in to the other becomes an obstacle to their happiness and they go to sleep disgruntled with each other.

But then the next night is a different matter, when they *ahem* test the structural integrity of the hut... Pat's love for Pran makes him always want to help Pran, seen in the yellow of his top, and they end up unified again (shaking the hut) as symbolised by all the teal and mint green (do we include the Nong Nao mask in this? 😄).

The next day, Pran is in his own red, perhaps feeling back to himself again after pulling away from Pat...and Pat is confusedly in the strange 'Aou from Vice Versa' outfit above 🤷🏽‍♀️ (sometimes clothes are just clothes 😏) Later, Pran wears yellow stripes (in front of a yellow lantern) whilst singing about his and Pat's love. Pat's also in stripes and the blue could add to his confidence as the 'engineering top-notch'. The green, however, is quite neutral - a 'primary' green, neither good (lime, mint, or teal) nor bad (forest/olive), and maybe this alludes to the draw he eventually has with Phupha and that the outcome of their drinking was neither good nor bad.

Incidentally, I liked that Pat woke up on a bed of red, initially thinking he was with Pran, and on top of another mat that looks yellow and blue, and was covered by a blanket in his own blue. With the amount he loves Pran, it's not hard to see that he wouldn't have cheated on him, even blind drunk (the same maybe could be said for Phupha with Tian).

It was interesting that Phupha and Tian also wore teal whilst Pat and Pran were trying to get them back together...and they might have succeeded if it hadn't have been for the letter - perhaps Tian's olive green pants and Phupha's camouflage allude to this...or, going back to @respectthepetty's interpretation of lighting, the fact that the lighting is quite cold here could show that the night would not end well for them.

And so on to the brown on Yod and Kampung - perhaps showing Phupha yielding to Pat's challenge, and Pran yielding to Tian's desire to walk to Pha Pun Dao. It's a nice touch that it looks like Yod has a dark blue shirt over the top of his brown (whilst with Pat) and Kampung has the red jersey (whilst with Pran).

And lastly, we end on olive/brown and camouflage - symbolising the trouble ahead for both couples (and for our sanity) and the sacrifice that they might have to make. (Or, you know, it just makes sense for them to be wearing this because they're forest rangers 🤷🏽‍♀️).

OUR SKYY 2 x BAD BUDDY x A TALE OF THOUSAND STARS – PA AMONG THE CALLBACKS

So how's everyone doing now that two of the four OS2 x BBS x ATOTS episodes have aired? 🥰 I'm treating this as a four-part miniseries because it's just easier for reference, although the fourth episode may possibly be solely an EarthMix vehicle (but I'm hoping it'll be crossover BBS x ATOTS all the way to the end 😍).

Ep.1 and much of Ep.2 were a really fun romp while Director Aof and his writers laid the groundwork for developments to come, and part of that fun was all the callbacks to the original series, lighting up the screen every time they made reference to scenes, plot points, themes and ideas in BBS and ATOTS.

These were loving gifts to loving fans, recreating some of the beloved originals' magic, while also distracting from the story-seeding going on. Some were visual callbacks, using similar onscreen vocabulary to recreate almost verbatim beloved tableaux from the original series, while others were more abstract, requiring you to think about the reference.

There are far too many to list in entirety (including some up at Pha Pun Dao after the crossover got fully going), but here's a sampling of callbacks to BBS from only OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1, that came in thick and fast one after another:

Kicking off the series with Wai, panning upwards from his shoes to his face – the same in both BBS and OS2xBBSxATOTS;

The Archi-Engine face-off at OS2xBBSxATOTS (that isn't quite what it seems) references a similar face-off at BBS Ep.1 [3I4] 7.38;

Louis crashing into Wai with news of Pran's (purported) fight with Pat (OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 3.51) is an inverted replay of Safe crashing into Pran with news of Wai in a fight, that Pran at first thinks is Louis getting into trouble (BBS Ep.1 [1I4] 2.22);

PatPran's discussion behind the red backdrop at OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 5.32 is of course a callback to their reconciliation backstage at the end of BBS Ep.8 (complete with red curtain drop);

Pat going "I signaled you to punch on the left, but you punched on the right" (OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 8.46) of course echoes his "I offered you this cheek, but you punched me on this cheek" (BBS Ep.1 [4/4] 5.14);

Pa interrupting PatPran's kiss (OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 9.45) calls out to BBS Ep.7 [2/4] 10.76 and Ep.7 [4/4] 7.50, and in turn gets called out and captioned by Pran at OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 9.51; 😂

Pat, Pran, Ink and Pa's in-room sukiyaki (OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 10.25) is callback to their hotpot in Tinidee (BBS Ep.9 [2/4] 0.17);

Ink peeling and feeding shrimp to Pa (OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4]��10.28) is not only a Thai BL trope semi-subverted in its appropriation for GL 🥰, but is also a callback to their hotpot semi-date at BBS Ep.8 [2/4] 0.59.

But really Ink and Pa (especially Pa) turning up with the sukiyaki at OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 9.47 was also a callout to Pa's own treatment as a character in Bad Buddy.

It bears repeating that Ink as a character in BBS subverted the evil ex-girlfriend trope, turning out to be a supportive bestie instead of vengeance-bent villain. Pa's character also subverted another stereotype, but a lot more subtly.

Pa's line at OS2xBBSxATOTS Ep.1 [1I4] 9.47 especially ("Sukiyaki delivery!") brings us back to all the times she turned up to help her brother and the storyline along in Bad Buddy, usually by providing some help and/or delivering something. A list of examples:

Doing chores for Pat (highlighting his princeling status in the family), including delivering his laundry (Ep.1 [3I4] 2.40);

Driving Pat around in the earlier episodes (more spotlight on Princeling Pat), which then turned into a rescuer role when she and Pat saved Pran from Korn, Mo and Chang (Ep.1 [3I4] 1.49);

Delivering contact lenses (and the gift of clear vision) to Pat at Ink's photoshoot (Ep.4 [2/4] 4.02);

Delivering Pat's ranat ek mallets to him just in time for his audition as Riam (helping to clear the way on the road to PatPran's couplehood, Ep.7 [3I4] 1.38).

The extraneous character, who exists only for exposition and in service of the main couple's storyline, plagues many a BL drama (and this is a fate that falls particularly to any female supporting characters in the cast list, since they're mostly unnecessary to the romantic narrative of a BL, which is romance-driven). Director Aof certainly started off Pa's portrayal looking like she would be destined for a very similar trajectory. But as BBS unfolded, this set-up (like so many others) got rapidly turned on its head, and Pa, just like Ink, got to tell her own story too.

There's more in there than they had time to recount (e.g., Pa's refusal to help Ming in the family business, despite his recognition of her talent there) but most importantly Pa got to play Ink's love interest, iconoclastically breaking so much new ground. In 2023 GL drama is now a thing, and we have InkPa (and Director Aof) to thank for a lot of this.

Ink and Pa also saved Bad Buddy from failing the Bechdel Test, which (it must be said) isn't the best measure for how successful a show is at representing women – it's a rather low bar for that, but shamefully so many shows (especially BL ones) fail it regardless (KinnPorsche comes to mind). But I think BBS passes with flying colors, not least because Ink and Pa's characters were treated with such respect when they could so easily – especially Pa's character – have been given perfunctory template treatment, and turned into cardboard dispensables instead of the believably-rounded characters we got in the final product.

BBS draws a line under this within itself at Ep.5 [2/4] 4.42 when Pa cheekily says "Use a delivery service" with reference to Pat's new drumsticks, because she was not much more than a delivery service herself in the first five episodes, supplying information to aid the unfolding story of PatPran's relationship.

Thus, Pa calling out "Sukiyaki delivery!" in OS2xBBSxATOTS is a reminder of how she was lifted from the usual purgatory of flatly-rendered supporting characters, and given a story arc of her own. Symbolized by her glow-up at the start of BBS Ep.7, Pa was eventually unveiled to us as more than just a colorless wheel in the works, and given her own bit of spotlight as a character worthy of attention in her own right.

Just another example of Director Aof doing something quietly revolutionary within the 12 episodes of BBS! 😍

when did you watch bad buddy/join the fandom?

So I was initially waiting for Bad Buddy to finish airing so that I can binge it. But it was getting harder to avoid spoilers on the dash, so I decided to give it a go. I am so glad I binged ep 1-6 and only joined the airing from ep 7. Because there is no way I could have survived ep5 and waited a week after watching Pran walk away. That would have been torture.

Of course PatPran are the ultimate ship. I love them so much. And also InkPha because we are finally getting some GL representation!!!

I know everyone says this, but it is true. Pran is me. I am Pran. Like I have never related to a character as much as I have related to Pran. In terms of character, personality and even certain issues he was facing. It's just insane. And I love him so much.

favorite episode(s)

Episode 10. It just has everything; the highs and the lows. A perfect mix. We start off with the staircase confession, which is also one of my fave scenes, and then we have the boys finding out that the business/Chai was never the main problem the parents, prompting them to dig deeper. Pha's realisation and thew whole park trial date with the Wai encounter. That was such an epic scene. The only thing better than confused Pha was protective Ink and flustered/heartbroken Wai.A little cameo from Gemini, Ford and Fourth! INKPHA DARK ROOM SCENE!! PatPran on an actual hotpot date! And of course the parental confrontation and rooftop breakdown. I know I did not have to list out the whole ep, but I got excited. I am sorry.

Episode 5 4/4 is just a different league. That should actually count as an episode on its own. Love every second from the lobby fight scene to the rooftop kiss and Pran walking away. Its all just chef's kiss. All the emotions!! I am forever in awe at how Jimmy stood up to Nanon and Ohm. He could have easily gotten swallowed by their presence and energy, as a newbie. But nope, he gave as good as either of them. He demanded that space in the scene. And all three of them killed it! Not even gonna start talking about the rooftop scene. There is not enough time and character limit for that. Another favourite is the rooftop breakdown. That was one gorgeous breakdown, and idk if it can be topped. The way Pat is already there when Pran calls his phone. The way Pran who has always been in absolute control, jsut completely breaks down sobbing in Pat's arms. The way Pat can't hold his tears back at seeing Pran cry. The way he tries to still hold it back because he knows Pran needs the space to finally let go. Pat asking Pran if he likes Ink in ep4, and Pran crying in his bed. Idk if he was meant to cry, or if it just happened. But that was beautiful. I can't watch that scene without feeling like I want to punch Pat for puttiung PRan through that, and to give Pran a nice long hug. This shall be my last. InkPha darkroom scene!! They both did such a rgeat job there as well! I can still hear the way Pha's voice quivers when she talks to Ink. It was remarkable. And to think everyone was actually there for that scene (I think it was this scene?). Cos everyone wanted to see the girls act a GL scene. So it must have been pressurising, but they were amazing!

one thing you would change about the show if you could

Gonna say the same thing as Vi and Vishie. WAI NEEDS TO APOLOGISE TO PRAN! It does not matter if homophobia does not exist in the BB universe. You still broke your friend's trust. There's no way you are being made the victim here. You have to apologise and face the music. I am not saying that Wai dropping the curtain should not have happened. I can understand why he did that. But I can't understand why he got away scot-free, and Pran was left to chase after him with an apology. I do not like that they left this unaddressed.

Fave Show : Honestly am very impressed with how the blending turned out here. Fave Couple : First time trying out a different style with text effects, colouring those random heart effects, and I was very excited with the final look. Fave Episode : I thought it was a fun idea to explain the episode with song titles, and liked how it turned out. BB X Spiderman : Yes, It is not a happy edit, but I love spiderman and I loved the chance to mix it together with my BB love. Composition Gif Challenge : Again, not a happy edit. But I saw the quote and it reminded me that PatPran could have had an unhappy ending. So I wanted to explore that. It was fun trying to figure out all the shapes and placements. Gifted Buddy Series (1 and 2) : This was entirely a product of Vishie screaming at me with her AU ideas. Thank you for all the screaming Vish, I love it all and I love you! Season 2 Netflix Edit : This took so much time, but I really like how it turned out. And it was kinda fun coming up with a Season 2 synopsis.

when did you watch bad buddy/join the fandom?

i started watching the series and joined the fandom after ep 7 had aired. it all begun on my christmas break at my parents’ place where binged all the available episodes in a couple of days. my christmas was spent thinking about the rooftop kiss and how that absolutely ruined me. BB was never on my radar bc the title didn’t really intrigue me (i have bad experiences with BLs with silly titles) and i wasn’t really thinking about watching a series with ohm again, but i am so happy that tumblr dragged me in. changed my life and my perspective on BLs. and now i’m way too deep in this shit hehe

patpran and waikorn. i adore inkpha too but mainly as a GL couple that has made me feel comfortable and seen. they never stuck with me as much. patpran are my comfort and waikorn give me extreme brainworms.

my two architecture losers aka pran and wai. pran is me, i am him. he gets it, to put it simply. wai, then again, is very my brand of blorbo, my bastard son, my horrible wet rat boy, my hissy kitten. the maker of chaos and absolutely horrible with feelings. i could fix him, i could make him worse, and i’d enjoy every moment of it.

ep 11 for the overall bittersweet feeling. the whole episode just feels like the calm before a storm. it’s their sweet goodbye to each other despite nothing ever truly ending between them. also ep 5 for the ending part but also for pat’s journey to self-discovery.

from ep 5 the whole ending part: the three-way fight, the rooftop kiss, and even pran going through it at the beginning of ep 6. ep 11 shirt scene and pat thanking pran, pat in music store discovering himself, wai protecting hurt pran in the rugby game (the brainworms are real with this one), ep 12 reveal where pran comes to pat's door, hotpot double date, bar scene at the end. oh, and absolutely the fiasco that is wai trying to flirt with pha in the park while ink is there. that one's golden.

one thing you would change about the show if you could

i agree on the wai apology with you vi. it should happen as a nod towards the fact that his behavior was not ok. even if things got sorted out for patpran and even if in their world wai’s actions didn’t have as dire consequences as they could have in the real world (where homophobia is very real), the viewers should get shown that he acknowledges his wrongdoings and that patpran deserve a proper apology from someone like him. ALSO PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LET WAIKORN BE TOGETHER P’AOF AM UNDER YOUR BED

ok yeah so i have this fully-fledged bad buddy x the gifted au in my brain that is half based on all the ohmnanon dramas i've come to watch after bad buddy plus all the things i hope the gifted would've been instead of. well. what it was 😬 the concept was super cool but i didn't really like their execution lol

but i have powers for the main six, i have backstories for most of them. i have figured out some of the struggles they go through! also yes this is a mutant au basically and of course that means there's a ton of Angst and things get way rougher than in the gifted. also the school system or whatever is more Nuts bc i said so. also bc i love mutant aus and the mutants always breaking free and lowkey starting a revolution or something. not just the small scale struggle they had going on in the gifted smh

(also as a side note, i have seen at least two other the gifted aus for bad buddy and both were really good so! idk if i really would have any place there so am happy to keep this in my own head basically :') i can just go feral every time i think about what i could write for them haha)

if i can talk about the powers i have figured out, then they go as:

pran - can control soundwaves which basically means that he can a) hear very well (at first involuntarily which is kind of rough), b) use sound as a weapon and c) talk to ppl who are far away

pat - a type of power sealing power? he can make others' powers disappear by touch. usually, the effect lasts only for a while but he can make it permanent too (has done this only by accident for now). my initial plan for him was him being some type of "shield" against powers but that felt too much like bella swan. so now he's this. tho i feel like he still gets parts of the "shield" idea bc i thought that at some point he might be able to develop his power into using it at will to just block others' powers when they try to use them

wai - can control senses so hallucinations, sensory deprivation, all that. if it's subtle he can just make ppl believe basically anything bc they thought they sensed it. if it's violent enough, he could kill ppl.

korn - super strength. lowkey a cliche but i like this. he can probably develop his power into being lowkey indestructible. he probably also heals fast.

pha - can control earth. she is the reason the jindapat siblings discover their powers. she suddenly gets a temper tantrum at ten and breaks their living room floor. bc pat is her biological brother, it is considered most likely that he will develop a power too. it takes him a year before he discovers that what he thought was just his social skill at calming down ppl is actually his ability to make their powers vanish for a moment.

ink - able to read and manipulate emotions. kind of like claire in the gifted but more extreme. she usually uses her skill to help others but she can be terrifying if someone does her wrong. ever cried so hard your heart gave out? not fun.

and that's about it. i have some meetings and conflicts figured out outside of their powers. also i think these could make very nice dynamics to explore. (tagging @mejomonster to this too if you're right and they wish to see this!)

i think you have read everything i have for that currently 😔 i still think about how zhou youdu will fit into the dynamic with the other two. also thinking about how william probably dies in this too. i was not that fond of his character as you might know lol he was a major asshole and i don't think he deserved to "get the girl" at the end but well. i guess he deserved something. also he needs to apologize to so many ppl and i plan on doing that bc wth why was he allowed to just Get Away With It dammit.

#the bad buddy x the gifted au is something that keeps me afloat ok #watching all these ohmnanon dramas has made me Feral #like have you seen nanon in the gifted or in blacklist? #the faces that boy makes?? delicious whump #i want to whump pran so bad #and bad buddy doesn't really offer us that bc that drama is Soft #and i cannot give anything but nice things to pran there #so au it is haha #and what an au it is ok i have come to majorly Wreck His Ass #the boy in this au is so angsty he wishes i was not in love with him #bc wow does he get hurt by his own power #he struggles with it so much #also it's been fun trying to come up with like #the reasons why some things that happen in bad buddy happen in this #like why does pran have to leave school when their parents aren't really involved in any of this in the au? #well i think it's bc he accidentally hurts someone with his powers #and is deemed too dangerous to attend this normal school #and well he and pat know each other then #and are kind of friends and kind of close #and then pat is left behind bc well his power isn't really dangerous #his power is Good #and then pran meets wai in the facility he ends up in #and wai is Dangerous too #and they bond over this #before somehow pat ends up there too #and they meet up again #and this time it's not just friendship but they Fall In Love #bc what will be sadder than loving someone in that type of environment #where they cannot be sure what happens to any of them
