불가능한 일정이었는데, 인연이 닿아 좋은 원고에 그림을 그렸다. 어떻게 이기느냐 만큼 어떻게 지느냐도 중요하다. 욕심에 눈이 어두어 질 땐 5번 레인을 펼쳐보자. 누구를 이기고 싶은거지? 왜 이기고 싶은거지? 무엇때문에 이것을 하는거지? 라며 나에게 질문한다.

Even though it was an impossible schedule, I accepted in charge of the illustration of Lane 5. Because the manuscript was so good. How to lose is as important as how to win. The book talks about the right attitude toward the goal. When greed blinds me, I am gonna open Lane 5. It makes me think What do I want to beat? Why do I want to win? What am I doing this for?

The book shows various emotions on the birthday. My nephew Seo-yul, just a fourth grader in elementary school, recently said we should live thinking about what we can do for other people.  I want to live a life blessed by others and bless them because I was born in the Blue Star Earth with great luck.

엄마가 되었다 해도, 두려움을 이겨내는 것은 여전히 어려워. 엄마가 아루한테 개와 고양이를 무서워 하는 걸 이겨내는 데 더 많은 시간이 필요하다고 말했을때, 아루는 괜찮다고, 우리한테는 시간이 많다고 말했잖아. 엄마는 그 말을 듣고, 마음이 놓였어. 좋은 엄마가 뭔지는 잘 모르겠지만 천천히 좋은 엄마가 되어도 괜찮겠구나 싶었거든.  

Even though I became a mom, I still need a lot of time to overcome my fears. I said to Aru I needed more time to overcome the fear of dogs and cats. Aru replied to me, "It's OK. we have a lot of time." I felt much better. I don't know what an exactly good mother is. But I felt like I got time to be a good mother.

Bow wow means Hi. Meow-meow means Hi Hi.

아루가 어릴 때라 재료를 고르고 다듬을 시간이 없었다. 그래서 선택한 수채화였는데, 지금은 가장 좋아하는 재료가 되었다. 생계를 유지��기 위해 그렸던 묘사적 그림들에 지쳐있었다. 꼭 있어야만 하는 것을 보여주고, 그 외 이미지는 스윽 한 선으로 그어 버린다. 내가 세상을 인식하는 방식과 그림 그리는 방식이 조금은 가까워지고 있다. 매번 용기내어 한 획을 그어보는데, 또 어렵게 느껴지곤 한다. 멋지다 해도 자연스럽지 않은 것은 또 싫다. 까다롭다. 까다로운 게 나이다.

Aru was a newborn baby, so I didn’t have time to pick and trim the materials. So I chose the watercolor, Now it became my favorite. I was tired of the decorative illustration I drew to make money. I drew what It had to be there, and I did the other images in a single line in this book. The way I perceive the world and how I draw is getting a little closer. I draw with courage every time, but it feels hard again. Even if it’s cool, I don’t like things unnatural. Picky. It’s me who’s picky.

2020년 가을 원주 문아리 5.3에서 ‘임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀’ 책을 바탕으로 한 전시를 진행했다. 높은 완성도와 재미가 있는 전시였지만 코로나로 인해 많은 방문객을 받을 수 없어 아쉬웠다. 전시장 입구에 관이 있고, 관 속에는 ‘나는 _____살다 갑니다’ 라는 문구가 적혀있다. 관람객은 밑줄 위에 단어를 넣어 문장을 완성해 볼 수 있다. 전시장 안으로 들어가면 커져 버린 귀 때문에 죽어버린 왕들의 공동묘지가 펼쳐진다. 공동 묘지 위엔 500개의 종이 토르소와  200여개의 비석이 놓여있다.

세상을 떠났을 때 나는 어떤 모습으로 기억될 지 생각해 보는 시간이었다. 나는 ‘감탄하며’ 살다 갔다고 기억되면 좋겠다. 

In the fall of 2020, I participated in the exhibition based on my new book “The King’s Ears are Donkey Ears” in Wonju Munari 5.3 in Korea. It was a high finish and fun exhibition, but many visitors could not see it due to the Corona virus. It’s a disappointing part. There was a coffin at the entrance of the exhibition hall.  The phrase was written ‘I lived in _______’ in the coffin. Visitors could complete the sentence by putting words on the underline. Inside the hall, there was a cemetery of kings who died because of their big ears. In the cemetery, there were 500 paper tortoises and 200 paper monuments. It was time to think about how I would be remembered by people when I passed away. I wish I could be remembered ‘She lived in admiration’

옛 이야기 토끼와 호랑이를 패턴으로 만들어 책을 구성하였다.상징적인 색, 형태들을 사용해 책 속에 담긴 감정과 의미를 재미나고 효과적으로 전달하려고 노력했다. 제본 방식과 색 사용에 있어 아쉬움이 있지만 패턴으로 작업한 첫 책이라는 것에서 의미를 찾는다.

My new picture book Korean folktale ‘The rabbit and the Tiger’ is composed up of patterns. I made a pattern using symbolic colors and forms. It helps interestingly and effectively deliver emotions and meanings contained in the book. I am not satisfied with the binding and the use of color. But I find meaning in that it is the first book I worked on in patterns.

Aru, did you know you grew up in Mommy’s belly? You were like a tiny sweet pea growing and growing and growing. Now You are too big to go back in my belly. It was magical. I felt like an apple tree to the apple of my eye. How about you? How did you feel inside Mommy’s belly? Were you ever bored? -No, it was so much fun! Do you know what an umbilical cord is? Mommy would breathe, and the cord passed the breath onto you. Mommy was your oxygen. -Wow! Mommy, you are amazing. But what does that mean? It means we breathed the same air together.

Crinkled wrinkled Plastic bags all assumed this was the end. Now is the end. No one will find us. Maybe someone will use it to throw away the trash. All plastic bags sighed hopelessly. Then the plastic bags heard someone singing outside the window. Crunch Crunch A yellow bag is curious about what happens outside.

Swoosh The yellow bag rides the wind and flies up the sky.

Let’s see whom this little, light creature meets while floating all around! Through its journey, this flying plastic bag meets various sorts of people, saying hello to them, and sometimes gives warm hag to people who need somewhat comfort in their mind. After reading, we realize that we have inner peace as the people inside the book is ‘us�� who eagerly want to share our feelings with somebody.

그날 엄마가 좀 아팠어. 진짜 잠깐 자면 나을 것 같았어.그래서 너한테 딱 30분만 자겠다고 했는데, 너는 그걸 받아들일 수 없었나봐.

(아루가 글이 없는 이 에피소드를 읽어 주었다. 엄마 발이 맛있을 것 같아서 물었지. 그런데 엄마가 하늘로 날아갔어. 그리고 다시 땅으로 떨어졌지. 그런데 소리 한번 지르고는 다시 눈을 감았어. 나는 엄마를 공룡으로 변신시키고, 내 장난감을 다 줬는데도 엄마는 눈을 뜨지 않았어. 그래서 엄마 엉덩이 뒤로 가서 노는데, 엄마 똥꼬에서 지독한 가스가 나왔고, 나는 기절했어. 우리집 마루도 갈색이 됐어. 아 그런 이야기구나.. 몰랐네….)

I was sick that day. I thought I’d get better if I slept for a while. So I told him I’d sleep just half an hour, but he couldn’t accept it.

(There is no writing in this episode. Aru saw the illustrations and told me the story. “I bit because I thought your feet might be delicious. When I bit you, you flew up into the sky. And then it fell back to the ground. You screamed once and kept closed your eyes. I turned you into a dinosaur, and I gave you all my toys, but you didn’t open your eyes. I was playing near your butt, and there was a terrible gas coming out of your ass, and I passed out. The living room floor became brown, too.” That’s an interesting interpretation. )
