the bandage that usually remained securely fastened around his wrist hiding the mark there had been forgotten in his rush that morning. it wasn't intentional, a slip of the mind - perhaps one he'd done intentionally after spending time with shen on more than one occasion. still he'd not expected it to come up in conversation. aksel had never spoken about it, he felt foolish to have allowed it in the first place and for it to become what it was now... it was better kept a secret.

there were some parts he could tell without saying too much and scaring of the other he hoped. eyes drifted to the exposed mark and then to shen. " my father gave it to me years ago, " he began but hesitated before speaking again. " he told me if i could endure the pain it would prove me to be a man and i believed him, " aksel shrugged his shoulders as he met shen's eyes with his own. " now i realise that was just foolish and he wasn't telling me the real reason for it. "

The Fantasy

I guess what bothers me the most is the fantasy.

Yes, I still fantasize about you.

In this daydream, we run into one another. Perhaps a coffee shop, or at a wedding. Neither of our partners are there. You approach me, "It's been so long!" Yes, it has. You hug me. I can smell you. It's a punch to the gut. I can remember what it was like when you held me. I think you notice it, the shift in me. You can see I felt something. You smile. My heart races. "Well, I'll let you go..." I say, aiming for a graceful exit. "Wait," and you grab my wrist, Trapping me. You force me to look at you. "I know things didn't end well between us, But after all this time, can't we be friends?"

In the worst fantasies, it's more than that. You profess some lingering feeling for me, Regret at losing me. You look at my body, scanning, too familiar. You want me. It's written all over your face that you want me. I pull my hand free. I smile.

"Get fucked."

I turn my back on you. I walk out. I never look back. But I cherish the look in your eyes. So that's what it looks like when you're hurt. After all these years! It's worth the roiling in my stomach, The cold sweat, The tears for my younger self, The panic, Intrusive thoughts, Flashes of memory, The need to call my therapist.

"This time, I was in control. This time, I rescued myself. This time, he couldn't make me do anything."

I guess what bothers me the most is the fantasy. It bothers me because it means you're still around.
