had the honor and privilege of attending the Innocence Project gala yesterday, with over 700 souls. at the very end of the night, over 20 people who were exonerated took the stage, having served, collectively, over 200 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.
my favorite part of the evening was hearing the testimonies of these innocent people, some who spent over 40 years in jail and were finally freed due to the work of the Innocence Project.
they were still optimistic about life. still so grateful for the little things, like the ability to shower when they want, or to enjoy the taste of a beer in summertime.
one of the biggest donors who makes this work possible said he feels closely tied to the cause because his great grandmother was a survivor of the Holocaust, so he knows what it is like it be wrongfully persecuted, and in many times, due to your race and economic circumstances.
in 4 hours, the gala raised over $2,000,000.
thank you, Dr. Yusef Salaam and @kevrichardson77, for sharing your stories about what it was like to be a part of the @central_park_five.
thank you, @cipriani, for hosting.
i won’t ever forget this evening, or these people, for as long as i live.

On this #MLKDay, we are inspired to celebrate and reflect on the meaning behind Martin Luther King Jr.’s words and actions. The immeasurable legacy he left behind shows us the power we have, as individuals, to affect change in our communities. Use your power to empower. Progress is progress, but there is still more change to be had and plenty of work to be done: in housing, education, healthcare, justice, and the economy. May we continue to use the power of our voices and words to move closer to a more equitable society. Albert Woodfox who served the longest time in solitary confinement of any prisoner in the United States has died at 75 from complications from Covid-19. He was held in isolation in a 6-by-9 foot cell for nearly 44 years at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, known as Angola. 🐈‍⬛ Known as one of the Angola Three, along with Robert King and Herman Wallace, Woodfox was convicted of killing a guard in jail, but always maintained his innocence. He says he was targeted for co-founding the first Black Panther chapter in Angola. He was released in 2016. His memoir is “Solitary: Unbroken by Four Decades in Solitary Confinement. My Story of Transformation and Hope.” Woodfox says that while speaking to people around the country, he is often asked to describe what solitary confinement is like. “We never had a reference other than our own experience,” he says, “but this coronavirus pandemic, now people have a small window into what it is like.” @democracynow @smithsoniannpg @smithsonian @nationalportraitgallery @decolonizethisplace @innocenceproject 🙏🏽 #AlbertWoodfox #angola #NationalBookAwardFinalist #PoliticalPrisoner #freetheangola3 #angola3 #angolathree #SolitaryConfinement #RobertKing #HermanWallace #BlackPanther #BlackPanthers #BlackPatherParty #LouisianaStatePenitentiary #HungerStrike #antiRapeSquad #powertothepeople #allthepowertothepeople #arethaFranklin #aintNoWay ✊🏽 (at National Portrait Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg6Dp43uRb1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Over 1,000 people have been executed via the death penalty in the U.S. since the 1970s.
Not only is the death penalty excessively cruel, but it also carries the inherent risk of executing an innocent person. Since 1973, at least 187 people on death row have been exonerated. But how many more will die due to this unjust system of punishment? 👉 Texas resident Melissa Lucio was sentenced to death in 2008, convicted for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter who died after a fall down the stairs. 👉But the death of Lucio’s daughter was a tragic accident and Lucio’s conviction was the result of coercive policing. Lucio has maintained her innocence for over 14 years! Our foundation supports the @innocenceproject, which helped temporarily suspend Melissa Lucio’s execution while new evidence is considered.

These individuals, wrongfully imprisoned for crimes they did not commit, undergo a transformational experience when finally granted their freedom. The reactions of these innocent souls upon their release are as varied as the circumstances that led to their wrongful convictions, yet each share a common thread of profound emotion. See More.....
