I was a bit stressed yesterday, who knew going over ideas for an "evil Kanan AU" would have such relaxing qualities 😭
Midnight ideas under the cut ~
Tumblr media
I feel like it could go both ways, the Empire killing Kanan or converting him - killing certainly saves time, but I feel like at this point there aren't that many Inquisitors left, with Cal hanging around, and there is the connection to his crew - would throw them off focus when they see the man they left for dead - imagine the angst potential
Why Malachor well, everyone was kinda there at one point heh. Plus, I think this could very well end up with Kanan still being blinded- but that's for another day.
Also Ezra doesn't have his scars, he never went after Kanan = the Grand Inquisitor never got the drop on him.
Aight, that's it for my nerd out.

MY THOUGHTS ON TALES OF THE EMPIRE BELOW WITH GRAINY SCREENSHOTS
@jedimasterbailey
Tumblr media
They got our baby girl in the same prison suit that Lumi had on 😭😭😭 the Jedi logo on the shoulder GOD. She looks so miserable
Tumblr media
Interesting outfit here. Is it me or does she look malnourished 🥺 (Also why dont we get to hear her speak at all???)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grand Inquisitor! She does not look like she wants to be doing this. Also the fact that she's using a green lightsaber here like Lumi 🥺😭 AHHHHHHHHHH
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Could that be Luminara??? 😢 She just looks more like her. Also before anyone says she's fighting Barriss, nope. That inquisitor is a diff lady, refer to last screenshot. I think Barriss is the one running in the foreground in the first screenshot and I hope it's to save her Master 😭 I really dont want them to make her evil. I hope it's more like she's forced to and is trying to find ways to get away or find Lumi and then get away.
Tumblr media
Vader just passed by 😳 Does she know? Cuz she was the first to bow and since her face was exposed i wonder if it was to hide since he'd def kill her
Just FUCKKKK I NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS THOUGHT THIS WOULD HAPPEN. They better do her justice I swear cuz she would not willingly be an inquisitor or work for the Empire in any way and i will die on that hill

I find it incredibly interesting that the Inquisitors lightsabers all look identical. There are some slight differences. They also go by the name of Brother and Sister, with the exception of the Grand Inquisitor. All their individuality has been removed by the Empire, they are mearly pawns in the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In contrast Jedi each have a unique lightsaber. They embrace what makes them unique, honing in on their special Force abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
They took these people who were Jedi Knights and temple guards and bled them they way they bleed a kyber crystal. Turning them into assassins whose only purpose was either to turn more force-sensitive individuals to the dark side or snuff out the remaining ones, therefore snuffing out hope.
*hope my rambling makes sense*

i'm designing lasher's lightsaber rn and i know this is the "telekinetics wielding laser swords" franchise, but the more i think about inquisitor lightsabers the more hopelessly planned-obscolescent the inquisitors become on the whole.
like think about how fucking ridiculous it is to be wielding a rapidly-spinning circle with a diameter of 2 meters that decimates anything it touches. including your limbs. do you understand how easy it is to stab yourself in the armpit or cut your own leg off with a spinning, tall-human-sized death circle. oh, and instead of giving the user more grip, it's just the standard saber length, and that + the giant handguard makes it super awkward, if not impossible, to use with both hands. so you've got 2 meters of rapidly spinning death circle, and you can only control it with half of the weight you should be able to. you can only rotate it to a certain degree as well, again because of the handguard, so tilting it or readjusting your grip is also awkward. oh, and you can use the saber as god's deadliest boomerang, but you'd better pray to god you catch it in the dead center and don't fumble on the handguard, or else it's goodbye hand, and probably the rest of you once the saber falls. and all your peers use this weapon. seemingly it's a membership requirement. and practically no one seems to like it. i'm thinking of trilla suduri's saber forms being wide-open and sloppy. i'm thinking of how clumsy the inquisitors, beside the grand inquisitor, look with their sabers in rebels. i'm thinking of how reva barely, if ever, uses the spinning function on her saber, or even uses it as a saberstaff. spinning sabers are flashy and startling by design -- but the only smart way to use them is to not be flashy or startling with them.
like. no wonder the inquisitors suck so much. they have to put so much energy into not getting killed by their own weapons. if that's not fitting of a story about people who thought fascism would keep them alive, i don't know what is.

OK BUT I'M ACTUALLY RIDICULOUSLY HAPPY THAT WE GET TO SEE THE EARLIER DAYS OF THE INQUISITORIUS. THAT WE ACTUALLY GET TO SEE MORE OF THE INQUISITORS.

Hey so we've got yet another innocent Jedi child who was living happily with her FAMILY who then was horribly traumatized by the Sith and forced down a path of revenge and destruction until she was so broken she only knew how to inflict the same pain on others so huh does that mean we're done saying the Jedi were the child-stealing cult and that the Dark Side isn't so bad or do we have to get ourselves a dozen more of these for the lesson to sink in?

He's a bit upset
There's a fanfic hidden bellow.
Quick need to know, this a part of my Inquisitor Kanan AU, Kanan is among other things convinced that his crew is dead and when he does come across them he believes they're a force vision and a part of some form of elaborate torture made by the Inquisitors.
Now let's say at some point he got rescued...
Hera lingered in the doorway of Kanan's cabin, a place she had stood countless times since he was taken. Fearful of entering, she hesitated, her unease only amplified by the room now being occupied once again. Kanan sat huddled in a corner, on the frigid ground between his bed and meditation seat. He didn't meet her gaze, his form slouched, elbows resting on his knees, eyes tightly shut. He could have been sleeping.
"What?" His words sliced through the air, icy and detached. Hera swallowed hard, summoning every ounce of courage she possessed, and stepped into the cabin.
"Kanan," she said softly. A flicker of surprise crossed her face as he opened his eyes and met her gaze, if only for a fleeting moment. Immense sadness shimmered within his yellow irises before he shuttered them once more.
"Leave me alone," he whispered, his head sinking low as he clenched his teeth. The urge to rush to him and offer solace tugged at Hera, but she heeded Ahsoka's counsel. They needed time for the Jedi to heal. Instead, she settled herself by the open door.
"Do you know where you are?"
Kanan snorted in response. "Good one."
"You're on the Ghost," Hera said, her brow furrowing. "You're home."
"I don't understand why you all think it's necessary," he muttered, raising his head to fix his gaze on the opposing wall.
"You're with your friends, with me," Hera pressed on. "You're safe."
"Stop it, will you?" Kanan growled, his fists clenching tightly.
"Stop what?" Hera asked, her confusion genuine.
"You can't deceive me again, and you know it," Kanan declared. "You've already made me do what you want, I'm not playing this game anymore."
"Kanan..." Abruptly, he turned, his piercing yellow eyes locking onto her green ones. A shiver coursed through Hera's spine. She never wanted him to regard her with such intensity, as if he yearned for nothing more than to tear her apart.
Hera could feel her heart wrench as Kanan dismissed her. She understood he had endured torment, likes of which she likely wouldn't be able to imagine, nor would she want to.
He spoke of them as if they were a trick of light, a speck of dust in his vision that would disappear if he so much as blinked and spoke to them as if they were someone he despised.
She couldn't bear to see him suffer alone. Not when she still felt responsible for it.
Hera met Kanan's gaze head-on. "Kanan, please, listen to me," she implored, her voice laced with urgency and sincerity and she hoped, kindness in the truth of her words. "I swear to you, you're safe. We're not your enemies. We're your family."
Kanan's brow furrowed, his eyes burning with anger. "You expect me to believe that?" His voice trembled with a mix of fear and frustration. But a sarcastic smirk curled on his lips as he continued. "What's the plan this time? You gonna make me shed a tear for the good old times? Maybe have a heart-to-heart with my padawan? Sorry, but I'm not biting."
Hera's determination hardened as she refused to back down. "I know it's difficult, Kanan. But look at us. Look at me. It's me." she said, her voice unwavering. She extended her arm. "You can tell, Kanan."
Kanan's hands clenched into fists, his knuckles turning white. He was clearly torn between the lies of the Inquisitors and the longing to believe in the safety of his friends. An inner battle raged behind his eyes.
Hera longed to see the blue green color of the tormented gaze...
Kanan slowly reached out to her.
Hera smiled with relief.
Then she felt a tightening pressure wrapping itself around Hera's throat. She gasped for air, her eyes pleading with him.
"Enough!" he bellowed, his voice laced with bitterness and sorrow. His eyes were darting around the room, looking for something or someone. "Show yourself! You've done it! So end it!"
Alarmed by the loud outburst, the rest of the Ghost crew stormed into the cabin. "Hera!" Sabine exclaimed, watching their captain suspended in mid-air.
"Kanan, let her go!" Zeb shouted.
Hera dared a look at the broken jedi and saw him looking straight at her, his face tightened in a mixture of fear, sadness and uncertainty. She attempted to say his name, but all that came out was a choked gasp.
"Kanan!"
Kanan's grip faltered, the anger dissipating as a flicker of recognition ignited within his eyes when Ezra spoke. With backwards stumble, he released Hera, his hand falling to his side. His shoulders slumped, burdened by his inner turmoil.
The three sentients gathered around Hera, helping her sit up. Chopper however rolled towards Kanan and shoving into his leg, spitting out curses in binary. Kanan watched the droid with an empty bewilderment.
"Chopper, stop it!" Hera snapped at the astromech.
Kanan looked at the Twi'lek, wide eyed, tears lining his vision. Clearly fighting with himself, Kanan whispered her name in a very weak voice.
"It's us, mate," Zeb assured him.
Kanan gave him a distracted look, then glanced at Sabine, Ezra, and finally at Chopper, who returned to Hera's side. A tear slid down his cheek, but he quickly wiped it away, looking down, waiting for something.
Hera rose to her feet and took a step towards the jedi, ignoring the warning looks from the others.
She extended her hand towards him a second time.
This time she thought she saw flicker of teal in his eyes as their hands met.
TBC...

Rise of the Red Blade thoughts
One of the things I’ve long been asking for is for canon to do something to address the Inquisitors. We partially got that with Kenobi, but Reva is more of a special case. But with Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade we do finally have something that does, so it behooves me to add my thoughts. We do get a lot of interesting bits from this book - including, at last!, some canon Seventh Sister backstory!
(Minor spoilers ahead - though if you’ve read the Darth Vader comics you know how this story ends)
First of all, on a story level, it’s entertaining and I think does a good character dive on why Jedi fell and became Inquisitors. Ishkat Akaris is the POV character and she provides an interesting angle on struggles with the Jedi Order. She’s neurodivergent, and while not specified I’m picking up ADHD. She struggles and never quite gets the support she needs. But she is an unreliable narrator, and there is a particular Roshomon incident from when she was young that we return to again and again, getting some different perspectives. Though the narrative (in true Roshomon fashion) never says which was the ‘true’ version so you’re just left with the various ‘certain points of view’. But as a look at someone’s personal journey to the Dark Side, where at of the steps seem plausible and fair from their perspective, it works really well.
But what the book is great for is showing, better than other canon material I’ve come across, what the war does to the Jedi. Communications are poor. Information is sketchy. And young, inexperienced and over promoted Jedi are being sent out as commanders into highly stressful situations. And it really shows how the sheer stress of the war, and how this starts corrupting the more inexperienced Jedi, as the pressure to achieve results in impossible circumstances starts leading them toward ‘quicker and easier’ answers, with even the brighter and more devoted Jedi starting to fray by the wars end.
It maybe doesn’t deep dive as much as I would like; and the timeline is a bit wonky in places (according to this the Jedi had the clone army before they went into the arena on Geonosis which ??), but as far as canon goes I think it’s one of the best explorations on offer.
There’s some other tidbits as well:
Confirmation that if you don’t connect with the Force regularly you will lose sensitivity to it and have to ‘relearn’ as per Kenobi.
We get a bit more in how the Inquisitorious works. Basically a perverse form of the Jedi Order. There are candidate Inquisitors, and when you ‘prove’ yourself worthy you get a Name (eg X Sister). Which was hinted at in Kenobi (the use of ‘Reva’ over Third Sister to emphasise her outsider status)
That said, numbering system still doesn’t make sense to me. I think the implication is supposed to be the number is the order in which a candidate ‘proved’ themselves, but I find it hard to believe that Trilla was the first one to do so. Particularly not as it says Fifth Brother joined willingly and Tenth Brother was already half-way there at the start of the war.
The Agricorps are back baby!
And some canon Seventh Sister backstory! To which:
She’s a little older than Ishkat, whose about 19/20 when the Clone War kicks off. So my rough guess would be that she’s about 25ish when Order 66 happens. So Seventh is definitely a Jedi Knight - which does tie with her line of dialogue to Ezra mocking Kanan for not achieving the rank.
She was Aayla Secura’s Padawan (asterisk on this one - the exact line is ‘trained by’ which is a little vaguer, but Padawan reads to me as the intent.) This would constitute a lore revision that Mirialans are only Padawan’s to Mirialans.
Something absolutely horrific happened to her to make her an Inquisitor. Which you might think ‘of course it did’; but Ishkat meets Second Sister and hangs out with Ninth Sister and specifically mentions sensing something appalling happening to Seventh. So yeah, we’re talking orders of magnitude bad in comparison.
(For those wondering who read A New Dawn Breaks: none of this will affect Sorfelia; I already had something terrible planned 😈)
So overall, I’d say it’s worth a read. And if you’ve read the comics there’s some fun Easter eggs here and there as well!
