You know what makes me very infuriated with Jiang Cheng (apart from everything else), if he had shut his mouth and was not homophobic for five seconds,none of the confusion of feelings leading up to the temple between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian would have happened. By the tree scene when Lan Wangji catches him it's pretty clear WWX is both aware of his own and Lan Wangji's feelings and comfortable with them. It's Jiang Cheng who makes him doubt himself and I'm still mad about it.

What fills me up with hate makes this even funnier is that there’s a not insignificant portion of the fandom that has made homophobic Jiang Cheng their Gay Icon™️. The man whose homophobic tantrum almost ruined the actual factual canonical queer relationship in the novel is now fandom’s queer fav.

Nothing but pure comedy.

the goofs about lan wangji and jiang cheng having so much history but still being indifferent towards each other are funny and all but it's also just like not true? even if you ignore subtext or inferences that require a little bit of analysis, like lan wangji being one of the biggest sources of jiang chengs insecurity and envy, or the fact that obviously lan wangji would feel negatively towards jiang cheng because he is often so volatile to someone he loves and wants to protect, some of the first blatant information we learn about both of their characters is that they Do Not Get Along.

jiang cheng is immediately antagonistic towards lan wangji and lan wangji outright refuses to speak or even look at jiang cheng, the implication of that scene being that this is not an uncommon interaction for them. one of the most iconic scenes of the pre flashback episodes is the Most Tense And Uncomfortable Tea Related Interaction On Earth. post res jiang cheng is constantly insulting lan wangji to his face and on many occasions lan wangji has to stop jiang cheng from hurting wei wuxian, the love of his life

but on top of that they both, at some point in their post res arcs, recognize that the other person is important to wei wuxian, and are willing to put aside their differences for that. for lan wangji, it's him asking wei wuxian if he'll tell jiang cheng about everything, telling wei wuxian "he's your brother". for jiang cheng, it comes at the very end of the show, when despite his lasting insecurity and anger, he lets wei wuxian go with lan wangji without reacting negatively even when he's alone, saying "take care" as he watches them leave together

like lan wangji and jiang cheng So Obviously have a plethora of feelings about each other and their respective relationships to wei wuxian its kind of insane to be like "haha but they just don't care isn't that silly". like what show are you guys watching

I really feel your post about being jumpscared by Jc apologies because it seems like even the most unrelated fic needs to shoehorn in the authors discourse opinions... Like recently I was reading something about Jin Ling and the juniors and there's randomly a couple of paragraphs about how Jc was a great caretaker and sacrificed so much for Jin Ling etc? And then in the authors notes they talk about how obviously Jc never actually hit him? Like what was the need

"what was the need" is literally what goes through my mind when i read a wx centric fic and the author suddenly turns one of them into a jc rights activist.. like there was this fic i once read where out of nowhere lan wangji went on this whole internal tirade about how wei wuxian was actually in the wrong in all of his and jiang cheng's disputes & it took me out of the story so hard i got motion sickness.

letting characters have their own opinions instead of using your own views as the basis for theirs is like, lesson #1 of character writing but i don't think these ppl got the memo 💔 bc lbr nobody in mdzs or cql has any reason to shill for jiang cheng like these people do, even jin ling has no issue admitting jiang cheng is in the wrong most of the time

By the way, I like JC as that "throw your bro under the bus" type of character. The Raccoon had so many chance to help WWX, but still chose to do the bare minimum and later made it worse for WWX. What a tragedy that JC would have nourished a strong brother bond with WWX, if he just simply stopped taking WWX for granted and had more faith in WWX than JGS.

I did blame the Purple bitch a lot for molding him into resentful, entitled and selfish being, but JC had the ability to untangle those toxic behaviors (He kinda did in the end for letting WWX go). Too bad it was way too late for JC to mend the broken bridge between JC and WWX after that debacle of the first seige.

Anon, this has been sitting in my inbox because I was afraid to open this can of worms. I've rotated this character nonstop for, like, the past three years. I got on Tumblr because of this character. I'm not even that wild about MDZS as a novel! I'm a SVSSS main! I don't know how I ended up here!

He loves his nephew so much. I love what we get about Jiang Cheng's relationship with Jin Ling, who had what was probably an indescribably weird childhood, but who has never once thought to himself that his uncle didn't love him. Jin Ling is evidently spoiled and rude but also so genuinely courageous, forgiving, and loving in his horrible teenage way. I love these two and they love each other!

He's dutiful. I think people sometimes think of duty as a burden, and obviously it can be, but I also think of it as an expression of care towards others. He sincerely cares about his responsibilities, which include all of the people who joined the Jiang sect to follow him.

He's supremely competent. We see the poor guy fail a lot, but he restored a massacred sect to Great Sect status in 13-15 years with what seems like no familial support and no apparent close external connections. He must be really, really good at his job.

He's such a bitch. He's here to make things hard and unpleasant on purpose! He's witty and will say the meanest possible thing he can think of in a fight! Just like his mother, he can sense your insecurities like a bloodhound and tear into them at will! I think this is a good and endearing quality (for a character, obviously).

He is profoundly screwed by the narrative. Dude is, as @winepresswrath puts it, "ontologically cursed." He exists to fail. His creator made him the most determined little toaster and then put him in 1000 unwinnable situations. He is trapped in, like, a bespoke torment matrix, that he only really escapes at the end of canon (dignity in tatters but nephew in hand).

Killer style in CQL and maybe also the donghua from what I've seen of the gifs? Fashionable king. Deeply uncool despite the drip, which endears him to me more.

Wang Zhuocheng's crying face. Yes, it's that gif set again. It haunts my dreams.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever written a meta on Madam Yu/Yu Ziyuan before? 🤔 Let’s change that!

Yu Ziyuan is a petty ass spiteful bitch who never loved Jiang Fengmian, showed no care for her only daughter Jiang Yanli, and cared for her only son Jiang Cheng only insomuch as he was a reflection of herself. There is not a singular nice thing she has to say to or about Jiang Yanli in the text, not even on the eve of her death. Towards Jiang Cheng, her “defenses” of him are all backhanded comments on how he isn’t better than the son of the woman she, herself, is jealous of, that he is unlikeable because he is her son, and that even his own father doesn’t want him. Jiang Cheng already feels unloved by his father from Yu Ziyuan’s perpetual harping before Wei Wuxian is brought back from Yiling, so this insecurity cannot be laid at his feet. On top of that example, people also like to claim that Jiang Fengmian was a “bad father” to Jiang Cheng because Jiang Cheng only remembers (which is already suspect because jc usually only conveniently remembers things that make him a victim) his father holding him a handful of times, but as for his mother? The only time he remembers her hugging (and kissing) him is when she knows she was about to die. He is 17 and has never been hugged by his mother in living memory. But she loves him (allegedly).

As for her (alleged) love and pining for Jiang Fengmian:

Of course, she was Jiang FengMian’s wife, and used to cultivate with him as well. Naturally, she should be called Madam Jiang. But, for some reason, everyone had always called her Madam Yu. Some people guessed that it was because she didn’t want to take on her husband’s surname due to her assertive personality.

Madam Yu came from the prominent Even after she married Jiang FengMian, she had always been out on night-hunts, not overly fond of staying at the Jiang Sect’s Lotus Pier. On top of that, where she lived at Lotus Pier was different from where Jiang FengMian did. She had her own area, where only she and a few of the family members she’d brought from the Yu Sect lived.

She refuses to be known as the Madam of the Jiang Clan. She refuses to integrate her people into her husband’s home. She refuses to stay in the same place as her husband in their home. She refuses to even be in their home except to prepare for nighthunts. And when she’s home, she only picks fights, claims that she’s the only one who sees what’s “really” happening but nobody listens because they don’t like her or what she has to say, then leaves again. This is not a woman that cares about the clan she married in to. This isn’t even a woman that cares about her immediate family. So why is she even here?

This culminates into the “petty ass bitch” part:

The entirety of the cultivation world knew that third lady Yu had cultivated together with Jiang FengMian when they were young. Jiang FengMian’s character was gentle, yet Yu ZiYuan’s personality was harsh. The two didn’t share too many interactions. Thus, although their backgrounds matched, nobody associated the two as a pair. Later, ZangSe SanRen came from the mountains, passed by Yunmeng, and happened to become friends with Jiang FengMian. They had even night-hunted together on multiple occasions. Both thought highly of each other. People supposed that it was very likely for ZangSe SanRen to become the next mistress of Lotus Pier.

However, soon afterward, the MeishanYu Sect proposed an alliance through marriage to the YunmengJiang Sect.

Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan knew each since they were young and had many interactions, but they were incompatible because of Yu Ziyuan’s volatile personality. Nobody considered them a pair despite being a perfect match on paper. Neither of them wanted marriage; neither clan proposed or pushed it. However, the moment another woman appears that is universally loved and is suspected to be made into the new Madam Jiang, suddenly MeishanYu wants to pressure Jiang Fengmian into this ill-fated marriage? The story makes it clear that the proposal only came into existence after Cangse Sanren became a rumored option—not during any of the other times Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan had met and parted without a care, not when Cangse Sanren first descended—while only Jiang Fengmian opposed the marriage. And who does Yu Ziyuan have a massive inferiority complex to, so much so that she’s willing to abuse the orphaned son of the woman to make him indebted to her family? Cangse Sanren.

Yu Ziyuan wanted to marry Jiang Fengmian not out of care or love but out of a petty desire to “prove” that the position of Madam Jiang was hers, only. Even if it meant consigning herself and another person to a loveless, violent marriage. From beginning to end, Yu Ziyuan was a person obsessed with her reputation and what she felt was “owed” to her as the daughter of cultivation clan leaders, and this led to the destruction of herself and her family.

okay cause i missed this point out on one of my last posts... the fact that jyl, who had extremely less privilege and power than jc did, as a woman and a weak cultivator, still stood up to the sects by defending wwx ' PUBLICALLY. a boy, who in the eyes of the gentry, was a son of a servant who had far rise up past his station, a dog who needed to be leashed. she defended him, in front of the gentry which could give off the implications she was sleeping with him - remember mianmian, who was accused of having the hots for wwx when she stood up for him. in fact, she WAS accused of that - didnt jin furen imply it was unseemly for her to be so close to an unrelated man ? and yet she announced that her a-xian was her 'didi', claiming him, putting him under the jiangs protection.

and yet, what did jiang wanyin, jiang zhongzhu, do ? he folded like the wet, thin paper tissue that he is under jin guangshans manipulations, succumbed under his own insecurities and petty envies, jealousies. he went far beyond the plan that wwx and him had agreed on, and declared his ex-shixiong an enemy of the cultivation world.

dont tell me jiang cheng didnt have power, that the jiangs were rebuilding and couldnt afford to go against the rest of the sects. because, at this point, yunmeng jiang had already grown fat off of what yllz had won them during the war. because he had no reason to declare wwx an enemy, to paint an even bigger target on wwxs back.
