Hell yeah, it's that time of the year again.

Going to make another post keeping record of this year's set of letters. Some cards haven't been found yet, so this post will be updated as I find more cards. If there is an asterisk beside a character's name, that means I only got the text itself but there may be errors and needs to be verified with the picture of the card itself. If any of you have pictures of letters that are either not there or need verification and don't mind showing to anyone, please send to me through DMs!

Since the cards freshly came out and some are still waiting for their own letters, all letters will be posted under the cut!

Super Titles Round-Up (June 1994)

This month: Superboy fights Silver Sword (and the Clone Plague)! Steel fights his nephew! Brimstone fights alcoholism!

Superboy #5 (June 1994)

Introducing Silver "Don't Call Me Surfer" Sword. Superboy #4 ended with the Kid collapsing in his kitchen from the deadly virus that's running through the Superman books. In this issue, his friends take him to a Navy base so he can be transported to Project Cadmus in Metropolis, where they'll hopefully cure him. It's there that Dubbilex informs them there is no cure. Which sucks, but hey, at least the Kid gets his first consensual kiss out of it (courtesy of Tana Moon).

Rex Leech's tactful reaction is "There goes the best meal ticket we ever had, Roxy," but Roxy herself seems genuinely heartbroken about Superboy's likely death (and/or that kiss).

Anyway, the Navy can't send Superboy to Cadmus right away because they're bombing an island as part of some tests, but the tests are interrupted by a flying guy covered in silver metal. This is actually Dr. Kaua, the guy who got mad at Superboy for misplacing a magical spear in Superboy #3 because he wanted to use it to become Hawaii's first native superhero. Kaua later got his wish when he stumbled upon a mysterious receptacle that blew up on his face and bonded him with some sort of alien metal that gave him powers. He's now using those powers to get back at the Navy for bombing his beloved islands and the goats who live there.

Dubbilex thinks Superboy should sit this one out, given the whole "You're currently dying" thing, but of course he doesn't listen.

After a fierce fight, Superboy manages to knock Kaua out right before collapsing (again). Kaua, or Silver Sword as the Navy nicknames him, is locked up in a secret government base full of scientists who can't wait to cut him open, but Superboy's example inspires him to keep resisting them. The issue ends with Superboy and Dubbilex finally reaching Metropolis, only to find the city turned into a war zone, which leads right into Man of Steel #34.

Steel #5 (June 1994)

Steel's nephew Jemahl finds out that his gang members "friends" were the ones who shot a little kid, ran over his sister Natasha (she's okay, other than her leg), mugged his mom in an alley, and now plan to take out his grandma. Jem takes some of that Tar drug the gangsters have been using to become superhumanly jacked and intends to kill the leader of the gang, but he ends up fighting his disappointed uncle instead.

(Side note: This issue's cover should have been a remake of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow #85 one, but with a muscular Jemahl instead of Speedy the smackhead.)

Steel has to contain Mega-Jemahl until the drug wears off and the kid collapses. During the fight, John Henry learns that all the hits on his family aren't just an unfortunate coincidence: they were actually orchestrated by his old boss/mentor, the Colonel. As he holds Jemahl's body in a Pieta-like pose (lots of that going around these days), John swears that he's taking the Colonel down. Permanently.

This issue also features a seemingly non-sequitur appearance by Fred Bentson, that weird mailman guy we met in Man of Steel #34. Fred is dutifully driving his mail truck across war-torn Metropolis when a bomb goes off and causes him to hit head on the wheel. Suddenly, he finds himself in a completely different city called Dakota, where he's immediately hit by a truck and grabbed by some sort of shadow demon. Just as suddenly, Fred is back on Metropolis, getting saved from that explosion by Superman... who looks weirdly cheerful for someone who is currently watching the city he loves get blown to pieces (see Superman #90).

Incidentally, someone who looks just like Bentson also shows up in Milestone Comics' Hardware #16, which came out this same month and is set in a city called Dakota. What a curious coincidence.

The Ray #2 (June 1994)

Part 2 of the Superboy team-up, this time featuring some actual teaming up. Last issue, we left Superboy unconscious and Ray about to be smashed by that burning mountain man called Brimstone. Luckily, Brimstone suddenly decides to ditch the fight and go for a beer; apparently, a "defect" in his programming has turned him into a gigantic frat bro. Once he's alone, Ray feels bad about apparently killing Superboy and buries him under some rocks, but as we've established by now, nothing can keep that kid down.

At this point, DC's most prominent jacket-wearing, earring-sporting superheroes actually bond for a bit...

...before going off to prevent Brimstone from emptying every brewery in Hawaii. They come up with a plan to turn Brimstone off by dumping liquid nitrogen on him, but Superboy gets confused and accidentally douses the villain with a truck-load of orange juice, leading to the moment depicted in the cover in which Brimstone eats Ray. Superboy gets it right on his second attempt and Brimstone is neutralized before his fiery insides can digest Ray, but by now the teen heroes are back to arguing like a couple of, well, teens.

Gotta admit Superboy and Ray are a pretty fun pair in this issue. Can't wait for them to meet again in like 8 years, when Ray joins Young Justice!

Showcase '94 #6 (June 1994)

One of the stories in this issue is written by Karl Kesel and stars Sparx, the girl with lightning powers from Superboy's "Bloodlines" annual. Sparx's family disapproves of her decision to become a superhero, so she left them and went looking for an aunt who is also estranged from the clan. The most interesting parts of the issue are: 1) Sparx continuing to display powers that Superman will eventually gain when Kesel turns him electric (like intangibility), and 2) Captain Boomerang referring to the Flash as a "red wanker".

At one point, Boomerang manages to knock Sparx out, causing her to revert to her girl form. Upon noticing that she's "a young one," Boomerang creepily says: "Could be ol' Boomer'll get some pleasure out of the evenin' yet--!" The aunt then turns into a spider-like creature and almost kills Boomerang, but Sparx zaps her with energy to stop her. Sparx is like "Wait, you tried to kill that pervert who attacked me? This must mean you really are evil like the family says and also killed your husbands!", so they part ways. Sparx and her family will appear again in the future, but I don't think the aunt ever will. Good for her, they don't deserve her.

Guilt trip: has Adrien try to commit suicide via Cataclysming himself for the sole reason they knew it would make them trend on social media, the show and characters literally never address it or talk about mental health.

Rose exists literally just as inspiration for abled parents watching, telling disabled and chronically ill children that its pretty much their responsibility to be cheerful and peppy all the time and that no one should ever learns they're disabled because it's ~so embarrassing~

Mega Leech: "We care about the environment!!! And don't you know You're a bad person if you're not spending your every waking moment protesting and trying to save the planet?? Also Marinette in particular is soooo sorry because she forgot how important the environment is :( :( :( we're so progressive aren't we???"

Bakerix: "Roland is outcast from his family so much so that Marinette didn't even know he existed, this is because *checks notes to make sure we wrote down the very obvious metaphor for racism* he doesn't want to bake french bread with Rice flour, which is very clearly about how he doesn't want his son to marry a Chinese woman because it's "not proper! That's now how it's done!" Roland refuses to even acknowledge Marinette as his mixed race granddaughter, until she finally forces him to see that... Mixing wheat and rice flour makes a better bread? That she, the product of her white french father, is not "ruined" by her Chinese inheritance?

Introduction

Well, hello there! I assume if you’ve come to this page and decided to read under the cut you already know what Pokemon are, and are mildly interested in them! I myself have been a big fan of the franchise for a large part of my life, so have gotten pretty attached to the over 900 individual monsters that make up the massive encyclopedia of Pokemon that now exist. Since Pokemon has been so impactful to me, I thought it would be pretty fun to write a series of articles that review and talk about various aspects of every single Pocket Monster design that I enjoy, or wish could be better. It seemed like a good writing exercise to go through with, anyways.

Before starting, I wanted to give a shoutout to @bogleech, who has written his own series of Pokemon reviews over on his own website. They’re what inspired me to start this project in the first place, and while we do happen to share a lot of the same opinions and observations, rest assured a lot of my favorite designs differ quite a bit from those of Mr. Leech. I also would like to give a shoutout to @inikavulpixelreviews​, who I discovered while doing research for this project who also wrote their own set of reviews! The more the merrier, I say. Check both of them out, if you’d like.

I’ll be formatting my articles in more or less the same way as theirs. Pokemon will be grouped up by their evolutionary families, and each will enjoy at least one paragraph of me describing their designs, origins and inspirations, and what I like and dislike about them, as well as anything in between. At the end of each article will be a numerical score and alphabetical rank, just to give a quick summary of my overall thoughts on the family. For some, though, my thoughts may be more complicated, so they may have multiple different scores per family.

Speaking of those ranks, here’s what they’ll look like!

Any alternate forms, evolutions, or generational gimmicks like Regional Forms, Mega Evolutions, or Gigantamax Forms will also be included in the same article as the original family to simplify things a bit.

Also, as of writing this introductory page, Generation Nine is right around the corner, and it is rumored that its full Pokedex has been leaked. While I have seen those leaks and know what may be coming in the future, none of what the upcoming Scarlet and Violet games introduce will be covered until we get around to reviewing Gen 9 as a whole… eventually. This includes what has already been shown in promo material, like Paldean Wooper. All the new stuff will be grouped together, and waiting will be nice anyways since all the artwork should be uploaded by then.

Posts will be uploaded on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm EST each day, so keep an eye out and check in!

And of course, remember this is all my opinion. I don’t mean to push any of this as fact, and won’t get mad at anyone for saying they like a Pokemon I don’t or saying they hate a Pokemon I love.

Advice Porn, Doomscrolling, and Achieving Greatness

I just read the Paul Graham mega-essay on 'How to Do Great Work'

It was brilliant as always. My key takeaway - follow your curiosity and act earnestly, and everything else will fall into place. It also largely validates my long-held ideas to lean into what makes me weird while being intellectually honest with myself.

My bigger meta takeaway is that I get too hung up on the comfort of advice porn. It feels good to read something that validates my beliefs on how the world works and how to achieve success. Today it's Paul Graham, yesterday it was Kevin Kelly. The other day it was Tim Ferriss. They all say the right things, and they all gel with my world view, and I feel great after hearing them. But how does that translate to what I do?

This brings me to the other gem from the essay that struck me:

"Just as we overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can do over several years, we overestimate the damage done by procrastinating for a day and underestimate the damage done by procrastinating for several years."

I'm definitely guilty of this. I keep putting off stuff that I wanted to do from years ago. I read my notes from 8, 9, 10 years ago, and my aspirations are still largely the same - establish a writing outlet, do master's, work in a tech company, start a business... I'm lucky to have a good idea of what I want to do, so why not do it? This is especially striking when I see people like the environmental science guy, or the Data Machines lady, or even my artist friend Miggy, who 8 years ago was struggling in the same office as me, and now dominating the art scene as Distort Monsters. These are mostly my peers and they have gone so far and achieved so much. I won't deny that there's a hint of envy for what they have achieved, but it's also inspiring, and it makes me want to get started with my own projects, especially the creative ones.

But this is where discipline has to come in.

The doomscrolling death spiral still torments me as the ultimate productivity leech. I spend hours and hours swiping down the Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter newsfeeds. It makes me feel bad about not accomplishing things, which makes me want to scroll through the feeds again as a temporary salve. I can feel my attention span and focus getting dangerously short. Whenever I steel myself for a focused activity, I keep getting tempted. I've tried to purge these apps from my phone (and that helps quite a lot!) but I keep going back to them. Plus there are other sources of distraction that sap my attention, like Youtube and NFTs. It almost makes playing games and watching shows (who others may consider pure time sucks) as productive because I at least complete something while focusing on an activity. So I have to keep reminding myself - boulders > rocks > pebbles > sand

Having said all these, I believe that I'm getting better with acting on my dreams. I follow an okay cadence of writing once a day, walking over 12K steps everyday, hearing mass once a week, completing one book a month, and publishing one post per month as well. I'm doing alright with my teaching job and relationships. I am eating less, sleeping a bit better, and working out more. My biggest hack to get to these goals is a simple one: listening to audiobooks and podcasts while walking and working out, while taking in the view and the air and the sunlight, while taking occasional notes along the way. It's a four-birds-one-stone activity that relaxes me and enlivens me while also making me feel like I'm cheating time.

Where I have to improve is the follow-through. Another hack that works well for me here is to use good 'ol pen and paper as a way to organize my thoughts and connect the dots. Then I have to do a much better job to convert these raw notes into longer-form writings that I could use, share, and publish. I have to put more of myself out into the world. I need to keep reorienting my focus outward rather than inward. Yes, I should still create for myself, but with the motivation of benefiting others (like having an idea click so I could share them more convincingly) rather than out of vanity. I should keep imbibing the value of consistency, to direct my tendency for inertia in a positive direction - as a way to build momentum rather than a reason to be static.

Interview with Adrien Agreste! Subject: The Oxygen Project.

Ok so I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this addition to a post I made on my main blog about Adrien low key trashing the Agreste brand the way Robert Pattinson does Twilight. I know it was meant to be more of a goofy idea but my head is full of angst and this is what I came up with at 4 a.m. lol.

Alya smiles warmly as Adrien settles into the seat across from her.

“Are you ready?” She asks. He gives her a slightly nervous smile but nods. She nods to Nino who hits record and Adriens face immediately smoothes over into a pleasant and unreadable mask. It’s actually a little freaky to watch.

It’s a Monday afternoon and they’re set up in the art room during their lunch period. Adrien looks as perfectly neutral as always. Non flashy designer labels and tousled hair that probably took 20 minutes to style. For once though, his actions will be a little less perfect and easy to swallow.

“Hi Adrien, thanks for agreeing to an interview on the Ladyblog, I’m glad we could finally do this.”

He smiles and considers for a moment before answering, tiling his head a degree, “The pleasure is mine Alya, especially since I’m the one who approached you about doing this.”

That’s true. Right after the class joined Mylene and Ivan for their protest of the Oxygen Project Adrien asked to speak with her. He was upset that he had been tricked into modeling for the project without knowing what it was for. While most of his die hard fans had gotten wind he didn’t support it, he wanted to farther remedy the situation and use his position to reach a wider audience. Of course there weren’t many platforms he could do that on behind his fathers back, hence asking for Alya’s help.

“Still, I know interviews aren’t your favorite. Otherwise I probably would have asked you a while ago.”

Adrien smiled again, a little more genuinely (the one she knew Marinette was so fond of), “I don’t really like probing questions from journalists about my personal life. The fact that you’ve never asked or taken advantage of knowing me means a lot. I trust you.”

“Personally I think it’s a little crazy you have to do all of those interviews at all. You’re only 15, your life shouldn’t be so public.”

Adrien lets the smile fall several degrees. It’s deliberate, he’s letting people see his discomfort, “Well, it kind of goes hand and hand with all of the modeling. I’m the face of the Agreste brand.”

Alya nods and looks down at the papers in her lap, “Which is the point of our interview today, really.” They had agreed on what was and wasn’t to be talked about before hand, however they don’t have a planned out dialogue. They agreed that they both do well with more organic conversation, and it’s important the interview comes off as very genuine.

Adrien nods in agreement and Alya continues, “Now that the plan for the Oxygen Project is officially canceled, it’s time to clear up what your involvement with the promotion of it was. Nearly everyone in Paris saw the ads that ran.” Unfortunately it had been to late for Mayor Bourgeois to cancel the first few days of ads. For nearly a week Adriens face played on every television in the city, telling everyone about what a great breath of fresh air the project would be.

Alya hands him the first photo in her lap. It’s of him with the class after they first arrived at the protest, looking interested but not particularly emotional yet. It’s from the video that she filmed, but there was a pretty low view rate on the protest coverage. The interview with Adrien will probably get anywhere from 3 to 5 times as many.

“What not everyone realizes is that you were present during the planned tree cutting ceremony and following protest. So what was going on for you at this point in the day Adrien?”

“Our whole class had just gone to the park to support Mylene and Ivan, our friends who lead the protest. Right after we arrived Mylene started arguing with the Mayor about whether the project was good for the environment or not.”

“That girl has a hidden fire!” Alya adds, “I have a section dedicated to activism on the blog now. The video from the whole day is there but I also posted some smaller segments explaining the conflict and a few more that Mylene recommended on how to get involved.”

Adrien gave his most genuine smile yet, “I watched those! I hope your viewers take the time to check them out. I know the super hero fights are exciting, I mean I’ve been glued to your blog from the start, but I’m glad people like Mylene and Ivan are reminding us to keep our eyes on the big picture too.”

Alya nods, “So am I. Ok, it was during this argument that the ad was first shown correct?”

Adrien lets the smile fall completely this time, “Yes. Apparently the plan was always to air it for the first time during the tree cutting ceremony. It was also the first time I’d seen it.”

“I’m sure most of our viewers have seen it already, so I’m not going to play it now,” Adrien shoots her a grateful look, “Adrien, she says kindly, “I remember how surprised you were when the ad played. Do you want to tell everyone why?”

Adrien looks down at his hands, “I hadn’t known what the ad was for when I filmed it. I thought it was another one of those silly perfume commercials.” Alya isn’t sure if him saying “silly” was a slip up or on purpose but she struggles not to laugh.

“Did someone tell you it was a perfume commercial or did you just assume when you were given the script?”

“I was told it was for perfume.”

“Can I ask who by?”

She thinks the discomfort is genuine this time. Everything else is the video isn’t that bad, but this line could bring hell for him.

“My father told me it was.”

This isn’t news for Nino or Alya but she pauses for a long moment to let viewers digest that before asking her next question, “Do you know why he lied to you?”

“I suppose he thought I wouldn’t be ok with doing it otherwise.”

Alya smiles, a little proud, before handing him another picture. She’ll edit them into the screen for viewers to see later, “Well he thought correctly. Here’s a picture of you standing with Mylene and our friend Marinette, forming a physical barrier so the trees wouldn’t be cut down,” she pauses for a moment while Adrien examines the picture, “I gotta say, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so angry.”

“I had just found out my image was going to be used to promote an anti-ecological plan that would harm our city. My friends had spent months trying to prevent it. I was furious.”

And Bam! As soon as she posts this video Adrien’s empty head, pretty face, good boy persona is shattered. He just admitted to having feelings. Angry ones. Directed at his father. Not to mention opinions on political matters. That is not the pretty face most of Paris is familiar with and fawns over.

“I’d be angry too,” Alya sympathizes.

Adrien puts the photo down and looks at her with a serious expression, “That’s the main reason I wanted to do this interview. For better or worse I have a lot of sway with my fans and public opinion. There’s still some controversy about the Oxygen Project being canceled so I want to be very clear that I do not stand with it,” he looks directly into the camera, “The oxygen project would have only helped the people profiting from it. The only ethical solutions for our city, and the whole world, are complicated, long term, sustainable options that will protect and rejuvenate our planet. No one has said it better than Mylene and Ivan so please go check out those videos under the activism section. Help if you can, and spread the word about the truth. It’s important that people know when they’re being lied to by a corporate campaign.”

Alya realized she stopped breathing for a moment because oh my god that was so good. She manages to quietly clear her throat and thank Adrien for the interview again. He plasters back on his polite smile and they give a brief hug before she gestures to Nino to stop filming.

“OH MAN! That was awesome!” Nino pulls Adrien into a one armed hug and doesn’t let go.

Adrien smiles a little bashfully, “You think? It wasn’t to much?”

“No way Adrien,” Alya cuts in, “the whole thing was great but that bit at the end? Amazing. Mylene will be thrilled.”

Nino pulls away from their friend a bit and clasps his shoulder, “Are you going to be ok though? Your old man is not going to be cool with like, any of that, is he?”

Adrien purses his lips and shrugs, “Don’t worry about my dad, I can handle him.”

Alya can see the fake nonchalance a mile away. Marinette is the queen of it after all, so she tells him, “Adrien this is really brave of you but I just want to make sure you know you’re in charge of this narrative. I probably won’t finish editing everything until tomorrow because I have a project to finish tonight. If you change your mind there’s no hard feelings. Or if there’s something you decide you want left out I’ll work some editing magic.”

Adrien smiles but her words don’t seem to relieve any tension, “Thanks Alya, it means a lot. By the way, where’s Marinette? I thought she was coming?”

“She’s probably just got caught up with something but I’ll see if she messaged me.” Alya checks her phone and realizes she left it on silent after the test last period. No texts from Marinette, but there is an akuma alert which explains her absence. She tries to ignore the immediate twinge of worry.

Adrien suddenly looks up from his own phone and rushes to grab his bag, “I actually got to go, my dad wants me home until the akuma attack is over. Best keep my head down until the bomb drops tomorrow right?” He rushes out before Alya or Nino can respond.

Nino sighs after his best friend runs out, “It’s so unfair he’s having to rectify his dad’s bad choices.”

Alya takes his hand, “I know. Something tells me this won’t be the last time he does so either. We’ll be there to support him though.” Her boyfriend gives her a soft smile and she kisses him on the cheek, “Come on, I want footage of that akuma fight.”

Nino glances down at his phone, “Actually it looks like the fight just ended a minute ago.”

“Wow that was short. It couldn’t have gone longer than the ten minutes we did the interview with Adrien for.”

“You’ll catch the next one,” he grins at her, “one way or another.”

She laughs, “okay turtle boy, let’s go get some lunch before we have to head back to class.”

They run into a slightly dejected Adrien on the way. He gives them an interview smile. They all find Marinette and get lunch. They keep the conversation light and avoid talking about the bomb Alya’s going to post tomorrow.

This is self indulgent. I really need Adrien taking some control of his life and standing up to his dad. Yes it’s painful but it’s so important that Adrien puts some distance between them in the public eye before Gabriel is revealed as Hawkmoth. I’m just hoping that can actually happen in canon but I have many fears this season.

My Thoughts on Mega Leech: We’re all missing the point!

While we’re all clowning about whether or not Adrien is a sentimonster, we’re not discussing the positively gorgeous thematic content of this episode! I would like to fix that. 

First off, we have a young girl is literally afraid of her own shadow. But she’s knowledgeable and she’s passionate. And she knows something is wrong and no one is listening to her. And she picks herself up and finds her courage over and over and over and over again to speak out. 

This is beautiful guys! Because this is what activism feels like! No one cares!! 

And who is she speaking out against? 

She’s standing in the way of a giant tractor come to destroy the park. 

She’s standing up to the friggin’ mayor of Paris who would prefer to dismiss her for being young and naive. A man in a position of privilege who cannot respond to resistance or take criticism on his own. He sends the police to put this rabble rouser back in her place. 

FOR LAW AND ORDER. 

And he does it! The police officer removes Mylene and Ivan from the scene. They literally showed the police officer blatantly in the wrong! Do you know how rare that is?! And how good of a potential conversation that is between kids and their parents - to have an example where the police officer is not protecting the citizens, but rather doing the bidding of wealthy white men?

And at first, even her friends are like, “Why are you against this project that is for the environment?” 

And she explains!! That’s what they want you to think!! They say they’re going to help, but they are literally going to destroy this planet so they can sell us clean air in cans while they claim to be the ones saving it. Something that should be free - something the trees are already doing. And something that would could make better by planting more trees!! Not cutting them all down. (It even points out that solving these problems is not that simple! That we’re going to need a ton of different small ways to tackle the problem). 

(I even appreciate the Adrien bit where he’s like - I didn’t know that’s what this commercial was for. It models how we exploit our own - make them represent and fight for the system that destroy the world they are supposed to inherit). 

And then, after fighting so hard, and maybe even gaining some traction because now there is public pressure and media pressure on the politician. Asking him, is this true? Is this what you’re trying to do? After all of that, the wealthy and the powerful take over the narrative completely with literal brainwashing!! They take Mylene’s friends and family. They are now all against her. And what does she do??? 

She starts giving Marinette a pep talk about how fear is okay. It’s normal. And that we have to keep going forward anyway. 

But then even Marinette is overcome by brainwashing, and Mylene is alone. She’s lost everything. She’s in a puddle on the floor crying about how it’s all her fault! And how does Ladybug pick her up and inspire her to be a hero? 

BY REPEATING EVERYTHING MYLENE HAS BEEN SAYING THE WHOLE EPISODE RIGHT BACK AT HER!! Because Mylene just needed to hear it from someone else because she was beginning to doubt the voice in her head. 

And what super power shall we give to the aspiring activist? 

Why the ability to turn into a friggin’ army! We give her the power of many. The ability to share her message with everyone! The ability to destroy the brainwashing, and help people to see the truth. 

And the episode continues to hammer home the idea that this corruption (the powerful who are literally LEECHING off this world and all the people who live here) is so big with so many resources with millions of akumas, that it feels impossible to fight. How can anyone fight all that? 

Well, you need a really big dedicated team!! (One of which has the power to be an army all by herself!) 

Now, am I optimisitc enough to think one vague comment from a well meaning super-heroine is enough to generate public pressure to get politicians to start at least pretending to act in our interests? No, not really. But I can appreciate the optimism of a children’s show that gave so many conversation starters with a simple example to talk about real issues that affect children and their futures, that gave a simplified template for how to do something! 

This episode was amazing! In a tier with Guiltrip, and I hope is more what our filler episodes look like in the future. 

But no, go ahead and keep obsessing over this scene: 

(Okay, okay, but what if Adrien IS a senti-monster and Gabriel just doesn’t know?! Yeah, yeah... I’m a clown, too...)

Hello, I just read your SentiAdrien post about why the theory hurts and the response post about whether it invalidates his existence. First of all, THANK YOU. Those were brilliant and well thought and the fact that you use practical applications from your own work as a therapist to show how the theory -could- work is really, truly great. You touched on many parts of the theory that most of us are having issues with, so at the very least, thank you for helping look at the theory from another angle.

But I have another question in regards to something I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else talk about, but I also just read ladyofthenoodle’s post you reblogged about how Gabriel controls Adrien in Ephemeral, so I want to expand on that and hear your thoughts on it. This line stood out to me from that post: “this is all garden variety emotional manipulation, but, if adrien is a sentimonster, is it really necessary?”

And my question is essentially this: If Adrien is indeed a Sentimonster, does that invalidate how he -responds- to certain situations, specifically when it comes to orders from Gabriel (as in, a trauma based response vs being literally under Gabriel’s control). Because yes, a Sentimonster can have free will, but that can be overridden by the person who controls the amoktized object.

When it comes to obeying his father, Adrien almost always gives in. We see him try to push back a little every now and then, but it doesn’t always go his way, so there’s often situations where Adrien has to apologize to his friends because “my father says I can’t.” Although Adrien gives in reluctantly, he does ultimately give in a lot of the time. I’ve always seen this as a realistic response from a child of a controlling/emotionally abusive parent. Where others might persist in pushing back or even outright rebelling, Adrien tends to be a little more defeatist, sometimes with the excuse that his father is just having a hard time because Emily is gone, which I read as a way to not only convince others that Gabriel’s actions are okay, but also -himself- on a subconscious level. Being Chat Noir does give him a loop hole out of this, but at his core, Adrien is obedient to his father and, again, I’ve always seen that as a child preemptively shielding themself from a controlling parent’s backlash.

But if Adrien is a Sentimonster, then wouldn’t it be argued that the reason he obeys so readily is that he’s controlled by the amok? And okay, let’s say maybe not even all the time, but this season, we’ve seen 3 specific instances where Gabriel twists the ring on his finger and Adrien is forced to relent. Let’s talk about the least harmless one: the press conference. Gabriel tells Adrien to take his place at the press conference but Adrien responds by saying the press is there to talk to HIM. And Adrien is 100% correct and justified in saying this. It’s -objective fact.- This conference is about -Gabriel’s- company, his fashion, his inspiration. Adrien might be able to field some questions, but it really should be -Gabriel- answering those questions. But Gabriel twists his ring and Adrien relents, unable to persist any further, even though he has every right to (flawed controlling parent logic aside).

Gabriel did it back in Mega Leech to silence Adrien and then later on in Ephemeral to stop Adrien from resisting his akumatization. Now that we’ve seen Alya and Nino break out of their akumatizations through sheer will then, theoretically, Adrien could also potentially break his. But is he unable to because -his own will- wasn’t strong enough (after the trauma of seeing his mother’s body and seeing his father transform into Shadowmoth, aka Gabriel’s emotional manipulation) OR is it just because Gabriel controls the ring that we suspect holds Adrien’s amok? - Which bring me back to my essential question, are Adrien’s responses explained by actual trauma or Sentimonster control? And if it is Sentimonster control, does that invalidate his responses/make them no longer genuine.

Because some people who relate to Adrien may find comfort/validation in how he responds to Gabriel, how obedient he is, and how slow his progress is to break out of that controlling/abusive situation. Because for some people, it DOES take a long time. For whatever reason (monetary, health-wise, etc etc), someone may not be able to leave an environment with a controlling/abusive parent/parental-figure for a long time and that doesn’t make their experiences any less valid, it doesn’t mean they are weak or worthless for being unable to get out sooner.

Sorry for the long ask, but this is currently my biggest gripe with the SentiAdrien theory.

Hi Anon! I'm glad my post was able to provide some catharsis for you and help with some of the more painful aspects of this theory.

Also, thank you for the long ask! It was very interesting hearing from your point of view and in all honestly I hadn't considered people might be approaching this from that perspective so it deepens my understanding of the mentality shared by the fandom and offers some wonderful practice for me! I really find this information fascinating!

Regarding your question, are his actions actually a response to trauma or a response of being a sentibeing?

And to that I say, I think it is a little bit of both, in that being a sentibeing is his trauma, or at the very least will be the source of his trauma and being a senti himself is a representation in kid-friendly media for someone who is being abused. His response is, as you said, more the mentality of someone being abused into obedience and compliance.

I'd also like to say, it's difficult to describe what he's been through as trauma currently (keyword here) as it is more of an ongoing source of trauma, more like child abuse by way of a sentibeing metaphor.

To explain this a little, a trauma response is a reaction in response to a specific trigger that reminds someone of the trauma, sometimes a bad dream or physical symptoms like increased heartrate and anxiety. People who experience trauma often avoid the stressor that causes them those feelings or they actively avoid thinking about it or burying the thought away.

The way Marinette responded to Chat Blanc would be considered trauma with no questions, as she is experiencing a reaction (nightmares) in response to a trigger (idenitities being revealed leading to their love which ended the world) that results in emotional dysregulation and distress, leading her to avoid even talking about it. This is a clear and obvious sign of PTSD to me.

Sentiadrien is a bit more complex because he is not technically undergoing trauma as he does not yet realize or even experience any of the same symptoms Marinette. What he is experiencing, and this is where the sentiadrien metaphor really shines, is ongoing abuse that may eventually become trauma (may being the keyword here as not all who experience a traumatic event will develop PTSD). I only hope he will, as strange as that sounds because him getting freedom from his abuser and senti-status is a lot like the work that is needed for survivors of abuse with trauma to heal).

To Adrien, this is the only life he has ever known. If he is a senti-being, then he will not know what it means to not listen when his parents give him a command. It's like how people who are born with colorblindness do not know certain colors and can't even describe them, it is all they know.

That's why sentiadrien would serve as a metaphor for abuse, because like victims of abuse Adrien doesn't know what is supposed happen in a "typical" household because what he is experiencing is all he knows. His obedience to his dad isn't done with fear or worry about messing up because he is traumatized, he does it because he has been convinced by his abuser that that is how he MUST act. There is a level of trauma there, but I would say it is more like someone being abused than someone experiencing PTSD.

That's why to me the most important part of a trauma story regarding Adrien's potential senti-status is that he needs to 1. find out he's a senti and has been abused all these years and 2. needs to want to fight back and heal.

It's like a person who has been in an abusive relationship or environment realizing what is happening to them and actively working to change. Typically the trauma will come after that escape, as sometimes individuals might still continue feeling trapped for a while after. That is where healing truly begins and when I can do my work to help someone heal from trauma.

I am hoping this will be a plot point of season 5, where Adrien is able to recognize that he was abused, then we may see signs of trauma or we may not, and in the end he will be healed/freed through the support of his friends and kwami along with the ability to take his freedom back and truly escape and heal from his abusers.

TL;DR: Being a sentibeing is a metaphor for abuse, while breaking his senti-chains is a metaphor for trauma healing. His responses in the show are a metaphor for abuse by way of sentiadrien.

Thoughts on megaleech

These are just gonna be in any order and any level of spelling and grammar, man:

Mylene's transformation is amazing, I love her music.

Polymouse's costume isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm still not a fan of the shiny parts, and I wish it would be more matte, but I can live with it.

Isn't this the plot from the lorax movie?

Cute Idea: Polymouse's hair looks like alix's because she admires alix's bravery and carefree attitude. Like, she sits next to alix every single day!

The message of this episode played out a lot better than I expected. I thought it was gonna be like, tech: bad, environment: good. But it gave a way more nuanced take via greenwashing, denial, scientific fraud, and slacktivism.

This feels directly inspired by the school strikes/climate protests that happened, and it's not hard to see why.

Also, (and I find myself saying this a LOT this season) I didn't expect the show to go as hard as it did on this subject. It outright stood up and pointed to me and said "trash!". And I respect the show for doing that.

Yet again the tsurgi brand is shown in a negative light. Inch Resting

I really think this seasons finale is gonna end in adrien deciding to go against his father. The final villian encouraged risk taking right? What's a bigger risk than standing up to gabriel? It's gonna bring all of his emotions to the surface Mullo's eyes are pink, mylene's are yellow so WHY is polymouse's eyes GREEN???

Mullo's powers are way more than I thought previously. Like, polymouse was EFFECTIVE, damn.

Ladybugs entire fucking entourage following her around after she jumps is AMAZING.

Oh, and both akuma names for mega-leech don't really make sense, right???

Something I also noticed: Mylene was once described as a trickster by one of the early promo's (I think?)

Mullo IS that trickster.

This doesn't really relate to anything, but either way I guess.

I am not going to give all of my fics that were completed this year because that's over 30 and that's a lot (though the vast majority of them were one-shots), so here's a highlight reel.

That's. A lot. That's a lot of words. The bulk of it is about 80k to the fic I wrote for the ML Big Bang which I will start getting to share with all of you on January 4th. There's some one-shots and unfinished fics here and there that I didn't post, so I added on another 10k, which is honestly probably an underestimate.

That I published? Ahh that one's hard. Probably stained glass variation of the truth? But I love all of them ;-;

5. Your fav scene:

It is days like today where I wish my big bang fic was out already, because the answer would definitely be the pineapple scene, but noooOOOooo. I think I have to say i could run from it all (but i'd only get lost). It only has one scene, so it's very easy to pinpoint which scene from it is my favorite.

6. A scene or fic that challenged you

The big climactic scene in Atlas Telamon in chapter nine actually reads as a lot of smaller scenes because I cut it up for the organization of the chapter, but it's technically one scene, and I wrote it as such. It was very difficult to write, because the entire thing was teetering on the edge of too much information vs. not enough -- how much do I reveal about the Butterfly? How much do I reveal about Gabriel? Whose perspective should this part of the story be in? That, on top of the fact that I generally struggle with action, made that scene so difficult, but I did love it.

7. A line of writing you're proud of

Again, I want to say the pineapple scene in my big bang fic, but I'm not allowed to. God I can't wait until I can share the pineapple scene.

But aside from that, I love this line from 25,913:

[Luka's] voice had to be like the gentle waves of the sea, moving from motion to motion but indescribable in any movement and indiscernible from what it’d been doing just a moment before.

I don't consider myself one much for poetry but the use of the letter "m," -- motion, motion, movement, moment -- makes the sentence sound very musical. (Is that a pun? If so, unintended but appreciated.) It's a sentence that sounds the way it's describing, and I just love that line. (Would you believe that I wrote it on the road, and that it was entirely coincidental?)

9. Something that inspired your writing

This one I can answer even though it's about my big bang fic, thank God!! So, I love AJR, and when OK Orchestra came out I was listening to it on repeat. 3 O'Clock Things is 100% the inspiration for my big bang fic (which also has a title now, Strangely Familiar).

Please bear in mind that my URL used to be "animatics-ill-never-make."

So I was listening to the song and I was basically like, "Okay, this is a song about the vulnerability of a conversation at 3 AM and how revealing it can be to be honest. What if it was about Marichat and Ladrien? What if it was like about them visiting each other and slowly getting more stressed with the weight of the secrets they're carrying?"

So the earliest conceptions of my big bang fic looked nothing like what it looks like today. It was an animatic about Ladrien and Marichat.

But I got to thinking more specifically about what the animatic would be: what the scenes would be, who would say what, etc. (I do this with essentially all of the animatics I'll never make.) And when it came time to answer who's saying which verse, it became very clear that none of the verses really matched either Marichat or Ladrien.

But they did match Alya and Nino. (I can elaborate on that in another post.)

It spiraled from there. The question became, "Why do they not know each other's identity?" The answer: They didn't go to school together, so they never dated. Okay, how do they know each other? Well, post-Hawk Moth defeat, Adrien and Marinette introduce them; first they're introduced as superhero partners, then several years later they're introduced as civilians. So on and so forth until I got a DJWifi roommates AU, and then I took my chances biting off probably more than I could chew to write it for the ML big bang. As far as I know, I only have the second longest fic at just under 80k currently (and I still have one, maybe 2 more scenes to write). I am not at liberty to say how long the longest fic is but there's a significant gap.

And, great news everyone! 3 O'Clock Things by AJR was my top song of the year on Spotify. So thank them for my AJR.

I can also say with certainty that next year's big bang fic will be a whole lot less of a commitment.

10. Your proudest accomplishment

The big bang fic. It's, to my knowledge, the longest DJWifi fic on AO3 (though I could be wrong about that which is another rant). It's also the first time I've written something like this since 2018, when I finished my second original novel, and it is longer than almost anything I've written with the exception of a 100k unfinished ML fic.

11. Any writing goals for the next year?

Keep it up, mostly? Don't turn a "30k max" fic into an 80k commitment for a collaborative project? Next year is probably gonna be my busiest yet. I'm moving for the first time ever (not technically but realistically, yes, this is the first time I'm moving) and then it's off to university, so I'm not sure I can commit myself to too much right now.

Ok so we have the three sisters Honey, Weiss, and Bronte Dubois. The three are originally from Hoenn, though they’ve all moved since reaching adulthood. They’re all in their mid 20s. {Content may update occasionally}

First is the eldest sister. Stern and serious, Honey managed to complete her gym circuit (though defeated by the Hoenn champion) and had a successful run as a Pokémon Contest star, then settled into a career as a professor’s assistant and teacher at the region’s trainer school. Currently, Honey has settled into a job on @prof-peach ‘s Dōtaku Island, serving as a guard to prevent intrusion into the northern half of the island and to prevent poaching. Her team is as follows:

Janus - Girafarig (purebred). Honey’s partner pokemon. Brave nature. Is the leader of the team and unafraid of going toe to toe with much larger pokemon, favoring close combat unlike most members of his species. Very protective of children and small Pokémon. Keeps a chew toy for his tail. Big enough to ride on these days due to age and stored energy. Uses Crunch, Zen Headbutt, Return, and Thunderbolt. Has Inner Focus ability.

Plum - Crobat (Swoobat mix). Zubat!Plum was the first Pokémon Honey caught on her journey. Hasty nature. Enjoys racing more than fights, but in a battle is a high speed long-range nightmare. Swoobat ancestry results in a lighter color, some fluff, bigger wings and eyes, and a bigger focus on Sp. Attack moves and access to Psychic. Very cuddly and affectionate. Knows Hurricane, Leech Life, Sludge Bomb, and Psychic. Has Infiltrator ability.

Omen - Absol (mega). Contest winner and efficient battler. Impish nature. Met by chance while he was trying to warn people about an upcoming landslide despite being attacked by humans who didn’t understand. Asked to come along with her afterwards. Mega stone found by chance in mountains. Believed to have Mightyena ancestry, resulting in fur markings, bigger teeth and claws, and shaggier coat. Helps with classes that help break Pokemon myths and stereotypes. Knows Night Slash, Sword Dance, Shadow Claw, and Psycho Cut. Has Super Luck Ability.

Honeycrisp - Appletun (honeycrisp). Sweet old lady. Docile nature. Caught at an event held by farmers who raise apples and Applin line variants. Has a tendency to mother the other team members, even though 4/5 are twice her size or more. Honeycrisp variant results in slight color change and a sweeter aroma. Knows Apple Acid, Dragon Pulse, Recover, and High Horsepower. Has Ripen ability.

Glimmer - Sylveon (ruffled). Diva and contest superstar. Sassy nature. Raised from an Eevee and was VERY insistent on becoming a Sylveon. For some reason evolved to have ruffled ribbons instead of the standard. Knows Moonblast, Play Rough, Draining Kiss, and Mystical Fire. Has Cute Charm ability.

Lucky - Lapras (shiny). Last to join the team. Quirky nature. Found being stolen by poachers; quickly rescued and brought to local specialists for injuries. Ended up bonding w/ Honey during this time and decided to come along. Used to be a spokespokemon for Lapras conservation and anti-poaching. Knows Surf, Ice Beam, Body Slam, and Sing. Has Shell Armor ability.

Weiss is the middle sister. She immediately fell in love with Ice types as a child and became a Type Specialist. Yes, she does dye her hair that color for the Aesthetic. Earned all her gym badges in Hoenn but decided against challenging the Elite Four/Champion. Despite her type preferences she’s a very warm and friendly person, and loves to travel, though she’s settled in Alola now. She’s currently petitioning for a position in the Island Challenge, though has settled for writing about her travels in the meantime. Her team is as follows:

Yuki-Onna: Froslass. Bronte’s partner Pokémon since a Snorunt. Quiet nature. While not a species variant, the patterns on her and her Snorunt form were circles instead of the usual shape. Holds many Contest ribbons. Knows Blizzard, Aurora Veil, Shadow Ball, and Hail.

Wave: Dewgong (Walrein variant). Caught during a seasonal migration during her Pokemon journey. Careful nature. Walrein ancestry results in bigger fins, larger tusks, and a fluffy ruff as well as a predisposition towards melee combat; as such, he prefers to fight rather than perform. Tends to act like the leader of team. Knows Dive, Iron Tail, Aqua Ring, and Drill Run.

Jumbo: Mamoswine. Caught as a Swinub. Bashful nature. Has always been a shy Pokémon, despite his massive size. However, no one should mistake that for a lack of power; he is the team’s main physical powerhouse. Often helps clear fallen trees and such. Knows Earthquake, Avalanche, Ice Fang, and Ancient Power. Has Oblivious ability.

Flurry: Ninetales (Alolan, Shiny). Caught as a Vulpix when Weiss first moved to Alola. Calm nature. Is rather vain and likes to be groomed. Prefers to never let opponents get close, specializing in long range combat. Knows Dazzling Gleam, Ice Beam, Extrasensory, and Hex. Has the Snow Warning ability.

Grace: Aurorus (caped). Acquired via wondertrade as an Amaura. Has a frill that extends down her back and smaller frills on the back of her front legs. Relaxed nature. Is a very zen Pokémon who is difficult to provoke and is very fond of naps. Knows Freeze-Dry, Ice Beam, Protect, and Flash Cannon. Has the Snow Warning ability.

Gloria: Frosmoth. Caught as a Snom while visiting Bronte in Galar. Bold nature. Is a social butterfly and likes to hang out with visitors. Took the longest to evolve, so occasionally forgets she isn’t a tiny Pokémon anymore. Knows Quiver Dance, Bug Buzz, Blizzard, and Hurricane. Has Ice Scales ability.

Bronte is the youngest sister. High energy with a loud personality, it isn’t any wonder she ended up as an Electric Type Specialist and a big Pokémon Contest star. Ended up moving to the Galar region and settling in the city of Jouleburough, home of the minor circuit Electric type Gym. She worked her way up the ranks to eventually take over as Gym Leader, and now has her eyes set on getting onto the Gym Challenge circuit, famous for her “Electric Terrain” and “Speed Demon” double battle formations. Her team is as follows:

Zeus: Raichu (Alolan, purebred). Bronte’s partner Pokémon since he was a Pichu. Evolved while visiting Weiss in Alola, resulting in his variant evolution. Part of Bronte’s “Electric Terrain” Double Battle formation with Beacon the Ampharos. Knows Electric Terrain, Psychic, Electroball, and Volt Tackle. Has Surge Surfer ability.

Leo: Luxray (brindle). Found abandoned as a Luxio in a power plant. Adamant nature. Has a brindle coat rather than the standard. Part of the “Speed Demon” Double Battle formation with Zap the Boltund. Is fiercely protective of Bronte and the rest of the team. Knows Thunder Fang, Wild Charge, Crunch, and Fire Fang. Has Intimidate ability.

Beacon: Ampharos. Caught as a Mareep. Quiet nature. Part of the “Electric Terrain” Double Battle formation. When not in Gym battles likes to wander the woods outside Jouleburough and use her tail light to guide lost people back to the city. Knows Thunder, Power Gem, Zap Cannon, and Dragon Pulse. Has Static ability.

Zap: Boltund (purebred). Acquired via Wondertrade as a child, inspiring her interest in the Galar region. Jolly nature. Part of the “Speed Demon” Double Battle formation with Leo the Luxray. Pure of heart, dumb of ass. Knows Play Rough, Thunder Fang, Bulk Up, and Psychic Fang. Has Strong Jaw ability.

Joulie: Galvantula. Acquired as a Joltick. Rash nature. Believed to have Ariados ancestry due to purple striping on legs. Is overly friendly, loves cuddles a bit too much for her size, and acts impulsively. Knows Electroweb, Bug Buzz, Giga Drain, and Thunderbolt. Has Compound Eyes ability.

Reverb: Toxtricity (amped). Gifted as a Toxel for rising up the ranks at the Jouleburough Gym. Quirky nature. On the rare occasion Bronte battles somewhere capable of Dynamaxing, Reverb is the go-to choice and can Gigantimax. Is a bit of a jokester and loves hanging out with the kids who come to the gym. Knows Boomburst, Overdrive, Toxic, and Venoshock. Has the Punk Rock ability.
