"gifs = art" could you please elaborate on that besides the skill that goes into it?

🫥 i have no idea why people are looking to me to explain something that has been repeated by many gifmakers and content creators for *years* and should be common sense anyways but...

beyond the skill that goes into gifmaking (the time it takes, the practice required, etc.) the different colorings, typography, blending and other proccesses that some gifmakers use in their creations absolutely can and should be considered an artform. look no further than the gorgeous gifsets some of my very talented mutuals have made:

@yenvengerberg becca's colorful sets are art as far as i'm concerned! like just look at this. she transforms the media she gifs and makes it look completely unreal in terms of sheer beauty and creativity.

@sith-maul one of the best creators on this site. nik is just so so talented. everything she creates is so stunning; you can't look at a set like this, for example, and tell me that it isn't art.

@hoe-biwan again, everything that flo posts is beyond incredible. i don't even watch star wars and i still silently nod my head and gape in awe when one of her sw sets is on my dash. just scroll through the comic book-inspired sets flo's made!!! that's art <3

@buffysummers ok alexandra is such a talented creator and a HUGE inspiration for me when i started giffing years ago. her eye for coloring and scene picking is out of this world! this is a recent set of hers that i particularly adore.

these are just a few examples, but if you scroll through my own blog or the various edit tags for fandoms, you would see more of what i'm talking about. there are so many talented gifmakers and editors on this site who take time out of their busy lives to create for us, and it breaks my heart when their work is discredited or disregarded or underappreciated. for their work to be invalidated and not considered art when it very much is? not only is it rude, it further demotivates creators from contributing to the site and makes them feel like nothing they create is good enough - believe me, i know that feeling all too well.

i've made extremely detailed and color-specific sets before like these, and it took me 3-4 WEEKS. EACH. i'm not exaggerating in the slightest. and since posting them, they've already been reposted here on tumblr and on other sites like pinterest, twitter, instagram, etc. if you even have like a shred of empathy you can understand why that would anger and upset me.

i don't know why people assume that gifmakers copy and paste the same 5 settings on their gifs, export them, and call it a day - it's not that simple at all. so much more goes into making gifs, and the majority of people on this site continue to laugh in our faces, steal the edits we spent so much time and energy on, belittle our work and claim that it isn't art (and friendly reminder! we do this free of charge and ask for nothing in return beyond clicking the reblog button, and so many of you can't even do that much). i shouldn't have to sit here and validate any of that - the creations should speak for themselves. you consider fanvids, fanart and graphics "art" - so why not gifs, which make up the majority of the edits on this site and, in theory, help foster/sustain discussion and fandom?

reposters all run up and down claiming that gifmaking "isn't that difficult" with zero experience... yet if they tried it themselves, they would know that's so far from the truth. and they DO know that deep down, or they wouldn't steal our gifs from us in the first place if gifs were that easy to make 💀

Forever and a day ago I came across a theory about Dany's son Rhaego surviving (the full theory involved Rhaego being spirited away by someone but I can't remember who exactly) and now im curious what would've happened if Dany had a daughter and the baby survived [either spirited away for whatever reason or got to be raided by Dany directly, I don't exactly care]

*Freya Allen being used as a faceclaim for the daughter purely on the basis of people using her as a Dany faceclaim, similar outfits and hair styles in Witcher as Ciri and the final gif in this being the 3-AM inspiration for this post*

2020 FRIEND APPRECIATION

hi friends! what a fucking year am i right??? not to sound cheesy but tumblr was genuinely such a safe and warm space for me this past year. there is no way for me to adequately explain how important the friends ive made on this site have been for my emotional wellbeing in a time when ive been largely isolated from my irl friends/activities. throughout 2020 this has been a place i could turn to confidently for encouragement, support, and good conversations. thank you all so much.

i wanna first give a special shoutout to the two amazing discord groups im a part of: Creatorhub and the GCWCA. through Creatorhub ive met so many incredible gifmakers, learned so many cool new things, and received so much love and support. in the GCWCA i get to gush about disney channel with people who really Get It™ and we all make each other laugh and smile. two amazing groups who have filled my year with so much joy.

so here it is!!! a friend appreciation post!!! to clarify: this is NOT just a laundry list of every single one of my mutuals (even though i do appreciate all of my mutuals) because i feel like that would be lacking authenticity and missing a personal touch. this is an appreciation post for a select group of people who, through their presence on my dash, kind messages, or just general support and enthusiasm, have noticeably positively impacted me in 2020. the people who i log onto this site for. people who i love to check on to see how theyre doing even if we dont talk that much, people who make my day by sliding into my inbox or DMs or tagging me in posts, and people who inspire me heavily with their creativity and passion. first creation and most recent creation of 2020: 

I basically only started giffing properly this year and there’s been a lot of improvement in my ps techniques and general editing style (although I still look at creations from like three months again and go eww). My first creation was this shoddy green avengers: endgame set and my most recent is this luke/vader entrance comparison (on this blog)

one of your favourite creations from 2020: 

I think that’d either have to go to my anakin/obi-wan appreciation edit or this Natasha set simply because both of these were definitely learning curves for me, and unlike most of my gifs I like how they turned out!

a creation you’re really proud of:

 I went through a phase of making move gif sets focusing on a pairing of colours so I think I’d have to say this aotc set because I like the colours I used (and I made it at like 1am after writing an assignment that wrecked my brain)

a new style you tried this year and a gifset that uses it:

 hmm, probably the giffing with multiple gifs using shapes?? So this Steve edit maybe because that star took some gif dimension calculating that made me want to yeet my laptop out the window

a creation that took you forever:

 I don’t think I will ever emotionally recover from this set inspired by @anya-chalotra ‘s trend setting gif making techniques. The thought process behind this has aged me, but it also VASTLY improved my ps skills in a short amount of time so thank u for the inspiration Ava!

your creation from 2020 that received the most notes:

this yellow to green gradient spirited away set (I think it’s my most reblogged post too so yeah everyone seems to love studio ghibli.. including me)

a creation you think deserved more notes:

 hmm, I feel like once I make a set I just forgot about it after a while if it flops lmao, I don’t need that failure to stay in my thoughts asjkfdh if I had to choose a set I’d say this anakin skywalker edit mainly because anakin deserves at least 1k ahah

a creation with a favourite scene/quote:

 I’d been a fan of star wars since I was little, but I’d never actually made creations for it. A lot of the ones that I made recently were for the Prequels Appreciation week hosted by @anakin-skywalker (because before all else I am a prequels hoe) so I’m just going to say an example of that is any of the posts I made for that (and I’m pretty sure I’ve tagged them all in this so oop)!

a creation you made that breaks your heart:

 maybe this anakin/padme/obi-wan set simply because although that quote was said originally by obi wan, it’s tragic to know that it fits them all perfectly.

a ‘simple’ creation that you really love:

 this pink/blue edit that I thought was ugly at the time and now I’m like I’ll probably never be able to make a set like that again because I have no patience asjkfd

a creation that was inspired by another one (add both your creation and the one that inspired it!):

 I’m forever inspired by the current techniques that gifmakers use so I’d have to say basically everything I make is at least inspired in some way by someone else aha?

a favourite creation created by someone else - I think if you ever see how much i word vomit in the tags daily, I am in awe at every single edit I see. The creativity and dedication that so many people have on here is inspiring, so here’s a select few that I particularly liked (I could literally go on forever so this was hard)

daenerys edit by @time-turner - i mean, how do i even begin? Each gif displays a different style of talent in gifmaking whether that be through the use of shapes, blending/overlaying gifs or different text effects and it’s just so so so beautiful

the times of day witcher set by @anya-chalotra - i don’t think i will never not be in awe of this edit. The thought process behind this is just incomprehemsible, I don’t even know where this idea came from but the execution is stunning. I especially love the isolation of colour in their eyes.

geralt of rivia yellow &b/w gifset by @rubyredwisp - the contrast between the selected colours is gorgeous, and the way the shapes are used to overlay the gifs is executed perfectly.

tony stark rainbow edit by @stardustony - vero always has stunning colourings on all of her edits, and this one certainly isn’t an exception. Just absolutely beautiful, there are no other words to describe this.

spider-man edit by @momentofmemory - the talent in this set is unreal. Excellent font choices and blending of the gifs, so so seamless & creative.

stranger things s3 rainbow set by @meliorn - as someone who loves colourful gifs as much as I do, a content creator appreciation list would not be complete without one of alice’s edits. The colouring is out of this world, and those shapes that are included in every other gif just bring the whole edit together so smoothly, and just add a whole other level of creativity.

star wars rainbow edit by @anakin-skywalker - talent, creativity, colour, dedication, this edit has it all. Absolutely stunning, the way each colour transitions so smoothly into the next one within this gradient is just wowwee. I could look at this all day.

one of your favorite creations from 2020: allison argent + hamilton. this is one of those sets where i knew exactly which scenes i wanted blended together and then managed to execute it as-intended and it just. ugh it’s so pretty. and painful. so my two fave things.

a creation you’re really proud of: what’s up danger + sam wilson. both the concept and the execution turned out fire, man—I switched up a lot of my typography choices from my normal thing and I love how it looks.

a new style you tried this year and a gifset that uses it: this og six set. i switched up my blending technique for it, and i really love how it turned out—i’ve been finessing that technique ever since, lol. 

your favorite coloring: this scott mccall set, because any time I make TW look visible—let alone pretty—it’s a triumph, but also working on that first gif 1)took forever and 2)turned out really pretty in comparison to the OG colouring.

a creation that took you forever: black panther + pray for me. my very first attempt at Big™ gifs, and finessing the scene choices, overlay techniques, and fonts took like. hours. i love it so much and  will forever be sad it didn’t show up in the tags.

your creation from 2020 that received the most notes: sam wilson + i’m captain america. tumblr didn’t eat the post despite the blm donation link (which can still be used fyi!). <3

a creation with a favorite scene/quote: this edit of quiet uptown murders me every time. the scenes/cropping/overlays i wanted just came together really well.

a new fandom you joined and a creation you made for it: nile freeman + quotes. the way i adore that woman and her strength and determination and gentleness?? yes good. the colouring & typography worked together really well for this set.

a creation you made that breaks your heart: i made this set on grief in the black panther back in july and it already cut deep at the time, and now it hits... differently. nikita gill’s poetry is excellent and getting all that text to work on a set of four gifs was a fun challenge.

a ‘simple’ creation that you really love: this tfatws set was put together & posted in under like 20 min right after the trailer dropped because I was so excited. the black & white effect was a  callback to this set from the previous year. ...except that set took like ten hours lol.

a creation that was inspired by another one (add both your creation and the one that inspired it!): i don’t think i have any sets that were explicitly inspired by another set this year, but i’m almost always staring at @anya-chalotra​’s work when i need insp.

hi! really love this blog concept. i was wondering if you had any gif coloring tips? i understand the basics re how to brighten and how to adjust some colors to make them slightly brighter/fader if present. but some people post gifs that are like, completely different colors than the original scene? and i have no clue how to do that, but it looks interesting!

Hello! Thanks for the question! So, each one has their own style of gif coloring, of course, it is very good to have inspirations before finding our own styles. 

The first tip before coloring the gifs is to be very patient, they will not always look the way you want, but you can’t give up, when you take the practice you will see that they will look beautiful and everything will be worth it, even tumblrs who make many gifs daily, sometimes they are not happy with the result. 

The second tip is understand the photoshop tools, each step and each layer you use in your gif can make all the difference in the end! But don't panic, take it easy, your steps will gradually become automatic. 

And the third tip, and now the coloring gifs, as I said earlier, each one has its own style and each one has their preference for photoshop tools, so it would be essential for you to learn to use some of them to see which one you like the most! 

I will indicate some very good tutorials that use different steps and tools for you to see which way you identify yourself the most, if you have any doubts about any step and process you can come back here and ask anything.
