Film Review - Lightyear (2022)
Film Review - Lightyear (2022) @FredaTalkingPix reviews spin-off #ToyStory #animation #ChrisEvans #KekePalmer #DisneyPixar
Prequels, origins stories ….. whatever you like to call them, they’re just as much a part of our cinematic diet as sequels. That they come with the same pitfalls is a given, so the idea of digging into the past of a character from a Disney Pixar classic could be a headscratcher. Except that the premise behind Lightyear is both neat and genuinely creative. Back in 1995, Andy – the boy from Toy…

fic-trope game: modern au?
F-minus-infity. We hates it, precious. Doesn't matter what fandom it is (even one that takes place in modern times already), if you take away whatever makes the world its own exciting element of the story—be it magic, spaceships, time period, the Force, robotics, shape-shifting, monsters, aliens, whatever—and don't replace it with something else fun that skews the world into a different but still singular and interesting direction (e.g. LotR but it's cyberpunk now, Star Wars with medieval trappings so the Force = magic, Animorphs but it's changelings trying to fend-off fae dopplegangers, etc etc) then I'm out. I'm out so fast I'm leaving dust trails behind me.
I have found one (1) exception to this so far, and that is @roselightfairy and @deheerkonijn's Modverse LotR AU, and the distinguishing factor there is that they didn't make it our world, they made a modern-ified version of Middle-earth. The world building they've done for those stories is exquisite, and it makes for a setting that is absolutely unique and fascinating in its own right, and every bit of it that I've read so far has been an absolute joy.
If more Modern AUs operated like that, actually building a world for the story to take place in that acknowledges and incorporates core elements of the story instead of stripping-out all the cool non-our-world aspects of the characters, their lives, what they do and where they live, etc, then I'd probably be a lot more on board with the concept because I do love deep and detailed world building and alternate universe crafting. But that's the only Modern AU that I've ever seen (and admittedly the fact that when I see the words "modern AU" I about-face so fast I might be tapping into the Speed Force means that it's entirely possible that this sort of thing happens a lot and I just don't see it, I do acknowledge that possibility) that doesn't just plop the characters smack into a generic "our world" setting, eliminate all the fun stuff, and call it a day. Bleh.
I'll read the occasional cute graphic novel that's set in our world with no "extras," yes, can't deny that. But prose fiction? fanfic? No thanks. Give me laserswords or magic or spaceships or kelpies or aliens or robots or elves or zombies or something.

I'd forgotten until I rewatched it just now that the first sign the Federation had that anyone onboard Voyager was still alive was when their newly adopted Borg crewmate hijacked alien insterstellar wifi to send their hologram doctor (who wasn't even supposed to be sentient or have any capabilities beyond assisting Voyager's deceased since the pilot chief medical officer in emergencies) to a top secret prototype ship whose entire crew had been killed and ship stolen. And then proceeded to take back the ship with another medical hologram meanwhile convincing him that things like going outside, fighting for your civil rights, espionage, and having sex are all things the other hologram (still not even recognized by Star Fleet as a person) should totally try out since he's had such fun doing them himself, telling Star Fleet Command about all the shenanigans Voyager has gotten up to, and then zipping back across the galaxy on the hijacked space wifi.
It's a genuinely fun episode and honestly very iconic of them. It's easy to see how even in universe Voyager has a reputation for being wild considering this was how they chose to make their we're still alive declaration.

I just wanted to say this.. hehehe.
I recently received an au idea from my writing partner and he said something about one of the possible reasons why Tip spared Pac in Cosmic Contest could not only be his morals, but he also could have lost someone in his life that Pac was pretty similar to.
Quick question to you first off: How do you feel about this idea and my partner deciding that our poor man needs to have this trauma as a possible outcome for upcoming notes in my au :')
Because I do not want that for Tip, he does not deserve that >:(
Awww that's actually bittersweetly wholesome 🥺
On one hand, yeah poor Tip doesn't deserve such heartbreak-
Buuuuuuut
On the other hand, it's a great opportunity to give him some emotional depth 👀
You could work with it and have it be so that, because of this heartbreak, Tip was actually a wholly different character than he is now.
Perhaps this person whom he deeply cared for was lost long ago, and with the passage of time, Tip has healed from the heartbreak but he's also grown reserved and a bit nonchalant. This person whom he lost had meant so much to him that when they passed, he didn't feel like there was any value or purpose to life anymore, but he trudged on. In his grief, he didn't care that Apex recruited him in his army. He was useful, and it gave him something to do amidst the heartbreak, which only increased his negative outlook on life.
With time, he got back to his chipper old self, but his time in the military has conditioned him into obeying Apex's orders without question, even if it clashed with his morale. He's come to a point where, since he doesn't have anyone he cares for in his life anymore, then what was the point in caring at all, and so he rode on the high of the insterstellar missions that Apex put him on.
Until he met Pac.
It was a wake-up call for Tip, seeing how similar Pac was to the person he's lost. Spending that bit of time with Pac reminded him of the time spent with his lost loved one, and Tip realised that his loved one wouldn't want him to continue down this road of serving Apex against his morale. The realisation was the catalyst that made Tip turn against Apex and help Pac.
Or something like that! You could work with it so that even though Tip has experienced deep heartbreak, he was able to grow through it all and the height of this growth was him helping Pac.

LEGO On A Budget 2024 #8: 60428 Space Construction Mech & 31145 Red Dragon
Peak has been acquired. Although we still got 2 more blogs after this, I think nothing will top what you're about to see right here. Just watch.
LEGO City - 60428 Space Construction Mech
Tumblr media
Okay first of all, how cool is the space theme? Honestly, every time I go to the Kruidvat and see the more expensive Space sets, like the 4+ Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery one or better yet, the Insterstellar Spaceship, I have to pinch myself to ensure I don't throw away another 18 bucks then and there. This one didn't seem as compelling at first, but that's the budget life, baybee.
Tumblr media
This is just the Ninjago set but better. I mean. The fact you got a couple extra small builds instead of merely some minifigs definitely adds to the experience to me. You may miss the cool swords, yet you get compensated plenty with how unique many of the pieces are. In terms of the mech itself, I find them to be fairly even, though considering the Space Construction Mech's more formidable amount of pieces, I am giving the edge to this one. It manages to be a bit more stable to stand upright, and it has the cool little gimmick of being able to move the left hand's fingers more or less freely.
Ninjago felt more unique, yet this was ultimately the more fun set to put together. A 'stellar' finale to LEGO City's pretty stacked budget lineup of early 2024. Haaaa.
LEGO Creator - 31145 Red Dragon
Tumblr media
Oo hoo hoo. Hoohohohoo. Hohohoho.
Yeah I love Creator 3in1. Such a novel concept, essentially tripling the value of your purchase by giving ya 3 things to build. Of course, the two builds that aren't the focus are gonna be smaller, but all that matters is what design you prefer. You're still getting your money's worth.
Tumblr media
Gonna start off with the smallest and my personal least favorite, the fish. And even THEN, this one is still excellent! It feels rather nice and chunky in the hands, like it's definitely a substantial build. Plus, there's plenty of movable parts too, like, everything you expect to move *does*. Certainly left a solid first impression, and this is the bottom.
Tumblr media
The bird is certainly a bit less unique as there's plenty of LEGO birds around I feel, and the idea of it flapping it's wings isn't AS compelling to me. The extremely adorable design more than makes up for it though. Look at it. Lil goofy cartoony bird. I really liked having this as a lil decoration for a couple days while I was busy doing birthday things.
Tumblr media
But here comes the bingus. The dragon from the cover. He thwarts all with his imposing (not actually imposing) size. Flexible arms and legs that look better than any other one so far. Flexible tail and wings, too. Hell, you can even open and close his mouth as was shown on the box. Extremely impressive and very cute to boot! The only mild concern is that it doesn't stand upright as easily as some earlier sets. Oh well, at least it ain't one of those Friends minifigs.
Current rankings:
The Space Construction Mech would've been number 2 at worst if it wasn't for the absolute delight that is the Red Dragon and co. It's a very cool set, maybe a touch boring for a Space theme, yet still very flexible and solid, with loads of unique pieces. Well worth adding to your extraterrestial collection.
LEGO Creator is quite handily my favorite theme, though. The value for money is rather extreme. For 9 bucks, you get two slightly smaller builds that look goofy and fun, AND a similarly cutesy dragon that can be messed with however you desire. 100% my favorite build by a long shot, it's not even on the same level as all the others. If there's any budget set to buy, it's this one. Same with most other Creator sets, honestly.
Creator - 31145 Red Dragon
Friends - 42608 Tiny Accessories Store
City - 60428 Space Construction Mech
City - 60411 Fire Rescue Helicopter
Marvel - 76275 Motorcycle Chase: Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock
Ninjago - 71805 Jay's Mech Battle Pack
Super Mario - 71428 Yoshi's Egg-cellent Forest
Friends - 42606 Mobile Bakery Food Cart
DREAMZzz - 71471 Mateo's Off-Road Car
Friends - 42607 Autumn's Baby Cow Shed
City - 60401 Construction Steamroller
City 4+ - 60410 Fire Rescue Motorcycle
City - 60400 Go-Karts and Race Drivers
Friends - 42612 Cat Playground Adventure
Minecraft - 21251 Steve's Desert Expedition
City 4+ - 60399 Race Car
Just two more sets left that I could actually review very soon. I'm excited to be done, my retro games have been giving me a stink eye for like 3 months now. The final FINAL post related to LEGO is scheduled for a later time, when i've already resumed the reviews of that OTHER major hyperfixation.

I've listened to the Insterstellar and Martian soundtracks like way too many times. Anyone got any other awesome space-themed soundtracks? If they're vaguely spooky thats even better.

Lia, which is your strongest spell?
Which is your favorite spell?
"Strongest spell, huh..."
"I think... depending on the case, it would either be the Debilitating Dichotomy from my curse spells or the Searing Light ray..."
"The Searing Light is much stronger against demonic and undead creatures, and it's up to me to make sure and hit my target. I'm able to make it as strong as I can, so it makes it a very valid option. It used to be more like a Moon ray before, but it evolved into something even brighter along the way...?"
"However, especially if my opponents aren't either of those, the Debilitating Dichotomy has no equals. It's also dangerous for me, but I've grown much more resistant to the threats of my curse in time, so I believe I'm most likely to avoid its negative effects and impose my will on my enemies much more dangerously. This is not something I use often, but against some strong enemies? I'm holding nothing back. My only issue with it is that it takes a toll on me for what concerns my control over my mystery spells. I need to get stronger to be able to sustain that, the Insterstellar Void and the Cosmic Form all at once."
"Heh, speaking of that, it's much easier to pick my favourite spell instead! It was a gift unlocked by a Shadowplane Walker I freed during our first days in Deadbridge, my Cosmic Form. I feel so free when I use it! At the moment, I even learned to enlarge my form and fly, other than being much more safer with it active than not! It only lasts for one minute, but that's generally all I need!"
