Berlin (Netflix) - episode 2
Back at the scene of the crime/hotel, Berlin accosts Camille in the middle of the street, opening with a winner of a line, "I just got divorced." The woman needs to read The Gift Of Fear (as does anyone).
Tumblr media
Anyway, Berlin rambles on while Camille is stuck in movie cliche land and has to change her outfit in the back of a cab and with another passenger there. She does an amazing job though, so you go, Camille!
Special mention to his disagreeing with the woman calling him a misogynist because what would a woman know right?
Roi and Cameron teaming up to do something that they're going to fuck up so badly, and with such far-reaching consequences down the line that you start to wonder about the fate of the heist itself (it *is* a heist series after all).
Tumblr media
Berlin "rocks out" with his peers and it is good.
Tumblr media
This man obsessed with bowties - is this a callback?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Camille tells him "you look like a man who lives in hotels" like it's not an insult??
(side-note - the Opera swicheroo is reminiscent of the Planetarium bit in my latest fic - love that)
Aaaand after hijinx and small-scale mayhem, the Rio-Cameron team failed, which I love to see  <3
Keyla designing this whole VR tech - told ya this girl's a Deus Ex Machina but in a hot (imo) and horny body - in the mid 2010s and instead of, idk, selling it for a whole bunch of money and not doing criminal things?
Tumblr media
And I may not get how VR works but isn't her avatar just... milling about in that VR space? It felt like Roi could have interacted with her avatar if he wasn't stopped but how does that-- unless that's not her avatar and Keyla has a VR girlfriend that she gets freaky with when she's in hotels?
Okay so I took this note while watching the episode: "The only common sense thing that came out of this man's mouth" and I can't, for the life of me, identify what I was referring to on the rewatch - if anyone knows what common sense thing left that man's lips, please let me know!
Back in the land of Berlin and the woman he fell in love with via the medium of stalking, drama happens (who knew that she was even married?? They did; both of them knew) there's drama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Berlin gets hit with his own version of "time will bring us back together one day". HOW DOES IT FEEL, HUH?? HOW??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Cool shot/transition though!)
And in her own corner, Keyla is following the old cliche of "nerd ingenue hot for the ~Bad Boy/himbo" and you know what? Shine on, you horny diamond!
Tumblr media
Wait, she's 36???????????????????????? (Presumably older than Berlin is in this? Lol okay) Love that she sees the age gap as a problem, Bruce IS a baby at 24.
Oh and since it's a heist movie, they set the scene for the heist, they're professional and successful which contrasts greatly with how they handle literally everything else (which they thoroughly fuck up).
Insert joke about Berlin's stamina:
Tumblr media
Oh and we still don't know why he's called Berlin. Everyone took fake names, but apparently they all went for people names, when Andres was like NO I WILL BE A CITY (or a pastry, whatever)

I've just finished watching Berlin
and I liked it more than I thought I will, so I will rant a bit. What is this show even about?
Heists? Checked. But it is not exactly about a well elaborated heist like LCDP. Those who start watching it expecting specifically that will probably be disappointed. The heist is pretty much just a setting where the characters and their traumatic romantic experiences exist…. Which, surprisingly, wasn't as bad as it sounds written like this.
Romance? Checked. This show is a bit like a commentary about the various faces of romantic love and it did it pretty well imo. And this comes from someone who in general dislikes blatant cheesyness. The only part which annoyed me was that a certain woman proves to be far too doe eyed even at the end of the story when she should have been raging… uhm… similarly to a certain other woman who kind of did the same through the whole of LCDP, so… yeah, let's don't get hung up on this.
Problematic main character? Checked. Initially I was sceptical about this spinoff. Although, I can understand why they probably chose Berlin. Pedro Alonso makes a good lead. Although his character is not doing too much leading in the series… And Berlin was both appealing and problematic, which is a good mix for a show. In this series though, he is only problematic… and very annoying. He was such a narcissistic, insensitive, asshole even in his "golden days" that I was actually cheering for the police to catch him, and throw him into jail. Don't get me wrong, I like the problematic characters, Zulema Zahir ended up being one of my favorites, and I liked her character even more after her spinoff, but it's the exact opposite with Berlin. (Nothing against Pedro Alonso, again, he does his job well.) And that's the point probably, to call him out on his bullsht, but the guy is still infuriating. Even if I'd watch another season with him.
Interesting people in the team? Checked. This was actually a nice surprise, which I didn't expect at all. In contrast with Berlin himself, I liked all the new characters! I might even say that more than most of the team members in LCDP.
Capable inspectors to put up with the team? Checked. (Ok, we all know who wins this cat and mouse game, so that's not even the point.) BUT they have so little screentime! When we found out that Najwa Nimri will be in the series too, and especially when they used her and Itziar Ituno to promote the show my enthusiasm for it grew exponentially. And then I felt let down. I would have loved to see Najwa in a lot more episodes than the two we got with her… This is the biggest negative aspect which I can complain about. But if I am honest, I would have preferred an Alicia+Berlin or Alicia+Raquel backstory as a spinoff, but that's another thing. (Unlike Camille, Alicia would have kicked Berlin's a** for sure.) But I am glad that we at least had her, and Raquel too, in the series. I hope the creators of the show know that there are quite many people who ended up more interested in the series because these ladies made a brief appearance in it.
Pretty visuals and nice music? Checked. I loved the sunny Parisian/French scenario in the show.
I don't want to be too strict with this series, because I enjoyed it so complaining about it would be hypocritical. The only negative thing I'd emphasise again is: Not enough Alicia Sierra!
And they have to make another season just to make Andres interact with Alicia. I wanted that so much!

I know it's only been a day but I'm dying of curiosity, have you watched the spinoff yet? What are your thoughts?
Hi anon! As you can see, I posted an initial ramble in an earlier answer LOL I talked about my feelings for the new characters there so I won't bore you and repeat it.
In a nutshell: new banda was "meh." Cameron was hot and I hope she gets more breakout roles, but the character was written like a Tokyo/Nairobi knockoff without any of their depth or magnetism. And I personally didn't like how her backstory was treated (it wasn't taken seriously for the right reasons imo). Keila was surprisingly likable but I keep making a lemon face when I remember her being horny for Bruce's sweat. Same for Bruce. He would have been enjoyable if not for the pubic hair fetish that he keeps bringing up asdfasdf
I was most interested in Roi, and he didn't disappoint, but I was baffled over why the spinoff ignored the most important question: how did he meet Andres and why did Andres take him in?? Genuinely needed a flashback there.
Main questions that the show needs to, but didn't answer:
How did Damian/Keila/Roi/Cameron/Bruce meet Andres?
Why did Damian/Andres choose Cameron and Bruce to help?
Why weren't any of these people in the mint and bank heists? You can argue that Bruce/Keila/Cameron weren't close to Andres, but nothing indicated Damian and Roi would abandon him. Alicia "exposed" their identities, but they don't know she did that so it's HUH
Why did Andres replace them all with Jakov, Martin, and Santiago? I mean, I would too LOL but in universe, there needs to be some explanation
Why is he calling himself Berlin?
We also still have no idea why Andres and Sergio have different surnames since this show addressed nothing about them having the same or different parents. No idea when or why Andres became a thief, how he came to love heisting, etc. Overall, the spinoff chose to flash romances between the new characters instead of giving us more information about Andres, which was a stupid move imo.
That said, there were things I did like about the spinoff:
Aside from that hilarious tracksuit, Pedro pulled the various turtlenecks off more or less. He was gorgeous more often than not, but for what? smh
The ending was tight, exaggerated, and fun
I actually was hyped when Alicia and Raquel showed up
Lots of jokes/moments landed and made me laugh out loud
Camille topping Andres every chance she got was Quality content
The heist itself didn't have me on pins and needles, but it was entertaining and I never got bored of it
I liked that aside from Roi, Andres wasn't close to any of the young people on the team- that makes more sense with his character and also helps me forget the 27yo comment asdfadf
The shoutout to Sergio :') Hermanito lives rent free in Andres' mind
General elements that I wasn't a fan of, aside from the forced romances:
Not a berlicia shipper, but come on- why would you put Alicia and Andres in the same time space and NOT have them interact!?
The car race confused me, and not just because Cameron's phone breakdown made me cringe. I honestly don't understand why the racers needed a girl to stand on the roof. What purpose? How does that help or hinder the race- what- at first, I thought the girls were going to whack each other with sticks or try to break the other person's car and this was a high stakes death battle. But no, they just did this to be cool.
Speaking of the race, I think too many "cool" moments became boring because they were tailormade for the cool new stars; there should have been more moments like Berlin at the "opera"-- Ex. we should have gotten Damian and Andres at that race instead of Cameron and Roi- that would have been so much funnier, and thus more memorable
Andres' speeches were repetitive and made no sense, even for him. BUT it was hilarious how in the show's effort to ignore Martin, everything Andres says and does makes it look like he's waiting for his one true love in the form of Palermo, a man; even that no homo moment with Roi was so on-the-nose it has to be foreshadowing Martin XD
The ending with Camille was too open for my taste, especially pointless because we KNOW they don't end up together
BUT I do want a season 2, just so we can see Martin entering Andres' life and a glimpse of Sergio + any scrap of an actual backstory for Andres. They already did the romcom route, so maybe they'll experiment with yet another genre in s2, who knows lol.
