@asongofstarkandtargaryen Do you remember the film La abadesa, the one I told you some months ago that was looking for its cast? Well, I got good news:
Antonio Chavarrías finalizes the filming of 'La abadesa' in the castle of Loarre.
The film will hit theaters in the fall of 2023. During the fall, the production company held numerous casting sessions in Huesca and Zaragoza to find several of the leading actors and extras. The director Antonio Chavarrías finalizes the filming of 'La abadesa' at the Loarre castle, where the team has been working for several weeks in January and February. The Romanesque fortress of La Hoya de Huesca has once again become the setting for a film set in medieval times as it is a unique location due to its beauty and history, according to the producer. Ridley Scott filmed 'Kingdom of Heaven' at this monument and, more recently, Paul Urkijo chose it for 'Irati', about to be released.
In the film, Chavarrías explores the most human and personal side of a historical character, Emma (Daniela Brown), a young abbess who decides to assume her power to face a patriarchal and dominant world in a society that relegated women to a role socially secondary and without content. The plot takes place in "a dark and violent time". A 17-year-old girl is named abbess and is commissioned to repopulate and Christianize border territories and those at war with Islam.
It stars Daniela Brown, known for her work in series like 'Días Mejores' or 'Com si fos ahir'. She is accompanied in the cast by Blanca Romero ('After', 'Bajo Sospecha', 'Bienvenidos al Edén', 'Física o Química'), Carlos Cuevas ('Merlí', 'Historias para no dormir', 'Smiley'), Ernest Villegas ('La luz más oscura', 'La Caza') and Oriol Genís ('Todos mienten', 'De la ley a la ley').
'La abadesa' is produced by Oberon Media (Mónica Lozano and Antonio Chavarrías), Wanda Visión (Miguel and José María Morales), Saga Films (Hubert Toint. Belgium) and Icono 2020 AIE. It has the participation of RTVE, TV3 and Aragón TV. The film will hit theaters in the fall of 2023 by Wanda Visión. Film Factory will handle international sales of the film. Likewise, the Aragón Film Commission, the Provincial Council of Huesca-Tourism of Huesca and the City Council of the Huesca capital have collaborated.
According to its director, 'La abadesa' is "a story that brings us closer to an almost unknown era, very hard and full of contradictions, to focus on the confrontation of three different, complex and antagonistic female worlds, that of Emma, Eloísa and Clara, only united by their status as women in a world that denies them any of their rights."
Antonio Chavarrías, born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona), is a screenwriter, director and producer of films such as 'El Elegido', from 2016 (world premiere on Netflix), 'Dictado', from 2012 (Berlin FilmFestival - Official Section) ; 'Las vidas de Celia ', 2006 (San Sebastián Festival - Official Selection); 'Volverás', 2002 (Best Director and Special Mention at the Mar del Plata Festival; Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Photography at the Ariel Awards) 'Susanna'; 1996 (Karlovy Vary Film Festival).

. I am excited to announce my sculpture which I meticulously reverse-engineered from a dream I experienced on December 29th, 2020, has been selected out of over ten-thousand artworks worldwide to exhibit in the 17th Edition of The Arte Laguna Prize in the Metropolitan City of Venice this spring. This is my first time being selected as a finalist for the award and my second time in Venice since I studied visual art abroad when I was seventeen. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the @Canada.Council for the Arts. This is also the first time the @Canada.Council for the Arts has awarded me a travel bursary in light of being selected as a finalist. My participation and presentation in the Arte Laguna Prize 17 international group exhibition would only be possible with their sponsorship. The Arte Laguna Prize is an international art competition dedicated to multiple disciplines for the progression of contemporary art—digital, installation, painting, performance, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and virtual arts. It was created in 2006 to provide opportunities for professional growth and vocational momentum from young to emerging artists. It creates awareness from the general public and a jury of established contemporary art industry curators. Be sure to attend the press conference for the exhibition on March 11th at 12:00 p.m. At the end of the press conference, the press will have a dedicated preview of the exhibition, including all the artists present, to stand by their work and answer some questions. Participants in the Press Conference include the founder of the Arte Laguna Prize, Laura Gallon, the writer of the exhibition text, Luca Beatrice, and the jurors of the 16th and 17th editions. The opening reception will commence at 5:00 p.m., Central European Standard Time. The Special Prizes will be awarded around 7:10 p.m., including the residencies, art for businesses, et cetera. The two overall winners will be awarded closer to 8:00 p.m. #ArteLaguna #ArteLagunaPrize #ArteLagunaWorld #BringingTheArtsToLife #CanadaCouncilfortheArts #KYLEYIP (at Arsenale Nord - Bacini Di Carenaggio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpP0m17AGs_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So proud to announce that my artist book, The Quickening, designed by @teunvdh, was given second prize for the Australian Photo Book Award last month at the closing of @photofestivalau!! The Quickening is now completely sold out, so copies are now only available through the resale market. Excerpt from the book can be viewed here. Please email or DM to see the full video, otherwise the book can also be viewed at the following libraries: V&A Museum, London International Center of Photography, New York National Library, Canberra Photography Studies College, Melbourne
~~~
“The Quickening is ambitious, subtle, inventive and deeply moving. I can hardly remember the last time I encountered a work that made such wise use of tactility in achieving a photographic vision. So many good decisions.” - Teju Cole The Quickening details the claustrophobia, myopia, paradoxical loneliness and luminance of new motherhood and the postpartum period. Riso and offset printed, this uniquely handmade book was published in a limited first edition of 250 copies, redolent of the number of days of gestation before the premature birth of the author’s son. Additionally, 30 copies from a special edition each come with a choice of one of two prints. This number is indicative of the number of days left until the child’s due date. Created as an editioned art book, each copy is signed and numbered. A variety of papers were used to reflect a haptic complexity in addition to a soft french fold that feels full and fleshy in the hands. A chaotic and varying bind with red string is a nod to the stitches used during the emergency caesarean birth of the child and no book is precisely the same. Finalist for the Vevey Images Grand Prix for 2019 Julia Margaret Cameron Award Honorable Mention for 2019 Solo exhibition at Rencontres d'Arles 2019 Winner of the BIFA Documentary Photo Book Prize 2020 Finalist for the Lucie Foundation Photo Book Prize 2020 Tokyo International Foto Award Honorable Mention for 2020 Official Selection for the London International Creative Competition 2020 Finalist for the Perimeter x PHOTO 2021 International Photobook Prize Winner of Belfast Photo Festival 2021 Bronze medal for the Documentary Book Prize at the Moscow International Foto Awards 2021 Px3 Paris Photo Award Honorable Mention for 2021 Australian Photobook Award Honorable Mention for 2022 Finalist for the 2022 SIPF Photobook Award SEE THE PROJECT ~~~ 90 pages with 116 images French fold Combination of offset and riso print Various uncoated papers Softcover with linen sleeve 8.6 x 11 inches First Edition of 280 + 20 AP   Self Published Photos & text © 2021 Ying Ang Design Heijdens Karwei, Amsterdam ISBN: 978-0-646-83323-1 Printed in the Netherlands ~~~ Critical Reviews: "The Quickening wears its handmade-ness on its sleeve. A ream of loose papers held together with a complex patterned variation on a Japanese stitch tells the reader that this is a personal and intimate document… The cacophony of imagery we are presented with oscillates between the manic, the incredibly dark, the gentle, the dreamlike and the intimate… Ang’s book is an exploration of photobook making, and how narrative works in the visual book form—it pushes and stretches concepts of storytelling, of showing and revealing. And finally, it’s a moment of total honesty and openness told in the only way it could have possibly been told." - Daniel Boetker-Smith for Lensculture "Work like Ang’s has such profound value for articulating hard-to-reach experiences that language often fails to capture. She entangles the viewer in the web of social and political issues surrounding the transition into motherhood that are too often ignored and overlooked... The psychoanalyst Carl Jung wrote, “only the paradox comes anywhere near to comprehending the fullness of life” – a sentiment that manifests in Ang’s book over and over again" - Gem Fletcher for Creative Review "Ang’s images are carefully composed and meticulously photographed, showing a mastery and deft use of photographic technique. She uses a wide range of tonality, lighting, contrast, and printing methods to produce different textures and moods, as well as many unexpected transitions from page to page. Many images burst at the seams with symbolism and layers of meaning, resulting in work that rewards repeat viewing and contemplation." - Andy Pham for Paper Journal "The pictures in The Quickening are a gorgeous cacophony of tender and tension-filled scenes interwoven with moments of luminosity which show how easily the lightest moments of motherhood can slip into the difficult ones (and back again). There’s a softness to the pictures, too – a dreaminess that feels like the first moments of waking up, where everything is a little blurry and sleep images linger." - Joanna Cresswell for Refinery29 "Ang’s depiction of matrescence is layered and complex. Her images blend the gentle and soft, with a strain and rawness that becomes all-consuming. Velvety skin is enveloped in warm, delicate light. But, motifs of that tenderness behind misted glass at once suggest fullness and a claustrophobic repetition. The narrative is textured and sensual; it mirrors the intensity of Ang’s lived experience." - Izabela Radwanska Zhang for the British Journal of Photography
CCCP Underground - Metro Stations of Soviet Era
When you enter subway stations in Eastern Europe and in countries that were once part of the USSR today, time seems to stand still. The stations are chronicles of the history and art of a long vanished world power. In this serie, photographer Frank Herfort presents 19 metro systems of the Soviet era from Moscow to Bucharest, from Baku to Tbilisi. Between 2014 till 2020 he captured over 2000 interior photographs of around 700 metro stations. They were conceived as prestige projects, thousands of kilometres apart and created under different conditions in different times.
野沢裕「山脈」 2023.7.15(Sat)― 8.13(Sun)
void+では野沢裕の個展、「山脈」を7月15日(土)から開催いたします。
野沢は東京造形大学の絵画専攻卒業後、東京藝術大学大学院にて絵画専攻修了し、その後スペインのマドリッドにあるIED(Istituto Europeo di Design)にて写真を学びました。野沢の作品は絵画、写真、映像、さらには自身で制作した印刷物など、様々なメディアを横断しながら日常の風景に潜む非常の風景をモチーフに作品を制作しています。日々の何気ない風景に少しユーモラスな仕掛けを重ねることで現れる小さな気づきにフォーカスを当てた作品です。
本展では作家が住む静岡の納屋から見える風景に触発された新作を発表します。
映像インスタレーションでは、中央部が切り開かれ納屋の窓枠に張られてあった画布をギャラリーに持ち込み、カーテンのように揺れ動く開口部から垣間見える山々の景色を再現します。青々と生い茂る山のシルエットをなぞるように揺れる布の映像が、空間の中でかすかに揺れる布に重ね合わされ投影されます。
また、35mmフィルムの原寸にプリントされたモノクロ写真が連なるコラージュ作品は、山の写真と納屋に掛けられたカーテンの写真が互い違いに並べられ、現実にはないイメージの稜線を作り出します。
本展は8月13日(日)までとなりますが8月11〜13日のクロージング3日間は、void+エントランス軒下にあるスペース「eaves」と駐車場において、アーティストの冨樫達彦によるアイスクリームスタンドが出店し、第8回目となるPOP-UP “ARTIST RUNNING” #8 Joel Kirkham by Goya Curtainも同時開催いたします。
皆さまこの機会にどうぞお越しくださいませ。
ーーーーーーーーーーーーー 山脈 野沢裕
朝起きると近くの川辺まで歩いていき『たからもの』だという小石を拾って帰ってくる。 数時間で宝物としての効力が消えるその小石は庭の端に集められ『たからもの』の山になっている。
連なる山々を横目に、行きは海の方向へ車を走らせ、帰りは山を目がけて帰ってくる。 家へと通じる道は1本しかない。 変わらないはずの景色が、その日だけの形に見えている。 ある時、見えている山の稜線は山のそれではなく空の稜線に見えた。車の速度でゆっくりと動くその空は緩やかな風に吹かれるカーテンに見えた。
山に向かって車を走らせていたつもりが、少し窮屈な椅子に座りながら風に揺れる麻のカーテンを眺めていた。
Tumblr media
C’è un detto che recita: se insegni qualcosa a un uomo, insegni a una persona, ma se insegni qualcosa a una donna, insegni a tutta la società.
Aïda Muluneh, fotografa e attivista etiope, utilizza l’arte come strumento sociale contribuendo a trasformare l’immagine dell’Africa nella comunità artistica internazionale.
Vincitrice dell’European Union Prize agli African Photography Encounters e del CRAF International Award of Photography, nel 2020 ha ricevuto il premio per la curatela fotografica della Royal Photographic Society.
Nata nel 1974 ad Addis Abeba, ha vissuto in Grecia, Regno Unito e Yemen prima di stabilirsi in Canada. Si è laureata in Belle Arti alla Howard University e iniziato come fotoreporter per il Washington Post, è stata fotografa di guerra per Reuters, documentando conflitti e crisi umanitarie in tutto il mondo prima di decidere di tornare in patria per dedicarsi all’arte concettuale e alla fotografia creativa come mezzo di diffusione di cultura, tradizioni e impegno sociale.
Il suo lavoro è incluso nella collezione del National Museum of African Artdi Washington, DC. Uno dei suoi pezzi è stato l’immagine principale della mostra itinerante
The Divine Comedy, Contemporary African Artists
.Ha fondato e dirige Addis Foto Fest, biennale internazionale che mira a portare la fotografia come forma d’arte al grande pubblico. Il successo della rassegna ha permesso di lanciare giovani talenti africani e mostrare fotografe e fotografi affermati a un nuovo pubblico che, per la prima volta, è entrato nelle gallerie e nelle istituzioni culturali.Il lavoro di Aïda Muluneh ha l’intento di evidenziare la capacità che hanno le immagini di influenzare la percezione delle persone e trasformare, in qualche modo, la società.
Le sue fotografie sono caratterizzate da uno stile distintivo e vibrante. Ritrae soprattutto donne e la potenza dei loro sguardi. Utilizza colori accesi, simboli culturali e composizioni audaci per trasmettere messaggi di grande impatto.
Attraverso la sua arte, cerca di rompere gli stereotipi e le percezioni limitate spesso associate all’Africa, offrendo una nuova narrazione visiva che mette in luce la complessità e diversità del continente.
Ha esposto in numerose mostre internazionali e le sue fotografie sono state pubblicate in riviste e pubblicazioni prestigiose. Utilizza la sua voce e il suo lavoro per promuovere cambiamento.
È la fondatrice di DESTA (Developing and Educating Societies Through the Arts), organizzazione che cerca di creare opportunità per gli artisti e le artiste africane della diaspora incoraggiando l’alta formazione, gli scambi culturali e  l’accesso alla tecnologia.
Patricia Piccinini
Patricia Piccinini was born in Sierra Leone and lives in Australia. Her work encompasses sculpture, photography, video and drawing and her practice examines the increasingly nebulous boundary between the artificial and the natural as it appears in contemporary culture and ideas. Her surreal drawings, hybrid animals and vehicular creatures question the way that contemporary technology and culture changes our understanding of what it means to be human and wonders at our relationships with – and responsibilities towards – that which we create. While ethics are central, her approach is ambiguous and questioning rather than moralistic and didactic.
“My practice is focused on bodies and relationships; the relationships between people and other creatures, between people and our bodies, between creatures and the environment, between the artificial and the natural. I am particularly interested in the way that the everyday realities of the world around us change these relations. Perhaps because of this, many have looked at my practice in terms of science and technology, however, for me it is just as informed by Surrealism and mythology. My work aims to shift the way that people look at the world around them and question their assumptions about the relationships they have with the world.”
Patricia Piccinini
In 2003 her exhibition We Are Family represented Australia at the 50th Venice Biennale before touring to the Hara Museum, Tokyo (JPN) and the Bendigo Art Gallery, (AUS). Tracey Emin
Tracey Emin is a highly influential and celebrated British artist whose provocative and deeply personal works have made a significant impact on the contemporary art world. She was born on July 3, 1963, in Croydon, London. Emin's artistic journey is closely intertwined with her own life experiences, and her art often serves as a raw and unfiltered expression of her emotions.
Raised in Margate, a seaside town in Kent, Emin faced a challenging upbringing marked by personal struggles, including difficult family dynamics and a turbulent adolescence. These early experiences would greatly inform her artistic practice later on.
Emin initially studied fashion at the Medway College of Design in Kent but later transitioned to fine art, graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 1989. It was during her time at the Royal College of Art that she gained attention for her daring and confessional approach to art, which challenged conventions and pushed the boundaries of acceptability.
It was all too Much, 2018 Tracey Emin Acrylic on canvas, 182.3 x 182.3 cm
One of Emin's most notable works, titled "Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995," gained significant controversy and acclaim. It consisted of a tent embroidered with the names of all the people she had ever slept with, both literally and metaphorically. This piece propelled Emin into the international art scene and established her as a leading figure in the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement of the 1990s.
Emin's art often incorporates a wide range of mediums, including installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, and photography. Through her works, she explores themes of sexuality, identity, trauma, vulnerability, and the complexities of human relationships. Her use of personal narratives and intimate details creates a deeply emotional connection with viewers, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences and emotions.
This Was The Beginning, 2020 Tracey Emin Acrylic on canvas, 182 × 214 cm
Over the years, Emin's art has been exhibited extensively in major galleries and museums worldwide. She has participated in prestigious exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and has been nominated for esteemed awards, including the Turner Prize in 1999, which solidified her status as a groundbreaking artist.
Emin's contributions to contemporary art have had a profound impact, inspiring and challenging generations of artists and viewers alike. Her unapologetic exploration of the human experience and her willingness to expose vulnerability has made her an influential and highly regarded figure in the art world.
I chose to look at Tracey Emin, specifically her larger scale paintings, because of how well it ties into examining intimacy and connection within relationships. Much of Emin's work is focused on her personal relationships with others, and has been a staple throughout her career. (I'm also unable to post some of the more overtly sexual paintings from this series or the post will be removed by Tumblr's TOS)
