Just dropped off the HermitCraft TCG cards at an international shipping depot poorly lit by flickering and failed fluorescent lights.
As I was leaving, a lady entered carrying a two-foot-tall yellow wooden obelisk, as wide as a fire hydrant, with metal-reinforcements on its edges, by its metal lantern handle screwed onto the top.
The faces of obelisk had spray-paint stenciled onto them “SHIP DRY” in large red text.
I am curious what object or material you would transport in packaging like that. Any ideas?

head's up for all my international peeps: Book Depository announced on Twitter that they're closing on 26 April 2023.
per their tweet: "You can still place orders until midday (12pm BST) on 26 April and we will continue to deliver your purchases and provide support for any order issues until 23 June 2023."
preorders for books that come out before April 26 should be okay. preorders for books that come out after that - or whose dates are pushed back by their publishers - you may want to cancel, but they do say they'll refund you if they're unable to ship your order when the day comes.
for more details, see their FAQ page about the closure
the good news is, it looks like Blackwell's (UK) now offers free international shipping. here's their shipping page for details.
hopefully this means Book Depository closing won't hit as hard as it otherwise would have. free international shipping makes books so much more accessible to so many more readers.
here's the link to Blackwell's main site

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, spoke at the UN Security Council on Wednesday regarding the Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
"The Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea are a precursor to the dark future expected for the region and the entire world if significant action is not taken against them urgently. The Ayatollah regime in Iran is the only factor that connects together all the perpetrators of destruction in the Middle East."
The discussion was initiated by the US following a series of attacks by the Houthis against ships carrying goods to the area.
"This is not an 'Israeli problem,' it is not even a 'Middle East problem.' This is a threat to the entire world. A complete closure of the Bab-el-Mandeb strait will cost the world economy 6 billion dollars every day.
Erdan: Houthis are a terrorist organization
"This council has already previously recognized the Houthis as a terrorist organization. Now is the time to impose sanctions on them and on those who finance or arm them. It is time to talk about the Shiite elephant in the room: the Ayatollah regime in Iran. They are the factor that connects and directs all the perpetrators of destruction.
Tumblr media
"Iran is hiding while it is the one pulling the strings, arms, and finances its terrorist organizations. The Houthis, terrorists who belong to one of the poorest countries in the world, would never have obtained ballistic missiles and exploding drones without Iran and would not have had the ability to locate ships without receiving intelligence from Iran in real time.
"It's time to expose this to the world and take action. This could be the moment when the Council will respond to the real threat to the Middle East."

Your friendly periodic reminder that, if you live in the US, you don't need to order Worst Journey from the UK, you can get it direct from Silver Sprocket!
And, while I'm at it, Kiwis can get it from the Antarctic Heritage Trust, and in so doing, support conservation of the historic sites and promulgation of Antarctic historical knowledge.
And Germans can get it extra large and IN GERMAN from any bookshop, but here's a link to Dussmann as an example.
If you live in none of these places, you can choose from any of the options on the constantly-updated "Where To Get It" page of worstjourney.com

This week in 1966, (May 22nd), the Labour government of Harold Wilson declared a State of Emergency, one week into a strike by UK merchant mariners. This would provide the legal power to, amongst other things, cap food prices, and allow the Royal Navy to take control of shipping in British harbours. The Prime Minister told the House of Commons that such powers would not be used unless absolutely necessary, stating, "The government must protect the vital interests of the nation. This is not action against the National Union of Seamen."
International shipping had all but ground to a halt. Around 40 million pounds worth of exports were tied up, and both freight and passenger services were paralysed. As soon as the Queen Mary arrived in Southampton from New York carrying 850 passengers, 900 crew members immediately stopped work. (It's interesting to note the passenger-crew ratio, which speaks volumes about the state of transatlantic shipping at that time).
One of the union's demands was a reduction in working hours from 56 to 40 hours per week. Minister of Labour Ray Gunter conceded that pay and general working conditions for seamen needed to be modernised, but argued that the overtime claims that would inevitably result from the change in conditions the union was demanding, would derail the government’s attempts at wage restraint and their fight against inflation.
A week later, on May 28th, the Prime Minister upped the rhetoric, alleging that Communists were using the strike to gain influence over the National Union of Seamen. He said they were "endangering the security of the industry and the economic welfare of the nation". Not all of the governing Labour Party approved of Harold Wilson's new hard-line approach, but the strike then quickly ended, following a compromise between the union and shipowners, and the government’s commitment to set up an inquiry into employment conditions for merchant mariners.

oh how i love you! I'm one of your readers and followers from the Philippines, and i badly want to buy your book, but the shipping fee is twice the amount of it so if I'm sending you an ask hoping other filo readers of yours who might want to buy as well, we can bulk buy (help a poor girl out) ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
:) sweet friend!! those tricky shipping fees! the advice I have to give as far as acquiring a copy without paying a fortune is:
Game Over Books (the publisher) occasionally has free shipping events for anyone subscribed to their mailing list, which is on their website. so I'd add your email to the list and keep an eye out for when they're having an event!
contact your local bookstores and/or libraries that you'd like to have copies of You Look Like Hell available (makes more sense for businesses to purchase bulk than just one person + helps other copies become available in your area!)
I hope this helps! I'm sending you lots of love from here. <3

Hey guys, I'm about to be ballsy and make some prints of my fanart. Just taking a mock census here to see if any of you guys are interested in purchasing them.
I have a few options for international shipping to Europe, North America and some East-Asian countries. I'm open to more, but for now just checking to see who's interested and in what.
