CAMPO “It’s a great community builder. It attracts tourists from all over the world, local gauchos and people from Montevideo to Garzón. Art brings people together.” - Heidi Lender, Photographer and Founder of ‘CAMPO’. Photographer Heidi Lender is originally from San Francisco. Lender first travelled to Uruguay twelve years ago when she took a trip to South America and found a “cute little country” between Argentina and Brazil in her guidebook. Having worked in the fashion industry as a writer and photo stylist Lender remembered covering Punta del Este and so that’s where she landed - from there she would take a ferry to Buenos Aires en route to Brazil. It was New Year’s Eve in Punta del Este and Lender hadn’t booked any accommodation. The only place with availability happened to be Francis Mallmann’s hotel in Pueblo Garzón - which had just opened. Lender had no idea that Mallmann was an internationally-famous Argentine chef - but the location was dreamy. During Lender’s three-night stay, Mallmann invited all the guests to an “asado”- a traditional barbecue in the hills. After her brief pause in Punta del Este, Lender and her companion left the tiny Uruguayan town for Brazil. Two weeks later in Rio they wondered what they were doing there. They promptly returned to Garzón and bought 33 hectares of land on the edge of town. In 2018 inspired by the solitude and beauty of Garzón, Lender founded ‘CAMPO’ a creative institute and Uruguay-US non-profit. ‘CAMPO’s’ mission is too invite artists and creative thinkers to Uruguay to connect with themselves, other like minded souls and the world. To disconnect and reconnect in the stillness that Uruguay affords them. Each December, Lender organises ‘CAMPO ArtFest'.
