With tumblr news circulating about the Skeleton Crew shift, and the eventual shut down (albeit a slow death, it could be years), I've been thinking about the lifespans of older websites that still exist today. A lot of them (in fact most) are run by community volunteers who rely on yearly fundraiser efforts, word of mouth, call to actions that bring attention to its importance... And i'm reflecting on what that all truly means in the end, and what we, as The Internet Explorers, should consider for long term. I don't think the Internet with its many sites ever promised 'long term' to start, it was always experimental, ephemeral, in the moment- and could break when the lights just couldn't stay on. But it's also important that we archive things, leave a mark on the work we've done- Memories of good times (and bad times) on sites who hold thousands upon thousands of clicks, downloads, shares, and browsing. It makes me think: What are we missing out on, and what is to come?
We're never going to be able to predict our futures as far as a websites lifespan goes, its fate lies in the hands of those who deem it 'worth it' or not. But what we CAN do, is archive our memories and revisit the past to learn FOR the future. And I think it's about time we start to prioritise making funky websites free from the hands of folks who want to profit off of our works- Create spaces dedicated to your fandoms, your muses, your recipes, your cats and dogs, you art, writing, music , and so much more.
I've been seeing more younger folks start to experiment with Neocities and that gives me hope. Or more and more folks who want to host their webcomic on Comic Fury . Hell, AO3 is a classic example of resilience in the face of constant change. Celebrate inide sites- create your own. Use RSS readers to keep up with your faves, read webcomics on their own sites. It feels bleak because we want to reach people and communities- but remember that WE are what they make. It has to start with us, and with how much the net is shifting into algorithm hyper profit based experiences, I think it's time to reflect what we truly want our browsing time to be like.

Ultimately, far-right conspiracy theorists and horny reply guys’ response to Gomas as well as the media’s despicable handling of the footage, represents a turning point in the evolution — or devolution, as the case may be — of internet culture. Not only is it no longer true that private citizens enjoy a reasonable expectation of being able to have a very bad day — in fact, maybe even the worst day of their lives — without millions of people watching that bad day happen in real time; or that their physical appearance not be meticulously scrutinized; or that they be accused of being government plants whose identities have been erased by the CIA, by boomers who are too dumb to figure out how to do a simple LinkedIn search. Not only do we seem to have come to a universal understanding that vulnerable people who behave erratically make for good content, ethics be damned, but we also seem to have come to an agreement that these people deserve to have our own twisted narratives projected onto them, even if they beg for us to do otherwise. I don’t know anything about Tiffany Gomas. I don’t know if she’s a bad person or a good person or if she had some sort of premonition or if she freaked out because she lost his AirPods or if she was unwell or took too many Ambien without going to sleep. I know absolutely nothing about her except for two things: she was a person who had a very bad day, and she was a person who wanted to be left alone. And because we weren’t willing to do the latter, she has to relive the former, over and over and over again, possibly for the rest of her life.

Hey y’all the internet keeps cutting out and I’m nearly out of data so I’ll be gone for the next few days!
I’ll check in when I can, but yeah, my plan to answer asks and tag games is uhhh not happening this weekend.
But feel free to keep sending asks and tagging me in things! When the internet comes back I’ll want things to do, and it’s my birthday next week~

15-y/o-me used to sneer at leftist users blocking an account after just one interaction or by looking at their profiles, like ""ha, how are u so triggrd that you can't even bear to see some random guy that has never interacted with u"" but, like, I 100% get it now.

Taste of the Zombie Apocalypse
So all the internet is out in the city near my home. Apparently someone cut a line or... something. I had about 8000 errands planned for the day and only managed to accomplish two of them because when the internet goes down nobody can sell you anything. I had used my meagre cash reserves on lunch so all I had were cards -- and nobody could take them.
Which made me think that maybe this cashless society wasn’t going to be the utopia everyone expected. I was trying to figure out if I could barter the cats for my prescription. 🤣

Stream of Consciousness Saturday/JJJ/Out of the Box
The new modem, just out of the box, didn’t work. Despite following all the instructions, my husband could not get our internet up and running. It took hours on the phone to finally reach assistance. End result? Our internet repairman will be out on Tuesday. I hope I have enough data to do my computer tasks until then. Some things I can do okay on my phone, but reviews (and I have 3 to do) are…

Technological Ramblings
I think I’m the only person who doesn’t own a cell phone. Thank goodness Discord doesn’t require one.
...I hope. I’m not finished reading the Terms and stuff. Just want to make sure I’m not signing away what’s left of my soul.
Also, is it or is it not illegal to create an email under a pen name instead of your legal name? I’m getting conflicting answers. I want to create another Tumblr and maybe a Twitter for fanfiction. (I’m a masochist to be considering the latter. But I’m already on there -- Under my real name, with my real location, no less -- to promote my original work. It’s just getting confusing with fanfiction mixed into it. But I don’t want to break any laws or anything.)
Yes, I’m a stickler for rules. I think it’s a trauma response. It’s exhausting.

The original post is totally correct but it's so annoying when people act like simply not knowing something is a grievous intellectual failure. Most people probably don't google the name of every store they come across to make sure it's not offensive, not because they're lazy or stupid, but because it's neither common knowledge nor common sense that such a popular store would have such a tasteless name. I doubt the OP of this post googles every single new word or phrase they hear before adopting it either!

Downloaded TikTok so I could talk with a friend whose phone broke and What the fuck its that app.
It turns off my music every single time I open it to reply to a message. Literally who does it think it is. You have no power over Spotify, you're a shitty video app sit the fuck down.
The "homepage" is just the videos??? So you open the app and inmediately get hit by shit at full volume? Also that means everytime I want to open it to reply to a message or w/e I'm bleeding internet data.
What if it turns off Spotify when I'm texting because it's actually playing a video in the background what the fuck. My worst fear when off wifi.
Can't catch a fucking break.
Also everyone was saying "oh the algorithm is so advanced just scroll and interact a bit and itll give you content you like" Well it's been about a day and I still hate everything I've seen in this app.

Disconnected
Something weird happened with our intern during a storm last night. We lost internet, but it didn’t come back right. At the moment, I can only connect with my phone. It won’t let my desktop connect. Even the tablet I use with our security camera can’t connect. It can’t even fund any networks. My daughters tell me they have the same issues. Unfortunately, the modem is in my husband’s bedroom, and…

This post comes to you from Les Schwab while I wait for my tires to be rotated because my internet is once again, you guessed it.  Not working.
Sighs, time to start doing my first drafts on paper again.  Also, does anyone have good advice for a way to write and edit documents on a chromebook including spell checking them when there is no internet?
When this device dies I am so going back to a regular laptop.
