Star Wars: The Bad Batch: “Retrieval” -  Review
Tumblr media
The Bad Batch resolves last week’s cliffhanger in a decidedly passable, self-contained mission
Still trying to recover the Marauder, The Bad Batch track their would be thief to a massive underground Ipsum mine. The operation is run by the malicious and abusive overseer, Makko, who keeps an army of droid sentries and over stretched young miners under his mechanical fist. And one of these hapless workers just so happens to be Benni Barro, the ship thief in question.
After last week’s cliffhanger, it was hard not expect that this week’s episode would deliver some explosive consequences to the team and their current status quo. Sure, Tech and Omega may be on better terms now, but their ability to work without Echo still felt unresolved and the squad’s working relationship Cid appeared to be more perilous than ever. But, these plot threads are dropped in favor of another self contained adventure episode that introduces new side characters and a villain of the week to be thwarted.
It’s hard for this reason to judge “Retrieval” on its own merits. The Bad Batch’s second season has been sorely lacking in direction or purpose for pretty much its full run now. Even if the series’ freshman outing was still plagued by plenty of forgettable episodes or underdeveloped characters, there were at all times multiple ongoing plot threads that felt like they were creeping in on the Batch. There was Crosshair’s betrayal and his determination to catch his former teammates. Nala Se’s attempts to capture Omega. The threat of the inhibitor chips inside the clones themselves. And of course the overarching story of the destruction of Kamino and the slow eradication of the clone army. Sure, there have been standout episodes and even some big in universe developments, but everything about The Bad Batch’s second season has felt stop gap and sporadic. The one ongoing story thread that the season seemed to have, Admiral Rampart’s efforts to cover up Kamino’s destruction, was barely present and resolved itself midway through the season. And sure, Rebels also had plenty of stand alone episodes, but each season featured some form of end goal, multiple ongoing narratives, and some sort of villain for us to root against. It’s hard to find any of these in The Bad Batch right now.
It’s because of this that “Retrieval” focusing on a self contained story about mistreated youth workers in an explosive mine feels so frustrating. It’s yet another week of meandering storytelling.
And maybe some of this frustration is unfairly placed. For what it is, “Retrieval” is a competent episode of television. Makko makes for an effective and believable villain. Benni is a fun episodic character who undergoes a tidy but well constructed arc. And Omega experiences another example of galactic injustice. There’s also some interesting thematic work happening here regarding the sort of despots and opportunities that rise into power in the gaps leftover by wartime. We even explore how these abusive leaders instill loyalty and enthusiasm for their underlings. In a way, it makes for a less nuanced and well executed version of the prison arc from Andor. But few elements wow. There’s no signature standout set piece. No insightful interaction or growth for our main characters. Just a solid, in and out, mission.
“Retrieval” is fine. It accomplishes its goals competently and is as slickly animated as always, but it’s hard to see how anyone comes out of this season remembering much of anything about it. The Bad Batch better start wowing soon. The last few episodes of this season have the unfortunate task of sharing a release day with Disney+’s flagship Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. And if we keep getting episodes like “Retrieval,” it’s hard to imagine anyone even bothering to glimpse at this plucky show caught in the long shadow of Baby Yoda.

euts 2!! give it up for euts 2!!
today on euts:  Everyone prepares for their first day of classes in their own ways... featuring rodent bites, a terrible car being driven terribly, a brief discussion of gender, and some functional alcoholism.
Title: everything under the sun
Chapter Title: I look quieter than I feel
Pairing: AoKaga
Rating: T
Summary: College is a strange and awkward and beautiful time no matter where you come from. For some, it’s a new beginning, for others, just a continuation of the same old struggles.
Or, Kagami has no idea what he’s getting into when he agrees to meet the rest of Kuroko’s friends.
Enjoy!

"Can I ask you guys a favor?"
"I don't know, can—?"
"Of course," Tetsuya cuts in, before Takao can finish. "What do you need?"
Takao flicks his empty salt packet at him, but Tetsuya is too concerned with the wealth of dread in Sakurai's downcast eyes to retaliate.
"Can you help me go off the grid?"
Ogiwara snorts into his soda can, and immediately recoils. " Fuck, it went up my nose, that hurt..."

Headcanons of Eren with a Black s/o!🍡
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
(Happy black history month babes! Remember blm isn't just in this month but all year long :p)
‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿
• You guys most likely met in your high school years.
• I feel as if Eren would stare a lot at you during freshman year. Not in a bad way but in a Curious/adoring way. I mean all his friends are white lmao💀
• He probably approached you during a class period you guys have together.
• I don't think he would be ignorant? But he'll most likely ask to touch your hair.
• Maybe you have braids, locs, or passion twist or your natural curls out/4c Afro—doesn't matter, he'll ask to touch your hair.
• Of course you can decline and tell him no, he won't really fuss over it. He'll even apologize.
• But trust me, he's going to keep staring 😭 he thinks you're really pretty, don't worry ;)
• He won't care about your Skintone/shade, lightskin, brownskin, dark-skinned. He likes them all, I don't see Eren ever have a preference in girls in general.
• Whoever he likes, he likes.
• You guys hit it off in your freshman year.
• He'll ask a lot of questions about you and your culture and your hair
"Hey, why do you wear braids??"
"Is your hair really this long? Wow 😁"
• PLEASE LMAO, I TAKE THESE AS AN INSULT BUT I KNOW HE'S JUST HE CURIOUS 😭
• You'll have to explain to him about your hair.
• You guys most likely snapped and he sent a streak of him getting out the shower and his hair is wet.
• You'll go on about how you can't wash your hair everyday, that you have a certain wash day and his reaction is like "😲"
• Poor baby is like "woooow" and ever since then, he's been hook up to learn about your lifestyle, your family, cookouts, etc. He just wants to know you.
• He calls you pretty a lot.
• Not in a flirtatious way just because he thinks YOURE really pretttyyyy. He's just stating the obvious queen🙄❗
• He offered to go to the Beauty supply store once or twice to buy your weave/pick out the next color. Or he'll just accompany you.
• Also would pick out your next nail color, maybe hairstyle.
• He doesn't care if you wear lakefront, wigs, braids, or natural. He believes they're all beautiful. Plus he understands that our hair need protective hairstyles and can't really, yjehehejehwhww iykyk.
• During BHM, he would do the mossstt.😭
• He'll buy you food and buy you hairproducts.
• He'll constantly post about African American stories on his social media.
• Talked Armin into making a poem about discrimination and racism then made him read out loud to you in the hallway😭
• Would buy a BLM shirts for him Mikasa and Armin.
"Look y/n! We're supporting your people. Remember we're on your side. BLM!!"
• IM CRACKLING TOO MUCH LMAOOOO.
• Don't worry, he's has the right attitude but mann💀
• Depends on the type of person you are: you probably confronted them and told them to relax. Or, you dealt with it and the embarrassment 😭
• You most likely ask him for Reparations 🙄❗🤞
• He deadass would give you them.
• He'll be confused at first and probably wouldn't  even understand the word 💀
• But he'll give you money though LMAO.
This was 15 year old Eren, moving on to when he's older.
‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿
• You guys are older. You've been introduced to the rest of his friend squad. Jean, Connie, Marco, sasha etc.
• Jean most definitely thinks you're pretty and fell for you at first sight. Eren didn't like this at all.
• Eren never really understood why he didn't like it when Jean played in your braids. Eren then started to purposely make you lay between his legs so he play with your braids before Jean could.
• They probably reacted the same as Eren about regarding your hair.
• Eren would take it upon himself to explain and even tell them about Lace fronts, sew ins, braids, etc
• He'll probably show off about  how much he knows about your hair.
• Eren would ask to help you with your hair.
• He most likely looked up YouTube videos about how to plate hair or how to deal with your hair type in general.
• You could probably teach him. He wouldn't understand the first time but with practice, he's pretty good. Not better than you though 🙄🤞❗
• Carries Hair ties, brushes and combs on him just for you.
• You also carry hair ties for him because of his long hair.
• You're the person who even puts his hair into that sexy ahh man bun🤨❗
• Most likely help you on wash day. Massages oil into your scalp.
• Supplies you with hairproducts.
• Likes it when you play in his hair. During PE, you guys would sit on the bench. Him between your thighs relaxing as you caress his hair.
• You guys look so cute and perfect while doing this. Connie and Sasha would always tease you about being Eren's gf.
• Loves your food! Like literally, he's in love with it.
• During the summertime, you invited him to a cookout. A lot of your family members stared at him but you know, they're accepting and gave him some food, chatted him with etc.
• Ever since then, he would always ask your mom to come over for dinner or save him a Plate lmao😭
• Sometimes if you were to cook, he'll be in the kitchen watching you
"Why are you watching me?"
"I wanna watch you so I can learn to cook your food and surprise you one day with it."
"Suurree but you can't out-cook me."
• He'll then smirk and accept that challenge.
‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿
Sorry I just realized I've only been talking about yall friendly part, lemme get into more intimacy 🥲
• He always have his hands on your hips, waist or ass.
• Maybe you're cuddling in the library or something, his hands are on your ass.
• Black women naturally have curvy bodies In my opinion. And curvy can mean thick, skinny or in the middle. They're still curves.
• He loves kissing your lips. Either that or your neck.
• When you're walking together he always have his hand around your waist.
• Eren seems like the type to hug you from behind and kiss the top of your head.
• I dont think he's big on PDA but that doesn't mean he won't do it.
• You're talking to Jean? Wraps his arms around your waist from behind and places his head on your shoulder- kissing your neck.
• If you so happen to have thay dump trunk in the back, he'll always caress it, give it a pat or smack it. But in the most sly way ever.
You're in the hallway, chatting up with Jean. You guys are discussing the topics of what was recently covered in class. Jean cracks a joke about how the teacher was talking and their looks. You laugh at the small insults he was throwing at your professor. Eren recently just left his class a few doors down from where you and Jean was. He notices your long box braids from down the hall and sees a tall male walking alongside with you. Eren quickly caught up with you guys. As he walked passed you, his hands slides over and grabs a good squeeze from your ass. Naturally you wouldn't mind but for some reason you got embarrassed and flustered. Most likely it was because Jean was there. Before you could respond  and complain to him, he leans over and places his lips against yours. Obviously, you kiss him back as his free hand grabs your chin, deepening the kiss. It was passionate. The kiss was probably to make up for his sudden actions but it was also because he missed your presence and touch. The way your lips felt against his own, his hands grasping and holding your hips rolled, everything. Jean rolled his eyes,
"Okay lovebirds, I get it." You break away from Eren with a small smile. You turn towards  Jean with an apologetic look, since he did just kiss you in the middle of a conversation.
Jean nodded and said his goodbyes, he'll catch up with you another. Watching as his figured faded within the crowd, you turn towards Eren and smack his arm. He let out an "ow" in response.
"Eren, what was that for? I usually don't mind it but we were chatting."
He lets out a soft groan and buries his head into your neck. He released the grip on your rear and just lays it there as his other hand slips down and does the same. You tap his back and he raises his head from it's previous position. You give him a few quick pecks, wrapping your arms around his neck, he quickly to returns the small kissed back. You both smile at one another, letting out a small giggle.
"Its okay baby, I miss you too." You peck his cheek for the last time.
"We can walk home together after school, meet me at my last period class."
Eren face brightens up when you say those words. Mann, this boy was in love. The bell rang and you notice all the kids scrambling to get to class. He releases his arms from you and grabs your hand as you both scurry along to your next period class.
He drops you off and waves at Armin and Marco that happens to be in your last period.
"Remember your promise y/n!!" He said as he walked off to the direction of his class.
You rolled your eyes jokingly and settled in to class.
‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿‿
Okay bonus:
I feel as if Eren would talk you into making those tik toks that beautiful darkskin/brownskin woman do with makeup and their cute ass hair. Of course you'll end up doing it because he kept hyping yo ass up and wouldn't let it down.
The video actually goes viral and gets a decent 345k likes with 1.1m views. Some of the kids in school  came across the video and started chatting up with you. Even some guys you never knew before started to hit you up but Eren gets so Jealous and has you hold his hands always in the halls 😭
Okay thank you loves! Please request/suggest things for him. I don't mind doing one of these for Jean, Connie, etc. Next up are my jjk men 🤨❗

Stranger Things Teacher AU
Sorry, it got long
All of the party™ are teachers at Hawkins Highschool (either they never met and became a tight squad of teachers there or the actual plot of Stranger Things, you choose)
Mike (Mr. Wheeler) is the English (I and II) and Creative Writing teacher.
He kind of dislikes English II, but it’s not that bad. He hates the grammar section but he pushes them to do as much reading and writing as possible
HE LOVES CREATIVE WRITING! His students write a short story every week to go with a prompt he gives them.
Sometimes he’ll read his students short stories/ comics he made as a kid.
The students think it was funny how Mr. Byers drew the comics and Mr. Wheeler thought of the dialouge and plot (no matter which AU you choose, WILL AND MIKE WERE ALWAYS FRIENDS)
MIKE HATES FRESHMEN
He has a water bottle on his desk that says “FRESHMAN TEARS”
The whole school hate/loves him. During one assembly he had a dance off with two girls from the dance team (he won)
Will (Mr. Byers) is the art teacher (duh)!
He doesn’t have as many students as most teachers, because he’s a fine art not many people want to take. But that just means he gets to know all of them one on one.
His favorite students call him Mr. Will or Will
He has a secret romance going on with Mr Wheeler. ☺️
His favorite students are usually seniors, and on fridays they play fun kahoot (this is modern) or free draw!
His tables are a fake marble so they can finger paint on them and then wipe it off.
He has a wall in his classroom that’s a mural that the party did (most of it is average or bad, but he doesn’t care)
He decorates the room for Halloween with his first hour class (and mr wheeler because he doesn’t have anyone first hour) and they go APESHIT
Mr. Henderson is the science teacher for juniors and seniors (freshmen remind him of his young self, so he don’t do that shit)
Even though he isn’t the coach of any sports, he is the leader/coach of the robotics club, so most students call him “Coach Henderson” for fun
Sometimes he hears students make fun of him for his teeth/voice but usually he sends them to the principal’s office. When he doesn’t he tells Coach Sinclair about it, and he always duels our special punishments
Coach Sinclair once heard a group of boys imitating Mr. Henderson, so they had to do 10 laps around the school (full sprint) and two months of detention
Dustin is super into his lessons and plans all of them out during the summer, because he genuinely loves his job. He wants to be able to answer every question that’s thrown at him, just like his old science teacher.
They have labs every other day to give students a break from notes, and he’s had at least 12 fires in his room.
Coach Sinclair is a football coach at Hawkins High, but was offered a job as World History/Civics teacher.
He hates Civics, but likes World History.
Civics is for Freshmen, and World History is for Sophmores, which he loves.
One of his students made a countdown on the whiteboard until February 4th and won’t tell the class what it means. Lucas is determined to find out.
He does, on February 4th. Turns out it was National Coach Sinclair Day, And the student brought him a cake. He teared up a bit at this, worried his students didn’t like him that much
His students give him a hard time sometimes (cause they know he isn’t qualified to teach) but they all really like him.
Lucas has the funkiest outfits at school
He always promised that for every test, the classes that have a 90% or above class average, get to see him dance
Eleven (Ms. Hopper-Byers) is the Chorus teacher!
Her students call her Ms.EHB, but sometimes Ms. Elle (yes she decided to hyphenate the name, god)
She’s really bad at quieting down the class, but usually when it doesn’t work she just uses her powers to break a light, then they all get freaked out and quiet
(Sorry repair dudes who constantly have to fix her lights)
She enjoys her class, because she sings good (not outstanding but if she started to sing you wouldn’t tell her to shut up)
Sometimes she loses her voice from having to talk too much, even though she only has to be at school for two classes.
She gets to school at lunch time so she can see the party and plan her classes.
The students think she is dating Mr. Wheeler (though she isn’t, she’s very interested in Ms. Mayfeild) because she’s caught siting on Mr. Wheeler’s desk often
There aren’t any windows in her classroom, so she likes to go on walks outside when she has spare time
She painted her classroom walls baby blue, and it boosts her mood
She’s the nicest teacher in the whole school, and after concerts she takes the class to get ice cream (on the school’s credit card of course)
Max (Ms. Mayfeild/ Coach Mayfeild/ Coach Max) is the PE teacher. She also coaches softball and soccer.
Not a whole lot of the girls like her, because she’s so loud and intense. The boys like her tho, and give her fist bumps and call her bro.
She’s a harsh teacher, but for some reason it’s one of the most popular classes
She hasn’t said she’s gay, but everyone pretty much guessed and ran with it.
Everyone wants to know which teacher she would date if she could, and she hasn’t told anyone except for her favorite student, Charlie.
Charlie never told anyone Coach Mayfeild has a crush on the Chorus teacher.
She loves her Outdoor Ed class the best, they canoe and hike and fish.
(Sometimes it reminds her of the demogorgon)
The principal is Mrs. Buckley (aka Robin. THATS RIGHT. MRS.)
Everyone loves her, and is surprised she is in charge because of her young age.
She used to be the most popular teacher in the whole school (Band/Chorus) then she became administration, then principal
Her wife Heather, is the school nurse
She competes in all the homecoming/prom assembly competitions and tries to make the school more fun for everyone
She’s not too fond of punishing students, so she leaves most of it to the Vice Principal, except for when she hears about homophobic bullying
When she goes off at a homophobic bukky at her desk, she always makes sure the picture of her wife is facing the student
Speaking of Vice, Mr. Harrington is The Vice Principal
He’s kind to all the students, giving them high fives in the hallways, but cracks down in punishments
He’s very loved, but if you hear “do you want to be sent to Mr. Harrington’s office?” You shut the fuck Up
Every day on the announcements he has a “nugget of knowledge” which is just a reminder of the rules that he never enforces, but quickly becomes a meme around the school
One week students start to notice a new ring on Steve’s fourth finger when they highfive him, and rumors fly around. No one even knew he was dating.
He never officially tells the students (it’s not their business), but they notice when he changes his last name from Harrington to Hargrove
Coach Hargrove is a baseball and football coach. He also teaches PE, and gets in fights with his little step sister.
While Coach Mayfeild does Juniors and Seniors, Coach Hargrove teaches Freshmen and Sophmores. He hates them, and they know it.
He’s a pretty rough teacher, but all the girls drool over him. He knows they do, to his embarrassment.
Everyone flips their shit when they find out the meanest teacher ever and the coolest cat in town get hitched
They start acting like clowns, at make jokes (like Billy went soft? Tsktsktsk), But no he isn’t soft, and reminded everyone that when he went right back to screaming at them to do 12 laps.
There’s two more teachers I want to introduce: Mr. and Mrs. Byers (Jonathan And Nancy)
Jonathan is in charge of yearbook staff and is a counselor. Some kids think he’s creepy, but that’s just cause they’ve never spoken to him.
He’s really nice and has a bowl of candy on his desk for the kids
He likes being part of students’ future decision making but enjoys yearbook way more.
He’s quiet and usually keeps to himself
Mrs. Byers is the Freshmen and Sophmore Mary teacher.
The students like her well enough, but not very many people’s favorite.
She likes the class to be completely silent except for group activities and the last five minutes of class.
She’s nice though and brings the birthday kids candy.
She still dresses like it’s the 80s and kids tease her for it (she doesn’t mind tho)
Sorry this got so long and gay, oops

pairing - Accountant!Jin x FBI Agent! Reader genre - smut warnings/tags - alcohol & drinking, strangers fucking, murder case mention, light spanking, cumming twice, oral sex (m. receiving), dirty talk, name calling, Jin throwing away his money summary - you and your boys had just cracked a month long murder case, and you find yourself celebrating at your local bar in which you say ‘fuck it’ and let a stranger take you home.
...
You slammed a drink, telling the waiter to bring you another as Yoongi laughed at your side. You usually never drank like this, especially not at this rate and you were honestly even surprising yourself. You did not care one bit. You had just solved a huge murder case that you had been working on for maybe the last few months, and the weight of all the files you had kept in your house was finally off your mind, so in essence, that means you were going to get wasted.
“You better slow down, Y/N before you barf over the bar.”
You groan as you punch him in his arm, throwing your badge onto the counter. “When have I ever barfed due to alcohol?”
“Our freshman year in college.” Right. You push that bile-filled night out of your mind, turning in your seat to watch Joon and Hoseok rap on the stage during karaoke. As much as they were just joking, they had really good voices and you had no idea why they wasted their talents and came to work for you under the FBI. Why the hell were you complaining? They were the best two agents under your group, and they’d be taken off your squad over your dead body. Slamming another shot, you exhale lightly and watch the crowd before a tall young man joins you at the bar. You almost didn’t notice him, but he slipped the waitress his card and told her to put your drinks on his tab. Your eyes are widened, as you snap your head in his direction.
“You didn’t have to do that,” you hummed softly, smiling. “I’m not broke.” You of course didn’t mind, and he could tell since he smiled back at you and ordered you another round.
“I know, but pretty girls like you shouldn’t have to pay for their drinks.. plus I’m whipped for a woman in uniform.” That has you laughing, cheeks red as you rolled your eyes playfully and slap his bicep softly. “Jin.” He introduces himself with charm and formality and at this point, you don’t care if he is trying to take you home. You had a thing for gentlemen.
“Oh this?” You laugh embarrassedly, your black button down shirt that’s tucked into your work pants. You were confused at first but then you remembered that you had the top few buttons down on your shirt, giving him a clear shot of your cleavage. “Yeah, I’m an agent for the FBI. I’m Y/N.” He smiles at your answer, drinking his beer slowly as you sipped on some fruity drink Yoongi recommended since you weren’t paying attention when she asked what you wanted.
“Really? I assumed cop, but an agent makes it even more sexy. What are you doing here alone?” He asks, and you move your shoulders gently, biting your lip. You’ve had boyfriends in the past, hookups even. None of them have ever been this smooth, and honestly you’re grateful. It’s always been ‘what you see is what you get’, but you’ve made an assumption that he is way more.
Before you space off too much, you decide to play coy right back, finger swirling around the rim of your drink. “Well, I usually don’t go looking for guys and hope they come to me. Being an FBI agent is tedious work.” And it was. Your last boyfriend, Taehyung, was mad cause you didn’t really have enough time for him. Sure, you felt bad but you had spent day and night working on certain cases, so your hands were tied. “Guess I’m waiting for someone to impress me?” The leg you have that’s crossed over your thigh moves slowly to rub the heel of your shoe up his leg, a curious grin playing on your lips.
“Hmm, lucky for me, no one has succeeded.” His lips say innocent, but his eyes are telling you a whole different story, maybe one that’s starting to excite your nerves. You nod in agreement, seeming to scoot closer to Jin as you sigh. “That must mean they’re either boring you, or not fucking you properly. I can do both, so take your pick.” That sentence has you panting a little harder than normal, a small sigh coming from your lips.
“I think I’ll be the judge of that.” That sentence was either life or death in your book, and thankfully Jin gave you life as he told the lady to close his tab and asked you if you wanted to order anything else. Shaking your head, he moves with a smile that could make you fall in love had he pulled the right strings tonight, before informing you he’s going to the bathroom.
“Don’t leave without me. Wanna show you a good time,” He whispers and you’re rooted to your seat. How the hell could you leave when this very well be the best night of your life. With him walking towards the restroom, you turn to Yoongi who has a grin that faintly resembles the devil.
“What?” You groan in frustration.
He laughs, shaking his head with his hands in mock surrender. “Nothing nothing! I’m proud of you, really. I don’t know when the last time you got laid was.” Punching his arm with a hiss, you flip him off in the prettiest way possible before Jin is behind you, hand on your lower back. “Call me if he’s a psycho or some Christian Grey sex freak.” You nodded in acknowledgement before holding onto Jin’s arm out of the bar. Luckily Yoongi drove you here so you didn’t have to worry about your car, but getting into Jin’s convertible was maybe the best decision you’ve made so far. Sitting on the leather seat, you thank him as he shuts the door after you before getting in on the driver side and starting the engine.
“So.. what do you do?” You ask softly, trying to make small talk as he drives towards his house.
“Well.. I work in accounting,” he laughs, giving you a side eye. “Boring, but it pays good and I enjoy what I do.” You hum in response, head tilted in thought as you think.
“No, I like it. It might sound boring, but I enjoy men who are smart.. I think it’s sexy.” Your cheeks are red as you guys pull into driveway, hearing him kill the engine before stepping out. Your heels are clicking on the ground in time with his steps, eyes on his back as you're led to his front door. Damn he has some wide shoulders. “I love the color of your house, it looks good.” You say dryly like a fucking idiot, and you’re hoping he doesn’t tell your sorry ass to go home but the moment you’re inside and the door is shut, your back is flush against the wood. His lips are on you in an instant and you barely have time to breathe before he pounces, but you were so wound up from work, you didn’t care. Your hands were in his hair, tugging gently at the raven strands in between your fingers. It’s soft like he had conditioned it five times a day, and the sounds he makes when you pull on it are heavenly. His body is up against yours, hands on your waist which is giving him the option to grind his cock into you way easier.
“Fuck,” you whine the first chance you get to breathe air, Jin giving you a break as he works on your neck. In a million years, you never thought you’d be turned on from someone dragging their tongue slowly up your neck, but your thighs were pushing together impatiently. “Eager huh?” You laughed breathlessly, his hands grabbing the flesh of your ass roughly before giving it a rough spank that has you gasping.
“The way you looked at me in that bar really did something to me,” he groaned as he hoisted your thighs up around his waist and bringing you to what you assumed would be his bedroom. “I’m usually composed while I’m in public— in general too— but I wanted to fuck you over the bar so badly, right in front of everyone’s eyes. They can watch how easily your pussy gets wet for me.” His words had your eyes rolling in the back of your head as he dropped you on the bed. The way he was talking was not something you were expecting, but fuck it was turning you on.
His gaze runs over your body as you rip your shirt off, the buttons popping out of place before his hands are on you greedily, cupping your boobs in his hands. After flinging your bra to the curb, he follows suit, kneeling in between your legs as he strips off his blazer and his dress shirt. It’s your turn to feel him up, fingernails touching the abs that lie underneath his skin. He smiles down at you, laughing as his thumb presses against your bottom lip and this might’ve been a stretch but you open your mouth and lick the pad of his thumb, eye contact locked down. He almost growls, as he watches you wet his thumb while his other hand undoes the buttons on his pants, fumbling before successfully getting them down to where his dick was now able to be seen underneath his underwear. You were trying to see how big he really was, but his thumb was keeping your head in place until he was satisfied.
“I wanna see what else your pretty little lips can take, baby girl.” He groans out before you’re scrambling onto your knees in front of him. You’re quick to pull his briefs down, eyes bulging out of your head at the sight of his cock. It’s long which has your throat screaming for mercy, but thick which makes you want him to take you right here. Either way, you stick out your tongue in a slow trial lick making it from the base to the head in one swipe. He watches you, chest heaving only a tiny bit as you take him into your mouth.
You do your absolute best, him hitting the back of your throat even though there’s still skin showing. You bob your head slowly at first, hoping you would find the strength to take him deeper but a hand on the back of your head guides you as he bucks his hips into your mouth. Your eyes screw shut in uncomfortable pain, as you look up at him with watery eyes as he grins down at you. “God, look at you,” he moans, voice cracking. His eyes aren’t even open, closed as he’s making your lips raw. “Fucking your throat seemed like— like such a good idea at the club, and it feels just like I imagined it would be.” He’s moaning loudly, and it’s making your stomach twist. You figured he was more on the quiet side but you were in for a rude awakening.
He starts to get sloppy, and you’re relaxing your tongue ready for him to cum before he pulls off your lips with a ‘pop’, eyes lidded. “Get on your knees. Wanna cum inside that tight pussy of yours.” You were fucking whipped as you struggled to kick off your own pants and underwear, assuming position as you waited for him to do something. “Such a pretty ass,” He groans, hand smacking your left cheek. “All fucking mine.” He forgets his fingers, and considering how wet you are, you were more than happy to feel the head of his cock sliding into you. You guys moan in time, your head dropping into the sheets while Jin’s hand smacks your ass one more time once he’s all the way in. You arch your back, whining at the pressure as you push back on his dick, squeezing a moan from him as well.
“God, move,” you demand, hoping he’d just rail you already but he starts out at a slow pace that makes you want to slap him in frustration. He clicks his tongue, but you’re not having it. “Fuck me already!”
He pulls out of you and slams back in with force that screws your eyes inward, a guttural moan being ripped from your lungs as you fist the sheets. “Like that?” He growls, hands on the headboard as he fucks into you, cock hitting that one spot making you cry out. “Is that what my greedy slut wants?” You’re already too fucked out to comment on the name-calling, but if anything it’s making your body heat up even more. Your hands reach around and spread your ass so he can fuck deeper inside you, and you almost want to laugh at the thought that you’re literally face down in his mattress, but your knees giving out is a more pressing issue. Your stomach is burning, the familiar feeling of an orgasm sneaking up on you, and with one smack to your clit, you’re coming on his cock.
Crying into the sheets, he laughs against your spine where he’s currently pressing kisses, fucking you through your high before you speak. “Someone is a little wound up, yeah?” He challenges, holding your hips in place as he fucks you like he hates your guts. He gets a hand fisted in your hair, pulling your head back. He props his leg up on the bed, giving him more strength to fuck your body outline into his sheets but even then you’re feel your second high as you clench on his cock. He groans in response, a slap to the ass as you cry out again. “Mm god I’m gonna cum soon, fill up your cunt.. want it dripping when I’m done.” You nod as a weak response and right before you know it, you’re coming for a second time whining into the sheets. Jin’s thrusts become erratic as he’s fucking you, and it’s not too long until you feel him releasing inside you, his moans filling the room.
“Holy fucking shit,” you whine as he pulls out of you, and flops right down on the space next to you panting. He turns your head a little, kissing your lip softly before smiling. “What?” You laugh, turning on your side.
“Nothing, it’s just… usually I’m all for soft lazy sex or sex that isn’t so rough but god Y/N, you do things to me..” He admits and you bite your lip before resting your head on his chest.
“Well, that was fucking amazing,” you stop to laugh, Jin chuckling along with you. Even his laugh is adorable. “But, if you’re interested in showing me more in the future, then I hope you’re gonna at least put your name in my phone!” You laugh and he’s rolling his eyes, tongue peeking playfully from his lips.
“Could I also use that number for a date, too?”
A smooth man indeed, and who were you to say no?

Frat Party - Jeff Wittek
Summary: You're the only member of the vlog squad in college, and considering most of them didn't attend college, you decide to take them to a party at UCLA. It goes well until Jeff notices a college boy taking advantage of you.
Word Count: 2.1K
Warnings: Sexual assault, drinking, swearing. Angry & protective Jeff but also sweet and caring Jeff.
••••••••••••••••••
"Zane! Get the fuck off my couch!!" You yelled at your already too drunk friend that was currently standing on your brand new couch. You had invited all of your friends over to your apartment for pre-drinks, because you were taking them to one of your college friends party at UCLA.
"I'm dancing! You can't stop me!" He slurred, you couldn't help but laugh at the fool. Just then, you felt a hand land on your lower back, and you turned to be met with a grinning Jeff.
"He's gonna get ya band from ever going to a UCLA party ever again." He joked as you both shared a laugh. He removed his hand from your back and put it in his pocket.
"Highly unlikely, I'm kind of a big deal there." You jokingly flipped your hair and continued to laugh. Jeff licked his lips as he smiled, and you had to hide the fact that it made you melt. You had been interested in Jeff since Todd had first introduced you all to him, but you didn't do anything about it for a couple reasons. One being that he hadn't been single for very long and it didn't seem that he was fully over his ex girlfriend yet, and the second reason being that although he flirted with you, you were pretty sure he was like that with everyone. Kind of like Todd, and you weren't sure if you wanted to risk taking a shot, or getting involved with that.
"Yeah, but you've never shown up with a car load of drunk idiots before." Jeff defended just as Zane stumbled from your couch onto your floor. You looked at Jeff and he shrugged with a smirk on his face.
"You may have a point." You raised your red solo cup up to your lips that held your tequila sunrise in it. However, it was mostly tequila, and less sunrise.
"Alright let's go, I wanna get my college party on!" Zane yelled, barely standing straight up. Everyone for some reason listened to him and gathered up their things, getting ready to go.
You all started pilling into different vehicles, a group of you were in David's car. David sat in the driver's seat, Natalie in the passengers, Todd and Scott in the very back, Jeff and Carly in the middle seats, and Zane sat in the isle. You noticed that there were no seats left and were unsure of what to do.
"Oh, um, I'll see if Heath has anymore room in his truck." You awkwardly said scratching the back on your neck. Just then, Jeff grabbed your wrist to stop you from walking away.
"You can just sit on my lap, it's only a short drive anyway." He smiled. You agreed, and sat on his lap, trying your best not to hurt him, "You can get comfortable, Y/N. You're not gonna break me." He chuckled. You nervously tucked a strand of hair behind your ear as he casually snagged his arm around your waist with his hand resting just above your ass. This was the closest you and Jeff had ever been.
Well, it was the closest you had ever been other than that one time you had almost kissed while you were both highly intoxicated. You were at the club, and you ran into each other as you were exiting the bathroom and he was heading towards it. He complimented your dance moves, with his lips inches away from yours. You felt his breath on your lips. You even thought he was leaning in, but it was quickly interrupted when Zane and Stassie rounded the corner yelling about something. The two of you never mentioned it, though.
It was a quick drive to the party and you guided your friends through the neighbourhood of frat and sorority houses as efficiently as possible. But, it was a bit difficult with Zane walking, or stumbling, at negative miles an hour.
"Zane if you don't hurry up the parties gonna be over by the time we get to the frat house." David yelled at him, facing his camera towards him and laughing.
"Shit, you're right." Zane agreed just before he started sprinting ahead of us. That quickly came to an end though, because he tripped and fell on his face. You all erupted in laughter, as Heath and Matt tried to get the intoxicated mess of a man off the ground.
When you finally got to the frat house that was hosting the party, a group of guys you knew greeted you at the doorway.
"Y/N! Nice of you to finally show up to one of my parties!" Caleb, your friend you met in freshman year, teased as he walked up and gave you a hug. He also happened to be the guy you had a friends with benefits relationship with throughout sophomore year. You just laughed before introducing him to you friends, "Are you guys the reason she doesn't come around anymore? She use to be the life of the party in freshman and sophomore year. Now we hardly ever see her."
"Well I'm sorry that I prefer to go to the club than to a dirty frat house." You teased him back. He talked to all of you for a bit more before disappearing into the sea of people.
"Is that your friend that you were particularly close with throughout your time here at UCLA?" David taunted. You had told a few of them about it when it was happening, but you now regretted ever giving away that information. You rolled your eyes at him and for the most part everyone laughed. Jeff however, got a tad tense. But, you were completely oblivious to this.
The night went on and you proceeded to get more and more shit faced. You had lost your friends at one point, but didn't panic because you found Caleb. He invited you to join him on the dance floor, and your drunkness stopped you from protesting.
While you were dancing with him, Jeff shot daggers at the two of you the entire time. He was growing more and more jealous by the second, but he knew that there was nothing he could do about it.
"You should've taken a shot when you had your chance, man." Todd told him, slapping his hand on Jeff's back. Jeff looked at him and chuckled.
"I don't know what you're talkin' about." He took a drink of his beer and Todd shook his head at him.
"The only person who can't see that you're into Y/N, is Y/N." Just as Todd was torturing Jeff about his crush some more, Jeff noticed you getting more and more uncomfortable with Caleb.
"What do ya say we try our friends with benefits thing one more time, for old time sake?" Caleb whispered in your ear as his hands slid down and grabbed your ass. Although you were extremely out of it, you knew that this wasn't what you wanted. However, the alcohol was hitting you hard, and you weren't sure what to do.
"N-no." You tried to push yourself off of Caleb, but he held a firm grasp on you.
"C'mon baby, don't you remember how fun it was?" He whispered once again. This time, he moved his arms to have a tight grip on your arm, as he made his way through the crowd with you, heading for the bedrooms. Jeff rounded up Todd and the majority of the rest of your friends and followed you.
"Caleb, no." You groaned quietly, trying to push him off of you. You had very little force, so it had no effect on him. He brought you into an unfamiliar bedroom and closed the door, locking it.
Caleb set you down on the bed, while you just looked around extremely confused, unsure of how you got where you were. You noticed Caleb taking off his shirt and pants and making his way over to you, "What're you doing?" You asked him. He started kissing down your neck, and his hands were attempting to unzip your jeans, "Stop." You tried to push him off of you, but again, it was no use.
"Don't fight it, baby." He unbuttoned your pants, just as you finally had enough focus to yell loudly.
"No! Get off!" You cried out. Just then you heard a loud bang coming from the door, and after a few attempts, Jeff bursted into the room.
"Get the fuck off her!" Jeff grabbed Caleb by the collar of his shirt, threw him against the wall, and laid a punch on him right in the nose. Caleb fell back, and Jeff quickly made his way over to you, "Hey, you okay?" He whispered, brushing your hair out of your face and wiping away a tear that had escaped from your eye.
You nodded, noticing all of your friends behind him, "Get me out of here." You whispered to him. He nodded, helping you up and making his way out of the house with his arm wrapped protectively around you.
You were all once again in David's car, and you were back in Jeff's lap. This time though, instead of being awkward, you cuddled into his chest, and he wrapped his arms around you, "I'm gonna tell David to drop us off at my house, okay? I don't want you going home by yourself tonight." Jeff whispered to you. You nodded, not being in much of a talkative mood at the moment. Jeff instructed David, and he did as he was told.
When you got up to Jeff's apartment, he was silent. You could tell that what happened at the party had effected him, and you felt extremely guilty, "I'm sorry." You told Jeff, staring at the ground and fiddling with your fingers as he slipped off his jacket. He stopped what he was doing and looked at you with confusion plastered all over his face.
"What?" He was in disbelief that you thought that anything that had happened tonight was your fault. When you didn't look at him, he walked over to you and tilted your chin up to look at him, "Y/N, you have nothing to be sorry for. That guy is nothing but a scumbag, and if I didn't already have a criminal record I would've killed him right then and there. Please, do not blame yourself. Okay?" He looked you deep in the eyes, you nodded, and he pulled you into a tight hug.
You followed Jeff into his bedroom, and he handed you one of his t-shirts, and a pair of boxers to change into. You went to the bathroom to do so, and when you came back out, he was spreading a blanket out across his couch.
When Jeff realized you were in the room, he had to quickly get over how good he thought you looked in his clothes, "You take my bed, Y/N. I'm gonna sleep on the couch." He informed you. You shook your head rapidly. There was no way you were going to kick Jeff out of his own bed after what he did for you tonight.
"No, Jeff. I can sleep on the couch." You protested, but he wasn't having it. He insisted that you take his bed, but you didn't want to. The reality was, you really didn't want to sleep in a big bed by yourself tonight. You were still overly shaken up over what happened, "Will you sleep in the bed with me?" You quietly asked him, afraid of his response.
He looked at you and stayed quiet for a few seconds before answering, "You want me to?" He was hopeful, it was like he had been wanting to for a very long time. You nodded and gave him a small smile.
"I don't want to sleep alone tonight. I'd feel a lot safer with you in there with me." You did your usually habit that you did when you were nervous and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. He smiled at you, before nodding.
"Okay, let's get to bed then." He gently took your hand in his, as you two made your way to his bedroom. At first, you were laying down with a good few inches in-between the two of you. But, you decided to take a leap of faith and turned over, sliding under his arm and laying comfortably on his chest. Jeff leaned into you more, and happily wrapped you in his arms. He kissed the top of your head, and you sighed in content.
"Goodnight Jeff, thank you so much for tonight." You whispered.
"Night, Y/N. I'd punch a stupid college pervert for you any day." He lightened the mood and you both chuckled.
"Jeff?" You looked up at him and he looked down at you. He thought you looked absolutely adorable as your big eyes looked up at him through your long eyelashes.
"Yes, Y/N?"
"Can you tell me in the morning how you feel about me so that sober me will have enough confidence to tell you I feel the same?" You asked him with a hopeful grin. A bright, toothy smile broke out onto Jeff's face as he kissed your forehead and rubbed your back.
"Absolutely."

Reid ‘Em & Weep (2020.1)
It’s been awhile since we wrote the “Reid ‘Em & Weep” column of sports nuggets and other assorted issues that are on the “Dutch Lion’s” mind. So as Nike suggests, “Just Do It!”
What’s up with those NFL Conference Championship Trophies?
Ever since the NFL merged with the AFL in 1970 to combine into one super football league, the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) have played Conference Championship games, with their winners meeting in the league championship game, known as the Super Bowl. For the first fourteen years there was no trophy for these Conference Championship games (1970-1983). Then the NFL introduced the conference championship trophies as they honored their founding heroes by creating the George S. Halas Trophy to be awarded to the NFC victor (founder of the NFL) while the AFC Champion would receive the Lamar Hunt Trophy (founder of the AFL). These original Halas Trophy and Hunt Trophy were introduced in the 1984 postseason. Therefore, the inaugural winners were the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins on their way to Super Bowl XIX (19).
The original George Halas NFC Championship Trophy
The modern George Halas Trophy
For whatever reason, after 26 seasons the NFL decided to have Tiffany & Co. redesign the trophy. These current trophies were introduced in the 2010 postseason. They remain the current trophies, as many of you saw on Sunday when the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs dominated their opponents to win their respective conferences. These trophies are hollowed out silver footballs that look like lame miniature Super Bowl Lombardi Trophies. Only these Halas and Hunt Trophies look like cheap garbage compared to the old oak wood base topped by the conference logos and sporting a design of old-fashioned players on a silver platter background. It’s a shame. The old ones were amazing. We grew up with those incredible trophies and they stood for something. The new ones look cheap and unoriginal. Hey NFL, word to the wise. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The Illinois Fighting Illini basketball team is for real!
Under Coach Brad Underwood, the Illinois basketball program is starting to turn the corner just as we suspected a couple of years ago. After years of disappointments followed by recent malaise, the Illini are really rolling as we enter the new decade. Now in his third season, Coach Underwood currently has his squad sitting in second place in the B1G conference with a 6-2 conference record and a 14-5 record overall. Illinois has now won five games in a row including Tuesday night’s huge 17 point victory at Purdue by a score of 79-62. Who wins at Purdue’s Mackey Arena? Not #11 Michigan State. They lost at Mackey by 29 points on January 12. So did defending National Champion Virginia on December 4, also by 29 points even though they were ranked #5 at the time. Nobody wins at Mackey, including Illinois every time they’ve played there since 2008. This year, Illinois has only lost two B1G games so far, at Maryland and at Michigan State. I’m really looking forward to the rematch with the Spartans on February 11. Mark that one on your calendar as it should be a crazy atmosphere at Assembly Hall, led by the Orange Krush. The House of ‘Paign will be rockin’ that night baby!
Led by sophomore Ayo Dosunmu and freshman Kofi Cockburn, this Illini team is better on defense than most years since 2006, the last really good Illinois team. The reason is because of the talent which includes some solid big men in Cockburn and fan favorite Giorgi Bezhanishvili. Don’t forget about sharpshooting Trent Frazier! Plus, a relentless style preached by Underwood has some insiders saying his practices are brutally tough, intense, and competitive. That’s what it takes if you want to be great. Currently ranked #21 in the AP Poll, this Illini team will go to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. You can book it Johnny Red Kerr!
The Australian Open
I absolutely love the Australian Open. Have I written about this before? I feel as if I’ve gone there but whatever. Let me know if this is a repeat. Anyway, there’s something about the first big tennis event of the year. It’s the first of the four tennis Grand Slams. Every Winter here in the upper Midwest, I celebrate the beautiful hot Summer of the Southern Hemisphere. Australia is a hidden gem of a country, if you will. I can’t wait to visit someday. I’ll be going in January with a trip to Melbourne for the Australian Open on my agenda. It’s a bucket list event.
The AO started in 1905 and has been held in Melbourne since 1972. As for this year’s predictions, I’ll go with Rafael Nadal, the #1 seed for the men and Simona Halep, the #4 seed for the women. Nadal has only won the Australian once, back in 2009. This tournament has been dominated by Novak Djokovic (seven-time champ) and Roger Federer (six-time champ) over the last two decades. I think Nadal will win his second Australian Open Championship this year. As for Halep, she has never won this Grand Slam event, finishing as Runner-Up in 2018. I look for her to get off the schneid down under. Tune in and enjoy the beauty of Australia while watching some incredible tennis. Plus, I really enjoy ESPN’s tennis commentators such as Chris Fowler, John McEnroe, Brad Gilbert, Mary Joe Fernandez, Pam Shriver, and the eternally young Chrissie Evert.
That’s it for now. So long and farewell!

howdy y’all! i’m jalynn, i’m twenty, i use she/her pronouns and i live in the est (east coast best coast am i right or am i right)! i’m like.....beyond excited to be in this rp with y’all and to get the ball rolling soon! i’m basically the most talkative and open book you’ll ever meet pls ask me anything i promise i’ll have an answer for u......anywho i guess this is the part where i introduce y’all to my baby...my love...my sweet summer child even though she was technically born in the winter......miss zola carter, ur resident butterfly muah
zola naomi carter | 21 y/o | the butterfly | international relations major | cultural anthropology minor
so. i would link a bio but....my app was like..10 pages long (oops) so. i’ll get around to that later aksjadhasd
first things first! zola grew up in bankhead, georgia (which is the hood in case none of y’all have ever lived around there)
so, as you can probably guess, zola grew up pretty poor, but she never minded bc she never knew any other way to live; to her, it was just life, and the hood was just home
her parents always preached to her about how amazing she was, and that she was gonna change the world, and that she deserved better than what she was born into, and since she was a kid, she really internalized those messages
so for a period of time, zola was happy, well adjusted, confident kid
(tw here for parental death)
everything changed when zola was 16; her father, who was involved in gangs and never truly stopped, was murdered. zola’s parents kept her rather sheltered from the sad realities of the hood bc they didn’t want her to feel discouraged with life, so of course, when her family was touched by this part of hood reality, zola was extremely shocked
this experience caused zola to develop anxiety and ptsd (though, she didn’t get diagnosed til much later) (also these are very common disorders that young kids from the hood suffer from and i wanted to highlight that realistically)
this situation really messed with her worldview, and her relationship to her hood now is really complicated bc she still loves her home but like. reality of it isn’t good every day
zola’s mental health sinks, and we see our little butterfly retreat into a cocoon
but college was right around the corner, and st. ettienne’s was her dream school, but her mom couldn’t afford it, and zola was a smart cookie but they don’t hand out full scholarships like that.....so both her n her mom knew the reality was just cyclical poverty despite zola’s potential, but neither of them brought it up
that is!! until zola’s (rich) aunt stepped in and decided this couldn’t happen! long story short, after a lot of arguing with zola’s mom, she got zola to move up to connecticut with her, so she could get ready for college (that her aunt offered to pay for where scholarships couldn’t)
zola experiences a lot of culture shock, which doesn’t help her mental situation bc atp it’s the summer before her senior yr of high school, and only about a year after her dad’s death
zola more than likely got bullied to an extent at this point, as well bc like........poor dark skinned black girl from the hood down south moves to this really elitist rich area in connecticut...it only makes sense
basically before her freshman year of college, zola decided to go to therapy bc she was just sick of feeling sad an anxious and icky all the time! and she did some soul searching (longish story) and got back in touch with baby zola who believed she was the one who was gonna save the world and give her hood a good name
so fast forward to now, she’s a senior and still goes to therapy frequently bc anxiety and ptsd are just things she’ll always have to deal with (and more often these days bc the murder of daisey is really messin with her head since daisey was her roommate)
but even though senior zola is light years ahead of freshman zola in terms of mental health and confidence, she’s still got a long way to go! but she’s workin on it!
also her relationship to money is still kinda shaky.....she’s so used to not having any that sometimes if she’s feeling stressed in any way or bored...she’s gonna drop big dollars on some clothes she LOVES fashion now that she can afford the luxury of it and it’s literally her biggest vice (impulse shopper, but she doesn’t think so...she’ll see in a few more therapy sessions)
also.....savior complex....she’s got one.......again she thinks that her need to save the world is completely unrelated to her trauma but boy does she have a big storm coming
also the imposter syndrome kicks in hard with this one sometimes.....she knows she deserves to be here as much as anyone else but like...all it takes is one lil thing to go wrong before she’s thinkin about dropping out and giving her spot to someone else she thinks deserves it more
but really. anxious, sensitive, and paranoid as she may be, zola’s got a heart of absolute gold
anyways...i’m making this kinda long so imma just sum up her personality now ajkhdkjdhaljdha
+(positives) ambitious, empathetic, intrinsically motivated, dedicated
-(negatives) insecure, savior complex, paranoid, kinda impulsive
now ig it’s wanted connection time! here goes:
now for the most part, i’m literally up for any and every single thing! so if u have any ideas just hit me with ‘em all! but off the top of my head ig it’d be cool to see: - her cousin? idk if this is possible atm bc idk if there are any other black characters around, but i think it’d be cool if her aunt is one of ur muse’s mom! - any type of love/romantic interest would be fun (plus i’ve literally never plotted one before??)  - zola’s model un team captain so ig a co-captain or members would be fun! she’s also a writer for the campus newspaper, and in book club so there’s that - any and every type of friendship....she’s already frenemies with the princess and super cool with the alpha, but i’m down for any and every type of friendship please give me that...study buddies, lunch friends, a whole squad i love it all - also maybe former bullies? former friends? whatever u feel - idk like i said. i’m down for EVERYTHING just lemme know....anyways this is getting long so imma wrap this up and actually finish this blog

Let’s Try This Again
August 21, 2017 12:47pm
The dampness of the air lingered on every blade of perfectly shorn grass. The mud and chalk melded into a homelike aroma, welcoming JJ back, as she strolled from her car in flipflops and oversized sunglasses. She wrinkled her nose; those boys were going to be a smelly mess in this heat. As she crossed the football field, she spotted him taking shots at the goal, bouncing the balls at all angles and doing bicycle kicks and generally goofing around. He was in his element, his grin wide across his features, which was understandable; he still believed himself alone.
JJ burst into a comical round of applause as he hit the turf hard, after an overly ambitious kick forced him into something resembling a snowboarding move.
“Need a hand?” JJ peered down as he lay with his chest heaving.
“Nah, I’m good. The grass will bury me by next week.” Luke Alvez waved off her outstretched hand. “What are you doing here Jareau?”
“Had to make sure my boys were on their best behavior,” She kneeled beside him, now lounging on his side.
“So, you’re not checking up on me?” Luke teased, balancing his forearms on his knees, unable to settle the excitement within himself. “Cuz I’d say you have enough to worry about right now.” She leaned back, rubbing her perfect baby belly affectionately. “What’s the countdown to now?”
“29 days, but who’s counting?” JJ glanced down her nose. “Come on, humor me with some drills. I need to move.”
“Whatever you say, boss.” Luke rolled a nearby ball her way before dramatically flipping back upright.
That’s how the students found them, their new coach playing goalie as their overly pregnant coach kept him dodging for every corner of the box with her pristine aim. The upperclassmen suffered through tryouts before school began each year as their games started the second week of September, freshmen rarely made starter squad anyhow. If the boys wanted to learn something about grit, these were the best teachers they could have asked for. Not that teenagers ask for things so freely given.
Friday September 1 10:32am
It was as if no time had passed, they filed into the Delaney Owens Memorial Library with casual conversation spilling over the meeting’s set start time. The faculty of the Frederick Buchanan Institute gathered for their annual staff pop-wow. Penelope Garcia sat straight backed at Headmaster Hotchner’s left as her boyfriend and football coach, Derek Morgan leaned casually beside her, making small talk with veteran math teacher, Jordan Todd.
“Alright, everyone, let’s make it official. Welcome to the new school year, for those of you unable to attend our little development weekend in July, we have two new staff members this Fall.” Hotch gestured to the middle of the table to his right. “Luke? Would you like to introduce yourself?”
Luke nodded and held up his hand in a short wave, “Luke Alvez, your new Foreign Language teacher and interim soccer coach. Originally from the Bronx, played professionally after college and have been teaching in California and most recently the Carolinas for eight years.”
“Thanks, alright, now the other new face. Matt?” Hotch looked to the far end of the table, the statuesque Asian man smiled slyly with only one cheek.
“I’m Matt Simmons. I’m filling in for Coach Jareau’s classes while she is on leave. I am currently taking a leave of absence, myself, as foreign correspondent for Al Jazeera, but before that I was on the D.C. political scene.”
“Oh, the girls are going to eat you boys up!” Mrs. Todd teased the pair of attractive new teachers.
“Jordan.” Hotch chuckled.
“Oh, who am I kidding, this day and age, everyone is going to love you.” She sighed, spinning back to the headmaster in her seat.
“Right, anyway, welcome, to you both. Penelope?” Hotch kept the meeting succinct.
Ms. Garcia squealed quietly as she spun to address the whole faculty. “Friends, teachers, countrymeh- peoples. Hi!” The meeting continued, Penelope and Hotch covering the new schedules and upcoming events. Something in the air felt more relaxed than years past, as if the summer had yet to release the staff of her transfixing spell. They made their way to the cafeteria, Chef David Rossi’s delights tantalizing their noses from halls away.
“I’ve got to be honest, I am surprised Jareau didn’t make it today,” Luke confided to Emily and Hotch.
“I was surprised I got her to stay home,” Emily deadpanned. “I’m sorry about tryouts, she really doesn’t listen to reason.”
“No, it was fine. Besides, kept the guys on their toes, her shooting past me even with that big belly.” Luke smirked, Hotch sighed as Emily’s face fell.
“She was playing?!”
“What?” Luke froze. “Uh, no, not really.” His face a mask of fear and inability to lie. They had arrived to find their meals waiting. Two tables set equally for seven, saving Luke from the awkward explanation, he quickly followed Spencer, who was chatting with Alex and Stephen animatedly.
“Smooth, Alvez.” Derek patted him on the shoulder as Emily stepped passed them, anxiously checking her phone. Matt Simmons was the last one to join his coworkers, Rossi had already served everyone and had sat himself between Kate and Tara. This left the last free seat next to Alex Blake. He slipped between the Drama and Debate teacher and the ever-bubbly Guidance Counselor. “Ladies, how are we doing this afternoon?”
Alex didn’t respond but held his curious gaze as Penelope began excitedly chippering away to his right.
Tuesday Sept. 5 10am
The summer heat hadn’t relented for two weeks, leaving the players exhausted and desperate after only an hour of running drills. The linemen had the field while the quarterbacks and wide receivers were working through their flexibility drills inside. May Howard never wanted to tackle her own teammates as badly as when they were able to walk back into the airconditioned school.
“Submariners! Positions!” Coach Morgan barked from his perch on the sled. “That means you too, Turner!”
Lucas filled in beside May as their hands and heads fell into line across the turf. Their lungs strained as they waited for the starting whistle. Their coach eyed them, leaving the moment lingering; training their reflexes as much as trying their patience. Then the blast, a jolt of force pushed the large metal framework.
“Don’t stop, get it,” Derek pushed his team. “You go until the play ends. You go until their line breaks and then you take them down!”
May hated being shorter than the guys in moments like this, her legs crossing twice as many steps to keep up with theirs. Lucas laughed as the Coach drew out his ending whistle. Their bodies burning hotter than the midday sun.
“Shower up. We hit the playbook tomorrow. Hard.”
12:57pm
Azalene Curtis could not believe this is where they had been enrolled for the new school year. The place was a freaking castle, she gawked out of the driver’s side as pulled up to the parking lot nearest the Rothschild Auditorium. Her little brother, Jackson, was running late for Freshman Orientation and of course she had to be the one to drop him off. Her hair was braided and wrapped around her head to keep its weight back and off her neck. She helped her brother out of his side of the car and walked him to the doors that had been propped open.
“Lena, you can go now.” Jackson grunted, his elbow crutches easily maneuvered over the lip of the door frame.
“Are you sure? This is an old building, make sure you ask for help if there are too many stairs.” She always worried he would be too pig-headed and miss a class, something their parents tended to ignore when it did happen.
“Are you going to be like this all year?”
“What? Looking out for you? Hell yeah, high school is vicious.”
“You said the same thing about middle school.”
“And I was right, wasn’t I?”
“Whatever, loser, see you later.”
“Have fun, Jax!” Lena turned to descend the slightly inclined walking path. A sleek red convertible came to a screeching halt at the sidewalk. A tiny Hispanic girl nearly jumped from the passenger’s seat as her older brother called from the driver’s side.
“Don’t be rude, Rita. It looks bad on all of us!” Ignacio Cruz reprimanded his freshman sister.
“Go to Hell, Iggy. I’m only rude when you make me late!” And she ran past the Curtis siblings as if they weren’t even there.
Wed. Sept. 6  7:31am
“Good morning everybody. My name is Matt Simmons and I will be filling in for Coach Jareau this fall. I know formality is expected here, but I believe in mutual respect. If you can act in an appropriate manner, you get to call me by my first name.” He stood at the front of his first hour Journalism class in a fresh gray button down matched with a black and white paisley tie. He read the crowd easily, from the overly attentive girl in the front row to the completely disinterested guys in the back.
“You’re actually the Matt Simmons.” Sacha Kane took a quick picture of him. “Best first day of school. Ever.” She read her caption to her Instagram post barely beneath her breath.
“Guys? No pictures, this is a classroom.” Matt sighed. “For those of you who don’t know me, I am a reporter with Al Jazeera. I have a bachelor’s degree from NYU and a master’s from GW.”
“You’re also Hannah’s uncle.” Iggy Cruz added from his perch in the last row, attempting to bring the new teacher down a peg.
“That is correct, Hannah Chang is my sister’s daughter.” Matt smiled easily, arrogant senior guys weren’t really that intimidating after reporting in conflict zones for the past ten years. “And your father is on the Board of Regents and Maya here is Mr. Walker’s daughter. It’s really cozy here at F.B.I., isn’t it?”
“We’re all about getting cozy, handsome.” Sacha leaned back, biting her lip.
“Ms. Kane?” Mr. Simmons raised his eyebrows. “Are we going to have a problem?”
She rolled her eyes and sat up straight, his voice switched from sultry to commanding in an instant. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting from his first day teaching, but this certainly hadn’t been it. Mr. Simmons turned down the lights and began his opening presentation. He left the class with reading assignments and to bring in a print media example of a current events opinion piece for the next day.
“Way to piss off the new teacher, Sacha. Since when do we have homework on the first day?” Jake sassed down at his flirtatious classmate on the way to his second period.
“Jakey, come on. He had that ready before I even snapped a pic.” She grinned confidently. “This semester is going to get me past ten thousand followers.”
10:36am
Luke Alvez’s throat hurt from talking during his morning classes. He started the semester with simple conversations, introductions and asking about the students. Second period was the beginners, but most of the teens had some knowledge of the language as their household staff or nannies may have spoken it around them. There was only one crack about tequila or cerveza, which he chalked up as a win. Now that he was done with his long stretch of classes, he realized how early in the day it was to have lunch.
“I feel like I just had breakfast.” Luke admitted as he grabbed his plate from the cart that Rossi had wheeled in to the staff dining hall, before ducking back to the cafeteria.
“You’re telling me, man. But if you don’t eat now, you’re going to regret it.” Derek shared from experience.
“How’s your first day going, teach?” Kate teased as she dug into her perfectly prepared meal.
“Pretty good, all things considered. I guess Penelope was teaching them at the end of last semester, so I can’t really win any popularity contests.”
“Yeah, don’t sweat it, man. My girl has these kids by the heartstrings and their parents by their wallets, but she was not meant to be teaching. Trust me.” Derek Morgan chuckled.
“We’re just glad you’re here now. Let the craziness of last year be left in the past.” Tara added in her comforting voice.
“Funny the history teacher is talking about leaving things in the past,” Alvez chided.
“Oh, watch out, he’s got the comeback.” Derek egged his coworkers on.
They continued like that up until the bell rattled them back to reality. The easy banter hinting that perhaps this team was going to work out while past line ups had left people slipping between the cracks.
3:42pm
Spencer had been to the principal’s office numerous times over his academic career. Usually as the victim of some sort of bullying, the bruises hidden beneath his oversized clothing. Once it was because he had explained something during a biology lesson and his lab partner thought he was sexually harassing her. And another had been because his history teacher deemed him a distraction to other students and he had to remain in the principal’s office for the remainder of the quarter during that class period. The principal promptly retired the following summer.
These experiences were racing through his thoughts as he knocked on Hotch’s office door after the first day of the new school year. Clammy hands betraying his nerves.
“Come in,” the headmaster’s voice genial. “Reid? Everything okay?”
“You tell me,” Spencer didn’t sit but stood with one hand in his pocket to hide the tension it held. “I have fewer classes on my schedule this year and you gave Sociology to a glorified cameraman.”
“Matt Simmons has an undergraduate degree in Sociology, Reid. He is more than qualified to teach an introductory class on it.”
“As do I. In addition to my three doctorates in other fields.”
Hotch eyed the younger man. “Reid! What is this really about?”
“Do you think I can’t handle the course load? Did I somehow lower the standards with a full schedule?”
“Last year I lost two qualified educators, one to a personal vendetta of a student and one to trauma from the hands of another student. I cannot put my faculty at risk of burn out or exhaustion when the very people we are charged with nurturing could, rather poetically, bite the hand that feeds them.”
“This isn’t about my curriculum?”
“No.”
“Or my attempt at a stargazing club?”
“Not at all, though that really was just asking for kids to sneak off and neck.”
“Neck?” Spencer rubbed his absentmindedly, not getting the reference.
“Spencer,” Hotch leaned on his desk top, signaling the science teacher to sit as well. “I purposely gave you a prep period this year. I don’t want you to work yourself sick. We need to all be on our A game. That means accepting a break, even if we think we’re invincible.”
Spencer’s lips curled into a blushing smirk. “Clever word choice, Hotch. Invincible is late Middle English but has Latinate roots; ‘in’ and ‘vincibilis’ respectably.”
“Reid.”
“Sir?”
“I asked a lot of you, and even more so of Penelope, last term. This is my way of trying to remedy that.”
“Oh.” Spencer caught on. “Well, it was my pleasure. Besides, I kind of owed it to her, too.”
“No, you didn’t, but that’s what makes you a great teacher, Reid. You care so deeply, you take on the burdens of other’s growth. Just make sure you’re taking care of yourself too, yeah?”
“Yeah, okay.”
Friday Sept 8 6:12pm
Maya Walker scrambled through loading the dishwasher, causing both her parents to glance between themselves. She had three different chapters to read, a dozen geometry problems to proof out and a trumpet solo to prepare for seating auditions next week. The pressure was starting to sink in. She gave up snapping Meg Callahan and just called her on speaker.
“This is only the first week of the next four years of my life and I am DROWNING, girl.”
“Hey, Maya.” Meg’s voice sounded overly cheerful.
“Did you just answer the phone at the dinner table? Nu-uh, Kate is going to kill you!”
“Rough week? That sucks,” The line became muffled as Meg clearly played on her aunt’s sympathies to get excused early from the family meal. “Okay, I have ten, twelve minutes tops before she is going to call your mom and check on you.”
“You didn’t have to answer, dork!”
“I couldn’t stand it! Chris was doing light saber noises while trying to convince Kit to eat his Brussel sprouts. They’re Brussel sprouts! It is physically impossible to like them until you’re at least twenty-five!”
“Preach!” Maya filled in. “But seriously, I am dying. Do you have homework? Maybe we can hit the bookstore tomorrow or Sunday. I am going to lose it if I am stuck in my room all weekend.”
“It’s the first week of school, I have like one page of Algebra homework.”
“Which could take hours.”
“Mrrrrrrp. Nope, sorry. I can’t draw it out that long.”
“Please? Because you value me as a friend and person?”
“Maya Walker, don’t go begging now!” Meg cackled. “But seriously, I am sorry you have so much work. And I am slightly terrified for next year. Hey, you said you signed up for Journalism, right?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Is Mr. Simmons as hot as Kate is saying he is?”
“Whoa, go Kate!” Maya cheered on the nurse’s taste. “Yes, he is built like a Greek god, with all the ageless beauty of his Asian roots.”
“Ugh, I wish my teachers were hot.”
“Dude!”
“Okay, well, like, not our parents, obviously.”
“I should hope so!” Mara shuddered. “But seriously, Journalism is first hour, he already knows my name and who I am. It’s going to be a long year.”
“Still a great view to wake up for every morning.”
“Whatever, traitor. So no study sesh this weekend?”
“Nah, sorry. I am babysitting and then we have something on Sunday.”
“You owe me!”
“Yeah, yeah, well I better scram. Hugs!”
“Thanks, Meg. Talk later.”
“Yep.”
Maya hung up the phone and fell dramatically into the mound of quilts atop her bed. She was procrastinating, but something about two days and four assignments felt daunting. After twenty minutes on her favorite puzzle game, she gave in. She got out her trumpet and got to work.

Musings on Microsoft & Bethesda’s E3 Showcases
Tumblr media
It was great!!
So Microsoft came out the gate at E3 with Halo Infinite and it looks like Master Chief is back and its exciting to see what they will do with what looks like an open world to explore from the trailer shown this evening.
Tumblr media
Capcom is back with director Hideaki Itsuno to show off Devil May Cry 5.
While we didn’t get any news as to when we’ll get it, its nice to see that it is in the works and that it looks like the OG Dante is back baby!!
Tumblr media
So WE FINALLY HAVE A RELEASE DATE!! January 29th, 2019!!
Don't get me wrong, I'm so very impressed with what they are doing. They have me second guessing my choice to buy a Switch over the XBOXOne last summer. Something that did stick out to me though was the fact that Kingdom Hearts 3 is no longer a PlayStation exclusive. Dont get me wrong I think its cool that they are trying to expand the fandom reach, but at the same time, are/have they released the other back games to catch the who have always played on Xbox up, or are they just expected to watch gameplay from KH 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8.
Dying Light 2 - Techland
youtube
As someone who highly anticipated and lusted after Dying Light my freshman year in college, long before I knew I would get a PS4 to even play the game, my friend’s were hyping me up to play the game with them if any of them got a PS4, as the only horror junkie in the group. The parkour elements are back as well as a word chaos system, which gives me huge Dishonored vibes. The zombies/infected are back and it seems like the situation has gotten worst for the survivors with new factions/gangs trying to take control over various key resources (they specifically talked about water during the showcase). Not sure if it still takes place in Harran or if we’ve moved somewhere else. Hope to hear more about it in the future.
Forza Horizon 4
youtube
While I’m not crazy about racing/car games, but I will say that the introduction of seasons as a changing gameplay mechanic as well as the seamless ability to join co-op with any of the players currently on the server. It now takes place in the UK countryside and it looks gorgeous. Still not my cup of tea, but look really cool and pretty.
Gears (of War) 5
Tumblr media
Well Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad is back with a new gritty adventure. I didn’t get a chance to play Gears of War 4 but it seems like their character arcs back to where the Locust outbreak first started maybe and new information on Kait Diaz’s connection to the Horde through her grandmother’s necklace and paranoia coming to a head!
Captain Spirit
Tumblr media
Square Enix debuted a new game within the same universe as Life is Strange called Captain Spirit. Looks like the player will be put into control of a young boy with his own family problems and own set of unique powers as we explore his progress through the story.
Tumblr media

Elder Scrolls Legends & Elder Scrolls Online
Tumblr media
Christian Van Hoose walked out on stage and announced that the Elder Scrolls Legends (card game) would be overhauled and released on Switch, Xboxone, and Playstation.

Currently on the Playstation Store in a Collection Bundle at the most for 79.99, which includes, “...the base game, Morrowind Chapter, Summerset Chapter, and four DLC game packs.” and at the least for 19.99, which includes the base game and the Morrowind Chapter.

Wolfenstein II The New Colossus & Wolfenstein: Youngblood
youtube
It was announced that Wolfenstein II The New Colossus would be arriving on the Switch on June 29th and it was announced that there would be a new installment of the Wolfenstien franchise, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which would focus on BJ’s twin daughters set in the 1980′s. Coming in 2019. Also Wolfenstein 2 in Vr, if you’re into that.
Fallout 76
youtube
The moment everyone had been waiting for, Todd Howard, man has jokes for days apparently, formally introduced the world to Fallout 76 which is a prequel to the other Fallout games. Publicized as being 4x times the size of Fallout 4, the game takes place in the hills of West Virginia. As the story goes, Vault 76 was the first vault to be built by Vault Tech for America’s 300th birthday and the first to be opened to begin rebuilding the wasteland. For this game, Bethesda is employing a new way of rendering, lighting, and detailing the world. Along with the familiar creatures from the wasteland, new creatures, based in folklore from the West Virginia area will be added into the Fallout universe. Howard introduced the new element that this Fallout would have co-op multiplayer along with the standard single player experience.  The settlement system has been changed so that players can build anywhere they would like to on the map, as well as have the choice to pick up their settlement (whole) and move it to a different location. Oh yea photo mode. Howard described it as, “softcore survival.” I assume you can do it on your own but made easier with friends.
Expected Release November 14th, 2018
Elder Scrolls Blades
Expected mobile game, with console graphics, character creator, and portrait mode accessibility. Three modes, Abyss - a never ending dungeon, Arena - where you will face other players, Town - a settlement system with a story involved. Will be available on Android and Apple, as well as PC, Consoles, with VR compatibility some time during the Fall. ITS FREE and LOOKS GOOD! treat yourself to free game fam :)
The Future of Bethesda
Announced at the end of the showcase were two new franchises for the next generation of consoles, Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI.

Hey so since school is starting up again and a lot of people I know are going to college for the first time, I wanted to compile some advice/info I’ve learned from my first year. There are a lot of tips about general things but I haven’t seen much about how college can really deal a blow to confidence, social skills, and mental health. Some of the stuff is under the cut since this got long.
Loneliness is pretty common in college. It doesn't seem like that because everyone keeps a facade up for social media to make it look like they're constantly having a good time with friends. It's easy to think that maybe you're missing out on something, or something's wrong with you if you aren't having a blast and going out on weekends with a big group of happy friends--after all, that's what all your facebook friends are doing right? In reality, what you see on social media is just the highlights of people's lives; you're not seeing any of their lows or stressful times. You aren't alone if you feel lonely or stressed because you aren't living a perfect social life.
Chances are, you're not going to find a close group of friends immediately. In fact, it might take a while to establish a solid friendgroup--don't expect that you're going to find a ride or die/tight-knit "squad" right off the bat.
Sometimes you won't even form a friend group by the end of freshman year and that's ok. It's hard to make friends when you're placed in an unfamiliar situation surrounded by people who are suddenly very different from you (esp. if you don't stay local or school demographics are very different from high school); but don't lose hope. There's at least one or two people at your college/uni who will get along really well with you and become good, if not close friends. For some it may not take long to find them, but for me it took 4.5 months before I found someone other than my roommate I could really feel comfortable with and whose company I enjoyed.
As tempting as it might sound to spend the entire weekend chilling in your dorm/room, it can be really helpful to go out, even to a cafe, library, or any place with people. I'm an introvert who enjoys her own company but I started feeling like shit after a few weeks of not getting enough exposure to other people. You need social interaction at some point to survive.
If you find yourself thinking "I have no real friends" (which to be honest, might happen at some point), think about any people you've met who have been genuinely warm and welcoming to you. Even if it's a professor, that cashier at the cafeteria, a library worker, your major advisor, the lady working in the career center. Reach out to them and ask if they want to grab lunch or coffee together. It's so, so tempting to wallow in self-pity and quit trying to befriend people but you can't give up. If someone's reached out to you before and you declined their invitation, now's the time to take them up on that offer. There are people who/will care about you, but like any relationship, you have to try too. When I was feeling my peak suicidal (and spent a day crying in my room reading reddit threads about how lonely someone was in college), I messaged a hallmate asking to eat lunch together the next day. Lunch was a little awkward since it was a big group at a circular table, but that's how I met my closest friend on campus (we send pics and videos of cats to each other on discord regularly).
Try to find a relative routine that works for you. For me, I figured one out by spring quarter: go to morning class, spend half an hour eating breakfast and getting some work done in the cafeteria/student center, go back to my room, get lunch and work at the cafeteria/chat with my friend, go to afternoon class, head to Starbucks or back to the dorm for the rest of the day. Social interaction tires me out so just that little exposure to people in the cafeteria/briefly chatting with my friend kept me going for the day.
Exercise is important, whether you like it or not. Wearing down your physical health doesn't help if you're not in a good mental place, so try to utilize your campus gym if there is one. If gyms are intimidating, you can go later at night when there are fewer people, or do some situps/pushups/squats/jumping jacks in your room. Getting your blood moving a little can go a long way in making you feel less shitty. Diet also goes hand in hand with this--if all you’re consuming is coffee and instant ramen, you’re gonna feel worse. At the very least, if you can, take some baby steps: get your hands on an easy-to-open can of corn, cereal, frozen edamame, grapes, baby carrots, nuts, beef jerky, applesauce. It’s better than chips and ice cream.
Most college tips recommend joining a club or two, and I definitely agree. Club participation can REALLY help in giving you some purpose/responsibility (esp. if you're an officer) and a network of acquaintances, if not friends. However, sometimes going to club meetings can actually make you feel worse than if you hadn't gone at all. During my first week I went to a joint club event with my roommate and all the people I struck up conversations with were obviously not interested in doing any more than small talk (they went back to talking to someone they deemed more interesting). It's not a guaranteed, but be aware that stuff like this can happen, even in the classroom. Some people won't be interested in you because they're looking for certain kinds of people and that's ok. They probably aren't worth your time either. You can't entirely give up introducing yourself to strangers though because 1 out of those 15 or even 30 people is going to be a pretty good friend, or at least someone you like/who likes you.
This doesn't work for everyone, but reaching out for professional help can really help. It took me a good 2-3 months to bring myself to call the campus counseling services for an appointment, (I hate phone calls with my life) but I can't stress how much talking to a person face-to-face about my feelings helped relieve a burden. Even if it's just a peer, I find talking to someone irl about how you're feeling more beneficial than only chatting or tweeting online. Bottling up your emotions can be so detrimental.
Even if you like your major, taking a class outside of it/within your interests can help so much in keeping you sane. Plus, it can help you meet different kinds of people with different experiences from you and broaden your perspective on things. I took an art class that helped me unwind twice a week and I met a handful of my current good friends from it since we bonded over similar interests.
Homesickness is going to happen. And it's gonna hit harder than you might expect, but you can and will make it through it. If you had a close friend in high school, call them or videocall with them instead of only texting or messaging. Even videocalling a close mutual works too, or family members if you miss them. Talking "in person" with someone important to you can help so much.
The main takeaway is this: different aspects of college aren't going to meet your expectations, especially if you're like me and spent 6 years idealizing college and the ~freedom and thrills~ it would bring. Optimism is crucial in life, but know that not everything is going to go as you might want.

Lucy Quinn Fabray | April 30 | 26 | Dallas, TX | Guitar for The Sirens | Santana Lopez

♫ I used to hold my freak back ♫
Lucy Quinn Fabray was born to a life of which most people could only dream. The Fabray family was, after all, rich and beautiful. Her dad, Russell, was a partner of a major law firm in Dallas, Texas, and his wife, Judy, was the most beautiful woman in their country club, which was saying something. Of course, Lucy knew from a young age that their marriage was far from the picture perfect ideal they showed the rest of the world, but she also knew not to say that. The world didn’t need to know that Judy drank or that Russell worked mysteriously late hours some nights. It just wasn’t what good, Christian people like her family talked about. Ever.
Oh, and there was one more member of her family: her older sister Frannie.
Frannie...well, Frannie was nice, really, even if she initially resented Lucy for ruining her only child status. And Lucy has always loved her sister, but it was hard growing up as the younger Fabray. Everything Lucy did, Frannie did first, and due to the age difference, she was doing even more important things than her baby sister. When Lucy got straight check pluses in kindergarten, Frannie got elected president of her class. When Lucy had her first school dance in fifth grade, Frannie won Prom Queen. The only thing she ever got to do that Frannie did was band. Her school made everyone play an instrument or sing in fifth grade, a policy they started after Frannie had left. Lucy took a liking to it rather quickly and became fascinated by making music. She easily made first chair, but her parents weren’t really amazed by it, especially not with Frannie getting her Ivy League acceptances. It was a relief when Lucy started middle school and Frannie went to college (Harvard, of course), since at least she wouldn’t constantly be overshadowed.
The other thing that made being Frannie’s little sister hard was that she was...well, Lucy. While Frannie grew up slim and svelte and with naturally blonde hair, puberty turned Lucy into a brunette, chubby, glasses-wearing, awkward loser. At school, everyone called her “Lucy Caboosey” and she was constantly picked on. It made her develop a thick outer skin and made her start spending more time alone. She spent most of her free time playing her flute and reading books.
Eventually, Judy made Lucy sign up for dance classes and put her on a diet, since it seemed even a growth spurt didn’t help her lose weight. And somehow, that actually started to work. And as Lucy’s body trimmed down - and as she, frankly, got a bit obsessed with lowering that number on the scale - some of the teasing stopped. And for the first time, Lucy felt like she could actually be like the rest of her family. So after sixth grade, she started bleaching her hair and got contacts, and for her thirteenth birthday the next year, she begged and pleaded until her dad took her to a plastic surgeon and gave her a nose job. In eighth grade, she finally found the right medication to clear her skin. And for high school, Lucy got to transfer to a new school district and managed to convince her family, including her cousin Kitty Wilde, to call her by her middle name, Quinn.
The transformation was completed.
Quinn, of course, was totally different from Lucy at that point. Quinn still got straight As, of course, and still had parents who fought all the time, but she quit band and, instead, was the only freshman on the varsity cheerleading team. She was a Homecoming Princess, a member of the services club, and the founding member and president of the Celibacy Club. Quinn Fabray, after years of taunts and jeers thrown her way, was now the person throwing them, and Lucy Fabray was just a mere memory.
But at the end of her sophomore year, things collapsed.
Just a few months after Frannie’s perfect wedding, Russell ran off with his secretary, leaving Judy and Quinn alone with the house. She was his little girl, the apple of his eye, and yet he just left her, like it was so easy, like she wasn’t even worth staying around for. But that didn’t make sense. She was Quinn. She wasn’t Lucy. She was the perfect example of a Fabray. She had changed everything about herself to make her parents proud, to make him proud, and yet he still left. Quinn was devastated.
To make matters worse, when her boyfriend (some football player she didn’t really even care about that much) comforted her, Quinn fell into bed with him in order to just stop thinking. That wasn’t the bad part, though. Well, yeah, he wasn’t that good and she didn’t really orgasm or anything, but that wasn’t what was bad. The bad part was when some girls at school spotted her buying Plan B the next day. No one believed Quinn’s insistence that it was her first time and that it was an accident; the whole school soon assumed the whole Chastity Princess deal had just been an act. Her reputation was ruined. Between her home just having her lush of a mom and her school full of kids calling her a slut, Quinn felt like she didn’t belong anywhere. The only person who seemed to still be there for her was Kitty, but she lived all the way in San Francisco.
So she spent a lot of time after that at church. Judy found a new one after the divorce to avoid judgment, and their new church had some college-aged youth minister who wanted to start a worship band. Since Quinn was there a lot, she figured she’d volunteer to at least sing back up or maybe set up instruments or find a way to play the flute, since she picked it back up (colleges loved musicians). But the minister ended up teaching her guitar. After a few months, she was confident enough to perform at the band’s first service. While her life had become a bit weird, she still felt some spiritual connection, and putting that in music was amazing.
Somehow that confidence spread throughout the rest of her, and she went back to school her junior year determined to do what Fabrays did best: win. So by the time she graduated, Quinn had become the captain of the cheerleading team, the founding member of the God Squad, president of National Honors Society, vice-president of the student body, and the school’s valedictorian, all while still playing Christian rock music in the basement of her church. Of course, her popularity never returned to her pre-Plan B level, and she never got that Homecoming or Prom Queen crown. Though that bothered her a bit (and she hated that it bothered her), Quinn was satisfied with her high school experience, but she was ready to get the hell out of Dallas.
She had applied almost exclusively to Ivies and a few other high profile schools. After some debate, she settled on going to one of her Ivy choices, Columbia University. If anything would be different from conservative Texas, it would be New York City.
♫ Now I’m letting go ♫
New York City turned out to be just what Quinn needed. Immediately upon moving into her dorm, Quinn found herself among people that were so unlike anyone she knew back home. All the women were defiant, worldly, and proud to be women. She ended up bonding with a lot of the women at Columbia’s sister school, Barnard, and took classes there when she could. Those classes introduced her to feminist texts from multiple points of view, all of them challenging her own feminist beliefs and developing her thoughts. She really lived up the college freshman experience that way, while doing other dumb freshman things, like experimenting with weird hair colors, cutting her hair, and getting piercings in places that weren’t her earlobes.
Of course, feminism and politics and hair colors weren’t the only thing Quinn experimented with. In yet another clichéd college experience, Quinn found herself kissing a girl and liking it. Really liking it. Kissing led to touching which led to clothes coming off and Quinn having her first real orgasm ever. And, okay, it freaked her out a little. Okay, a lot. But pieces of her life started to fall together as she realized that, holy shit, she was not straight. Those things she had thought and felt about other girls were not heterosexual.
And while she wished she could say she took it in stride, she ended up feeling a lot of self loathing. She panicked and stopped talking to that girl, bleached her hair back to blonde, and tried to go back to “normal”. She couldn’t be gay or bi or anything because she was a Fabray and Fabrays are not gay. Quinn hated the whole Fabray brand, but if she wasn’t a Fabray, who the hell was she? And what would happen if her dad, who was paying her tuition to this very expensive school, ever found out? And was it wrong for her to want to still be on her dad’s good side despite the divorce and abandonment?
Quinn had a bit of a crisis and it got bad enough that she did another thing that wasn’t Fabray approved: therapy. Though it took a while for Quinn to open up, since she was a very private person, she eventually poured everything out to her doctor: how she felt inadequate compared to sister, how she always wanted her dad’s attention and how that possibly influenced her trying to get guys’ attention, how her mom drank, how she was attracted to girls...She told her therapist things that scared her and disgusted her about herself, and her therapist never even blinked. In fact, her therapist, while sympathetic, was direct about how she wasn’t completely alone. Through talking about it and realizing she was normal and not some freak of nature, Quinn started to get better. She let herself experiment more and focused on finding herself, not on living up to the last name she had. Of course, she was still stressing out a lot over school and needed some kind of release. So she may have slept with a few other girls to help, and maybe drank a bit too much and started to smoke. It wasn’t that bad, though, because she only smoked at parties. Or when she was really stressed.
What really got her interest, though, was a flyer for auditions for an all girl band. They needed a rhythm guitarist, and Quinn had honestly come to miss the confidence that came with playing live music. While she played a lot alone in her room, it was never the same as performing with a band. She probably wasn’t the best, but it was worth a shot, right?
She never expected to connect with the other girls as much as she did. After her audition, she talked with all of them and honestly felt connected to all of them right away. Marley Rose was sweet and funny, with this sassy side she loved. Kat Hummel was very similar, but also gushed with Quinn over her clothes and makeup. And Norah Puckerman...well, there was a connection there right away, and it wasn’t just a mental and emotional one.
The Sirens, the band name she suggested, quickly became her best form of release after hours of studying, and she also made some money with the gigs they kept getting. Eventually she graduated Bachelor of Arts in Women Studies a year before the rest of her band mates were scheduled to graduate. Quinn had planned on going straight to law school in the area in order to become an attorney focusing on women’s cases, but she ended up deferring her enrollment. After graduating summa cum laude, the idea of going straight to another intense program scared her. Also she honestly wasn’t sure she wanted to go to law school, either, not when the highlights of her days were writing and singing and hanging out with the other members of The Sirens.
Somehow she managed to get a job as a receptionist at a dental clinic, and it was enough to foot the bill for a studio apartment. It also provided some health insurance, which meant she could see her therapist for some sessions, though they weren’t as often as she liked. Still, Quinn was enjoying her life and truly felt like she was living the way she always wanted to.
Then Sabrina Smythe came to a show and things just got better.
Quinn threw herself into writing for the album, spending time at work writing out lyrics or coming up with chord progressions. Eventually she got to give her two weeks and, just a few weeks after she left, their first single came out to critical praise and commercial success, with the album following a similar fashion soon after. Now Quinn has an actual loving family with her bandmates and is successful and basically living the dream. She’s even started to accept her sexuality and came out to her bandmates (not that they were surprised, because, well, Norah, but more on that later) and even to Kitty.
But, of course, nothing’s perfect. And, even after years of therapy, Quinn still wants her family to approve of her, even though she still feels betrayed by her father. In order to do that, she’s a lot less honest to them than she is to her real family (her bandmates and Kitty). They don’t know about the little flask she keeps with her, the cigarettes she smokes when she’s stressed, and they definitely don’t know about her sexuality - or how she’s used it to her advantage in the past, but, again, more on that later. They see her tweets sometimes have Biblical captions and assume she’s spreading the good word. They assume she’s a virgin since, well, she hasn’t even dated a guy in years and only hangs out with girls (oops). For now, Quinn’s okay with that. After years of having to be the black sheep of the Fabray family as Lucy Q, Quinn is okay with pretending she’s still the perfect Fabray Girl™.
Oh, and that Lucy thing? Well, her bandmates know her real first name is Lucy, and she’s mentioned a few things about being a bit awkward and overweight as a kid. But Quinn’s not the most open person to begin with, even with her favorite people, so they don’t know the whole story. They don’t know how much she changed herself. They don’t know that the whole Quinn Fabray thing is someone she invented. They don’t know that they don’t know the real her.
They don’t know that she doesn’t really know who she is, either.
♫ I make my own choice ♫
Norah Puckerman: Norah’s like a cigarette; she provides physical release when Quinn’s stressed and Quinn has a hard time quitting. Quinn was automatically attracted to Norah from day one, and she could tell Norah felt the same way. After a few months in the band, a private rehearsal went from Norah helping Quinn on a fingering of a chord to Norah doing something much more pleasurable with those fingers. They constantly would resolve to stop, only to end up with the two of them stumbling to rehearsal together with mismatched buttons and messy hair. They managed to stop for a while when they started working on their debut album, but after the release and subsequent tour, weeks on the road brought them back to each other’s beds. Of course, it was clear from the get go that this was just about sex and desire, enough so they wrote a song about it. They finally stopped again, and the two have managed to get back to the “just friends” thing pretty easily. After all, they’ve always remained friends the whole time; they just don’t want to risk anything by feelings turning to more than friendly feelings. Quinn loves Norah with her whole heart and she knows the feeling’s mutual, but it’s for the good of the band...though they may have already slipped a few times before the tour has even started, though they’ve been better at keeping it a secret this time. And thank god Kat and Marley are going to help keep them separated on tour.
Kat Hummel: Quinn truly admires Kat in several ways. Kat knows more about fashion and makeup than anyone and she can pick the perfect outfits for anyone’s style/body shape - and, god, don’t get Quinn started on her gift giving abilities. Not only that, but Kat is so confident in who she is that it’s insane. Quinn always felt like she had to be one way while growing up - hell, she still feels that way around her family - but Kat is always true to who she is and has even come out to the whole world with no problem. And while Quinn’s religious beliefs are a complicated subject on their own, Kat has always known what she’s believed in that area; they’ve actually had some interesting conversations on the subject. All of that and more are why Quinn’s glad that her cousin has bonded so much with Kat. Quinn has also received endless lectures on smoking and drinking from Kat, since she’s kind of the mother hen of the group. They’re annoying, though accurate and warranted.
Marley Rose: Ever since Quinn met Marley, she’s felt a bit protective over her. Yes, even before she knew about the eating disorder thing. Marley just gives off this sweet and kind vibe, and Quinn loves that about her. Of course, Quinn’s style of protection isn’t as intense as Norah and Kat’s, which is ridiculously suffocating. Seriously, how do they not realize how frustrated Marley is with them? Quinn’s kind of seen herself as the cool, older sister type with Marley, so she’s always felt protective in the sense that she wanted to be there when Marley got interested in things like drinking. She shouldn’t have to experience parties and the like alone. So now that Marley has said she wants to rebel a little, Quinn’s grinning from ear to ear. She’s more than happy to help her explore the world and get out of her comfort zone - and she’ll keep her safe while doing so. And now that Marley’s eating disorder seems to be affecting her again, Quinn can keep an eye on her without suffocating her, either. After all, Quinn knows what it’s like to hate your own body.
Kitty Wilde: Kitty is the only family member Quinn actually looks forward to seeing. While she feels a need to please her parents and sister, and while she loves her nieces, Kitty was always her favorite. They were as close as cousins who lived in different time zones could be. They’d see each other at least twice a year and spent several nights talking on the phone or instant messaging or texting. Kitty’s family was even super helpful during Quinn’s parents’ divorce, even thought Kitty’s mom is her dad’s sister, and Quinn was always there when Kitty needed to talk about the sexual assault she faced. So when Kitty sent Quinn some recordings of Divine Influence, Quinn was more than happy to pass the recordings to higher ups at the label. She’s thrilled for her cousin’s success and is excited to spend months with her on tour. However, she’s still nervous as to how Kitty will react to the “new” her, since once Quinn entered college they spent less time together. So they haven’t even spent much time together since Quinn came out to her. Kitty knows she’s into girls, but she doesn’t know about Norah or anyone else. Quinn’s afraid Kitty will be disappointed if she finds out about the meaningless hook-ups, not to mention the smoking and the feelings she’s developing for her best friend. And while Kitty has gotten used to calling her Quinn, at least in public, Quinn’s afraid of what name might slip out of Kitty’s mouth on accident - especially if it’s not just her name.
Rachel Berry: Quinn heard a lot about Rachel Berry growing up. She was Kitty’s best friend, after all, so Kitty talked about her on the phone or when she visited the Fabrays or when Quinn visited the Wildes. It took a while before Quinn ever met Rachel (sometime after she had become Quinn and wasn’t Lucy anymore) and, sure enough, she got why Kitty liked her. She was a good friend. While Quinn never bonded with her as much as she bonded with Kitty, they still had each other’s numbers and IM names and Facebook accounts. They would message or text from time to time. The fact that Rachel was the lead singer of Kitty’s band was just an added bonus, since it met they’d get to hang out some more, too. So, months ago, when Quinn heard hyperventilating in the bathroom and found Rachel, she immediately flew into action. She knew the signs of a panic attack all too well. They talked a lot and Quinn got her in contact with her therapist with Sabrina’s help. Rachel asked her to keep all of that a secret from Kitty, though Quinn hopes she can convince her to tell Kitty about it eventually...which is kind of hypocritical when she hasn’t told Kitty a lot of things. She’s actually told Rachel a lot of things that Kitty doesn’t know. She’s never been so open and vulnerable with someone as she’s been with Rachel. And the fact that Rachel’s smile makes her heart skip a beat really doesn’t help matters.
Fiona Hudson: Like all The Sirens, Quinn was invited to Carole and Burt’s wedding, and she met Fiona there, and she’s seen her a few other times when the band was in town or her family visited them elsewhere. And now Fiona’s playing drums for them on tour. It’s just kind of weird, because the four girls in the band are so close and even end their tour set with a song sung by just the four of them, and Fiona’s just...there. Quinn knows that Kat isn’t too fond of Fiona, even if Kat hides it behind jokes, and that was also why Quinn chose to house Fiona for the rehearsals in New York City. While Quinn only has a one-bedroom, she figured keeping her away from Kat and easing Kat into seeing her step-sister more often would be preferred for everyone. So Fiona’s graciously taken the couch and the two of them have started to talk more. It’s surprisingly nice, actually, having someone else there, and Fiona’s been extra nice to her because of it. Seeing as they could use an official drummer at some point, Quinn has to say that Fiona might end up being a good fit, at least if Kat gets on board with it.
Santana Lopez: Santana is someone Quinn’s known for a long time, as well as someone she’s known in the biblical sense. The two of them shared a class their freshman year at Columbia, and Santana...Santana was Quinn’s first. Well, technically only her first girl, but still her first. So, as mentioned before, after her first time with a girl, Quinn went into deep denial and self-loathing and pushed Santana as far away as she could. When Quinn started to accept herself, though, she never really talked to Santana again, only to have her show up as their new publicist...and it’s weird. Really weird. If Santana wasn’t acting so professional, Quinn would be afraid of what Santana would do to her career. She wants to apologize, but, really, it seems better to just, like, not bring it up. After all, Santana’s been with enough people that maybe she doesn’t really care? Maybe?
Sabrina Smythe: Quinn is truly grateful for Sabrina. Somehow Sabrina stumbled upon one of their shows and ended up changing their lives for good and for the better. Sabrina not only discovered them, but she truly launched their careers mostly from her own manipulation of the public eye. Quinn, a fairly good manipulator herself, can appreciate that. She also appreciates that she sets up her therapy appointments as well as Rachel’s. Sabrina also happens to be smart and a great person to talk to for some intellectual stimulation. Whenever they talk, however, Quinn can tell Sabrina is looking for a lot more than intellectual stimulation...and while Quinn has no interest and knows that Sabrina would flirt with a rock if it had boobs (she’s like Norah in that way, honestly), she doesn’t mind flirting with her to get an advantage. And if flirting with Sabrina helped get her cousin a record deal? Well, Quinn’s a-okay with that. It’s not like she promised her anything or slept with her for it, but using her sexuality to her advantage is totally cool.
Blair Anderson: Quinn and Blair hit it off ridiculously easy. Blair brought up going to Cornell and Quinn “joked” that it wasn’t a real Ivy. Thankfully Blair took it as a joke, or at least wasn’t offended, and the two have been getting along ever since. While Quinn can’t necessarily understand turning down an Ivy education, she’s enjoyed having Blair to talk about books and films with, and she finds her similar background with an overshadowing older sister interesting, too. She can definitely relate to feeling like a stranger in her family, and Quinn just finds her easy to talk to. Ridiculously easy, really. But seeing as it’s not hard to notice the animosity between Blair and Rachel, she’s not sure what to make of her just yet.
Jackie Puckerman: Honestly Quinn has enough drama to deal with that she hasn’t thought much about Jackie at all. The two haven’t talked much, anyways. In a lot of ways, Jackie just reminds her of a younger version of Norah, and seeing how Jackie obviously looks up to her, it makes sense. But beyond that, she hasn’t put much thought into Jackie Williams and doesn’t necessarily plan on doing so unless she has to. She’s nice to her and Jackie seems nice back, and that’s about it since, again, it’s not like a mean thing or anything. Quinn just has enough to deal with.
Sam Evans: When Quinn found out Sam didn’t go to college, she was a bit shocked. In her mind, everyone should go to college and everyone deserves a right to an education. She even talked to Kitty about it to find out more, and Kitty mostly shrugged it off and said that Sam wasn’t confident about her abilities and she didn’t have the money. Since then, Quinn’s been very politely trying to correct Sam on grammar mistakes and trying to educate her as subtly as possible. What? All women should be smart, and while Quinn can’t replace a college degree, maybe she can inspire Sam to go after one in the future.

Tackling Tech: How former NFL linebacker, Mike Brown, went from the gridiron to Silicon Valley
“Fearless and Flawless,” “Fearless and Flawless,” “Fearless and Flawless.” Like a broken record, these are the words that are constantly repeated in the head of former NFL linebacker, Mike Brown. As he rallied his troops as the captain of his high school football team at Alief Taylor High School in Houston, Texas, he chanted the three-word phrase. At Duke University, his opponents felt his words turned into physical power as he crushed them on the gridiron. Now, after lacing the cleats up for the Indianapolis Colts and hanging the pads after several years of professional football under his belt, a new chapter has begun. “Fearless and Flawless” is now applied on Silicon Valley through his one-of-a-kind sports gaming platform, Win-Win.
Some may ask, what’s the difference between Win-Win and any other fantasy league or site? Well, first of all, Win-Win is not a fantasy league. Although it began as a fantasy platform, Win-Win quickly juked its competitors and transformed itself into a platform that focused on once-in-a-lifetime experiences, while contributing to outstanding charitable causes via the athlete. Recognizing that a large portion of the billions that were being raked in by the many fantasy sports gaming companies of the world was because of the use of the likeness of athletes at the top of their game, while not compensating them, Brown sprung into action. Win-Win swiftly received substantial buy-in from a drove of NFL players and the gaming industry as a whole. Only two weeks after incorporating Win-Win, this level of support led to being named the “Most Innovative Fantasy Sports Business” by the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FTSA) in 2016. Secondly, imagine your grand prize on steroids. So instead of pocketing a large amount of loot for winning your league, try flying in a private jet with the Arizona Cardinals’ Patrick Peterson on your way to roam the sidelines with him for the Alabama vs. LSU game to get the ultimate SEC football experience. Who can care for mere bragging rights among friends or co-workers, when Win-Win could land you at a post-game dinner with your favorite NBA Baller. These kinds unique experiences are what Win-Win create and use to differentiate itself from a sea of opponents that includes FanDuel, DraftKings, and many others that have caused sports fans to not even entertain the idea of anything fantasy due to being immersed in legal battles that have casted a grey cloud over the fantasy sports industry at large.
While these epic prizes are dope, the biggest and most important upside to participating in Win-Win’s platform is the opportunity to support charitable causes. How, you ask? With Brown’s football career providing him access to some of the world’s best to put the pads on, he creatively identified a way to pair fantasy gaming and charitable donative efforts. Leveraging his existing NFL relationships with the likes of Malcolm Jenkins, Larry Fitzgerald, Carson Palmer, Michael Bennett and others, he developed strategic partnerships for athletes to collaborate with Win-Win. This fit into his business model that requires an athlete to sponsor a fantasy tournament with a majority of the proceeds resulting from tournament entry fees that go toward the sponsoring athlete’s charity with Win-Win only retaining a small portion. Thereby, a charitable perk is ingrained in the gaming experience. So even when a participant does not win a unique experience, they have contributed to a charitable effort. With tournament formats such as Pick’Em, Over/Under/On, Squad Up, Battle Bracket, and others, a wide selection of games is at the disposal of any sports fan. All in all, it’s a Win-Win for everyone involved.
Although Brown is all smiles with the traction that Win-Win is gaining, Silicon Valley is no joke. With some of the best minds in innovation, startup creation, and venture capital investment, many dreams are hashed, and even more are chewed up and spat out faster than a Twista verse in the southern San Francisco Bay area of California. The learning curve is steep and time is limited for those who are adept in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (otherwise known as STEM). Knowing that, the two-time ACC All-American understood that an effort similar to climbing Mount Everest was required to tackle the tech behemoth. Initially thinking of studying to receive a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), and a career in tech being uncharted territory, he quickly shifted gears once he realized the prospect of tech and it securing his long-term success.
To his surprise, the idea of seriously pursuing a career tech came into play when a friend of his introduced the prospect of attending Draper University. Established in 2012 by the well-known billionaire venture capitalist, Tim Draper, an immediate intrigue settled in. After expressing interest in enrolling, and having Draper personally reach out via phone and offering a full scholarship, it was a no-brainer for Mike to take his talents to the west coast. What was initially frustrating, quickly turned into bottled up energy that had no option but to burst on the pacific coast. “At first, I was upset that I didn’t know much about tech. But after being blown away about after learning more, I got very excited about the opportunity and my decision to move out west.” At Draper, Brown dove headfirst into the nine-week startup boot camp and crash course aimed at business and entrepreneurship. Shortly after two months, dedicating his 2013 summer to his studies, and going through a rigorous tech pledge process, Brown was numero uno in his class. Talk about hitting the ground running and going for broke. If Silicon Valley didn’t see the 230-pound linebacker coming at them with a full head of steam, they were definitely sure of it after the program was drilled with a perfect form tackle.
Many may think Win-Win was conceived through an elaborate plan involving some of the most esteemed philanthropic minds. Not the case. It was pretty simple from Brown’s standpoint once he had an “AHA!” moment. After being asked to participate in a fantasy football league during an internship of his, he asked “so what is this for?” since he ironically never picked up on the fantasy hype despite being the subject of fantasy during his time as pro. His colleague responded with the answer of “bragging rights.” In that instant, the light bulb went off. The idea of making use of fantasy funds for the greater good of society and charitable efforts rather than to verbally joust and chest pound among co-workers was at the top of mind. From that point and a little more than 9-months dedicated towards product launch, Brown served as the head doctor to deliver baby Win-Win into the world of unique sports experiences.
An obvious outlier, Brown embarks on his quest to shake up the fantasy gaming industry that rakes in more than $25 billion an annual basis. Although the former ACC defensive freshman of the year is rather accomplished at this point in his life, that did not come without the obstacle course of negativity that any kid from an urban city would face. The city of Houston caused football standout to quickly assess his future, as he reached a crossroads in the life decisions that he was making. With one foot rooted in immaturity and decisions that were not conducive to his long-term success, and another foot firmly planted in achievement as an exceptional student-athlete with a strong future ahead of him, Brown reached a fork in the road in one defining moment that he can speak on to this day with excellent clarity. Essentially, it was his Tre moment from the movie “Boyz in the Hood,” where he gets out of the car to escape a continued negative lifestyle, as Doughboy and his boys seek to avenge the death of Ricky.
The pivotal turning point came when he originally agreed to rob a local store with his friends, but was the first to opt out after realizing the possible consequences that would have come of his juvenile misstep. Upon doing so, his friends took the same action. This inaction allowed the young kid from the H to see the silver lining in the whole situation, as he and his friends just decided to go play basketball instead and continue their day uninterrupted. Moral of the story: Nobody was shot, nobody was harmed, nobody had property taken from them, nobody was arrested, families were still intact, and instead of being turned into an adult in an instant by the judicial system, a group of teenagers got to be just that for the remainder of the day. As retrospective thought set in, the then 16-year-olds eyes were opened up to the positive impact that he can have on himself and those around him. In a small, yet profound, chain of events, he immediately understood that others viewed him as a leader, and realized his potential power to effectively guide social change. So despite still being in the hood, his newfound transformation was irreversible, as he told himself “that’s kind of cool to know that I have some level of influence to not do negative things, and that I have the power to take a stand and people will follow.”
Understanding that these types of pressures plague inner-city kids across the nation to this day, the early graduate from Duke ultimately seeks to have Win-Win serve as a vehicle to educate and encourage today’s youth on the career potential that exists within the tech industry. With a well-documented lack of diversity within the technological field, promoting a career in tech, along with strong emphasis towards the 18 and under crowd to pursue entrepreneurial path, are at the forefront of Brown’s long-term strategy to take an active stake in the dreams of others. “Looking five to ten years in the future, I see Win-Win building bridges, creating access for others through investment opportunities. My goal is to be in a position where my family is set, but I can also invest in young brothers and sisters that are trying to make something happen with their own ideas and being in a position to fund those dreams,” said the Founder of Win-Win on reinvesting educational and financial resources into minority-based communities.
Heavily supported by the NFL community, along with the sporting community as a whole, it’s clear that Win-Win is an easy concept to buy into and provides a value-add for everyone involved. Growing attention and industry accomplishments being achieved at the speed of light is only the tip of the iceberg looking ahead. As a part of Silicon Valley’s premiere 500 Startup accelerator, which is a four month program known to give startups a shot in the arm that develop them into legitimate startup powerhouses, do not be surprised if incredibly rapid growth is exhibited by Win-Win in the near future. Honed in on expansion efforts to include retired athletes, entertainers, sports influencers, and some of the finest tastemakers, it would be a poor decision to bet against this winning recipe. With these kinds of experience packages never seen before, Brown’s response to the influence behind such ideas was simply “To just crush it.” It’s that kind of attitude and trailblazing mindset that is putting everyone on notice. So memorandum to the gaming world, be prepared for Mike Brown to say “hello” and then some. And by “hello,” know that the gaming world’s door to is going to be kicked down.

Wichita State is winning big without Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet
“Better know a Cinderella” introduces you to the new-look Shockers.
Wichita State shouldn’t be this good. The Shockers were powered by Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet for the last four years, but now both have graduated to the pros. They were the heart and soul of these Shockers teams for what felt like an eternity. They’re gone and the Shockers aren’t.
Wichita State sits tied with the Illinois State Redbirds at the top of the Missouri Valley Conference. They don’t have a true star. Instead, Gregg Marshall has to rely on a balanced offense and a deep bench. So far, it’s working in a big way. The Shockers are 25-4 overall and made their debut in the AP Poll this week at No. 25.
This is the first Shockers team in Marshall’s tenure where no senior averages at least five points a game. He has instead leaned on a variety of underclassmen and they are playing unselfishly on both ends of the floor.
Wichita State is one of eight teams that ranks in the top 20 of both offensive and defensive efficiency this season with the No. 18 offense and No. 17 defense, per KenPom.
It shouldn’t shock anyone that this team is contending again, but how they’re doing it is a bit of a surprise. Here’s what you need to know about the Shockers heading into March Madness.
Conference: Missouri Valley
Record: 25-4, 15-1
Who to watch: This team doesn’t have a true star, but sophomore forward Markis McDuffie is their closest thing. After being named the Missouri Valley Freshman of the Year, he leads the team in scoring, rebounding and steals with 11.8 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game and 1.1 steals a night. He’s their de facto leader, but relies on his lieutenants to help get the job done.
The team operates around three underclassmen: McDuffie, junior guard Landry Shamet, and freshman forward Darral Willis Jr.. They pace the offense while junior center Shaquille Morris helps holds down the paint. No one player has to score 20 points every night because everyone contributes.
Gimme a good stat: The Shockers currently sit atop the MVC in points per game (81.5), rebounding (41 rpg), and assists (17 apg) while not having a single player average over 12 points, six rebounds, nor four assists per game.
What’s their history in March? Marshall is trying to lead the Shockers to their sixth straight tournament. They’ve had varied success the past five years, ranging from being bounced in the Round of 64 to making the Final Four in 2013. Two years ago, they knocked interstate “rival” Kansas off in the Round of 32. Last year, they had to participate in the First Four game before eventually being knocked out of the madness by Miami in the Round of 32.
Joe Lunardi has the Shockers as an nine seed in his most recent Bracketology. While that doesn’t mean as much a month out from the madness, if they’re still around the nine line come tourney time, they could make things interesting.
What are they good at? The Shockers use a full team effort to take care of business on both ends of the floor. Their bench play has been instrumental to their success. They win by controlling the game at both ends of the court, start to end. It’s hard for teams to keep pace with the high scoring, when they are getting locked up on the defensive end.
Marshall’s teams have been known for their tough defense throughout his tenure, as teams have never managed to average more than 65 points per game against them. This team is no different as they are holding teams to the fifth lowest field goal percentage in the country, as teams shoot just below 39 percent from the field facing this Shockers squad.
What’s their weakness? All four of their losses have come against stiff competition, and come March, that’s all there is. Wichita State’s success stems from their balanced offense. In this sense, their biggest strength is their biggest weakness. They rely on 10 players to contribute at least 13 minutes per game and about five points per game. When players one through 10 don’t show up, they run into trouble. The constant in all four losses has been unbalanced point production. They can’t afford to have any off days once the tournament rolls around.
Can get an at-large bid? Playing in the MVC, their best chance to make March Madness will be to win conference. Lunardi currently has Illinois State in his First Four Out. If the Redbirds win the conference, it would be up to the committee whether the rest of their schedule is enough to get the Shockers an at-large. Their resume, which includes a 1-4 record against teams in the top 50 RPI, doesn’t scream “We got this,” however they’ve saved their best play for the end of the season. If they can carry this winning streak through the end of the season, they should have a case for an at-large bid. Last season, they earned an at-large bid after Northern Iowa won the conference tournament, albeit with a slightly more impressive resume.
Show me a cool play:
Simple defense-to-offense. Morris gets the steal and starts the break and McDuffie trails to clean up the mess. Basketball baby!
Anything else?
Wichita State and Kansas don’t play in the regular season, but wouldn’t it be great if they matched up again in the tournament. They’re in the same state and it would force the Governor of Kansas, Sam Brownback, to either choose a side or do this again:

Lunardi currently has them potentially matching up in the Round of 32. However it is just February, so seeding is still completely subjective. It would be fun though, right?
What’s next for them: The Shockers went 2-0 last week to get them to 10 straight wins, beating the third and fourth ranked teams in the MVC, Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois respectively. The Shockers took down Southern Illinois 87-68 on Feb. 15 and blew past the Panthers 73-44 on Feb 18. They play their last two games of the regular season against Evansville on Feb. 21 and Missouri State on Feb. 25.
Next Game: Evansville vs Wichita State: Saturday, Feb. 21 at 8 PM ET on ESPN3.
