After The Rain - Chapter 7
The Train

“Come on!” The little girl giggled, gesturing to the boy behind her. They were running along the hallway, escaping from the big bad enemies that’d just caught them spying. It was her favorite game to play, spies, and he always liked to play it with her too.
Her mama said it wasn’t real, but she was just being a spoilsport. She’d heard Aedion use that word one, though she didn’t know quite what it meant.
It didn’t matter anyway. Her best friend was with her, and that’s all that did matter.
After turning a corner, she finally slowed to a stop, peeking back around to see if they were still being chased. The boy stopped next to her, breathing heavily from the run.
“I think they’re gone,” she whispered, wiggling her bare toes on the marble floor. Her mama didn’t like her running around barefoot all the time, but she didn’t like her shoes. They were so tight, she couldn’t run in them. Her mama didn’t listen when she said that, just said she wasn’t supposed to be running. Not inside at least. She had to be a little lady, but the little girl didn’t want to grow up quite yet.
“What does this mean, Rhoe?” The little girl heard her mom’s voice reverberating down the hallway, and she realized that she and the boy had ended up near her papa’s office.
“It’s a threat,” her papa said, and she frowned at the way he sounded. She wanted to give him a hug.
“Gods,” her mama cursed. “How did you even get involved with a man like Ioan Jayne?” Who was that? She glanced over at the boy, but he looked just as confused as her.
“I didn’t,” her papa replied. “Someone in the company did, and now Jayne is trying to use this little influence to clamber up to more money. Like always.”
“Well, we can’t give in,” her mama said, and the little girl frowned. “But we can give this to the police.”
Her voice seemed to be moving closer, and the little girl didn’t have time to move before her mama was exiting the room, looking surprised as she spotted the two children nearby.
“What’s wrong, mama?” The little girl asked, and her mama just painted a smile on her face, stepping towards them and crouching down to be at eye level.
“Nothing, Fireheart,” she said, brushing a piece of her hair back. “Why don’t you two go run along to the kitchen? I think the cook has a treat for you.”
The little girl’s eyes lit up with excitement, and she looked over at the boy, who was looking back at her with the same expression.
She’d be a grown up at some point, but for now, she could just be a kid.
--------
She was in utter darkness. There was something scratchy covering her eyes, and no matter how much she tried to claw at it, she couldn’t remove it. Maybe that was due to the way her arms were bound, maybe that was due to the hands on her, clawing at her dress and her legs. She was being pulled backward, struggling and kicking as she was rolled in her stomach.
Hands roughly pawed at her body, and she panted for air, suffocated by the sickening stench in the room. The stench of death. The stench of the body next to her, filling her senses and draining her entire essence into nothing. Nothing but utter doom.
They’d been so close. They’d been so close. But it was futile, and too late, and now he was paying the cost. Not her, but it should’ve been her. It should’ve been her.
She gasped for air, her heart beating painfully as she was lifted up by her bound arms, the rope hung to a hook, keeping her uncomfortably slung into a sitting position. She still couldn’t see either, the blindfold covering her eyes.
She’d been unable to move no less than fifteen minutes ago, whatever drug she’d been forced immobilizing her. But she could certainly feel everything now.
“This’ll teach you what happens when you try to leave,” a sharp voice she didn’t recognize hissed in her ear, and there was nothing she could do as her dress was ripped off, leaving her in her underclothes. She kicked at the culprit, shouting expletives, but he didn’t try anything more, leaving her hanging there. Alone.
She panted, fighting the ache in her body as she shook her head, trying to loosen the blindfold enough to see. She could hear the distinct sound of a body being dragged across the stone, his body.
There was shuffling, so much shuffling and noise, a creaking of a door opening and then being slammed shut. And then she was really alone.
Until the door creaked open again, and slow footsteps sounded her way. She shook her head again, managing to get the blindfold to slip a little bit down her nose.
She was fighting to see anything as a hand slowly dragged up her bare leg. She shifted, trying to fight it off, blinking to try and clear the eye that was slightly peeking out of the blindfold. But the hand gripped her thigh tightly, pressing it against the concrete with bruising force.
“Fuck you,” she spit, even as her hands were dropped from where they were held, still tied together, but leaving her crashing on the floor. It jostled her blindfold again, and she was able to see just enough to see above her. And the sight made her want to vomit.
It was -
“Celaena!” Rowan’s voice broke through her dream, and she gasped as her eyes shot open, finding him right by her bed, wild concern in his eyes. His hand was on her arm like he’d been shaking her awake, and she blinked rapidly, panting for air.
Her unfortunately short nightgown (she could thank Cairn for that) was once again stuck to her with sweat, and she shakily wiped at her eyes.
“Sorry for waking you,” she said, her voice croaky, making her wonder if she’d been shouting in her sleep. Rowan didn’t move, staying crouched by her side.
“Don’t apologize,” he said, furrowing his brows. His hair looked messy from sleep, his eyes puffy like he’d woken up from a fitful sleep to wake her from a fitful sleep. “Are you alright?”
Her eyes slowly dropped to the hand still on her arm and he seemed to sense her discomfort, removing it from her skin. She stared at the place where it’d been, before slowly glancing up to meet his gaze. There seemed to be genuine concern in it.
Celaena cleared her throat, glancing away and sitting up in the bed. Her sweaty hair was glued to her neck, and she lifted a shaky hand to smooth it away. Her braid was coming apart, and she felt the sudden urge to fix it, to pretend like something in her life wasn’t falling to pieces.
But she didn’t have any of her stuff.
Frantically, she pulled at her hair with her fingers, trying to untangle the sweaty clumps with her also sweaty hands. Needless to say - it wasn’t working well.
Rowan shifted where he knelt, pulling a comb out of his traveling bag. Celaena took it without words, running it through her long hair. It tugged at several points, but she just kept ripping it through, not stopping until her hair was smoothed through. And then she braided it quickly, tying it with the ribbon she’d abandoned earlier.
“Thank you,” she said hesitantly, giving him the comb back. Her hands were still shaking. That’d been twice in only two days that she’d had a nightmare about that moment. That horrible, earth-shattering moment.
Probably because of where she was going.
That brought into sharp recall who was bringing her there, and she stiffened. Sure, Rowan was a mystery, a seemingly kind mystery, but he could be just playing her. He could turn out exactly the same. He could be laughing at her internally as she accepted his words, his comb.
She had to be stronger than that.
“You can go back to sleep,” Celaena dismissed, nodding to the armchair in the corner. Her gut twisted a little as she realized how uncomfortable it likely was. But that wasn’t her problem - he was legitimately kidnapping her.
Rowan pursed his lips, hesitating, but nodded and stood up carefully.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” He asked, stepping back toward his chair. It was a lie, but Celaena just nodded. It wasn’t his problem anyway.
“I’ll be right back,” she rasped, pushing herself to a shaky stand. She had to brush past him to get to the bathroom, and the brief contact made her tense. She half-expected him to try and follow her, he probably had to always have some sort of watch on her, but he just stayed by his chair, letting her go.
In the bathroom she braced herself on the tiny sink, squeezing her eyes shut. And then she turned on the faucet, splashing cold water on her face. And then she glanced up at herself, at her pale and splotchy face, her messy hair, her dead eyes.
She allowed herself one minute to break, a small sob escaping her as she covered her mouth with a hand, squeezing her eyes shut. But when that minute was over, she scrubbed at her face and straightened, smoothing her expression.
Celaena didn’t look at Rowan as she reentered the tiny room, immediately heading for the bed, laying down and pulling the sheets back over herself. She acted like she was falling back asleep, but facing away from him her eyes refused to close, staring at the wall instead.
She already knew she wasn’t getting any more sleep that night.

𝖔𝖓𝖈𝖊 𝖉𝖚𝖇𝖇𝖊𝖉 𝖆𝖘 𝖆𝖓𝖉𝖔𝖗𝖗𝖆'𝖘 𝖆𝖘𝖘𝖆𝖘𝖘𝖎𝖓, it was not an upbringing that celaena had grown into. when king havilliard slaughtered millions in his own plight for power, celaena's parents, two nobleheads, fell victim to his brutality. celaena had just been eight years old when she had awoken in a pool of her parents' blood, and it had stained her skin in ways that no water could wash. weeks later, the starving and nearly frozen to death child was found by arobynn hamel, a leader of a ring of assassins who took celaena under his wing. he wasn't a paternal figure, but he taught her how to survive, despite his methods being brutal. when he realized her left hand was weaker in combat than her right, he told her to break her right hand or he'd do it himself. so, that night, she slammed her right hand in a door and broke two bones so she could learn to be ambidextrous. he taught her how to slip from any bindings by letting her stay on the ground for days in her own filth until she figured out how to escape. this sort of training led her to become known as andorra's assassin despite her young age, the deadliest assassin in the small country nestled between france and spain.
by the time she was sixteen, she had gained the attention of one of andorra's most dangerous crime lords, ioan jayne, who sought out celaena and the one person who meant the most to her -- sam cortland, her first love. sam had accepted a contract to kill jayne and his right hand, rourke farran, so that he could use the money to start a life with celaena. however, the mission went terribly wrong as sam was captured and celaena was baited into the trap, where she was forced to watch sam die the worst, most agonizing death she can recall ever seeing. blinded by rage once she was rescued, she returned to get revenge on farran, but she was intercepted by authorities and thrown into the salt mines, one of the many prison camps amongst andorra.
most people only survived the death camps for a few months at a time, but celaena was too stubborn to die. she kept her head low except for one particular night. one night where she snapped and barreled through guard after guard. it was the ninth anniversary of her parents' death, and she had her eye on the escape. did she think she'd get there? no, no. but death would be an equal blessing. she had just barely kissed her fingers to the edge of the mines when she was dragged back down, laughing wildly as she faced her punishment.
she kept her head low for months to come after that, her frame thin and malnourished, when the king's guard came for her. she was selected by the crown prince dorian to come to the glass castle, where she would soon learn she was to compete against twenty three other dangerous figures in andorra ( all men, of course ) to be the king's champion. she had negotiated her freedom with dorian. if she won the competition, then she would work for his father for four years before she would be granted total freedom. as far as the court was concerned, she was not celaena sardothien, andorra's assassin. that would put a target on her back. so, she gained a pseudonym, lady lillian gordaina, in order to give her the best fighting chance in the competition.
the competition wasn't easy, especially in the final trials where she learned that the largest competitor, cain, was cheating to find gains for himself. he nearly bested her, but she ended up coming out on top. she served king havilliard for four years ( often playing him by exchanging information from his targets before letting them change their name and escape with their lives, robbing sick houses to present body parts for the king ) before she was given the freedom she had worked hard to earn.
now that she's earned her freedom, celaena is exploring europe with a large question mark in her mind. she has an apartment in the slums of andorra from before she was taken to the mines, but the salary she was given for her work won't last forever, so for now, she's taking on freelance assassin jobs in order to maintain a warm place to sleep at night and food in her stomach while she works to find her purpose in this new lease on life.

C.O.D.E.N.A.M.E.S. - chapter one
First chapter of my Throne of Glass x Agents of SHIELD crossover...hope you enjoy 😊
Tumblr media
masterlist
Celaena Sardothien was one of the world’s best assassins. Of course, no one knows that. The only thing that they do know is a name. And her reputation. Looking back on it, the start of her reputation could’ve been better, but it’s grown so much that she is on the top ten of every most wanted list, including INTERPOL’s. Thing is, they have no idea what she looks like. Or even that she’s a she.
At the moment, Celaena was on one of her best missions yet. If she completed this, she was sure that Arobynn would finally bring her into his inner circle. They got all of the best missions, paid the most, but the best of it was the fact that they got to know everything. And she means everything. If Celaena wanted to even have a chance at finding out what happened to her parents, she needed to get there.
“I have eyes on the target.”
-You are a go to proceed-  The response crackled through Celaena’s ear. Taking a deep breath, she took aim on her target. To anybody else, he looked like any 9-5 worker with a family and two dogs. But too Arobynn, and everybody else that worked for him, he was one of their biggest competitors. His name was Ioan Jayne and he was trying to take all of Arobynn’s clients. Of course, they were too scared of what would happen to them if they strayed from Arobynn to ever leave him, but still. He was trying to steal their business. And you never cross Arobynn Hamel.
Distracted momentarily, Celaena turned her head when she heard something rustling behind her. Shaking her head, she turned back around and looked back through the scope. It was probably just the wind. Still, it had Celaena on her toes. It was never just nothing, but Celaena was too focused on the task in front of her to take any mind to it. Taking a deep breath, and recentering on her target, Celaena clicked off the safety. Just as she was about to pull the trigger, she heard the release of a safety and a cold barrel pressed against the back of her head.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t pull that trigger.”

If Sam Didn’t Die That Night
suggested by @_fadingsunlight (insta)
Sam Cortland had one more job before he could taste freedom, with the girl he loved at his side. Or so he thought.
Because that job hadn’t gone well for Sam. He had played with a psychopath, and now the psychopath wanted to play with him.
For hours, he had lain on a table, trapped in the dark basement of the owners of The Pits, because he was a fool. A stupid, lovesick fool, blinded by hope and preoccupied by bliss. For hours, he had been cut and brutalised and tortured, enduring pain so agonizing he forgot his own name. But never hers. It was his constant, his last tether to reality.
Celaena.
A knife cut across his collarbone, blood seeping out in its wake, following like acolyte follows their master. His screams echoed, calling out for a girl who wasn’t there.
Celaena.
He held on, wouldn’t let himself black out. He didn't dare stare at the face above his, bloodstained and grinning like a child with a new plaything.
Celaena.
But then the pain stopped. It left, the sound of receding footsteps reverberating around the empty basement. He heard stairs creak, and then nothing.
He knew, then and there, who it was.
Celaena.
She was here. No, no, no.
Everything hurt. Everything bled. But he forced himself to move, forced his muscles to comply. Slowly, ever so slowly, he shifted himself to the right, closer to the edge of the table. A groan, more pain, and again he moved.
It was progress, but it was slow. Too slow. He had to save her, had to get to her. Finally, he reached the edge. He used every muscle, every part of his protesting body to push himself up. He managed to lean on his elbows, a start, when something began to fill the air. A strange smell. Sam realised too late what it was.
Gloriella.
He collapsed, the poison taking over, as he fell off the table onto the floor. He didn't register the pain, even as he felt someone throw him over a shoulder. Their face must've been masked, protecting them against the gloriella.
He wanted to fight, to struggle, but his body was no longer his. The poison was in full effect. They carried him into some sort of meeting room, where in the corner of his eye he spotted the dead body of Ioan Jayne.
What was going on? What was happening? Where was she?
The masked figure dropped him, rather ungracefully, on the floor, his head at eye level with someone’s feet. No, not someone’s feet. Her feet.
Celaena.
Oh, Gods, tell me she isn’t dead.
Unfortunately, the gods answered his prayer. Sam was helpless as he watched Rourke Farran crouch beside Celaena, running a finger over her face as he said something Sam couldn’t hear. Celaena lay unmoving, a victim to the gloriella, but Sam knew, in his heart, she wasn’t dead.
He wanted to scream, to roar. But most of all, he wanted to save her. He wanted not only to save Adarlan’s Assassin, but the girl he loved. Beautiful, confident, passionate Celaena. What he wouldn’t give to hear her laugh again, to see her smile.
He lay on the floor as they carried her to gods knew where, watching her expressionless face as her head rested at an uncomfortable angle, lying over whoever’s arm it was carrying her. A single tear slipped from one of her eyes as she saw him, and Sam had a horrible realisation.
She couldn’t see his face.
She didn’t know he was alive.
*****
Sam Cortland escaped that building. The gloriella began to lose its effect, and it seemed as though they’d forgotten about him. He clawed his way out, tumbling onto the street, only to have someone catch him, swearing colourfully.
They carried him down the street, but he passed out before he could see where they were going.
For days, he drifted in and out of consciousness, vaguely aware of the two people nursing him back to some sort of health.
It was a week after Sam had seen Celaena’s limp body carried out of the house when he finally regained full consciousness. Every part of him screamed in agony, but he bit down on his pain. He opened his eyes to see a figure with dark hair, pale skin and a brutal scar running down his face.
The figure grinned.
“Well, stranger, glad to see you’re awake. And healing. Although you’ll probably have some wicked scars, not that I’m one to judge.”
“W-Who are you?” Sam croaked.
“Really, that’s the thanks I get? Honestly, if I hadn’t seen how much shit you must've been put through already, I’d punch you for that.”
Sam just stared at the scarred man as he sighed. Neither of them spoke, just stared at each other.
“Do you know anything about Celaena Sardothien?” Sam finally asked, his voice hoarse.
“The assassin? Of course. She’s got a nasty future ahead of her now, that’s for sure.”
“What? What happened? She’s alive?”
The man just stared at Sam for a few moments, frowning. Slowly, he began to speak, “Everyone’s been talking about it, actually. She’s been sentenced to Endovier. If you’re waiting for a job or something, you’re gonna be waiting for a while.”
Sam’s world stopped. Endovier. Endovier. The most brutal slave camp there was. Celaena, his Celaena, in Endovier.
“Why do you want to know?” the man asked.
A beat of silence, then, “Because I love her.”
The man’s eyes widened. He seemed to be thinking, concentrating, when eventually he just shook his head and said, “Well I’ll be. You’re an assassin, aren’t you?”
Sam nodded, only just taking in his words.
“Well then, little assassin, do you want revenge?”
Sam just looked at him. Grief was pouring over him, overwhelming him.
“I want her.”
“Same thing. Tell me, how much are you willing to do to get her? Would you, perhaps, join a rebellion?”
“Anything. I’ll join whatever you want me to if you can free her from that place.”
“Wonderful. Our interests align, you see. To achieve my goal, I must destroy an empire. Your assassin is an added bonus,” the man grinned.
Sam could only stare, and then nod. He didn't care if empires fell, or if kingdoms burned. He just needed Celaena.
“Let’s get acquainted. I’m Ren. Ren Allsbrook.”
*****
Sam joined that rebellion. He fought tooth and nail for it. He devoted his life, his everything, to the cause. He heard about Celaena Sardothien’s participation in the king’s contest. He organised meetings with Princess Nehemia Ytger. He heard about her becoming the King’s champion, but no one ever let him near her. It would ruin their plans, they told him. Wait, they said.
And wait he did. Even when Celaena started to communicate with Archer Finn, he waited. And then, in a scuffle on a street near the Assassin’s Keep with some city guards, one of them—a young woman seemingly from the Southern Continent—trying to keep the peace, Sam Cortland was stabbed.
His fellow rebels fled the street, leaving him to bleed out alone, thinking only of his assassin, his Celaena, whom he would never lay eyes on again.

Ingestre Church + Weston Hall | Ana + Carl
Ingestre Wedding Photographers
Staffordshire Documentary Wedding Photographer
I first sat down with Ana + Carl back in December last year. As we started talking, I soon realised the massive importance photographs held to Ana - definitely a good thing!  As a keen photographer herself, Ana understands so much about photography and knew what she was looking for. Talking through the plans for the day, and my approach, it was soon clear my style was going to be perfect. Choosing truly stunning settings with Ingestre Church, which I've had the pleasure of working at in the past, and the ever popular Weston Hall, all was set for a truly stunning day! On the lead up to the day, I got to spend a little time with Ana + Carl at their gorgeous house in Brocton, meeting their fabulous dogs, and heading up into the nearby countryside...what a stunning place to live! Getting them both relaxed in front of the camera before the day paid dividends during the portraits at Weston Hall. With the imminent weather encroaching the time we had was limited, but we certainly made the most of the day! My coverage for Ana and Carl started capturing the morning preparations at home... One beautiful bride! Deciding to grab a couple of photos with the dogs before putting the dress on, was definitely a good idea!  And what a dress it was... As the emotions started to build at the house, I left Ana with her bridal party to head to Saint Mary the Virgin Ingestre Church to see how our groom was faring... I think it's safe to say the hip-flask went down well ;-) Such fabulous and characterful transport for the wedding - a VW beetle and lovely VW bus for the bridal party! Such a wonderful church, with the procession of the bridal party, started by the fabulous Flower Girl and Ring Bearer... Such a beautiful moment for Ana and her father Ioan. Such a warm and rousing performance from the Ingestre Church Choir, really adding a touch of class during the signing of the register and establishing the mood for the recession of our newly minted Mr & Mrs! From the emotional embraces during the receiving line from church, and the family photographs on the church doorway, it was off to Weston Hall for the reception... Thankfully the threat of rain had subsided on our arrival, allowing us time to enjoy the fabulous gardens with Ana + Carl... Lady luck was definitely on our side once again...the rain came just as we finished the big group photograph - couldn't have timed it much better... The Westminster Suite looked truly stunning for the wedding breakfast! Time for our couple to join the reception! From the wonderful wedding breakfast, it was over to Jayne Dayus-Hunch, a friend of the bride and groom, to open proceedings... After the short heartfelt speech from Carl, it was over to two friends of the Bride and Groom before the best man took the floor! The time in the evening raced by, and before I knew it, it was time to get the formalities underway... Alas, my coverage was soon drawing to a conclusion, so as the guests headed into the photobooth and the buffet, it was time to head out into the gardens with Ana + Carl for a few signature night portraits to conclude their coverage... Ana + Carl, thank you for entrusting the documenting of your fabulous day to me - I truly had the most amazing time with you all, and cannot wait to bring your completed story together with you both! It was fabulous to work alongside Andy and Stefan from Zeus Films once again for Ana + Carl's day - I cannot wait to see the film they've produced!
— indagou Mort, do corredor. O Cofres ficava a apenas alguns quarteirões. — Bebida? — perguntou o homem, limpando o suor da testa. Todos no recinto ainda a observavam, discreta ou descaradamente. — Não — respondeu Celaena, a voz distorcida e grave sob a máscara. O atendente do bar segurou a beira do balcão. Então o homem a havia reconhecido. As sobrancelhas do homem se ergueram. — De mim? — Vim perguntar sobre um homem. — A voz dela estava rouca e inexpressiva. Talvez ele a tivesse despistado. E outra. A assassina parou a alguns metros e embainhou a espada. O homem tremeu e balançou a cabeça.

Morgan, you KNOW I have all kinds of crack theories about After the Rain, but let me treat you to a few random ideas that have popped into my brain lately....
Rowan and Aelin! THEY KNEW EACH OTHER AS CHILDREN AND YOU CAN'T TELL ME I'M WRONG! All those "Fireheart" mentions in the flashbacks...so so sweet but so so painful. I've got a feeling Rowan gave her the locket, or it was from her parents and it had his picture inside and his name engraved, so she would always remember him. Even after she ended up with Arobynn the Asshole
SPEAKING OF AROBYNN...I have a suspicion he kidnapped her and did something shady and horrific to make her think she is Celaena. Memory altering or something. I just know you'd make that bastard do something terrible like that. ORRRR he brainwashed her into believing her parents were dead and he'd saved her from Ioan Jayne (who killed them).
And then because Arobynn is a creepy effing monster, he trapped her into marrying him when she was old enough to get married.
this has been my crack theory. love you Morgan!! 💖
1. Hehehehe 👀 maybe it was someone else whose name starts with R O
2. Arobynn is quite the disgusting bastard
3. Yeah sounds about right haha, that would be very stt of him 🤢 I think he was peak disgusting in that fic
Love you too ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
