Preparedness Brief: WHO advisory of Radiation Medicine BLUF: The World Health Organization warns countries to stockpile medication to counter effects of radiation exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) on January 27th updated its list of medicines that should be "stockpiled for radiological and nuclear emergencies." The WHO issued policy advice for the management of stockpiles that include medicines that "prevent or reduce exposure to radiation, or treat injuries once exposure has occurred." The policy supersedes a 2007 guidance and further highlights the need for governments to retain and store medicines that reduce "radionuclides uptake or increase elimination of radionuclides from the human body." Debrief: These updates typically cover "all-hazards" advice to governments for an array of health emergencies and the generic supplies and materials needed to respond to pandemics, contaminated water, food shortages, mass casualties, etc. In those cases the WHO updates list what type of "personal protective equipment (PPE), trauma kits, fluids, antibiotics and painkillers" should be stockpiled by the government for their citizens. However, in this case the update only included specific drugs "which are known and licensed today to prevent or treat human over-exposure to radiation." Coupled with rhetoric of the U.S. involvement in the Ukraine-Russia and China-Taiwan conflicts; the guidance update could be taken as an advanced warning given the preparedness advisory.
