But yeah, generally outdoor cats = shorter lifespan for cat + dead wildlife and possibly endangerment of species. Which is not to say that outdoor cat owners are making a bad choice, but that it’s important to know the risks involved in keeping a cat outdoors (especially in areas that are not enclosed in a cat proof way, since some cat owners prefer to have part-time indoor cats, and exercise outside can be healthy and fun)

“Part-time indoor cats” is literally the exact same thing as an outdoor cat.

An outdoor cat is a cat that has unrestricted, unsupervised time outside. Even if they come in for cuddles and kibble every night.

The owner of a “part-time indoor cat” is still knowingly putting their pet at grave risk every time they let them outside unrestrained. The cat can still get struck by a car, eat poisoned bait (or rodents who have eaten it), get into fights with other animals, etc. in the time that it spends outdoors.

Outdoor cat owners are making a bad choice. They are knowingly leaving the life of the pet they “love” in the hands of fate.

The only “healthy and fun” exercise a cat should have outdoors is either in a secured enclosure (ie, a “catio”) or at the end of a leash. That is the only safe way for the cat to enjoy the outdoors.

My cat loves going outside but she never brings us anything and she has a bell on her collar so others can hear her

it’s good that you’re trying to do something about it, but you shouldn’t just assume she’s not killing anything just because she has a bell and doesn’t bring stuff back to you. Like the comic says, cats won’t bring home most of the things they kill, and I’m sure cats can figure out how to stalk things without ringing bells on their collars.

And if not for other animals, then keep your cat inside for her own safety. Outdoor cats are always getting killed by predators or run over by cars or contracting diseases. For some reason people assume their cat is ‘too smart’ for anything to happen to them - but cats are animals, not people. They don’t know to look both ways before crossing the street, or to avoid the neighborhood that’s been having coyote sightings, or to not pick a fight with that other cat that’s foaming at the mouth. They just do things.

If you want your cat to have outside time, you can either build a cat patio or harness-train them. It takes some work, but that’s the kind of thing you sign up for when you get any pet (otherwise you might as well just get a pet rock :P)
