#33 (do they play ttrpgs, what characters do they play or are they more likely to DM) for the 1940's Girl Gang?
Most likely to DM: Marj. If anyone can do the job of herding cats players through a story, it is Marj.
Most likely to play a barbarian: Billie. She's just here to hit things. Unfortunately she rolled really high charisma so she keeps getting asked to charm people, so she's settling in as a really sexy barbarian, which plays for laughs.
Most likely to play a bard: Connie. (Don't tell anyone, but I think she's trying to be Eileen, and bless her, it's kind of working.)
Most likely to have far too much fun with this and actually be really good at it: Irene. (And she said she wasn't good at math!)

Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937 – June 30, 2001) was a jazz tenor saxophonist. In a career spanning more than four decades, he played with many of the leading American players of his day and recorded for several prominent labels, including Blue Note.
He was active on the Detroit jazz scene of the mid-1950s, playing in jam sessions with visiting NYC stars. While attending classes in flute and bass at Wayne State University, he further developed his saxophone and compositional skills under the guidance of renowned teacher Larry Teal at the Teal School of Music. He formed his first group. By the time he arrived at Wayne State University, he had transcribed and memorized so many Lester Young solos that his professors believed he had perfect pitch. His college classmates included Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris, and Donald Byrd. He studied music at Kentucky State College.
Born in Lima, Ohio, he was one of fourteen children. He was encouraged by his parents Dennis and Irene (née Farley) and older brother James T. to study music.
Shortly before his army induction in 1960, he was commissioned by UNAC to write some arrangements for the suite “Swings and Strings”, which was performed by a ten-member orchestra and the local dance band of Jimmy Wilkins. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

I wish to know more about the new au/oneshot
-Small brain anon
OKAY ! (i assume u mean the harry & the hendersons one)
i honestly didn't rlly have the idea until that one scene where harry gives sarah (the sister) flowers to make peace with her, n then i mentally pointed and went TWINSDUO :D
and tommy EASILY fits ernie LMAO so that was easy, n the other characters fell into place pretty easily. still tied between who lafleur will be. i THINK quackity...just cause of that one scene where they make up at the end LMFAO im a sucker for preyduo <;33 (i swear they had a different duo name but oh well)
(also before i forget this'll probably be an ao3 post cause a. length and b. not rlly g/t)
techno ofc wouldn't be bigfoot but i'm thinkin like maybe "the nether" is an old myth of an ancient dimension? and ofc piglins would be like the ancient creature to go with it, ergo TECHNOBLADE >:]
idk where to set it tho, cause the hendersons are camping when they find harry but im thinking somewhere else? maybe not idk ,,,
i also wanna include tubbo at some point cause a. fireworkduo and b. i want him to be that one token kid/"nerd" in most movies that knows everything about the problem their facing but they rarely listen to them but in a last ditch effort when the things said token kid are coming true they ask for assistance. and tubbo being tubbo is stubborn or smth. idk.
also i want techno to be more like mentally capable than harry was, i mean not fully human ofc but like. he knows some things. bonus if he plays tricks on sbi or smth >:D
and i also had an image of sbi's house being by a river which can mean mud sometimes, meaning tommy, before really knowing what a piglin was and thinking he was like. a hybrid with a human and a pig, takes a bucket of mud and splashes it on techno LMFAO
(they spend the rest of the evening with techno chasing him. techno wins btw)
and uhh idk i'll just follow the movie pretty much,,,, ALSO random but i want irene to be dream 😊 it fits a lot of fics i've read with sbi LMFAO also i can totally see dream just having an electric knife with him PFFF (but i'm not gonna have irene's character match dream totally, i want rivalsduo bonding <3,,,, maybe i'll throw in another irene-esque character, uHH like fundy :D)
also i want like techno to go more animalistic if he sees gold. just. he goes rabid for it LMFAO (i want to make it so wilbur has like. a lot of gold. maybe a necklace or a golden guitar pick,,,,, BONUS: leading onto that tommy's hair in the sun or wilbur's jumper in the sun >:D)
techno'll probably be like a foot or two taller than hath!bigfoot just cause. g/t. >:]
(size chart bc i love doing them <3)
Tumblr media
(techno: 10 ft/304 cm, wilbur 6'4/195 cm, tommy: 4'9/149 cm, phil: 5'9/180 cm, kristen: 5'6/170 cm, tubbo: 4'5/137 cm
ALSO one last thing abt ages,,,,, tommy'll probably be liiiike 10 or 11 (same for tubbo) wilbur 17 or 18 and i won't bother with phil or kristen. typical parent age GNFSD
OKAY um. thoughts? 👀

National Recording Registry: 2023 Inductees
I was going over the list of 25 pieces the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress inducted this year. It's a fun list:
“The Very First Mariachi Recordings” — Cuarteto Coculense (1908-1909)
“St. Louis Blues” — Handy’s Memphis Blues Band (1922)
“Sugar Foot Stomp” — Fletcher Henderson (1926)
Dorothy Thompson: Commentary and Analysis of the European Situation for NBC Radio (Aug. 23-Sept. 6, 1939)
“Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around” — The Fairfield Four (1947)
“Sherry” — The Four Seasons (1962)
“What the World Needs Now is Love” — Jackie DeShannon (1965)
“Wang Dang Doodle” — Koko Taylor (1966)
“Ode to Billie Joe” — Bobbie Gentry (1967)
“Déjà Vu” — Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (1970)
“Imagine” — John Lennon (1971)
“Stairway to Heaven” — Led Zeppelin (1971)
“Take Me Home, Country Roads” — John Denver (1971)
“Margaritaville” — Jimmy Buffett (1977)
“Flashdance…What a Feeling” — Irene Cara (1983)
“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” — Eurythmics (1983)
“Synchronicity” — The Police (1983)
“Like a Virgin” — Madonna (1984)
“Black Codes (From the Underground)” — Wynton Marsalis (1985)
Super Mario Bros. theme — Koji Kondo, composer (1985)
“All Hail the Queen” — Queen Latifah (1989)
“All I Want for Christmas is You” — Mariah Carey (1994)
“Pale Blue Dot” — Carl Sagan (1994)
“Gasolina” — Daddy Yankee (2004)
“Concerto for Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra” — Northwest Chamber Orchestra, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, composer (2012)
I was a little surprised that "Stairway" wasn't already in the list and that this was the first time any video game music was included, but it's honestly not a bad list. The Daddy Yankee is a fun inclusion.
One thing, though: I was going through the full list of inductees (and, honestly, it's a great list--sure, with a few things that probably should be in ahead of what's there now). But my personal complaint is that they inducted the Kubelik/Chicago version of Pictures At An Exhibition. As someone who grew up with the (kinda ubiquitous) Szell/Cleveland performance, the Kubelik version...well, the Promenades feel a little sprint-y and the heaviest (Bydlo, Great Gate) or cheekiest (Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle) bits could be a little heavier. Just a preference, of course, and I guess they had to settle on some version of it, but I feel like Szell is a little more what I think of as Mussorgsky.

November 2023
Our November meeting started with a set of lively 4/4 marches and waltzes played by local trio, Calum MacAskill (accordion), Stevie Bremner (guitar) and Charlie Oag (drums). Next on stage and making his debut was 7 year old Kiro Brendon who treated us to Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on his fiddle – definitely a star in the making! Keeping things in the family sister Leela Brendon gave us a fine fiddle selection before she was joined by Carina Campbell, making a most welcome return to the club, to provide a fiddle duet including a slow air, waltz and the jig Murdo MacKenzie of Torridon.
Our next accordionist of the night was Peter Donnghale on his 2 row button box and he was followed by Carina Campbell on fiddle with a selection including the tunes Portree Bay and Angus MacKinnon. It was time then to welcome a visitor to the Club, Ian Morrison from Wishaw, who played two sets of lovely waltzes on his accordion.
Welcome now our guests for the evening, the Robert Nairn Duo. Robert played his 3 row Button Box accompanied by Ewen Henderson on drums and they commenced with a great set of 2/4 marches followed by Pipe Jigs and Gaelic Waltzes before Robert picked up his melodeon, and Ewen the piano accordion, for some more lively tunes.
After the interval our MC, Julia took over on her fiddle to play a variety of tunes including the beautiful Hills of Lorne. Julia was followed by long time member, Wendy Riva, who gave her usual competent selection of tunes on the fiddle leading up to another selection from the Club band of Calum, Stevie and Charlie, complemented by Carina on fiddle, who provided us with a set of 2/4 marches including a fine composition by Calum for his wife, Irene.
It was then time for our guests Robert and Ewen to take the floor and what a selection they played in a total of 13 sets ranging from Irish Jigs through marches, boston two steps, schottisches, Gaelic waltzes and reels and brought the evening to a rousing climax with a set of jigs for an Orcadian Strip the Willow. The band were thanked and wished a safe journey home as they set off down the road.
Next month's guests will be the Graeme Mackay Trio.

throwing another one into the ring — secondhand for Irene and Shifty bc I miss them oh so terribly
Who wants an AU? Me! I do!
The adage for this wedding, it seemed, was going to be everything borrowed, and something blue.
But just how else was one supposed to do it, when the groom was on occupation duty and the bride had been living out of a hospital bed for the last twelve months?
The flowers were wild, gathered that day by her friends and wrapped in one of Joan's good handkerchiefs and a blue ribbon that Ruth had taken off a shirt. The ring - secondhand, of course - had been purchased (he said) by Floyd Talbert, by ways and means that were perhaps better left unexplored. The dress came with Irene from England, a heavy parcel that sat on her lap for the whole journey, her hands protective around the twine -a loan from one of the nurses at the hospital, who said there wasn't any way she'd let Irene get married in a uniform.
"Well? What does it look like?" Maggie asked, too caught up in it all to realize it was the wrong question until Niamh hissed at her. "Will it match your shoes?"
Irene stared straight ahead, her fingers working at the package's twine. "It's…smooth. It has cap sleeves with lace edges, and celluloid buttons. I…I didn't think to ask her about the color."
She would never get back the vision in either eye. The doctors said the fragment had severed the optic nerve and the blood loss had been too terrible to save it. "Well, that's all right," Shifty'd said with one of his implacable smiles, when he'd gone to Colonel Sink to ask for permission. "Could have been worse than that. Anyway, she knew what I looked like before and I ain't changed all that much. And it seems I've got eyes good enough for the both of us, when it comes down to it."
Bob Sink certainly wasn't a romantic, but he also wasn't going to argue with the simple logic of that.
The shoes she'd brought didn't match, as it happened - they borrowed some from Marj's friend Frankie, black pumps with a bit of a heel that would look nicer in the photographs, and slipped the silver sixpence in for luck. No one who saw the pictures later would know the bride was blind - she was just another woman on her wedding day, smiling through closed eyes while her husband whispered in her ear that she looked lovely.
(Shifty didn't need to go home so badly, after that - points or no points, he had everything he wanted right here.)

STMPD Recommends Bubblegum Crisis Fanfiction: BakaGaijin30's Bubblegum Crisis Meiji
Look Ma, it's a historical AU!
Yeah, that's right, two posts in one night and I've got another one in me coming right down the pipeline that isn't a fanfic review. I read this one in a few sittings over today, all 84k words of it, and I gotta say... this one does what I otherwise would have thought impossible.
Because, let's be real here, is it really possible to extract Crisis from its cyberpunk setting without some damage being done? The only other AU like this I can think of is Sylia's Choice, and the framing device for that is a dream of all things, and the setting is Oriental Adventures from D&D 3E... and it's hardly a good fanfiction, anyway. Moving along...
Meiji is more a 2040-derived AU, mind you, but it has enough 2032 elements, and enough original setting material ripped shamelessly from Lone Wolf & Cub and Rurouni Kenshin to make up the difference; it really ends up being its own thing in most respects, especially in how the fight scenes play out. But we'll get to that in a bit.
Anyway, Linna Yamazaki is a geisha with martial arts training (purely for self-defense) who comes to the rapidly transforming Tokyo in a time when Japan is struggling to find its footing, beset by racist foreigners hell-bent on making it another colony. I bring this up because it's most of the politics of the fic, Glorious Nippon trying to prevent Westerners from fucking it over with blatant racism and warmongering... and who's better at warmongering, selling rifles to both sides of any colonial war, than Genom International? At least, according to Brian J. Mason.
So Linna manages to kill three Yakuza who kill one of her geisha buddies, and attracts the attention of Sylia, who buys her contract out so she can join the Sabers; so she and Priss (a half-American on her whaler dad's side) quickly begin a head-over-heels love affair; so Mason kidnaps Emperor Meiji and schemes to get his hands on the Boomer equivalent of this story, essentially a Lewis Machine Gun (which is used, alas, like once - the Sabers with AK-equivalents in this timeline would have been great but it's not to be) and the Sabers must get him back.
Simple stuff, but between the 'shoujo-ai' there is a lot of insane samurai swordfights, with the weapons of each Saber translated fairly well (Nene uses shurikens, a bow, and a naginata; Linna uses twin swords in a sort of flowing tai-chi-esque style; Priss just uses a cavalry-grade greatsword; Sylia uses a katana in various exotic fighting styles) into a bloody mess of slaughtering Yakuza and ninjas and other unkempt folk. Not a whole lot of gunplay, mind you, but the point is that the Sabers take a lot of wounds, and those wounds accumulate, and yet they keep going, more blood and guts are spilled at an ever-greater cost. It's really wonderfully fun to read, I mean it.
Characters are integrated well-enough: Galatea is a genuinely threatening villain this time around instead of whatever she was in 2040; Mackie, Henderson, and Nigel get to participate in later fight scenes; Sylvie and Anri get cameos as plain ol' prostitutes; even Irene shows up for like five minutes before getting stabbed, but is that any different from how she was treated in the original OVAs? If I have one complaint it's that Linna and Priss's relationship gets consummated very fast, and then Leon's a massive dick about it, to the point that the last chapter is literally him and Linna having a gun duel over Priss (not that anyone dies, mind you, but Leon's homophobia is a little over-the-top even in historical context, I dunno).
So! Read this one, even if the author abandoned yuri fanfic to find Christ (no really look at his author page). And I'll try to wrack my brain to see what I remember about the sequel, Crash '81 - I remember it having many more crossovers, much more yuri, and even more bonkers action and old-timey colonial racism, which is all that you can ask for in a fic in this environment, right?
Damn, now I want a more steampunk-y BGC AU. Give the Sabers 'repeating rifles' and clunky Tesla Cannons and suchlike. That'd be stupid fun, even if no one gives a shit about steampunk anymore.
