Douglas Iris
Douglas iris can interfere with grazing. California poppy, sky lupine and many favorite coastal wildflowers are annuals. Douglas iris, Iris douglasiana, blooms with the best of them as a perennial. It is persistent enough to be a noxious weed within rangelands. Of course, that is only because it competes with forageable vegetation. Douglas iris is actually tame enough for cultivated home…

Everywhere you look in the Garden it is abundantly clear that spring is here... and 10 photos can’t even begin to do it justice... but here is a taste, there is more in our Instagram story, and you really must come out and see it all for yourself! Pictured here and currently looking amazing: rose cone flower (Isopogon formosus) in Gondwana Circle, Puya chilensis and Puya alpestris in the Succulent Garden, magic dogwood (Cornus florida subsp. urbiniana) starting to flower adjacent to the Succulent Garden, the queen and king protea in the South Africa collection (Protea magnifica and Protea cynaroides), local favorites Douglas iris (Iris douglasiana) and western azalea (Rhododendron occidentale) flowering in the California Native Garden, sacred flower of the Andes (Cantua buxifolia) and Bomarea going crazy in the Andean Cloud Forest. #WILDflowers_SFBG #sfbotanicalgarden #isopogonformosus #puyachilensis #puyaalpestris #magicdogwood #cornusfloridaurbiniana #proteamagnifica #proteacynaroides #irisdouglasiana #rhododendronoccidentale #cantuabuxifolia #bomarea (at San Francisco Botanical Garden)

Goliath beetle- favourite bug right now? Tropical woodlice- favourite food? Giant huntsman- where would you most like to travel to? Honeybee- favourite flower?
Goliath Beetle: Favorite bug right now?
This is literally the hardest question of the lot. Hahahaha. If I can generalize to an entire order, then isopods. I don’t think I can be more specific, it’s just too hard.  They’re all sooo cute.
Tropical Woodlice: Favorite food?
Tacos!!!! Tacos tacos tacos.
Giant Huntsman: Where would you most like to travel to?
The UK, because castles, and also because there are castle-to-castle horseback riding tours. Heck yeah. (Also it’s one of the few places I’d like to travel where I think I could actually handle the temperature and weather.)
Honeybee: Favorite flower?
Hmm, that one is hard too. My favorites tend to be spring flowers, especially early spring flowers, but there are so many amazing ones.
My favorite garden flowers are lilac, wisteria, bleeding hearts, fritillaria, hellebore, snowdrop, lily of the valley, irises, and columbine.
My favorite native flowers are Pacific bleeding heart (Dicentra formosa), wild ginger (Asarum caudatum), woods rose (Rosa woodsii), Nootka rose (Rosa nutkana), Oregon iris (Iris tenax), Douglas iris (Iris douglasiana), bunchberry (Cornus unalaschkensis) and western lily (Lilium occidentale).
I also love any parasitic flowers like Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora), Pacific coralroot (Corallorhiza mertensiana) and snow plant (Sarcodes).
And any flowers that turn into delicious edible berries. >_>
Of indoor and tropical flowers, orchids are my favorite, especially miniature orchids and “weird” orchids.
My dad has enormous clumps of almost-black bearded irises in his front yard that my sister planted forever ago, and we’re going to divide it this fall and split it up among the three of us. It’s going to look great in my front “strip” garden that has black columbine and orange poppies.

Nurseries
Pacific Coast Iris, PCIs, "Pacificas", or PCHs (Pacific Coast iris hybrids) are now widely available on the West Coast from Iris societies, native plant societies, botanical gardens, university horticultural sales and commercial nurseries. Most nurseries are open to the public, although it is best to call ahead. They are also a source of mail order PCI seeds and plants. Some have special Open House dates with organized tours, displays and exhibits, like the Table of Native Edibles at Larner's Seeds in Bolinas.
