St. Patrick’s Day through the years
Every year since the Duke of Cambridge has been made Colonel of the Irish Guards, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge hands out Shamrocks for the troops at Calvary Barracks to pin to their uniform for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. This tradition was started by Queen Alexandra and was later taken on by the Queen Mother and until more recently, before Catherine took on the role, Princess Anne. It’s a staple in the Cambridge’s calendar, though this year the event may be in peril of cancellation to help stop the spread of coronavirus. As of yet, nothing has been cancelled. Either way, let’s take a look back at what Catherine wore.
2012
Tumblr media
2012 was the first year Kate handed out shamrocks and she fittingly wore the color green. This green coat is by Emilia Wickstead and the way the pleats drape is a dream. Her rich brown Emmy London and Lock and Co hat complemented this green beautifully.
Tumblr media
Kate’s gold shamrock brooch with the singular emerald in the middle is by Cartier and owned by the Irish Guards; it was loaned to Kate for the occasion She also accessorized with her oval green amethyst earrings from Kiki McDonough, a Christmas present from Will, and her diamond by the yard Tiffany and Co bracelet.
Tumblr media
2013
Tumblr media
Catherine was very pregnant with Prince George in 2013 but she still surprised us with a rewear. Instead of wearing this green Emilia Wickstead piece as a coatdress, she ditched the belt and wore it as a true coat over a black turtle neck and black tights. Keeping with the back theme, she wore a black fascinator by Lock and Co, black suede pumps by Episode, and black gloves by Cornelia James.
Tumblr media
Pinned to her lapel once again is the Irish Guards gold Cartier brooch. Other than that, her jewelry was simple; she wore unidentified diamond and emerald earrings.
2014
Tumblr media
In 2014 Kate delivered a new coat to us in, unsurprisingly, the color green. This piece is by Hobbs and it’s belted with a belt that remains unidentified to this day. That fun green hat is by Gina Foster. The shoes and clutch are both by Emmy London and are not green but in fact a very dark gray--I believe it’s actually called carbon gray.
Tumblr media
Kate accessories the look with her two tone Tissot watch, her cushion cut green amethyst drop earrings from Kiki McDonough, and the Irish Guards Cartier Gold Shamrock brooch (I swear its hiding behind those real shamrocks).
2015
Tumblr media
I think this is the only year Kate wore something other than green! There isn’t even a bit of green in sight except those shamrocks. While pregnant with Princess Charlotte Kate chose a coat by Catherine Walker and the same shoes and hat from 2012: Emmy heels and Lock and Co hat. She’s also holding a brown Emmy clutch while wearing brown Cornelia James gloves.
Tumblr media
For earrings she chose her citrine tear drop earrings from Kiki McDonough and paired it with the Irish Guard’s gold Cartier Shamrock brooch.
2017
Tumblr media
Kate did not hand out the Shamrocks in 2016 so we’re just right ahead into 2017 and this might be my favorite look yet. Kate debuted a Catherine Walker coat, obviously in green, with green velvet cuffs, pocket flaps, and collar--peeking out of her cuffs is her Cartier watch. Her shoes are Emmy, a different style from previous years as the toe is pointed and there is no platform. Kate had a clutch by Etui--it was a black leather clutch but she was barely pictured with it. Will and Kate jetted off to start their Paris visit after this event and she was pictured holding it during their arrival also.
Tumblr media
The hat is Sylvia Fletcher for Lock and Co, her earrings are Monica Vinader, and again, she’s wearing the Irish Guards gold shamrock brooch.
2018
Tumblr media
Catherine was very pregnant with Prince Louis and chose this green Catherine Walker coat she debuted earlier in the year while visiting Sweden. The collar and cuffs are a lovely black faux fur while her gloves are Cornelia James and her sturdy block heels are a favorite by Tod’s.
Tumblr media
Affixed to the fur collar is the Irish Guards shamrock brooch. Kate is also rewearing her Gina Foster hat with her green tourmaline and green amethyst earrings from Kiki McDonough, earrings which were a gift from Will on the occasion of Charlotte’s birth.
2019
Tumblr media
2019 brought us Kate’s first Alexander McQueen coat for St. Patrick’s day and no surprises, it’s green. Her shoes are a block heel in black suede byGianvito Rossi and the green hat is thought to be Lock and Co. Again, gloves are thought to be Cornelia James.
Tumblr media
As usual, Kate is wearing the Irish Guard’s gold Cartier shamrock brooch and her own green tourmaline and green amethyst Kiki McDonough earrings which were a gift from William on the occasion of Charlotte’s birth.
That’s all for St. Patrick’s day through the years! As of posting this the parade is scheduled to continue as usual on Sunday but I’m sure the government is monitoring the situation closely and would only cancel if they felt continuing as planned would be a detriment to public health.

British wedding traditions you should know before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding
Every culture has its own unique set of traditions for the big day and the Brits are no exception.
Britain’s royal family exemplifies tradition and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s May 19 wedding will be the wedding of the year, filled with some well-known and some not so well-known British customs.
Here are a few aspects of a traditional British wedding experience that differ from standard practice in the U.S.
British wedding traditions
Bachelor and bachelorette parties have different names
In the U.K. a bachelor party is known as a “stag do,” and a bachelorette party is called a “hen do” or hen party.. Both are usually held over an entire weekend — sometimes even longer. Kate Middleton’s hen do was top secret, but for her sister Pippa Middleton’s hen do, the duchess of Cambridge reportedly took part in a weekend of skiing in the Alps.
Wedding breakfasts
Instead of a Saturday night formal affair, many British weddings are usually held in the morning, with the first meal that follows often called “wedding breakfast” – though it may be a lunch or a dinner.
Prince Harry and Markle’s wedding will begin at noon local time, or 7 a.m. ET, at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. After the carriage procession, the newlyweds will attend a reception where they will rejoin their wedding guests. Harry and Markle are expected to continue celebrating their marriage at an evening reception hosted by Harry’s father, Prince Charles, for close friends and family, which is not open to the public.

It’s common tradition for all women attending a British wedding to accessorize their dress with a hat or a fascinator, a decorative headdress in place of a hat. They’ll be worn throughout the entire ceremony and usually for an afternoon reception, but will be taken off during dinner or in the evenings.

Morning suits for the gents
In many British weddings, the men traditionally sport morning suits instead of a tuxedo. A morning suit is traditional British daytime formal dress consisting of a three-piece suit including a morning coat with tails, a waistcoat and trousers.

Only men tend to make speeches at dinner
The father of the bride, the best man and the groom are typically the ones to give speeches at a British wedding, not the maid of honor. The whole point of the speeches is usually to embarrass the newlyweds as much as possible.
Here comes the bride … first
The big reveal you often see in Hollywood films where the bride finally emerges last in the procession doesn’t happen in the U.K. The bride typically walks down the aisle first –- and her bridesmaids will walk behind her, usually to hold the train of the dress.

Royal family wedding traditions
There is always myrtle in the bride’s bouquet — a tradition dating back to Queen Victoria. It’s believed that a spring of myrtle in all royal bridal bouquets are cut from the same myrtle shrub that grows in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, a favorite retreat of Queen Victoria’s.

Wedding bands contain Welsh gold
All royal wedding bands typically contain Welsh gold – a tradition beginning in 1923 with the Queen Mother. Welsh gold is so rare it can be valued up to 30 times more than standard gold. Welsh gold has a history of more than 2,000 years since the time of the Romans.
The wedding cake is typically made of fruit
While there are no hard and fast rules on wedding cake, most British weddings have fruitcake. Prince William and Princess Kate served two cakes on their wedding day in 2011, a traditional eight-tier fruit cake created by chef Fiona Cairns and a chocolate biscuit cake from a Buckingham Palace recipe that was a favorite of William’s as a child and also enjoyed by Queen Elizabeth.
Some couples even opt for pork pie wedding cakes.

Harry, 33, and Markle, 36, have broken with tradition in this regard, commissioning pastry chef Claire Ptak of London’s Violet Bakery to create a lemon elderflower cake with buttercream icing and fresh flowers as decorations, according to Kensington Palace.
The Royal Marriages Act 1772 is repealed — but there are still rules
The British government repealed legislation that previously dictated certain terms over royal marriages. With the Succession of the Crown Act of 2013, certain restrictions were changed, such as not allowing gender to decide the hierarchy of the throne. (Princess Charlotte, for example, will not be pushed further down the line of succession if the Kate’s next child is a boy).
Some rules, however, remain. According to the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013, the first six people in line to the throne must obtain the consent of the queen before marrying.
The queen gave her consent for Harry and Markle’s marriage on March 14. The consent is announced and marked with a letter to the Privy Council, the group of advisers to the Sovereign. Heirs to the throne may also marry a Roman Catholic – something previously not allowed. However, Roman Catholics currently cannot ascend to the throne themselves as the monarch is the head of the Church of England.
