I wanted to try something a wee bit different for @ironqrowweek this year, and the prompt 'Early Mornings/Late Nights' got me thinking about how much I enjoy drawing skies. So I did some experimenting and had a go at comic panels and some complicated gradients, and I really enjoy the results!

Hello everyone! Your friendly neighbourhood moderators here to let you know the prompts for this year’s Ironqrow Week, a week of celebration for the ship of Ironwood and Qrow! This year, we’ll be hosting during the third week of August, from August 14th to August 20th.

We worked hard on these prompts and so we hope you enjoy them all. Free free to let us know what you think in the replies or in our ask box. Get excited! We can’t WAIT to see what you come up with. It's been a little while since I last mentioned them, so here's your friendly reminder that I have Ironqrow zines for sale!

The physical zines are A5 size and printed on slightly glossy silk paper, and those are available from my online shop over on Storenvy. If digital is more your speed (say, you don't feel like paying for postage), then you can get the pdf edition from my Gumroad page!

Also, as a limited time offer, for the rest of May all the Ironwood and Ironqrow prints in my online shop are going to be $5 each, down from my usual online price for A5 prints of $7!

I need to make some room for new stock (especially with @ironqrowweek running again in August, meaning I'll probably be drawing these disasters a bunch more times), and so I won't be reprinting most of these when the last few copies sell out. Get them before they're gone!

Ironqrow Week Day 3: Stormy Weather

Summary: Hours after the Fall of Beacon, Qrow swings by to check on James before the general must return to Atlas. A storm is brewing as tensions are running high with Ozpin missing and the maiden powers stolen. James is slowly beginning his descent into fear and distrust, leaving it up to Qrow to snap him out of it. James asks Qrow to come back to Atlas with him, but Qrow knows he has to refuse.  

Notes: In this fic, I’m using @oddlyhale headcanon for James semblance since tbh his canon one is a little disappointing. So James’ semblance is now something they called Resistance: “James has the ability to manifest hordes of unbreakable barbed wires around him. It’s a manifestation of his spite and vulnerability, which works as a defense mechanism. While he does have control over them, the wires also have a mind of their own. They work to protect him at all costs. If provoked, they won’t hesitate to slice those who mean to harm James or defy him. However, Resistance can by bypassed if James has hope/trust in the individual approaching him(Qrow or Winter for example). (This is just loosely based on their idea as we had discussed it on twitter, but for more in depth details on how it works, check out their tumblr.)

Qrow was flying over the streets of Vale. Grimm were still crawling all over the school and the city. They really had their work cut out for them. After Ruby’s stunt with the wyvern, the chaos had subsided for a bit. Salem’s forces had disappeared, leaving behind the wreckage and the hordes of Grimm being attracted by the amounts of fear and hopelessness that people were radiating. Glynda and the remaining professors were organizing teams to take down the remaining Grimm, but everyone was running on empty. 

He would have helped Glynda, but Ruby and Yang had taken priority and now he was worried about James. He hadn’t seen or heard from James since he left him and Glynda to find Ruby. When Qrow checked in with Glynda, she said that after the wyvern had been stopped, James left to check in on the Atlas students. But after that, he hadn’t checked back in with her. Qrow knew that was a sure sign that James was withdrawing into himself and putting back up those walls of his. 

Things would get messy if Oz’s circle fell apart the moment he was gone. If they wanted to defeat Salem, they needed to work together not be divided. Qrow spotted the remainder of the Atlesian fleet. He glided through the air and transformed back into himself while landing on top the ship in the middle of the formation. 

“Stop. Hands up.”

Qrow turned around with a smirk. Two Atlesian soliders stood with their guns raised. He threw his hands up in a sarcastic motion as he flashed his huntsman license at them.

“I’m here to see your general. So would you do me a favor and bring me to him.”

The two soldiers looked at each other and back to Qrow. He sighed. He wasn’t in the mood to deal with Dumbass One and Two. Qrow debated on just taking them out like he did with Winter’s Atlesian Knight guards. Wouldn’t be as fun as sticking it to the Ice Queen, but he needed to get to James fast. 

“General Ironwood isn’t taking any visitors right now.” said Dumbass One

Qrow rolled his eyes as Dumbass Two chimed in, “I don’t know how you got up here, but you need to leave.”

Qrow pulled out Harbringer. “You can either take me to Ironwood or I can take you out.”

Dumbass One and Two aimed at Qrow, who shrugged and began to charge forward. He swiftly dodged the bullets racing towards him.

“Qrow!”

Qrow paused to see James Ironwood, with his wires weaving around his entire body, signaling Resistance was activated.

“Stand down.”

“But sir, he was-”

The wires lashed out, cracking like a whip, towards the soldier that approached him. Qrow frowned as the soldiers started backing far away from the man, wires whipping out. But James seemingly took no notice or just didn’t care. His eyes were locked onto Qrow.

James waved the two soldiers away as he walked towards Qrow. He was right, James was not in a good state. He rarely let Resistance be active in the general public. James normally only summoned his wires to intimidate his enemies or if he was truly feeling vulnerable and on the defense. But he would never let others know that, so Qrow was beginning to get worried.

“What are you doing here?”

“Checking in on you, Jimmy. You weren’t going to leave without saying goodbye, were you?”

James sighed. His wires were snaking around his arms and head. “No, no. I’ve just been busy dealing with everything.”

Qrow reached out to put a hand on his cheek, wires gently backing away from him. James shuddered and leaned into the touch. “You’re not alone in this fight James. Let me help you.”

Thunder rumbled in the distance. Dark clouds were slowly becoming abundant in the sky. Qrow stepped forward, cupping James’ face and pulled him in for a kiss. James relaxed into Qrow, wires enveloping them both then disappearing. Qrow slowly pulled back with a lazy smile. His eyes scanning James’ face. The man looked exhausted. It was only hours ago that he survived an airship crash. And now from what Qrow could discern, he had to deal with not only Atlas’ council, but the fact that the last thing Remnant saw was Atlas tech attacking innocent people.

James tugged on Qrow’s hand. “Let’s go inside and talk.”

James led Qrow to his quarters on the airship. Specialists and pilots walked past them, some stopping to give him reports and letting him know that the Council was again trying to contact him. He gave them a brisk nod and began walking faster to his quarters.

“Council giving you trouble?”

“When are they not?”

They shared a brief laugh as they stepped into his room. James shut the door behind him as Qrow flopped on his bed. He let out an amused huff and sat down next to him.

“How are your students?”

“Shaken and traumatized. They shouldn’t have been in a battle like this at their age. But some are keeping strong. Although I wish they didn’t have to be.”

Qrow hummed. “There wasn’t much of choice, really. It was fight or run, and some chose to fight

“That’s what the Atlesian Knights were for. To keep them away from the battlefield. So we didn’t have to keep training children to fight in a war.”

James’ hand clenched. Qrow sat up and grabbed his other hand.

“Now the Council is demanding to know how this happened.”

“How did this happen, James. I didn’t peg Torchwick as a tech wiz.”

James growled. “It wasn’t him. It has to be someone who knows Atlesian tech.”

“An inside job?”

“I’m not sure. I don’t know who to trust anymore.”

Resistance activated as James’ thoughts started spiraling. He needed to figure out who had hacked his army. He would never forget the sight of that black queen symbol flashing in his face as his ship went down. It was like Salem was there with him, slowly infecting everything he had built to stop her. Pulling them apart and tossing them aside like toys. Telling him that nothing he does will ever be enough to take her down. Beacon would fall and it would be because of him. And it did. And his army played a part in it.

And to make everything worse, someone inside of his ranks had to be the culprit. Hacking Atlesian tech wasn’t easy. A certain scientist had made sure of that. And he was dead. So the only answer left was that someone on the inside had caused all this chaos. But then who does he trust enough to help him investigate? Most likely that would be another problem he had to solve on his own. He wasn’t sure how much more weight he could take on upon his shoulders. Yet, if he didn’t, Atlas would surely fall.

Qrow gripped him by the shoulders, an abundance of wires was starting to surround both of them. If anyone were to walk in, it would have seemed like an entire thicket of thorns was trying to envelop the room. Good, keep them out. They couldn’t be trusted anyway. The only person he could trust to protect Atlas was himself.

The cacoon of wires grew tighter and thicker. Light flashed through the room and a loud boom echoed. James jolted, eyes wild with fear.

“James, James. It’s okay. We’ll get through this together.”

James turned towards Qrow, his eyes growing dull. “How are we going to do this without Oz.”

“I-I don’t know, but we can’t give up.”

Suddenly James sprung up, wires retraching but some still lazily wrapping themselves around his arms. “Come back to Atlas with me.”

Qrow paused. “Join you in Atlas?”

James nodded, almost feverishly. “With you there, we can work together to defeat Salem. And of course, I just want you to be with me.”

Qrow frowned. He would love nothing more than to be with James. But Ruby was still unconcious and Yang had just lost her arm. He couldn’t just leave Tai. He wouldn’t just leave his family like his sister. And yet, he also wanted to help support James.

Qrow was highly aware of the fact that Atlas would dump all its problems onto James to solve. As strong as James’ will was, he was still vulnerable to breaking under all that weight. But there was also the matter of figuring out how Cinder got past all of them. Especially since she had seemingly fooled Lionheart as well. Qrow knew that his next move should be to go to Mistral and make sure Lionheart was okay.

“James, you know I would love to join you in Atlas but-”

“You won’t”

Qrow sighed. “I gotta take care of my family here and I need to follow up on any leads that can tell us anything about Cinder.”

James nodded, turning away from Qrow, more wires manifesting and wrapping themselves around him. Qrow tentatively reached out his hand, expecting Resistance to lash out, protecting James. Yet, to his surprise, they still retracted as he drew nearer. Qrow wrapped his arms around James’ waist and buried his head into his shoulders. James brushed Qrow’s hand and relaxed into the embrace. They stayed like that, watching the thunderstorm rage on outside. Slowly Resistance disappeared and Qrow manuvered them both to the bed.

“I have to go.”

“I know.”

“Leave the window open for me in Atlas.”

“I always do.”

Qrow walked out, not looking back because he didn’t want to make this any harder than it already was.

But if he did look back, he would have seen a wistful smile and blue eyes that already called for him to come back.
