Heats and Ruts represent a biological period of time in which the desire for mating and the fertility rate both increase; heat is the term often used for the one being penetrated or bred, and rut is the term often used for the one penetrating or breeding the other. 193. The Changing Man, by Tomi Oyemakinde

Owned: No, library Page count: 382 My summary: Ife is a scholarship student at the prestigious Nithercott Academy - and she's not dealing with the pressure of being one of the few working-class Black kids in school. But something strange is afoot at the school. Kids are disappearing, and either they come back...different, or they don't come back at all. With outcast Bee and brother of one of the missing Ben at her side, can Ife solve the mystery of the Changing Man? My rating: 3.5/5 My commentary:

I was expecting this one to be a bit more...horror, than it was. That's not a criticism, it was just a surprise. Urban legends and cryptids are an interest of mine, so this story about the 'Changing Man', a being that supposedly lurks around Nithercott and takes lonely kids, is right up my alley. I found it to be really fun, honestly, if a little weird at times. But I'd prefer weird and fun to polished and boring. It was a good read!

Ife, our protagonist, is one of those classic heroines of this sort of story. She's struggling under pressure from both her parents, who expect great things from her, and the school, which might expel her if her grades are poor. She also feels disconnected from her home and friends - an attempt to smuggle herself out to see her best friend fails, and she's increasingly isolated as one of the only Black kids in a sea of white posh kids. If you've ever been a lonely teenager (which, let's be real, most of us have) you will relate to Ife. She's isolated, awkward, and troubled even before the Changing Man nonsense happened. And I find her to be a really credible protagonist. She's in over her head, and has a lot of moments where she's overwhelmed or breaking down over everything she's seen and done. She makes mistakes and further alienates herself from the kids that would naturally be her allies. But she keeps going, she keeps fighting, she doesn't back down, because she sees an injustice and she can't give it up. I loved her a lot, even if her narration was a little selfconsciously teenagery at times, the narrative leaning on a few teen cliches to characterise her in the earlier parts.

I also really liked her friends. Ben is the brother of missing kid Leon who bears a lot of guilt over Leon's disappearance. He's a weird kid, a bit of a delinquent but not a bad person, and adds a sort of quirky charm to the proceedings. Bee, meanwhile, is an awkward ambiguously-autistic nerd who finds herself alone because other people often find her offputting, and she latches onto other social outcasts to befriend out of a sense of desperation. They're both credible teens, and despite how I'm describing them here, they don't really fall into any of the classic Teen Story stereotypes. Sure, Bee is an awkward nerd, but her love of the school's history and self-awareness about Ife being cold to her at first elevate her. Ben is also complicated by his love for his brother and his big heart. They make a really cute trio!

Finally, let's talk about the Changing Man. Not the alien cryptid creature that forms the centre of this story, but the idea of change as a whole. Ife is worried that, being at the Academy and separated from her old friends, they will change without her and grow to not like her. She's also worried that she will change, and be left behind. The kids who disappear come back as pod people who act exactly as they are supposed to, a change that is clearly unnatural. Change is a huge theme, and the shapeshifters preying on the kids just underscore the point. Change is inevitable, and not necessarily to be feared, but too much change too quickly can be a red flag. The messaging is obvious, but not so on the nose that it gets in the way of the story, which I liked. Overall, it was a good story! I'm glad I picked it up.

Next, the pharmacist in a bunker beneath the world is facing a moral dilemma.

Alrighty then I'm here to share another 13 Sentinels fic I'm working on, this is the opening of my fourth anniversary fic, I hope you all enjoy this sneak peek.

Four years was a shockingly short amount of time. Or maybe it only felt that way when you spent those four years working alongside fourteen other teens/young adults to reforge humanity.

In any case, it was a bit of a reality check for the Compatibles when Tomi stood up from the cafeteria table one morning and announced the fourth anniversary of their daring escape from the pods was coming up and they needed to prepare for the anniversary celebration.

"Oh jeez is that coming up!?" Natsuno asked, shocked. "It completely snuck up on me again."

"No kidding, I'm still recovering from our third anniversary." Nenji agreed while absentmindedly rubbing the back of his neck.

Shu shot him an incredulous look. "You're recovering? Dude you got to make kid number two after that party! I on the other hand got my priceless possession stolen by the supposed love of my life!"

Yuki, who had been spoon feeding Konatsu at the time, rolled her eyes and looked over at Shu. "For the last time Shu, that was my letterman jacket you took, not the other way around.”

Shu gave a pout that'd give Konatsu a run for her money. "My statement is still technically true."

Takatoshi shook his head. "For shame Amiguchi, I'd expect better than theft and lying from a citizen of Japan."

Tsukasa, who was sitting right next to Takatoshi (only because they'd been denied access to his lap) smirked as they made a show of buttoning up the oversized jacket they were wearing, which practically screamed "property of Takatoshi Hijiyama." Takatoshi, with heroic willpower, managed not to look at his partner. He did fail to hide the blush that enveloped his whole face however.

Ei couldn't help but snort, startling several people as his cryptid level cloaking tended to make everyone forget he was there. It also startled Iori, who had been using his shoulder as a pillow and was now wide awake.

"Morning Sleepyhead." Ei murmured as he planted a kiss on her forehead.

Iori, despite still being half asleep, gave a wide smile as she responded sleepily with: "Mornin' Ei." Before letting out a yawn.

Juro, who was sitting close by, chuckled as he said. "Welcome back to the land of the living Iori, you really need to get more rest, believe it or not, work can wait you know."

"Actually I-"

"You're one to talk Juro." Megumi teased, playfully nudging him. "Unless I'm mistaken, you were also up at an ungodly hour last night, I had to carry you back to bed, again. Keep it up and I'll start to think you just like me carrying you."

Juro's face flushed. “Well, I’m not, not saying that…”

“Erm, Juro-kun I was actually hoping to ask you-”

Ryoko cut in. "Juro-kun makes a good point, I just wish some people could get that idea through their thick skulls as well as you have." She looked pointedly at Renya as she said this.

"Calm down Ryoko-san, I'm merely going through our schedule for the next few weeks so we can start fitting preparation time in-between our normal duties." Renya responded crisply while typing away at a hologram.

"Uh huh, and what was your excuse yesterday?"

"... No comment." Renya replied, closing the hologram.

“Guys, I really want to say something!”

“What’s wrong Iori-chan?”

Despite her distress, Iori couldn’t help but smile at Keitaro’s affectionate nickname for her, a byproduct of him seeing her as an older version of his sister Chihiro. Which, she mused, wasn’t far off from the truth.

“I just have something I want to tell everyone but- oh. It’s probably not important…”

“Nonsense Iori-chan, anything concerning you is important, we’ll get their attention. I know just who to ask!”

“Guys I can’t believe I’m the one saying this but can we please focus?” Tomi begged.

But her pleas were met on deaf ears, as the group’s overlapping conversations grew louder and louder.

That is until a piercing whistle suddenly blew out, startling everyone at the table.

“Now if we’re all quite done, Keitaro-san has something to say.” Tamao politely informed the previously rambunctious group.

Keitaro clapped his hands together (after taking his fingers out of his ears) and corrected Tamao. “Actually it’s Iori who has something to say, Iori-chan?”

Iori blanched as she stood up. “R-right. Hi everyone, I just- well I wanted to um…” Iori trailed off, her problem already sounding stupid now that she was about to say it out loud.

Shu and Juro shot each other a look, the last time they saw that specific look on her face… was back when the Dream Team was still discussing their shared memories.

"Iori-san, did you have a nightmare?" Shu asked, concern evident in his voice.

Iori took a breath in, bracing herself for mockery: "Yeah, I did. A really bad one, it… well it got me thinking."

Iori bit her lip, still waiting for someone to crack a joke, or snicker, or at the least roll their eyes.

But instead all she heard were murmurs of concern, sympathetic comments and kind words, and after a moment she realized she wasn't being fair to her friends. Sure they were no stranger to poking fun at each other, but when someone had a genuine problem, the group took it as seriously as literal armageddon. (And she had seen how seriously they had all taken it).

"Thank you guys." Iori responded with deep gratitude, "If it's alright with you all, I'd like to share what it was about because it got me thinking, and I really want to discuss it with you all."

Everyone's eyes went to Renya, who was typing away at his pad. "Yes I believe we'll all have time to listen to and discuss your dream Fuyusaka-san, let me just finish the necessary schedule adjustments-"

A voice suddenly cut in over the intercoms. "All of us, eh captain?"

Renya let out a long suffering sigh. "Yes, everyone can come Izumi, including you."

"Sweeeeeet, thanks boss man!" He said, suddenly a flickering hologram of his Kyuta form that was projected right between Juro and Megumi. He mouthed something to Juro that looked like "No gross couple stuff during this presentation guys" which resulted in them trying, and of course failing, to shove him.

Finally, now that everyone had settled in, Iori cleared her throat "My nightmare begins on that day, nearly four years ago now…"

Summer Presents

Calm chaos.

A pretty accurate word to describe the current event going on; nice and quick.

A few weeks back, Tommy proposed a gift exchange. Despite the fact it was kinda random, the Science Team agreed— paying absolutely no mind to the fact it was the middle of June. Not usually a time for gifts, but it doesn’t hurt. Who says it has to wait for holidays or celebrations? So, they all went about figuring out what to get their person as a gift— seeing as Tommy handed out the ‘who was gifting who’ stuff. Tommy was still participating, though. It was.. kind of messy, but at this point, what wasn’t with the Science Team? Coordinated chaos, really.

Gordon had gotten Benrey as his person, because of course he did. He had spent a while dwelling on what to get the little.. uhh,— what would one call Benrey? Alien? Cryptid?? Eldritch creature??.. Whatever—. He didn’t want to go for the obvious video game, or something— he wanted to try and go a bit deeper. Get him something unique, y’know? Not to say a video game isn’t unique, but, like, something not surface level? To like- try and show he actually put thought into it, y’know? Not like getting someone a really surface level gift, like— like getting the art kid a sketchbook every year. No, he wanted it to be special— cuz everyone knew Benrey gamed. That was super obvious— so he.. yeah. Frankly, he didn’t know why he cared so much at all. It was Benrey of all people, why was he putting in so much effort anyways?-

..But he had found a sword.

Blade dulled, just something to decorate the home, but it was still a real sword. He figured there was no harm in it, seeing as the blade wasn’t sharpened and he’s pretty sure none of the team had a damn whetstone on hand. So, he ended up purchasing it— obtaining it a few days before the gift exchange. Unique enough, and he’d imagine Benrey would enjoy something ‘dangerous’. He’d probably say it was right out of a video game, or something— something like he always did.

As for the exchange itself;

Bubby had gotten assigned Coomer, and Coomer had gotten assigned Gordon. Gordon had gotten assigned Benrey, as we know, and Benrey had gotten assigned Tommy. And, finally, Tommy had gotten assigned Bubby. The result of this was.. uhm, interesting, to really say the least.

Bubby ended up getting Coomer a whole punching bag, which Coomer gladly accepted with glee— claiming it’d be ‘nice to freshen up’. Along with that came a mini ‘Desktop Boxing’ thing? Which Coomer excitedly opened and started playing with on the counter while everyone else kept exchanging gifts.

Coomer ended up getting Gordon ‘Super Punch-Out!! for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System’. He accepted it, of course— figured it’d be fun to try out, at least.

Benrey ended up getting Tommy some Beyblade stuff— which Tommy excitedly expressed the name of. Something something Tamara Tomy? Gordon couldn’t really remember. Benrey handed it over with.. far too wide of a grin, claiming it was gained ‘110% via legal means, bro.’ Meaning it likely, hell— no, it *definitely* wasn’t gained via legal means, which.. checked out for Benrey. Upon learning how much stuff costed once they got out of Black Mesa, he’d commonly noclip around to steal stuff; something Gordon had to deal with nearly anytime he went out with him. Bubby agreed with this wholeheartedly and tried to do the same, but Coomer managed to convince him out of it. Instead, Bubby would just ask Benrey to steal stuff *for* him— which always ended up happening when Benrey tagged along with any of the Science Team on their outings. It was.. hellish.

Tommy got Bubby a whole handful of astronomy books— a few being interactive, which.. admittedly seemed kinda cool, honestly. Bubby seemed relatively excited about it, too, but quickly played it off as he wasn’t— giving a curt ‘Thanks’ as he fiddled with one of the interactive bits on one. Sure, he probably already knew all the info in there, anyways— but it’s fun.

.. and then Gordon had gotten Benrey a sword. A straight up sword. Honestly, he felt kinda embarrassed about it now— like he went over the top? But seeing Benrey’s confused expression light up into one of sheer excitement as a flurry of yellow to orange sweet voice flew out of his mouth made his heart stutter; so, worth it. Confusing, but worth it. Hauling the sword overhead as he cackled, somewhat.. menacingly, he’d soon scramble to get it out of the sheathe— babbling idle, cackled noises as he did.

“Oh, god, be careful with that-“

Muttering as he rushed forward to stop the other from nearly slicing off someone’s head, Gordon would soon firmly grasp Benrey’s shoulders. “You’re gonna cut someone’s head off—“

“.. isn’t that what it’s for?” Head tilting to the side, he’d continue to slooowly pull the sword from it’s sheathe.

“God— no- no-“ Quickly placing a hand atop Benrey’s with an exasperated wheeze, he’d crack a nervous smile, “It’s— the blade on this one isn’t sharpened, this one’s for decoration-“

“that can change.”

As Benrey began to grin, Gordon would only cackle out more nervous wheezes.

“Uhm. No? No that should not change? I mean- it can— but it shouldn’t?” Sputtering, he’d lift a hand to hold his swirling head— he wasn’t really that great with adrenaline, still. “I don’t want to be an accomplice to murder, dear god-“

Coomer would interject from the sidelines on the couch where he and Bubby were seated, “It would do nothing to your ever growing kill count, Gordon!”

“what about world domination? feetman, second in hand to world domination?”

Pausing, he’d slowly look back down to Benrey who had that wide ass grin of his again; he half hated how it made his heart stutter, and not from fear. He knew it wasn’t from fear. It never was anymore— despite how.. kinda infuriating that was? But not actually infuriating? It was mainly confusing. By mainly, he moreso means entirely. But now wasn’t really the time to linger on that feeling with Benrey staring up at him— grinning with blank eyes.

“Excuse— excuse me??”

“what if i use it for world domination, huh? who’s gonna stop a guy with a sword.”

Blearily, he’d blink. “Someone with a gun?”

“i’ll eat the bullets.”

“Nn— no, Benrey- no.”

Grinning wider, he’d lightly wriggle against Gordon’s grip— hands still securely holding the sword.

“why noooot?”

“Because— you-?? Please-?”

“.. your reason is ‘please’?”

“Uh,” With a slight pause, he’d gulp. “Yeah, sure. Uhm,.. pretty please?” He felt silly pleading, but oh well. It seemed to work,.. sometimes.

Seeming to think it over, he’d then give a woeful sigh— dramatically placing a hand to his forehead as he shifted to hold the sheath with one hand.

“guess i can’t argue if you ask so nice. gotta reward good behaviour from gordon rudeman, or else he’ll never learn.”

Frowning at the name, albeit not.. really upset, his expression would soften a bit at the grin Benrey gave him again after.

“Can you dumbasses sit down.” Spitting from the couch, Bubby had crossed his arms— one of which Coomer was patting in a comforting fashion.

“Now, now, Bubby— they’re great entertainment! Ah, young love.”

Quickly feeling his cheeks heat up, Gordon would soon give a weak sigh. Quickly, he’d to sit back down wordlessly, leaving Benrey ‘on stage’, and nearly making him fall over from the lack of contact. After a small second, and after regaining his balance, he’d seem to mumble something to himself. Soon followed by sitting down in his own seat again— hugging the sword to his chest.

They carried on with the gift exchange and the small ‘party’ they had planned after, and Benrey didn’t let go of the sword once.

Benrey would just have to do world domination later, when Gordon wasn’t there to.. uh, pout.. at him, yeah. Silly Gordo, getting in the way. Not for long, though, nuh-uh. Not when he’d be co-owner of world domination, yeah. He’d convince him. They could, like, co-op it. Uh-huh.

What would be the slender brothers' reactions to a tomie-like specimen?

If I could describe to you the scream of joy I had in my head or the swiftness to which it was replaced by sadness I would.

I love Junji Ito! Unfortunately I haven’t read any of the Tomie manga yet. I tried perusing the Wikipedia page but I don’t think it gave me enough info to work with for a full headcanon post. But if you just want my general thoughts:

Are her seduction powers psychic? Because if so I wouldn’t see them working on a slenderbeing since they have amazing psychic abilities.

I could see Offender being into trying to “seduce the seductress” and focusing his attention on a Tomie to try and get her into bed at the expense of other potential lovers. But I doubt he would be driven crazy by desire.

If she “behaved” in cryptid society and didn’t cause any chaos then I feel like they would treat a Tomie like any other cryptid and judge her based on her personality (which I didn’t get a lot of info on in the wiki) and intentions.

If she was dedicated to making trouble through spree-killing or getting a lot of cryptids to fight to the death or go crazy over her then I can’t see any of the brothers seeing her as anything but a nuisance to the peaceful functioning of cryptid society.

(Besides Offender who finds the whole thing amusing. Until someone he knows is affected of course. )

If she can’t live peacefully in cryptid society then she dies. The wiki says she is unable to be killed but I don’t think any of the people in the mangas had access to magic soooo

Background:

yves is a vampire-turned succubus that is only 203 years young. she often comes off as a snob to people that observe her due to her strong expressions; but once they do get to converse with her their minds immediately change (totally not because yves tweaked her personality against what they thought she was) her mom was a succubus who had her eyes locked on a certain fair man; for someone that was swooned over by many it was odd that her mother eyed the one that was only half interested. you can guess how that story ended. even though her father was a vampire. for some reason her mother’s genes pretty much dominated her “"dna”“. sure she got irritated at the sun but she almost never had any urges to drink someone’s blood. or maybe that was part of her trying to act like a normal kid. she had to endure it either way, until it was her graduation day and her father decides turning her into a vampire would be the greatest gift of all. that was also the day her parents got crucified by civilians after they found out they were what they were. that’s when yves sought to seek shelter in jeonseol.

any creature will do, someone that knows about her weakness which is being called by her real name. it would be even more nice if this muse would be a rival of some sort- someone who will have bad terms with yves and obviously uses her weakness against her– but doesn’t spread it because yves knows of their own weakness as well?

The Un-Greeter

Is a guest in your premiere Wall Purchasing Establishment... unruly. Are they, breaking the pleasantness of even a Walmart? The Staff may call the Un-Greeter on them.

[Gather around, for it is safe to discuss here. For how long? Who knows.]

At first they just seem like a Heug McSwol awaiting their next trip to guinea pig it up at the steroid lab. A casual ‘arms like tree trunks’ that seems to always follow the Un-Greeter is your first hint and let’s you notice more oddities.

They are ABSOLUTELY a unit of measure at 7 foot even... as their... head ... is kinda flat looking even under the Walmart branded hoodie. Their eyes seem to track everyone even as they walk passed without a pleasantry properly shared.

You see the Un-Greeter is very polite and greets all as they conduct their mass around the store. Children always get a beautiful flower, the feminine tend to wear them, and the masculine (or ravenously vegan) tend to eat them which gets a chuckle. Adults can count on a pleasant nod, and quick help getting something off a top shelf.

The Politeness of the Un-Greeter can turn on a dime. Arms that grabbed both 50 lbs bags of dog food off the shelf for you to decide which goes back, and which goes in the cart, are like vices when the Un-Greeter is Invoked.

[Really how they prefer it. Well, Tomi ask one when you see one next]

Much like calling a Manager to Check-out 23, minus a need of the loudspeaker.

“Un-Greeter requested for Guest Ejection. Un-Greeter Invoked for Guest Ejection”

And they arrive behind the target, without any pomp or fanfare, and carry them bodily to the door. If they go quietly or are under a struggle threshold, they are placed at the door, and gestured to be on their way. The Un-Greeter has SEEMINGLY limitless patience. If they move on, all is fine.

If they pass the threshold or try to re-enter -but are still non-threatening to other guests- the Un-greeter nabs them again, turns to the Greeter,”Going... on break. Gotta plant an idiot tree.”

All assume that well they rough them up, and as no one hears from them again, it becomes a non-issue. Someone usually reports hearing a scream and running. Good Riddance.

[Well Alex they don’t get the data for the ejected, so you can’t find out anyone made it home safe, bruised, planted in a dark forest. No one knows]

Those who pass the threshold and are a threat to other Guests, are BOWLED into the parking lot. This bothers corporate. They used to be THROWN at their car. That had corporate besides themselves so bowling was the alternate, as TEMPORARY WARFARE was also not on the menu.

If a gun is fired, on the Un-Greeter’s watch, the speed of Target Acquisition and removal is something to behold, and then they are ejected bodily OVER the lot. Corporate turns a blind eye to this as anyone hurt gets up right as rain with no thoughts of lawsuits, their new Mountain Dew Green belt of vine not likely doing anything about the lawsuits, just the injuries. Not one looks for the Unruly Gun Person. Just doesn’t seem a priority.

“Guest. Please don’t make me Invoke the Un-Greeter.”

[Any questions? I’m sure you have many... NO THEY ARE NOT GROOT AND BANNER’S CHILD 9.9 Tomi really. I think I dropped enough Fey buzzwords]

[Uh... yeah Alex this would de-moron the areas around Walmarts which might call in Investigations. Any Fey, “SCP”, or Cryptid (Domesticated or Not) action could lead to Investigations. Half the fun is wondering whether they do such a good job they get hired for Gov’t work. Not everything ends up on the run or contained.]

I am so excited for monster Tae! This may sound dumb but I was a very nerdy kid with no friends and only cryptozoology books to accompany me, so monsters and cryptids scare the fuck out of me. It got uncontrollable, into the point that I literally got anxiety, sweating a lot, and nearly passing out when I have to check the under side of my bed or outside the window. All my friends and family laughed at me when I admitted what I was scared of. So I hid it deeply, but the truth is, I was still...

Aww bby I hope you managed to control your fear ❤ I was scared of Sadako for the longest time after watching Japaense horror movies when I was little lol and Tomie too. I was also a bit of a loner kid with a love for horror movies and books and it did screw with my brain sometimes (and it’s probably why I am who I am now). But as for monsters, I’ve always felt comforted by them. I’d like to think that they’re lonely too and just needed a companion. So if there’s a monster under my bed or in my closet, I’ll let them stay as long as they don’t cause a ruckus.

Have you heard about a story about a woman that lives between the gaps of your furniture? Screwed me up 😂😂 I went after tables and beds trying to reduce the gaps. The only monsters I’m scared of are the ones that are made to be malicious.
