not to be a hater on main but i just stumbled on a tik tok claiming that tsh both takes itself too seriously and could use more absurd comedy and it nearly made me punch a wall

#my quest to find agreeable creators on booktok and booktube leaves me v frustrated sometimes #!!! i accept no criticism of this book #but even without stan goggles on how can say with your entire chest that tsh takes itself too seriously #when it literally makes fun of 'dark academia' types TO YOUR FACE #which is ironic for the book that spawned the entire genre #it's a comedy of manners at the very least #'this book that contains copious amounts of absurdly comedic situations and makes fun of pretentious twits obsessed with aesthetics #could use more absurd comedy and is not satirical enough'#recognising those basic building blocks of the text does NOT even mean to have to like it??#i hate to be bringing the Reading Comprehension debate again but good lord. and this person claims to have a phd in literature too 🤦‍♀️#i am so over this pretense at criticism that basically boils down to 'i didn't like this thing so i can't be seen to admit it executes #anything well. so instead i'm going to pretend basic obvious techniques in the text don't exist and peddle it as groundbreaking critique'#stuff like recognising basic genre. what happened to that.#i don't like The Hangover either but it would be very strange to call it anything other than a comedy #the secret history #donna tartt #again you don't even have to like the book!!!#I'M SORRY BUT IT MADE ME WANT TO RANT SO BAD #livresque #booktok and booktube are satan's garden

so many of the newer successful dark academia books are founded on donna tartt’s dark academia aesthetics in the secret history, even when the entire point of the secret history is that aesthetics are pleasing yet entirely illusionary. the secret history manages to simultaneously brandish the aesthetics it criticizes which is its biggest feat – the novel literally opens with the protagonist admitting his fatal flaw is, you guessed it, aesthetic beauty. so it’s kind of funny and yet a little tragic how an entire subgenre has spawned out of a papenist (yes, I just made that word up) reading of the secret history that tauts aesthetic beauty when donna tartt was always warning us against our inner, yunno, papenism.

I know this hc maybe is losing its popularity, but I never see anyone do it well. By this I mean, people hc Alfred as being from New England specifically from Massachusetts and see him as some sort of Harvard intellectual.

And yeah but no when I say Alfred is from Massachusetts, his true nature deep down behind that American boy next door facade- he is a Masshole. And he may deny it to everyone else and put on a show that hides his true nature, but drop him back in Massachusetts- see how he acts in his natural habit.

Like I think deep down, he’s got this pissy New England attitude in him and he’s just really good at keeping it in. He swears like a sailor. He drinks a concerning amount of Dunkin’. He is weirdly proud of the most random things that he claims are only in New England but yk are everywhere else. His driving skills are questionable. He has no problem just wearing shorts and a tank top in a blizzard.

He may put on a general northern US accent for everyone else, but once he gets back home it’s “youse” and a lack of pronunciation of the word r (ex: car -> cah). He’s a big patriots fan too.

(I do hc him from New England just cause I do take a regional folk ways approach and I have US states and US cities to fulfill other needs/ cultural influences and discourses).

I miss all the dark academia kids from my 2010s tumblr era. I wondered what happened to all of us, if we kept pursuing the beautiful, deeply examined life, if we finally reached those heights of ecstasy we were always grasping for, if we truly did sacrifice what was dear to us in the pursuit of knowledge undying. There's a whole new generation of seekers now to take up the dark academia torch, and many of them are writing amazing books and taking stunning photographs and critiquing the subculture in ways it ought to be critiqued.

But I wonder about so many of those undergraduates who made up my class of kids, pouring their hearts out onto their blogs, posing proudly in their thrifted blazers and toasting with wine in their chipped teacups. They were friends to me when I felt alone in the world, and I wish we had kept in better touch. I can still faintly feel their echos in the code around here, like digital ghosts.

I remember telling you how I liked doing dishes, how I liked seeing them empty of food that once filled them. Not just filled but also what gave them their worth, I somehow resonated with them in ways only you could understand . Maybe even you didn’t understand what felt like to be empty now but once filled , filled with a kind of love that overflowed to other lifetimes. In my household it’s my job to do the dishes after dinner and I secretly enjoyed it, it gave me the solitude to think about what I’d talk to you that night , I used to have such elaborate conversations in my head but now all of them feel lifeless(maybe I resonate with them too).
