The battle lasted long. The two guardians of the Tower, who watched the sight they had conjured up from the memories of the black-robed mage lying within their grasp, were lost in confusion. They had, up to this point, seen everything through Raistlin's vision. But so close now were the two magic-users that the Tower's guardians saw the battle through the eyes of both opponents. Lightning crackled from fingertips, black-robed bodies twisted in pain, screams of agony and fury echoed amidst the crash of rock and timber. Magical walls of fire thawed walls of ice, hot winds blew with the force of hurricanes. Storms of flame swept the hallways, apparitions sprang from the Abyss at the behest of their masters, elementals shook the very foundations of the castle. The great dark fortress of Fistandantilus began to crack, stones tumbling from the battlements. And then, with a fearful shriek of rage and pain, one of the black-robed mages collapsed, blood flowing from his mouth. Which was which? Who had fallen? The guardians sought frantically to tell, but it was impossible. The other mage, nearly spent, rested a moment, then managed to drag himself across the floor. His trembling hand reached up to the top of the stone slab, groped about, then found and grasped the bloodstone pendant. With his last strength, the black-robed mage gripped the pendant and crawled back to kneel beside the still-living body of his victim. The mage on the floor could not speak, but his eyes, as they gazed into the eyes of his murderer, cast a curse of such hideous aspect that the two guardians of the Tower felt even the chill of their tormented existence grow warm by comparison. The black-robed mage holding the bloodstone hesitated. He was so close to his victim's mind that he could read the unspoken message of those eyes, and his soul shrank from what it saw. But then his lips tightened. Shaking his hooded head and giving a grim smile of triumph, he carefully and deliberately pressed the pendant down on the black-robed chest of his victim. The body on the floor writhed in tormented agony, a shrill scream bubbled from his blood-frothed lips. Then, suddenly, the screams ceased. The mage's skin wrinkled and cracked like dry parchment, his eyes stared sightlessly into the darkness. He slowly withered away. With a shuddering sigh, the other mage collapsed on top of the body of his victim, he himself weak, wounded, near death. But clutched in his hand was the bloodstone and flowing through his veins was new blood, giving him life that would- in time-fully restore him to health. In his mind was knowledge, memories of hundreds of years of power, spells, visions of wonders and terrors that spanned generations. But there, too, were memories of a twin brother, memories of a shattered body, of a prolonged, painful existence. As two lives mingled within him, as hundreds of strange, conflicting memories surged through him, the mage reeled at the impact. Crouching beside the corpse of his rival, the black robed mage who had been the victor stared at the bloodstone in his hand. Then he whispered in horror. "Who am I?"

Tasslehoff: Sturm! Sturm! I just overheard something interesting about Magius! Did you know, that's not his real name! I wonder why he changed it. Was his old name too menacing? Oh! Do you think it was something weird, like Fistandantadoodle? I didn't know we could borrow names...
Sturm: One should not be ashamed of one's name. It should be cherished, a gift passed down from one's parents and spoken with pride at every introduction.
Tasslehoff: You're right. It's probably just his "short name."
Sturm: That very well could be, Tas.
Tasslehoff: An elf war mage who's also half gnome... I wonder what his life quest is?
Sturm: Half gnome?

Caramon lifted his glazed eyes and met Tanis’, barely recognizing him through the bloody haze that dimmed his vision. He tried desperately to talk.
“Protect Raistlin, Tanis-“ Caramon choked on his own blood- “since I won’t “since I won’t be there now. Watch over him.”
“Watch over Raistlin?” Tanis repeated furiously. “He left you here, to die!” Tanis held Caramon in his arms. Caramon closed his eyes wearily. “No, you’re wrong, Tanis. I sent him away.…” The warrior’s head slumped forward.

325. Tracy Hickman - DL3: Dragons of Hope (1984)
Tumblr media
The third Dragonlance module is also a bit of a surprise if you are mainly familiar with the world through the novels. Although set during the events of Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the truth is that many of the events here are not adapted in that novel. In fact you would have to wait 23 years until 2007 for some of the events here to be adapted in novel form in Dragons of the Dwarven Depths.
Tumblr media
In this module you and your party of Dragonlance heroes are shepherding the refugees of Pax Tharkas which you liberated at the end of DL2 to a safe place where they can avoid the incoming dragon armies. You are also looking for weapons which might benefit you in the war and looking for the entrance to the Dwarven kingdom of Thorbardin.
Tumblr media
This leads you to Skullcap under which is the entrance to the lost Dwarven kingdom but also the lost tomb of Fistandantilus, legendary wizard of Krynn and a bit of a demilich by now. Another fun Dragonlance adventure, which is heavy on story and light on player freedom, so it might suit you and your player or not, depending on how much do you want your DnD game to be interactive fiction rather than a more loosey goosey affair.

Titbit Tuesday Thursday
@leucisticpuffin tagged me to share a snippet a few days ago. I have nothing Silm-related to share, but I'm slowly hacking away at the second chapter of The Right Lesson, so here's something:
He sits up, panting, and immediately starts coughing. For a minute that feels like an eternity, the world zeroes in on his chest as he tries to take a breath and comes up empty. One would think that he’s used to it by now—the panic, the grasping feeling of doom as he fails to get air into his lungs. But it never gets easier. Is this the time it finally kills me? For as long as he can remember, perhaps since the day Kitiara saved him from departing the world as soon as he entered it, Raistlin’s will to live has been stronger than anything else in his world. It drove him through an unloved childhood in a frail body. It kept him going, somehow, after his Test. It also led him to making a deal with Fistandantilus. My body for my life, Raistlin remembers thinking, but the lich took far more than just his health. He wasn’t just a voice in his head, a font of foreign memories, a key to the Tower. He was a vice, gripping his mind, its claws cutting into the very fabric of Raistlin’s self. So deeply entrenched that Raistlin didn’t even feel them until they were gone.

This scene hurt so much to watch. Tantai Jin is realizing that his whole life has been predetermined by the Devil God. He feels like no decision has been his and he has had no free will.
It reminded me a lot of this passage from "War of the Twins" by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman For those unfamiliar, the Black Robe wizard, Raistlin Majere has a plan to become a god, but he needs a Cleric of Paladine. a god of good, to help him enter the Abyss to kill Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness, so he can take her place. They travel in time, but they take the places of the previous people, who attempted to enter into the Abyss. Raistlin ends up feeling like he has been walking in the footsteps of Fistandantilus:
“Master of Past and Present!” Raistlin laughed hollowly—bitter, mocking laughter. “I am Master of nothing! All this power, and I am trapped! Trapped! Following in his footsteps, knowing that every second that passes has passed before! I see people I’ve never seen, yet I know them! I hear the echo of my own words before I speak them! This face!” His hands pressed against his cheeks. “This face! His face! Not mine! Not mine! Who am I? I am my own executioner!”
I also choose to hope like Crysania that together, Tantai Jin and Li Susu can change the ending like she says here:
“No,” she said softly, her gray eyes looking up at him, shining in the bright sunlight that filtered through the leaves, holding him with her steadfast gaze, “we will alter time, you and I! You are more powerful than Fistandantilus. I am stronger in my faith than Denubis! I heard the Kingpriest’s demands of the gods. I know his mistake! Paladine will answer my prayers as he has in the past. Together, we will change the ending … you and I.…”

Pairing: Raistlin Majere/Original Female Character (Yurielle), Caramon Majere/Tika Waylan Majere Fandom: Dragonlance Rating: Explicit (This fic is mostly Mature themed but I rate it Explicit due to its sexual content - more info in the story's notes) Chapters: 74/? Takes place beginning around, and replacing, the Legends Trilogy
Summary: ~⚔~ On the surface, Caramon Majere has gotten on with his life. He is now a husband, a father, and the proprietor of the Inn of the Last Home in Solace. However, try as he might, he cannot escape the void left behind by his twin. Six years after the war, as the rest of Krynn goes on, the former Hero of the Lance struggles with hidden vices while maintaining the facade his friends and family expect of him… Conversely, Raistlin Majere has freed himself of the Archlich Fistandantilus. But in that void left behind, he faces a new challenge: that of self-identity. Now in Palanthas, the Archmage struggles to remember who he was before his Test as he adjusts to this new life with his Star beside him… Their lives may go on, but memories and lost friendships burn like dying embers in the hearts and minds of these two men. The past is painful and bitter, yet the ashes of their lost kinship may hold the key for the twins to reclaim what they each seek for themselves.

"I am pleased to see you.” “And I am pleased to see you, Revered Daughter,” he said in that mocking voice that grated on her nerves. “But my name is not Raistlin.” She stared at him, flushing even more now in her embarrassment. “Forgive me,” she said, looking intently at his face, “but you reminded me strongly of someone I know— once knew.” “Perhaps this will clear up the mystery,” he said softly. “My name, to those around here, is Fistandantilus.” Crysania shivered involuntarily, the lights in the room seemed to darken. “No,” she said, shaking her head slowly, “that cannot be! You came back ... to learn from him!” “I came back to become him,” Raistlin replied. “But... I’ve heard stories. He’s evil, foul—” She drew away from Raistlin, her gaze fixed on him in horror. “The evil is no more,” Raistlin replied. “He is dead.” “You?” The word was a whisper. “He would have killed me, Crysania,” Raistlin said simply, “as he has murdered countless others. It was my life or his.” “We have exchanged one evil for another,” Crysania answered in a sad, hopeless voice. She turned away. I am losing her! Raistlin realized instantly.

"-¿Todavía no lo has entendido? No he estado nunca aquí, más ya he atravesado estas salas. La alcoba que ocupo me ha cobijado innumerables veces, pese a que nunca he pasado una velada completa en el alcázar y, en definitiva, soy un extraño que recuerda la localización de todas las estancias, desde las que se utilizan para el estudio en el nivel superior hasta los salones de banquetes de la primera planta.
-En este caso, Fistandantilus, sabrás que éste ha de ser tu mausoleo."

“Well?” Fistandantilus’ clawed handed spasmed ravenously, groping for the bloodstone pendant around his neck. “Your choice?”
“I might go into that nothingness,’ Raistlin spat, “But then so will you. Go to the Abyss, I will have nothing to do with you.” Chapter 1: Test.
Raistlin makes a decision.
