If you don't mind, can I ask something from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo? What do you think are Sukeroku and Kikuhiko’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic?

Sorry if you've answered these questions before (it's just not many people that I know that love this ship, yes I found a few who loves the anime but like, they don't want to see the subtext romance of those two and think of them 'just bff')......

If you want to answer the questions above with Howl and Sophie's dynamics, too (even not as detailed as above) I don't mind (this is one of my oldest ship, and one of the few m/f ship that I love until now)....

Sorry for my long ask....

I only know one other person who has watched SGRS and it's my best friend because I forced him (thankfully he loved it). So I've never gotten to talk to anybody about it before but him, and he's not much of a shipper, so no one has asked me these questions.

Sukeroku's greatest strength I would say is his friendly and talkative nature. You can see it shine through in his rakugo performances so I feel like those traits help him in his craft in a way. His biggest weakness however is running away from his problems when things get tough. Kiku's strength is his perseverance, ironically enough the opposite of Sukeroku. He wasn't suited for rakugo at all due to his docile, awkward, and serious personality but he admired the art so much that those things about himself didn't stop him from pursuing the thing he loved, and eventually becoming good at it and even revered for it. His weakness I would say is allowing regret to consume him. He spends decades of his life trapped in the past so much so that it makes him a shell of his former self after [redacted]'s death, and it hurts the rest of the relationships he has in his life. What I love about Kiku and Sukeroku's dynamic is that Kiku was judged and gossiped about by the people in his town since he was small, and Sukeroku was one of the first people to accept him for who he is and befriend him. Kiku used to be annoyed by him, but ended up caring for him as they grew and studied rakugo together (I love the pinky promise scene when they were still kids ugh). Even as adults, they remain close, and though Kiku is annoyed with some of his behaviors and the fact that Sukeroku is technically better than him at rakugo, it doesn't affect their relationship much (until the bitch who will not be named comes into the picture). I respect others' shipping decisions, but idk how anyone can watch this show and just see them as best friends. Like, they act so much like a married couple with the flirting and the doting on one another. They're pretty physical with each other too, or at least Sukeroku initiates that, and the ear-cleaning scene when Sukeroku lays his head on Kiku's lap bro? When that's a known thing and sign of affection between couples in Japan? Plus the episode where Kiku sees him again after awhile and they take care of Konatsu together? They are literally a couple and they're her fathers, no one can convince me otherwise. They did a rakugo performance just for her pretending to be a couple. HELLO.

(Fun fact, I've actually written an essay in college for a Queer Films class about the gay subtext of Sukeroku and Kikuhiko's relationship, and I got an A, so you've come to the right guy to talk about them with lol)

For Howl and Sophie, my favorite thing about their dynamic is that despite wanting to run away from all their problems, they push each other to solve them and want to help and protect each other. Their relationship is almost like they need each other, and they choose each other. They give each other things, whether it's acts of service or actual items, and they're always thinking about the other. They make me sick in the best way uuuuggghhh. They are also one of my oldest and favorite m/f ships ever, HMC is peak romance to me, idc.

Fandoms: In terms of posted fics, mainly Rogue One and Star Wars (OT). I have at least one fic posted in A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones, Community, and Howl’s Moving Castle (book). But I also like The Clone Wars and Rebels. I’ve been reading mainly ATLA fic for the past couple weeks.

Where you post: AO3 and sometimes here on tumblr. There are a few drabbles I’ve posted on tumblr that I really ought to crosspost on AO3 for posterity.

Most popular one-shot: “In Which Sophie is Late, and Howl Noses Around in Her Business” (Howl’s Moving Castle) With 698 kudos. Uh. Wow. I was not expecting that! It’s literally my only HMC fic (although I do technically have other unfinished drafts) and it’s not even a year old, and surpassed my second most popular one-shot which was posted in 2015. Pregnancy trope is popular I guess. It is amusing to me that my most popular one-shot is not in my favorite OTP fandom (rebelcaptain). Howl’s Moving Castle ended up having a wider audience than I anticipated.

Also as a disclaimer, but popularity is weird to gauge because do you go by hits or kudos or comments? I went with kudos because hits could count people who clicked on my story and then didn’t like it. But it’s hard because hits also include re-reads, so, idk.

Most popular multi-chapter fic: “The Last Stark” (A Song of Ice and Fire) 815 kudos. This was finished in 2013 so it’s had plenty of time to accumulate the kudos. It’s a Gendrya Anastasia AU (“Aryastasia” was my working title for this one lol). So again, popular trope, in a popular fandom, in a popular ship. This fic is so old when I reread it, I usually find myself wanting to edit it, especially the ending. I was so ready to be done writing this that I think I rushed the ending. Oh well, writing plots is really difficult!

Fic you were nervous to post: Every fic? lol. I’m never not nervous to post a fic. But I’m definitely more nervous posting in a fandom for the first time. So posting “Whatever I Do (I Do It To Protect You)” (Rogue One, rebelcaptain) was pretty nervewracking, especially since it’d been awhile since I posted anything. [OOOH, fun fact, but WID celebrated it’s 4 year anniversary yesterday! Ha, that’s funny.] I was working on this fic for weeks before I posted it.

I was also super nervous to post my Jeff/Annie Community soulmate AU, “Intro to Neurochemical Compatibility” because (a) first time posting in that fandom, (b) I decided to use script format which I know is not everyone’s jam, and (c) the premise is just so ridiculous! But I had fun with it.

Also gift exchanges are always nerve-wracking because I worry the giftee won’t like it. My giftee never responded to my 2020 rebelcaptain secret santa fic so I’m actually constantly worrying that they didn’t like it and feeling bad that I failed them. :/

How you choose your titles: with so much agonizing. gosh it’s so hard and honestly i have so many titles that i hate. I’ve got a couple song lyric titles. a couple quotes. a couple “how to...” apparently that was a whole phase I went through. Either the titles come to me immediately, or I put off choosing a title until the absolutely moment I need to post it, and then spend hours agonizing over a quote/song lyric/phrase that fits and probably begging others for help.

Do you outline: YES. Possibly overly so. I’ve ran into issues in the past, when I was much younger, where I didn’t resolve problems proposed early in the story. So I need to know where the story is going in order to lay the proper groundwork. Also, if I do not write things down I forget them five minutes later. I also think outlining is a useful trick to jumpstart writing, so if the muse just isn’t present, I’ll try to lure her out by outlining.

Complete: 19 fics.

In progress: Oh boy this is so hard to count. As far as what’s posted? Technically only one: “How to Lose a Spy in 10 Days” (Rogue One, rebelcaptain). Despite the fact that I think the deadline was extended multiple time, I procrastinated and ended up rushing chapter one to meet the rebelcaptain rom-com challenge deadline. Didn’t really have a proper outline for this one, even though I knew vaguely what I wanted it to be about. I wrote chapter two but I hated what I wrote so I ... I kinda abandoned it. I mean technically, I never consider a work abandoned, I always intend to get back to it. Some day when I have the inspiration I will. But this idea ended up being a challenge I didn’t feel ready for at the time, and then my interest moved on to other ideas.

I also had a longer story planned for “you must become an island (the horizon is all we have)” but only posted one part of it to finish it on time. Ideally this fic would be part of a series, but again, motivation is needed so we’ll see

Technically I have 22 rebelcaptain ideas alone (including some listed in this post) at various states of completed, plus a handful of Community and HMC ideas. Of the ones I’m most interested in, there’s probably about 14 that I really hope to finish and post some day.

ETA: omg i totally forgot that i was idly considering trying to finish my rebelcaptain soulmate AU in time for Valentine’s Day, but at this point I haven’t had any motivation to write so I don’t think that’s gonna happen. that fic has been sitting in my drafts since 2018 and in my drafts it will continue to sit.

Do you accept prompts: Wellllll here’s the thing. When I’ve asked for prompts, I haven’t been the best at fulfilling them in a timely manner. For that reason, I don’t encourage prompts but I’m not opposed to them. (I suppose technically exchange fics are prompts, and I wrote a bunch of fics in 2017 for rebelcaptainprompts, but I’m not gonna count those because I don’t think that’s what the question here is really going for)

“The Climb (A Lie, A Hero)” (Rogue One, rebelcaptain) was actually a prompt.

I solicited prompts for my birthday in 2019, which I didn’t end up fulfilling until exactly one year later.

Technically the You’ve Got Mail AU is a prompt, someone prompted me to write a fic for my favorite go-to comfort movie.

And, uh, the certain someone who tagged me for this meme prompted me in a comment back in October 2017 to do a Luke and Leia swap where Leia grows up on Tatooine, so that is sitting in my WIP list.

Yeah, this is why I don’t solicit or encourage prompts. The return rate is just not fair for the prompter.

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: this fluctuates on any given day. the fencing AU is so close to being done (well the first draft anyways) so i really really want to just finish it! But yeah it’d be anything on the coming soon list above.

since the first step in achieving your goals is to state them aloud, here's a list of aftg fics/ au s that i'd like to write some day

- pre-canon fic from aaron's perspective spanning the twins' first meeting till they're drafted by the foxes and graduate high school. i'm increasingly enamored with aaron as a character as well as with an outside perspective of andrew's actions and i think it would be very interesting to look at the foundation on which their fraught relationship is built and first developed

- even more pre-canon fic. andrew's early life in foster care. yes, we all know about the most... gruesome things that were done to him, but i believe that there is plenty more that has affected and shaped him, especially in relation to my interpretation of andrew as an autistic poc. this would not be a happy fic.

- anastasia au. neil as anya, andrew as dimitri. possibly a plot amalgamation from both the animated movie and the stage show, with changes as i see fit. (no, neil is not the prince of russia). what i find most compelling about this au is the story of neil and andrew as childhood friends and then the angst of having andrew, as an adult, teaching an amnesiac neil how to act like a noble while being convinced that neil is an imposter. good shit

- art school/dance club au. the foxes attend the palmetto school of art at prestigious edgar allen university. they're considered the school's charity cases, and they are NOT friends. andrew is a studio arts major with a concentration in sculpture who works in the campus coffee shop in the mornings and frequents night clubs that employ pretty boys in the evenings. neil is attending college completely on his father's dime, PROVIDED he study what his father wants, despite his desire to study dance and music. going crazy without an outlet, neil takes a secret job as a go-go dancer. look. this may slightly possibly be a result of me having planned to party hardy this summer, then having my plans ruined by the virus :c

- 1950s High School au. the 1950s aesthetics fucking rock even though the 1950s fucking sucked. kinda wanna tackle both. plus, andrew already has that james dean bad boy fast car appeal

- an exploration of mary and nathan's relationship and history. i get that neil's parents are both super taboo and both really really awful people, but i have questions and i want to answer them

- neil never returns from baltimore. in order to keep his deals, permanently, andrew kills riko and tetsugi, and gets over 20 years in prison. when he gets out, he just wants to be alone, but it seems there's a ghost haunting him. this was conceived for MAXIMUM angst, no getting around it. i got the idea from a badacts fic and it has haunted me ever since

- post-canon sexuality exploration fic. i have a real passion for quality sex education and healthy experimentation, and neil very clearly didn't get the chance for either. yet at the end of the books he finds himself in a very intense sexual relationship. i just really want to give him the opportunity to find out how desire works for him and what he likes, on his own terms. i read a lot of fics where neil's desires seem to be completely dependent on andrew's initiaton, and while i do believe that andrew is the only person neil is attracted to and will ever be attracted to, i also want to explore how his sexuality manifests on its own. the vibe i'm going for is, uh, HornySweet (tm), but also with a lot of genuine eductional material. i want this is to be something that offers real information to its readers that may have been inaccessible for a lot of people, on topics like like sexual hygiene, maturbation, and sex toys in a non-fetishy way. this will be very very E rated, but like,, in a very earnest and goofy way because sex and sexuality is neat and cool but it's also not all serious perfect fucking. it's just,, a topic that deserves to be DISCUSSED

- mobster au. andrew, having never met aaron, takes a job for the moriyamas to track down a runaway asset. Neil. upon completion, they make andrew the butcher's apprentice, and pull neil back into the fold as a commodity rather than a person. lots of violence, lots of shady underground dealings, lots of plotting, lots of secrets.

i'm gonna put some more under the cut, ones that i don't feel as strong a drive towards right now or that i haven't thought as much about. if you (yes, YOU) like any of these, or are interested in any of these, or wanna hear more about any of these, or are even inspired to write something yourself by any of these please, PLEASE, say something in the notes, or send me a message, or an ask or anything. - princess bride au. come ON. princess bride is one of the most romantic AND most snarky movies of all time, and andreil literally invented love and devotion sooooooo it's a perfect match. "yes or no" vs "as you wish" kings of consent and communication and unconventional love declarations. also,, he may not be how I imagine andrew, but a young cary elwes in dramatic black pirate getup is DEFINITELY a valid andrew

- hozier au. sometimes,, i listen to an album, and imagine a fic that encompases the whole thing. nothing speaks louder to me than hozier's discography. (also, yes, i am gay). maybe a little bit inside llewyn davis. neil wanders through a small town and takes up some small jobs, but sings his heart out through twisted metaphors once a week in a hole in the wall bar staffed by a very short, dead eyed veteran

- prince and the pauper au. on a stealth recon mission in enemy territory, andrew encounters a local lord who happens to have his face. in a moment of desperation to save himself from arrest, andrew knocks the lord out and assumes his identity. he returns to the castle just in time for prince moriyama to arrive with a shifty-eyed, red-headed handservant in tow. lord aaron of columbia, meanwhile, wakes up on a ship manned by crown traitor and fugitive kevin day, calling him by a name he's never heard before, and then he's in the hands of the guerilla rebel forces that have been attacking the kingdom. i watched barbie princess and the pauper as a child and that movie fucking slaps

- little mermaid/beauty and the beast/bride of the rose beast/ladyhawke au. in a last ditch attempt to escape his father, neil trades his voice and his tail for legs and washes ashore on a small kingdom with horrible secrets. because he cannot speak, read or write, prince aaron employs neil to serve the monster in the catacombs, the prince's twin brother. the twins are under a curse that turns them into terrifying monsters, andrew by day and aaron by night. aaron's affliction is a secret, as is andrew's humanity. this is such a hodgepodge idea lol. did neil also have to be a mermaid for this to work? no. is he? hell yeah

- new york private school/twin swap au. aaron wins a scholarship to a prestigious school that will guarantee him a future, but then he relapses. convinced he just needs a little more time to get clean, he makes a deal with his volatile new brother, andrew, to stand in for him at the school just until he can his shit together. neil and ichirou moriyama have been raised together their entire lives, always under the knowledge that ichirou will inherit the family empire with nathaniel as his right hand. they hate the idea, but they have no way to escape, and now neil is being harassed by ichirou's bitchass estranged brother at their stupid, fancy private school. LISTEN, we as a fandom do NOT take enough advantage of the twin swap possibilities presented to us. pathetic

- post-canon fic where ichirou, realizing that the life of a mob boss is a lonely one, decides that he needs... a friend. however, because of the nature of his work, he can't just make friends with anyone, so he decides to make friends with neil. without consulting neil first. cue a lot of very weird, very awkward coffee dates where neil is convinced he's about to be disposed of, and ichirou just wants to know about his cats. the thing i like about ichirou is he’s a complete blank slate. i can make him a good guy, a bad guy, an ally, the Big Bad

- Kill Bill au. mary survives a bullet to the head and wakes up from a coma over a year later. with nothing left to lose, she sets out to single-handedly dismantle the wesninski circle. good thing she used to be its top assassin

- single dad andrew au. except look, look, stay with me here, okay, aaron is his son, and he's adopted nicky and kevin. LISTEN. STAY WITH ME. JUST THINK ABOUT IT. tbh the idea comes from my interpretation of the andrew/neil/kevin dynamic as distincly parental, then extending that interpretation to andrew's protection over the rest of his family.

- fashion au. andrew is a fashion designer and photographer who frequently works with allison reynolds. one day she brings around a short, twitchy assistant who looks like she just plucked him out of an alley. somehow, he becomes andrew's muse. i watch a lot of fashion competition shows

- ghibli. either howl's moving castle (andrew as sophie, neil as howl) or spirited away (?). maybe both idk

2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: I like the idea of burgers, but cannot bring myself to eat more than maybe a couple of bites. Something about the texture of the meat makes me want to gag. It might be because I threw up after eating a McDonalds burger in my youth, but I can’t be certain. I also cannot make myself eat ground beef as a result. Ground turkey is fine! I can eat that no problem. But ground beef is like my kryptonite.

3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON: Eyes, for sure. Especially blue eyes. Um... I guess smiles, too? And idk for the last one.

4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF: Dumplings, specifically the recipe my little sister uses. She makes the best dumplings.

5. A FOOD YOU HATE: Ground beef, as seen above. As a kid I convinced myself I hated peanut butter, too, but I actually don’t mind it. I also really can’t stand gravy. Too many incidents as a child of mistaking gravy for ranch when all I wanted was ranch sauce.

6. GUILTY PLEASURE: Eating buttered popcorn dipped in nutella with a nice sprinkling of salt on the popcorn. It’s so bad for me but it tastes so good.

7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN: Usually a tee shirt and pajama pants.

I was the awkward quiet girl and was more of a crybaby than I care to admit. If I’d learned sooner to just not react to people trying to get a reaction from me, I’d have had a much easier time of things. But then I don’t think I would be as close to my little sister as I am, and we’ve always been really close, so... I dunno.

10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: With the right people, absolutely. You have to be someone I’m really close to, like a really good friend, a close family member, or say... my boyfriend.

11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: There’s a lot, honestly. If I had to pick just one, though, it would be Howl’s Moving Castle.

12. FAVORITE BOOK: The Count of Monte Cristo, oh my goodness. When I was assigned it in my senior year of high school for summer reading, I thought I was going to hate it simply based on the length. We had to read the unabridged version. Once I really got into it, it sunk its claws into me deep and did not let go. The twists, the turns, the characters... it’s all so good. No adaptation is ever going to hold a candle to it for me, and honestly that does make me sad to a degree.

18. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, ever since I saw Lilo & Stitch. I’d love to go back to Britain again someday in the near future (current events in our world providing the chance to), um... I feel like there’s other places I’ve wanted to travel to. But I’m not thinking of them.

20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY: Yeah... I think I kind of do. If you come into the room when I’m really invested in something I’m doing and I don’t hear you, and you speak out of nowhere, I will jump. I once saw a guy doing some gardening outside a window of an apartment I was at while I was doing something, thought it was some guy trying to break in, and legitimately made this noise. I can still hear it in my head. But I did calm down when I realized it was just a gardener.

21. IPHONE OR ANDROID: iPhone

22. DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES: I have ever since I was really little, all thanks to my big brother. As a really young child, my favorite games were Yoshi’s Story, Diddy Kong Racing, Spyro, and Pokemon. Pokemon still has its claws in me to this day, as does Animal Crossing which I didn’t get into until I was a little older. I tend to stick to cutesy looking games, but now and then you’ll find a total oddball in my gaming library like No More Heroes or Layers of Fear.

23. DREAM JOB: It used to be literally anything at Disney World, but... I’ve since realized that’s a dream probably way too far out of my reach. So these days, I don’t really have one.

24. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS: I’d for sure use some of it to make it so my boyfriend and I can be together reasonably. Maybe find a nice house for us to stay in. Nothing too big but nothing too small. Maybe get a corgi? Otherwise... I’d probably follow Greg’s example and use the money to help people closest to me rather than spending super large quantities on myself.

25. FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU HATE: Okay, so... I have a very irrational hatred for the Pokemon Entei. And I say it’s irrational because it developed when I was a child because it was the literal one thing keeping me from catching Ho-Oh in Crystal. I’m pretty sure it took me a stupid long time to finally be able to catch it, and when I did catch it I stuck it in a box and never looked back.

26. FANDOM THAT YOU WERE ONCE A PART OF BUT AREN’T ANY LONGER: Technically 101 Dalmatians. That fandom is... cursed. I only say technically because I do enjoy 101 Dalmatian Street. I just don’t participate in the fandom that much.

10. Silent Devotion

Rose would be happy to see the ocean if the templar guarding her would stand a little farther away. She feels exposed and, frankly, unsafe with him standing so close to her. It’s just drawing attention to her situation, and the other passengers and even the crew of the ship keep giving her funny looks.

9. Satinalia Morning

The adults are all struggling to stay awake. Branson has given up entirely, his head back and mouth open as gentle snores escape him with each breath, little Matthew sprawled across his chest to sleep too.

Rose finds Cullen in his office, leaning over his desk in a position that’s achingly familiar. Today, though, he isn’t staring at troop movements or requisitions, and he isn’t wearing his armor. His crimson cloak is still around his shoulders, some of the fur trim sticking in his stubble, and he looks up when the door clicks closed behind her.

7. Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed

He wasn’t prepared for the surge of anxiety that comes with sitting on a boat with three other templars, all in full armor, and setting across a lake so deep he can’t see the bottom. The boatman, yet another man to make the boat too heavy, guides them across to the Circle tower that dominates the skyline.

6. Three Days, Three Nights

“Any fun plans for the holiday weekend?”

Asha looks up when she hears Bull’s voice booming in from the hallway, but she can just see his dress shirt straining across his broad back. He’s talking to Cullen, then, and she turns her attention back to her computer screen. The cursor blinks in the blank word document, a silent judgment on the amount of work she’s done so far this morning.

5. The Life and Times of Sophie Amell

Ever since the forest burned, Sophie’s life has never been the same. She didn’t know what she was doing. The trees were large, scary, the howling of wolves too much for her little body to cope. She saw a pair of yellow eyes in the darkness and all she knew to do was throw her hands up to protect herself.

4. “Flat White for Colin?”

Asha barely glances at the cup before she calls for its owner. “Flat white for Colin?” She double checks that the paper lid is in place and then sets the cup down, name-out, on the counter so he can grab it.

He doesn’t.

3. Rising Tide

Redcliffe Castle is quieter than Alistair remembers, all silent halls and nobles who don’t want to fend for themselves after the servants have all fled. Everyone else is asleep, long since retired to their rooms, but Alistair can’t bring himself to fall asleep just yet.

The bed is too soft. That’s probably the problem. It’s the nicest bed he’s been given in… well, ever if he’s being honest with himself, which he tries not to be. It’s too soft, and he’s too anxious avoiding the darkspawn dreams, and he can’t get the memory of Sophie’s hand sliding up his thigh out of his mind.

2. Souls Made of Dreams

The pain is… unexpected. Dreams don’t usually hurt, at least not physically. She can count on one hand the number of times she’s been scared enough in a dream to be propelled into wakefulness with a pounding heart, but this feels different.

Maybe because she doesn’t know where she is, or because the moment she sat up a man ran from the room, leaving her alone and freezing. She doesn’t even have a blanket on the bed–no, the cot?–and there’s a big fireplace but it’s empty.

She shivers, but the door opens before she can do more than swing her legs over to rest her feet on the floor.

1. Absolutely Smitten

The problem, she thinks, is that the Inquisition keeps them so busy that their paths rarely cross. This is to be expected, but the understanding makes it no less frustrating when every meeting feels like their first.

In that first meeting, in the Hinterlands, so soon after Moa became the Herald, Harding was nothing but professional while Moa stumbled over her words and blushed and generally acted like a fool until Cassandra lost patience and dragged her away.

So... patterns? I always start in the middle of something. I almost always start with the main character. I assume you guys know some of what’s going on and dive right in. Idk. I’m not good at patterns.
