Gold-Silk: Origins
Chapter 1- What a Day
An explosion sets off, alarms blare, white-hot pain shoots through his body, glass shards litter the floor. It’s gone, it’s all gone, dozens of test subjects, experiments, all gone… All but one. One skittering out of the lab and into the bag of an unsuspecting intern, all eight legs and body hidden within its contents.
Never does the spider leave the bag, not when the intern gets home and not until the very next day.
—————
Amber opens her locker and deposits her bag, as she had grabbed it for lunch, grabbing the books she needs for the second half of the day. As always, looking forward to when school’s out and she gets to go home. The bell rings; making sure her yellow hoodie covers her crop top, and fixing up her short curly brown hair, Amber heads for class, hoping to pass by her friends in the hallway, though she knows they have class on the opposite side of the building this period.
She reaches for the door and the building shakes, 30 feet from her the wall caves in as something big crashes through it, light catching on metal for a fraction of a second, and continues its path. Amber loses her footing, the action of breathing getting harder as dust and debris pile up next to her. And her vision goes black.
—————
Amber stands up with difficulty, blood running down a small scratch on her face. The school hallway she was in, made to pieces by some.. what even was that?? A guy? A robot? What just happened!?
She looks around holding the back of her neck, staring at the giant holes that were now on each side of the hallway.
A golden spider scuttles on the floor in front of her.
Amber hears a loud knocking coming from behind her, and when she looks back one of her best friends, Gwanda, pops out of one of the lockers. Amber and Gwanda had been best friends since middle school when they both happened to be going through a spider phase, ironic huh?
“Is it gone?”- asks Gwanda, peeking out of the locker she was in, half her body still in it, wearing that pink sweater with hearts scattered over it that she loves so much.
“Think so”- replies Amber, not entirely sure and not bothering to ask why, how, or when Gwanda got into that locker. Well, she couldn’t hear any more walls breaking so that was a good sign. She thinks. Suddenly she remembers they’re still missing another member of their group.
“Where’s Pete..?”
—————
“Pete!!!”
“Pietro!!”
Amber and Gwanda have been searching for ten whole minutes, ten!! Ok, maybe ten isn’t a lot of minutes but don’t act like you wouldn’t be worried. Yelling his name at the top of their lungs and helping everyone they come across who needs it, they start wondering if they should look for him on the other side of the school or maybe he’s already outside waiting for them to join him until their guardians show up. But before they turn around, they hear a voice coming from a closed classroom a couple of doors ahead of them.
“Amber! In here!” -his voice wobbles, craking at the last syllable, like he’s been crying. Their concern grows as seeing that the destruction implies the… thing passing through here. The girls rush towards the door, stopping at the entrance. Amber felt her stomach drop, how could she have forgotten?
“Tío Enrique!” - she cries out, dashing to his side. She kneels down beside him, not sure what to do or even say when tears start falling down her cheeks. -“What happened?”- She asks, voice quiet, electing not to say another word feeling she wouldn’t be able to finish the sentence without sobbing.
Sniffling, Pietro, the last member of their trio, replies - “I-.. I don’t know, I ran in here to hide after the wall in the hallway collapsed. I only saw, I only saw him there after I had closed the door.”- His hands were shaking, Amber noticed, dust and grime covering them and the front of his graphic t-shirt, possibly from trying to lift the collapsed piece of ceiling.
She remembers now how excited she had been that first day of high school. Yeah, it was a new place and new people, but she was going to have her uncle with her. He was going to help guide her in her high school years, see her graduate, and be one of the people who help her get there. And now here, with most of his body still crushed under part of the fallen roof, Amber takes hold of his hand and watches as her plan crumbles just like the ceiling did. She stares at his closed eyes… Did he die on impact? Hit his head? Was it blood loss? In the ten minutes it took them to get to his classroom? The room is silent, fluorescent lights flickering slightly over their heads.
A golden spider crawls into the classroom, unnoticed, and climbs up Amber’s sleeve.
The seconds pass, all three friends quiet, frozen in the face of what had happened when Amber feels a small prick on the back of her neck, grimacing, her hand immediately shoots up to hold the spot.
“Argh! What the hell?” - She exclaims, sucking air through her teeth.
Surprised at the sudden break in silence, Gwanda turns her head towards her - ”What? What’s wrong”-
Scratching her neck, then looking and her hand, Amber sighs, “Don’t know, probably nothing, sorry.”
Silence falls over the room again, Gwanda laying her hand on her friend’s thigh for support. They don’t notice how much time passes before the cops and the paramedics lead them out of the school.
—————
Just like the classroom, the apartment is silent. Silent as Amber’s dad opens the door and closes it behind her. Silent as she makes her way to her room, not bothering to turn the light on. Silent as she collapses on her unmade bed, drained from the day.
Days pass as she lies there. She feels sick, not only from her uncle’s death but something else too. She’s feverish and nauseous and her inner writs itch like nothing ever before.- “It’ll pass” - she thinks and goes back to sleep, maybe that way she won't have to think of the fallen ceiling in that small classroom for a bit. Days pass and she hasn’t talked to her friends, a small amount of guilt taking over her when she thinks about how worried they must be. But it passes on quickly as another wave of nausea takes over her. The funeral comes and goes, she’s back in bed the second they get home.
Almost a week has passed by when Amber wakes up feeling better than she’s felt in a while. She gets up and stretches, heading for the bathroom for a quick shower, something she hasn't felt like doing in a bit. She lets the warm water and soap wash out the sweat from being in bed so long and shampoos her hair, not knowing when she’ll be up to doing it again and not willing to take any changes. She exits the shower, puts on a fresh pair of pajamas, and heads back to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Wiping the condensation off the mirror, she catches her reflection, and her eyes widen, dropping her toothbrush into the sink. See, last time she checked the muscles in her arms were not that big. And she was most definitely slightly shorter before. Confused and somewhat panicked, Amber spits out the remaining toothpaste and tries to turn on the faucet. But the newly acquired muscles seemed to be real and not figments of her imagination because when she turns the tap, the thing come off its spot on the sink, and water shoots everywhere. Swearing, she covers the tap with a towel to slow the flow of the water. Significantly more panicked, she grabs the door handle to leave the bathroom and find her phone. The door, of course, had other plans and comes off its hinges, the door knob crushed in her hand. She thanks everything ever that her dad was off at work while she stayed home since the school still needed some repairs.
Amber rushes to her nightstand grabbing her phone and unlocking it, not necessarily thinking through what she planned to say once the others answered.
The phone makes a sound indicating of someone picking up - “Amber? Dude, it’s almost been a whole w-” Gwanda starts but doesn't get to finish.
“Dude I’m ripped!” - Amber interrupts, like that’s a normal way to start a phone call.
“What?” - Pietro, just joining the call, questions.
Noticing her friends are lacking any and all context, Amber elaborates - “I just, I don’t know I woke up today, felt way better than yesterday, took a shower, and when I saw myself in the mirror? Buff arms, man. It’s crazy, I broke the sink and the door too-”
“The door??” - Asks Pete, extending the ‘o’ sound to emphasize his very valid question.
“Yes, the door, I don’t, I don’t know what to do guys. Can you come over? I'm sort of freaking out” - Saying this, Amber takes her phone off her ear, putting it on speaker with the intention of leaving it back on her nightstand, but when she goes to put it down it doesn’t want to leave her hand.
“Oh my god. Oh my god. What the fuck! What the fuck!” - She exclaims flailing her arm all over the place.
“What? What’s wrong now?!” - Demands Gwanda, not knowing what to do from the other side of the phone.
Still wildly waving her arm around, Amber replies, sounding increasingly panicked - “My phone- my phone is stuck to my hand, like, it won’t come off! Come over please, please, please!”
“On my way.”
“Be there in ten.”
