I'm fairly certain we'll see more versatile tricks from Surge in future. I do think it would have been best if she weren't a speedster, but maybe the logic is coming up with a way for her to even hit Sonic with how fast he is. Weird as it sounds, she kind of does remind me of movie Sonic who is pointed out to be somewhat unskilled but strong.
It's true that Surge isn't done yet, and we don't know how long she's going to stick around. Admittedly I lost faith in the writers to follow up what they've set up, but yeah, I may have jumped the gun with my post.
I wish the story put more emphasis on the fact that Surge only used her powers in controlled environments, while Sonic actually fought in real situations, to justify how weak she comes across and how she has the potential to grow stronger. The majority of Surge's dialogue in IS is "wahhhh let me fight i'm bored of tests D:", it would have been nice to prove that she was right to whine. Instead we're supposed to think that she and Sonic are on equal foot, because god forbid we put an OC in a bad light, am I right? Instead she’s not even mad that she lost to him in #51.
The fact that the next arc might see her stealing Wisps to get stronger doesn't help matters. Really? You need Wisps to be threatening? Like... they don't sound like a big source of power. The Cyan Wisp makes you nyoom, but she can do that already. I hope the covers are lying and she only has the Wisps in her hand to bully Whisper lmao.
I do think it would have been best if she weren't a speedster
How so? Being a Sonic clone is, to steal IDW Sonic's favorite word :P her whole schtick. How else could she be?
Weird as it sounds, she kind of does remind me of movie Sonic who is pointed out to be somewhat unskilled but strong.
I made the comparison too. Movie Sonic's speed comes from electricity, and his arc sees him going from a naive, scared kid, to a confident hero. He doesn't really know how to fight in SM1 and he discovered the Spin Dash by accident lol.
It makes sense for Movie Sonic, because he's meant to be a younger version of Sonic. Surge is meant to become Sonic's replacement in-universe, so I'd expect Starline to do a better job. When you think about it, he made some seriously sloppy mistakes, like this and:
not coming up with an excuse for Surge to hate Sonic and for Kit to be loyal to Surge. You can manipulate memories, come up with a tragic backstory! Say that Sonic killed Surge and Kit's parents and Surge raised Kit since he was a kid! Something! No wonder they have an existential crisis every week!
making Surge a rebellious arrogant showoff punk and then expecting her to obey Starline and listen to Kit, only because "Sonic has attitude :)". Dude. C'mon.
not coming up with better excuses after hypnotizing them - you really telling me that Surge would accept that she's so fragile that an argument overheats her?
This is the guy who thinks he can be better than Eggman, by the way. When Metal Sonic had his teenager moment in Heroes, Eggman immediately reprogrammed him to be loyal, and it stuck. Just sayin'.
(and this is not even getting into the absolute mess that is his Operation: Remaster plan. It makes literally no sense. My brain hurts everytime I try to understand how Surge and Kit are supposed to be his tools to "reshape the world" by "controlling the hero-vs-villain narrative". What the hell does that even mean???)

Any IS4 tips, tricks, advice, secrets, and/or absolute game-breaking combos?
It came out just 12 hours ago so I'm not exactly sure yet about what I'm doing, but here's some basic info from CN players to get you started
IS4 is far more flexible than IS3 because you're no longer dealing with Broodmothers and floating bastards, but do note that higher difficulties still do trend towards specific strategies. In IS4's case, that's blocking and tanking.
In that same vein, Medics and Defenders see a dramatic increase in value in IS4. Nian and Hoshiguma, often ignored in IS1, 2, and 3, are popular picks in 4 because of 4's high damage, high speed enemies that need to be blocked. In one month though, Jessica the Liberated becomes the strongest Defender for IS4, due to her range, tankiness, damage output, and shield summon providing a second tank and block source.
The dominant class of IS3, Snipers, take a big hit in IS4. Without those floating fuckers whose name I forget, you're not reliant on Kroos the Keen Glint's stuns just to survive anymore, and Snipers without high DPH need a lot of relics to keep up with IS4's enemies. Typhon is the most popular Sniper pick, but in 4 or so months for Global, Ray will compete heavily with Typhon due to her extremely high DPH.
Casters are finally viable again outside of Passenger/Goldenglow juiced up on relics. However, Passenger / Goldenglow with the right relics are still the strongest in the class I think. Special shoutout to Qanipalaat for being a hard counter to the 2nd boss even at difficulty 15.
Yes, you can still pick Texas the Omertosa and then black out and wake up at the final floor. She's still incredibly busted. Same with Kirin X Yato, though the latter isn't quite as flexible as Texas.
Since IS4 rewards tanking, medics are also extremely valuable. Among them, Reed the Flameshadow is the best and even an extremely popular starting 6 star in IS4, but Eyjaberry is also still Eyjafjalla so even if there's little elemental damage she's still among the strongest anyway. Because Eyjafjalla.

Do you think that sometimes Terrans get leftover quirks and instincts from their ancient animal ancestors? Like for example, Nearl getting hit with a bad case of Horse Anxiety, Gavial having to resist the urge to do the death roll when she bites into a juicy piece of meet, or Gravel digging an intricate tunnel system in the garden for enrichment, etc
It sometimes happens. Honeyberry likes to jump onto people from high places, Ceobe behaves half like a loving rescue house dog that used to be a feral stray, half like a feral dog (including eating mushrooms to get high, which is actual canine behavior and is what gave us IS1), Nearl dances like a horse, Indra seems to have a propensity for hugs, which is line with tigers being especially physically affectionate for felines, and this might be more of a personal thing that a species thing, but Olivia Silence is in fact nocturnal, like an owl.
I’d say it informs some aspects of certain individuals’ behavior, but it’s ultimately more in line with nods to the animal for audience fun rather than an important narrative-world building characteristic.

A lot of privileged white (or non black) series creators are in LOVE with the idea of an evil, "reverse racist" oppressed minority member who personally victimizes & unfairly "victimizes" the poor oppressor class and even sets their babies on fire because that's how bigoted and "reverse racist" he is.
Yes, I'm talking about the way Striker is written. This horse has probably been beaten to death but I still cannot believe that the first (and only) chatacter to be called a 'bigot' and a 'supremacist' has been Striker, an imp, a canonical member of a species that is1 apparently treated like slaves. Vivzie really really wanna hammer down that "both sides are bad and mean to each other! Reverse racism exists guys!" point, huh.
The biggest red flag to look out for in series created by privileged people that feature oppression, is if the most violent 'racist' antagonist of the show, is a member of the oppressed class - or if they address the "reverse racism" of the evil minority who hates the oppressors (they are evil because they hate even the good innocent ones!!11) before they actually address or even mention the actual oppression that lead to the hatred of the oppressed to begin with.
Anyway, that's my rant. I know this horse has probably been beaten to death but this is literally one of the biggest criticisms I have of the show. The "evil minority who is reverse racist and sets innocent pregnant women on fire just because they are part of the oppressor class even tho they good" troupe is way too overused even though we are 2023 and what is worse, is that it's written off as progressive because often it's so sneaky and manipulative & a lot of white folk see it and eat it up.
Also Fizz telling Blitzo "are you sure you don't hate him just because he's a goetia? >: (" yeah I do lmao suck my cock you ugly ahh clown
It's a horse that's always worth beating just a little bit more. The stuff with Striker is infuriating and smacks of Vivzie's lack of empathy for anyone less privileged than herself.

IS1: Cautus girl feigns being injured to trap you in a bandit ambush, using your kindness against you
IS2: imprisoned Sarkaz lady asks for your blood to give her the strength to escape, then abandons you to deal with a cohort of guards
IS3: Sarkaz Church of the Deep cultists invite the player into an incredibly obvious trap, but it's chill if you just wanna leave them to have their dance party
IS4: Sarkaz witch invites you into her cabin, gives you food and drink then leaves to collect ingredients for a meal. You can either wait politely and enjoy her feast, or you can... kill her dogs and burn her house down.
I don't know what our story will be in IS5, but IS6 will have us on the run from Interpol.

do you have any tips for enjoying integrated strategies? coming from someone who loves roguelite games, i just cant seem to actually enjoy playing IS. it feels way harder to recover from bad rng in IS than it does in other roguelite games.
Believe me, I wasn’t a fan of IS when it first came out either. In fact, I missed out on most of IS1.
For me personally, I think the main thing that drove me to try and enjoy IS is the fact that I like playing AK. So a separate game mode that doesn’t require sanity but still offers useful rewards and even teaches you how to be a better strategist sounded cool. It took me a while to reach that point, though.
Borrowing operators I don’t have to play test them is fun. Getting specific relics and then building your squad around them is fun. Learning how to use your operators in ways you haven’t before is fun and enlightening. Learning how to turn bad RNG into something you can work with is fun.
The RNG in IS3 feels worse than IS2 because of the added Random Afflictions, Light mechanic, and dice rolls. Because of that, I don’t intend on going any higher than Surging Waves 7. I’m not a particularly skillful player, but I’ve gotten to a level where IS doesn’t bother me as much as it did before.
I also think, with enough patience and tries, even bad RNG stops being “bad”. Playing IS also has to do with memory, and if you tackle a map enough times, you’ll figure out how to clear it even with a suboptimal setup. That’s part of the fun. Failing is never just failing, but a learning experience. You know what to do next time.
Integrated Strategies is literally Make Do With The Cards You’re Dealt. Open your mind to playing the game differently than what you’re used to. Use RNG as a way to adapt and adjust.
Of course, this may not apply to you, and that’s ok. Don’t try to force yourself to enjoy it if you can’t. There’s nothing wrong with doing IS just to get the rewards and then stopping.
Good luck!

This is probably going to be a little sacrilegious but something that I'm finding is that when I play IS3, I am actually enjoying myself a lot. Honestly, I'm enjoying myself a lot more than I was playing IS2. This isn't to say that IS3 is perfect or anything, or even than IS2 is bad, but I find that I'm enjoying my time in IS3 just a lot more.
Now keep in mind I'm not really a hard mode grinder by any means. I didn't enjoy the difficulty mechanics in IS1 very much, and their return in IS2 really did not inspire me with much desire to tackle IS2 on a harder difficulty. IS3's difficulty is a bit...infamous for being a bit much, and honestly I'm kind of content with just poking my toes into the water in the future if I feel I want to. If you asked me to do A15 Izumik or die, I think i'd take the gun personally.
The point here is that I'm taking both of these themes from their base standpoint, and that means on the surface level that IS3 is just going to be easier. Two of IS3's unique squads (Mind Over Matter and People-Oriented) not only feel stronger than any squad in IS2, but they're dramatically more interesting to play. You also start off with significantly higher buffs in IS3 over IS2. You have stronger statistical buffs, you have more resources, you have the frankly crazy perfect clear about 8 Max HP buff, and the new node types, all of which are good.
I don't really want to come in from the difficulty angle, although it is maybe unavoidable that more runs in IS3 for me feel like they actually finish compared to IS2. This is partly due to difficulty and partly do to factors that extend into the design of stages themselves.
I will summarize my thoughts here and maybe make a point later on to elaborate them in a different post
-IS3 gives you more opportunities to develop runs, mostly through the use of keys -Keys fuck, and honestly I will probably enjoy IS4 even more given it uses keys in a much cooler way. Having more control over a run feels really nice -Map design in IS3 is a LOT better than in IS2. A lot of IS2's map design is based on IS1, which I'm going to be brave and say is by and large total shit, and IS2 relies a LOT on what are basically pranks -Seriously, fuck the Lost Colossus stage in IS2. -This makes it so its a lot easier to get a sense of flow in IS3. You can look at a stage in IS3, and know how to reasonable tackle it. This isn't consistently true in IS2. Shit in IS2 just fucking, moves. -Also the fact that IS2 kept the absolutely awful Bear and Duck stages where you just contend with increasing numbers of bullshit, and decided to make one version with fucking Sandbeasts makes me really ticked off. These stages are so much better in IS3 -Corrosion is a significantly better mechanic than Sanity. I am not a Sanity defender and I think it says something that I consider Scarlet Singers so dangerous you have to always account for them -Granted Sea Skimmers also suck dick, Low-Altitude Hovering my beloathed -Paranoia Illusion is a much fairer boss than Lucian, Blood Diamond. I feel like if IS2 had an A15 people would legit hate this boss. You're generally priced into trying to kill him on the first pass or develop enough life to deal with leaks from the defender side. It's never worth actually developing that side if he breaks the roadblocks. -I also like Ishar'mla more than Troupe Mouthpiece. Mouthpiece's stage has a really baller design, but it is maybe the ending out of the 8 in the first two IS that requires the most specific set of units. -Also unlocking Ishar'mla is generally a bit easier than Mouthpiece and doesn't require you giving up a boss relic and THEN hitting a random event
But like, IS3 isn't perfect. It has its bad stages and frankly really annoying bullshit (Territorial Tendencies and Ubi bona somnia are quite bad as Emergency Operations). The Light mechanic is annoyingly useless and not even really fun to interact with. Izumik is uh
well frankly I kind of stopping wanting to do it that entire thing is beans
and the Resourceful Squad exists to remind me that I am not Fate's Favorite Child, I will roll nat 1s on my D12s
