Gintama introduced me to a new concept I couldn't have understood in any other form than the long art form, much like Bungo Stray Dogs. It'll probably become a favorite for this. I'm nowhere near finishing Gintama so maybe this will change, maybe so much I'll learn it wasn't ever a true theme to begin with but just something I misunderstood in the first 100 episodes. I like it either way.

There's this whole theme about people, especially men, who either have to, or feel they have to, keep their emotions and genuine motivations hidden to protect other people. How sometimes we all do that, probably. And sometimes we're wrong. But sometimes you can't break a lifetime of socialization built around being The Protector and sometimes just brute forcing your way through a wall doesn't get you to the other side, it just gets you stuck somewhere in the in between. Uncomfortable for you, pressed tightly between the bricks, and uncomfortable for the other, who can't interact with you the way they'd like when you're crammed in some way you're not supposed to be.

I guess the takeaway is that not everything is meant to be said and not every wall is meant to broken. There may be work worth doing regarding openness and trust, but that work is less of a Sunday afternoon single-episode kind of thing and more of a Shonen-anime-that-goes-on-for-literal-decades-with-hundreds-of-episodes-as-you-grow-from-child-to-adult kind of thing.

(Also yes I did write this because of the episode about Kondo and Hijikata and Sougo and Sougo’s sister Mitsuba, don't @me, I'm not cry you are😭)

More characters who are of importance to Katsura! Continues from here. 10. Kondo! Their relationships saw a slow progression from utter enmity to a more measured view of each other, then turning into each other's honourable enemy, mutual respect growing between the two of them.

11. Hasegawa - They didn't have epic moments between them, perhaps, but they do spend enough time together that I want to include him here. He has his own nickname for Zura, that's great!

12. Kyubei - Zura's one-sided meta rivalry with Kyubei is ridiculous, but it's still a kind of connection...

hi so im not as deep into it as you so these'll be just some fun ideas i've thrown around in my brain while thinking about these characters ok cool :)

given post canon domestic type feels i 100% believe kondo has to teach toshi how to cook. if you look at canon materials and official art all that man knows is mayonniase and if anyone is gonna give him a wean off its gonna be kondo. there was that joke where kondo became a malewife (for reasons that were stupid as shit) so he can do it. i believe in them

i circled canon did them dirty on the chart bc while a lot of pairings with ship bait are uh... Bad. some of them are just like cmon. given that the shinsengumi members suffer heavily from gintama syndrome (dumbass jokes being placed above actual characterization) konhiji suffers from this tenfold. all that to say i could've fixed it and they could've had a very interesting dynamic in universe together if canon actually wanted to study that

i think we're in agreement on this one but kondo is 100% the loverboy in this relationship. carrying them the same way he has to carry the shinsengumi,,, sighs

konhiji works best to me when you consider the deep connection they have w each other and help apply that to a post canon scenario imo. what i mean by that is kondo has done so much for toshi throughout their time knowing each other, growing with each other, that by the time they've reached their committed relationship stage toshi is able to subtlely repay him in ways to show how much they mean to each other. that sort of dynamic is already kind of integral to the gintama formula so i think it works really well. i dunno

there's a few i have rattling around in my brain, hopefully you get something out of these :)
