Virtual Sketchbook #1
Writing and Research
Hi, my name is Nina Jimenez. I don’t have a lot of interesting facts about me, but my little known fact is that I am a huge fan of the Disney character Stitch. I also have three cats who are named Mylo, Tyger, and Charles.
Vik Muniz 2008 Woman Ironing , from the series “Pictures of Garbage” AP1 of 3+3AP, digital C-Print, 143 x 101,6 cm /56.3 x 40 in.
Vik Muniz is a Brazilian artist who uses unusual materials to create his drawings. Such as garbage and perishable items.
The original piece of Women Ironing was an oil painting made by Pablo Picasso in 1904.
Vik Muniz has a documentary called “Waste Land” that takes place in Brazil’s largest landfill. He picks six of the people working there to pose as people in famous paintings. Along with helping to change their lives.
The woman in the painting is Isis Rodrigues Garros. She was one of the women who worked in a landfill that Muniz collaborated with to make his painting series, “Pictures of Garbage”
Vik Muniz gets his inspiration for his paintings from Rambrandt and Johannes Vermeer. They are both Dutch painters from the 1600’s.
When I first looked at the painting, I noticed the different textures combined with the colors. The background is definitely what stood out the most, almost like a pretty mess. After researching the painting, I found that the colors were all different textures because they were pieces of garbage and not paint. I was shocked that Vik Muniz used materials like garbage to make his art. Using recycled material to create art is a very well appreciated technique in todays society. Along with the fact that the woman in the painting was someone from a landfill that Muniz worked with. The garbage he used to make the background with was also the garbage used in the landfill that the woman worked in. Knowing the story behind this painting does open my eyes to a different perspective. This painting is the representation of the life this woman is living. I also found out that this painting is a mimic of Picasso’s painting, which is the original Women Ironing. Comparing the two photos together I noticed that the woman in Picasso’s looks sad and exhausted. While the woman in Muniz’s looks more resilient. After noticing that I see that Muniz wanted to also represent the woman’s strength and force that she had. Even though the conditions she is living in aren't the best.
Art and Writing
This is a drawing of the Disney character, Stitch. It is a drawing made by my cousin that she gave me a few years ago as a birthday present.
The media she used to make this drawing were pencils, crayons, and markers. What makes this beautiful to me is that it was made by one of my family members. As well as the fact that she drew something that I have an interest in. If you've watched the movie Lilo & Stitch, you'll know that Ohana is the Hawaiian term for family. Family is the most important thing to me, so this drawing means a lot.
It's not hung up anywhere in my room, but I plan on framing it with other art pieces I have so that I can look at it from time to time.

Age: 17
Gender: Female
From: Florida
Ethnicity: Mexican-American
Some of the things I like to do for fun are watching movies or shows. I also play some games. I've played games like ACNH, The Last of Us, Batman Arkham Knight, Spider-Man, etc. I also like to just chill with my cat whenever I want to relax.
I am part of a youth organization called YIA (Youth in Action). I am also currently unemployed.
I don't exactly know what makes me unique. A lot of the things I love and do other people do as well. Most people would describe me as weird. But weird as in they haven't met someone like me before. So, what I believe makes me unique is my overall personality, and who I am as a person. As well as the experiences I've been through.

ADNOC I Forwards National Day from Gonzalo Oliveró on Vimeo.
Finally, I can present this Director's Cut filmed at the end of 2022 in United Arab Emirates for the National´s Day. The kind of projects that one loves to do as a director, those types of stories that allow you to meet new people, tell their stories and discover new corners of the world.
A beautiful project that allowed us to depict a country from a different, closer, and honest perspective. A country I have loved and respected for a long time, and one that has given me so much.
My love letter to the UAE is a portrait about the people, that shows us a place where many individuals from different cultures coexist and work together to continue making this unique place in the world a reality.
Thanks to the Joy Films family for trusting me and my team to bring this project to life.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed filming it.
