CHAPTER NINE FINALE

When: June 20, 2022. Where: South Beach.

The buzzing is louder than ever on its tenth day. As if it knows something is coming. Perhaps it does.

Seamus and Esther call for a group gathering on the beach to address the issue as noontime grows near and the noise reaches a nearly ear-splitting level. The sky is cloudless and conversation is difficult over the din.

“It appears that this won’t be stopping any time soon,” Esther begins, raising her voice somewhat to be heard. “Given the circumstances, we’ve begun planning for –”

She doesn’t get the chance to finish that sentence. It’s as if she’s summoned this, as if the sky bursts on itself, a ripple that starts somewhere in the middle of the horizon then extends outward. Like thin fingers that reach across the sky, the lightning stretches overhead at stunning speed, sparks showering down. The buzzing is louder than ever. Some move to shield each other in spite of the memories that it makes you see. Others run.

And then, between one breath and the next, the sky is clear. The air is abruptly, overwhelmingly quiet. Quiet enough for you to hear Seamus’ trembling voice as he asks: “You?”

His gaze is on Esther as they pull away from one another, having collided during the second shock. And shock is what replaces his usual gruffness, widening his eyes, slackening his mouth. “All this time – after everything – it was you?”

Esther stands, frozen, her usually measured expression pinching with dread. “What did you see –” She begins, but Seamus quickly responds.

“You know good and well what I saw. You?!” There is a new bellow to his voice, outrage replacing the numb astonishment now. “After all that he did for us? After all that he did for you? He fuckin’ loved you, and you –”

Before Seamus can get too far into his blustering, Libby steps forward, balancing Flora on her hip. “Seamus, man,” she prompts. “What are you saying?”

“Esther killed Matthew.” There is a heavy finality to his words. The beach is hushed. The buzzing in the air is gone as Seamus turns to his fellow leader. His friend. “He trusted you. I trusted you –”

“I can explain,” Esther begins in a trembling voice. “It was the fog, Seamus, I hardly knew where I was or who I was or who he was –”

“Enough! I don’t want to hear it! You killed him, Esther, and then you lied to us! All of us! To hell with it – to hell with you. Akbar –” He whirls around suddenly with a definitive point at Emre. “You’re out of the Fisher’s Hut. Back to the mainland. You –” Now he’s pointing at Esther. “Get the fuck out of my sight. And you two –” Now it’s the Hardys. “Come with me.” 

After more than a year, the truth has emerged: Esther Achebe killed Matthew Alphonsus. What’s more, for better or worse, and without a vote from the people, island leadership has changed hands. A new trio has formed, consisting of Seamus Hayes, Tomas Hardy, and Libby Blum. Esther has not been put to trial. Will she be? Will her hasty sentencing stand? And how will this new leadership fare?

These are the questions that hang in the air on this hot, dry afternoon. Otherwise, it is mercifully silent.

This concludes Chapter Nine: The Shock! While much of the physical island has stayed the same this time around, it seems like dynamics will be changing in the wake of the onslaught of new information revealed during this chapter. I’m intrigued by the potential longterm impacts of this event!

The legend of Sappho is infamous. Many think that she was lost to time, where as other legends believed that she had taken the heart of an Unnamed Goddess. It is entirely up to you to decide! But for those fortunate enough, they are pulled to a mysterious island that is completely off any map. An island created for Lesbians, a safe haven that in reality was created by the Unnamed Goddess to honor the human that she had loved so deeply, wanting people to share in a slice of what she had.

❥ Today, Lady Love Tours runs with this myth and hosts many vacation packs for Lesbian women to ‘find’ this supposed haven. This holiday maker has become famous for its romantic, sight seeing tours and inclusive group holidays. Though it would seem the 2022 tour group is about to find much more than it bargained for as the Unnamed Goddess of Sappho’s island has decided to divert them to paradise... Just what will they find? Will they want to stay? Legend has it that The Goddess will Gift them with something if they stay.

But there has been a twist:

❥ Dark forces had been threatening the island and while the Goddess protected her creation, Sappho’s island ended right next to New York City. While there is a barrier protecting Sappho’s from the modern world, the islanders and the newcomers can come and go from the island and the city very easily. SKELETON CHARACTER: THE BEACH GOER

OVERVIEW -

On the outside looking in, this person might seem like they’ve got life all figured out. They cracked the code. Broke through the Matrix. Nothing can bother them—not their parents, not their boss, not those snot-nosed kids stomping on everyone’s sand castles either. Okay, well maybe their parents and boss can’t bother them because they cut them out of their life. But they’d be lying if they said that unaffected attitude ever came naturally to them until recently. The truth is, it’s taken them a long time to get here. A very long time. A lifetime of misfortunes—things most people likely wouldn’t have been able to survive or come out kicking on the other side. Sometimes they still wonder how the hell they’re still alive, given their past. But a strong pursuit of happiness through rehab, therapy and setting boundaries has unlocked this new era of life to them, and even though they have no job and are living in their car, they’ve never felt freer. Soon, something’s gonna change. They can feel it. In the meantime, they’ve stopped waiting around and wallowing in their own misery, and have learned to take life day by day. To quit all that looking back, and start living. Really living. Even if all they have is the shirt on their back and a gifted hot dog for the day, that’s alright with them. Call them a hippie, but they don’t even care if you do. They have no will to prove their worthiness to anyone anymore, and instead have taken up the role of trying to get people to see the light. To live, because all we have is today! Don’t you see?

CONNECTIONS -

THE HOT DOG MAN: Showing up to the beach every day has it’s perks. This one comes in the form of friendship and a free hot dog. A signature, daily, personal coupon to one large weenie with extra, extra relish, free of charge. The Hot Dog Man has this currency system. A hot dog for your thoughts, he calls it. Well, the Beach Goer has a lot of thoughts, and even if they’re so much more healed than they were a few years ago, they still feel bad taking charity. This is a good compromise, to stave off the guilt of being given something for free, and as a result, they’ve unintentionally shared a lot about their life with this person. They never planned on it. Sure as hell didn’t intend to do it. But there’s something about the Hot Dog Man that makes them want to be vulnerable, and in a good way. They might even call him their best friend. That position’s been needing to be filled for awhile anyway.

THE LIFEGUARD: Cowabunga, dudes! Surf’s up! The best things in life are free and it seems like the Beach Goer is the only one who can get the Lifeguard to look up from their phone for more than five minutes. They aren’t privy to this though, and maybe if they were they’d have noticed by now the way the Lifeguard blushes in their presence. Instead, they go over to bug the Lifeguard for a surf board every day. Normally you’d have to pay to rent one, but there’s no harm in sneaking one over to the Beach Goer, right? They don’t even know the effect they have on the Lifeguard, or why it’s so monumental that they’ve gotten them to eat a sandwich with them and talk for an hour at a time. This is just normal time-passing behavior to the Beach Goer, but it’s a sonnet of love to the Lifeguard.

THE EMT: Maybe one day the Beach Goer will become a paramedic. The more they talk to the EMT, the more they feel drawn to the calling to help others, and the stories of diabetic emergencies and heat stroke are interesting enough that they get the Beach Goer to shut up about Alan Watts for five seconds. Even though the EMT is younger than them, they look up to them. In a lot of ways, they even feel a little jealousy for the EMT, because they got their life together way sooner than the Beach Goer ever did. Talks about using narcan to save someone’s life makes the Beach Goer get a little quiet every time, though, and unbeknownst to them, the EMT has caught onto this. Neither is willing to prod the other for their vulnerability, so they enjoy each other’s company, and read between the lines.

THE FERRIS WHEEL OPERATOR: The Ferris Wheel Operator really needs to get that stick out of their ass. Or, at least just loosen up a little. Have some fun! The Beach Goer tries to be the Operator’s voice of irrationality, encouraging them to live their life before it’s too late. They have different ideas of what life is supposed to be like. After all, the Operator has a family and they don’t. In a lot of ways, they think they might have been like the Operator in another life. Had they made all the right decisions and settled down. The Beach Goer has somehow become their resident weekend babysitter, and not always, but often finds themselves spending the entire weekend running around with the kids and going on rides. They feel for the Operator, and take it from them, they know what poverty is like... but they just wish the Operator could see that they could be perfectly happy living on one job, and not wasting their whole weekend mindlessly pressing buttons.

THE CHEF: Leftovers? Count them in! There’s one thing for sure, witnessing the Chef post-shift every day is a nice, blatant reminder why they never liked working. The left over pasta the Chef sneaks to all the employees after Garguilo’s closes is worth its weight in gold to the Beach Goer. It makes for a very satisfying dinner, plus the smell of Italian food on the Chef is kind of nostalgic. The Beach Goer lets the Chef rant to them about their shift every night, and gives them life advice straight from the file cabinet of live free, die free. Take down the establishment, dude. Fuck capitalism. Is there anymore garlic bread?

CHAPTER NINE: THE SHOCK

WHEN: Midday, June 10. WHERE: The South Beach.

The morning of June 10, 2022, is warm and calm. As calm as any morning on Meridium is, anyway. People wake early to get to their respective jobs, or simply bask in the sun, or head out on a journey. Whatever their cause may be, plenty of people are out in the sun when the noise begins.

To some of you, this unnerving sound is unfortunately familiar. It preceded, for some of you, an unwilling journey into the jungle on the North Beach. The buzzing of unknown origin that fills the air is relentless and only grows louder as the morning progresses into midday. It sends some of you fleeing to your shelters, others cowering by the water, and some headed directly toward the jungle. Toward the seeming threat. But those of you who look in that direction are facing the wrong way.

The afternoon sunlight is suddenly replaced by a blindingly bright light. A resounding clap of sound fills the air, and by the time your ears have stopped ringing, the existing buzzing has doubled in volume. As you look around at each other, you realize that many of you have hair standing on end. Almost like the air is charged.

Because it is. This begins to show itself when you begin to check on each other, reaching out and assuring yourselves that everyone is okay. Except that when you touch, it’s suddenly as if you aren’t on Meridium. You’re launched into the memory of whomever you’re touching at the time. 

There is no choice in the matter – as soon as you touch, it’s like you’re whisked away, ushered into a memory that you have no hand in choosing. Though the strange sensation only lasts for a split second in reality, you are plunged into the entirety of a memory, however long it takes in this strange blip in time. You see things entirely from that person’s point of view, as they happened in the moment. And as little choice as you have in what you see, they have the same. You may be privy to things that you didn’t realize you didn’t know.

The island seems to have made a declaration: this is no place for secrets. If you are touched, you may risk information you’ve painstakingly kept to yourself finally being exposed. Or perhaps this will come as a relief. Whatever the case: you have no choice. And no idea what sort of consequences this will reap.

Rest assured: the islanders will never be the same.

To the muns…

A strange effect has rippled throughout Meridium. No matter where your character was when the lightning struck, this charge in the air will impact them. No matter who they touch, whether they are close or not, they will be privy to that person’s memories, and vice versa. And as previously stated: your character has no control over what memories or shown. (But of course, you do, writers! Let the angst begin.)

As of now, this chapter will last for three weeks, ending on July 1, 2022.
